Buttigieg surges to third place in new Iowa poll
BY CHRIS MILLS RODRIGO - 03/24/19

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) surged into third place in a poll of the Iowa caucus released Sunday.

Eleven percent of likely Democratic Iowa caucusgoers surveyed by Emerson Polling said they would pick Buttigieg to be their 2020 presidential nominee.

Overall, Buttigieg placed third behind Former Vice President Joe Biden, at 25 percent, and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), at 24 percent.

The only other candidate to receive double-digit support was Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who was the choice for 10 percent of respondents.

"The biggest surprise in this poll is Mayor Pete, last week we saw him inching up in our national poll, and now he’s in double digits in Iowa, America is going to be asking who is 'Mayor Pete'?" Spencer Kimball, director of the Emerson Poll, said.

Buttigieg, who has formed an exploratory committee but has not officially declared, was polling at 0 percent in Emerson's January survey of Iowa, which shows his recognition and support have grown significantly in the last few months.

The Indiana mayor's campaign cleared the donations threshold to participate in presidential debates earlier this month.

His performance in Sunday's Emerson poll was boosted by placing second in the 18-to-29-year-old demographic, with 22 percent. Sanders led that category with 44 percent.

“If Buttigieg is able to maintain his momentum, his candidacy appears to be pulling from the same demographic of young voters as Sanders, and that could become a problem for Sanders,” Kimball said.

Emerson surveyed 249 likely Iowa Democratic caucusgoers between March 21 and 24. The margin of error for the sample is 6.2 percentage points.

i did see this. im a bit concerned. i looked him up around when the whole porn star presidency soundbite was out. not because i liked it but i just was trying to find info on candidates i didnt know about. randomly decided to click on an interview of his and really liked it. so ive been looking more into him and dude is legit to me.

seems like this is the same time everyone started paying attention to him. i know there have been folks pushing for him before that but that town hall really got him the exposure and its so weird to be part of the group that was influenced (in some way) by that.

i dont think ive seen any negative stories on him. im sure there going to start hitting now.

something else.

do candidates give talking points to people that interview them. it never fails that he is asked, how do you go from mayor of 100,000 people to president of the US? its asked in basically the same format too. he obviously has his prepared response for this. at first i figured interviewers were just not creative but now im wondering if he has them ask this to make his point. not a bad thing but just weird.

His answers do sometimes seem robotic...like word for word identical. But I think that just means he's really well-prepared. I think that's a good thing.

I'm also pretty sure he can think on his feet, but we'll see in the debates. I just read that he's already qualified for the first one.

they actually got him talking about stuff that most interviews dont and he had great answers.

it kind of irks me when charlamagne asks about a black agenda because he just lets it float and doesnt have a discussion. this time it was an actual discussion. probably the best part of the interview. maybe the best answer ive heard about it.

most candidates just say their policies will benefit everyone so that includes black people. or i will assign someone to review it. then they move on to something else.

petey is going to be a force. donated last night.

Yea I think what you are seeing is also someone who actually runs something (i.e. a city)

His policies are put into practice at least at a small scale so he isnt even operating from a “theoretical” standpoint
