EXCLUSIVE: The Weinstein Company is ready to greenlight its Richard Pryor biopic, and my, have Harvey Weinstein and Lee Daniels put together a terrific cast. The new additions: Oprah Winfrey will play Pryor’s grandmother, who ran a brothel and raised the iconic comic there; Eddie Murphy will play Pryor’s father, Leroy “Buck Carter” Pryor. Kate Hudson is set to play Pryor’s widow, Jennifer Lee Pryor. And Mike Epps is now locked to play Pryor, a role coveted by a lot of actors. Daniels, who worked with Weinstein and Winfrey on the blockbuster Lee Daniels’ The Butler, will start production in March, after wrapping up the second season of his hit Fox series Empire.

such a complex person as Rich even though Epps is a comedian

I don't recall Epps ever having a lead (or supporting) role in a dramatic film which is critical (for me) because its the more serious aspects to Pryor's life moreso than his comedy that I'm interested and seeing and learning abt

There were many layers to Pryor's life beyond just being an actor and a great stand up comic that imo requires some real acting chops in order to do justice to his life/legacy

>What was Jaime before Ray?

A very talented person who happened to land the role that was tailor-made for him due to him being a really good impressionist and pianist. (Notice he hasn't had an Oscar worthy role since Ray)

production. The Richard Pryor movie has ALREADY been done. It was called, " Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling You".

And IDC who they get to PLAY Richard Pryor, NOBODY is gonna out Richard Pryor, Richard Pryor and I don't believe this movie is gonna outdo Richard's own movie on his life.

Hence, all of this hub bub, is much ado about nothing.

"weak" touch.

If it were made 5 or especially 10 or 15 years earlier, Jojo dancer could have been in its own world in terms of quality.

but...

in the mid-80's, film style was kind of thin and bland, and that was evident in the quality of Jojo dancer.

Not saying this new movie is a "lock" for having a more substantial quality, but I have lot's of disappointment for films of the 1985 - 1988 era, and Jojo dancer is a prime target of that disappointment, so I'm fine with trying to go past Jojo dancer.

A lot of movies from the 80s are considered classics, so it's pretty obvious your talking out of your ass and/or you just don't know what you're talking about.

and yes there were some good movies in those years but some of my fav's disappointed badly.

Scorsese "The Color of money"

Carpenter "They live"

Landis "Spy's like us", "into the night"

Ridley Scott "someone to watch over me"

Those were some big disappointments that "fit" into (if not shaped) the way I was severely "let down" from my previous "infatuation" with film previously.

As a little kid in the late 70's to around 1984, I could see a commercial for a film on TV (Alien, Superman, Friday the the 13th, The Jerk, Creepshow, Trading Places, Purple Rain, Blade Runner, etc.) and the visuals, the way it was edited, the quality of the film/camerawork, the music, the voiceover on the commercial would lead me to be have the feeling: "this movie looks mind-blowing!!!!!!" then, if I saw the movie, usually it would live up to expectations.

All I know, from 1985 to 1988, there was a lot of:

"the film quality/camerawork on this commercial for this movie looks kinda 'blah'"

"this subject matter of this movie looks kinda dull..."

"this looks kinda corny..."

and more and more commercials for films would give me an underwhelming feeling, but....since I liked movies I would go to the movies anyway, and....I usually in 1985 - 1988 didn't like what I saw.

like CJ said, the quaity and writing was poor. The performance was awful. He was not doing quality acting such as Blue Collar. And the movie seemed rushe.

I saw that shit in the theater. It was zzzzzz

In response to Reply # 33

to it...eddie aint gonna be a part of anything dealing with his hero that aint top notch...i dont thk oprah would sign on with anything richard related unless it was at least well thought out initially either. how that translates to a finished product and or sales in the theater is yet to be seen but something about it has to be decent for eddie especially to sign on

It was really underwhelming

i actually get both sides of the argument. At the time Richard did JoJo Dancer, it was after his movie production company was failing and missed opportunities, like passing on Purple Rain, and I think Richard was under pressure to produce a hit, so he did what he knew best and that was to play himself. But as i remember watching it, it did feel a little rushed and thin. None of the characters around him didn't seem to have any depth to them and the storyline seemed kind of thin also. Him catching on fire and having coke parties wasn't anything people didnt already know about Rich and it seem to fall flat.

I actually want to know more about the brothel he came up in, his dad and grandmom, and why they were the way they were. Maybe mention the kid he had at 16 and leaving the mother to chase stardom. His dating Pam Grier and marrying another woman without telling Pam. His manager who stole money from him and had to pay him back. How he started his own moving production company with Jim Brown. His trip to Oakland after he got fired from Las Vegas and being around the movement out there in the late 60s. Or why he stopped trying to emulate Cosby early in his career and decided to become Richard Pryor.

There is a plethora of storylines that JoJo Dancer didn't cover that i think will be very compelling to explore. Rich's life was so much more richer than he was able to show in JoJo Dancer, that he probably couldn't show for budgetary reasons or whatever.

Thats why i expect Lee Daniels and company to do this movie justice and show the real Richard Pryor and all the experiences and flaws that made him a comedic genius.

I remember watching a youtube of a roast they had for Richard in 70s and Rich being the funniest mf at his own roast. That man was such a genius. Unf*ckwitable.
