And that "free" stuff you asking for usually don't come in "luxury" properties.
They be trying to tax your pockets
But the embassy suites and holiday inn have those items for free

Those would be a few brand names when I think of best or luxury hotel

The W and The Standard only make the list because they are modern and trendy

I like The W because of the modem interiors
All the other properties tend to be decorated in Louis IV furnishings
For old white ppl

They all have stellar service tho

And everything is a la carte
All food and internet is pay for play

New Orleans also has the Monteleone which is a great hotel too
But more for your 60th bday
Not 40th

Stay at The W!

They all have free wifi in the lobby
But in room wifi costs

That room will be about $1000 for a 3 day weekend
What's an extra $50 for wifi?

If you ask, I'm sure they will chomp it for you since it is your bday.
They have given me suites just because I asked

If she was too present this to a travel agent she would get the same answers we gave

They'd look at her funny and tell her to hit priceline

maybe she should have said I wasn't the best girl I can get that lets free wi-fi and free breakfast
Then I would have said Best Western, Clarion, Red Roof Inn, Ramada, etc

I am here to help...

They upgraded me to a WoW suite
Free parking
$30 food voucher (which paid for most of breakfast)
Just because I asked and told them I remember staying in the older crappy W the time before

Free Hotel breakfast are nasty
Better off spending $10 at some diner near by

I would say she should priceline the marriott or hyatt for $100 per night
Add $10 breakfast
Add $15 wifi
And she got a $125 room with every thing she wants

But since parking is $32 per day she won't like that I'm sure

Babe, do you have a budget in mind?
That will help us guide you with your definition of best.

the main reason to go to N.O. is for the food...you'll hate yourself for eating a snack pack of Capn' Crunch just to save 15 bucks.

put in free breakfast and wifi (i did this for Hawaii) and then get the list of places and go to trip advisor and yelp and see which one has the best ratings.

last time i stayed it was at the Hilton Garden Inn on Gravier but now that I think about it, breakfast was "free" because my friend had a certain status with the hilton gold points or something...and i assume wifi was free because we didn't pay extra for it.

i'm assuming these suggestions are in/near the french quarter
NO is a nice city and relatively small and easy to get around
i'd probably airbnb it in mid city or bywater
the good restaurants and music venues the locals go to are all in the residential areas and you can always catch the trolley to the french quarter when u want

Do yourself a favor...

Stay outside of New orleans and drive in...

you could even stay as far as Baton Rouge and drive into the Dirty Lean every day its about 45 minutes to an hour drive...

you will probably save quite a bit...

You didnt mention a budget so...

There is the Roosevelt...

find a hotel you like
and join that hotel's or hotel group's loyalty program
I did that with Kimpton, didn't cost me anything and I get the free in-room wifi along with decent discounts
OR
if you're really committed to a particular hotel
call the hotel directly and inquire on packages/manager's specials
esp since you're coming from out of town.

here for dis.

but if you don't wanna spend Ritz $ but want Ritz accommodations, the Iberville Suites share the bldg with The Ritz, but the entrance is on Iberville St instead of Canal (tho you can still walk into the main Ritz entrance on Canal) And at least when i stayed there a few years ago, you got use of the Ritz facilities (pool, spa, etc.)

Plus the rooms are still nice and most if not all have separate bed room and living room

everything's pretty much been said. except, get the cheapest room and say its your 40th birthday and they'll upgrade you for free. all these 5 star type hotels do this. birthdays, anniversaries, honeymoons etc = free upgrade.

if they have an open room they can upgrade you to.

they aren't going to guarantee it over the phone or promise it to you over the phone in advance.

if the day OF, you're checking in and they have rooms available so it's not costing them anything extra, you chat them up and you're friendly... they'll upgrade you.

somebody ask for the **best** hotel IN new orleans the type of repsonses they get:

1. stay in BATON ROUGE it's just like being in the French Quarter!

2. i stayed at the homewood suites in Slidell and it was nice.

3. why don't u just air b'n'b? i got a nice spot in biloxi.

4. the ritz/monteleone is your best bet

i don't know about yall but when i turn 40 i want to say "GOT DAYUM!!!!" not just when i walk into my suite but when i walk into the hotel LOBBY
ritz/monteleone is some basic shit you see everywhere
every W i've been to has made me say "OH!"

i want to be able to come in at 430am still be hype as fuck and possibly bump into other muthafuckas that be MORE HYPE than me.
TURN UP!
curfew is 9:30PM at the ritz or the general mgr will be ringing your phone asking you to turn the volume down on the tv as it is past lights out.

the best way i've learned to ensure a GREAT room in a GREAT hotel is to slide the check-in person a GREAT tip

example,
if i priceline a lil $100 room at the marriott i'll put a folded $20 bill between my license and credit card before i hand it to them and be all chatty
they will know what the deal is when i ask "i was wondering if you all had any suites available?"
i got good success with that
but at upper end hotels you better come with a $50 or sometimes a $100 because they aint trying to lose their job over no $20 but $100 can pay their light bill!
plus, when you think about it, a suite at The W is like $500+ a night at the Ritz it's about that much or $600 depending upon the nights
so, if you slide them $100 and you're staying there 3 nights, that's only a $30 a night upgrade instead of $250-300 per night upgrade

i've actually had people DECLINE my $100 because there wasn't any available suites
so what they'd do is put me in a room with a better view or something just for me asking

http://i.imgur.com/h8bJ5t5.jpg

last summer at the W in san diego
i asked and got a nope
checked in
went to a regular room
left for lunch
came back

and the same agent that said no was like "welcome back mr. boram, we've upgraded you to a suite and we took the liberty of moving your things for you. here are your new keys"
walked into the room and the above picture was on the living room table
upon check out, i saw the $35 a day parking fee was removed as well
that saved almost $200!!!

oh so later that night we were walking back from dinner and saw the agent that upgraded us was walking to her car as she just got off
i gave her the change from dinner
it was $70 something odd dollars
she wouldnt take the $100 at the front desk counter earlier
(the GM was standing there)
so she actually got shorted a lil bit for waiting

the view we got at The W in Hoboken because there were no more suites

i forgot to add food pics from new orleans:

age groups i'm talkin

just look at the websites

if i'm ready to be on some BONKERS HYPE shit
give me The W

but if me and wifey just want to get away for the weekend and chill then we'd find a Ritz/St Regis/Four Seasons to tuck into (all can be had for less than $150 a night in houston if you know when/where to look)

because W is DEFINITELY for "douchy" 24-39 year old "frat boy" or "wall street" types
slicked back hair
Dolce suit on with the top three buttons undone on their shirt
pull up in a convertible M3

the ritz is more families
senior level manager of some sort
or a grandad with his 8 and 10 year old grandkids
pull up in the S550
it's just a different vibe/scene at The W

even the "elevator music" is vastly different in these places
The W plays EDM and Michael Jackson
Ritz plays Edith Piaf

let's take the one on Poydras in New Orleans off the list because i've stayed there and yes it was shabby but it is now a Le Meridien

out of the 7 or 8 W i've stayed in all but the one on Poydras has been PHENOMENAL

and we know all Ritz aint created equal neither but they are good about closing locations faster than most

you say "a lot of them" are and i asked you specifically and you can't tell me which ones
i posted two locations already
i can continue to go thru my laptop and find more locations i have personally stayed in
but you can go off tripadvisor if you want to

and you say The W rooms are :dated:?
anymore dated than that old ass Louis XIII motif that the ritz and monteleone use?

http://hotelmonteleone.com/accommodations/rooms/

http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/NewOrleans/Rooms/Rooms/Deluxe-Room.htm

vs

http://www.wfrenchquarter.com/rooms/Studio-Suite

im not trying to argue
but heh
i aim to please
i wouldnt send anyone looking to TURN UP to the ritz in new orleans
i dont think ANY ritz i've been to is on turn up mode

i just looked at their main site and i have stayed at 12 W properties
all but the one on poydras (which they dont operate anymore) have been fantastic
if i sound like a W fanboy it is because i'm just realizing i am

this was a couple years ago, but still. It was for my anniversary, told the front desk person we were there for our anniversary, got upgraded to a suite and they waived the daily parking rate from our bill. Also, if you're looking for places to eat, dont ask the concierge, ask the valets or cleaning crew, they'll hook you up with where the locals go, not where the concierge gets kickbacks to send tourists.....
