Quite possible the worst movie I have ever seen. No exaggeration. It was repulsive. I left with my stomach hurting. There was a steady stream of people walking out of it. We. Stayed as long as did because we were just trying to figure out what the movie was about. There is something seriously wrong with spike lee. The thought crossed my mind that maybe he has suffered a stroke.
I can't begin to convey how bad this movie was but to give you an inkling snoop from the wire played a hooker and we had to listen to her try to be seductive, talk dirty and eventually saw her naked for waay to long. Want to know what snoop looks like naked? The you and spike and no one else have that in common (hint: imagine a 15 year old boy with small flat boobs).
Not a single recognizable human character. Not a single line of dialogue I could imagine a human uttering. Deeply mysogonistic. I had to leave on a scene involving a baby.
If it weren't a black film festival, he would have been boo'd.

Positives:
+ The cinematography is gorgeous. + As is the production design. + The leads do a good job. There were some points where maybe Spike directed them vaguely and let them kinda go off on their own and it was handled. There were a couple of scenes that seemed pretty improv'd and unscripted. I liked them. + With the Kickstarter budget, they had some limitations but Spike seems to know how to make an inexpensive movie by Spike Lee standards. + This is Spike Lee at his most restrained. Which is kinda funny considering the movie's source material and themes throughout. But restrained Spike is probably our favorite Spike these days.
Negatives:
- The dreaded "Third Act Spike Lee" strikes again. - Bruce Hornsby's score was a bit distracting. At one point I was playing with the audio settings in VLC to see if the score was on a separate track or something so I could just cut it out. - There's a very out of place lesbian sex scene in this flick. It's not out of place because it's a lesbian scene. It's out of place because it's shot strangely. It felt like a Cinemax joint. I think Spike needs to chill on sexuality in his films sometimes. - The tone is really off. It's supposed to play like a horror/black comedy, right? Some of the line deliveries and scene settings show comedy but I think I laughed 2-3 times. Or at least felt like I should be laughing. - Turn on your interpretation goggles because you will have no idea what the movie is about really. It's way too fuckin experimental.
Conclusion: I bought it on VOD for the 10 bucks, started watching it and I got sidetracked with work so I let the 24 hours run out until I found a decent torrent rip. Go ahead and rent it and watch it a couple of times. If you're looking into film? Probably go ahead and buy it or absorb as much as you can. I like this type of Soderbergh (who put up 10k of his own money on DSBOJ) shit because I like to count the budget onscreen in ventures like this. I don't feel like it was a waste at all. Also if you're a Spike enthusiast, why not throw some money at him?
