"The OKP New York City Food Guide"
Fri Nov-14-14 12:57 PM by stankpalmer

What spots are essential to eat in when in NYC? Where do you take your friends when they come into town to visit? Where can I get a decent burger? Does pizza get better than Di Fara's?

Broken down by borough.

They make their own hot dogs, the knishes are the old school round ones cooked perfectly on their grill, and for a kosher deli, it's inexpensive.

BUT for another look you might want to check Barboncino in Crown Heights. Not the typical NY style but damn good with a number of options.

It's not your standard pizza- lots of experimentation with sweeter flavors and unusual toppings- but it's damn good. He's pushing the pizza envelope, and everything is incredibly fresh and made to order.

Plus Paulie himself will come out to your table and shoot the shit with you for a minute and ask how everything is. It's a good experience.

Ippudo and Totto ramen both opened around the same time, and my buddy joked that it started a "ramen war". I've only been to Ippudo, but it's without a doubt the best ramen I've ever had.

It's crazy popular tho, so be prepared to wait. Don't even try to go with more than a party of four. Best move is to show up a little before 5pm on a weekday and be one of the first people there when they open. There will already be a line, but you should get seated right away.

Bareburger (the original) - burger spot with like 8 different kinds of meats to choose from. 31st Ave and 34th Street

Sanford's - Best brunch deal in the city, imo. two alcoholoic beverages, coffee/tea/cocoa, plus anything off their amazing brunch menu for $16. Broadway and 31st street

Vesta - delicious seasonal menu, plus pizza and wine on tap. 21st street and 30th ave.

King of Falafel - winner of the Vendy award for best food truck in the city. Falafel, shawarma, kefta, etc. Broadway and 30th Street.

Rizzo's Pizza - an Astoria staple since the 50s, paper thin slices at a reasonable price. Steinway and 30th ave.

I'll post more when I can think of it.

I'm biased because I spent a semester abroad in Prague. But they have the legit Czech beers you rarely see in the US, plus they serve authentic Czech food- roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, goulash, etc. It's fun, plus the outdoor space is huge. Go when the weather's nice.

I'm coming that way in a few weeks and really want to go as it's consistently been rated as one of the best restaurants in the country. Plus I kinda have a food/personality crush on Eric Ripert. And a friend of mine is a chef there. What's the experience like? How's it compare to Jean Georges or Daniel? (I've been to both of those and really dug them...) I've already made a reso, but I'd love your feedback too.

Also, is Employees Only still worth checking out? What are the other cocktail bars worth exploring?

Also, who's got the good craft beer lists? One of the cool things about traveling is exploring the different local offerings.

Which Momofuku spot is the best value?

Is Pok Pok worth the wait for a table?

the atmosphere & staff can be a little.. "stuffier" than JG, Per Se, Daniel, etc., but the fare (imo) is the absolute best the city has to offer. beyond amazing

>Which Momofuku spot is the best value?

the OG noodle bar (although ma peche is decent for breakfast/lunch)

What's something specifically NYC that I won't be able to get nearly as good in Chicago?

I went there and to another spot called Potatopia if I spelled it right. The fries and 99 Miles were good and spicy, but a but too oily for my liking. The waffle fries and Potatopia weren't as spicy as the 99 Miles ones, but were nice and crisp. If you're curious, Potatopia is near the West 4th train station. Worth checking out because you can top the fries with a slew of extras sides and toppings there.

Han Dynasty
East Village
You want to try the Dan Dan noodles and any of the dry pot dishes. I love the Dry pepper chicken and kung pow chicken. Their stuff is mostly spicy so be prepared. This is my favorite Chinese spot in the city.

Perhaps the most affordable and least pretentious restaurant to ever win a Michelin Star. No joke.
