as Warren G, The Chronic, Doggystyle and all the East Coast shit we got into (well not everyone but dudes I knew), but Federal was low key popular, and In a Major Way was VERY popular.
The funk is real slow on those tracks and it's akin to Houston Screw shit, you just gotta have an ear for it.

In a Major Way, Federal, and Loyalty & Betrayal are all real nice full listens, but the rest of the albums I've heard from him are very shaky. I like him enough he's one of the few artists I did a chronological review series for, though. Certainly one of the most important west coast artists.

I like guys who come on a track and you can tell it's them instantly. He has that quality. He wasn't afraid to sound ridiculous and often wound up sounding much cooler for it. He did too many sorta throwaway tracks for my liking though. I definitely appreciate his contribution and bump some of his shit tho.

in terms of 40 vs dre, whatever tension there was was on some neighborhood shit (hillside/crest), not personal, at least to hear 40 tell it
by the way the unedited J-Diggs interview on the Mac Dre arrest (special feature from the "Ghostride the Whip" DVD) is spectacularly interesting, informative and entertaining

Still, to my ears his sound seemed so regional that I found it hard to believe the whole bay could be fucking with him. Even though the whole Northwest up to Seattle is always idolizing the dude. like he never had no out of region hit like E-40 did (although that was much later than Federal)
$hort immediately got love in the Bay because he was the first to really represent it widely though, right? Not so much because he was loved as a rapper per se.

like just the fact that he had raps was a novelty, original raps. this was what 1981? 82?
the way he describes it at that time people were rapping other peoples raps like the message and shit
and then he came with his own raps, had a catchy name and look and appeal, started marketing specifically to the drug turfs up and down east oakland, and it was kinda a wrap
plus he had the dirty stuff which was a real new novelty
and he would do special request tapes about specific neighborhoods or groups
everything he did was about oakland, about the people he was rapping to
iono $hort was pioneering so much shit that its hard to say if he was 'respected as a rapper' or if that even mattered. the whole thing was new and exciting. he just had the magic time, place, approach formula.
in terms of the diggs interview i know theres one on youtube which isn't the one i'm talking abt, but might cover some of the same territory. in the one from the dvd he details the whole series of events surrounding the arrest and trial including yeah dre's loyalty which was remarkable. he was locked up for 6 years, had a viable rap career waiting for him the minute he tipped outta there, knowing that the feds knew he had nothing to do with the robberies, and were literally just holding him for leverage against others, and still didn't say a word. Diggs explains it that if Dre had talked he would have received life (which to my ears implies that he's killed people, but who knows)
i think mac mall probably did a lot to break vallejo cats to the larger bay too, illegal business was a hit

I like the vast majority of the tracks on Block Brochure Pts. 1-3, and Pt. 4-6 were pretty good as well. The issue with the double album with Too Short had more to do with Too Short than E-40, and regardless the "Mob Music" album of the two was solid. I didn't love the first two parts of "Sharp On All Four Corners," but there's still some dope shit on there.

so i got exposed to his music early on.. it wasn't really my thing at the time, but my friends bumped it with pride and i eventually got on board.
i'll say this though.. in areas that fuck w/40 heavy, he remains current. Dude is pushing 50 and gets regular play on commercial hip hop and r&b radio regularly. He collaborates with artists from all regions and eras. Teens (in CA and I'm guessing other places) know his latest jams by heart.
