"Have politics ever gotten in the way of a friendship/relationship 4 U?"
Wed Jan-21-15 04:18 PM by Buddy_Gilapagos

Folks really can't imagine having a homey who is a republican? An Ace who is pro-life? Boyfriend who thinks Bill Cosby is being framed?

Mugs in the other post questioning whether they should boycott Anthony Mackie movies because dude thinks dreads will hold you back.

I get someone may have views so abhorrent that you can't associate with them but to me that would have to be some pretty strong views that are indicative of you being a bad person.

Other than that is it really that serious?

Y'all really don't F with people cuz they got different views than you?

Or to put it another way, have you ever been like "Yo this person is so cool and I'd even date them but I can't get over their views on (Insert view that really doesn't have any bearing on your relationship)"?

her bullshit about the gay definitely makes me call and visit less.
a lot less.

because I don't have the patience for it.

it also affected my relationship with a buddy from college.
he didn't handle me coming out to him well,
and I found myself avoiding the topic of who I was dating after I came out.

which defeats the purpose of coming out because
I came out so I could quit dancing around the subject of who I was seeing.

the bottom line is we talk less because I have less patience for his hangups than I once did.

and although I give those two ppl more wiggle room
for their phobia because they are my ppl,
anybody new I meet will have to be cool with the gay if we gonna be even remotely cool.

I get that it's hard for some ppl.
I don't care.
I'm too old for that shit.

ppl that go on and on about black on black crime
and we are our own worst enemy get no burn, either.

I don't talk about that shit in my freetime anymore.
far too frustrating.

That's someone POV directly oppose to your being.

I don't think I could maintain a relationship with someone who said that they are anti-heterosexual black man.

Can I ask a related but not really question. Did you stop going to Chic-fila?

My black republican friend voted for Obama the first time. I think he sat out the second time.

All the black republicans I know are money oriented entrepreneurs in it for the tax breaks.

and I have a few friends from college who were Republican but I'm pretty sure every Black Republican I know still voted for Obama.

My mom went back to college after I graduated HS and she went to U. of Chicago for her masters. She used to sit in on Obama's lectures.

The way she described him made me uncomfortable. He's tall, lite skinneed with these beautiful dark lips... and when he talks, his voice controls the room.

I was like: WTF. OK, I get it.

has made people less tolerant of those with strong opposing views cause you can always go online and find likeminded ppl

With that said..I have opposing views on a myriad of things with friends and fam -most of my friends either a) don't raise the subject (like religion for example) or they just don't care enough for it to be a debate ...as for fam they are a different situation and we don't debate I usually just say "I don't know about all that" when they get 'on one' and it ends convos

My boyfriend is a police officer and honestly his views on certain situations disgust me. I really don't think I will be with him for long because of opinions like this:

1) He thinks that it was pretty much Garner's fault that he died for resisting arrest.

2) The Trayvon Martin situation, he believes that after being followed Trayvon turned around and fought Zimmerman and once that took place Zimmerman was in his legal right to kill him. (Mind you, this man has a 14 year old son).

3) He thinks black people blow police brutality out of proportion and of course his argument is "black kill eachother everyday, they need to focus on that"

His other (black) cop friends and their SO's share the same views as him. I once got caught up in a debate with them and it was a mess.

Any of my white friends jumping out and gloating over the deaths of innocent black men are not friends. These people could be different versions at different times if circumstances change(d). When they diss them and speak of them, how can I remain friends with them? Matter of fact, I warned people after this latest innocent black death to not say anything to me they couldn't say to my face.

On the celebrity end, I hate token black guy with conservative views that shits on the rest of us and spouts dumb shit. The Jason Whitlocks, Don Lemons, Herman Cains of the world are not worth my energy. These people are not worth my support at all.

...who believed races shouldn't mix when it comes to dating, marriage, and sex. I disagreed with him. Outside of that, I had no problems with dude. Hell, I've known Black folks that felt the same way. I disagreed with them too but had no issues outside of that.

With me, as long as you're not talking way outlandish crap like grown men should have the right to sleep with boys or something crazy of that nature, chances are, I'm not gonna stop talking to you just because we disagree on something that's not going to affect either one of us in the end.

If your political, spiritual, or whatever important beliefs clash with mine on a level where it's not going to harm either one of us, then there's no need for me to end the friendship.

intelligent discussion, or B. Don't bring it up at all, because it may potentially ruin the fun

I'm not 100% open for intelligent discussion in social settings. It often can get in the way of the fun... plus the more I drink, the more smug my argument will come across. I know my faults, so either we are rolling with option B, or we can't roll at all.

Let my love slide in and never slip out

One of the people I most like to talk to about the most things (especially serious shit) is one of these guys who went through the metamorphosis. When he was younger (before I knew him), he was a liberal and a fallen Catholic. Now he is very devout religiously and very conservative politically. He knows his shit and although he hedges in biased directions pretty noticeably at times, I find he often has a balanced perspective and when he doesn't, it really challenges me to define and defend my own opinion better.

My best friend from childhood is into all sorts of funky political shit, like he knows the ins and outs of libertarian-ism, he's identified himself as an anarchist, he knows all kinds of weird ass german economists, etc. Often our politics have clashed and we've gotten in deep ass arguments. I think we have both been forced to think critically during these disagreements.

I would never really let it affect an existing friendship, to be honest.

That said, I do dismiss the fuck out of people who have some cookie-cutter, bumper-sticker-ass political philosophy when I am getting to know them

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I dunno if I could share my life with someone who disagreed with me fundamentally on outlook, but I like having friends around that I can dig deep into debates with.

Having said that, my SO leans slightly to the 'spiritual' end of beliefs... most of the time it's not anything consequential, so I don't bother challenging. We agree on most of the 'important' shit.

One of my good friends in Philly is a real live GOP conservative. Everything about him screams Dem but he is GOP like shit. He used to go around saying he was an old fashion log cabin republican for years... then he found out log cabin republicans = gay and had a moment.

He was a hilarious dude who had no problem buying a few rounds, talking shit about Dems and then asking me if I wanted to go to the washy washy in Old City.

He was also one of the first people to predict Obama would be the first Black Pres. back in 2004. As long as a person knows how to turn that political talk off so we can kick it I'm good.

...but to actually date someone saying slick shit about Blacks? hell to the nah, why would I torture myself like that?

I still laugh cause it's funny and trivial as phuck. I hit him with some facts discrediting the song and he's been but hurt since.

I'll say though, there was a time that Nick was probably worth more than Jay. Before Jay started making money outside of music and pre-live nation money.

I quietly unfriendly her and haven spoken since. I can deal with conservatives, even tolerate republicans and libertarians. But anyone who couldn't see that lady was crazy and even took to big upping her was not someone I wanted around in any capacity.

Because I sure did a lot of quite unfriending before.
I think I only "see" about 30 people on Facebook. And about a third are from here.

I tend to be FAR left on quite a few issues, as well as being a quasi-agnostic who dabbles in Eastern philosophy.

My closest friends and family don't share some of my views, but it's cool.

I've posted some lefty FB posts and threw my two cents in during some watercooler debates that have chased off a few casual friends.

We worked well together despite that shit.

Hell I have a friend who desperately wishes he wasn't black. I think it's annoying but he's my friend.

Hell I dislike most people for one reason or another, why should that stop me from making friends? I know there are things about me that people hate. So what are u gonna do?

I had a friend who's a US Marshall who couldn't get past me being against police brutality. I made a facebook post about it on New Year's eve so I'll just copy and paste that here:

"I wanna get this out so I can leave it in 2014...this year I lost a few friends. Not due to death but because of life. The one that hurt most was a friend of mine that I've known for over 20 years. On Christmas Eve he sent me a text to tell me that we can't be friends because of our different views on the police brutality incidents that have been going on. He works in law enforcement and I know there's a brotherhood in that field but damn, man. For real...It's like that? I don't have time to tell how much he and I have been thru together but I'll put it like this...if you followed the story on "1st High" he's the one who got me out of jail the next day. Met him at orientation freshmen year at ECU and have been friends since...until last week. Tonight i'll pour out a little liquor in memory of the friendship and toast to new ones. Happy 2015!"

Like I don't know if I could be buddies with a Klan member.
But it's easy for me to separate my disagreements with people and my feelings about them as a person.

I actually think I disagree with my close friends on most of the popular/controversial political topics.
We can get into a knock down, drag out debate over pretty much anything then be like "You watching the game over here tomorrow right?"
