"Girls - Season 3"

aka "YT people shit"

I'm probably the only one who cares at this point

Episode 1 was better than episode 2

Episode 1 had a funny-weird cold open which would have been more effective if ol' girl actually WERE pregnant

Episode 1 also had Danielle Brooks (aka Tastee from OITNB) getting eaten out by Jessa

Oh, I also forgot that the actor who played Charlie jetted, I wonder how much his absence upset the apple cart

And Zosia looks like she lost weight

Loved that Lena gave Tastee and Amy Schumer some work. Amy KILLED in that scene BTW.

I actually LIKE the Charlie's character is gone. It was ridiculous to think he was gonna just fall for Marnie again. I hated that story line and I like seeing Marnie get her reality check. Being that we did that ALL last season tho, I hope they don't stretch it too far.

Adam's still the sociopath w/a heart of gold. he cracks me up.

That was very definitely a dorm room bunk, while Charlie's cubby thing was more to maximize space/make the bed separate from the rest of the apt.

Actually, reading that, I might be inspired by the vintage box spring idea.

I like his character, and felt sorry for him because he was clearly hurting over Shoshanna. But he reached emo-level 10 after their chat outside, and made a complete insufferable ass of himself. He needed to be knocked down.

Marnie needed to be punched in the face too. WTF at Marnie's comment about Hannah's appearance to her parents, "I keep telling her she can look like this everyday." Hannah was salty. lol Then she tricks Hannah into the karaoke duet, after Hannah told her earlier she didn't really like doing it...

And Adam's sister....smh

I think Ray needed a bit of a shake up. I enjoy his snarky ways, but they're also a deflecting mechanism, a way of distracting people from his own feelings of loserdom. He’s been hiding behind his snark. He’s struggled as an adult until recently, and I think his connection to Hannah and the others was his way of feeling like an adult amongst the children. He cares, he's straightforward with them, and has dropped some mental jewels for them to ponder, but he also finds amusement in them, and enjoys watching them fall on their face…..like children or pets.

That scene in the first episode this season of Ray smiling evilly like the Grinch as Adam (and Hannah) gets chewed out by those two women was HILARIOUS. He loved it. And he also looked safe and judgmental back behind the counter.

But in this episode, people were able to penetrate his shield. His boss, Hannah’s boss, Adam’s sister, Shoshanna and her date…

And if anything, Hannah’s boss shows just how disconnected and contrasting Ray is from everyone else. Ray's the cranky old man upset that times have changed, while Hannah's boss is fully immersed in “the now”, from his support of Hannah, to the way he was dressed, the coke, Grindr, his interruption of Ray’s Smashing Pumpkins song with LMFAO, to his reactions to Ray’s verbal aggression. He gave no fucks at all. Lol

Sure, for Ray, it was a series of “kick me while I'm already down” moments, considering his struggles over Shoshanna...But I think he needs to understand that the world is much bigger than the one he's constructed in his head, and he needs to step out of his shell as well.

22. "this show has turned into a sitcom."
In response to Reply # 0

i didnt like season 1 at first but then realized that i didnt like it cause it was almost too much like the people in my life and where i grew up. it wasnt a fun watch but i grew to appreciate it.

the second season was severely disappointing and not in line at all with the characters lena and jenni wrote in season one. everyone became weird and redundant.

the third season i seem to liking most of all. but for the wrong reasons. the show for once is...funny. which isnt necessarily a good thing. this show has absolutely zero ideas what to do with half the characters...maybe all of them! jessa is absurd. marni...jeez marni would never step foot into a brooklyn dive bar like Matchless. she wouldnt even be friends with these people.

hannah is...boring. which is not good for what was a complex character in season one, and then suffered from severe OCD inexplicably. somehow they made her boring this season.

Adam is a talented guy (the actor) but his character makes no sense in season 3. this guy is sociopathic but every other scene he's as boring as hannah.

the only characters i find interesting are Ray and Shoshana. Shoshana is by far the most realistic depiction of the type of girl Mamet is playing. It's uncanny how well she owns this role. This show should be following her. And Ray is not given much to work with but he's never uninteresting. And that pays off huge in this show.

I think Lena needs to cut this show after next season. I know its been renewed for season 4 and that should be the last. She's so talented but she's outgrown this show. It's time for her to take a leap. This isn't it anymore.

Back to what I said at the beginning. This show is funny 3 ep''s into the season. Its following an almost sitcom-like formula. I find myself laughing at this show for the first time. I'll keep watching for the laughs at this point.

i think yall are putting more into the relationship than there was
think of it as a A&R type of relationship
he was fostering her talent
but mainly to benefit off of it
and his guidance was questionable at times

if the tables were turned i dont see him giving much of fuck beyond
damnit she would have been a contender and >>I<< discovered her
and maybe i can try to publish what she did so far...

but still not as funny as season 1.

i think it's interesting to gradually discover that hannah is an OCD sociopath....she's not a sympathetic character at all. not likable, and it's not clear to me why her friends like her, except for the fact that they're fucked up, too.

the scenes where jessa finds out that her friends lied to her and said her "best friend" was dead in order to get her out of their lives were hilarious. this show is so disconnected from reality it's hilarious.

shosh might be the only sympathetic character on the show. she's the only one of the girls who isn't completely self-absorbed.

marnie & hannah deserve each other. i don't like her. maybe ray smashing will change her life lol

adam is my fave character tho. isn't he everyone's?

a) She's probably gotten excellent grades throughout her schooling and b) she has everything planned and figured out already, and other people don't (especially the "friend" cohort she's been thrust into by taking in her cousin). The line she has at Hannah's birthday about how they "haven't accomplished anything" is particularly telling.

this episode i guess she realized what she did by putting herself in with these ladies
its definitely not what she thought it was going to be

would be interesting to see if her bubble is burst once she gets out into the world

Weird because she was maybe my least favorite character the first two seasons.

But I loved her killing it in that meeting, even if it eventually left her crying at her desk. I also liked her being the one to point out how the corporate gig has allowed all of these people to let their dreams die (even though she doesn't realize the same thing's about to happen to her.)

- Marnie and Ray are so terribly sad and great for eachother. The realest moment in the entire show wasn't Hanna's crying, it was Ray telling Marnie "Because you don't have anyone else to eat with, and neither do I" That speaks to the crux of their relationship to start but not what it might become. She got Ray to sit down and watch reality TV! Why you ask? because that dude is lonely as fuck, and He's playing in the league on a 10 day contract and he knows it. He's trynna pull a Jeremy Lin while Carmelo is injured. I love Ray, and his little bit of Swag on super Spy Sosh was fantastic.

- I don't agree with my guy when it comes to Hanna being stronger, respectfully. She's just doing what she's wanted to do. She's no stronger or weaker than at any time in the show. We're just seeing a part of her that we haven't seen before. She's a creative girl who writes well, but she's horribly self obsessed. The real life decision of letting that dream die and paying that rent was so real. I loved it. Your bf don't bring any money in the house, he trynna sell dream catchers on etsy for $20, yea you better not shit on that GQ money.

- Sosh is a child and at somepoint (maybe not in the shows run) she'll understand you don't always get to control every aspect of your life. She's highly entertaining though.

- Jessa is the least interesting character to me at this point, but most of that probably has to do with Jemima recently giving birth when they shot the first part of this season.

- All in all its entertaining but gawd these people suck

They make going to bathroom difficult. I can't deal with that shit any longer.

The thing is, it only takes ONE real serious life event where they did everything "right" and for it to not work out to completely blow up this world view.
I've witnessed two, one has never recovered, like she's no longer as efficient a worker and the other pretty much said fuck it, i'm going to be the queen B until they lost the contract and had to eat all of it. She's a changed person whom i've come to genuinely enjoy. Its a shame her whole life had to fall apart before she got here though.

I was laughing the whole episode with her rocking the bikini the WHOLE time while everyone else was fully dressed.
I know it plays into how self-centered and narcissistic her character is but I thought it was hilarious.

Good episode. The after dinner scene was great and its funny
how Drunk Sosh was pretty much a female Ray.

And LOL @ the dudes quietly filing out in the background when the shit was going down.

And it's sad for it to take an episode where the girls kick it in a loaned house not in the hamptons with a bunch of gay dudes for me to realize that.

It reminds me of people I went to college with that I found annoying and I chose not to hang out. Why would I watch a show about those people?

That being said I can also recognize that this recent episode was quality storytelling.

That's not the point, the point is to watch them work through their relationships.

- I just watched Shoshanna gut everyone in the room and then drop the mic and walk out. I love me some shosh. Here's the thing about her character, she comes off as ditsy, but that's more in the way she talks and the way she relates, but in actuality she's the one peeping everything but still manages to have an entirely separate life from the rest of the group. How many other times have you ever heard anyone else acknowledge a real friendship outside of the group? Shosh does it offhandedly from time to time. She has other friends and other people to compare these people against. So she knows their terrible. Yet she still loves them.

- Ya'll can't really be mad now, Jemima got naked this episode too.

- Marnie was a half step away from basing up on them dudes when they were talking about Ray. Then she had to recognize, "If I amp on these dudes then that means I half way care about this dude, and I don't care about that dude, so I can't amp, but I have this feeling I don't like people talking about Ray like that. This some bullshit, let me get more wine"

- I know we're all supposed to think Hanna is pushing the boundaries of unattractiveness, but she's not ugly. Weirdly shaped, ABSOLUTELY but she's not an ugly woman. Like I know that we're supposed to really lean on the fac that she's not beautiful and overweight or whatever, but really like Shosh said she's just a Narcissist.

- I love Elijah and Hanna's relationship. Their ex's in so many senses of the word. As lovers, and friends their ex's but they are still close. They'll always be attached in some way, and that dynamic is always pretty cool to watch, because there's genuine love between those two.

- Shosh said what the Audience thinks about all of them. OOOOOOHHH KILLEM

This is a show about 'villians' It took a while for us to get it, but I think we all do know. We're not SUPPOSED to like them. MY question is whether or not they'll grow or we'll just get to see how they walk through the world.

The thing about Sosh is, I don't think she realizes she's just as bad as they are. The shit she pulled on Ray, this new boy crazy binge, negotiating terms DURING sex. She's a terrible person. There's a reason there are no black characters on this show. 1.) We keep it WAY too real for this, 2.) A black character THIS bad would be TOTALLY unwatchable for 99% of america. I'm glad she's kept 'us' out of this one.

>
>- Ya'll can't really be mad now, Jemima got naked this episode

Meh, she been naked - it was nice tho.

>- Marnie was a half step away from basing up on them dudes
>when they were talking about Ray. Then she had to recognize,
>"If I amp on these dudes then that means I half way care about
>this dude, and I don't care about that dude, so I can't amp,
>but I have this feeling I don't like people talking about Ray
>like that. This some bullshit, let me get more wine"

Yo, I'm telling you, there relationship is gonna be a GOOD thing for her, and him. It might all end HORRIBLY - in fact it probably will, but I think they're BOTH gonna come out of it changed for the better.
>
>- I know we're all supposed to think Hanna is pushing the
>boundaries of unattractiveness, but she's not ugly. Weirdly
>shaped, ABSOLUTELY but she's not an ugly woman. Like I know
>that we're supposed to really lean on the fac that she's not
>beautiful and overweight or whatever, but really like Shosh
>said she's just a Narcissist.

Nah, she's not ugly - realtalk: a couple posters on this thread RIGHT NOW, got a couple of Hanna's either in the roster or in their past. See her EW cover - she aite - she makes a POINT to look as bad as possible on TV. I dig it. I get TIRED of it, but I dig what she's trying to do, she's moving the movement right now.
>
on a sidenote: my FAVORITE scene of the ep was when shit started getting real and how AWL the gay dudes, quickly and quietly left the room. I had to rewind it, it cracked me up so bad.

The Jessa character is so "worldly" it's weird that she's not naked more often. Maybe an equal or just-slightly-less percentage than Lena.

LOL that Shosh has a full and rehearsed response for why it SEEMS like she's on coke all the time.

Patti Lupone KILLED it activating Hannah's anxiety.

Elijah's "I'm not a fan of One Tree Hill except for watching every episode" and joining in on the song with Desi and Marnie.

Marnie jocking Desi SO HARD and then not getting that "My Clementine's making paella" was "I have a girlfriend."

Soo Jin's vocal fry was nails on a chalkboard, but that whole interaction was SO great.

In response to Reply # 0

i started watching at the end of season 2
and then i went back and watched season 1.
i will say lena durham and the writers are good.
example adam's sister caroline spilled between
her and lena's character. damn!

season 1 problematic
lack of diversity on the show.

season 2 problematic
forced diversity

season 3 season still in session

ok see the point, but there is an
underline parallel between girls
and girls of color. yes majority
of black girls (girls of color)
should know they will have to
work 2x, maybe 5x as hard as
the average white girls, depending
on their class station in life but
the 20 something types are there.

In turn talking about her own marriage

That was a wow moment
Which Hanna brushed off a bit too quick
But I guess it hurt and felt like a quick judgement
But she saw that situation right away
Which was weird considering how social Adam tried to be and how antisocial Hannas family was

It's weighing on her. That's what grandma dying was about in the end.

That exchange where she and grandma were talking about 'people are wrong sometimes.' It was a parallel between the doctor's diagnosis of grandma dying and Hannah's mom's diagnosis of her relationship dying. Grandma defied the odds and Hannah's gonna do it too.

Then grandma dies, reality strikes and Hannah gotta deal with that shit.

Seemed like everyone's fatal flaws were on display.

Hannah's insistence on doing whatever in her relationships without talking about it (with the person with whom she has the issue) first.

Marnie's overexpectations (i.e. that Soo-Jin was going to offer her a director job this far along into the process of opening the gallery, and that Desi would be giving her a little more than songwriting tips).

Adam's tendency to focus on his shit over-intensely.

Shosh's insistence that everything can be fixed or planned for.

And Jessa's general messitude.

Only one of the main characters we didn't see with a flaw on display was Ray.

I think its no coincidence why Ray is the most likable character considering he's the oldest. He seems to be at the point in his life where he wants to be a responsible adult. Meanwhile, the other characters are fumbling around like infants.

Now it seems like she is actively out to hurt people. I wonder if this is Lena Dunham's working out her issues with traditional pretty girls.

Poor Shosh

^^^^ The only "likable" character on the show, btw

How'd I figure that the ol' lady would change her mind about killing herself?

And Hannah's breakup with Adam was kinda like eh. But I mean, he *did* ask her to stay away... her news about Iowa really could have waited until after the show, b. Money needed his focus.

And Marnie is probably the best heel on television. Seriously, Vince McMahon should be calling Lena Dunham and asking for permission to use the character at WrestleMania this year.

This was a solid season.

That said, I'm intrigued in where next season is heading. I hope this is it for Adam and Hannah; I'm interested to see what Iowa is going to bring her. And I hope Shoshana actually develops as more than just "the young/naive one."

Lets take em line by line.

The show as of late has had fun playing “lets torture Marnie” but that doesn’t pass for character development particularly since they are hinting that she's getting rewarded for being a horrible person by getting the apple of her eye(similar to what would have happened last year if the character Charlie didn't bolt after the writers put them back together).

You could have argued that Hannah was at least attempting to transition with a ‘real’ day job and a book (while supporting a boyfriend’s rent) at the beginning of the season. However all that imploded with how she handled the book deal falling through & her quitting her job with a tantrum simply because her boyfriend wanted to have a life outside of their relationship. She purposely popped up and sabotaged Adam's debut, and what's great is that after they 'broke up' it showed that she really didn't give a fuck, as usual it was all about her.

Jessa, lol. I just blame more bad writing than anything else. At least with her character, unlike Marnie, you saw where she got her selfish behavior from (pops) and how alone she feels because of it, and how it affects the others outside of her. You see the cycle play out.

Which leaves Adam, Rey and Sosh.

Rey and Sosh I give the nod only because
1)They were too busy “living” their real lives to fall into the other’s drama
2)They are self-aware enough to call out the others on their stuff AND when told their stuff doesn’t stink to recognize it.

Adam has shown growth (particularly during the roleplay episode and he had to break down to Hannah how he changed as far as his feelings towards acting/their roleplay is concerned). Mind you, this doesn’t necessarily even make him a nice person, but at least he's changed over the years and hasn't stayed the same insufferable fuckbot neanderthal he was originally.

There’s nothing wrong hanging with horrible people making the same horrible mistakes; shoot some of the best shows of the past 5 years worked strictly in this realm (Mad Men, etc). But it just feels like I am watching the same car wreck over and over with motherfuckers making the same mistakes. At least Don switches suits and wives.

People just out of college and trying to figure out how to begin their adult life don't grow at all?

For as seriously as this show takes itself as being the voice of a generation and trying to provide social commentary, none of the characters learn from their mistakes and they're all unsympathetic narcissists. If we were talking Broad City, you'd have a point, but this show focuses on the drama yet avoids consequences or character realizations.

Dunham disputes this in every 3 minute post mortem she does after

>Which, as is clear now, is besides the point; these characters
>are not really supposed to "grow" or "learn lessons" or
>"suffer consequences"

In each of those vignettes its all about character character character. Let's take Darth Marnie for instance; after she hit on dude the first time Dunham said along the lines of "Now she's learned that she doesn't have to sleep with him, the pressure is off" (paraphrased)

This last episode? "She's going to have to realize it won't be that easy for him to make a clean break from the girlfriend"

LOL.

How we gonna go from her learning that she doesn't have to fuck someone she's attracted to just because to her fucking that dudes relationship up cause she HAS to fuck/date him.

For Sosh she broke down her whole character arc (which I thought could have been better on page, but thats another story). She thought she could party, go to school, and that Rey would wait on her/be a backup...she was wrong on all points. She gave her a full arc this season, consequences and all. When you add up what Dunham has explained about wtf is going on with Hannah, Marnie etc...it doesn't add up compared to Adam, Sosh, Rey.

Its like, I like the show, I watch the show, I love watching my evil narcissists be it ex-schoolteacher meth dealers, impeccably dresssed chef-psycharatrist-cannibal-serial killer, or a fat mafia don from Jersey. My gripe on the show is less about, "THIS SHOW SUCKS" then wondering some of the choices they made since I don't think they want them to come off as the above.

Finally, don't you move the goalposts on me nigga! First it was like, "25 year olds don't grow". Now it's "The show isn't about that", lol. I SEE YOU ZOO.

Never said they were inconsistent. Just said the peripheral characters actually have arcs where they shift/learn/move on from (even if they relapse*)...

Of course you can't have a whole "Wonder Years" voiceover where Hannah talks about how she's learned her lesson, etc.

But it's intereresting how the peripheral characters (Rey, Adam, Sosh since they unfortunately fuck her with screentime) have arcs where they come out the other side at least changed...none for the main characters.

So yeah, Rey's spouting that "yo, im mature now" while still falling for pretty pussy, particularly his ex-girls good friend's pretty pussy, but at least it's a new mistake and he's no longer sponging off his ex's

So yeah, while Adam still has horrible interpersonal skills (how he left his ex literally hanging/how bady he deals with Hannah now) he very eloquently broke down why their sexual/regular relationship changed in that roleplay episode.

I discussed Sosh's change above.

I don't expect Hannah to sudddenly learn to not be a psycopath, but now it's going on 4 seasons of her passive aggressively dealing with her friends and showing absolutely no sympathy to anyone that's not her...etc. She couldn't even figure out why she was supposed to be sad that her publisher died...which is good for yucks but makes it problematic when there's a scene where lets say Adam is being 100% wrong (when he was ignoring her after she got blasted drunk and ain't come home) and im laughing at her, lol.

So you just gonna ignore that final shot of season 3 in the name of "No Growth or Change-y Like Substances for Hannah = FUCK THIS SHOW!!!!," huh? lol

>So yeah, Rey's spouting that "yo, im mature now" while still
>falling for pretty pussy, particularly his ex-girls good
>friend's pretty pussy, but at least it's a new mistake and

When was the last time he "sponged off an ex?" The end of season 2? TWO FUCKING YEARS AGO?!?!?! Are you really REACHING BACK that far to make some argument that See Ray Has Changed But Since Hannah Has Not FUCK THIS SHOW?

And even in the context of this season, Ray ain't fucking change. That nigga was being condescending and PETTY AS FUCK when he was telling Shosh how much he "grew" from being with her. One clue was the fact that he was using 10-dollar words like "jettisoned" when he was talking to her. And did you see the shit-eating smirk as he watched Shosh beg to get back with him, or nah?

FOH with, "Yeah, he was bonin' Marnie but HEY AT LEAST HE 'CHANGED' UNLIKE HANNAH SO FUCK THIS SHOW!"

>So yeah, while Adam still has horrible interpersonal skills
>(how he left his ex literally hanging/how bady he deals with

>sexual/regular relationship changed in that roleplay episode.

And then he reverted RIGHT BACK to Asshole Adam right after his performance, which he said sucked and he also blamed on Hannah. Which kinda-sorta renders his "eloquent" words moot, does it not?

>I discussed Sosh's change above.

It's interesting that this "change" that you're hanging your hat on only came after she flunked out of school and also found out that Marnie had been busting it wide open for her ex.

But SEE "CHANGE" HAPPENED TO SHOSH BUT NOT HANNAH SO FUCK THIS SHOW!, right?

You call it "change," I call it "desperation," or "falling back into old habits when you life throws you a few curveballs and you don't yet know how to react."

>I don't expect Hannah to sudddenly learn to not be a

All I know is Larry David never changed, and this show is very much in the same "Cringe Comedy" vein as that show, or Seinfeld. Plus Larry old as fuck. So why young Hannah gotta "change" and "grow" and "learn tough lessons" and "suffer consequences" for y'all niggas, man? Why?

They automatically tack it on at the end of the episode without even really a pause. Seems live HBO and dem torrents skip out on it.

I REALLY think it needs to be a part of the regular show since it does give you a clearer perspective where Dunham was coming from, especially since they are two minutes tops. However, by my rants, seems they raise as many questions as they answer, lol.

man i completely miss those
LOL
i can see where you would get the impression though if Lena is sitting there telling you
but i got more of the navigation impression said below than actual growth
real growth takes time oh and effort and acknowledgement
i mean Adams reaction was a huge step back for him
and he seems to be the most emotionally progressive character on there

In response to Reply # 129

I was hoping nobody would bring that up and I guess ZooTown smartly edited it out. Seinfeld was a sitcom that never took itself seriously and (I forget the term for it now) you could watch any episode without regard for season/character arc.

My main issue with Girls is it doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a comedy or a drama show? If it's a comedy it shouldn't focus on drama like Hannah's OCD and if it's a drama it should show character development and growth. I actually started to like this season because Hannah was showing signs of recognizing her issues, but then she forgets that and goes off the deep end these last couple of episodes.

It's only critically acclaimed (and passionately defended on here) because it appeals to the current trend of SWPL hipsters, Williamsburg yuppies, political overcorrectness, and whatever wave feminism.

By the way, I saw you argue in the True Detective thread that there are no positive female characters in it (which I disagreed with) so I hope you can recognize how pathetic a character they made your boy Charlie, which is the reason why he left the show.

Her self-centered, delusional, narcissistic character.

Why are people taking it seriously and applying it to the show and Lena Dunham?

Some of y'all have the strangest reactions to this show.

>'Girls' producer Judd Apatow looks back on season 3

How did he see Hannah's story for the year? And why does he think the show inspires such extreme reactions?

BY ALAN SEPINWALL MONDAY, MAR 24, 2014 10:30 AM

HBO's "Girls" concluded its third season last night. I was able to get on the phone with executive producer Judd Apatow for a few minutes to talk about the finale and season 3 as a whole. Apatow's thoughts coming up just as soon as I have a credenza and a cactus plant...

Going into season 3, what were you trying to accomplish thematically in terms of Hannah's story?

Judd Apatow: We wanted to explore what happens when your life crashes while your boyfriend's life gets better and better. So we were interested in how the relationship would get more complicated as Adam begins to mature. Life always throws you big curveballs, and sometimes the person who believes in you as a writer dies, and you lose the right to the book you've been writing. We wanted to show what happens when she's given very real obstacles. The obstacle isn't just not being able to get a job, it's losing your mentor and having your path crumble before you. And sometimes that does happen when the person that you're in love with is having the best moment of their life.

Hannah has problems early and she has them again late, but there's a stretch in the middle of the season where things are going very well between her and Adam, and where she has this comfortable job at GQ, and compared to where her friends are at the moment, she's doing really well.

Judd Apatow: We wanted to have her be tempted by corporate America. She spends years trying to live a creative life, and often you get opportunities which take you off of your path. It's very easy in life to take the job with the great snack room and the good salary and not pursue your ambitious creative dreams. So we wanted to see what would happen when Hannah is offered money to not do what she wants to do.

Early in the season, you introduced Gaby Hoffmann as Adam's sister Caroline. She caused a lot of problems and exposed an ugly side in Hannah before she left. What was the purpose in that story arc?

Judd Apatow: As soon as you start a relationship, you are also starting a relationship with your boyfriend or girlfriend's family. We thought it would be fun to see where Adam comes from. A lot of times, the person you care about has an insane relative that is not only hard to deal with but also makes you nervous, because you wonder what the significance of that is for your relationship. If that's how the sister acts, is that in him. Also, Hannah is an only child, and she has to deal with a sibling relationship, which she doesn't really understand, because she doesn't have that relationship. Also, it shows both positive and negative sides to Adam's character. Life is complicated. There are moral choices to be made. Adam has to decide how supportive to be to his sister when she's really erratic.

Near the end of Caroline's stay in the apartment, there's that scene where Hannah repeats her fake dead cousin story almost verbatim to Adam to get him to lay off her about not grieving enough. And the response to that from some viewers was that we were maybe seeing Hannah turning into a sociopath before our eyes. Was that the intention there?

Judd Apatow: I think that moment was about Hannah thinking, "I'm not gonna be what he wants me to be. The more he gets to know me, the less he's going to like me." It's really more about a self-esteem issue. She's very concerned about her future and her work, and for some reason, that is taking precedent over mourning the death of her publisher. She can sense that Adam does not think it's okay that she's not devastated by his death. She's self-involved, so she's really worried about losing Adam, and feels that she has to show this sensitive side of herself to him, or he's going to think there's something wrong with her. She's so in her head that she can't seem to feel anything at that moment. So it's not about being a sociopath than about having low self-esteem and feeling like your boyfriend is trying to get to know you and decide you're not good enough.

Season 1 ends with Hannah chasing Adam away and him asking her, "What the fuck is wrong with you?" Season 2 ends with him running to her rescue after she has a bad OCD relapse. Season 3 leaves them in a more ambiguous place, where he's obviously not happy that she told him this news on opening night, and that she might be moving away, but where we close the season on the image of Hannah smiling and looking very pleased with the possibility of going to Iowa for this MFA program. What were you trying to accomplish with that closing sequence?

Judd Apatow: I don't know if we have all of the answers to that. She's trying to figure out what's right for her. And in this moment, or on that specific day, making the decision to go to graduate school feels right. But I feel like at that age, one's opinion about things can change every half an hour. So it remains to be seen, the significance of all of those moments. But she's definitely out of sync with Adam. I think that happens to a lot of couples. People's ups and downs aren't always perfectly in sync, and they're having a big problem with that.

How different was it this year doing 12 episodes instead of 10? You had more story to work with. Was that ultimately more satisfying, or more difficult?

Judd Apatow: I am a big fan of doing more episodes. Unfortunately, most of the shows on HBO are 10 episodes, so I think we will be doing 10 next year. We don't line up with anybody when we do 12. That's why we double-pumped episodes at the beginning of the season and it's why there's no one around us (at the end). I am a fan of shows being on the air for a long time so we can talk about them every week and are part of our lives. The idea that they pop up and disappear very quickly, I find disturbing. I think we'll go back to 10 episodes next season, but I think this season benefited from having more. You can go deeper into the ideas you're expressing.

The show is called "Girls," but Hannah is very much the main character and her story takes precedence over the others. This year, you had Jessa have a problem with substance abuse, and you had Shoshana fall off a different sort of wagon with how she blew things at college, but those stories didn't get as much play as what was happening with Hannah. Do you feel satisfied with how you told some of those supporting character arcs?

Judd Apatow: Every season is different. I haven't looked at the season to think about math. I'm very happy with what we've done with all of the characters, but I don't really have an opinion about it, because I haven't watched probably it in the way you watched it. I watched it separately and over long periods of time, so I don't have a sense of how it all added up.

Finally, you know as well as I do that this is a show that gets an insanely strong reaction. It's just about the only show I write about where it's not enough that the people who don't like it don't like it, but that they get angry that it even exists. They get angry at Hannah and everything she does, and compared to so many of the other leading characters on cable of this period, Hannah is held up as the worst of the worst. What do you think it is about this show you're making that inspires that kind of reaction?

Judd Apatow: I think that's good, because it shows that it's hitting people's buttons in a very personal place. Look, you don't get mad about somebody being naked unless you have some issues with your own nakedness or your own sexuality. You don't get mad if you think people are spoiled or self-entitled unless something has happened to you in your life that makes that an issue. I think people sometimes forget that we know what happens in this show, and we're very aware of the reactions it elicits, and most of the time, it's on purpose. It's supposed to be about people making mistakes and learning how to navigate their lives, and a lot of it is cringe-y, but if you followed me around all day long, it would be a cringe festival that you would not believe. I think it affects people both positively and negatively because it feels very familiar. These aren't people living in a fantasy world. They're having similar lives to an enormous amount of people. People think, "That could never happen, 'cause it didn't happen to me!" But that just means people care. Even if they're attacking it, they're paying attention to it. It reminds me when people thought Seth Rogen could never get a woman like Katherine Heigl. You walk down the street, and almost every beautiful woman you see is with guys who look like me and Seth. At the time, that really bothered some people. So it usually is more of a litmus test for the viewer than it is about the show.

That S3 was hands down the best season of this show so far? I feel like this is the year it at least started to approach the hype it was given when it premiered.
