It was pretty funny last night, for the 1st time in a while.

I still watch mainly out of loyalty, though.

The best episodes are the ones where Michael is in a relationship. After last night, we can only assume the rest of the season is going to have some great material.

I'm all for that, because there aren't enough Dwight moments to fill an episode (unfortunately) and the Jim & Pam storyline has turned to shit.

I'm sad that Steve is going to leave the show -- even though we all knew the day was coming eventually. I hope when he's written out of the show, it is to go live with Holly...

Maybe the 2nd best ep of the season behind the wedding ep. The office isn't consistently good anymore, but there are enough funny moments to keep me watching.

A show I'm close to giving up on is 30 Rock, this season has been awful.

I saw the first five minutes last night and had to ask the lady why Jim was sitting at his old desk. She started to explain but I lost interest in even hearing the synopsis.

This show jumped long long ago. Ricky did it right pulling the plug on the original early.

Plus, anything that comes on AFTER Community has it's work cut out for it.

I'm a fan of Amy Pietz from the underrated Aliens in America, so it's good to see her here... hopefully we'll delve more into her character...

I thought Michael's story was quite relatable, guess that's why I enjoyed it so much, though the beats with Jim and Pam (Pam being wishy-washy followed by Jim going "WHAT?") got quite repetitive...

It, like this season has been, was okay...

And the addition of Olyphant's character might provide an interesting dynamic.

But yeah, it wasn't the best. Not to mention far-fetched.

It almost seems like they are trying out different things to see what will work, like testing out if Andy as the new focus of the show.

Even the brand of humor seems different (more insider jokes and obscure references).

but went right to the same "Michael Scott bails out of a bad decision halfway through."

I thought they were going to build up to Michael becoming a man of the cloth, which would have been a novel way to write him out of the series- fits into his desire to have lots of "children," or friends that couldn't deny him, and his desire to be part of something.

But nope; they just had him be a big upper-middle-class wuss, like they always do.

Why they always be going somewhere? Last week it was the baby's christening...this week a Glee party? The episodes outside of the office have usually been the weakest and now they're doing it every week?!?

There was so much wrong with these last 2 episodes I wonder why I still watch this show. I know it's been going downhill for a while but it's gotten ridiculous.

It's like the end of a relationship: you know it has to end soon, the bad times are getting more frequent, the good times less so, and the lovable tendencies have become expected annoyances.

still, every once in awhile you have a nice time together. that was last night's episode.

Kevin exploding over the candy

Erin trippin off Holly's unattractiveness

Holly and Michael doing their "lazy mexican voices" and Jim's reaction

Jim getting sonned by Dwight .... I loved this the most

Best episode in years

Second best part was Jim's reaction to getting Pam's comic book

Oscar's reaction to the gay senator was very funny

Loved that Darryl was given a storyline

I thought the Michael-Holly stuff meandered but is apparently going to be necessary down the line

They are however many seasons in and the documentary that's been filmed this entire time has never been screened? The UK Office, the documentary came out after season 2 and before the Christmas special, but this one hasn't? Are they just cheaping out on that aspect of the show, married to the concept as a device and not following through with the rest of it?

I think they've kinda abandoned that idea, to some extent... The documentary conceit is still there, but they sure take a lot of shots that probably would not have been caught in a real doc.

Scott and Brent?

And I better not hear shit about "the hype," we just learned about it a week ago and knew that it was going to be brief, so saying "they hyped it up too much" is bullshit

I thought it was a neat little scene, it was cool to see David Brent again. I was hoping for a "... yeah?" or two, but I'm happy with what I got...

You know, people tend to overlook Steve Carell's acting cause a lot of the Michael stuff is over the top but last night's ep was amazing. Carell acted his ass off.

Perfect ending to that episode.

Just look at the role he had on 30 Rock and the time when GOB was the president of the Bluth Company for proof. He would be a perfect replacement.

It's a good thing Running Wilde sucked, this would be a much better use of his talents.

I'm fine with it the way it is, they really just need to end the show altogether but it certainly wouldn't be improved by a Jim/Pam rift.

It really wasn't in the usual vein of the Office but I was cracking up. That episode was hilarious.

the show has clearly changed. I still watch it, but this season has been more outlandish (musical openers? actually filming Threat Level Midnight...which was funnier read as a script) than anything they did from S1-S3.

the show has ran it's course as it is now.... either the new boss gives the show a much needed shot in the arm or it dies without Steve Carell. Both options are better than it just going along as it exists now.

Michael's proposal made me realize why I usually hate wedding & Baby episodes of TV Shows (even including the office). Weddings & Babies are usually a short cut to illicit an emotional response from an audience. If the audience is not invested in the characters and the characters didn't really earn a happy ending, then weddings and babies are just a cheap trick for ratings.

As far as Michael Scott falling in love, I can't think of a character on sitcom TV that you have pull for more to grow and find happiness. Michael Scott earned that moment, which made it all the more enjoyable for the audience.

The show has gone downhill so hard and Michael has become so unlikable the last few seasons in an attempt to make him funnier that it is easy to forget the Michael Scott everyone loved and pitied the first few years.

The one who's goal as a kid was to have 500? babies so none of them could say no to being his friend, not the one who was just over the top because it was the only way to try to make him funny after a few years.

Michael has to go because the show needs some type of new life to get it going again, but that episode made me wish he wouldn't and that we could go back to season 3 again.

Deangelo Jeremetrius Vickers and Michael Gary Scott killed it.

Key moments:
"Choose something from your world"
"I have vienna sausages and...napkins"
Creed nodding on the trash can
Deangelo's jokes and the responses
Erin's announcement!

And so much more.

although peter king (sports illustrated) thinks it's painfully unfunny. i don't know, it's hilarious to me. but i've long acknowledged that my barometer is broken when it comes to the office. it's on the simpsons level for me now, where i pretty much enjoy anything they put on the screen and can watch reruns 24 hours a day.

His character is woefully underdrawn and the script seems to be struggling to find things for him to do.

Even if it means recycling old stories, such as his first appearance on the show... which was essentially a rewrite of Idris Elba's first appearance on the show.

Deangelo Vickers has been not funny at all... He's been distracting.

I'm still not completely feeling Will Ferrel's character but I was busting up repeatedly during this episode. Just a few highlights for me:

* Michael egging Toby's house
* Meredith's walk of shame
* Stanley cracking up at Michael's Phyllis impression
* Dwight's sound cues at the Dundies
* Darrell showing up to the meeting in a cowboy shirt
* Jim's talking head about how he was not at all interested in Erin's relationship

I like most of his work, but he was unfunny for most of his short run. he was like the complete asshole version of Michael Scott, without the redeeming pity or delusion that the jokes were all on him.

as for the series, I'd like to see it end next year as well. there's really nowhere else to go with these characters: Jim and Pam are married, have a kid, and totally insufferable -- their arc is done; Michael has found true love and is gone; Nard Dog and Erin have been yo-yo'd so much that nobody cares about them; Ryan and Kelly have nothing left to give; and the rest of them are stuck doing the same gay / fat / uptight jokes they've been known for.

I mean sure there can be some funny jokes here and there into the future but there is literally nothing left to do with any characters. All they can do is ruin the legacy of this show by going more than 1 more season.

Dwight's "massage" of Kevin

And they won't do it but they should leave Creed right there lol

the Andy-Erin-Gabe triangle is a major downer. Gabe is not awkward funny, he's just a creepy stalker. it's too bad they turned Andy from a cocky idiot (remember when he went after Pam?) to a spineless idiot. now that Erin is single, having him send mixed signals like a high school virgin is not entertaining.

I laughed a lot at Oscar omitting "under God" from the pledge, though. Oscar has been one of the most consistent characters during the entire run.

too bad they showed Dwight shooting the gun during promo commercials, so you knew how the episode would play out. and I like I mentioned, the whole Andy-Erin thing is just really bad (did anybody's heart wrench at him walking away from her like a moron? I can't *wait* to see what happens when they finally start dating again!).

Like 1 what is the point of his character, he is more annoying than anything

And 2 what does he do there? I thought he was like Jo's right hand man and basically in charge of everyone but he clearly isn't. When he first came in he was the man bringing all the new rules from corporate but now he just sits around all day.

His addition to the show is piss poor

In response to Reply # 0

Sad thing is there will probably never be an episode as funny as this one again, I think that was clear last night. The best jokes were coming from the guest stars, not the normal cast members.

Everyone's gimmick is just tired, I used to love Kevin but now he is too retarded, him not knowing the alphabet is too far. All the characters are on this level of being caricatures of their old selves. They remind me of Snoop Dogg still trying to be Snoop Dogg but acting like a cartoon version of his old self.

That being said, they did an interesting thing by leaving no real candidate looking like a good one. I'm still pulling for Arnett but he seems out after his interview. Spader seems the most likely of the guest stars to get the job if they don't go internal.

I hope Darryl doesn't get it, I didn't like where they went with his character last night making him look so unqualified.

If it is Dwight or Jim I'll be totally uninterested next year.

I think this show has now become the 4th best show on Thursdays on NBC, they should move it and give Parks and Rec the 9 PM slot passing the torch to it as the #1 show

either way the show is really struggling without Michael. they need to figure out a new game plan this summer.

What I meant was that was the funniest it will be until the show ends. The best moments of the episode all came from people who aren't regulars on the show. The cast they have in place is going to get less funny each week until NBC pulls the plug.

I was thinking Jim, but I can't see it being him. They gave him the role before and he kind of sucked at it and he hated it. They would just wind up rehashing the same storylines of everyone thinking he favors Pam, Dwight trying to take him down etc...

That is the only sense that needs to be made.

He had it before and hated it, he turned it down when they offered it to him and gave Michael his sales job when Jo first took over, and he turned it down when Jo offered it to him in last week's episode.

Not saying its impossible that he will get it, but they have certainly done enough to show he doesn't want it and wouldn't go for it.

1) That was the most ridiculous premise. The sales manager is generally bonused off HIS EMPLOYEES (in addition to other things) so its not only stupid and bad practice but unlikely that a national corporation would have such a policy. The more Jim sells the more Michael would make. Any other policy makes no business sense.

2) If Jo wanted him - she'd change it. She's the fucking boss. They have made NO MENTION of this policy throughout this process. Why would ANYONE want it? Seriously. Ask yourself that. "I'm a manager that could make less than my employees and they know it."

This show is done so I'm not even sure why I'm arguing with you.

They did make mention of this practice

In the episode where Jo split up the co managers she originally put Jim in charge and made Michael sales manager, then Jim found out you have uncapped commission in sales and would make more money. Michael also realized this and then they fought with Jo over which one shouldn't be manager.

They don't have to keep mentioning things from past episodes to make sure you remember.

They put it out there that it is company policy and because of that Jim didn't want the job. They don't need to cut to a screen of him saying I don't want the job because I make more as a salesmen remember? They just assume you will.

As for everyone else, the only other salesmen who interviewed were Dwight whose reason for wanting the job is well stated regarding power, and Andy who is constantly referred to as one of the worst in the office so he probably does not make more commission than he would make as manager, so there goes that problem huh?

No other sales person from Dunder Mifflin interviewed. Guess it aint really that deep or hard, simple logic based around what we have been told and how characters act can lead us to assume this about Jim and why he was not a canidate.

If you want to talk about how thats not how a real business would work, take it over to hustle and also mention all of the other shit that goes on that would not go on in a real world non sitcom office.

It's one thing to have the guest stars that have no interest in joining the cast be one-off jokes but nobody looked like a good candidate. I imagine they'll either promote from within or it'll be someone we didn't see get interviewed.

And I disagree about it being fourth best, 40 Rock is every bit as stale, if not more. It might not be worse but it's certainly not better.

In response to Reply # 150

why was the writing for Creed and Kevin so on last night? that's what made the show so funny to me, everyone had their own moments. especially Ryan, he killed it with that line to Stanley, "Oh no, Stanley you're going to live forever" or something, that killed me. I gotta disagree, this was one of the stronger episodes this season. I keep going back to last season as the stale one. Like I said before, the office isn't coming with knockout after knockout, but it's still funnier than anything on the other networks. It's sandwiched between Community and Parks and Rec, so it doesn't have a shot of wow-ing people, but it is still funny.

Now, the shit w/ Darryl did piss me off, like how the fuck are you gonna make people turn on the guy? I didn't like that angle, or the whole Andy turning down Erin either. Hopefully they get their shit together on that fast. And who's saying they can't do a tandem boss thing w/ Dwight and Jim. Clearly no one else is a front-runner and this way they stay within the office. Idk if that's enough to carry the show, but with everyone writing them off, why not give it a shot.

Or go with Arnett because he's the funniest.

From his blog

Watching The Office finale may remind some of the Chris Martin episode of Extras.

"It's only Warren Buffett........
What are you doing in a paper merchant's in Scranton? It's mental."

If you're going to jump a shark, jump a big one.

Still we've a had a good innings. Ha ha.

I assume most people know I didn't do the US remake for the art. I did my version for the art. That's why I stopped it after a few hours of telly.

Don't get me wrong. I'm very proud of the US version. It was not only a very very good network comedy but it was also a massive success story. But you know, I did it for different reasons, ambitions and with slightly different emotional attachments to the project.

And once and for all... I would never ever in a million years take a permanent role in the show as an actor. It really would be fucking mental. You don't start a company to work on reception.

Can't wait to start work on the Chinese version. Bill Gates is in that one.

Anyway, as you may know there's been 10 years of The Office in some form or another.

the good:

Ryan 3.0 is hilarious. "little advice: try a day off from the whole Jim schtick. try caring about something -- you might like how it feels, James" was the quote of the night. Oscar is still funny, and Dwight has cache with me because he's carried the supporting cast for the last three years. Gabe left.

the bad:

Kevin has rarely been funny to me. he's best when leaving you unsure if he's apathetic or stupid, but for awhile he's been written as a mentally disabled person and overacted by Baumgartner -- everybody knows you never go full retard. Erin and Andy are still horrible. I was excited that they might be ending it, but Andy's last comment tells me they'll continue stretching it out. cameos were blah (Gervais included).

overall:

despite going on autopilot at times with Carell, this show is not working without Michael Scott. the absurdity, naiveté, and heart of his character was what made the awkwardness between his co-workers funny. now the remaining cast is overreaching to fill the void.

hopefully they can find an interesting manager, because they need a Hail Mary for next season.

There's been so many incarnations of that character, I can barely keep up.

That line to Jim WAS fire, though.

hence the small screen time, he seems kind of bigger than the role though. I know it is a big show, but he makes what 20 mil a movie?

They really really should have cancelled it and gone out with a bigger bang.

It's almost a chore to get through episodes now, which is disappointing because the season premiere was quite good. That Doomsday ep was so bad that I was tempted to stop watching the show.
