it's doing something arduous and

like when they're listening to the record an artist handed in or whatever...dont they basically perform the songs to board rooms? 'least that's how i thought it went down. he's just doing what he would do on stage. would be weird if he was just sitting there listening to it with them.

you're trying to sell yourself to a bunch of assholes who are going to have to spend cash/actually give a fuck who you are or else you end up in the major label graveyard where too many dope artists reside.

GA-RUN-TEE there's been artists who've done MUCH worse trying to win record label exec's over. There's been so many infamous stories outside of rap; rock etc...of the shenanigans they pull trying to get signed and impress motherfuckers.

- "ignorant" kid gets famous off of Vine

- signed arguably because he dances, not for his musical talent

- leaked video after his buzz has probably maxed out, with him doing even more animated dancing to prove his worth to fitewolks

it's part of being in the music industry. if he was playing acoustic guitar and singing would it still be cooning? this is what he does. he raps and dances.

I mean, there's a story of L.A. Reid having Usher perform for the label, and he brought all of the women that worked there into the board room to watch him.

Still..........

I couldn't watch that.

which is pretty normal

for me it was more about looking at their reactions

you could tell most were silently judging him

for me it was a visual of how much the major labels no longer care about the actual music

it's not so much the way he's behaving, nothing wrong with that.
it's that the people around him clearly had no actual enthusiasm/interest in him as a performer/artist.
(not entirely accurate, since he got signed...but you can tell they didn't FEEL him)
it makes the whole thing just look embarrassing for everyone involved.

he is just a commodity to them and very happy to be one.

Am I too black? Am I not black enough? Am I being too black around white people? Am I not being black enough around white people? Are these white people viewing my blackness as a novelty? Am I embracing these white people viewing my blackness as a novelty because I'm getting paid for it? Does that make me less black? Am I a sellout?

All of these questions would make it hard as fuck to get out of bed day in and day out, and that's without consideration of systemic racism, police brutality, pay gaps, and the myriad of other concerns.

i still blame hip-hop.

deals with these questions. most black people could give a shit less about how their 'blackness' may or may not offend others. that makes a lot of blacks within that

If they can't claim it, it's deemed evil or the blame for ills of the world until they CAN claim it
(refer to the White Citizens Council's warning to stay away from rock music and your own sig, even).

gets very similar treatment.

and the people in the room have about the same level of bored dismissiveness.

from my knowledge of the entertainment business (and by that i mean watching entourage) i imagine just about all of them have work they'd rather be doing, but have to be in that room to put on a show for the flavor of the day client signing.

i'm not saying the people in that room aren't racist exploitationists, but i don't think this video alone is very good evidence of that.

the crack epidemic didn't affect the white community, by and large,
so a white starlet singing about crack selling (fictional or otherwise) doesn't hit home in the same ways.

so you agree - we'd view a similarly-situated white pop act (one who rose to stardom via Vine while displaying questionable talent and is clearly to be marketed as a flash-in-the-pan to take advantage of a current fad in popular music) differently b/c of what we bring w/us to the viewing (knowledge about the happenings in our community and hand-wringing about entertainment's impact on it).

to where at least some substantial segment of "the black community" finds that Bobby Shmurda (and most black entertainers at large) trade on "the black experience" and take advantage of (if not exploit) that experience, and in doing so obligate themselves to a certain standard for that experience?

Is that too simplistic?

I'm asking all this stuff in earnest, I find the differences in the pressures black entertainers face from white people/black people confusing and fascinating.

i still blame hip-hop.

based on popular culture/radio, the vast majority of black people DON'T seem to care about this. but your larger point stands, yeah.

if black people as a whole cared about holding the radio accountable for its depiction of the black experience, pop music wouldn't be what it is today.
but that's another post for another bitter old man.

2) How much control does he have when he is very vocal about white elites keeping him out of spaces he wishes to be a participant in??

3) Did Kanye dance & rap on a table in front of whites & was he called a coon for it?...This was years ago so my recollection could be off.

you cant wear a doorag to work, get reprimanded and blame it on respectability politics. there's a way we have to conduct ourselves to get ahead in this society, but I digress

as for Kanye, his dancing on tables was a part of his "passionate" character. there's a difference between that and an Amos & Andy routine

but he was also rapping lyrics to "I am a God" and "New Slaves"

lil different but it's not that serious.

All these rappers have to "perform" for execs and if the music is shitty (to us) we will scream coon train.

Take Stalley for example, I havent heard a song of his that's blown me away. he could get on a conference table doing his thing and it wouldnt be near cooning

it's very much a kid (him being dark doesnt help matters) dancing for white people's affection that people find troubling, if you dont get it then so be it

It's typical to do performances.. all the time..

Label

Print

MTV

Your often in an office "selling your wares"

If he was selling a fucking "foreman grill" he'd be doing the same thing. If he had a guitar and talent you wouldn't be saying this.. That said... someone needs to get a hold of this kid and give him a safer hit or drop him

I hate playing his record out btw... such a cringeworthy tune for multicultural hip hop crowds..

I was at mostly older Black and Latino spot a while ago in Hollywood and "it fit", but I could def see that record being mad awkward in a multirace (read mostly white crowd)

by the way where do you spin in LA bro (and what do you spin)

Lock & Key.. The Virgil.. No Vacancy.. smaller shit that turns up llke the bigger clubs but more bar-ish.. cooler college vibes I guess

it is mad awkward to play any record that says nigga that much amongst any majority non black crowd.

The other werid thing is .. its not like a "hit song" with memorable parts.. people basically awkwardly dance until the "lopped vine" drops then they go crazy then they are done..

I might make a like 1.5 min version of it.. starting closer to that part

Funny my cousin managed an artist that he got signed to you guessed it Epic records back in the late 90s. He told me about how much he got into the performance in this conference room and hopped on the table. He got signed but got dropped before he ever put out an album. Wonder if there's any correlation...

the whole setup is too bizarre.
i am sure they did not set out to do a step and fetch routine.
but i'll be damned if that did not come off coony.

if he threw a watermelon slice in the air and caught it with his mouth, it would flow with the energy in that room.

at least hand him a mic and let him pretend he's doing something.
eff it, hand him a hair brush or a bottle of water. anything to make it real.

p.s. the boardroom looks a little low budget too.

Something about a black man embarrassing themselves infront of whites makes us feel some type of way. If we changed up any of the variables, we wouldn't care. If it was a Hispanic rapper, so what. If the group of people were black, we wouldn't care.

Why cant we shrug our shoulders to this?

1) it will be interesting to see if this video ever finds it's way to WSHH as some of the people who decide what gets posted on WSHH and what doesn't are in that room.

2) i highly suspect this video's original upload will be pulled with-in the next 72 hours.

3) bobby schmurda won't be signed to epic as soon as 2016.

Like he was somehow thinking that if he just put effort into lip syncing that he could somehow connect his "star power" over his murder "kill-a-nigga" raps

People gotta realize when Kanye did that shit... he had JESUS WALKS!!

i would have advised him to perform a song OTHER than "hot nigga".

between the lip-syncing/dancing/performing of his one hit that was popular LAST QUARTER - i would hope that some of the people in that room were smart enough to have buyers remorse.

congratulations, you just signed an act that doesn't have half the following/material/cachet of chief keef (who was a major label failure and was dropped from his deal the very day this video was uploaded).

they're already looking at him like a one hit wonder.

the fact the other song he performed wasn't even his song is just pathetic.

i wonder if his "deal" is only for a 14 day pay period or something.

Souljah boy had one record when he did his deal as well... yes it was WAY more accessible (also arguably way more subversive) as pop songs go.. but it was one..

He was able to get in there and make souljah girl for radio and donk for the hood...

Shmurda''s success is gonna be based on whether Sha money can find a hit to plug verses in...

Would be crazy if they got Meghan trainor to give him one.. (she isnt ruining her rep like that tho)

Soujah signed to certified hit makers when he did his deal... mr collipark.. 3h (a&r) was coming off daddy yankee.. and polow da don gave him one...

thats the kinda help he needs

im not saying bobby shmurda cant find a way to survive
but i don't see him being everywhere like he is right now for long
and i actually like hot nigga
rowdy rebel might be the one to save them
but i dont see bobby shmurda doing superman numbers
hes already complaining about money his second single bobby bitch
isnt catching
at most he will go the way of uncle murda
signed yet relegated to putting out mixtapes.
soulja boy had like 3 songs popping without a label
before super man hit.
i wouldnt compare the two
both youtube sensations but one went viral off one vid
while another had built up an audience for a few years then
blew up.

121. "The response really speaks to the state of mainstream rap music..."
In response to Reply # 0

Some of us hate ALL this mainstream stuff they push and market to our children,
but there are those of us who think it's ok as long as it's not in front of nicely dresssed
white folks.

Either it's some bullshit or it's not.

If you're accepting of it, at all, then be fully accepting of it. If it's bullshit in front of white folks,
then it's bullshit all the time, no?
For instance, I say things about how white supremacy functions as system in america,
and alotta folks don't want me to say this in front of white people, because it makes them
uncomfortable. But to hell with that, because it's the truth. It's something I believe in,
and facts that I stand on.

However, you look at the themes in this music, and ask yourself if these are themes
that you wish to stand by. Should we be standing by the will to talk about destroying
ourselves, our communities, devaluing ourselves and our women, etc?
THIS is why it's considered cooning, and it's cooning whether he does it for us or for white folks.
The real problem is that some of yall are fine with this in any space at all.
And miss me with that "it's fiction" crap, because like I always say, too many kids are
living by and emulating these words to rely on that cop-out. Throughout that lil period
where Chiraq was all in the news, the main theme running through the music was that
they're REAL and don't just rap about it... and that "realness" has been a thing is rap
for some time now, since the late 80s, even.

but

a.) i cant understand that nigga

b.) i think he's garbage

c.) the beat, the dance, and "about a week ago" are the only likable things about it

but with all that being said...the visual in the OP is jarring...it shouldn't be but it is...u don't get more awkward than all of that

I don't want that shit played in front young black kids because its a bad influence and nothing good can really come of it

I don't want it played in front of white ppl because it puts our ignorance on full display and I don't want our dirty laundry dissected by the man.

I kinda equate it to the whole n-word issue. me personally, I say nigga sometimes. but I don't say it in front of white folks, because its something that I use around my ppl and not even all of black people, just those im comfortable with. is using "nigga" around blacks controversial and questionable? certainly...but using it around whites raises a whole different set of issues and questions.

and shame some of us carry around

and how much we really want the rest of nigga town to carry it around the same way we do

this is one of those times where being aware of shit only further restricts us...

we want certain things to be weeded out the culture...and maybe some of it should be...

it's like a small group of "enlightened" niggas and sympathetic others with too little cultural or capital influence stuck between racist/apathetic others and "uncooperative" niggas

some of us blame yt for both (their racist, privileged, or apathetic selves and for crippling the uncooperative blacks systemically)

some of us blame us for not policing our own culture is if that's enough to change that other piece of bread in this shitty sandwich

all this shit is crazy

I agree with him.

Beyond that..... I have no comment (for now lol)

Seriously, though.... There's only 4 tracks I listen to with any consistency, though that is not to take anything away from the rest of it. It's a really good album but my mind is not blown.

But if nothing else, I appreciate that a work of such ambition exists in the current cynical, facile music climate.
