In response to Reply # 7

that other options lack.

Hamburger Helper ain't (as) cheap (as instant ramen).

cream of mushroom soup ain't eaten alone like ramen (or even Helper).

Vienna sausages speak more to old age and hoboness - they're not as ubiquitous as instant ramen.

boxed mac and cheese is nearly as cheap as instant ramen and is nearly as ubiquitous and bamma-fied.

but instant ramen still wins b/c they still sell that shit for like 10 to 25 cents per pack.

the closest other item is probably Kool-Aid which also sells for 10 to 25 cents per and is found in many poverted households.

fuck you.

I've heard it used and could get behind it (unironically).

I feel like 75% of the people use it ironically or sarcastically but it is slowing taking hold as a real thing.

A lot of regular/non-struggling folk mess with ramen, Viennas, and Spam. Potted Meat on the other hand? That's the bottom of the struggle food barrel IMO.

but i disagree w/the premise of this post - that the fact that foodies are into ramen at restaurants** means ramen consumption is no longer useful to shame the poor.

if anything it's now necessary to be more specific - we have to shame poor ppl by calling it INSTANT ramen. b/c the stuff in grocery stores that sells for pennies on the dollar is instant ramen.

**...of course, the real point of this post is homie is proud that he knows ramen is hip in big cities.

fuck you.

36. "totally different types of ramen"
In response to Reply # 0

I think there is some confusion between the 2 types of Ramen out there....

there is the hydrated packs you can buy in grocery stores and bodegas for 8 for $1 with the little flavor sodium packs....and then there is ramen from ramen shops, which are all over Japan and becoming more popular here in the US which is made with fresh noodles, a real broth, pork belly, and lots of other goodness...

they are both ramen, but in totally different leagues.

that's somewhere in the lower-middle....definitely an elevated ramen, but still can't compare to handmade noodles in a broth that has been marinating 24hour plus.

true ramen is an art and a way of life

and still make a cheap meal.

You need pork/beef/chicken stock.
You can make or buy that.

Veggies fresh or frozen. Frozen is cheaper obviously.

Eggs

if you got a protein toss it in.
