After watching season 2 I felt like I learned abt a dying industry in Baltimore, something I knew nothing abt beforehand, and it gave another angle to how America is fundamentally broken on so many socio-economic levels

Brother Mouzone never seem grounded in The Wire's reality and his team-up with Omar felt like a comic book team-up.

Marlo is not a compelling character. He's a one-dimensional boogeyman...a synechnoche for the new generation who doesn't play by the rules.

Hamsterdam was ridiculous. Not that there aren't area's where police allow open-air drug markets, but the cops actually kidnapped corner boys to relocate them there.

even omar isn't as interesting when you know what's coming (not at the end, just in general)

marlo becomes more interesting once chris & snoop become more interesting, and they don't really have much to do in S3.

I still find him to be a wildly compelling character. And the part is acted so well.

I'm actually kind of disgusted by these criticisms, if I'm being honest.

He's a bow-tie wearing muslim assassin who loves reading The New Republic?

he has a single assistant who does not understand or seem to really know him at all, despite being with him continuously over (at least) several months.

he's a badass assassin, but we only really ever see him do a couple of things. he works for people we never meet and are never described. he has no backstory to speak of, and goes nowhere in the future

that description is a fucking joke.

in respect to him, the gay element feels as tacked on as it is. maybe that's because we've learned more about the real guy, maybe not. it's a interesting thing, but not as interesting as it was in 2001.

for a guy with a code, his morality / crew / circumstances jump around kind of as needed in order to keep the plot moving.

And yes, with 12 hour long episodes per year it's definitely impossible for every single character in a show with such a huge cast to have a thorough, complete lifelong backstory to accompany what we see of them. So I don't really think that's a fair criticism. Some characters, naturally based on time constraints, are just not going to be as deeply fleshed out as others.

That said, I think writers on The Wire, better than any show I've ever watched, did a great job of humanizing every character to the best of their abilities, though some characters were more fleshed out than others. There's no avoiding that. I just find these complaints atrocious because you guys are all basically grasping at straws. Literally every other show ever made has way worse offenses than The Wire when it comes to character development. The only character I truly ended up not liking upon second and third viewings was Marlo. I thought they did the "worst" job with fleshing his character out. But that said, I wouldn't list him as a negative or anything like that.

Edit: while you're complaining about Mouzone, I must say that I honestly believe that he was presented and maintained as "mysterious" by design. I think that his shadowy nature was a huge PART of his character and not just lazy writing. I thought this was obvious, personally.

Well I mean...yea, the element of surprise is taken away everytime you watch something more than once. Doesn't mean that his impact on the show is lessened. Just means you've seen it before. Illmatic wasn't a great album because I've heard it before. What?!

Simon has often talked about how him and the writer envisioned Marlo to be completely unsympathetic, and never delve into his back-story. It was a contrast to "getting to know" everyone in the Barksdale crew for three seasons. He was supposed to be the "demon" that one of the homicide detectives described him as early in Season 3, and the new breed of Baltimore gangsta. It's kind of echoed in Herc and Carver's conversation with Poot also early in Season 3 ("These kids out here are like the crack babies' crack babies") and especially Colvin's convo with Wee-Bay at the end of Season 4, where they talk about how the Baltimore they grew up in is dead, and how these streets will kill Naymond within two years.

This design for Marlo is why I don't find him really that interesting after Season 3. As a "villainous" foil for the Barksdale crew, he works. As a central character, not so much. Which is part of why I think Season 4 is kinda overrated. And why I think people who say Season 3 is bad are on that narcotic.

I'm usually of the "no opinion is wrong" ilk but anyone who doesn't see the genius in this show, at least in the writing of the characters, if not every single other thing about the show, is a moron.

Breaking Bad was a great show. Does not hold a candle to The Wire in terms of ..... anything.

I'm not related to nor friends with anyone involved with the show. I have no relation to Baltimore nor any friends or relatives there. I am not a police officer and have no significant ties to any. Same deal with drug dealers/the drug games. I know not a single dock worker. What "bias" (if you are using it by the correct definition) could I possibly be depending on to form my opinion?

I've just seen a million different TV shows, dramas, comedies, documentaries alike...and I've never seen a show as thorough as The Wire in any regard.
