"OkayCyclist: winter is coming!.."

..although the current forecast in nyc is 66 high/57 low, we all know winter is on the way.

as such, i know quite a few cyclist have already called it a wrap for the season and properly secured/stored their equipment for hibernation. still, there are those of us that brave the elements and continue to ride year-round.

• everyone still pushing pedals: what's your regional weather forecast?

• everyone in hibernation: what are your target upgrades this winter?

*btw: does anyone use parabolic rollers?

whatSAYyou?..

my bike is now fully disc braked up.
nice feel.
I can run a wider tire now too, which may come in handy if the weather ever declines.
REI stopped carrying the BEST WINTER RIDING PANTS EVER and I've been looking for a match....

http://www.rei.com/product/852905/novara-headwind-bike-pants-mens

The wider tires haven't had too much impact other than a little more surface area and tread for some portions of my commute that I have to cross dirt or gravel. 700x28 vs 700x23 that I used to run. The 23's do seem to have been a bit "faster"....but that could just be my imagination...because of course the addition of discs AND wider tires, beefier wheels, thicker tubes added weight..and it's likely that the extra weight is the major contributing factor to the perceived loss of speed.

The brake performance is WELL WORTH it for this bike though since it's primary use is commuting.

I almost have enough extra parts to build up a decent go-fast road bike now....

had to snatch the bike off the trainer and get out there. My next upgrade (really, addition) is a wheel set. I want to have a wheel set complete and at the ready in case of nice days during the winter. Saturday I had to swap back over to the regular road tire, as I had bought a trainer tire (trainers eat tires). That was annoying.

P.S. I am in the process of picking out some rollers. My buddy has them and I tried to ride them at his house...it's tough...you will fall. I felt like the first time I rode clipless, except x 100. Keep them in a doorway, because you're gonna fall. That said, they give you impeccable balance, overall bike control and confidence once you get good at them. He said it took him a legit month to get competent on them.

I've got it down...so from trainer to ready to head out, prolly 20 minutes. I have a Cycleops Fluid2 Trainer. You have to sinch the roller part of the trainer down against your rear tire pretty good. That's where all the wear occurs. If you pedal a lot, you'll body a regular tire fairly quickly.

temps take a dip this wkd (most notably, it'll be mid-40s during my group ride this saturday), only to climb back to 65-70º next week.

fun times, figuring out how many layers i need daily.

..with the official start of winter tmrw, the northeast finally felt a blast of cold air this wkd (44º/38º, w @ 11 mph).

not quite "the hawk" but certainly a force to be reckoned with.

wrapped a nice 35 mile ride with my crew yesterday that took us on a journey through brooklyn, manhattan, & new jersey. if you're ever in the mood for great breakfast food in nj, hit up Brownstone Pancake Factory (in edgewater & jersey city).

anyone else dare to brave the elements this wkd?

It was too warm.
Came back on assignment and left the rollers at home and then it was too cold. I think it was like 13 in Philly Monday night.
I did some quick sprints last night and tonight.
I don't know where I'm gonna get to do that in DC. But I'll just have to figure that out.

the other thing is the wear & tear on tires.

I'm in downtown silver spring. I can't easily get in an out of DC safely without ample sunlight.

Even today, I didn't ride in but I thought about riding; after five it'll be too dark though.

we'll see how they work out tomorrow.
Although my hands generally don't get too cold until the very end of my commute, on cold mornings I figure it would be nice to have my hands as least kinda cozy as the rest of my body.

I'm trying these as base layer:
http://www.rei.com/product/887942/novara-vigor-full-finger-bike-gloves-mens

and these on top to hopefully completely block the wind and provide some thermal contribution (they were on clearance for $10..couldn't pass em up..hope they work. Waterproof at the very least):

..they're working gloves (most commonly used by carpenters).

most gloves are thick to provide protection against the elements.

i like these because they're slim, form-fitting, with just enough protection to shield against the cold/wind.

..or lack thereof, when it comes to cameras.

while i recognize that evolution will lead to improvements, it sucks that we spend so much for hardware/accessories with limited growth potential. sure, the software updates are cool, but this reminds me of the early years of digital cameras (point & shoot). basically, its outdated 6 months after you purchase it. i'm sure most people have more than one digicam wasting away in a junk drawer/closet.

its bad enough we spend $500 on new phones every 2 years. i don't want to make this a habit with everything else.

i'm very practical about purchases. i can always rationalize the cost/usage, but i need to know that i'm not purchasing something that will soon be obsolete. i need to know that whatever platform/software used will be supported for years to come.

..with actual accumulation (just a dusting).

more than anything else, the unseasonably warm temps made for a bit of winter shock for most of the tri-state area over the wkd.

still, i was out & about on my bike friday & saturday, cuttin' through the wind like flynn. that is, until i was recently grounded by my dr. (unrelated).

looks like i may have to sit out the 1st storm of the season too

help me live vicariously through y'all in the meantime.

i might be getting this soon because there's a 20% off sale down the street. it's not too flashy, either. i like that.
it's warming up here, and i'm excited to start biking the 10 miles to work.

I really really want to get a lot more car-free over the next year. Looking into doing the xtracycle conversion and turning one of the bikes into a cargo. The heavier the little one gets....the harder the commute home with her is getting...which leads to less riding...leading to less exercise...leading to more fat..

After doing some research...my reservations about e-assist have been reduced greatly... I was always looking at it as "cheating"...but in reality...it's more akin to getting an extra hand when you need it... ie; on hills for me. Found some studies that pretty much outlined and proved that you were getting the same workout results with an e-assist, just faster... For instance...my commute to work right now is about 20-minutes inbound & 5 miles or so. It's mostly downhill so I likely wouldn't use the e-assist for that leg...but if I did, I could feasibly cut my commute in half to 10-12 minutes....IF I maintained the same cadence and effort that I currently expend.

The return commute home is around 7 miles and it's all uphill. That takes me about 45min. - 1 hour with the little one on board (she doesn't come with me on the morning commute in, just on the return commute). E-assist would help tremendously to tackle those hills on the way home and also reduce her exposure to heat and cold. right now, I pretty much can't commute with her during the winter or heat of summer. So I ride the bike in and we metro home or my wife drops the car off for me on her way to work and we drive home.

Cost is going to be the biggest hurdle to overcome. All in...i'm estimating about $3500 worth of equipment...which is a LOT when you think about it.

I bought Niterider Lumina 550. I havent tried them out yet but they seem really bright indoors and got great reviews online. Rechargeable through USB, 550 lumins and removeable.

..we often talk about our rides (upgrades, issues, etc), but rarely mention our environment.

location: nyc (tri-state area)
average terrain: urban, greenways, heavy traffic
pros: diverse environment, best way to truly explore the nyc.
cons: congestion, pot holes, debri, road rage

i ride single speed/fixed gear (low maintenance, lightweight, durable).

flying through the mean streets of nyc is like playing an extreme game of frogger (with dire consequences). landmines (potholes) and road debri are always a challenge, but irate cab drivers and mini-van mobsters add an extra bit of danger to my everyday commute.

whatSAYyou?..
