+call and response

(horn use for zapp outside of heartbreaker)

this song uses both elements strongly

it does reference the whole west coast snap thing by a lot but I would place it close to MD and the Time before Zapp

The lyrics have that call-and-response thing Morris (aka Prince) copped from the Black church via James Brown, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, Sly Stone, George Clinton, et al. And that braggadocio also apes Morris/Prince via Blues acts like Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Screaming Jay Hawkins, et al.

fuck you.

and it's mainly because they have no connection to it. when i lived in europe and saw these "boogie" par tie sin germany, france and amsterdam i was shocked to see all of these europeans getting down to some of the unknown stuff that i remembered from my childhood.

as the boogie sound has came in into the mainstream (daft punk, bruno, etc) it's been somewhat interesting to see who picks up on it in america. it's definitely some over 30 stuff.

Good morning Miss Lovely...

I mean...we don't dance. Cats go to the club and do what to this? I can perhaps see it hitting at the strip club but if you don't feel Bruno or think his music is too mainstream or pop

Its you not him

i don't view black kids today as having the same influence on things of quality or redeeming artistic value as i think my generation (whether we're talking street or boho shit). but a part of me winces seeing that there are no young black artists digging through these same influences, only whites/euros/others. its almost too formulaic to see bruno with all of those brothers behind him, and kinda twilight zone-ish.

it's just such a weird time for black music, and with music traditionally being somewhat a reflection of black culture's standing on some fronts, it makes me realize how much of a weird time this is for black americans.

I must also add...

I don't this would be successful if black artists did it...

Ppl can say they want it... but ultimately the mass market doesn't.. this works for bruno and mark and tuxedo and that ilk because they aren't black...

China never worked for Chris and De Ja Vu never worked for Beyonce

If they were it'd be Dam Funk and relegated to the underground

Could be that maybe its TOO on the nose if a black artist does it... if you do it so well and so close to the source material that there is literally nothing new to it then ppl prolly just go.. thats cool and shrug there shoulders..

another MJ is not a thing anybody can be,
so it should not be used as benchmark.

MJ wasn't the "closest thing" the 80s had to the Beatles.
it was entirely its own thing.

i am not harping on you in particular.

any kind of comparison to MJ's magic and succeed drives me up the wall,
because the comparison does a disservice to JT/ Beyonce/ Usher/ Bruno/ whoever
AND it short changes MJ's legacy.

But that's exactly the reason they will never be it.

MJ had influences like anybody else... but he didn't become MJ by being a copy of anybody else.

Bruno Mars makes a song and video like "Treasure" or Justin releases Justified and everybody says they're the next Michael Jackson because they make "Michael Jackson-sounding music."

But the only reason Justin even made Justified is because the Neptunes gave him the songs Mike turned down because even HE wasn't interested in making "Michael Jackson-sounding music."

I'm gonna give Beyonce some props because she has perfected certain moves that belong to her. She has a persona that is immediately recognizable and associated only with her. And she is taking on the beyond-mortal stature of MJ, Elvis, Prince, etc.

She's not the next Michael but I believe she will be a god of music, if she's not already.

Bruno and JT are not gods and they never will be. They're just competent performers.

Well... Bruno is, anyway.

Katy Perry is like Michael Jackson because she had five number #1 singles from one album just like MJJ.

See, I made the comparison and the world didn't collapse.

I think Bruno Mars can be like MJJ in that he could have a diverse global fan base that cuts across race, genres of music and ages.

I was at a resort that hosted alot of weddings last summer and Bruno Mars was the only artist that every single wedding rocked out to. Young Black People, Old White People, Europeans, etc.

My 73 old dad digs him as much as I do.

We are not desecrating the sacred memory of MJJ by saying that there could be another star as big as MJJ.

But I'm talking about cultural impact and icon status.... that's not necessarily "sentimental" but it's definitely something very real.

Because Michael Jackson is more than just stats.

Garth Brooks has had a gazillion #1s but it's not like you can go to the most undeveloped corner of the Third World and find kids without access to electricity singing "Friends in Low Places."

Some artist have purposely made tracks that try to make tracks that sound like MJJ tracks but this song doesn't sound like a MJJ song. It does sound like an attempt to cross genres and appeal to a wide age group by employing retro sounds.

In response to Reply # 23

b/c that record clearly borrows production elements from James Brown records.

if the Gaye family wins then the Browns might be able to successfully sue Ronson for making a record that sounds like Brown even if it doesn't include any samples or interpolations of James Brown records.

fuck you.

Let's see, Zapp & Roger, Morris Day and the Time, MJ, maybe Frankie Smith, Trinidad James ... I probably missed some.

Track is aight but I miss when originality was halfway striven for. I mean a lot of these songs today are mash-ups of stuff that already existed, in a way that even hip hop isn't.

the instrumentation ebbs and flows so really it sounds like one artist at a time at different points on the track. mars himself manages to rip off lyrics from one artist and delivery from another.

one i acknowledge that pop music is kind of by definition crap, or at least most of it. i have a lot of critical things to say about past eras, too.

and i think that this kind of stuff goes WAY beyond the sort of mosaic style of hip hop, where they tried to create an original product from already-seen elements. this is more trying to create an unoriginal product from ostensibly organic, new elements. it's a true ripoff in that sense.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

There wasn't time for it to be a throwback... it was really an sincere express of the style of its day. It's not very 50s sounding at all.

And it's a great example, I think, of why Pharrell needs to and should win the suit against the Gaye family. Records like this are in jeopardy if the Gayes win. Or, records like this become more expensive to make, at least, if folks like Ronson would have to compensate each of the producers who made records with sounds and feels that inspired a record like 'Uptown Funk'. I don't think 'UF' borrows notes from any particular copyrighted composition but I suspect it borrows unprotected production elements from a few.

fuck you.

I don't care what style of music they bit from older artists or whatever, it was a great performance and I miss performances like those. Bruno Mars killed it both times he performed as the musical guest on SNL. It was a good time on stage and it translated well into the audience and t.v. viewer. Big up to Mystikal, he fit very well on the "Feel Right" song. Good to see him back.

And yeah, that shit GOES. It's the only song I played twice, bc I wanted to see how the early crowd AKA White crowd, and the late crowd AKA Black crowd, would respond.

White folks loved it, and the Black crowd (30+) definitely loved it...one lady started pop locking to it. And as a DJ, it makes it EAAAASY to go directly into some One Way or Roger, which we don't get a chance to transition to straight from a brand-brand new song.

So yep, count me in on it.

Heard this on Annie Mac's BBC show last week hand delivered by Benji B itself

DJ friendly instrumental done in the grand tradition of disco remixes of the past, truly re-mixed at the same desk it was recorded on originally.

Funky as fuck.

I don't know what y'all are talking about, I'm not mad at this look for Ronson at all

Half of the record is in this vein, the other half is more of a spacey-funk (but not P-Funk) vibe

It's cool, insert some lame joke about this being cool music for hipsters here

rekkid

stands out a little and sounds different

maybe it will help push out a lot of this tired '80's synth and regurgitated '90's CaptainHollywoodProject/Snap/RobinS shit

also used to be not all pop songs were made for the club

would like to see some more of that again, but that's another thread

yes, I'm old man ranting
