"Jian Ghomeshi fired from CBC (update: drops lawsuit, charged with rape)"

(mod edit on title 11/26)

This news story may not make much waves in the US, but it's pretty fascinating.

After reading Jian's statement (which I'll post in a reply), I think the CBC may catch an L here.

Jian Ghomeshi, host of Q, no longer with CBC

http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/jian-ghomeshi-host-of-q-no-longer-with-cbc-1.2813670

CBC's relationship with Jian Ghomeshi, host of the cultural affairs radio show Q, has ended, the network announced Sunday.

"The CBC is saddened to announce its relationship with Jian Ghomeshi has come to an end. This decision was not made without serious deliberation and careful consideration. Jian has made an immense contribution to the CBC and we wish him well," the network said in a statement.

CBC ended its ties with Ghomeshi earlier on Sunday, said spokesman Chuck Thompson.

"Information came to our attention recently that in CBC's judgment precludes us from continuing our relationship with Jian," Thompson told CBC News.

Thompson would not elaborate on how recently the CBC had discovered the information or what that information was.

"Whenever a decision is made to end a relationship with an employee, terms of separation are never disclosed," Thompson said.

On Friday, Ghomeshi announced that he was taking some "much needed personal time" away from the CBC.

"Thanks for all the well wishes, you guys," he tweeted Friday. "I'm OK."

Dentons Canada LLP, a law firm in Toronto, released a statement saying that Ghomeshi has instructed them to file a $50-million lawsuit against the CBC on Monday that "will claim general and punitive damages for among other things, breach of confidence and bad faith."

It added that he will also "commence a grievance for reinstatement under the CBC’s collective agreement."

Asked about the possible lawsuit, Thompson said, "If we are served, as the public broadcaster, we will contest this vigorously."

The Giller Prize tweeted: "We can confirm Jian Ghomeshi will not host the #GillerPrize gala on November 10th. More news will be forthcoming as it becomes available."

Co-created hit show

On Thursday's show, Ghomeshi presented an essay about Wednesday's shooting in Ottawa. He was not on the air for Friday's program, which was hosted by Piya Chattopadhyay.

Q — which Ghomeshi co-created — is a daily national talk show on CBC Radio One and CBC-TV featuring interviews with celebrities and prominent international figures.

One of Ghomeshi's most high-profile interviews was in 2009 with actor-musician Billy Bob Thornton, who wanted to talk about his musical endeavours and became gruff after the host asked him about his film career.

The cultural affairs program, which launched in 2007, is now broadcast on over 180 NPR/PRI stations and syndicated in the U.S.

The Toronto-based Ghomeshi, 47, is also a published author, with the 2012 memoir 1982 and articles in various papers. He also hosted the CBC-TV program Play.

Ghomeshi, who was born in London and is of Iranian descent, first achieved notoriety as a musician with the folk-rock group Moxy Fruvous. Through Jian Ghomeshi Productions, he manages Juno-winning alt-pop musician Lights.

Ghomeshi has won several awards for his broadcasting and was named Best Media Personality in TV or radio by NOW Magazine in 2013.

Dear everyone,

I am writing today because I want you to be the first to know some news.

This has been the hardest time of my life. I am reeling from the loss of my father. I am in deep personal pain and worried about my mom. And now my world has been rocked by so much more.

Today, I was fired from the CBC.

For almost 8 years I have been the host of a show I co-created on CBC called Q. It has been my pride and joy. My fantastic team on Q are super-talented and have helped build something beautiful.

I have always operated on the principle of doing my best to maintain a dignity and a commitment to openness and truth, both on and off the air. I have conducted major interviews, supported Canadian talent, and spoken out loudly in my audio essays about ideas, issues, and my love for this country. All of that is available for anyone to hear or watch. I have known, of course, that not everyone always agrees with my opinions or my style, but I've never been anything but honest. I have doggedly defended the CBC and embraced public broadcasting. This is a brand I’ve been honoured to help grow.

All this has now changed.

Today I was fired from the company where I've been working for almost 14 years – stripped from my show, barred from the building and separated from my colleagues. I was given the choice to walk away quietly and to publicly suggest that this was my decision. But I am not going to do that. Because that would be untrue. Because I’ve been fired. And because I've done nothing wrong.

I’ve been fired from the CBC because of the risk of my private sex life being made public as a result of a campaign of false allegations pursued by a jilted ex girlfriend and a freelance writer.

As friends and family of mine, you are owed the truth.

I have commenced legal proceedings against the CBC, what’s important to me is that you know what happened and why.

Forgive me if what follows may be shocking to some.

I have always been interested in a variety of activities in the bedroom but I only participate in sexual practices that are mutually agreed upon, consensual, and exciting for both partners.

About two years ago I started seeing a woman in her late 20s. Our relationship was affectionate, casual and passionate. We saw each other on and off over the period of a year and began engaging in adventurous forms of sex that included role-play, dominance and submission. We discussed our interests at length before engaging in rough sex (forms of BDSM). We talked about using safe words and regularly checked in with each other about our comfort levels. She encouraged our role-play and often was the initiator. We joked about our relations being like a mild form of Fifty Shades of Grey or a story from Lynn Coady's Giller-Prize winning book last year. I don’t wish to get into any more detail because it is truly not anyone's business what two consenting adults do. I have never discussed my private life before. Sexual preferences are a human right.

Despite a strong connection between us it became clear to me that our on-and-off dating was unlikely to grow into a larger relationship and I ended things in the beginning of this year. She was upset by this and sent me messages indicating her disappointment that I would not commit to more, and her anger that I was seeing others.

After this, in the early spring there began a campaign of harassment, vengeance and demonization against me that would lead to months of anxiety.

It came to light that a woman had begun anonymously reaching out to people that I had dated (via Facebook) to tell them she had been a victim of abusive relations with me. In other words, someone was reframing what had been an ongoing consensual relationship as something nefarious. I learned – through one of my friends who got in contact with this person – that someone had rifled through my phone on one occasion and taken down the names of any woman I had seemed to have been dating in recent years. This person had begun methodically contacting them to try to build a story against me. Increasingly, female friends and ex-girlfriends of mine told me about these attempts to smear me.

Someone also began colluding with a freelance writer who was known not to be a fan of mine and, together, they set out to try to find corroborators to build a case to defame me. She found some sympathetic ears by painting herself as a victim and turned this into a campaign. The writer boldly started contacting my friends, acquaintances and even work colleagues – all of whom came to me to tell me this was happening and all of whom recognized it as a trumped up way to attack me and undermine my reputation. Everyone contacted would ask the same question, if I had engaged in non-consensual behavior why was the place to address this the media?

The writer tried to peddle the story and, at one point, a major Canadian media publication did due diligence but never printed a story. One assumes they recognized these attempts to recast my sexual behaviour were fabrications. Still, the spectre of mud being flung onto the Internet where online outrage can demonize someone before facts can refute false allegations has been what I've had to live with.

And this leads us to today and this moment. I’ve lived with the threat that this stuff would be thrown out there to defame me. And I would sue. But it would do the reputational damage to me it was intended to do (the ex has even tried to contact me to say that she now wishes to refute any of these categorically untrue allegations). But with me bringing it to light, in the coming days you will prospectively hear about how I engage in all kinds of unsavoury aggressive acts in the bedroom. And the implication may be made that this happens non-consensually. And that will be a lie. But it will be salacious gossip in a world driven by a hunger for "scandal". And there will be those who choose to believe it and to hate me or to laugh at me. And there will be an attempt to pile on. And there will be the claim that there are a few women involved (those who colluded with my ex) in an attempt to show a "pattern of behaviour". And it will be based in lies but damage will be done. But I am telling you this story in the hopes that the truth will, finally, conquer all.

I have been open with the CBC about this since these categorically untrue allegations ramped up. I have never believed it was anyone's business what I do in my private affairs but I wanted my bosses to be aware that this attempt to smear me was out there. CBC has been part of the team of friends and lawyers assembled to deal with this for months. On Thursday I voluntarily showed evidence that everything I have done has been consensual. I did this in good faith and because I know, as I have always known, that I have nothing to hide. This when the CBC decided to fire me.

CBC execs confirmed that the information provided showed that there was consent. In fact, they later said to me and my team that there is no question in their minds that there has always been consent. They said they’re not concerned about the legal side. But then they said that this type of sexual behavior was unbecoming of a prominent host on the CBC. They said that I was being dismissed for "the risk of the perception that may come from a story that could come out." To recap, I am being fired in my prime from the show I love and built and threw myself into for years because of what I do in my private life.

Let me be the first to say that my tastes in the bedroom may not be palatable to some folks. They may be strange, enticing, weird, normal, or outright offensive to others. We all have our secret life. But that is my private life. That is my personal life. And no one, and certainly no employer, should have dominion over what people do consensually in their private life.

And so, with no formal allegations, no formal complaints, no complaints, not one, to the HR department at the CBC (they told us they’d done a thorough check and were satisfied), and no charges, I have lost my job based on a campaign of vengeance. Two weeks after the death of my beautiful father I have been fired from the CBC because of what I do in my private life.

I have loved the CBC. The Q team are the best group of people in the land. My colleagues and producers and on-air talent at the CBC are unparalleled in being some of the best in the business. I have always tried to be a good soldier and do a good job for my country. I am still in shock. But I am telling this story to you so the truth is heard. And to bring an end to the nightmare.

This is disgusting. I don't even like dude but this is unacceptable.

And this woman should be publically shamed for what she's doing. She's the one who deserves a ruined reputation, not him.

I'm at work today (media) and there's ALOT of sympathy for him. I think he was smart to allude to 'Shades of Grey'. He's extremely popular in Canada....I'd say especially amongst women. He's a lefty.....feminist-friendly.....I think this might be a somewhat rare case where most women generally sympathize with him. As long as there's nothing else to the story.

Could be that the CBC have already painted themselves in a corner on this in terms of public relations.

They're kinda like our version of the BBC. They have a couple tv stations and radio stations. Think PBS.......but ALOT bigger and striking a balance between being profit-oriented and showcasing homegrown arts/culture/news. They're the mainstream national news source for the left of center in Canada.

Jian actually took private videos to the CBC. It was a pre-emptive strike. He knew the accusations were coming...so he showed his boss'es videos that proved they were engaged in the acts consensually. After they saw them....they axed him.

Can't imagine how awkward it would be to bring your personal sex vids to your boss for their viewing.

Of course there's more to the story than Jian's statement. Maybe not an L for the CBC?

Kevin Donovan was one the main investigators in the Rob Ford mess.

http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2014/10/26/cbc_fires_jian_ghomeshi_over_sex_allegations.html

CBC star Jian Ghomeshi has been fired over “information” the public broadcaster recently received that it says “precludes” it from continuing to employ the 47-year-old host of the popular Q radio show.
Shortly after CBC announced Ghomeshi was out the door on Sunday, Ghomeshi released news that he was launching a $50-million lawsuit claiming “breach of confidence and bad faith” by his employer of almost 14 years. He later followed that up with a Facebook posting saying he has been the target of “harassment, vengeance and demonization.”

Why the Star chose to publish ‘explosive’ allegations
Fired radio host earned loyal following with interview show

Over the past few months the Star has approached Ghomeshi with allegations from three young women, all about 20 years his junior, who say he was physically violent to them without their consent during sexual encounters or in the lead-up to sexual encounters. Ghomeshi, through his lawyer, has said he “does not engage in non-consensual role play or sex and any suggestion of the contrary is defamatory.”
In his Facebook posting Sunday evening, Ghomeshi wrote in an emotional statement that he has “done nothing wrong.” He said it is not unusual for him to engage in “adventurous forms of sex that included role-play, dominance and submission.” However, he said it has always been consensual.

Ghomeshi’s statement said that he has been open with the CBC about the allegations. He said the CBC’s decision to fire him came after he voluntarily showed evidence late last week that everything he has done was consensual. Ghomeshi blames a woman he describes as an ex-girlfriend for spreading lies about him and orchestrating a campaign with other women to “smear” him.
The three women interviewed by the Star allege that Ghomeshi physically attacked them on dates without consent. They allege he struck them with a closed fist or open hand; bit them; choked them until they almost passed out; covered their nose and mouth so that they had difficulty breathing; and that they were verbally abused during and after sex.

A fourth woman, who worked at CBC, said Ghomeshi told her at work: “I want to hate f--- you.”

“I have always been interested in a variety of activities in the bedroom but I only participate in sexual practices that are mutually agreed upon, consensual, and exciting for both partners,” Ghomeshi said in his posting.

“Let me be the first to say that my tastes in the bedroom may not be palatable to some folks. They may be strange, enticing, weird, normal, or outright offensive to others. … But that is my private life. … And no one, and certainly no employer, should have dominion over what people do consensually in their private life.
In September, Ghomeshi told the Star that he did not understand why the newspaper was continuing to pursue allegations when “my lawyers have already told you it is untrue.” Over dinner at a chance meeting at a public event, Ghomeshi said he is a “good person” and described many of his recent successes, including an interview with Barbra Streisand. He said he could not answer any of the Star’s questions about his alleged abusive conduct.

Early last summer, the Star began looking into allegations by young women of sexual abuse by Ghomeshi over the past two years. The Star conducted detailed interviews of the women, talking each woman several times. None of the women filed police complaints and none agreed to go on the record. The reasons given for not coming forward publicly include the fear that they would be sued or would be the object of Internet retaliation. (A woman who wrote an account of an encounter with a Canadian radio host believed to be Ghomeshi was subjected to vicious Internet attacks by online readers who said they were supporters of the host.)

Ghomeshi is the co-creator of Q, one of the most successful shows in CBC history. It is the corporation’s flagship radio show in Canada and is syndicated to 180 radio stations in the U.S. In his Facebook posting, Ghomeshi paid homage to his “fantastic team,” a group of “super-talented” journalists whom he works with to produce the show five days a week.

That all ended over the weekend, Ghomeshi said. On Friday came the news that he had been put on indeterminate leave by the CBC to deal with “personal issues.”Then on Sunday, two bomb shells.
First, CBC issued a statement shortly after noon saying Ghomeshi was gone. “Information came to (CBC’s) attention recently that in CBC’s judgment precludes us from continuing our relationship with Jian Ghomeshi,” CBC spokesman Chuck Thompson said in an interview.
Ghomeshi said in his Facebook posting that his CBC bosses gave him a choice to “walk away quietly” or to be fired. He chose not to walk away and “publicly suggest that this was my decision.” And so, Ghomeshi said, he was “stripped from my show, barred from the building and separated from my colleagues.”

Two hours later, his lawyers announced that Monday morning, when courts open, Ghomeshi would be filing a $50-million lawsuit against the CBC, a corporation he later said on Facebook he has “doggedly defended” for years.

His law firm, Dentons LLP, stated the lawsuit will claim general and punitive damages for breach of confidence and bad faith. The firm’s statement also noted Ghomeshi will “commence a grievance for reinstatement under his collective agreement.”
Sources say top CBC brass spent the weekend in closed-door meetings at their Front St. head office. Ghomeshi is a huge part of the CBC brand, and a fear that the brand would be tarnished is causing the CBC to try to “get out ahead of the story” by taking action before damaging reports in the media surfaced, sources say.
In his Facebook posting Sunday, Ghomeshi blames an ex girlfriend — whom he does not name — for spreading lies after he broke off the relationship early this year. He said he and the woman “began engaging in adventurous forms of sex that included role-play, dominance and submission.” They used “safe words” and “regularly checked in with each other about our comfort levels,” he said.

Ghomeshi also said he and the women jokingly talked about how their relationship was a mild form of Fifty Shades of Grey or a story from Lynn Coady’s Giller Prize-winning book.

The Star had several detailed interviews with each of the three women, who said they experienced violence from Ghomeshi without consent, and with the former CBC employee, who complained of verbal and physical harassment in the workplace.

The women now accusing Jian Ghomeshi of violence began as his fans. Two had very similar early experiences with him. After Ghomeshi met them at public events, which he had promoted on CBC Radio, he contacted them through Facebook and asked them on dates. They eagerly accepted.

Each woman said she remembers Ghomeshi being initially sweet and flattering, then later suggesting or hinting at violent sex acts. When they failed to respond or expressed displeasure, they recalled Ghomeshi dismissing his remarks as “just fantasies,” reassuring them he wouldn’t ask them to do anything they weren’t comfortable with. The women deny that “safe words” were employed in the relationship.
In one woman’s case, she visited Ghomeshi at his Toronto home and alleges as soon as she walked into his house he suddenly struck her hard with his open hand, then continued to hit her and choked her. The woman alleges Ghomeshi repeatedly beat her about the head and choked her.

The Star’s interviews of the women were lengthy. The women, all educated and employed, said Ghomeshi’s actions shocked them.
Another woman, who described a similar alleged attack, said that in the lead-up to their date Ghomeshi “warned me he would be aggressive.”
“I thought this meant he would want to pull my hair and have rough sex. He reassured me that I wouldn’t be forced. (Later) he attacked me. Choked me. Hit me like I didn’t know men hit women. I submitted.”
None of the women has contacted police. When asked why by the Star, the women cited several reasons including fears that a police report would expose their names and worries that their consent or acceptance of fantasy role-play discussions in text or other messages with Ghomeshi would be used against them as evidence of consent to actual violence.

Only one of the alleged victims worked at the CBC. She never dated Ghomeshi. She alleges he approached her from behind and cupped her rear end in the Q studio, and that he quietly told her at a story meeting that he wanted to “hate f---” her.
The woman said she complained about Ghomeshi’s behaviour to her union representative, who took the complaint to a Q producer. As the woman recalls, the producer asked her “what she could do to make this a less toxic workplace” for herself. No further action was taken by the CBC, and the woman left the broadcaster shortly thereafter.

The Star presented allegations gleaned from its interviews to the CBC. Spokesman Chuck Thompson said he could not respond to any of the allegations, citing both privacy rules related to the employer-employee relationship and Ghomeshi’s intention to file a lawsuit.
Each of the women accusing Ghomeshi cite the case of Carla Ciccone as a reason why they desire anonymity. Last year Ciccone wrote an article for the website XOJane about a “bad date” with an unidentified, very popular Canadian radio host whom readers speculated to be Ghomeshi.
In the days that followed, Ciccone received hundreds of abusive messages and threats. An online video calling her a “scumbag of the Internet” has been viewed over 397,000 times. Ciccone’s claims about the behaviour during her “bad date” were far less severe than the allegations of abuse from the women now accusing Ghomeshi, who fear the online backlash could be significantly worse for them if their names were made public.

After the Star initially sought comment from Ghomeshi in the summer (after interviewing the women), Ghomeshi’s lawyer, Neil Rabinovitch, wrote to the Star saying that he had reviewed “emails and text messages” between Ghomeshi and the women Rabinovitch believed were the Star’s sources. The lawyer said in a letter he believed this information would “discredit the individuals we believe to be your sources.”

Rabinovitch said he was unable to disclose the emails and text messages because it “violates the privacy of all involved.”
Ghomeshi is using the same law firm and has also hired crisis communication consultants Navigator.

In his Facebook posting, Ghomeshi stated there have been no complaints about him to the CBC human resources department, nor have there been any “formal allegations” or “formal complaints” about his behaviour.

This certainly changes things. 4 women all together? And it doesn't sound 'consensual'. It sounds like he's a sleazeball that walks the line.....tells them just enough to put them in the very uncomfortable situation of not knowing what to do when he becomes a dom.

Fact is....you have to be COMPLETELY clear about EVERYTHING when you want to mess around with this stuff. It's not enough to say 'I have BDSM fantasies' in a flippant way....and then start punching the shit out of them as soon as they get in the door. I'm sure the BDSM world has a name for this. 'Selective disclosure' or something like that? Again, this stuff only absolves itself from the ethical and moral implications when the two parties very clearly plan and discuss everything they want to do.

This could be a wrap for him. And that facebook post he made is sooooo nauseating if this side of the story emerges as the truth. What's described here is NOT BDSM. That's sexual assault done in an extremely manipulative way. I just recently dipped my toe in this world....the communication has to be painstakingly thorough.

The 'evidence' that the CBC is talking about is videos that Gian voluntarily showed them of his sex acts. Obviously, just because he can show them videos of consensual BDSM play....does not mean he hasn't also assaulted someone non-consensually.

nor am i defending the actions described in the article...

but this seems very flimsy.

"we talked to people who said he hit them!

...but we can't name their names or offer any proof."

i mean no complaints, no criminal charges, nothing really to substantiate any of the allegations except this article and that's the means used to terminate him?

i dunno, seems hasty.

maybe more will be exposed to justify the response - but as it stands, i think a good lawyer would tear this shit to shreds in a civil suit.

<-- never forget the 2000's.

He wasn't terminated because of the allegations. He brought video tapes of his sexcapades to his bosses because he knew the allegations were gonna come out. The videos he showed them depict him partaking in BDSM sex acts but clearly show that they were consensual.

When the CBC people watched the videos...they decided to terminate him. Which complicates the matter....because the actual reason they terminated him DOES seem questionable. Though it's looking like the right decision...even if it was made with a faulty criteria.

And aside from their reasons for terminating him....this reminds me of the Bill Cosby post here last week. The fact is....the victims are NOT seeking public attention. Compare that with the allegations against MJ where people are seeking money and media access to 'tell their story'. When you have multiple people...with similar stories...who are NOT seeking media attention and are, in fact, reluctant to talk about it....the likelihood of the accusations being legitimate seems more probable.

the burden of proof is on the news outlet.

there are news outlets that hurl allegations towards "famous" (i don't know if this guy is famous in canada or not) people all the time
and they never back up them up with concrete evidence.
they're called tabloids.

either this publication has just blown the lid off some sort of scandal or they've completely sullied their reputation by publishing a tabloid-esque story drafted entirely off unproven allegation in an otherwise "legitimate" news publication.

the ball is really in their court now...

if they don't in some way prove their story's allegations - i would think it is going to massively hurt their publication's reputation as well as leave them open to a libel suit.

<-- never forget the 2000's.

which is understandable cause it's weird.

His employer, the CBC (think NBC but state-sponsored) terminated him. The article written about the allegations was a different media company....The Toronto Star.

And the Toronto star doesn't have a burden of proof because police investigated the incident. They are simply reporting that there were allegations and an investigation took place. They're allowed to print that regardless of his guilt/innocence. There's no possible libel suit here. It's simply a wrongful dismissal suit against his employer...not the newspaper that ran the story first.

And yah, I'd characterize him as being famous in Canada.

And if there WAS any doubt....he used to be in a group called 'Moxy Fruvous'. They were like the Barenaked ladies....without the 'edge'. lol. Here's their unforgiveable big hit....and it's kinda ironic right now:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylaLG-DdT7E

I'm kinda pulling a 360 now. Seems a lot more likely that he's a violent and abusive asshole that tells his victims 'just enough' to get them in a situation where he can have his way with a backdoor 'it was consensual' defence. Ewww.

Really nice guy. He said there's gonna be bombs dropped tomorrow.

Here's another article that is very clearly about Gian. While not incriminating....and can't help but think the author is homophobic....it does suggest a pattern of behaviour:

the guest introduction.

Yeah, they're a bit much.

A minor thing, but I've always been annoyed by the show intro, and his insistence on ending it with the 'rhymes with Q' thing.

I have a friend that worked for him, and his management of Lights.
Never got around to asking why they moved on, but I wonder if his behavior had anything to do with it.

But yeah. He disarms them with flattery. He'll have some run-of-the-mill indie rock act on and you'd think they were Picasso by his introduction.

What REALLY bothers me about this....is his hiding behind a 'progressive' and open-minded, sexually liberated platform. I honestly thought him to be a victim at first. A man who was sexually explorative and was paying the cost of a sort of 'reverse sexism'. That a man can't explore these things consensually without being associated with sexist, misogynistic assholes. There's an agenda there that I have sympathy with. Men are between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, if they attempt to express themselves sexually they are pigs. On the other, if they don't attempt to express themselves they are a lousy lay and sexually inadequate. His facebook post resonated with me because of that and I'm kinda disappointed that I was so quick to go along with his characterization of his ex.

It's looking like he's just a misogynistic asshole hiding behind 'partial' consent that amounts to rape and assault imo. And you can see why it works. "I'm interested in rough sex, role-playing....exploring." But then the woman gets wayyyyy more than she bargained for and it would be so difficult in the heat of the moment. What he's ACTUALLY into is beating you up. And he's playing off the fact that these women DID vaguely consent without knowing the particulars of his intentions. And they probly have trouble coming forward because of this vague, incomplete 'consent' and he KNOWS that. It's just the creepiest, most sickenly opportunistic way of getting what he wants. I'm actually angry right now. Partially with myself.

It's called Sun here. They have newspapers and just recently started a tv network a few years ago. It's pretty obvious that they are trying to emulate fox news....and they are blatantly racist at times....anti-muslim....the whole thing.

But I would be shocked if they tried to connect Jian's Iranian heritage with this scandal. I suppose it could happen....but I'd be shocked. I'm gonna go check though.

Checked. They very gently kinda spinned it to be a men's rights issue. That's not surprising. If anything...they'd be guilty of covering the story with a sympathetic spin for Gian. They'd be quicker to cover it as a 'feminists crucify man for consensual sexual acts' than they would tackle the race angle. It's also important to point out....the public opinion isn't reflected in this thread...yet. It's fair to say that most people are still where some of us here were initially....that his ex is a crazy bitch and that he deserves privacy and that what consenting adults do is none of our business. I think that's gonna change pretty quickly though. As it did here.

like thats IN the koran right? how can you not look at a culture where women are systematically physically degraded. i mean even in those countries thesmelves where the religion is used as a tool to oppress women, how could you not take a critical look at Islam? thats just being dishonest. and for teh record i think the big three has this issue period, issues with sexuality being dirty and thus actually creating dirty sexuality

I think I dont like the language of "beating"....I really doubt this weirdo was closed fist punching this one lady and she never had no bruises or marks when she went to her friend (who was a nurse) didnt see any marks or they didnt mention any physical marks from being beat over the head.....Not to mention the fact that this lady who was just "beaten"....went out on a SECOND DATE with the guy lol....foh

This is all weird and Jian, CBC and the rest of the Canadian media is handling it really poorly IMO

The lawsuit is purely cosmetic. It's not an option for a unionized employee to sue an empoyer in Canada. You HAVE to go through the union's greivance procedures. It's union law 101 here.

Gian and his lawyers know this. The lawsuit is a PR move....not a legitimate suit that will actually take place.

The BDSM world knows how and where to punch people that don't leave marks. Unfortunately, he's undoubtedly researched this. In fact, there's testimonial to prove it.

One alleged victim claimed 'he laughed and then said 'I know where to punch you so that it won't leave bruises'. I know where and what he's talking about.

Sorry, he's guilty as sin and he's going down.

In response to Reply # 75

He's 'going around and beating up women'.

The fact that he did it with knowledge of how to get away with it. Ie leaving no bruises, hiding behind 'partial consent', emotionally manipulating his victims doesn't change what he's doing. It actually makes him much more dangerous.

As Owen Pallet said....I'm sensitive to the public's perception of BDSM and what's perceived as deviant sex. I KNOW that people get unfairly judged because of something they choose with FULL consent from all participants. Ghomeshi tried to sneak in on this agenda and claim to be the victim. He tricked me for a couple hours. The problem is...his facebook post claiming 'consent and liberated sex practises' was his undoing. That's what motivated the victims to come out. And there will be more as time passes. REst assured, there's several more who are talking to their friends and family right now in anticipation of coming out.

So far, there are 8 women saying there was NOTHING consensual about his violent and inappropriate behavior. That simply doesn't happen to a man who partakes in this stuff in an ethical way. He is NOTHING other than a violent sexual offender. A serial one at that. He needs to go to jail. And he deserves to have his entire life fall apart because of this.

64. "Jian Ghomeshi: 8 women accuse former CBC host of violence, sexual abuse ..."
In response to Reply # 0

More people stepping forward, including Trailer Park Boys actor, Lucy DeCoutere.

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2014/10/29/jian_ghomeshi_8_women_accuse_former_cbc_host_of_violence_sexual_abuse_or_harassment.html

Eight women from across Canada now accuse former CBC host Jian Ghomeshi of abusive behaviour ranging from allegations of beating and choking without consent, to workplace sexual harassment.
The allegations the Star is probing range from 2002 to the present.
One of the women, popular Canadian television actor Lucy DeCoutere, has agreed to be identified. DeCoutere, who plays Lucy on Trailer Park Boys, recalls an incident in 2003 when she alleges Ghomeshi, without warning or consent, choked her to the point she could not breathe and then slapped her hard three times on the side of her head.
“He did not ask if I was into it. It was never a question. It was shocking to me. The men I have spent time with are loving people,” said DeCoutere, who, when she is not acting on the television show, is a captain in the Royal Canadian Air Force in New Brunswick.

Ghomeshi, 47, was fired Sunday from his job as host of Q, a flagship radio show of the publicly funded broadcaster. Ghomeshi has alleged in a lawsuit filed the next day that CBC made a “moral judgment” that his practice of a bondage-sadism sex life was wrong. He is suing the CBC for $55 million for defamation and breach of trust and the corporation has said it will “vigorously” defend itself against Ghomeshi’s lawsuit.
The Star has presented Ghomeshi, his lawyers and his public relations staff with the allegations in this story and they have yet to respond.
He met some of the women during his 2012 tour to promote 1982, his best- selling memoir about a year in high school in Thornhill. Others he met at film festivals, at music or CBC events, or at the CBC workplace.
Two of the women who allege they were physically assaulted also say that before the alleged assaults in his home he introduced them to Big Ears Teddy, a stuffed bear, and he turned the bear around just before he slapped or choked them, saying that “Big Ears Teddy shouldn’t see this.”
One of the new women to come forward is a woman in her mid-20s who was a CBC producer in Montreal who dreamed of being on Q. He met her at one of his book signings. Ghomeshi allegedly took her to his hotel room, threw her against the wall and was very “forceful” with her. She said she performed oral sex “to get out of there.” The woman, who still works in the media but not at CBC, said she decided not to complain about his behaviour because she feared he was too powerful.
“I felt like Jian was CBC god,” she told the Star in an interview. She is the second CBC woman to come forward with allegations of sexual harassment by Ghomeshi. The CBC has announced they are investigating the first case, where Ghomeshi allegedly told a CBC staffer he wanted to “hate f---” her.
Generally, the stories the women have told the Star describe a man obsessed with his image and power, and someone who they say has little or no respect for barriers.
Over the course of the Star’s investigation, women who say they were victimized said they did not feel comfortable putting their name to the allegations. Some say they feared retaliation from Ghomeshi, online harassment and a negative impact on their careers.
DeCoutere said it was time for someone to speak publicly about the matter.
She first met Ghomeshi at a barbecue at a Banff television festival in 2003. They chatted and, in time, she visited Toronto and they had dinner at a restaurant on the Danforth. She recalls him telling her how famous he was and “how lucky you are to be with me.” They went back to his house in Riverdale. DeCoutere said they began making out and then she alleges he pushed her against the wall, choked her with his hands around her neck and then slapped her three times.
“That was something I had never experienced before,” DeCoutere said. She left his house shortly after that in a taxi. “It did not escalate; it stopped,” she said.
In addition to her work as an actor, DeCoutere is a captain in the air force and a training development officer, ensuring that people in the service are receiving appropriate training.
What follows are seven more cases that, including DeCoutere’s allegations, bring to eight the total number of women who have come forward with stories of abuse. Of these eight stories, four were included in the Star’s original story published on Monday. Four of the women have come forward this week.
Ghomeshi, in a Facebook posting Sunday evening, wrote in an emotional statement that he has “done nothing wrong.” He said it is not unusual for him to engage in “adventurous forms of sex that included role-play, dominance and submission.” However, he said it has always been consensual. His lawyers echoed this in the statement of claim filed as part of his lawsuit.
In his posting, Ghomeshi writes: “Let me be the first to say that my tastes in the bedroom may not be palatable to some folks. They may be strange, enticing, weird, normal, or outright offensive to others. . . . But that is my private life. . . . And no one, and certainly no employer, should have dominion over what people do consensually in their private life.”
In 2002, Ghomeshi, then 35, was the host of Play, a culture and arts television show on CBC Newsworld. He struck up a conversation with a woman who was roughly his age and invited her to a taping of the show. The first time she came to the taping at CBC headquarters, they ended the evening at a local pub and then he drove her to her car. She alleges that as soon as they were in the car Ghomeshi reached over to the passenger seat, grabbed her hair and “yanked it hard.”
“I was completely shocked,” she said. “He asked if I like it rough. Quite honestly I don’t remember what I said. I was so shocked.”
Though she regrets it now, she returned to a taping of the show two weeks later. He asked her to his home in Riverdale. Once there, she alleges that without consent he grabbed her hair and pulled her down to the floor. Then, she alleges, he delivered three sharp punches to the side of her head while she lay on the floor.
“I was crying. Just crying. He stood there looking at me and said, ‘You should leave.’ ” The woman said she called a taxi and left the home.
The CBC program As it Happens also interviewed this woman and broadcast an account of her allegations Wednesday.
In 2005, Ghomeshi, then 38, was at a Toronto music and dance event in a park in Toronto. He ran into a woman he knew from the arts and culture scene. The woman, 34, had gone on a few dates with Ghomeshi but they had never been intimate. They went for a walk when the event was over and, according to the woman, Ghomeshi attacked her while they were sitting on a bench. He began kissing her forcefully and then “put his hands around my neck and choked me.”
“He smothered me,” she said. She alleges Ghomeshi then grabbed her arms hard and “bit” her, then pushed her down on the park bench and “groped” her.
“I pushed him away. It really scared me. He was so aggressive,” the woman said. The next day, she said Ghomeshi contacted her and “acted like nothing had happened.”
“There was absolutely nothing consensual about what happened to me,” the woman said.
A CBC employee in her late 20s alleges that in 2007 Ghomeshi was sitting with her and other producers at a story meeting for his radio show Q. After their colleagues stood up and left, she alleges Ghomeshi leaned in close to her and quietly said “I want to hate f--- you”.
Later, as the two were walking in to the Q studio, she alleges he laughed to her and quietly said, “Wasn’t that funny when I told you I wanted to grudge f--- you?”
Three years later, she alleges that on his way out of the Q studio, Ghomeshi approached her from behind and cupped her buttocks.
The woman later complained about Ghomeshi to her union representative at the CBC, who told her he reported her complaints to a CBC manager and to the executive producer of Q. She did not file a formal grievance.
She says she was called to a meeting with Q’s executive producer to discuss her complaints, whom she says asked her “what (she) could do to make this a less toxic work environment?”
To her knowledge, Ghomeshi was never reprimanded for the incidents.
The CBC announced Tuesday that in the wake of a Toronto Star story describing this woman’s allegations it has launched an investigation.
In 2012, a CBC producer in her mid-20s attended a book signing by Ghomeshi in Montreal. She waited in line to have her book signed, and once standing in front of Ghomeshi, she recalls telling him that her dream was to work on his radio show, Q. He asked her if she would like to join him and his friends for drinks after the event, she says. She agreed, and later remembers meeting him at the lobby of the Opus Hotel, where he was staying. He arrived alone and embraced her, she says.
“This isn’t a professional meeting,” she recalls Ghomeshi saying to her on the way to McKibbins Irish Pub. Seated in a booth, she says he rubbed her legs with both hands, explaining, “I have anxiety. Touching helps.”
“The two worlds can co-exist,” she alleges he told her. “I’ve done it before.”
She remembers telling Ghomeshi, “I want to work for you, not date you.” She said Ghomeshi kept complaining that his eyes were dry and he had to get his contact lenses out.
They left the pub and went to Tim Hortons, where Ghomeshi bought a panini and later invited her to his hotel room, saying he had to take his contact lenses out.
“I feel like a big moron now,” said the woman, who is no longer with the CBC. “I should have seen it coming.”
In the hotel room, she recalls going to the bathroom and, as she was leaving it, discovering the lights were dimmed.
She alleges Ghomeshi roughly threw her against the wall and kissed and fondled her forcefully. She states that she then performed fellatio on Ghomeshi “just to get out of there.”
“I was saying to him, “I don’t want to do this, I want to work for you.”
As she was leaving the room crying, she says, she heard Ghomeshi say, “I’ll talk with my executive producer about you.”
The next morning she received a text from Ghomeshi. “Happy Thursday,” it read. She was shocked.
She says she did receive an invitation to a job interview from Ghomeshi’s executive producer shortly thereafter. In Toronto, she recalls, she was surprised to find Ghomeshi present at the interview.
Immediately after she left the CBC building, she says Ghomeshi texted her to say that she looked sexier than ever in the interview, and he invited her out that night for drinks.
She declined.
“I feel gross about the whole thing. I feel used,” the woman said.
In 2012, a fan of Ghomeshi’s in her mid-20s came to his book event in a small city in Eastern Canada. She stood in line to get her copy of his memoir signed, and she recalls him being overwhelmingly friendly, asking her name and many questions about herself. The next day, she received a private Facebook message from him containing his phone number and an invitation to call him.
The two corresponded online, and Ghomeshi allegedly introduced violent sexualized language into their conversation, assuring her it was all fantasy and encouraging her to participate through email, which she did. She says he invited her to visit him in Toronto. She came, she says, but wouldn’t stay at his house. They went out for dinner, then back to a dorm at the University of Toronto where she was staying in the room of a friend who was out of town.
She alleges that in the stairwell, Ghomeshi slammed her against a cement wall and she dropped her belongings. When she knelt to pick them up, he choked her from behind and struck her across the head. He demanded that she stand, and he marched her up the stairs into her friend’s empty dorm room.
She says he demanded that she kneel, then hit her repeatedly about the head while she stared up in shock. She asked him about bruising, and he laughed and replied that he knew how to hit her so there wouldn’t be any. He hit her again, and she stared in disbelief and shock. She remembers feeling that he then lost interest and left, hugging her on his way out of the building. She later sent him an accusatory email, and he responded by email. The Star has copies of the correspondence.
“it IS about sex,” wrote Ghomeshi in an email to the woman, asserting that she had consented, “it WAS. . . that you’ve decided to turn this ugly is disappointing. i wish for good karma into 2013.”
Also in 2012, another fan of Ghomeshi’s, also in her mid-20s, went to his book event in a small city in Eastern Canada. She stood in line to get her copy of his memoir signed, and when she stood before him, she recalls him asking her name and many questions about herself. She recalls that he wrote down details on a Post-it note, and later that evening he found her on Facebook and sent her his phone number and an invitation to get in touch. She did, and says she and Ghomeshi had dinner that evening, kissed and parted. They corresponded, and Ghomeshi allegedly introduced violent sexualized language into their conversation, assuring her when she failed to respond that it was all fantasy and encouraging her to participate, which she did. She recalls him assuring her these things would not happen in real life.
Ghomeshi invited her to visit him in Toronto at his house in Cabbagetown, she says, and she did.
When she arrived at his house and greeted him, she says Ghomeshi answered the door and stared at her. Without speaking, she alleges that he threw her against the wall and demanded that she get on her knees and perform fellatio. She alleges that when she kneeled down he struck her repeatedly about the head, “hard enough that (her) vision was blurred.”
She says he took his belt off, tied it tight around her neck, “yanked” it, and led her around by the belt. They had intercourse, she said, and during it she alleges he whipped her back with his belt and hit her about the head. She alleges he put his full body weight on her face during fellatio, to the point where she gagged, couldn’t breathe, and felt she would vomit. A subsequent encounter, she alleges, left her with deep bruising on her body.
She alleges that when she later confronted Ghomeshi and showed him pictures of her bruising, he told her that he found her bruises to be “hot.”
The woman told the Star that during this visit to his house she noticed he had a teddy bear in his room. She said he turned the teddy bear around so that the bear was facing away from them.
Last year, in 2013, a woman in her mid-20s says she had been on a few dates with Jian, but they never had sex. After they had been out of touch for weeks, she recalls Ghomeshi inviting her to his new house in Toronto’s Beach area because he “needed” to see her to discuss something important. When she arrived, she says Ghomeshi sat her down for an intimate conversation. She says he told her that she might be “the one” for him, that he “didn’t buy this big house to throw parties, but to raise a family.”
He then kissed her, she says, and while kissing he “pulled (her) hair so hard my neck flew backward, and when it did,” she alleges, “he smacked me.” She objected and asked why he did this. He laughed, she says, and explained to her that in order for him to build a future with her, he would need to see if they were sexually compatible, and she would have to “let (him) enjoy this the way (he) wants to.” She says that he then turned his teddy bear around on his bed, telling her the bear “shouldn’t see this.”
Ghomeshi began kissing her again, she says, and struck her in the face once more, harder than before. He pointed out his erection, she says, as proof that she was “the one” for him. He then allegedly demanded she kneel in a constrained position, allegedly grabbed her by the neck and hit her in the face hard, and allegedly engaged her in fellatio, forcefully. She says Ghomeshi bit her, leaving marks on her breasts, inner thighs and back. Later, Ghomeshi called her a degrading term. She objected, she says, and told him, “don’t talk to me like that.”
She says Ghomeshi shrank away from her at that moment, sulking. “You’re making me feel like a weirdo,” she recalls him saying. He then said, “You need to go,” and left the room. She dressed and walked downstairs, where she found Ghomeshi on his couch, absorbed in his computer screen, checking Twitter. She left the house, she says. He did not say goodbye.
Months later, she confronted him in an email, suggesting that details of his behaviour might go public. “i’m shaking as I read this,” he responded, “can we please talk?”

between a "woman beater" and a BDSM Perv or whatever the "appropriate" label is for that kind of person.

He clearly thought he was a god cause he was the big man on campus at CBC...but everyone in the city in reality doesn't look at him like that. I've never have and the city is VERY small, especially if you work in the entertainment industry. Anyways he thought he was a god the don who could throw out cheesy pick up lines and straight up choke, pull hair, slap every woman like they were the porn stars in a typical deep-throat-gag porno found on Xvideos. He thought he could go around and act as if that was everyday life...or at least when he was alone with them in a room. Yes he's DEFINITELY guilty of being that creep...but labeling him a "woman beater" is kind of ridiculous. Not even kind of...its just fucking ridiculous and poor use of language by the whole media in Canada that is only being used to help paint that picture so he can't win his million dollar case. WHICH he shouldnt win because he has NO case. We all know or have heard actual stories of men beating women..this isn't one of them. Next time you dick slap your girlfriend in the face just know....if she wants...she can call you a woman beater lol

you'd think you would at least consider how sleazy you look defending someone who's connection might be important to you professionally, with the the thinnest of arguments.

her story is that it was not at all consensual. multiple women report the same thing.

And think I'm defending him I could give two shits what happens to him

My beef is with people wanting to get mad at the media when they use language to paint people in a bad light on purpose when It only effects their agenda or when they think it directly effects them (ie. trayvon or any kid being called a "thug"). But when it's done to people you don't care for u ain't saying shit cause because it fits your agenda. Don't call bullshit and then be the bullshitter when it benefits your side of the argument u can't pick and choose when u want the media to be fair. Fuck Jian, but calling him a "woman beater" is fucking retarded

I don't think you've read enough of the accounts from the woman. And there's more coming. Here's the basic formula he's using:

Goes to event (book signing, media event, etc)....scopes out women around 25 years old (he's older than 40)....introduces and smoozes her....two days later, finds her on facebook and asks out on date. Goes on date....mentions that he's into rough sex....invites starstruck woman back home. As soon as he closes the door....BAM. Chokehold. Then close-fisted punches her several times above the ear to the side of the skull. This leaves no marks but momentarily incapacitates the victim....gives a HUGE headache for several minutes afterwards. (up to an hour) 3 of the 9 women who have come forward described this same story.

This is not slapping your dick on a lover's face or smacking an ass or calling your girlfriend a 'whore' while having sex. This is a sneaky way to violently assault someone without their consent. He is PUNCHING THEM IN THE SIDE OF THEIR HEAD. That, is by definition, 'beating women'...or 'assualt'...or 'sexual assault'. And there is no grey area here.

It's retarded to call someone who, without any consent, close-fisted punches a women in the side of the head repeatedly, a 'women-beater'? I don't get your angle here.

We really need to differentiate here. Gian is not being judged because he is into BDSM. That's how he tried to lamely frame it and he'll have no choice but to back off on that now. This has NOTHING to do with BDSM. This is assault. Sexual Assault. Consent is everything in establishing that difference. Gian would like this to be about him liking 'alternative lifestyles'. The BDSM world has already strongly condemned his actions. Blurring those lines....as you are doing.....is highly problematic and completely misguided.

My beef is with people and the language they and the media are using, regardless if i think Jian is a fuck boy or not. People cant pick and choose when to paint people a certain way when it fits their agenda. Thats all my beef is with.

Aside from all the other stuff....this:

"Fuck Jian, but calling him a "woman beater" is fucking retarded"

I just don't get what you're saying. In light of knowing that you HAVE read the accounts of the women....are you not backing off that statement? If not, what kind of stubborn are you? I said shit in the beginning of this thread that I tried to make amends for too. Knowing that you know the accounts made by the 9 different woman (not including some anynomous accusations on social media BEFORE the scandal happened)....honestly, I'd be disturbed in your reluctance to use the word 'woman beater' for his purported actions. Not only is it not applicable....it's fucking retarded?

He's not a woman beater because he doesn't look like this?

Because he's not (from what we know) in any sort of long abusive relationship?

Basically arguing semantics, but you're still wrong.

but ok.

The funniest thing is that you are so clear on YOUR stance...with he said she said lol

Again im not on the side of the argument that I think this guy is innocent of being a creep, perv, and doing the creepy guy move of hitting a woman for the off chance that both sides will find sexual pleasure out of it. Not denying any of this AT ALL if the events women are coming forth with are actually true. But I am denying the whole label of "wife beater" "woman beater"....those are totally different things. "Sexual Assault" and "Assault" are completely 2 different things. Thats why they have two different words lol thats how words are used. Thats how words work. Thats how english works.

smh.

Owen Pallett

I was challenged by a friend to say something about the recent allegations against Jian Ghomeshi.

Jian is my friend. I have appeared twice on Q. But there is no grey area here. Three women have been beaten by Jian Ghomeshi.

I have sat with Jian over drinks and discussed our respective anxiety disorders. We have been photographed hugging on camera.

Just ten days ago, I helped him find musicians for his father’s funeral. Three women have said that Jian beat them without their consent.

“We will never really know what happened.” Yes we do. Jian beat, at the very least, three women. Three women said so. “They were jilted exes.” Maybe so. They were beaten by Jian.

“They were freelance writers looking to get ahead.” Three women were beaten by Jian Ghomeshi.

At no point here will I ever give my friend Jian’s version of the truth more creedence than the version of the truth offered up by three women. Anonymity does not mean these women do not exist.

“They were engaged in BDSM role-play.” This: this is something I need to talk about.

The beauty of BDSM relationships is that the power is always in the hands of the sub. BDSM and choke play is a subversion of male violence.

To hear that anybody has been abusing the BDSM power relationship for the purpose of engaging in non-consensual violence-against-women is horrifying.

That is not the point of BDSM. BDSM is in fact about the exact opposite thing. It is about repurposing acts of violence into creating a power dynamic of fucking EQUALITY.

As for the rest. I have seen my Facebook feed littered with comments about how “for years we’ve known Jian to be a shady character.”

I too have heard endless rumours that he’s been a bad date, and have heard stories of shadiness and strange behaviour.

I have heard about his ridiculous pick-up lines and have (to my shame) tittered about them with my friends. But I have never heard, until today, that Jian Ghomeshi beats women.

I am skeptical of arts reporting. I am skeptical of Canadian journalism. I am sensitive toward shaming of people who are so-called sexual deviants.

But let’s be clear. Whether the court decides that predatory men are punished or exonerated does not silence the voices of the victims. It does not make victims liars.

Whether our culture continues to celebrate the works of predatory men is another issue. It does not silence the voices of the victims.

Jian Ghomeshi is my friend, and Jian Ghomeshi beats women. How our friendship will continue remains to be seen.

I signed his artist's petition. Well done Owen!

the ugly truth is is that we're all far too familiar and comfortable with this type of behavior. its just normal. we're numb to it, especially men

its like there are people who KNOW men are abusive in all sorts of ways and still have their kids around them cuz in their minds theyre like "no not mine, cuz im a strong man and i will kick some ass" but youre being a hypocrit right there cuz if they're in your circle than your loved ones are at risk period

this was really brave of him to write this peice. more dudes need to just address the reality of the issue, like really just ADDRESS it, get out of denial if society is gonna change. its not enough for victims to come forward. victims will always come forward, thats how owe know whats going on, its the rampant denial thats disturbing

like in that post about street harrassment, its like very strange that some men wont even acknowledge that sexual harrassment is even a REALITY, the reality of their daughters, mothers, of alot of the women in their lives. if they wont even acknowledge reality, how do we even get to the level of awareness where this shit can just stop

ionno man. great peice though. its a step in the right direction

Nine and counting. I'm guessing there's at least a hundred out there and the count will reach 20 by Monday. Plus, the PR firm he hired last week has dropped him. Somebody better put Jian on suicide watch cause he's finished:

http://www.thestar.com/news/crime/2014/10/30/author_reva_seth_accuses_jian_ghomeshi_of_assault.html

Y'know....there's a lot of husbands/boyfriends/fathers/brothers right now coming to terms with these accounts. I imagine the urge would be to get a ski-mask and hide in his fucking bushes. Blindside him. He deserves it. That's exactly what he did to these women. Except there'd be no worries about leaving marks and bruises. Someone needs to punch the shit outta him.

And prior to Jian's open letter Facebook status, the Toronto Star's editors hadn't felt the story was strong enough to break. Once Jian put the story out there it was therefore newsworthy enough to tell what their investigation had uncovered.

So I t's entirely possible that if he hadn't mistaken Brown to be talking about him, he wouldn't have called the meeting with CBC, wouldn't have gotten fired, wouldn't have written the letter, the Star wouldn't have published, and we'd still be listening to his show. Crazy!

Talk about self-destructive narcissism.

His former band, Moxy Fruvous of all people have distanced themselves:

"We had no inkling that Jian engaged in this type of behaviour. We abhor the idea of a sexual relationship of any sort being entered into without full consent from both parties and condemn violence against women in any form. We wish only health and healing to everyone involved"

And then Lights...who disturbingly called him her 'superhero' during the initial stages of the scandal:

"I posted comments about Jian Ghomeshi the day after he was dismissed by the CBC where I rushed to defend my manager of 12 years. I am now aware that my comments appear insensitive to those impacted and for that I am deeply sorry."

Dumped by the CBC, dumped by his PR team, dumped by his publisher, dumped by his agent. Who's left? The Teddy bear? His house is pretty close to where I live. I expect to see him alone, drinking in one my dive establishments soon. And we got something for him too. lol

a lot of those accusers in the Cosby case started out anonymous (in reference to the dozen corroborators on the Constand case)...as more names were filled in, i definitely became more and more convinced

so i agree with that...

i agree that false rape allegations as a whole are very rare...my one point of contention in that area is that the numbers are likely a bit different for celebrities

i'm not so certain anonymous accusers should be taken less seriously either...how else are people afraid to come forward going to be heard?

but the step of attaching a name and a face takes it to a different level.

anonymously anyone can say anything. a named individual is at the very least putting their entire reputation on the line.

if you hear anonymous allegation and say "let's wait until there's some more information" there's actually information to wait for

I'd argue that Bill Cosby is Cliff Huxtable to most people, and the general perception is that Cliff Huxtable would never, ever, ever, ever even think about doing some shit like that. He's Cliff! He eats big sandwiches, tells stories, and wears the ugliest sweaters this side of Christmas. He's about as iconic a character as we've ever seen on American television. I'd argue that it makes perfect sense that most people would have a far easier time believing such allegations when aimed at a relative stranger as opposed to a guy they grew up on and hold some semblance of sentimental attachment to.

I don't even know who this guy is and yes, it's much easier to accept his allegations at face value whereas part of me didn't- and still doesn't- *want* to believe Cliff Huxtable would do something like that.

It's the same reason white conservatives have a strong tendency toward believing Darren Wilson's version of events and think Obama is the worst leader who ever lived.

The depths just got deeper:

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2014/11/28/jian_ghomeshi_did_not_ask_for_consent_accusers_say.html

These gut-twisting scenarios should be mandatory reading around here. Understanding that this experience and this type of manipulation is REAL and not the fault of the victim.

Oh...and in terms of the 'agenda' that Ghomeshi talked about when he tried to pre-empt all this.....the 'obsessed reporter' that was 'harassing him' just executed the equivalent of stomping on someone's stupid face after already knocking them out. Tell your momma why your face looks like that Jian.

There are so many layers to this. The CBC is NOT being gutsy in making this doc. EVERYONE involved with this has an angle....and the one thing common amongst all the players (Kevin Brown, the CBC execs, the producers and co-workers of Jian and EVEN the Fifth Estate itself) is personal ambition.

How many more assualts took place so that Kevin Brown could get his story? He says 'I would've shared the information I had with the CBC because this was "real"'. Acting like his treasured story wasn't as important as justice. But he didn't go to the police did he? If justice was more important than his story....why wouldn't he inform police that he's spoken to several alleged victims and share his information with them?

The producers and co-workers were obviously more fearful of losing their jobs than outing a serial perpetrator of sexual assault. I wonder how they look themselves in the mirror.

The CBC execs shockingly express that the idea that these behaviours 'may have crossed over into the workplace' was their 'red flag'. Excuse me while I throw up. Hey, Jian can sexually assault people as long as he doesn't do it in the workplace. 'We're not the police'.

And lastly, The Fifth estate accuses execs of 'trying to get ahead of the public outing'. How ironic. This doc ITSELF is an attempt to position the corporation in the eyes of the public. Make no mistake....this is not journalism, this is PR damage control. Essentially pointing the finger at two specific CBC execs and displaying a very contrived attempt to make the larger corporation appear transparent and objective in the aftermath.

it makes the CBC look bad institutionally when you look at what went on, and what its own "investigation" failed to uncover, or seemingly even ask about.

top to bottom, it ain't a good look

for months with the canadian media and public. they've never seen worse press than they did this year.

the glenn greenwald NSA non-leak story made HUGE news in Toronto and the rest of Canada...they were heavily criticized for sitting on vital info about spying that went against everything the CBC assured themselves to stand for.

The CBC is largely publicly funded, so this faced huge criticism.

After the Ghomeshi scandal (both for himself, and the dangerous scandal of what the CBC knew and WHY they did nothing about it), it is no shock that they will do pretty much whatever they can to get back in the good graces of the public and media.

While I agree that this great doc took balls to air in a general sense, there is absolutely strategy in presenting this. This was not the regular organic political pot-stirring the CBC has been proud of for years (CBC Marketplace is one of the best in the country at exposing wrongdoing to consumers and the public).

on his cultural background... while I hadn't heard anything of that type until now, I would never have ruled out that some in the general public were on that and here now is the evidence: https://nowtoronto.com/news/ghomeshi-heckled-as-he-leaves-court-on-$100,000-bail/

"As he exited the court building Ghomeshi was met with an intense crush of media and onlookers. He was heckled by some people in the crowd, who shouted "animal!" and "go back to Iran!" (Ghomeshi was born in England to Iranian parents)."

one of the journos who broke the story is writing a book, apparently even though some of the victims don't want their details included.

and might not carry a new post, but okp might be interested in one sorta 'good' thing that has recently come out of this, which is Canadian rapper Shad becoming the new host of the show that just relaunched a couple weeks ago. I don't know if they'd block this stuff in the States like US networks do for things like that in Canada, but he's had some cool interviews and it does stream.

http://www.cbc.ca/radio/q/watch/interviews

Pras was on to talk about a documentary involving him and getting Michel Martelly to run for president in Haiti. The Mavis Staples interview sounds like it was pretty awesome. I haven't checked out a lot of it since the launch ep, but I feel like okp could dig a lot of what's being presented.
