though the fact that she and Stevie changed their names after she split from the dad says a lot.

As for Aretha, the rumor AFKAP brings up is pervasive, but apparently there's a rumor that her second son's father may have been Sam Cooke?

I know I read Mark Ribowsky book, but I can't remember if he addressed it at all, though... Papa was definitely a rolling stone in any case.

(Finally got around to copping Ribowsky's Tempts book yesterday. I look forward to reading that)

I heard about Sam fathering one of Aretha's kids too... It's pretty much "known" that she slept with Sam when she was 13 or so...

just a little bit less.

The best parts are the in-depth coverage of each Tempt's early years (Ruffin's early story sounds like a 40s version of "Precious"), and the coverage dedicated to the controversies surrounding Paul Williams' murder. I wasn't really terribly fond of his attempts to break down the music itself.

not so much that I "dislike" her, but I haven't thought of her in terms of her innocent "Marvin & Tammi" image in years... Bettye Lavette's book and "Unsung" contributed to that as well. But yeah, I know she was a hood chick.

I'm very interested in the Paul Williams stuff, too... how a dude picks up a gun with his right hand and shoots himself in the left side of the head et al...

she's focused on her silly dreams of being a movie star
and now she's smelling herself so she's trying to boss the bull around.

at best, it's off putting.
but it might be outright chauvinist.

it usually skip to the seque and where were you when i needed you.
which is a shame because musically the song is gorgeous.

You know after Stevie blew up big time, Syreeta felt that he owed it to her to write her a hit album too... even after they broke up, she stayed on his case about it and he was pretty depressed about it.

(Funny, I never thought about it until now... she wants to "boss the (Black) Bull around..." Crazy that I didn't catch that directly autobiographical reference)

Anyway, Stevie tried... produced two (excellent) albums for her and couldn't break her.

In response to Reply # 113

Stevie and Reeta were magic together. He really depended on her, though, and he took it hard when she left him alone and went to LA with Motown. Despite his ultra-positive public front, Stevie has a lot of darkness that engulfs him when nobody sees, so he really doesn't like to be alone. So when Syreeta wasn't there when he needed her, he felt she might as well left him for dead.

anyway, here's some explanation of "Superwoman" from Ribowsky's book:

***

That song wasn’t as crucifying, however, as the two-part, neurotically tempo-shifting “Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You),” a surprise public confessional (though few knew it) that his marriage was over. In an eight-minute argosy, the title becomes an ironic cudgel as he ridicules his woman—“Mary”—for cutting him out of her life while seeking stardom, taunting, “Does she really think that she will get by with a dream?” Accusingly, he noted that when summer was here “you were not around,” and when winter came “you went further south.” His conclusion: “Our love is at an end.”

This stuff was brutal, and it stunned friends of the couple, but as {Malcolm} Cecil says, “It was the reality. Stevie felt Syreeta had abandoned him when she didn’t come to New York.” Of course, Syreeta could have believed just the opposite, that Stevie could have adapted to L.A. but that she had no choice but to be there. In any event, when Syreeta heard the song, she got the message. The marriage, indeed, was over.

that's just...

Christ.

that experience had to be super painful for both of them.
stevie had to go through some things to write and perform that song.
and i feel his pain when i listen to it.

but can you imagine hearing that song for the first time
and realizing he was talking about you, and your marriage together?
and THAT'S the way you get the news that it's over?

that's a double "here, my dear" all wrapped up in 8 minutes.

thanks for sharing that with me man.
I gotta check that book out ASAP.

i guess i never processed that it's his darkest album, in a way.
(although that would explain why it's my favorite, next to innervisions...
i am always drawn more to stuff like "there's a riot going on" more than "stand!")

sunshine of my life is the sappy feelings of being on love,
but maybe your baby is the paranoia of him wondering what syretta is doing in LA,
you and i is about the dreams he had for them,
blame it on the sun is the acklowlwdgement that he could have handled it differently, but didn't.

Stevie hides a lot of emotion in his music, though... that's why I find his music to be so perpetually rewarding. It's not all on the surface, and while he's always smiling and talking about how beautiful life is, if you listen a few layers deeper, he's saying (and playing) some deep stuff.

Maybe your Baby is so dark and so sad that it has to be rooted in some type of truth and pain.

I'm feelin' down and some kind of lonely,
Cause' my baby done left me here,
Heart's blazing like a five alarm fire
And I don't even give a care

I feel like the world is turnin' on me,
My dreams turnin' to ashes right in front of my face,
And I'm gettin' kind of worried,
And I feel so out of place,

Maybe your baby done made some other plans,
Maybe your baby done made some other plans

. . I feel like cryin', yeh, yeh
Maybe baby, baby, baby, baby, baby

In the mornin' when I've got heartache,
I can't call up the doctor for help,
Cause' the only person that could ever do me any good,
Is steppin' out with my best friend

I feel like I'm slippin' deeper,
Slippin' deeper into myself,
And I can't take it,
This stuff is scarin' me to death

Maybe your baby done made some other plans,
Kinda makin' me worried,
Maybe your baby done made some other plans

Little Sally Walker, sittin' in a saucer,
Checkin' out the guys that are passing by

...by, by, by, by...

Maybe your baby done made some other plans

Maybe your baby done made some other plans,
Not includin' future plans,
Maybe your baby done made some other plans,
Maybe my baby done made some other plans,
Maybe my baby done made another plan
with another man.
Your baby, your baby, stupid baby, your baby,
That you put so trust so much trust in your baby,
Maybe your baby done made some other plans

And b.Touch was not playing about the portrayal about Tammi Terrell either... even with all the wild stuff I already knew about her, the stories about her in here still managed to shock me.

If a person ascends to the top 1% or better in ANY chosen field/profession, he/she is great / exceptional / savant / outlier / phenom, etc.

The Presidency of the United States is a pinnacle position. Chief CEO of the nation, Head of all armed forces, executive orders signature writer, silverback amongst poodles.

He and his wife went on a hunger strike. She asked him if she should continue even though she was on her death bed. He said yes... if she was down for the cause she wouldnt eat.... all the while unannounced to her, he had stopped the mutual hunger strike and was eating good. She starved to death and this nigga shrugged. He was racist too.

http://blogs.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/the-interviews-blog/gandhi-was-obsessed-with-sex-while-preaching-celibacy-to-others-kusoom-vadgama/

"You have reportedly opposed the statue because of Gandhi’s ‘debasement of women’ by his experiments with sexual self-control. Why have you come out so strongly now?
Men in position of power take advantage of their status. They have no qualms about abusing minors or women. All his life Gandhi was obsessed with sex –while preaching celibacy to others. No one challenged him. He was the nation’s ‘untouchable’ hero, his iconic status eclipsed all his wrong doings. The protest against yet another statue of his in London, just two miles from the one in Tavistock Square, is a perfect opportunity to speak the truth about this other people’s Mahatma.
What most angers you most about this known truth?
Gandhi never made a secret of sleeping naked with is great-grand daughter and the wife of his great-grand son. It may have been his way of testing his control over his sexual drive, but these women were used as guinea pigs. If he had used other adult women, it would have been nothing more than interesting gossip. But Gandhi chose a teenage blood relation and a great-grand-daughter-in-law for his sexual whims. It is as unforgivable as it is unbelievable. I do not belong to the brigade that admires the Emperor’s new clothes, and have no fear or hesitation in telling the truth about him. Ironically, it was he who instilled in me the mantra of ‘satyameva jay ate’."

http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/ghandi-slept-grandniece-historian-tells-uk-government-1460499

"Gandhi was obsessed with sex and it has all been hush-hushed for all these years. He had a habit of sleeping naked with women, including his great niece and other married women, to see if he could control himself. I find it absolutely disgusting that he used women for his own experiments."

At the age of 38, in 1906, Gandhi took a vow of brahmacharya: living a spiritual life which included a vow of chastity. He encouraged his followers to abstain from sex, even in marriage.

To prove his self-control he often slept and bathed naked with other women – including a grandniece and the wife of his grandnephew, who were both 18 when they started sleeping in the same bed as Gandhi, who was 77 years old at the time.

Gandhi's behaviour was widely discussed and criticised by family members and leading politicians.

Some members of his staff resigned, including two editors of his newspaper who left after refusing to print parts of Gandhi's sermons describing his sleeping arrangements.

The first Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru is said to have described Gandhi's sexual behaviour as "abnormal and unnatural".

"

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/features/thrill-of-the-chaste-the-truth-about-gandhis-sex-life-1937411.html

"Meanwhile, Gandhi was challenging that abstinence in his own way. He set up ashrams in which he began his first "experiments" with sex; boys and girls were to bathe and sleep together, chastely, but were punished for any sexual talk. Men and women were segregated, and Gandhi's advice was that husbands should not be alone with their wives, and, when they felt passion, should take a cold bath.

The rules did not, however, apply to him. Sushila Nayar, the attractive sister of Gandhi's secretary, also his personal physician, attended Gandhi from girlhood. She used to sleep and bathe with Gandhi. When challenged, he explained how he ensured decency was not offended. "While she is bathing I keep my eyes tightly shut," he said, "I do not know ... whether she bathes naked or with her underwear on. I can tell from the sound that she uses soap." The provision of such personal services to Gandhi was a much sought-after sign of his favour and aroused jealousy among the ashram inmates.

As he grew older (and following Kasturba's death) he was to have more women around him and would oblige women to sleep with him whom – according to his segregated ashram rules – were forbidden to sleep with their own husbands. Gandhi would have women in his bed, engaging in his "experiments" which seem to have been, from a reading of his letters, an exercise in strip-tease or other non-contact sexual activity. Much explicit material has been destroyed but tantalising remarks in Gandhi's letters remain such as: "Vina's sleeping with me might be called an accident. All that can be said is that she slept close to me." One might assume, then, that getting into the spirit of the Gandhian experiment meant something more than just sleeping close to him.

It can't, one imagines, can have helped with the "involuntary discharges" which Gandhi complained of experiencing more frequently since his return to India. He had an almost magical belief in the power of semen: "One who conserves his vital fluid acquires unfailing power," he said.

Meanwhile, it seemed that challenging times required greater efforts of spiritual fortitude, and for that, more attractive women were required: Sushila, who in 1947 was 33, was now due to be supplanted in the bed of the 77-year-old Gandhi by a woman almost half her age. While in Bengal to see what comfort he could offer in times of inter-communal violence in the run-up to independence, Gandhi called for his 18-year-old grandniece Manu to join him – and sleep with him. "We both may be killed by the Muslims," he told her, "and must put our purity to the ultimate test, so that we know that we are offering the purest of sacrifices, and we should now both start sleeping naked."

Such behaviour was no part of the accepted practice of bramacharya. He, by now, described his reinvented concept of a brahmachari as: "One who never has any lustful intention, who, by constant attendance upon God, has become proof against conscious or unconscious emissions, who is capable of lying naked with naked women, however beautiful, without being in any manner whatsoever sexually excited ... who is making daily and steady progress towards God and whose every act is done in pursuance of that end and no other." That is, he could do whatever he wished, so long as there was no apparent "lustful intention". He had effectively redefined the concept of chastity to fit his personal practices."

George W. Bush isn't a monster.

Cornell West is cool.

We can both name at least 200 great men that aren't monsters.

but everybody, myself included, read this post
and tried to think of famous people that were great
instead of looking at people in their own lives.

that's why I asked "who would jesus be without a biographer?"
my point was, without ppl writing about him,
jesus would be an insane, homeless, radical rabbi.
and many ppl that are believers would not have even heard of him.

by that logic, there could be great men reading this post
that have no biographers. does that mean they ain't great?

it shouldn't.

that's the point.

and neither am I.

the idea that you would focus on the 'great' and not the 'monster' is what this is about.

just as proudly as you and the other guy are raising your hands to identify as 'great', you must understand that it all comes with a little monster.

get it?

the 'story' is done.

that means. no people who are alive should be considered 'great', there's still time to 'expose the monster'.

158. "Louis CK, please report to the front desk for check in"
In response to Reply # 0

At the Aspen Comedy Festival a few years ago, he invited a female comedy duo back to his hotel room. The two ladies gladly joined him, and offered him some weed. He turned it down, but asked if it would be OK if he took his dick out.

Thinking he was joking (that’s exactly the kind of thing this guy would say), the women gave a facetious thumbs up. He wasn’t joking. When he actually started jerking off in front of them, the ladies decided that wasn’t their bag and made for the exit. But the comedian stood in front of the door, blocking their way with his body, until he was done.

The item, which we couldn’t pin down at the time, was, as several commenters noted, a now well-circulated rumor about C.K.—although, in a confusing development, the comedian Doug Stanhope, a friend of Louis C.K., took to Facebook and claimed to be the culprit. (Several of Stanhope’s Facebook commenters replied that they thought it was about C.K.)

One of the commenters on our post affirmed that the whispers of C.K. taking his dick out whenever he pleases are well-known within the comedy world:

I have it on good authority (friends in the biz) that it’s Louis CK. I’ve heard stories about his propensity for whipping it out and jerking off in front of women at inappropriate times (i.e. dinner table, bar, etc.).
