I like the flashbacks to the other women in prison so we can see what their lives were like before they got locked up. I feel if we just filtered everything through Piper's lens it would get real old real fast.

Shit became less and less relatable YES because there were fewer black folks but MAINLY because Nancy's cute ass seemed superhuman in her ability to avoid natural consequences for her actions.

The shit started out a relatively realistic depiction of a suburban mom's 'descent' into drug dealing due to VERY real world pressures. It ended up a fantasy about white women empowerment w/little to NO connection to real life.

People had a problem w/that.

What's weird is I described what, for many, was the big "jump the shark" moment of the show (when she left the black people behind)

But unfortunately, you were so busy trying to take some passive-aggressive/oblique shot at me and "black people and the media" that you apparently missed it

As a result this... whatever you want to call it... that you're putting forth has the distinct smell of bullshit

As usual

and hypersensitive.

That's bullshit.

There's nothing passive about my opinion on that at all.

As for weeds, the shark jumping moments on that show were too many to mention, and none of them had black people. Marrying mexican drug lord, son becomes a murdering sociopath, sexual tension with her brother in law, etc, etc, etc.

That show started declining, hard and early.

But I'm black, and so any criticism must be invalid becuz Al Sharpton.

Yeah, nah, I ain't buyin' it.

Kohan clearly wasn't interested in telling the story of someone who has to pay the price for her many crimes and transgressions, and "YES," the story did have a strong female empowerment angle.

Not sure why that wasn't expected, and/or so problematic, coming from a show created by a woman. It should also be noted that the black female drug dealer on the show (Heylia) didn't suffer for her years of crime, either. Matter of fact, Heylia ended up doing fairly well for herself. Are we gonna be mad about that, too, or "that's different?"

No one had a problem with anything being "relatable" when it came to the many escapes from death that Vic Mackey had. Tony Soprano either. And those examples aren't as "that's different" as you might want to believe.

Nothing in those first three seasons suggested a terrible end for Nancy Botwin, even though she faced multiple situations where she or someone in the family could have been killed, or she could have been caught and faced time. And I guess we all have selective amnesia, because there CERTAINLY were situations where her "cute ass" got bailed out or flat-out lucky during that time.

And make no mistake, Nancy's white privilege is a HUGE component of the story that Jenji told. Not to mention the fact that she's a woman and repeatedly uses that to her advantage. Jenji never shied away from that shit. The problem apparently is that, like Shawn Ryan and his killer white cop, and David Chase and his killer white mobster, she refused to pass the ultimate judgment onto these characters.

Look, the show wasn't perfect and didn't always stick its landings, but it certainly held my interest over its 8 seasons, and not because I wanted to see Nancy get what was allegedly coming to her.

How many times did I need to see Andy tell Nancy he was done only to come back, Silas try to lead an independent life only to come back, Shane do some weird creepy shit, and Nancy try to "start her business back up" despite the fact that it always ultimately fails.

That show got boring and redundant, and not because the black people left. It stopped being interesting because Kohan thought the Nancy was the most exciting part of the show. I think a lot of us disagreed. I thought the setting of Agrestic and Nancy being the nexus for all these different people in the town was way more interesting than just seeing Nancy scheme and flee. That shit was dull and the show overstayed its welcome.

The "it got repetitive" part, not the "Agrestic was the show, not Nancy" part

Nancy was the lead character. The show wasn't about her detailed and wacky plans to sell weed to suburbia; it was ALWAYS about a woman who led a life of privilege who was suddenly forced to fend for herself -- whatever that meant -- and her two kids, and the wacky uncle who completed the new family unit. Like I said, it wasn't always successful, but that was the point.

Never saw Weeds for whatever reason, so can't speak on the baggage/criticism/'cism this may have already. But after watching the 1st ep at work, I can see finishing out the run. It's no House of Cards, but I'm not mad if this is the original programming Netflix is gunning for.

And since I'm really slow on the white girl actress (hell, actors and actresses in general these days...) it did take a minute to click on the fact that Laura was in this joint. Entire episode I'm like 'why do I know that broad? Nice tits, too...'. Not until the very last scene did it click. I feel slow...

but yeah, shit's intriguing to me.

I agree with the poster who said that they liked how the flashbacks show the lives leading to prison... it's an interesting device.

Sidenote: I thought Red was being played by the character actress Eileen Brennan but I guess not.

The lead is good. I like how she's underplaying the "spoiled suburbanite" angle with Piper. It could have easily descended into some bad C-list Reese Witherspoon portrayal of a spoiled woman who has everything taken away, and her resulting struggles amongst the commoners in prison. But I like how we can see her using her melon as she goes along, instead of moping and acting like she doesn't want to touch anyone. She's good. Biggs is okay but I just don't see him as the young suburban cat who's holding it down. It's also funny to see a couple of the secondary characters from Weeds make appearances on the show.

Speaking of which, I think it would be weird/funny if somehow, some way, Romany "Conrad from the 'good' seasons of Weeds" Malco was to appear on the show as his Facebook alter ego, Tijuana Jackson, who has a bunch of funny/profound sayings and thoughts under the title, "Prison Logic." Maybe he's brought in as a motivational speaker for the ladies...

Now, to dip in the shallow pool. A few of the inmates are pretty hot, including the moms with the heavy-set newbie and the skinnier daughter. Also, maybe it's just me and my white media brainwashing (*glares at camera*), but Laura Prepon is hot as shit, even with brunette hair and no makeup... I didn't even need to see the boobies in the pilot...

Anyway, it's good so far, I'm interested in the stories so far, and am wondering if all of the plates that are starting to spin regarding all of the characters will be juggled throughout the season...

And if that lessens my overall enjoyment of the show. My guess is that it won't. Based on all of our various experiences with and thoughts on Weeds, your mileage may vary.

The bigger question for me is wondering just how long this show can go. It's already got an order for season 2 IIRC, but I don't see this show going 8 seasons like Weeds did, especially since it's only supposed to take place over roughly a year's time... while I'm sure there are many stories that can be spun, I can't see this going longer than 4 or 5 seasons...

I'm not at all interested in Piper's life after her 15 months. It's possible that time has been going slower than I initially thought. I'm not particularly good with context clues so the only one I've picked up on is the weather. They started in the fall, based on their clothes when she surrendered, and there was (like episode five or six) a recent reference to the changing leaves. So maybe this season is only going to cover three or four actual months?

But then you have the spinning plates problem that you mentioned. The show succeeds when the characters introduced as kooky/dangerous weirdos start to get some actual dimension, and even though it's plausible because prison is one of the settings for a show where it makes sense for characters to come and go, I'd rather see the show take yet another step with each of the characters it's given real shape to than continue to add, shade, and then walk away.

We'll see. I like it so far. I rather appreciate how ... sensitive (is I guess the word I want) the show is at how the prisoners kind of cobble a weird culture together from the few things they have control over and how that culture then acquires huge stakes. It's not a "look at this craziness" as I thought it'd be, though that risk is never going to go away.

I mean, I know that the jumping-off point for the show was Piper's book, but if Netflix and Kohan want to keep going after she's released, I think it would be interesting if they started focusing on another inmate's story as Piper's story faded out... that would actually be very cool...

As the series progressed I found myself much less sorry for her. Doesn't seem remotely like a nice or good person

This is a very entertaining show.

It's propaganda up the wahoo, but hey, the entertainment is THERE and oozing all over the place. I know its probably been sanctioned and funded by the propagandists, but I will not deny the entertainment value.

This show is entertaining, and THE PEOPLE LOVE IT. It's a hit for Netflix, and this will change the game. HBO costs me $10 bux a month. Netflix is $8 bux a month with Much Much more content. This show alone may change the game because for many people who don't have Netflix, they will consider it, because the word of mouth has been BETTER THAN GREAT.

House of Cards didn't have the same level of word of mouth.

When I say same level, I mean from average viewers, and common folks. I've had so many people who don't follow every action Netflix makes, or really keep up with the industry in general talk about Orange.

House of Cards has a different audience. Orange is becoming cooler talk. House of Cards has a different appeal. And to say House of Cards is better is a matter of opinion.

I'm speaking on mass popularity. And I'm not talking about media hype. With Orange....even the streets are talking about it.

I really enjoyed Orange...but it's not getting any Emmy nods. Better writing and better acting across the board for Cards. That said, this isn't an apples to apples comparison either. One's a political drama, the other is a social dramedy. Orange may have a wider appeal, but that doesn't make it better by any stretch (doesn't mean it's worse either, but you get the point)

As for being a game changer, it is a bit early to say for either. But, House of Cards being the first online show to get an Emmy nod has to count for something. Not necessarily a paradigm shift, but more of a change than Orange, for whatever that's worth

It was OK.
I was more interested in some of the other inmates than Piper.
Like I couldn't help watch Piper and see Nancy Botwin all over again.

And why...WHY didn't they give us a back story on Susanne/Crazy Eyes?
She was the most interesting in my opinion. Loved every scene she was in.
All they did was tease us with that scene w/ her white foster parents.
Her and Tasty were my favorite characters.

Fantastic characters. I just have to hope it doesn't go too crazy off the rails...

That said - I'm REALLY looking forward to Crazy Eyes, Yoga, and some of the others' backstories. I hope they get more into Ms. Claudette too.

http://dorothysurrenders.blogspot.com/2013/07/orange-is-new-rainbow.html

Orange Is the New Rainbow

I can’t stop thinking about “Orange Is the New Black,” because – duh – it’s awesome. Plus, dude, Laura Prepon. But it’s also because the show is so different from anything on our TV radar right now. And one of those ways is in its brilliant, brilliant diversity.

Some shows feature mostly white casts with one or two tokens thrown in for appearances. Others feature diverse casts, but that diversity is never addressed other than as a pleasant, unspoken rainbow coalition. But “Orange Is the New Black” takes the forced integration of a former NPR-listening, artisanal soap making, Seven Sisters-educated white woman and makes it its guiding principal.

Still this is also so much more than just a fish-out-of-water story. Upper-class white woman who goes to prison faces horrors and hilarity interacting with the diverse prison population. Sure, we see some of that – especially at first. But then Orange peals back the top layer – the stereotypes and the clichés and assumptions – to show us the soft, fragile center of almost everyone underneath. And that, in and of itself, is extraordinary.

Minority characters – and female characters – are far too often a means to an end in storytelling. The sassy best friend. The street-smart co-worker. The hot lust object. They’re not fully realized people, and were never meant to be. “Orange Is the New Black” could have done that with its diverse cast. Miss Claudette is the sage. Taystee is the comic relief. Diaz is the cautionary tale. And while they have those elements to their characters, they’re much more complex than that. It’s that essential humanity that is so often lacking. People of color become a concept, not an actual person. But not here. Here they’re all real and interesting, flawed and so very human.

The key is that these women are the heroes (and villains) of their own stories. They are not just amusing anecdotes meant to add color to the main character’s life. We know this because most of the time Piper isn’t even aware of their histories – how they got there, what’s happening now. Their backstories are just theirs and ours to know and understand. So these women have their own agency, their own agendas, their own struggles, their own triumphs, their own failures. This matters.

I’m so glad we know more about these women. And I want to learn more; I want to learn everything. Think of the character arc of someone like Crazy Eyes, played by the delightful Uzo Aduba. She begins as a joke, a quick scary-lesbians-in-prison punchline complete with unwanted dispersing of bodily fluids. But then, as we get to know her, she develops organically into a Shakespeare-spouting thespian with an unexpected family. So when Piper’s initial descriptions of her as retold by Larry (ugh, Larry) hurts her it hurts us, too. Not just because of the inherent cruelty in her thoughtless words, but because of the ignorance those first impressions convey. We are all more than our first impression, our stereotypes, our preconceived notions of what we should be. We all deserve to be seen as such.

Or take Sophia, glorious Sophia. As played by real-life transgender actress Laverne Cox, she is a powerful reminder that stories, at their best, change how we view the world. You can’t watch Sophia’s story and say you don’t have a better (not complete, by any means, but better) understanding of trans people’s lives and challenges. It’s a performance, among many on the show, Emmy voters would be wise to take note of next summer. Also, I’d love for Sophia to have a relationship next season, preferably with another woman. I mean if we’re asking for favors from the TV gods, why not be thorough?

I’ve found myself thinking about “Orange Is the New Black” long after finishing the series because the series gave me so much to think about. White privilege, racial separatism, cultural elitism. All these issues get thrown into a place they can’t run from each others because literal bars are holding them back. But in the end we don’t feel imprisoned by their experiences, we feel released. Life is so much richer when we’re given stories that treat everyone’s lives as different, important and real.

p.s. Also, fucking hell, are these ladies funny.

Sly ensemble storytelling with great characters thanks to some superb writing and casting

If this show were eligible for Emmy consideration, I'd nominate Taylor Schilling, Taryn Manning, Kate Mulgrew, Pablo Schreiber, and, yes, Jason Biggs

And as far as the minorities go, I would nominate Vicky Jeudy, Michelle Hurst, and Dascha Polanco (yum)...

Let this be a lesson to everybody, it's not really wise to judge a show based on a half-ass trailer

And there is no "but to be fair" about it, either

He also appears in the upcoming HBO movie Clear History and apparently will not receive a credit for doing so

>‘Orange Is The New Black’ Adds Lorraine Toussaint, Promotes Danielle Brooks

By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Monday July 29, 2013 @ 11:15am PDT

EXCLUSIVE: Heading into second season, Netflix’s comedic prison drama Orange Is The New Black has added Lorraine Toussaint in a heavily recurring role. Additionally, Danielle Brooks, who recurred on Season 1 as Taystee, has been promoted to regular. She joins fellow newly minted series regular Taryn Manning.

Toussaint, repped by Innovative and manager Craig Dorfman, will play Vee, a long-time street tough who ran her own drug business, recruiting children to serve as runners. She recurs on ABC Family’s The Fosters and starred in Ava Duvernay’s Middle Of Nowhere. Brooks, repped by Innovative, landed the role of carefree Tasha Jefferson aka Taystee fresh out of Julliard.

Hemlock Grove and Lillyhammer? Fail

House of Cards and Orange? Win

Arrested Development? Undecided. Not nearly the smash everybody wanted or expected, but it was nowhere near as bad as many try to make it seem. I can see how they were trying to use the 'all at once' release format to try telling the story differently, which worked for some and not for others. And even with it's faults (episode runtime among them) it was still plenty funny.

While normally they wouldn't have left ole girl alone and the prisoners know better than to be so "aggressive", they were tryin to scare ole go and it backfired cause they didn't know how far the lil white chick had gone over the edge....they tried to tighten up after that, but most of the guards and inmates have an understanding....:

idk if she is famous, think first time I've seen her, goes for most the cast aside from Hot Donna and American Pie guy and girl. That's not looking up tho, maybe some would click if I knew.

3 eps in, enjoying the show. Liked how they packed the nudity in the first 10 minutes of ep1 Made me keep watching lol

First off the show is great. Was so prepared to hate this but was hooked after three episodes.

Couldn't help but think this show would have generated 100x more posts and tweets if this story was told over 13 weeks. we're are the episode by episode analyseses? After the first couple of positive reviews that lead me to check for the show I avoided all articles and discussions until I was done with the whole thing.

I know we live in an on demand age but there is a value to not being allowed to binge and anticipation building each week for an episode.

She always read on-screen as "Laura Prepon playing a convict" to me. Her flashbacks with Piper felt right, but for me, nothing with Alex in prison really came together. Or maybe her eyebrows were just too distracting. I don't know. Bye.

I had a hard time sleeping without watching one more episode before bed. I hate Piper and love Crazy Eyes. Her facial expressions are pure comedy GOLD! I can't wait for season 2.

My boy said they are actually filming on his block in the upper west side. I guess that's some scene for Piper's fiance.

It's not a golden show, like Weeds it treats a subject I have a little experience with (though in both cases not to the degree any of the subjects do) and manages to make it seem a little too freewheeling. It's VERY easy to forget that this is a prison we're experiencing, but I'm sure they found a few that allow their inmates to roam freely from room to room. It just didn't make sense for a roster that seemed to be halfway full with murderers.

But it was GREAT entertainment, it took me something like 2 months to watch the first 4 episodes but a couple days ago I watched the 5th and was all in from there, I really dug how the layers were repeatedly peeled back on each character and that ending...man. So a post above said Manning is definitely coming back? Piper was clobbering the FUCK out of her, I'm surprised they're going to let her live. My prediction? She got pounded so fucking hard that Piper is going to inadvertently give her a new pair of teeth and it'll be all good between them.

Also, when I was a young kid I stumbled across this song called "Wastin' My Time" by Boomkat through the 8 Mile soundtrack and was hooked on it for a long time. When Manning first appeared on screen I knew she looked familiar - she was one of my boyhood crushes!

and

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_GuIDnZPHs

Amazing job out of her, she's got talent.

it's no where near as great as House of Cards, fuck outta here with that Bullshit, but yeah whatever

Michelle Hurst was in a car accident before the holidays.

Michelle Hurst, known for her role as the tidy, intimidating Miss Claudette on the Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black, woke up from a medically induced coma Thursday morning, according to an online fundraising page.

The website says the actress was in a "bad car accident just before the holidays" and is currently being treated at the ICU at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital in North Carolina.

"She is out of the coma (after 16 days) and has opened her eyes!" the page reports (the person making updates is unclear, but the organizer of the fundraiser is listed as "Orange is the New Black").

All donations — currently at $13,356, way past the stated goal of $5,000 — will go to Hurst's sister "to help pay for her medical expenses & time off of work," according to the page.

Castmates have turned to Twitter to promote the fundraising page:

"Pls send love & good wishes 2 @OITNB Michelle Hurst (Miss Claudette). if u can, help us raise money 4 her recovery," tweeted OITNB star Taylor Schilling, who plays the show's main character, Piper.

"Please give what you can to help Michelle Hurst - the amazing actress who plays Ms. Claudette on OITNB," wrote Natasah Lyonne, who plays Nicky.

The show's official Twitter account, as well as Piper Kerman, whose memoir inspired the series, also tweeted to help Hurst:

"Thanks to our OITNB family for their thoughts and prayers for Michelle Hurst."

"People you are amazing. In less than 2 days you raised double the goal for Michelle Hurst aka 'Miss Claudette.'"
