1. "The start of the Glen Mazzara era..."
In response to Reply # 0

"This Sunday, AMC will air the first episode of The Walking Dead made entirely under the leadership of Glen Mazzara, who replaced his former boss and the zombie drama's creator, Frank Darabont, as showrunner after Darabont was fired last summer. "

"But now, six months after Darabont left, with the first all-Mazzara episode about to air, can you say you have your own vision for the show?

I do. I see it as a horror show, and that just means to me that it needs to be incredibly suspenseful. That suspense could come from interpersonal drama or it could come from the zombie scare of the week. I’ve really been trying — and you’ll see in these next six episodes, but even in the midseason finale, which was the first final script that Frank did not touch — I’ve been trying to amp up the intensity of the show. To make it feel less safe, more dangerous, more in your face, taking away any good options for the characters. Their backs are against the wall and they’re frightened. I’m trying to keep the show as immediate as possible, so that an audience member can imagine themselves in that situation, and wonder, What would I do? That is something that I think I’m bringing to the show. Hopefully you can see that I’m trying to push people into new emotional territory."

The "safeness" of the show is why it has sucked so far this season. I'm starting to get my hopes up now.

So much so that imho it's a flaw (cause it's like, how much death, destruction & bad luck can a group have). They need to bring that edge back, and it's been missing.

i even laughed when Dale was about to pontificate about the morality of killing the walkers in the barn and Laurie was like "its over, no need to talk about it anymore". to me it was a subtle diss at last season and all the criticisms they received for the ridiculous monologues.

... It was the typical "Walking Dead" thing of everyone talking in circles for minutes on end. I did like the way it ended, but the show always has those one or two moments that make you stick around for another week. Hopefully it'll pick up some forward momentum next week.

It was a bit long, but unlike the previous Rick speeches that they used to pad the episodes, it made sense: they destroyed that guys faith and a two minute clip to bring him back into the fold wasn't going to be believable.

I was like "why?"

Then I immediately thought: "she's going to do something incredibly stupid to drive the story forward."

And look what happened.

Only redeeming part was Rick shooting those two guys. Too bad the non-fat one seemed like he could have been a genuinely interesting character. Now their presence was quite pointless for the story, it only served to remind us that Rick is quick on the draw..

Why? You have no reason to think anything has happened at that point. All it's doing is putting another person in danger.

Let's talk about what was good...

The fantastic saloon showdown. Finally a Rick speech seemed appropriate; the tension was thick even with the fat guy overselling his smarminess. Plus it was cool seeing a badass moment, considering how whiney and scared they've been for such a long time. Also the #teamshane movement is getting so powerful even the other castmates are seeing his hidden evil genius. Finally the general pacing of the episode was solid...something that they haven't had all season. Even though there was only one minor zombie scene, it kept my attention throughout.

The bad...

I could understand Dale being wary and warning everyone that he thinks that Shane *might* have had something to do with Otis dying. It's like, all Dale had to do was bring up their past crazy interactions as proof. His psychic ability to EXACTLY how it happened just seemed stupid. And speaking of which...

And the stupid...

So, you're telling me that Rick & Glen go into town and because of this Lori protests(rightfully so) because she's sick of him running off. Some chick passes out, and maybe an hour later in TV time she's insisting they send out a party to bring them back? And after getting rebuffed she goes HERSELF?!? AND THEN SHE FUCKING CRASHES HER CAR WHILE GETTING THERE?!?!? It's like, we are in a a post apocalyptic world filled with random zombie attacks & dangerous Lord of The Flies assholes. There have got to be more believable choices the writers can make a character make to get a character into a situation. Like you want to set up Lori hurt & away from camp...make her think her son had wandered off. Make her go confront Shane and get lost. Hell, just have her take a goddamn walk to clear her head.

i really liked this episode. the bar scene was dope. shit got real.

the shit i didn't like was the group accusing hershel of knowing the little girl was in the barn. didn't dude want them gone? why would he purposefully stall them? maybe he liked the protection they provided. but i don't really see that though. that whole thing seemed dumb to me.

but really hope dumb ass lori gets killed. next they should take out dale. dude is pissing me off.

One to bait them and one to restrain the walker. How the hell where they getting the walker into the barn without the other walkers getting out? Somebody other than Dale had to be helping him round them up.

Rick doesn't owe those two a damn thing, he has a family and camp to worry about already. Shit, the fact that Rick had to kill those dudes should tell you that Rick made the right decision not inviting them back to Hershel's farm

Yeah, Hershel doesn't owe Rick and his crew anything, but he actually kinds of needs them at the same time.

Rick, Herschel, and glenn knew that those guys were bad news as soon as they stepped into the tavern.

Rick saw dishonesty in their eyes, and the conversation didn't really start off well, especially when dude said that he took his gun away from a cop, and Rick was like I'm I cop ....that pretty much said it all.

Plus the pissing inside of the bar was a bad omen.....

Keep in mind Rick is a cop, and a cop can smell bullshit from a mile away ....you can't fool a good cop...no way no how.

any other person would have sat there while the bad person hopped on the other side to
make a drink ...Rick knew it was a scheme and immediately stood up and positioned his hand on his gun.

Glenn is a utility guy, but he is not an enforcer. He is not the cannon man. That's not his space ...but he showed hell of balls when Shane jumped up in Maggie's face...Glenn got in front of his ass with the quickness

...Rick's face at the end.lol She was all hugged up on him, whispering shit real smooth in his ear like, "Shane's trying to take your shit, Hunny Bunny......You need to handle that, Baby." Lol

Rick had the deranged-eyes look like, "I'mma kill that motherfucker!!"

But what she said was valid, in the same way what Andrea to Shane was valid, based on everything that's happened so far.

Though I really do find myself gravitating towards Shane's point of view. He's not wrong to be worried about the implications of bringing that kid to the farm, and wtf is Lori still mad about him thinking Rick was dead? Of course he thought dude was dead, SHE DID TOO.

Sounded like a tip to the audience about the ridiculousness of the writing/decision making on this show.

Ok I understand Lori and Rick being on one team. But why is T-Dog, Andrea, and everyone else following them with wildly selfish decisions that put them all at risk?

If I was Shane I would just take the blonde chick and bounce, cuz clearly the group is about to be led to their death soon by Rick and Hershel

They're gonna split up into two camps like on LOST. Rick/Jack vs. Shane/Locke.

... Last night hit a close-to-perfect mix of action/horror/gore (that scene of the zombie's flesh peeling back and he tried to get through the broken car window was some fucking gnarly shit) and human drama. There's still some deadweight that needs to be cleared away (*cough* T-Dog *cough*) and the show needs to develop some kind of forward momentum, but yeah, this show might get good yet...

and top 2 or 3 overall.

Great action sequences, actually relevant dialog and excellent pacing throughout.

One minor qualm is starting the show with clips from the major action piece... it would have been nice to have that reveal after Rick and Shane were going at it.

Other than that, kudos.

In response to Reply # 0

Be careful for certain spoilers if you haven't read the comic:

http://liljas-library.com/showinterview.php?id=90

and it has the following tidbit:

Lilja: I have read the comics and the TV series follows the comic pretty well even if some characters differs but is that what you want to do? Follow the comic? Or do you want to stay true to the spirit of the comic but take off on a different road?

Glen Mazzara: I would like to push the show a little closer to the comics. I think there are characters and stories in the comic that I would like to get to sooner than later. We do take the comics as inspiration and it’s a great source material but my goal is to take the TV series a little closer to the comic.

he's saying that some sense of order still has to be established and it's bigger than the group-it's about the humanity in people and not becoming animals surviving on instinct

Yes. This. If they keep just murdering every human they come across just in case they might be shady, there will be no survivors left after a while. From Shane's point of view you're at constant war with every living thing. From Rick's, youre ready to go to war at the drop of a hat but you still see that humans can possibly bring you an advantage, plus it way less dickish.

To me, this group owes it to humanity to try and do everything they can to try and at least give humans some sort of niche in this environment, if not take it back over (granted you must take a utilitarian approach, i.e. some humans are gonna get murked for being shady). This is also why I was mad that Laurie wanted to off Carl. You're going to murder a child because they can't have the same childhood you had? FOH My great grandparents didn't murk my grandpa because he was born in the depression.

BUT he isn't pulling the trigger when it comes to survival. There's a line between making a life and straight survival. Shane is trying to survive, which despite it all, should be the ultimate goal in a zombie apocalypse tho he may be a bit too hot headed.

All that talk about being able to handle himself...He definitely reminded me he was a kid, even in this doomed world where it would seem like you need to grow up quick.

Him not saying anything about the walker really bothered me. Like, I understand he may have been scared and maybe couldn't pull the trigger, or thought he was gonna get in trouble for wandering off and taking the gun, but even he should have known at this point the protocol for dealing with the zombies. He needed to open his mouth. Tell his pop, his mom, tell Shane.....someone.

it's like they let Dale annoy us the entire episode only to satisfy our desires for him to die already. and LOL at bitch ass Carl. this show continues its streak of being absolutely shitty the first 50-55 minutes and making me happy during the last 5-10. i was watching it at my parents' pad; they don't watch the show and they were looking at me weird as i was rooting for the walker to kill Dale.

Speaking of this death, which is relatively early in the series, I think it fully cements the fact that this will be NOTHING like the comic.

It's annoying how they turned the one voice of reason into a whiny old man.

However, the kid playing with a zombie storyline that lead to his death (and his death itself) was great.

...Shane's growing "Survival of the Fittest" mentality. They were opposite sides of the spectrum, with Rick the middle ground, and everyone else falling somewhere between the three. He remained steadfast in his stance on maintaining a sense of humanity for the group. He started out as a concerned dad/grandpa, very similar to Hershel.

But at some point, his speeches turned into whiny "better than you" ramblings accented with the old man stink face.

He became a nagging "What about law school"-type dad/grandpa.

Despite her tough talk, she hasn't convinced me she's fully in Shane's corner. And considering her current connection to Shane vs. her previous connection to Dale, I think she could swing back closer to Dale's way of thinking.

You figure with Shane gone by the end of season Dale doesn't really serve a purpose since he's so one sided like you said. I thought the same thing you did but it's a shame; a character is supposed to be something better then just an ideological placepoint.

to turn someone? After Dale got opened up they're trying to find a way to help him and they giver up seemingly because he couldn't be moved, injuries had gone too far. But that Zombie clawed his ass up, the fever should have been setting in so it wouldn't matter even if they could sew his ass back up. I've also seen a ton of characters end up grappling with zombies all up close and personal with no repercussions. Those zombies aren't going to just reach for you only to pull you towards their mouths, they'd probably be clawing and trying to bring handfuls of flesh back at all times to munch on. Oh, and a cut from a zombie can turn you, but dousing yourself in zombie blood does nothing? I'm fine with suspending disbelief for almost all of that except the reaction to Dale's injury.

First off, it's not like you're bulletproof in your stomach area. If someone had that much mindless fury, I don't think it would take too much strength to dig and claw and tear into someone's midsection like that. And likely the zombie's hands were already worn down to the harder bone underneath from clawing at other shit (like the cow).

Now if the zombie had like ripped off Dale's arm from the socket... THAT would seem to be a feat of superhuman strength.

the cow could've gotten an injury when the gate broke, that happens sometimes when animals stampede thru a small entrance
I seriously doubt a walker did that on its own

Obviously the zombies do lots of standing around when they have no prey, and only show serious agitation when humans are around. It's more than conceivable that it got tired (or whatever) near the stream then mud gathered around its feet while it stood there for however long. It had no reason to try and free itself until Carl came along.

Honestly, these are very small cases of zombies doing "more" than they're capable of (and I personally think they entirely make sense). Now, what was really problematic were those cases in the first season where zombies were climbing fences or using tools (like rocks to break a door down). THAT is stretching what zombie "lore" has established over the years.

that shit if pretty funny
last one they had a poll where they asked what Rick should do to Randall in the barn when Carl was standing there, and one of the poll selections was 'shoot Shane'
which of course won and got like half the votes
I say they make that an 'I'm white'-like option for every one they do

There's a Breaking Bad podcast that's done after each show hosted by the Giligam dude that's the head writer for the show. I believe it's available for download either the Monday or Tuesday after each show airs.

As with Randy, who died by a broken neck, you can turn after dying if you didn't suffer a major brain injury. Shane was stabbed in the heart by Rick, so he turned into a walker.

As pointed out above. They are just introducing the concept of everyone being infected with the zombie virus. Anyone who dies, through any means, will become a zombie.

That was awful fast for him to come back after dying though. It might have been cooler to follow the comic's handling of Shane's death and revival.

Between this, and no twins around, the tv version of Carl isn't going to get any good moments.

You should hit somebody up, or check out your local library for the first two volumes after the finale next week, if you are inclined to do so.

The season finale looks like it will end in roughly the same spot as volume 2.

I like how they set it up. Shane is way more fleshed out in the tv series, and was just as much of a father figure to Carl as Rick. You didn't really get the chance to see that in the comic, since he died so early. I'd imagine Carl would have been extremely conflicted having to kill Shane. He was ready to pop a cap in Rick after seeing Shane on the ground. On the show, Shane probably would have had to seriously injure Rick, or be 2 seconds from stabbing Rick in the head before Carl pulls that trigger.

So instead you have Rick kill him, then have Carl kill zombie Shane, giving the nod to the comic heads.

What I really wish, was that Shane didn't come back so fast. He needed to be a surprise, perhaps in the finale or at some point in season 3...

I'm wondering if the writers are going to use http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Rise-Governor/dp/0312547730/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1332112702&sr=1-1 to explain his backstory or jump right into his arc?

and he's quoted as wanting to align closer with the comics. Judging from how these past few episodes have gone (which are free of Darabont's involvement), it feels like Mazzara's got the show on the right track.

Also, for the comic heads... in the opening montage with Shane, Andrea, Daryl and T-Dog taking out the cow-eating walkers.... anyone else notice that T-Dog was wielding a hammer? Just saying.

Yeah, that was very noticeable, but the character you're alluding to from the comics did not handle guns as well as T-Dog, so I'm guessing the hammer detail was just a wink to people that read the comics.

***COMIC SPOILER***

Assuming Michione is on the show, I'm worried about her hooking up with T-Dog being that he's been such an under-developed character and I'm hoping she'll be fully fleshed out. In the comics, her early partner of choice was much more fleshed out and gave their relationship or whatever you choose to call it some dimension.

but as we've seen they're more than willing to tweak/change whole aspects of the comics.

Pretty neat though how T-Dog's been involved with both of the recent winks to comic readers.

***MORE COMIC SPOILERS***

Agreed. Hopefully what we've seen is a start towards that, especially since two major characters are now snuffed out.

T-Dog doesn't really fit the "former NFL player" mold though.

STORY: 'The Walking Dead' Dissection: Robert Kirkman Dishes on 'Monumental Event'

"Better Angels," the heavily hyped episode that featured the not-so-surprising yet shocking death of Jon Bernthal's uncontrollable Shane, ticked up to 6.9 million total viewers, up about 200,000 week-over-week.

The hour, which comic creator/executive producer Robert Kirkman dubbed a "monumental event," also drew 4.6 million in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic and 4.1 million in adults 25-54.

The series set basic-cable ratings records in both demos in February when its midseason premiere bested its then-record Season 2 premiere numbers.
The Walking Dead's sophomore season finale airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC.

And it's a huuuuuge weakness as far as script writing goes.
Characters react to shit without any sensible reason to
react the way they do. They could have written in a hundred
reasons to start conflict between Lori and Rick but they
take the lazy route by making her react poorly to a perfectly
reasonable explanation of what happened to Shane.

Honestly, can anyone just walk in off the street and be
writer?

I'm actually glad I didn't give up on this show after the first half of S2. Just a wealth of great stuff tonight. I'm not even mad at Laurie officially becoming Betty Draper-level irritating.

i might have to read through the comics.

but yea, fuck lori. i'm sick of her bullshit.

fuck t-dog. his uselessness is pissing me off. he doesn't even get many speaking lines. it's time.

i didn't expect rick to be a g like that. dude was playing no games at the end. i think he's turned heel for good.

i really thought that andrea would reunite with the group but her and this hooded lady might make a badass team.

the whole last stand on the farm was dope. i kinda feel bad for the farm people though. i knew they were gonna die all along. hell, i don't even remember their names. at least suicide girl got her shine for an episode. those other two were like the one nameless ensign going on an away mission with kirk and spock. never had a chance.

gotta say, i'm looking forward to next season.

that's not evil, it's real shit
he's conflicted about murking Shane, despite the fact that he was justified

unlike MOST of yall, i've enjoyed this season a lot, outside the typical, damn that was dumb, moments. BUT the monologues are gone, characters are getting killed off, and character arches/identities are being resolved.

I SO HAPPY, they aint kill of my boo Andrea, i find that woman so sexy.

as for Lori, i have finally been converted to the Lori is an enormous cunt brigade. how Rick aint backhand her is beyond me

lastly, it's real clever how in killing Shane, Rick has assumed some of Shane's character traits... it's a Rictatorship

not a reader of the comic, though i did a quick wiki last week, what does the Prison represent?

That second half of the season was leaps and bounds better than the slow, shambling mess of the first half.... and it really feels like a truer interpretation of the spirit of the comics (which makes sense, as Mazzara has explicitly stated he wanted to bring the show closer to the comics).

Also, for those complaining about Lori... if you remember the books, she's exactly the same way. Petty, irrationally angry, loves Rick one moment, hates him the next... She's a bitch, but she's intended to be a bitch... just saying.

Andrea (in both the comics and show) is written as a much more assertive person and confident person... let alone Michonne.

*minor comic spoilers*

Even Carol, despite how confused she gets when Alan passes in the comics, isn't written as bitchy as Lori is.

*end spoilers*

Lori's character is consistently shitty throughout, because she's a shitty person.

Bitch? Hell yeah.

Outside of her behavior and manipulation of Rick and Shane, I have no issues with Lori's thought processes towards the group. Like evrybody else, she's tried to make sense of a world engulfed in chaos. Her wanting to let Carl die, her wanting to respect the rights of the dead and not take their stuff, her arguing with Andrea over establishing a stable reality for the people at the house...were just as valid as Rick's, Shane's, Dale's, and everyone else's concerns.

Her fuck ups are due to her handling of Rick and Shane. For all of her attitude towards Shane, I knew she was feeling him more than she let on. Perhaps it was her own guilt over smashing Shane mixed with Shane's "Fuck Yo' Man!!" demeanor, that had her dissing him, especially with Rick there. She was emotionally torn. Andrea called her out on it when she tried to play the "woe is me"card. She's got her husband and her "boyfriend" staring her in the face every day. And she used it. And now she's salty because her husband killed her jump off, and now she's being confronted with her true feelings.

So fuck her for that. The only thing I'd say which could validate her anger at Rick is learning that her son was involved in Shane's death. I'd imagine hearing that your son put a slug in your zombie jumpoff's head, would be a shock to the system...

Any way...

1)The chick they got to play Michonne... will she be rocking the short hair on the show? Or will they give her some Mekhi Phifer 8-Mile fake dreads?

2)Whats the over under on us seeing the Governor next season? I mean timeline wise we should, but I pray they dont try to stretch it out and save him for season 4.

remember when t-dawg was going to get randall from the shed he said THE GOVERNOR called. i don't know if they are deviating from the comics and building Rick up to be the governor or not because he has definitely turned heel. he's basically running the shit the way he sees fit and not asking questions anymore. basically turned into Shane. we shall see.

1. Did the writing improve notably from the beginning of the season?

2. If the answer to #1 is yes, what episode did it start showing clear improvement so that if I decide to jump back in, I can skip all the episodes of people sitting around and whining with no forward progress to the narrative.

... ie, the last 6 episodes. This is when Mazzara had 100% control of the show and there was no longer any Darabont influence. Still a couple eye-rolling dialogue moments, but for the most part there were clear goals, relevant character driven dialogue and far, far better pacing overall.

Darabont getting fired may have been the best thing for the show... He's been known for the "big payoff" in movies and we saw that (dragged to its interminable conclusion) with Sophia in the first half.

This is no longer the case with Mazzara.

Edit: Or if you don't want to be bothered with all that, watch at least the last 3 for the most pivotal moments.

i was answering homie's question. i'll bet you 9 out of 10 watchers completely forgot about this guy who got eaten up. Rick and Carl needed saving, and they needed to get rid of this character already. it's 2 birds with 1 stone and you get a gore scene. it was convenient and entertaining.

The second season finale and Ernest Dickerson’s got the reins!

On Sunday, March 18, AMC will air the second season finale of its smash zombie-apocalypse shoe The Walking Dead. Our pal (and Tfh guru) Ernest Dickerson directed the episode. Dickerson also directed what are, for my money, the two best episodes of the season — the premiere from last October and the quite excellent 18 Miles Out from just a few weeks ago.

Sunday’s episode should, literally, be a blast. (Fun game: toast any time a character shoots a gun toward camera. Double toast if it’s the end of an act and triple toast if it’s the end of the episode!) Here’s a quick preview from AMC. Beware Spoilers!

In case you want to get caught up with Ernest’s Tfh contributions, here’s a playlist. (Watch them all, there will be a quiz.) Lots of classic monster stuff here, »

'Walking Dead' finale draws record ratings
by James Hibberd

AMC’s The Walking Dead finale set a ratings record for the network, clocking a truly impressive 9 million viewers.
The second season closer was the show’s highest-rated episode ever (and AMC’s most-watched episode of regular series television ever). A full 6 million of those viewers were among adults 18-49, too, which is quite a trick to pull off. Walking Dead ranks as the top-rated show in cable history among the adult demo. (Watch, now AMC executives will think: “If we cut the budget again, the ratings will go up even higher!”)
I got to see last night’s episode at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin where fans literally cheered Rick saving Herschel and the appearance of Michonne. For more, check out EW’s interview with writer-producer Robert Kirkman about the finale, and see our item about which actress is going to be under the hood to play a sword-wielding badass.

Characters still tend to repeat points ad nauseum aloud, and they continue to tell everyone exactly how they feel in repetitive and on-the-nose manners, which is just so grating to hear. But there were some great visuals, a couple of cool deaths, and a pretty solid sense of dread.

The whole hammer thing, the whole change in his attitude. Writers were saying they have big plans for him this upcoming season. I just can't get that ass whooping Merle put on him in season 1 out of my head lol.

one hand and all
also I think since he got his shit cut off, Rick's probably safe from losing a hand-it'd be a tad expensive to CGI that with all the screen time he gets

...that Tyrese is not on the show. Such a compelling character, why wouldn't they introduce him on the series?

one black guy in a post apocalyptic world. much of the angst i have against sci-fi/horror writers in general. black people never exist in the future lol. no mention of the black guy and his son from season one. and the only guy we are stuck with for 3 seasons is t-dog who might have had 10 lines in the 3 seasons.

I'm only about 45 in but he has only shown up in one brief scene just checking in on him at a point that plot wise the show hasn't gotten to.

'Walking Dead' Producer Eyes Tyrese, Morgan's Return

Posted 3/22/12 12:19 pm EST by Josh Wigler in Image Comics, TV

Michonne has arrived. The Governor isn't far behind. With those two players on the way, which other fan-favorite "Walking Dead" comic book characters might make their debut next season? According to Glen Mazzara, the answer could well be… Tyrese!

The "Walking Dead" showrunner participated in a conference call with press (via MovieWeb) and answered questions about the upcoming third and fourth seasons of the AMC zombie series. During the call, he confirmed that Tyrese is a character that's still very much on his radar, along with a few other familiar faces.

"I think the Tyrese character is someone we are interested in introducing at some point," said Mazzara. "We still have Morgan and Dwayne, who are out there from the pilot. We are interested in them. There are new characters that will be original to the series. Not coming straight from the comic book."

Mazzara also spoke about the show's hotly awaited move to the prison, which plays host to the "Walking Dead" story's most iconic events. In the showrunner's eyes, the prison will last all throughout season three, perhaps even beyond.

"Right now, I do see the prison storyline lasting through both season three and four," he said. "I do think that is a major storyline. I know we were on the farm, perhaps, longer than people wanted. There were reasons for that. What we want is for that prison to not feel claustrophobic. I think the farm played a little claustrophobic for some people. Now that the entire landscape has fallen victim to the zombie apocalypse, zombies are literally at the gates of this prison. That prison is a very small safe corner. There is a lot of danger around. It won't feel like we are bottled up, the way we were on the farm."

One way Mazzara plans on breaking the bottled up feeling: by introducing us to the Governor's camp.

"I do think that prison is a significant storyline, but we are also interested in opening up this world. The Governor has the world of Woodbury. There are other factors out there, other groups. I do think that Rick's group is stumbling into a much larger world."

If done right, the prison events can totally span two seasons.

Rick losing a hand,
As awesome as this sounds
this will be another deviation,
No way they're gonna spend money on editing out his hand every show.
Shit would look extra fake and distracting otherwise.

couldn't they just wrap his hand in gauze and make it look like a stump for post-mutilation episodes?

I was thinking about whether or not they include this element, but they can resort to much cheaper measures than just using CGI every episode.
