"People won't get Michelle Obama's 'racist' Target example."
Wed Dec-17-14 01:21 PM by lightworks

They talked about racist experiences to People mag and Michelle used the example of Target (even as First Lady all she saw was someone that could help her get something off of a shelf)...instantly when I read that I thought "Uh oh folks are gonna say they just asked her because she's tall and that's not a good example". Read some comments on the article and I was right!

What yall say?

we tend to be looked past, looked over, looked through more than looked AT.

we're a peripheral object to many many many MANY people.

I think it was a great example.

And i'm by no means an Obama Stan......

I get mistaken for sales people in stores 9 times out of 10 when I go into the mall.

Just to get my revenge I love to ask random white folks if they work in stores to see their confused reaction.

many of us live in areas w/ sizable black populations, so it's easy to forget that
this country is mostly full of non-black folks.

well, there are more Latinos now i guess.

still.

saying "fuck potential allies that don't get it already" is a fool's game.
believe me, i get the appeal of saying "fuck you" in your mind
to ppl that don't get it.

but to get some actual change, we need broader support.
we need more ppl.

you think the gays could've made the headway they have w/o allies?
niggas need allies too.

>but to get some actual change, we need broader support.

What change? Change America? On an individual basis I think allies are definitely important in achieving some kind of success or normalcy in our daily lives as black people in America, but on a larger scale it's a wrap. If folks can watch a man die at the hands of police while posing no threat and have a coroner call it murder and not charge anyone then it's sewn up. It's chinatown-- game over man. Yeah every so often "justice" will throw us a bone, but "black people" as a whole-- we're in the wrong place. This country and it's system can not be retrofitted to provide anything close to social and economic equality, just the illusion of it.

The other day I read how 25,000 whites walked off the job at a factory during WWII because they didn't want to work next to black people. Can you imagine? Folks would have rather lost to Japan and Germany than be equal in LABOR. They would prefer the rape of Nanking happening in LA before they'd work alongside a black person. So if folks want to be that into themselves why not let them!?

>you think the gays could've made the headway they have w/o
>allies?
More or less yeah I do. It's way easier to be sympathetic to gays than to blacks because gays can be white too and can easily gain access to areas of influence and have for some time I would wager.

>niggas need allies too.
Our allies walk away or we get away from them. Quakers, Jews, Native Americans (some of whom recently disowned their black tribe members), and so on. Why? because it's a never ending battle for us and people just don't have that kind of stamina.

to go where?
for what?

and why?

and besides, all it takes is the libertarians to catch on to the fact
that the 4th amendment has been ripped to shreds by the war on drugs
and boom-- it's no longer a race issue.

it's a cops are taking our freedom issue.

but i ain't gonna argue w/ you about it.
all i can say is i am externally MLK and internally Malcolm X.
i can't put it another way.

unless you are planning a revolution (where we are outmanned and outgunned)
or an exodus from America (to where? for what reason? with what funds?)

then yes, we need to build it from the ground up here in America.
chasing away allies is not the way to go about it.

in fact, it's almost a cop out to view it that way.
if a plan is doomed to fail, why bother?

nah.

that ain't the way.

do you though.

That much is clear. Malcolm said it wouldn't be black vs white in the end, but have vs have not. That's probably the best we can hope for and after that happens and assuming we aren't fully exterminated, placed in camps, or deported (because they do things like that) then yeah whatever black folks are left can help build something better hopefully, but nothing short of collapse can bring forth that kind of change. It may sound cynical or pessimistic, but it's more the reality than expecting change to come through "peace" it just doesn't work like that.

That you're tired of trying to convince folks that people are born gay or that it's ok
to make the choice?

Is that because you feel like that struggle is over?
Do you have different rules for a racial struggle?
Do you feel like this is a different kind of convincing?

What gives?

Although I doubt anyone has asked him personally to park their car (at least not in a long time), it was clearer and made more sense.

I am not black but I am tall. I get asked if I work in a store all the time, and at odd times. I will be wearing a fucking hockey jersey and shorts and some lady is like "Do you work here? Will these shoes fit my son who is 13 years old?"

And I have to reach up and get shit for people all the time, in stores, on planes, etc, etc, etc.

Unless there was some context she didn't provide, I thought it was underwhelming and I'm a tepid supporter. Of course her opponents and the people who think of race as some oddball two-way street (e.g. "Why are there no protests when police are killed by criminals?" and other idiotic questions) would think even less of it than that.

I don't get why she wouldn't think this through a little more.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
