"Russell Wilson thanks God after win"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoEBvq0sPCg

does it bother you?

just asking because I knew a certain person at my gig would say something like this:

"Why is he thanking God when he should be thanking his teammates??? If there is a God, he doesn't care about football"

..and he did

it is funny when you realize both teams most likely prayed to god before hand
i guess the losing team is not highly favored

somewhere on the field. It's harder to see/do after a conference championship game due to fanfare but you see it after most regular season NFL games.

while teams pray for success you usually don't hear team prayers that say "God, please help us win"

It's usually "God, please help us to stay safe, play as one and use the talent you gave us to be the best we can be"

just thought it was funny to hear the typical comment from a coworker after watching a great game.

I saw him interviewed after the ATL loss 2 years ago and he was chipper as shit. I ain't never seen a QB that happy after an L. Dude was smiling and upbeat.. he isn't cut from the same cloth as most tho.

he said shit like "I'm just excited to get back on the field and build from this loss"

I bet he thanked God at some point as well.

..and honestly, how many fans give a shit what the losing team/player has to say?

And I do find it refreshing that in some sports there is a total absence of praising the lord. Maybe it's the predominance of players from largely secular countries (though there are plenty of Americans) but in the NHL you just about *never* hear someone thank God.

God is never in the loser's locker room. What a front runner.

I always feel it's best to pray that you play to the best of your abilities, vs actually saying "help ME win." I'm not a fan of the whole "blessed and highly favored" attitude.

it would bother me a whole lot less if any of these "devout followers of Christ" took the time to thank their Creator when they get aired out by 30 points. I'll even give credit for one giving thanks for their talents and blessings in a close loss.

IMHO, it rings very hollow to give mini-sermons after victories and no mention of Jesus/God/whoever in times of defeat. But that's me.

but let's be real...

who listens or checks for the God talk after a 30 point loss?

Even if they said it we wouldn't hear it.

..and when something tragic happens who thanks God for it? That isn't how it works. Most people pray for strength and during prayer will thank God for giving them the change to overcome said struggle.

All of these NFL players are forced to be made available for media access after every game, so the top players on each team have a mic in their face every week, either at the post game press conference or in the locker room. Most of that is aired on post game shows, on NFL Network, etc. I don't specifically listen for it per se, but if it was said, it would be heard, don't kid yourself.

Where to begin...
First, are you seriously trying to equate "losing a loved one in a car crash" to coming up on the short end of the score in a football game? C'mon...

Second, "that isn't how it works"? If a person has the presence of mind to give thanks to the Creator when things are good, but has no inclination to do so when times are tough, I personally have to question the source of that faith. Based on that line of thinking, God should continually be on the lips of the rich and successful and rarely if ever on the lips of the poor and struggling.

If athletes are going to use the interview room as a public forum to express their faith(which is exactly what they are doing), IMHO they should be sure to express their gratefulness to God when things don't go their way on a certain Sunday. Unless, of course, you think that God isn't with you when the chips are down, in which case I give thanks that I know better than that.

the prayer, pre-game (and sometimes we forget. its not ritual, but we usually try to do it).

"Lord, please let us be free from injury, and let everyone have safe travels to and from the game. please let our attitudes and everything we think, say and do be pleasing in your sight. let BOTH teams play to the best of our abilities. Amen".

and the post-game prayer is pretty much the same, except we're thanking him for no major injuries, and for traveling mercies.

we just got BLOWED out tonight,65-24 (playing a VERY good girls varsity team and we're a JV team that plays up). and we thanked God for that afterward, for no one getting hurt, and that we learn from the game (iron sharpens iron).

we thanked God.

We should've thanked the people who made the decision to let our star player participate even though he was a 15 year old turning sixteen still in the eighth grade because he'd been held back. He drove himself to games and dunked all over our opponents.

I'm not definitely saying that it was because of Jesus that we won the championship, but I was our starting 2 guard and I had very little impact. AFAIK Jesus never put on a jersey.

that's how I felt when I was a kid, but they made us pray anyway.

he is thanking God not for providing him with victory (on the field), but the victory in life to even be able to go out and do what he does. he is recognizing that it is not all about him.

there was a time when i didn't understand this and i was just as cynical as a lot of y'all are.

but really. most ppl (except the hardest of the hard core atheists) seem cool with the appeal to a higher power explicit within the 12 step program. if you TRULY believe in a creator and (crazy as it seems to a lot of y'all, and i don't deny that) that you have the ability to commune with that creator through prayer, then your LIFE should be a prayer. you should be privately thanking God on the daily.

but to publicly thank God (not go off into some long, involved prayer as a means of spectacle or self-conscious piety) is to make it clear how you see life. it is demonstrating humility as well as opening yourself up to scrutiny.

if you are consistent in your actions and words, ion't see what the prollem is. russell seems to be the type of dude who would thank God if he found a pack of gum. he picks up and praises his teammates. he gives of his free time. he carries himself humbly (at least from what i can see).

let him cook.

they mostly do what everyone else does -- not say anything, then go live their regular ass life

also, I think it's some bullshit to just say that his "God is Great" comment was applicable win, lose or draw. I haven't seen his postgame playoff interviews after an L (cuz he's usually winning) but I don't think they start that way.

I found Wilson afterward, and asked him about the four picks, and going from the worst game of his life to the most exhilarating in the span of eight minutes of game time.

"That's God setting it up, to make it so dramatic, so rewarding, so special," he said, alone for a moment in the locker room before heading out for the night. "I've been through a lot in life, and had some ups and downs. It's what's led me to this day."

He wasn't even 100% and he outplayed the fuck outta Russ. No one can deny that.

If Mike McCarthy were more aggressive on offense, Packers would be in the Super Bowl.

inconsequential sporting event to be invoking God

What really annoys me is when athletes tap their chest and then point up to the sky lol

Like wtf are they pointing towards the sky for - is God sitting on top of the shot clock or something

I really think it diminishes or miniaturizes ppl's ideal of a supreme being if they think that of all the really serious and life threatening matters going on in the world that this divine being that they believe in and pray to has time to intervene in a game and decides who loses and wins

It's really absurd when you really think abt it

I thought that's what Oliver Stone attempted to subtly capture in "In Any Given Sunday" in the scene where the priest is essentially giving the players a pre-game pep talk using scripture and then he ends the speech with a prayer before the players went out on the field and commenced to trying to destroy each other

75. "why shouldn't they thank God?"
In response to Reply # 74

like, KD worked really hard on being a great basketball player, but that shit never would've happened if he weren't a 6'10 athletic freak of nature

he didn't do special exercises to not be 5'8, so shouldn't he thank God for making his dream come true?

KD becoming a GREAT basketball player was abt him being 6-10 and having a strong work ethic and had nothing to do w/God because if he were 5-8 he more than likely wouldn't be playing professional basketball

Because he's an athletic freak he probably should be thanking nature instead

Don't see why this perspective would be invalid though.

It's easy to thank God when the nature of that thanks and what got you there isn't put up to scrutiny.

Guy praises God for his land holding, and everyone is amazed, but also ignorant of the debts he built up and who is going without in his wake.

People see these things happen and become cynical. It's disingenuous to suggest that it shouldn't be otherwise.

Just IMO though.
