for example Last Star War movie had different splits from the happy meal and buying the toys standalone There was a set of toys that you could buy directly from mcdonalds outside of the happy meal happy meals toys was a 80/20 going to mcdonalds standalone was 60/40 going to lucasfilm lucasfilm had alot of input on the toys...and the toys themselves cost more than an average happy meal toy

I’m guessing that the movie studio pays some company to make cheap-as-shit toys and McDonald’s to carry them for the promo season. McDonald’s probably increases profits from mostly adult collectors buying the toys outright or actually buying Happy Meals.
The podcast host I’m thinking of said a lot of locations won’t sell the toys without the meal unless you get belligerent.
