"Favourite book you read this year"

Doesn't have to be published 2014.
Why did you like it?
In the light of what we know.Zia Haider Rahman
Horrible title but so glad I took the plunge.
Dense read that's carried by superb writing. It's all over the place in a good way and plenty of easter eggs for third world transplants with backgrounds in a academia or have parents who do.Can't recommend it enough.

I'm struggling to remember the fiction I binge-read over the summer, but I enjoyed Half Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan (sp?). I went through a few Hanof Kureishi titles too, and he's always so funny.

This is a part two but really it is like a pre-quel.
It just shed so much light on the original.
Gave everything more meaning.
Now I'm going to go back and re-read the original.

but I think I'll go with Station Eleven, by Emily St. John Mandel

Closely followed by:
The Bone Clocks, by David Mitchell
Neverhome, by Laird Hunt
A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, by Anthony Marra

For sure the best audiobook I listened to was Apple Tree Yard, by Louise Doughty, read by Julia Stevenson.

And I first started reading Denise Mina's books this year, which was great. Her books may not be five star reads but they're consistently 3.5 to 4 and I needed a good feminist mystery writer.

I went to Barnes & Noble the other day to buy Bone Clocks, but they were sold out....I felt like getting my snob on and asking them "how the fuck do you not buy enough copies of a David Mitchell book?" but I didn't. I'm also a Dostoevsky fan so I want to read Notes from the Underground & other short stories.

In response to Reply # 0

It's a pretty good twist on travel. Very cinematic and August is one of the most genuinely likable characters in recent years.

I'll just pull the description from Amazon:

***************

SOME STORIES CANNOT BE TOLD IN JUST ONE LIFETIME.

Harry August is on his deathbed. Again.

No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes.

Until now.

As Harry nears the end of his eleventh life, a little girl appears at his bedside. "I nearly missed you, Doctor August," she says. "I need to send a message."

This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.

"The Men Who Would Be King: An Almost Epic Tale of Moguls, Movies, and a Company Called DreamWorks"

It's a history of DreamWorks Pictures, the studio that Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Gefen started in 1994 with the intent on creating a new major Hollywood studio.

Didn't quite work out ,as you may know. And the road from sugar to shit is a great story, as good as some of DreamWorks' bst films ("Almost Famous","American Beauty")

I mainly do audio books now since my job affords me the time to listen while I do other things, and hearing him narrate his own life story was both intriguing and cringeworthy. It's a fascinating book, and while I want to revisit it multiple times, some of the things he talked about are incredibly hard to take in without being disgusted.

I don't usually do "self help" looking books, but this could probably get filed under that. Really good layman's guide to neuroscience and cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness. Very entertaining read.
