"Why do you think people are meaner on Social Media? "
People on social media are much more meaner than they are in person. And it's not because of social media's ability to provide anonymity. Because people are meaner two folks on social media and then will go out and see folk in person and will not even be close to exhibiting the same rotten behavior. It's like meeting a totally different person.
So what is it about social media to cause people to act a fool or just be a jerk to others?

low self esteem. It's easier to express their negativity online because they don't have to deal with face to face interaction and the ensuing consequences.

Natural selection trained us to empathise with the people we interact with, to build 'in group' behaviors that in turn will help protect us against the ill will of others.
But all that training happened when we only interacted with people in person.
It's also part of road rage.
Or so I would guess, it's really just a bullshitting-on-the-internet hypothesis. I have no idea whether there's much grounding for it in real anthropology or sociology. But I have heard it raised as a standard hypothesis for things like this.

My neighbor and I recently got into a very heated argument and the police were called. He is 6'2 tall, loud and as he was screaming at me, I felt my body basically shut down. I could barely respond. I realize that I have not had to do any real life confrontation since childhood.
Most of my confrontation is written, over the phone or online. It is safer and less in your face.
I am not sure that people are more mean but they can be more honest online.

A lot of people join social media because they see their friends getting X likes on the app, and then they see their friend following Y minor league social media celebrity on the app, and then they see how many people are following Z major league celebrity on the app...and then they glance at their lowly 100, 200 followers if they have any kind of platform, 10-50 real life friends if they don't, and they wonder, why am I not heard on this the way these other people are heard? What separates my equally valuable opinion from Skip Bayless or Tucker Carlson or Mary J. Blige or whoever it is.
So then they get loud.
There's also clear evidence that loud has worked for other people in the past. Whether good spirited like Desus & Mero or mean spirited like the Paul brothers, loud worked for some, so many assume it will work for them too. But they lack some basic charisma, or basic language skills, or basic humor, or basic other, and that loudness manifests purely as hate, and the more they get ignored the louder they get. Particularly if they gain a small audience that eggs them on.
I read an interesting article about the intersection of a lot of this sort of stuff recently through the lens of a well-endowed female video game streamer who basically turned herself into the Andy Kaufmann of video games for a period just to make fun of the people that were making fun of her for making fun of them.
