Be safe. And try to document as much as you can. I know we are really only getting a bit of the story and it's folks like you who will give us the real.

Thanks, and if there is any way we can help, let us know.

anarchists and all the other outsiders rolling through her for photo ops and publicity.

If you want to come pick up a broom and trash bag and clean up or delivery food to the elderly during the DAYTIME that's fine but don't have your ass out there after dark. That shit is not a game, its a legit war zone. Keke Palmer just about got her young ass violated out here thinking this shit is a joke.

We don't need any more "protesters" out here. Like I said before we're using 1960's tactics with a 2014 enemy, we're playing checkers while they're playing chess. This fight isn't going to be won on a street corner, its going to be won in the court room and in the voting booths.

you are an average citizen.
you want to do something to create the political will
to make ppl in power give a damn about police brutality.

what--exactly-- should you do?

i mean shit, if we are assuming this person in the OP
is well intentioned, it would be worth it to make the trip out there.
if for no other reason than to maybe meet ppl that are about
getting off their ass and into the fight.

and like it or not, having ppl in the streets
keeps the shit in the news so that other ppl
that are doing the tactics you want to see done have an easier go of things.

do you think that power ppl WANTED to negotiate with MLK?
do you think they were more likely to sit down with him
knowing that an armed, decided non-non violent panther party
was waiting in the wings?

in other words,
why are you discouraging ppl from trying to make moves?

i mean...

damn.

vote, sign up others to vote, drive them to the polls if need be to get the right people in power that can affect positive change

what fight? with the Missouri national guard?

Most of the legit organizations in the area have scaled back a their organized protesting activities and have asked people to stay out of the area after dark.

So who exactly is MLK in this situation? and what exactly are they going to "negotiate"?

I'm discouraging people from going into an unsafe environment and providing cover for those out there with more nefarious intentions that are hurting the case more than helping.

and it's funny how you are asking who the MLK of our time is.
there is a decent chance we don't know them yet.

they may be organizing a protest right now.
and discouraging ppl from going to it... that's not helping.
discouraging ppl from writing about it... that's not helping.

you know what else doesn't help?

telling people that voting and the judicial system is the way to
change it all for the better. because as you know, having
the "right people" in office doesn't do shit
unless their constituents are organized enough to hold them accountable
with large numbers of ppl after the election is over.

we don't have that level of organization yet.
we don't have the leaders that are capable of doing that yet.

but the shit going on right now could be the
training ground where leaders learn how to motivate, turn out, and organize
large numbers of ppl.

you discouraging ppl from going to their events is almost certainly not helping.

in other words, give the next generation a chance to
figure this shit out.

let them use hashtags. let them organize vigils.
let them try.

i mean shit... our generation ain't exactly setting the world on fire.
our generation got us here.

let's not discourage ppl that are actually getting off their ass
to try to figure out how to make it do what it do.

let's not do that, player.

what you armchair revolutionaries have to say then.

At this point "protesting" isn't going to do any thing for the Michael Brown case. We will just have to let legal system take its course.

What people CAN do is try to effect change in their OWN communities as far as getting the right elected officials in place and holding them accountable AND educating our youth to avoid paths that make them targets as well making each other targets.

lets say, hypothetically, that one wanted to hold elected officials accountable.
how would one do that.

maybe you could assemble a group of ppl to research a problem
they all cared about, and then come up with a solution
that an elected official had the power to enact.

how do you make the elected official do it?

maybe you call a large public meeting, invite the official,
and then bring out about a thousand or so people and
make the elected official give you a yes or no answer.

yeah, that could work.
but how do you get 1000 people to show up at one place?

maybe you start in churches, and get the people from there.
maybe you get pastors to start preaching about it
and then you recruit ppl from the churches to bring their friends
to this event where you'll be holding the kings and nobels of our time accountable.

but still, it's hard to get 1000 ppl in one place at one time.
you might not get 1000 ppl out your first time.
maybe you only get 250.

maybe you learn organizing ppl on a local level to do it the way
you suggested is hard work. something that takes experience.

maybe, you'd come to realize you can't do this alone.

You need more ppl organizing. More ppl that have
the ability to get ppl involved.

maybe, you're happy that ppl are angry about SOMETHING
now.

maybe you take hope in the fact that there are other ppl trying to organize,
trying to figure it out.

and maybe you are sick of ppl saying that all we need to do is turn out and vote...
as if the ability to even mobilize ppl to get out the vote
are skills that just fall out of the sky. much less having the
organizational capacity to get ppl to KEEP paying attention
after the election is over.

since you made an assumption about me,
I'll make one about you.

you are the type of guy that... you know what?
nevermind. i don't know what you are doing on a local level.

all i know is what you are posting right now is
hurting that cause.

I'll leave it at that.

it would be great to have an organization like that in fergeson.
maybe somebody is out there building one now.

or maybe the person that will build it is at a rally.

or maybe somebody that is seeing all of the press coverage this is getting
will be inspired to build an organization like that in their own community.

i don't know how you read what i wrote and came to this conclusion...

I've worked for campaigns across the country, this isn't about any of that. This isn't an AFL/CIO or a democrat or even a congressional black caucus thing - all we got is us.

Now I'm not saying that we should all get on the bus or that anyone should. But to deny that something hangs in the balance here is to be woefully ignorant.

There's no PR or lobbying firm against police abuse of black bodies. None of those orgs give a shit. If push comes to shove AFL/CIO and every other union is siding with FOP.

The locals should take the lead on this but that doesn't mean they don't need outside support. Whomever goes there will find out what is required of them when they get there. They will also have a responsibility to their own communities. This issue is much bigger than Ferguson. As you may have noticed shit didn't pop off in long island, but this protest has reinvigorated protests and demonstrations across the country and worldwide. We are all vested in this.

sounds like you care and have thought about it

one of my issues with being so contrarian to those who are actually doing something

whether you agree with them or not

outside of ideas and words

you aren't really offering an option

some good ideas in there, and I've heard the same elsewhere

but if you disagree with the methods being used

why not get involved, and make your suggestions viable options?

or is contrarian as far as you are willing to go?

and there was one gentleman in particular

from his accent, sounded middle eastern

but he just kept yelling and yelling and yelling

about how marching isn't going to do anything

somebody shot you, shot back, etc...

so I told him, he could leave

and I used hand gestures to get him to sit down and shut up while the families spoke

if people have other ideas, or want to do something else

cool, I'm genuinely interested

but if you aren't going to actually do something

I think you should STFU, IMO

and as I replied in a previous post

I am a college graduate and I do vote

and nothing has changed

this is a generation that lived through Rodney King

which is almost 25 years ago

and from Eric Gardner, to Michael Brown, to Ezell Ford

the police are still murdering unarmed black men

the riots and protests are intially a reaction

because folks need an outlet

but people want to sit at home and wage their finger, on some, you all should be doing this and not that

WHAT'S STOPPING YOU?

is irrelevant.

The primary reason I'm saying she shouldn't go is it's unsafe. Honestly I don't know her in real life and I don't really care what she does but I would give that same advice to any female relative or close friend that was talking about going out there.

As far as the Mike Brown case like I said I think we have to let the legal system take it's course. No amount of protesting is going to help that. It CAN hurt by possibly swaying potential jurors in favor of the officer.

Also I think the powers that be are actually using the protesters to make the community and blacks look bad anyway. The timetable in the release of certain information, the shuffle of law enforcement agencies, it's been confirmed that there are "anarchist" plants in the crowds who are intentionally trying to incite violence. There's all kind of crazy shit going on that's not reaching national media. This whole thing smells like a big setup. For what I don't know.

Also on another note, I personally feel like blacks men killing each other is a much bigger is but it's too big to tackle so people look for smaller soapbox issues like this to rally around.

Maybe try the daylight protests??

Because the night time protesters might lose public sympathy at some point and then the police will crack heads.

Be safe.

and if you cant go, donate to somebody who is.

& if you cant donate for the love of god PLEASE shut the fuck up abt telling OTHER people to not donate or go or pay attention!

that is literally what the power structure wants most desperately right now

what is this shit abt? its abt a system, exemplified by the police who feel they have the right to kill you. whether youre black, white, gay, straight, old, young, rich, poor, it doesnt matter.

if we all "calm down" & let this shit die now...we KNOW there will be ANOTHER murder. and another. and...another. i mean, when is enough enough? at what point do we say no we arent going to chill, no we arent going to 'letthe system work' the system been allegedly working for 400 yrs. shit aint no allegedly the system IS working...right now as we speak, we trying to pull that shit apart at the gears

in a week...a bunch of teenagers from bumfuck st louis became THE number one story in the world. how on earth can yall look away from that or not support that? naw man.

i dont support or advocate violence or attacking the police, that is suicide. but i DO absolutely support staying out past the "curfew" and continuing to agitate agitate agitate not just in ferguson but nationwide...til this shit ACTUALLY changes.

not in the next legislative session, not in 2016, not when this or that happens but right NOW man

we dont want not ONE more eric garner. or aiyana jones. or mike brown. or prince jones. or oscar grant. or _____ the next person who pisses off the wrong officer & suffers damage

The past is behind, work on the future.
Teach the youth. Encourage them not to have kids out of wedlock.
Teach them it's not ok to take handouts, teach them pride.
Ferguson is done, and that poor backwards town will never recover.

Thanks for all of your support and kind words.

It's really bad down here. I've never been this afraid before. I've taken part in many protests over the years but this is the most dangerous. The police and Ferguson power structure are doing everything they can to limit the media coverage and to intimidate protesters. They have also forced journalists into a "media area," which limits their ability to report. I saw Don Lemon's punk ass out there...ughh.

47 people were arrested last night for supposedly throwing water bottles and other objects. I saw some young guys (maybe 10) throwing stuff but only after police attempted to physically push them back, while also pepper spraying them. One of my colleagues was arrested around 2am, and we have not been able to get him released.

I'm currently working with a group of ACLU/Amnesty International lawyers on legal strategies, and documenting police abuses. I think the most pressing needs are food for the community, money for legal issues, funds to support protestors (we need gas masks, water, transportation, food etc), and we need folks with REAL skills to come down. We need medical professionals, lawyers, tech folks, organizers/teachers, and photographers really badly. Some people have been down here since the beginning and they are exhausted emotionally and physically. We need others to pitch in.

Here's a link:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sOX4RNO5CPQp4zMUvosoWPNu_fuencZNI1nmCcRuUag/mobilebasic?viewopt=127&pli=1

Even if you are unable to come to Ferguson, you can still take part in local demonstrations. That kind of solidarity is important to keep the movement going on.

I'm exhausted...working mostly on fumes but I just wanted to share.

You already knew Fergusson was under attack
But yet you felt the need to go and make another woe is me "i was accosted by the police" message

Why do ppl that live in Fergusson need food?
Is it a katrina type situation up there?
They cant catch the bus to St Louis and grocery shop?

I feel like this shit is on ice water challenge level now.
Niggas flying to stl just to say they was in the midst of this shit getting teargassed

And of course the police is gonna keep the media contained.
Because if they have to save you like they did Keke Palmer they dont wanna have to trudge through all them knuckleheads to do so.

Im not saying dont protest, but niggas flying cross the country right now aint the business.
This aint a katrina thing where you could come down with a few buckets and help them pump the levees.
If lawyers need to help, they can do that remotely, right?
St louis has one of the best law schools and medical schools in america.
Why they need to come from far and wide?

I just think this was another case of me too ism

Besides "protesting" in the hot ass sun, what are thousands of folk needed in fergusson for?

But i thought about it
This event would make GREAT material for a African American history text/class

My family supports me completely. My husband is actually down here with me. He's worked in union organizing for years before moving into academia so he's been working on improving protest strategies. No one was surprised when we decided to come down here.

Yes, we have children. Two boys and two girls. We both have the skills and experience to truly help the movement. We're not down here just fucking around. We also feel that we need to do something to improve societal conditions for the kids that we have brought into this world. I am scared to death that my kids will one day be a target for police brutality/murder.

A week before we decided to come to Ferguson, we were driving down a street in Mt. Airy and observed two cops harassing a group of black boys riding their bikes. They couldn't have been more than 12 years old. These cops didn't see these boys as kids. We stayed around and waited and the cops let them go. We followed them home to make sure they got there safely and I was damn near in tears.

Our babies are with my Mom right now. We plan to be here for the rest of the week. We have jobs/houses/cars and other responsibilities but we have the means to come down and help. It's the least we can do.

in a fucking war zone and can't even go to school.

Elderly people are trapped in their homes and can't get food or medication because their local stores are burned down and/or looted and public transportation has been re-routed.

All because some folks wanna come out here and pad their resumes and stay out all night and provide cover for the agitators who are exacerbating the problem.

People don't have to come HERE to make a difference. Police brutality is everywhere, they can organize protests in their own cities and make this thing nationwide.

This thing is bigger than Mike Brown. There's a strong chance the officer won't be charged in this case.

Then what?

Burn the city down?

Sure, you don't have to live here, its all entertainment for you, just another reality show. you watch it on CNN for a little while then turn off your tv and go on with your lives.

All these outsiders are flocking to Ferguson stirring shit up and in another week or to they'll all be back home moving on with their lives and the lives of the people that actually live there will be in shambles.

>in a fucking war zone and can't even go to school.

they can't go to school but the 'war zone' is maybe a mile long stretch along West Florissant Ave. it's mostly a commercial area. some private homes have backyards that on W. Florissant.

>Elderly people are trapped in their homes and can't get food

yeah, there are probably some feeling that. but, again, the protesting and other street action is fairly confined to a relatively small area.

>All because some folks wanna come out here and pad their
>resumes and stay out all night and provide cover for the
>agitators who are exacerbating the problem.

not just. plenty of them are there to document what's happening so the police don't get the impression that they can violate constitutional rights w/impunity.

>People don't have to come HERE to make a difference. Police
>brutality is everywhere, they can organize protests in their

that's happening too. there have been several demonstrations here in Chicago over the last few days.

>This thing is bigger than Mike Brown. There's a strong chance
>the officer won't be charged in this case.

that could happen.

>Then what?
>
>Burn the city down?

some will want to. but most of the ppl out there seem to want a fair process. they're out there b/c they fear that if life just went on as normal the prosecutors and police might try to wrap this case up w/o a full and fair investigation. so they keep public pressure on and keep that spotlight on the police and prosecutors in an effort to avoid that.

>Sure, you don't have to live here, its all entertainment for

there are some out of towners present and a good # of the ppl out in the street making noise actually live in the area. or they may be like me where they live elsewhere now but have roots in that area.

fuck you.

That's flat out WRONG, there's a lot shit going on in and around the Canfield apartments were Brown was shot and that is a residential area...

That's already being done, fucking Anderson Cooper is here, Don Lemon, Jake Tapper and ton of other national media not to mention the local media, there's no need for any extra fly-by-night, freelancers from out of town...

1. i said the area is MOSTLY commercial. and it is. the street action is happening on West Florissant which is lined w/commercial business.

2. Canfield intersects W. Florissant. it leads into a large apartment complex - the one where the shooting happened. those ppl are being impacted for sure.

3. as for the base of my knowledge - i have family in the area. i've talked to them about the impact the street action has had on them. they've not felt it except emotionally. but they're still going to work and living life like normal.

i'm sure you feel that way and that's fine. others disagree and so they're out there doing what they feel is necessary. and if i join them in the coming days it'll be b/c i felt it was necessary and wanted to do my part.

fuck you.

tension is high and emotions are boiling over all over the place. but we're all going to get through this just fine. i dunno if any lasting change will come of this but i do hope that the investigation in this particular case is fair and transparent as possible. whatever the outcome i can accept it if the process was fair. i believe the majority of ppl demonstrating want that same thing.

fuck you.

If you notice the OP said nothing more than she WAS GOING to fergusson.
She did not say what her intentions were nor what she intended to accomplish once she reached Fergie.
For all we know, she went to be a pure spectator.

We almost 200 posts deep and we see no action items besides marching and bailing niggas out of jail.

But now, a week later, what was the point?
What good came from the march?
Shit was on tv, funeral broadcast on all networks, and now what?
We in GD tried to #cancelchristmas but are back to talkin bout Arianna Grande and $5 cheese pizzas

Again, what was the point in rushing to Fergie besides taking pictures?
To help?
Help with WHAT specifically?

Just like in that cancel christmas post, nyggas run off without clear goals and objectives then be lost in the sauce
That post has already been built up and tore down a few times but at least OBJEVTIONABLE goals have been created.

Pastors and Black Studies professors are good at creating bridges to nowhere.

I need to finish installing this UIMA framework.

In response to Reply # 0

I am struggling to properly articulate some of the things I've seen.

I will say that police brutality and mass incarceration are the two most important social justice issues of our time. Although some people have been critical of the influx of outsiders going into Ferguson, it was sorely needed. It was necessary because it brought much needed international attention to the situation, and also allowed activists from all over to build with each other. This movement is not over. There are people in every city agitating for changes in the laws and pressuring police departments for increased transparency.

During my time in Ferguson, I was able to speak with many young people in their teens and 20s. They are the vanguard of this movement but they need guidance from elders who do not subscribe to bullshit respectability politics and try to take over their movement. I realized that those of us in our 30s and 40s are those elders.

Now that we're back in Philly, my husband and I will continue to work with the local UNIA and several other organizations. I will post a list of all of the orgs that I know who are working against police brutality and mass incarceration. There are also people in every city going on Freedom Rides to Ferguson over Labor Day weekend.

While in Ferguson, I discovered that I am pregnant with our 5th child. It will probably be a boy. How significant is that?
