TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

This should be a celebration of a life well lived. He did it all with style, grace and impact.

We should all be so lucky to live such a great life and get to see so much of the fruit of your work at 96 years old.

Rest In Peace. You have earned it.

His voice was a powerful contribution to music just as it was to justice.

If anyone has the chance, this video of him speaking at a Town Hall on poverty in 2005 is very much worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKLz0mhGvKQ

"Is That Black Enough For You" where I learned he turned down an early role Sidney Poitier took, because he felt it unrealistic that a black man would even be in such a situation. Dude really cared about the image he was conveying to the public and tried to give us something to be proud of without doing corny, cookie-cutter movies. He was incredibly thoughtful about his Hollywood presence. I felt the pain he expressed when black folks didn't support "Buck and The Preacher" and how it made him realize he wasn't only fighting white people's perception of black people but also black people's perception of themselves. He wasn't just here to entertain at all costs. He was here to do it with integrity. If only many more of us could live so consciously.
RIP, brother.
