"Question: When McDonalds advertises Eternals toys"
Thu Nov-04-21 03:58 PM by shockvalue

When McDonald’s advertises Eternals toys or similar promotional merch, who pays who? Does the studio pay Mcdonakds? Or vice versa.

McDonalds is advertising the movie, but they are also using the movie memorabilia to drive sales.

Could it be a push, with the two parties just splitting the profits? Anybody have any knowledge about this?

*I mean the profits from the toys, but I guess they might be free with a happy meal? Probably gets complicated then.

for example
Last Star War movie had different splits from the happy meal and buying the toys standalone
There was a set of toys that you could buy directly from mcdonalds outside of the happy meal
happy meals toys was a 80/20 going to mcdonalds
standalone was 60/40 going to lucasfilm
lucasfilm had alot of input on the toys...and the toys themselves cost more than an average happy meal toy

I’m guessing that the movie studio pays some company to make cheap-as-shit toys and McDonald’s to carry them for the promo season. McDonald’s probably increases profits from mostly adult collectors buying the toys outright or actually buying Happy Meals.

The podcast host I’m thinking of said a lot of locations won’t sell the toys without the meal unless you get belligerent.
