"Office Ish: Am I a snitch??"

I sent the following email to my supervisor and her supervisor...was there some other course of action I should have taken?

"Good Morning,

I am covering for Ms. **** today. While I don’t have a problem being a team player and assisting where needed, I do take issue with work not being completed intentionally. I made Ms. **** aware of a PG Medicaid application that at the time was 50+ days old. When I came in this morning that same PG application was on my desk with a note asking for me to process the case. I also received a call from M**** J***** ADAPT#xxxxxxx wondering the status of her case; the customer stated that **** said she would call her for a phone interview back in November and she never received a call. The customer’s application has been on file since November 17th, the case was never pended and no interview was conducted.

As her back-up person, I receive a great deal of calls from her customers in regards to the untimely processing of their cases. I do what I can to prevent the customers from escalating to upper management or to the director, but this pattern of leaving work when we are already bogged down with our own caseloads is starting to become a problem.

I will not penalize the customer when they have done everything that they are supposed to do in a timely manner and I will process these two cases by close of business today.

Respectfully,

Jellybean"

1.) Verbal to the person

2.) Verbal to the supervisor

3.) Written to the person

4.) Written to the supervisor

You have to respect the chain of command or else you risk not having a paper trail to fall back on. You presented a problem, but you didn't have a record of it being an issue over time, just this once.

Not saying it's "bad" but you could have handled it better.

1 & 2 don't help with a paper trail anyway.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

So you can say, "On 12/18/14, I brought this up to him/her and then followed up with our supervisor on 1/5/15."

Protocol is what it is.

thats more for a supervisor. thats way to much work for a regular dude that just wants to stop having to cover someone else's work.

Email them....then email a boss.

So you have to ask yourself, "What happens if/when this gets to HR?"

Whenever a dispute between coworkers gets to HR, it's at the point where there's going to be some kind of disciplinary action taken. Now, just because you're the aggrieved party, that doesn't mean that you'll be in the right. When HR asks things like, "Did you communicate this issue to your coworker?" or "Did you try to resolve this on your own?", if your answer is no then you're taking the air out of your case. So you want to be buttoned up so that, if someone's gonna get some shit put in their file, it won't be you,

if you come in there with 12/18 i spoke to A
and then 12/25 i spoke to b about A
and then 12/27 i emailed A
and then 12/30 i emailed b about A

it looks like you was out to get A lol

A simple i emailed A on 12/18 and when that was unsuccessful i emailed b on 12/25 gets the job done too.

but this is the same lady who filed a restraining order against one of my other co-workers because the other co-worker asked her to stop emailing her and to refer to the supervisor if she had any issues.

I have to take off work to go to court to testify as a witness over this shit because she filed criminal charges when the restraining order got overturned.

you snitching her out is more likely to cause her to file a restraining order on YOU next instead of tightening up her behavior. (IMHO)

I'd be concerned that that email got out and she went out on 'stress', using that email as grounds.

be careful. You gotta work there.

So from the beginning it makes you look very emotional and immature.

There's definitely a better way to have gone about that.

For starters, leave her supervisor out of it in the beginning. Just communicate your concern (without bold accusations) to your supervisor. If you're in good standing with your supervisor, he/she will give her supervisor a call to communicate the issue.

You may have damaged your own reputation more than you did hers.

It's not an accusation...I can see her from my desk, I can hear her gossiping on the phone all day, shopping online and I see her get up from her desk every 15 minutes to smoke cigarettes. I see her not doing work and trying to pass the buck to our new team members...I see all of this

Your perception of her performance is irrelevant and isn't earning you any points.

Just state the facts.

Factual cause (i.e. this wasn't done in a timely manner).

Factual effect (i.e. it created more work and potential stress for me).

That's it.

so this reads to me that she heard about it or was made aware of it and goes to teh girl like "yo, this is 50 days old, can you handle it?"

girl "sure"

she never does and the ONE day that JellyBean is covering she puts a note on that EXACT application like "you do it."

that's some bullshit and I would have been pissed too. I would have done things differently though, I would have hit old girl with an email, cc'ing my boss

"hey xyz,

i'm working on the items you left for me to do and i noticed that the late application i asked you about in nov was on this stack for me to complete. i was unaware you weren't able to finish it and now the client whatever has been delayed. in the future, if you are unable to finish the application processing when i alert you to them, can you please let me know so the client won't be penalized? I'm sure after I alerted you it wasn't your intent to leave it uncompleted and i dont' mind helping you, but please let me know in advance."

there I state yes i told you about this before, yes i will do the work, in the future let me know if you won't do this shit...so next time I can go straight to your boss and say "this the shit i'm talking about."

She should be aware of a 50+ day late application. was there something complicated about the application? If not I'd just do it and my next review I would bring up that I'm doing 2 people's work. If there was something complicated I wouldn't process it unless my supervisor stated that it needed to be done today

"not sure if you spotted this, but please <advise/review>"

day or two after that hit up user and supervisor saying "havent heard back from you on this. can someone please assist, or point me in the right direction?"

make it look like you willing to do it though it's not really on you. dry snitching at it finest. plus you done gave the person two chances in writing. that way they know you weren't sleeping on the task. i'd always rather have something in email than trying to remember a conversation i had with someone a few days prior.

as a manager, i'm more mad at the people in charge than i am at your deadbeat coworker.

management should have her on some type of performance improvement plan and her work should be watched closely.

and who is managing your backlog? 50 days to process an application? fuck she applying for, the CIA? you got customers calling over and over cuz stuff not being done and it's YOU that has to take action? where the hell is management on this?
