It wasn't bad enough to sink the show but I'm not sure they can get away with it with The Flash, who is kind of a cheesier character. This season of Arrow has been pretty great but I'd love a few episodes shorter so they didn't have to stretch stories quite so much and so that they have more time to punch up the dialogue.

Walk, don't run. It ain't that hot...

They really tried to do too much in too little time. Should've had a 2 hr premiere to be able to do that much world building. I see some obstacles their gonna have to hurdle (I can't stop the runner puns!) in the future if they want this show to work. Namely, they're gonna have to find a way to stage their battles to be more compelling than this one ended up. I feel like the scope that's needed might be too big for television. Though who knows, the middle confrontation was headed in the right direction, until they just gave up on it.

I hope now that they kind of established everyone's base motivations, they can just move on to making these characters seem like real human beings instead of cliched tropes.

But I also think Arrow sucks, so I didn't know how it would stack up to someone who wasn't me. Most people seem to be raving about it, though.

Cheesy dialog. Soap opera acting. Unnatural plot-driven behavior. Plot. 'It's time to think big.' Floating word clues borrowed from Sherlock. Iris never heard of Dropbox because we need cheap stakes for this scene. Jesse L Martin's hairline. Manufactured inorganic conflict. OK, now they're cool again.

I dunno. The writing's just so simplistic and cliche-ridden. But I can accept that I'm probably just out of this CW superhero loop.

I'm a DC Stan, though, so I hope it's successful even if I ain't feeling it. Like Arrow, which I'm glad other people enjoy.

I'm hoping that the pilot is reshot after CW and DC Comics execs sit down and took a hard look at it prior to the writers room writing episodes (which should have started in April/May) and them actually shooting the show next month (Arrow starts shooting season 3 after the holidays and I would assume that The Flash is on a similar timetable) because so MUCH work needs to be done for this to be SOLID.

a few things:

the shitty dialogue. And Arrow's dialogue was horrid the first season but it is improving..slowly.

i'm oddly not as sold on Grant Gustin as The Flash as I was before. I could have gone for a slightly older Barry Allen and honestly, I wasn't impressed with his acting when he popped up on Arrow and I didn't care for Stephen Amell outright. But I'm sure Grant will grow on me and that will be fine.

the rest of the cast is great....

but the plotting? ugh....

But they have plenty of time to fix things or START to fix the shittiness of the plot during the season....

SO we'll see. I"m REAL damn cautious because there are A LOT of new shows premiering this year that have WAY better pilots than the flash (I see you NBC's State of Affairs, CBS' Stalker, ABC's Secrets and Lies *AND* How to Get Away With Murder (though black power purists will be ANGRY at Viola....yes lawd they is gon be ANGRY with her) etc. that I can afford to *NOT* watch any hyped new show that's not on point with theirs...

there is always, always, an element of cheese with The Flash stories/incarnations i've seen over the years (beginning with the OG series that starred John Wesley Shipp, also an awesome idea casting him as Barry's dad, i almost thought they would end up connecting both series' in terms of continuity, but that'd be way too cool to be real lol). dialogue got pretty predictable in some spots, Barry visiting his dad in jail should've been a nice somewhat touching scene but they mined every "visiting innocent loved-one in jail" trope u could think of, from the heartfelt declarations of love to touching hands on the glass lol. the encounter with Arrow at the end, with Ollie implying the lightning "chose" him, was a bit eeeehhhhhh. but their interaction can only get better in the future (the "cool" scene where they impress each other was...well, COOL).
BUT, none of it ruined the show or made me wanna switch off.
i understand its the CW (formerly The WB), there are certain expectations when it comes to their shows no matter wat the content, but i'd like to think things like Buffy, and more specifically ANGEL, obliterated those expectations over the years. Arrow followed suit by being extremely gully in its approach, but these guys gotta maintain some sorta balance, so we still get forced rship melodramas & speechifying & SOME poorly-executed emotional moments. not nearly enough of them to ruin my enjoyment of Arrow, and definitely not enough to ruin the Flash pilot (i hate to pull out the "it's just one ep/the pilot" argument, but it IS, and im sure y'all can think of some shows that had fantastic pilots but went off the rails when it went to series).

also, hecka excited to see Tom Cavanagh back on my tv screen on a weekly basis. that man was/is an inspiration (i obsessed over "Ed" as a youth as it informed majority of my 20s into adulthood and cos its just one of the best fucking shows of all times). wonder what his chracter's up to? that future headline sounds like some time travel will come into play as it usually does with Flash stories at one point or another.

Candice Patton is hawt.

the spesh fx were on point too.

i think the fact that it IS The Flash we're dealing with makes the show's tone a lot lighter, but that's only going to escalate as the series progresses. i'm sure any cross-overs with Arrow will mandate some darker storytelling too by default.

definitely didn't come away from that pilot feeling as let down as some. i had fun. one thing i do agree on is a 2hr pilot/mini-movie would've been a good way to start. but as it stands i'm ready for some more.

Having the Star Labs explosion being the cause of an outbreak in metahumans is a good look. But if they're gonna handle them all like they did with the Weather Wizard('s brother... wha-?), then this show's gonna lose me quick. I can forgive cheese if the action and story is tight. The fight choreography on ARROW is movie level. But that's all done practical. I just don't know if the budget on the FLASH can handle making compelling battles for Barry. I mean, I just watched the first villain he faced just stand still while Barry ran. It just didn't seem to have any weight or consequence to it.

Maybe I'm nitpicking. Like I said, I'll give it some time to find it's legs before I call it a dud. But that episode didn't leave me with an overwhelming sense of confidence.

i think there's always a "Barry/Wally running around a tornado of some sort" moment with Flash, it's probly good they did it in the first ep so they don't have to do it again, which means more creatively structured fight scenes in future (i would hope).

man, i never ever watched even one ep of Smallville. i feel like i got that outsiders perspective on a CW show like when ppl look at me funny wen i say im a big Supernatural fan lol. is it worth a shot?

It started out VERY WB/CW and like I was saying, had a problem early on with weekly bad guys who were just affected by Kryptonite and also a problem with fake outs making you think they were gonna establish a popular character only to have it just be another thing entirely, but once it settled down and started delving into the DCU, it got pretty awesome. One of the things that saved it is the cast. Even in the early cheeseball episodes, the cast is so good that you almost forgive the crap.

I think the future episodes should be stronger when they don't have so much that they need to establish. Also, this will likely be cheesier than Arrow, which I expected but it wasn't over the top. Some silly dialogue but it's a CW show so I'm sure there will be more of that than most people want but I can deal with it.

The Weather guy seemed like too crazy of a power for the initial episode but I guess they wanted the running around the tornado moment. Hopefully the cases and the plots will be tighter, which I think they will when they can be the A story rather than a C story like it was here.

Again, I'm not sure this will be able to reach the heights of Arrow for me because I can't see them going that dark but it should be a fun show.

not because I didn't think a good show could be built around Barry Allen, but because (being that I am not a teenage girl) I feel someway about the CW.

And yeah, there's still a bit of CW-ness to be found here but I don't mind at all. The show's got heart, humor, and the action scenes are really, really good.

My fave show this season so far.

I was never really that impressed by Agents of Shield or Arrow, but I'm really looking forward to this each week. It reminds me of early Smallville, with the freak of the week but it works better.

I also like that it doesn't focus too much on his love life right now. There's also the mystery of his mom's death and the Star Labs doctor.

agreed. i feel the same way.

AND, I'm all in my positive feels for JANE THE VIRGIN (!!!!!!!!!) too. Like, both shows are pretty damn good and watchable. Jane could EASILY fall off the rails (it's a remake of a telenovela of all things). But, the writing, and the cast and the fact that Gina Rodriguez is *KILLING IT* as Jane make me think that this show will be one of the surprise new show hits of the season...

and it looks like CW is really trying hard to be decent this year, show wise. Though Supernatural, shit is old as fuck and needs to wrap it up for real.

and im a Tom Cavanagh stan since way back (Ed is my co-fav show of all times), cool to see him play this kinda character. right now i'm 50/50 on if he's all-out evil or is actually helping Barry out in his own twisted way cos of his future forecasting abilities.

overall, i love how open-hearted and on-the-sleeve the emotional moments were in this ep, spesh b/w Barry and Joe. it bordered on cheese in the pilot but felt realer in this ep. the spesh efx have been great! could tell they modeled the clamactic scene after the Burly Brawl somewhat.

i think in terms of how long they should hold out before Iris find out Barry's alias should follow the same path as Arrow: not long.

agreed. Cavanagh is great as Wells. And it's good to see him play a non-comedic role. He's done it before. But here, he's fantastic.

YUP. I really like the emotional moments here more than I do on Arrow. On Arrow, they feel forced in a lot of respects (mainly because not everyone in the cast can pull them off well...I love Stephen Amell, but emotional moments for him look like a struggle). But they work here.

Not only that. But Candice Patton (Iris) said in an interview she has her own run-in with one of the show villains in Episode 6 and she hinted that it may be surprising how Iris deals with him in addition to her and Felicity meeting I think in tonight's crossover episode...i think that's tonight.

The Flash is a great show and an example of how a superhero tv show looks like it's getting it RIGHT.

NOW, IF NBC'S CONSTANTINE comes hard like I'm hoping it will, then DC Comics TV will be three for three with tv shows...

Marvel will still be tops with the Netflix shows they're doing next year....Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. though? yeesh...

I was groaning through most of the pilot but when Tuesday night came back around, I was surprised to find myself excited for a new episode.

I don't watch any superhero shoes or CW shows but it's pretty much what I expected. At least they're not trying to go too dark and gritty with things. It helps that Barry is just sort of a likable goober who isn't constantly brooding over his backstory. His self-doubt could wear thin quickly, but then again... He was already sporting a Flash suit and punching out the Weather Wizard in the first ep so he must not doubt himself *that* much

It's kind of fun to see what's changed from the comics and what's remained consistent. I'm old school so I think of "Iris West" as Barry's love interest, not his sister. The fact that he sees her as both is an... interesting writing choice to say the least.

The Multiplex throwdown was pretty cool looking. I didn't know Multiplex was an established DC villain, so in the back of my mind I was like "Why are they doing this to Mirror Master"

If you're arguing that The Flash will always be, at least, a little bit corny because, well, the Flash is pretty corny, I agree. But I disagree that the dialogue and relationships need to be so cheeseball. That's on the writers.

Walking Dead is a better example; that show shouldn't be corny at all but it is because of the lousy dialogue and that's on the writers of the TV show.

And Gotham, good lord, the campiness of that show is 100% the direction of the showrunner and network. I mean, it's pretty damn gritty at times yet the acting and dialogue is straight outta Shumacher's Batman films.

You'll never get The Dark Knight on network TV but they could at least be a little more competent. (I think Arrow does it well save for some missteps usually surrounding Laurel and SHIELD has gotten better this season, although they still swing and mostly miss at being "Whedonesque".)
