..we often talk about our rides (upgrades, issues, etc), but rarely mention our environment.

location: nyc (tri-state area)
average terrain: urban, greenways, heavy traffic
pros: diverse environment, best way to truly explore the nyc.
cons: congestion, pot holes, debri, road rage

i ride single speed/fixed gear (low maintenance, lightweight, durable).

flying through the mean streets of nyc is like playing an extreme game of frogger (with dire consequences). landmines (potholes) and road debri are always a challenge, but irate cab drivers and mini-van mobsters add an extra bit of danger to my everyday commute.

My terrain is similar to yours, bike paths, downtown streets and greenways. The road conditions here are better than NYC, not as many potholes and motorists are more tolerant of cyclists.

My bike is a Specialized hybrid with front suspension. Im able to lock out the suspension for cruising streets and then flick a switch if I need to have support on a trail.

I bought my bike late last year so havent done any upgrades besides a Lumina 550 light, and I also picked up a Birzman pump over the winter.

20min commute at a casual pace...16min if I go IN....

National Mall>Dedicated Bike Path>Residential Street>Home ...all UPHILL on the way back home.
50min if i'm solo...65min - 70min if I have the little one with me in the bike trailer... that joint HEAVY.

Long story short; got a new gig that's 20 minutes away from where I live and I want to get something simple to go to and from work. If price points are too much, what specific features should I look for? I'm in NYC and I'm 6'1, so I'm guessing my height will matter in terms of what type of bike I should get?

I haven't ridden a bike since I was in single digits, so I'm a bit out of my element. Please help me out, folks.

if you're in the market for something simple, there are plenty of options available. answering a few questions will help sift through that list and come up with the best fit for your current situation:

• gears vs single speed?
• road vs mountain vs cruiser vs hybrid?

quick break down:

gears allow for a variety of options (power, speed) during your ride (esp during steep inclines), but also requires a bit more maintenance. single speed (fixed gear or freewheel) requires a bit more endurance, but is extremely low maintenance.

the design of your components/frame will greatly impact your cycling experience. from steel (strong, sturdy, rigid), to aluminum or carbon fiber (lightweight, durable), you have a bevy of options. your choice should be made based on your level of experience, preference in weight, & the terrain you plan to tackle on a regular basis. road (sleek, fast, light weight), mountain (heavy, strong), cruiser (heavy, durable, moderate), or hybrid (cross between road & mountain, capable of traversing on & off road).

*while your height will never be an issue for choosing a particular style, it IS important that you seek a proper fitting for any style chosen. all bikes come in different heights, so finding the proper fit is essential. your local bike shop (LBS) should be able to assist in a proper fitting.

A fairly basic bike to get to and from work. A nice, simple entry level bike to traverse the pavement streets of NYC. Nothing too fancy.

..would be my best suggestion.

you can get a solid deal at almost any LBS (even cheaper if you're not crazy about specific brands).

*along with the bike, you'll need basic accessories:

• helmet
• a reliable lock
• lights

anything after that is up to your desired preference. however, i strongly recommend getting a proper fit (most LBS can provide this).

Spent Saturday and Sunday traversing various Brooklyn side streets to do some minor errands and make up for 20-30 years not riding a bicycle. I think within the next weekend or two I'll cross the Manhattan Bridge and ride around lower and mid Manhattan. Based on my experiences just attempting to walk across Brooklyn Bridge, I think I will definitely stay away from that option.

**edit**

I hope other folks will eventually enter this thread; feels weird just having a one-on-one conversation.

even the most experienced cyclist know its best to avoid the brooklyn bridge. its always a last resort for me.

if you check the other OkayCyclist threads in this forum, you'll see that there are quite a few cycling enthusiast here, but its still a relatively small community within the community. they'll likely turn up in the next week or so, with the official start of the season as spring approaches.

g'head and post up a pic of the new digs.

The only annoying aspect is the feeling of riding over the plentiful amount of potholes in the city, but I have the feeling that's something I'll have to get used to with this type of bike since it's not an designed for rough terrains.

What looks off to you or would you look to upgrade or alter?

..i only asked about upgrades because most people quickly discern that a few tweaks here & there make a huge difference for comfort/fluid functionality.

the landmines (potholes) of nyc will always be a challenging part of the environment, but your ride should handle it just fine. unfortunately drivers, pedestrians, & other cyclists/joggers make avoiding landmines even more difficult. keep your head on a swivel and ride swift.

2015 Kona Honky Tonk. Got a sick deal because it's last year's model.

This bad boy here: http://2015.konaworld.com/honky_tonk.cfm

So far, I'm loving it. This is my first road bike, and coming from a steel hybrid/ mtn bike, it's a world of difference. I shaved a few minutes off my commute and it feels more enjoyable to ride. The steel frame is good for soaking up bumps and whatnot. I also don't feel quite as wiped out at the end of my commute. I'm still getting the fit dialed in and getting used to going in and out of pedal straps. I guess clipless is in my future, but I'm not quite ready to make that jump at the moment. I'm hoping to do some epic rides in the future, in addition to the daily commute, and I feel like this bike is perfect for that.

Ride good, okp!

It was fun. Nice to cross the bridge again. I hate that because I'm in the financial district now it's extra time to take the Manhattan bridge so I opted for the Brooklyn. Going home I'll take the extra time. There's no way I'm hitting that God forsaken bridge after work.

I missed it so much. I refuse to take Brooklyn going home. Even coming in this morning was a little congested. I hit the bridge around 9 so by then you have a few people walking. Not ridiculous but they are there.

In response to Reply # 27

I haven't spent a huge amount of time riding on my bike, but I've noticed that drivers are much more aggressive in Manhattan compared to Brooklyn. Then again, I mainly ride on secondary and tertiary streets in Brooklyn, so that could be a factor. Has to stink you can't reliably ride the Brooklyn bridge since it's so close to the Financial district, but the tourists make walking on it a chore, muchless trying to ride a bike on it go get to work in a timely fashion.

..those same drivers exist in each borough.

however, when you factor in the amount of pedestrians that willingly ignore damn-near any/everything (walkin' while staring at their phones), you have a very challenging task of remaining up-right and out of harm's way.

that said, manhattan is manageable. yes, its fast & crazy in ways that most wouldn't imagine, but it doesn't take long to get the hang of it.

..that was a long, wet ride.

as always, thousands of cyclist from around the world showed up for the tour. the weather wasn't too bad in the am, but that steady rain took its toll as temps started to drop late afternoon.

only a few spills reported to far (not bad for a rainy day).

my crew finished @ 1:10pm with no incidents or problems.

shout out to the idiot driver that was determined to drive beyond the barricades in BK and onto the bike route (in front of nypd).

lol @ the volunteers still handing out frozen yogurt & popsicles @ the finish line & ferry, while everyone was trying to find ways to stay warm.

How much harder is it to go downhill on bridges when the roads are slick and I'm guessing the paths were somewhat congested since a good number of folks showed up despite the bad weather.

In response to Reply # 53

..inclement weather is something we all face at times.

the issue is that inclement weather exposes the fact that far too many people on the tour have absolutely NO EXPERIENCE riding in large groups, and most of them don't know (or adhere) to the rules of the road.

there were a few accidents, but nothing major reported. the 2 incidents i saw both involved inexperienced riders making horrible decisions (like attempting to take pics in the middle of the road).

the bottom line: you really need to know your equipment, terrain, and the rules of the road.

I saw an almost accident. Dude was gonna head over to the right for a break area while we were on the FDR but we were pretty center close to the left side. Instead of signaling and see who was coming ya man just starts to head over. I had to yell "Whoa" along with the folks being cut off by dude. He looked like an experienced rider so he should have known better.

like you said, most of the incidents involved people being inconsiderate. although i'm not sure how much more the organizers can do to bring awareness to things like that, since they have an ENTIRE handbook dedicated to everything you need to know about the tour.

they even covered some of those things on stage @ the expo.

I went to a shop near me that is a Trek dealer, so they had the new Trek Factory Precision Fit in there. It was about a three hour process, but they cover all the bases. Motion capture, video, saddle pressure mapping. Well worth the time and money. Made some changes that I could visibly see working before I left the store. Very happy with that move.

I mean, I guess if someone had the cheese for all the equipment they use. The program, the cameras, etc. You can obviously already do a basic fit at home with a yardstick, a plumb and the help of youtube, but I don't think there's any way to get that level of fit at home that I did the other day. They literally fixed like three problems with my pedal stroke just on the strength of us watching me ride on video. I ended up needing a shorter stem and a wider saddle as a result, but I would have never known on my own. Didn't say all that to shoot down your point, but that I just don't know how anyone could get all that without the equipment and a trained eye to assist.

I rode in today feeling great. Can't wait for work to be over. I might do a lap around Manhattan or at least up and down the West side. Loving it.

One annoying aspect to the recent weather is pollen constantly hitting me in the eyes. As much as I hate the thought, I might have to get sunglasses. Wouldn't mind getting some Kurt Rambis type goggles since I prefer the aesthetics of those compared to sunglasses.

..similar build to my current fixie. i've made quite a few upgrades since my initial build. currently shopping for the best stem (profile) for my bullhorns.

a few points to consider:

1. true that rear wheel. the current pic shows too much slack on that chain.
2. those tires are nice. if they don't hold up, you can get a great deal on gatorskins @ www.nashbar.com
3. you have a flip hub (and it appears you're riding fixed), why use the front brake? granted, using the rear tire to brake means more wear & tear on that tire. you also have the option to add rear brakes (comes in handy when you wanna ride freewheel).

I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm currently riding single speed. I wasn't ready to switch to fixed and commute. Need more practice. I'll probably go back to bullhorns though. I don't like these rubbers.

..in the past week, 2 friends (one of them from my bike crew) were unfortunately involved in hit & run accidents with uber drivers.

only one of them had a witness that was able to retain the plate number.

fortunately, the only serious injury was a separated shoulder (he's in good spirits). both bikes received minor damage.

i'm currently browsing for best options.

ride safe, swift, & aware.

I've recently switched my stance on helmets and I might just got 100% helmet. I always have one on when going to commuting but on the weekends I normally don't like to rock it. I'm worried about these drivers though. Think it's time for a new helmet.

On another note, just got my new gatorskin for my back wheel. It's time.

at $65 per tire, this could possibly be a game-changer.

while this isn't the first solid tire, the design & composite materials are a definite improvement.

curious to know your thoughts on this. WhatSayYou?..

..they only have one store in the U.S. (tucson), and they have them priced @ $65 per.

i'm really not sure why more LBS aren't pushing to carry more items that cyclist continue to inquire about? i understand that they can't compete with online prices, but its extremely frustrating when you want to get a true feel for products in person.
