"OkFit Road Runners club"

I'm trying to get back into running, and I'd like to form a little support group. Anyone in?

We can share our goals/progress/setbacks.

Right now, I'm doing 1 or 2 treadmill runs a week, usually 3-4 miles. I'd like to do 2-3 treadmill runs at that distance and one road run of 6+ miles. I got a 7 mile road run in on xmas day at about a 9:30 pace.

At my adult (read 30+) best, I run 8:20 pace for 10k and 9:40 pace for half marathon (I've only done two). My short term goal is to get up to 16 miles per week at a sub-9 minute average pace. By the end of 2015, I'd like to be 20mi/week sub 8:30 average.

one thing I've learned is that this running shit is extremely mental. anything over 1-2 miles you really gotta push yourself(at least i do) cuz the whole time i'm thinking "why the fuck are you doing this?" lol

I am slow, but want to get better.

Thinking of trying to do at least a 10K this year, maybe a half.

I probably won't start running again until March though - too cold here and no access to treadmill. I will do my P90X3 until then.

I am trying to learn to love running - it is still a big chore for me, so I am not going out there in freezing weather and doing it.

But we will be lucky to be out of the mid-20's by March anyway.

former college runner...unsuccessfully trying to get some consistency back in my running. took a 13 year break after graduating college...was running about 4 times per week for about a year but now lucky to run once or twice a week. Only being able to run early morning (5am) on week days plus the crappy New England weather are my excuses for not running more. Was running 7:30 mile pace for a 5K over the summer but have lost a few steps and am now in the 7:45-8 minute mile pace range for a 5K.

I'll check it out
I think it would be cool if we can set up a group to track progress
Nike+ allows you to "challenge" your friends within the app but I think just a group would be a good no-pressure way to start.

but really just for the convenience of having distance and times and mile splits logged somewhere. I haven't really explored what else any of these apps can do.

My dad has run several though! lol

Naw if my toe wasnt broken, Im in good enough shape to run a marathon tomorrow (albeit at a shitty pace).

I ran 13 miles as part of the tough mudder 2 years ago -- and had few problems there. I didnt train with any mileage at all for that.

Im basing some of my training on this: http://www.outsideonline.com/fitness/running/The-Agony-and-the-Heresy.html

Im not trying to win a marathon. I just want to complete --it --its a bucket list thing.

Like I said I can finish a marathon right today if I wanted, but i do want to put in some semblance of training for one. I just dont want to waste hours running miles I don't need. I dont love running that much.

Based on the ease I had with the Jersey Mudder last year, I'm looking to do a half-marathon. Hopefully I will get a slot in the Brooklyn Half Marathon this year. My main goal is to run it without stopping, or at least stopping for too long for rest. One big difference with the Mudders and a regular marathon that freaks me out is that with the Mudder events, you have to stop since you have to wait your turn for a majority of the obstacles. There no stopping from what I see on running marathons.

I've run two half marathons now. I never got above 9 miles at a 10 min pace while training for the first one. I finished at a 9:44 pace. I didn't train for the second one at all (I registered 3 days before the race) and was able to finish.

and I've gotten back to light duty running.

trying to build back up to a 4 mile stretch. only really have time on the weekends so it'll be a slow process to get back. I'm hoping that my weight lifting will make it happen quicker.

I had the same thing happen to me after my son was born. Even when I did manage to get out for a run I'd get a guilt trip from my wife upon my return if baby woke up while I was away.

My son is a year and a half now but I've made the adjustment to running during break or if possible after work. Every week is different but I'm barely able to reach 20 MPW. Weekends are obviously more flexible but still not able to get in the "long" runs I was accustomed to before my son was born.

In response to Reply # 0

ChiRunning is a method of running which attempts to ease the potential of injury while running.

The teaching methods draw from Tai Chi and focus on mindfulness of breath and noticing body mechanics.

If you have a traditional running background, the information may help with noticing body mechanics and the like.

I would recommend the book, although I'm still about mid-way thru after putting it down for some time. The best tips are to build mileage by walk/run and to build mileage slowly - maybe a half-mile a week per run - to avoid unnecessary jarring to the body.

http://www.amazon.com/ChiRunning-Revolutionary-Approach-Effortless-Injury-Free-ebook/dp/B0026WNGBA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425499390&sr=8-1&keywords=chi+running

There's also ChiRunning.com.

No, I am not a paid spokesperson for ChiRunning.

hello. i use to run the wray and lay nike+ challenges and the pb (post bourgie) run challenge. i haven't done em since 2011 (got pregnant with my first...four years later i have 3 kids). I am trying to get back into running my 20 miles a week. I even got a triple jogging stroller. is there a hashtag for this? feel free to follow me on instagram (lakishalove) or myfitness pal (ladylovechild)
I am down to participate. I liked the pb run challenge because we had a google group with a spreadsheet that GD use to update weekly so that we could all see our goals. I am more than willing to start one up and keep it updated if there is interest?

I can get to a solid 2 miles and then I'm out.

I'd love to be able to run 20 miles a week. My goodness.

Any tips for building endurance and distance?

In response to Reply # 46

Walk for 5 to 10 minutes to warm up and then alternate 2 min of running and then 2 min. of walking. Then gradually build from week to week. Maybe a quarter of a mile at a time.

48. "you could try running at a track."
In response to Reply # 46

run whatever distance you can and add a lap to that. each weeek add another lap or two. it'll eventually build your stamina. I suggest the track because it might be easier to calculate the distance.

another option can be done at the track or street (treadmills suck). run for time rather than distance. add 2-3 minutes more time to your run at the point when you're normally exhausted. if you run 15 minutes, try getting 17-18 and work your way up to 20-25 over time.

nah, you trippin

I did 3 miles on Tuesdays
8 on Thursdays

Then fluctuated long runs on saturdays or sundays

Very time consuming.

I don't think I'll ever do an Ironman. I'm already not a true runner, but training for a full marathon plus the swimming and biking...not built for it. Half-tri is my new ceiling, lol.

Congrats! That's not a bad first marathon time at all; especially on 3 days a week and what seems like low mileage.
