"The impact of porn on sexual appetite. "

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSF82AwSDiU

Anyone ever catch this talk? Explores a pretty interesting theory that I think is worth considering.

In short, porn destroys a natural and healthy sexual appetite, as real life scenario's cannot meet the diversity and accessibility that porn provides.

If you watch porn regularly, this talk might be for you.

We all have "Turn On's". People who over indulge in porn experience a diminishing sense of their turn on's as they have explored and had access to so many of them quickly and in succession. At a rate that would be impossible to experience in real life.

I am sure that many porn watchers switch categories because the former simply does not do it for them anymore. That impacts real life scenario's and as a result you may not find a naked body stimulating unless X, Y, Z.

We also have muscle memory, and the longer you train yourself to respond to stimuli generated by porn, the less you give yourself the opportunity to be stimulated by real life scenario's. Your body will learn to respond to porn only.

The talk I posted is much more articulate than I was and I highly recommend it.

Like if I am working super hard or in a strange place for work and have no access to sex, I watch porn. I wouldn't say a lot of it, but a little every day.

But then when I am in a normal groove where sex is pretty much a daily thing, I don't watch it all. I don't miss it. Similarly I do miss real sex and find myself more sensitive when I get back to it. Now having a lot of sex desensitizes me to sex a little, but usually a short break takes care of that.

I just don't find any diminished appetite for real human intimacy because of porn. They are two different things to me, even though one is sort of half-assed substitute for the other.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I am a firm believer in moderation. I study Zen Budhism from time to time and there is a portion of it which promotes rascality. It is exactly what it sounds like. A well balanced human being is good; physically and mentally dedicated to promoting/maintaining their health, with a touch of the rascal in his/her soul.

I used to watch a lot more pornography and I started to feel some of the negative effects discussed in the talk I posted. The problem with something like porn, or anything else which provides so much pleasure is that it can consume you and send you on a path where your mind and body can become enchanted/transfixed by it. You raise the personal bar on self satisfaction and if you do not meet it after prolonged use, it becomes difficult to settle into a more content and peaceful state.

A little "bad" is good for the soul. Too much and you start to compromise yourself in the name of fixation.

Long considered a fetish, shaved women got popular in response the explosion of CP when widespread internet access became a thing (and, thus, widespread access to CP), capitalized on by the likes of Larry Flynt and others that pushed the prepubescent look into the mainstream resulting in women shaving their pubes off.

No... not true. Some women shave down their because they get really bad ingrown hairs and they don't like the infections that come with it.

So call me a prepubescent. :p

I'm serious too. Prior to porn magazines/videos capitalizing on a desire for legal CP-ish imagery, you simply didn't see many women that were bald until the late 90's/early 2000's. Strippers kept a strip or patch down there and even porn was mostly pubes until the late 90's.

In response to Reply # 29

I am sure some people here do not like a woman who has pubic hair, and yet, that is precisely the way she was intended to be. It's interesting how media can alter our perception of sexual attraction in such a profound way.

Men in the 70s and 80s did not mind a woman who did not shave. That has clearly and obviously changed through social programming.

Personally, I like when women shave their legs and do not think I could be in a relationship with a woman who didn't. That may be irreversible at this point.

I think that is partly why pornography can be dangerous if abused. You allow a third party to determine what turns you on and off. Imagine the power that can have over people.

Hustler hailed a shaven chick like a fetish and you didn't really see it all that often back then. I can't recall a time up to the late 90's that Playboy or Penthouse had pube-less women. Even Shari Belafonte, who's issue of Playboy graced my coffee table, had pubes.

The first time I saw a lot of women sans pubes was Hustler's "Barely Legal" magazine, whic I was never a fan of 'cause the chicks intentionally looked way too young.

Go back and find as many nude scenes in R and PG movies from the 70's through the mid 90's, if puss was on display, it had pubes.

I've dated both, but prefer women with their legs shaved... You can blame JC Penny catalogs for that.

Difficult to implement proper moderation in a society which promotes mass and constant consumption. I sincerely do not believe people are equipped with the ability to take a step back when needed, and will indulge until their body or mind fails them.

Sometimes I think that we all know things are not quite right, and allow ourselves to self medicate by consuming pleasures. I think in general, we are an over stimulated society. We move "on to the next one" before the previous has run its full course. Always looking to the next pleasure or satisfaction and never truly content or at peace with simply being.

This talk is more geared for people who indulge daily. Eventually, whether you want it to or not, it will affect your body and psyche, and your perception of sex and gender. After some time, it can be difficult to come back to the natural state of human sexuality.

I've posted about this before, but there's a strong faction that refuses to acknowledge the truth. And that's because is believe that many of the pro porn users suffer in silence and denial from their addiction and ruined relationships.

some say its good, others say it's bad... the synopsis of the video is this "In short, porn destroys a natural and healthy sexual appetite, as real life scenario's cannot meet the diversity and accessibility that porn provides."

If you watch porn regularly, this talk might be for you.

So that could be thought of as an abosulte as well. Just saying... lets not turn a good poast into "Let's Get Case_One!"

but having infrequent physical contact + not watching porn is insanity to me

either way, "porn destroys relationships" sounds like a brainwashed person trying to work the same voodoo on others

it's as destructive as liquor, sugar and fattening foods. meaning it isnt at all if you're moderate about it

you got cats in their 20s that can't get their dick up like they are elderly or something.

So imagine not getting pussy, you overdo the fap thing, and then when you DO get some play, your soldier is dead on arrival. Nigga died in the boat before D-Day even started.

it's killing marriages and dating, not for all users but enough for it to be a thing worth discussing. this new shit is waaaaay easier to get than it was even five years ago.

That is essentially what it boils down to. Porn allows us to explore anything and everything at the click of a button, and it is almost immediate, thus we continually raise the level of stimulation needed to be fully erect or turned on.

Fast forward to a real life situation and you no longer have the stimuli you need to fully satisfy the complex sexual needs you created with pornography, and thus, your general fails to do his job because the act of sex has become intellectualized, rather than physically natural.

In essence, the stimuli you have programmed yourself to have to reach climax are no longer present, and problems arise.

Anything in excess can ruin your life and relationships, to say that porn is somehow greater in this is akin to saying that, somehow, homosexuality is a greater sin than eating swine.

Gossip don't take shit but two people to talk.
Food is already in your crib
Alcohol likely down the street

And people get consumed with acquiring money, leaving relationships in shambles and leading to possible criminal charges depending on how far it goes (or maybe you haven't seen "American Greed"). One Ponzi scheme can affect hundreds, thousands, or millions of people if it gets that far.

And folks were saying the exact same shit about it; please explain this.

Everyone didn't have access to porn in the pre-internet days. In some locations you had to go to that -one- seedy shop in town that sold porn... And you didn't want to run the risk of anyone seeing you go in or out of there. At best you might catch a Playboy or something at the gas station but that's about it.

but you can access it anywhere you please..there's food and alcohol everywhere you turn. sure it costs a little more now but not if you factor internet costs plus you are constantly eating and drinking...our lives center around it. people with no smartphones or internet eat and drink. people in random secluded places with no electricity still have access to food and booze. how can you argue that porn is more accessible than food and booze with a straight face?

"clicking" "searching" "multiple tabs" all have dick to do with porn.

Pretty much everything he's said in there is garbage.

Also, real sex does not require an emotional attachment to the other party. Anyone who tells you otherwise lives in some type of puritanical fantasy land.

"Researchers don't know much about the effect of internet porn"...

... seriously... If they don't know much, what, exactly, is this clown basing all of this presentation? It took only 3 minutes to figure out he doesn't know shit, and now he's admitting that they can't even gather good data on this subject...

The authors of that "Dutch study" that claims that sex/porn has the most potential for addiction must have never been to North Korea or China.

I've listened to enough.

This applies to vegans, climate change deniers, these "porn is evil" cats, G. Craig Lewis, religious zealots, and anyone else like that and their followers.

Do I like porn? Yup. Do I watch it a lot? Nope.

But... You're in here trying to defend it pretty hard... Could it be that you just agree with dude and are trying to push your viewpoint even in the face of actual scientific studies that state you're wrong?

The video speaks about the possibilities behind over indulging in watching porn, and the way it could affect your sexuality. The word evil was never written by me or delivered by the speaker.

I didn't engage your points because you haven't seen the video. Definitely not trying to push any views on you so I apologize if it seemed that way. I'm just putting it up for debate, and all that I require is that you watch it as it's the very thing I'd like to discuss.

You admitted that you turned it off after a couple of minutes, so I am not sure how you can comment on the topic or provide links with such certainty. Maybe they don't pertain at all? I just don't follow that type of reasoning. Maybe its important to ask oneself why it is so difficult to absorb a certain idea. Usually it has something to do with the self, or maybe not at all. Because I think pretty much everything that could be discussed regarding this topic has been discussed on this board already. This video brings nothing new to the table and, in fact, was debunked about as fast as The China Study... Maybe faster.

>You admitted that you turned it off after a couple of minutes,

Simple. I googled the presenter's name to see what his angle was. Within the first few minutes of the video you linked he proved he had a bias, so I wanted to see if there was more material out there from him in a similar vein to substantiate my suspicion that he has an agenda. A few hints to this was that only on very rare occasions does he specifically call out a research paper and it's authors, typically deferring to vague shit like "researchers say...". This is a tactic used by guys like this that indicate that, while there may actually be a paper out there that says something along the lines he's presenting, that same paper may also contain additional context that would place the quote in a different perspective and may even be the complete opposite of what he's trying to say.

I found his website which laid out his agenda: He blames his erectile dysfunction on internet porn.

Let's forget the fact that ED has been around far longer than the internet and even longer than photographed pornography. No, it was internet porn that did this horrible thing to him.

I read his Vice interview which pretty much convinced me that this is a guy with an agenda that refuses to acknowledge that scholars (which he is not) have stated the opposite of what he's saying.

Vice: What do you say to those sexologists who look to dismiss the argument that porn can cause ED?

Gary Wilson: Well, they’re wrong. Prominent urologists are starting to write articles about it. On top of that we’ve had two brain studies from Cambridge University and one from the Max Planck institute. The Cambridge one found the same kind of brain changes that occur with drug addicts and 60 percent of those subjects suffered from issues such as ED and loss of libido. The German study correlated the hours of porn use a week and the years of porn use with firstly the structure of the reward circuits. They found a correlation suggesting that those who watch porn actually have less grey matter.

It's this ^^^ that the article I linked debunks.

"Fascinating, rigorous new research has now been done, which actually examined the brains of alleged sex addicts, and guess what? The results are a bit different than the rhetoric. In fact, the results don’t support that sex addiction is real, or reflects any unique brain-related issues at all.

In research invited for submission to the journal Socioaffective Neuroscience of Psychology, authors Steele, Staley, Fong and Prause used EEG testing to examine the effects of visual erotica, on the brains of people who felt they had problems controlling their porn use. 52 sex addicts, including men and women, had their brain’s electrical activity examined while they looked at erotic imagery. Sex addiction theory predicts that these individuals would show brain patterns consistent with that of cocaine addicts, who demonstrate specific electrical changes in the brain’s activity, in response to drug-related cues. Sex addiction proponents, from Rob Weiss to Carnes have long argued that sex and porn are “like cocaine” in the brain.

But, when EEG’s were administered to these individuals, as they viewed erotic stimuli, results were surprising, and not at all consistent with sex addiction theory. If viewing pornography actually was habituating (or desensitizing), like drugs are, then viewing pornography would have a diminished electrical response in the brain. In fact, in these results, there was no such response. Instead, the participants’ overall demonstrated increased electrical brain responses to the erotic imagery they were shown, just like the brains of “normal people” as has been shown in hundreds of studies."

What's really puzzling is that Gary himself doesn't even believe the shit he spews 100%. He even states:

"VICE: So the main premise of your book is that you can either watch porn or have sex, but you can't have both, right?

Gary Wilson: It is of course possible to have both. But for some guys it is difficult to have both. With internet porn some guys are having not only erectile dysfunction (ED) but they're also having other sexual symptoms such as inability to orgasm, delayed ejaculation, declining libido with real partners, loss of attraction to real partners and also very commonly their sexual tastes at least in porn have morphed into something which is strange and upsetting for them."

"Some guys"??? That's like saying "Some people die from influenza, so everyone must be innoculated from the terror that it 'The Flu'" (protip: the average number of deaths from influenza for the last 31 years is ~23K with a high of 48,614 and a low of 3,349). In a country of over 330M people, I'd say influenza is the least of our worries just like in a world where nearly 3 billion people are on the internet "some guys" having issues controlling their urges to watch porn 24/7 is kinda laughable as a "problem".

But even he acknowledges that it's absolutely possible to consume porn and have a healthy sex life... So what's really the problem??? "Some guys" that can't get it up after watching some Sasha Grey flicks?

Gary Wilson is not a professional. He holds no PHD in any field of study related to ED or even psychology. He's a guy that collected bits and pieces of shit from the internet and wrote a book.

>Maybe they don't pertain at all? I
>just don't follow that type of reasoning.

Within the first couple of links Google provided was an article in Psychology Today that I linked earlier. It specifically called out Gary Wilson and his TED presentation.

>Maybe its important

Why is it so difficult for Jews to accept Jesus?
Why is it do difficult for Christians to accept Mohammed
Why is it so difficult for Muslims to accept Baha'u'llah
Why is it so difficult for vegans to accept that people eat meat?
Why is it so difficult for anti-porn people to accept that some people like to watch it?

are you the CEO of Bangbros, fam? Are you Lexington Steele? You goin hard like a decline in porn use would fuck with your pockets or something.

Fact is, the ubiquity of internet porn makes it easier for young people to use it compulsively. There are plenty of people who can use it without negative effects, but there are a rising number of people who can't and they need help and information about the cause of their addiction.

It's hard to do adequate research because you need a control group and you can't find young 20 somethings that haven't watched porn.

On reddit there's a group called NoFap with over 100k members. Ages range from 13 to 40, there's women in there who are addicted, men's girlfriend's and wives in there asking for help, people who have lost jobs for looking at P at work compulsively and ton of people with porn induced sexual dysfunction who *SURPRISE* were able to achieve a healthy erection 1 to 3 months after giving up porn. In addition to having more energy, no brain fog, better in social situations, more self-control, etc.

You gunna tell over 100,000 people...that they need more people? Okay bruh.

So it's not porn that's doing it, it's a constant fap cycle...

Also, I trust Reddit users about as much as I do 4chan's /b/ board.

"Seeing naked bodies and people fucking doesn't mean you need to jack off to it".

... 'cause the bottom line is this.

If you take every time you see porn as a reason the rub one out, the issue isn't porn; the issue is the way you equated every occurrence of "titties" with "I must masturbate", which just ain't how shit works.

Do you always drink to get drunk? Do you always eat to get stuffed?

No, not everyone that watches porn does so with the explicit intent to fap to it.

we are specifically discussing the impact of pornography on a screen vs real life experiences. not whether or not people felt stimulated to pornography even though they were addicted to it. what the experiment should have done, is used real people as opposed to "erotic images", as ultimately that is what is the defining factor between experiencing pornography on your computer to satisfy your sexual needs vs. a real human being. i don't think they are comparable experiences.

It can mess you up but it doesn't have to at all. Sure, it could probably ruin you for 'boring' or 'bad' sex where's both folks aren't trying to take care of each other's needs. Or sex with someone you don't care about. But if you love the person you're with and you find that person even mildly attractive, porn should basically be like 'game film' that you use for ideas of how you might add on or switch things up with that person. In this way, my wife is a benefactor of me watching porn. I now apply what I've seen over the years to/with her. I have always enjoyed porn more when the women are built similarly to women I've most recently had good sexual experiences with. And luckily for me and probably not accidentally, there's several porn girls that have the 'positive bigness' that my wife has. Tmi? Oh well...sorry...

And I'd have to be classified as a heavy porn watcher..especially if my whole adult life is considered. I found my parents stash as a teen...3 vhs tapes. One was a 6-hour comp and it was killer. VDR etc.I had sex before I masterbated. In college, I put together my own stash of 10 or so vhs tapes. My early sex life was fortunate...aka girls let me have at it when they let me have it, so average 1 on 1 porn wasn't necessarily 'wild' to me. After that, I met a chick who did not and would not give head, we had bad sex a few times, it ruined me mentally for a couple years, and I fell on hard times as I worked a lot, etc. I had some runs as a single dude in the high speed internet era. And I saw a gang of stuff. I know names..lots of names. I bought DVDs. Lots of DVDs. And even now, I still watch from time to time. About an hour a week on average Id guess. That is way down from before I met the wife for sure. I can take it or leave it, but why leave it if I don't have to? I think it puts me more in a frame of mind to properly ''handle' my wife when the door gets locked at night or if I wake up and find myself with a wife who wants to do something.

And I could watch porn 20 minutes before an episode with my wife and it is still very on. My sex drive only dips when I'm stressing a lot, eating super poorly, and/or not working out. And even then, it just takes a few days off and it's back on.

Also, I had a strip club phase. It lasted a few years. AND yes I slept with some skrippas outside of the cluuub. Maybe THAT and my fortunate beginnings helped mute whatever bad stuff porn does to some folks. Or maybe my wife is pornish enough to take care of me and I'm okay for now. Maybe if she stopped being what I needed sexually, I'd go super sideways. Maybe not.
