"Marvel's Daredevil (Netflix, 2015)"

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/10/12/nycc-marvel-gives-fans-first-look-at-daredevil-netflix-series

Now this looks like it could be quite good too. I actually really like that initial costume, and the cast is pretty cool too.

That was a damn good opening to the microcosm that is Hell's Kitchen.Setting the overall arch of the season and story of Daredevil. They nicely placed it in the world that the rest of the MCU lives in with the subtle nods to the Battle of NY in the Avengers.

I was afraid I wouldn't like Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Hudson as Karen Page/Foggy Nelson, but they're growing on me. Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil is nice, the action sequences are something else.

Can't wait til we get to met the rest of the players in Hell's Kitchen.

...maybe its the vodka talking, but i am LOVING this shit so far....

it doesn't mind being subtle when it needs to be, and it's in your face as it should be too....dark & textured...full of looming gloom and pending ... pending ...pending catastrophe....yes...i want to see this slow evolution of things...the steady bubbling & building of things....yes, take your time, do it right....

perfectly so...

...and at the same time...in one episode they gave me everything i wanted...heart, character motivation, tension & release...(great flashbacks to give the soul, excellent fight scenes choreographed to be believable yet friggin awesome....

I'm going to say it...this was furkin great...

if they keep this up and do this right....the story arches they could tell...the webs they could weave....(and yes, THIS may be a way to weave in Spidey in the right way)....but that aside....Dardevil, Power Man & Iron Fist....the Defenders....Hells effin Kitchen....

DAMN its so great to be a comic fan in this era aint it??!!!!...

One take, hallways scene, even the colors was a nod to Oldboy.

It wasn't touching the Oldboy fight scene, but it was pretty great. And maybe the best I've seen on a TV show.

I want to see how dude plays The Kingpin, but so far this show is fairly well done.

Funny, it would be cool to ultimately see how it ties into the rest of the Marvel Universe...but I almost don't want it to.

I'm not enjoying the subplot with Foggy and the secretary but the rest of it is real good setup. Glad to see they're giving Daredevil the darkness he deserves, too. When he dropped fake-FBI guy off the roof it was everything I hoped for when I started seeing the hype for this show.

Let the other Marvel guys have their happy go lucky sad-but-not-really adventures. Murdock over here dropping fools.

I have a few gripes, but I mean this is one of the best things Marvel has done so far.

My gripes *SPOILERS*:

*SPOILERS*

The red suit doesn't show up until the last 15 minutes of the season. Come on son. And his baton doesn't have the grappling hook.

Foggy finding out about Matt/Daredevil.

Killing off Ben Urich, who's a major character in the Marvel universe.

Even though I enjoyed it, the last episode needed a better director cause that final fight between Daredevil and Kingpin was lacking the umph of the fights from the rest of the season.

*END SPOILERS*

All in all I can't wait for AKA Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist. and The Defenders. But I really can't wait for Season Two of this.

Everything now seems like child's play after watching Marvel do a hardcore R-rated show...

Decent, I like that we get to see the relationship that Fisk starts with I'm assuming to be his wife down the line.

Once again more ass kicking. Vondie Curtis Hall as Ben Urich is a nice touch, though i'm hoping he gets more into the United Story and not just on the edges trying to help Karen through. Speaking of Karen Page, Deborah Ann Woll just looks so goofy, I can't wait til they get to heroin addict Karen Page.

Lastly is Rosario supposed to be the Night Nurse? Cause I"m a bit confused.

she eventually becomes a doctor, opens up her own clinic and freely treats ALL the superheros in NYC because they clearly can't go to a regular hospital.

so I could easily see her do a good 4-8 episode arc for EACH show and pop up in The Defenders also....

she'd have to because she manages to pop up in Daredevil, Luke Care, etc. in the comics if i'm not mistaken.

to test if it's possible to pull that off with a SUV door. Of course it would be impossible to pull off, but I'm curious if that scene is actually possible in the real world.

Welp now we get to see the Kingpin really come into play. Just when I thought the adventures of Foggy and Karen were getting boring, BOOM!

this really feels like reading a run of a comic, the way the stories lines connect, the action sequences. Hell even the lighting for the show.

There's a connection with those blind bombers and Murdock's blindness I know it.

I still think the chemistry between Murdock and Nurse Wifey is off. in some scenes it really works, in others it feels forced because of the dialogue

Really great comic book adaptation.

SPOILERS

*So many MCU easter eggs. The complexity of weaving the stories and characters together is a comic book nerd's dream.
*The cast is on point
*The Electra reference was nice as was the Hand | hopefully she will arrive next season or in season three
*Adding The Punisher would be great
*Look forward to the other Netflix/Marvel series, especially The Defenders.
*Surprised how violent and bloody it is, yet they can't say fuck. They say shit, asshole, and show someone impale himself through his head, but fuck is too much.
*Great writing and cinematography for a TV show.

In addition to the action and acting in the main story, the flashbacks work very well. Nothing much else to add since I don't have much insight since I'm not a comic book reader, but am I the only one that hears a faint Irish/Scottish accent from the actor playing Daredevil?

I'm not complaining at all and so far this is five star material IMO, but did they have to be TV-MA for it to be such high quality? IMO, some of the violence shown could have been implied or shown off screen and the show still would be high caliber stuff. Mainly asking to see what people here think.

**edit**

And for the folks that read the comics, how faithful to the comics is this show? Any changes from the comics at all?

in some ways i think it kinda did have to be TV-MA. Daredevil doesn't have super strength so his fights tend to be more brutal which leads to a lot of blood and broken bones. not to mention Kingpin's brutality is also shown. it's very different type of hero show than they've done before so it does make a bit of sense with the whole "street level" vibe.

it's been a while since i read the old Daredevil stuff, but it would seem like they're more going for the look and feel of the Miller stuff as opposed to straight adaptations. like that black suit he wears is straight from the comics.

44. "best thing Marvel has done since X-Men: First Class"
In response to Reply # 0

(yeah, I finished it already ... I'm on vacation y'all ...)

and I really think the strength of it is the way it's located in ONE location, it has a FIXED set of heroes/villains, and it doesn't get pulled too far out of field by all the tie-in shit. This is what happens when you DON'T cross over too much, you DON'T have to deliver a 20m actions sequence in the third act that costs 2/3 of the budget, and it's great. It actually pays to have a narrow, grounded focus, as the stories and characters actually become interesting and complex.

Still, I noticed them using the Arrow formula of flashback (to great effect) and I couldn't stop calling Foggy 'knock-off Cisco' for basically the whole show. Marvel 'grittied' it up, bumped up the target demo age bracket by a decade or so, but it definitely felt a LOT like they had done their homework in watching Arrow/Flash (although, thank god, the love triangles didn't rule the stage). I know, I know, all comic book super hero stories are pretty well established genre pulp, but compared to Agents of SHIELD and even that Agent Whoever show, this was light years ahead in keeping the thrill ride pretty steady with the ebbs and flows throughout.

Good stuff. I'll say at times I felt a bit like you could see the stretch marks on a movie script (the arcs / beats are pretty straightforward and could be re-laid onto a rush 120m structure if needed), but the quality throughout, plotting aside, makes this the best Marvel entry since I can't remember when. I'll shed a little tear when they start crossing over, because they definitely have enough here to just let Daredevil adventure through his hood.

PS -- should add, for admitting bias sake, Daredevil is the only Marvel weekly I read any more....

Guardians of the Galaxy was solid entertainment, but Daredevil more than delivers on the boilerplate moral philosophizing that underpins the best comic pulp, and an entire series gives all the characters sooooooo muuuuuuuch mooooooore room to breathe.

Take this plot arc, make it a two hour movie, and maybe Guardians of the Galaxy would have a case.

stiiiiiiiick!

another PERFECTLY cast role.

this show is Marvel at its best. really it is. for me, its right there at the top sitting on the throne with the first Iron Man.

the details they are paying such close attention too....the CHARACTERS that they are developing....taking their time and actually DEVELOPING and fleshing out....and i'm NOT just talking about the main characters either, sure, they are doing the main characters right and thoroughly, but i'm also talking about the smaller characters too....they have made them and their motivations so real that i care and/or am impacted by what happens to them, i feel the tension of their choices ....i mean cmon...(spoilerish) the cop who got shot, his partner sitting there with the Kingpin? That scene.....i GENUINELY felt that cat's struggle....i actually remember feeling & thinking & wondering... 'damn, what would i do in that situation?'....these arent generic cardboard cut out characters (ala what you might see on any given CSI show)...no, THESE are written as genuine real human beings in situations where they must make personal choices and they do so in believable well written words that sound and feel authentic....its not always about plot twists like so many shows rely way too heavily upon....the magic HERE is that its about plausible yet sometimes extreme predicaments...honest motivations and human consequences of choices made....

THATs the shit that will pull you IN....THATs the shit that pulls ME in anyway

its the little things man, the little things....

and the Kingpin origin story?? wow....i mean....wow....

i can't even remember if that was in the comics or not, but it was SO good and powerful & believable here that it absolutely does not matter WHAT the origin was in the comics....THIS shit here? gold....absolute gold....Marvel...you should be damn proud. this is some seriously awesome and impressive work here....

if they keep this quality up with the rest of the Netflix series ....wow....thats on some next level stuff....

(and for the record, i don't care we don't EVER see the crimson suit...this show is so damn good that he could stay black mask guy for the whole damn thing and i would be TOTALLY satisfied......such an effing good show....

Fucking Stick!!!
The nailed it pretty damn good with Scott Glenn. I love Terrence Stamp but man was that Stick terrible in Elektra

I'm sooo geeked that they are referencing some of the mystical aspects for Daredevil with the shadows and Yakuza/Hand. They really did their research and tried to fit in as much of the good parts of the Daredevil series as possible.

I'm that n more of the COTW, guys have chimed in yet.

Loved how they introduced Stick in the cold open.
LOVED the flashbacks! Man. That conversation on the bench in the park?
LOVED the fight scenes between Murdock and Stick.

Man, this episode had everything.
And then that ending?

What a great way to inject some life half way through the series.

it's getting too comic booky now. I liked the noir realism and brute violence of the first 5 eps.

now it's getting very suspend my belief to accept certain things about DD and the surrounding world.

also all the warrior philosophy with Stick got corny really fucn fast

and yup Page and Foggy have gotten very annoying and the journalist subplot is just forced right now.

its bordering very good right now, it was great

Well it is a show based on a comicbook, so I expect it to reference and bring in a lot of the elements of the comic.

So wait you didn't suspend your belief that there's a blind ninjas with heightened senses running around Hell's Kitchen beating fools up? I'm going to take it you don't read a lot of DD. Also if you don't like this you're not going to like Iron Fist cause he's mystical as shit.

Naw they are great, a bit annoying but they're central to the DD history and comics.

i just felt it overly relied on it with the previous two episodes, and it was most glaring in the dialogue

well it's not about not reading DD, I'm invested in the world at the world's sake, but in eps 6 & 7, DD was acting like Wolverine. Shit the living German brother survived a bomb, got his ass beat, took a shot to the rib, got his wound torched shut, and then FINALLy went out in the blaze of glory.

It's not the actual premise. the premise is fine, but in the first 5 eps it was operating in realism as much as super hero folklore fantasy. it's a fine line to tread.

>>and yup Page and Foggy have gotten very annoying and the

this does not matter once it becomes a live action piece. And it seems you are very reliant on the Frank Miller DD, even referencing when Karen becomes a he-ron fiend.

The writers/authors of this are allowed to take their liberties and I'd be more invested in that subplot, if it looked more like the news cycle world we had today and not a plot straight from the 80s. I would've prefered dude be younger, a blogger, struggling to make a living as a writer, but Page notices he reports truth online and comes to him that way. This old savvy journalist in the new world shit = yawn

>>its bordering very good right now, it was great

Best one so far. Not necessarily original, but it worked like hell on me

Took a little bit of inspiration from Punishermax, or am I wrong? I couldn't dig up or recall any other Kingpin origin stories

Herc did his thing

I would've been happy with Fisk just being bad and leaving it at that. Bonus

I think "focus" that I read above is as good as it gets. Where AoS is big, shiny, global, etc., this is like a magnifying glass on a neighborhood. I've never been to NYC to know how big Hell's Kitchen is, but for all this shit to be popping off, it seems like the entirety of NYC. The little Elektra dig was cool, but I'm glad it was just Kingpin vs. Daredevil. Maybe by season 2 or 3, they'll put him through Dark Knight shit and have him going up against multiple people from his Rogue's Gallery.

‘Daredevil’ Stunt Coordinator on Designing a One-Shot Fight Scene for a Blind Hero
"Even the remake of Oldboy probably had at least a couple weeks to plan. We had literally days."

“Marvel’s Daredevil”

Charlie Cox as Daredevil. (photo: Barry Wetcher/Netflix)

(This interview contains mild spoilers for the first two episodes of Daredevil on Netflix, so proceed with caution if you haven’t fully binged. I guess it also contains spoilers for Ben Affleck’s 2003 Daredevil, but I can’t in good conscious recommend you watch that movie.)

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Netflix’s first of four Marvel-centric shows, Daredevil, is like nothing you’ve seen under the Marvel Umbrella yet. What it lacks in the grand visual scope of say, an Avengers movie, or the lighthearted rompy-ness of a Guardians of the Galaxy, it makes up for in one critical area — it just kicks so. much. ass.

Blinded as a young boy, Matt Murdock (played here by Boardwalk Empire alum Charlie Cox) is granted the gift of having five out of six super-heightened senses, which he puts to use at night in his crime-riddled home town Hell’s Kitchen by throwing on a black mask and beating criminals to a pulp. Standing opposite of him is Wilson Fisk, AKA the Kingpin, played by a massively framed and impressively bald Vincent D’Onofrio. And that’s the story, a simple one, but it’s filled with enough darkness, impressive performances, and grounded reality to be worthy of your time. And the fight scenes, Jesus, the fight scenes. If you’ve watched through by now, you know what I mean. If not, I’ll wait.

Philip J Silvera has a hand in more super heroes punching each other in the face than I can count. He’s done stunt work — as a double, a performer, and as a coordinator — in everything from the Dark Knight Rises to Iron Man 3 to Thor: The Dark World. As Daredevil’s fight and stunt coordinator, he’s the man behind the kicking of ass in Netflix’s latest series, including a one-take fight scene in episode two that would make Rust Cohle blush.

I hopped on the phone with Mr. Silvera, who was in Vancouver working on set of Marvel’s Deadpool (Mr. Silvera designed that test footage that drove everyone crazy three years ago), to talk about making a blind man fighting child traffickers look so damn cool.

OBSERVER: I was completely blown away by the fight scenes in Daredevil. What was your mindset going into Daredevil, about how you wanted everything to look and feel?

PHILIP J. SILVERA: The best thing about these characters, super hero characters, is I want to see how the real world relates to them all. Steve DeKnight had a vision on how the characters should be, and I just try and build off of what they saw. But I really wanted to make sure these characters felt a lot more grounded. This wasn’t your Iron Man, this wasn’t your Thor, your Captain America, this was a guy that through sheer will and determination, he just keeps pushing through the pain of everything he goes through.

Was there any added challenges to designing a fight scene for a character that can’t see?

There’s always little challenges around something like that. Charlie Cox has such a great way of interpreting the character that we were able to play off of. At times, there would be the little moments in between knocking a guy down, how would he move forward on them? Would he take a moment to sort of feel where they are, or would he just go in for the charge already knowing because this is something he has done his whole life? He’s been blinded since he was a kid, so part of it feels like second nature by this point. It was just finding that middle ground of how to approach it.
rain Daredevil Stunt Coordinator on Designing a One Shot Fight Scene for a Blind Hero

Charlie Cox as Daredevil. (photo: Netflix)

The first notable fight scene comes at the end of the very first episode, a one-on-one confrontation between Murdock and an unknown assailant in the pouring rain. Unlike the 2003 movie, Daredevil does not use the rain to see Jennifer Garner’s sonar face. The two participants use the rain to beat the ever-loving shit out of each other.

The first scene I want to talk about particularly is the scene in the rain.

Right, that’s the final fight of episode 1. That was what got me the job, was previs-ing that fight.

Oh really?

Yeah, I think they were still looking for a very specific style. Something that told their story, and they offered me a chance to do a previs, to get the job. It was such a mix of so many different things they were looking for. And the rain was one of them. They wanted longer takes, and more of the boxing style, and grittier. They didn’t want it to look too martial arts-y, but still having style to it all. Within 24 hours I turned in a previs.

How much of that was Charlie, how much was a double, and how’d you go about things like that?

It was a good balance. Charlie would do a lot of things, and then there were things Charlie just wasn’t trained for. And we had a great stunt double, Chris Brewster, who worked great with Charlie. They had a great relationship. But Charlie did a great deal of it, and then the stunt double did things that just were physically out of Charlie’s training.

Can you take me a little bit through the layout process?

Well, number one, the first thing I want to make sure of, it has to relate to the story. If it doesn’t relate to the story, it’s just punches and kicks for no reason. It has to constantly keep the story driving forward. After we do that, we have to find the tone of the fight. We’ll do a concept build, and off our concept build we’ll shoot a previs, shoot it all for approval. Then that’ll be our interpretation of what we think the fight will be like. Then Steve DeKnight, who has a great vision on things, and the actors involved will give us notes. And we’re doing this all in a quick turnover time. As you know this is a TV series, but we’re doing feature film style action. So, we’re constantly cranking one scene to the next. We’re constantly in go mode. There’s no room for error. Early on, there is a great scene in 102 that definitely sets the tone for the show.
ÒMarvelÕs DaredevilÓ

Charlie Cox as Daredevil. (Barry Wetcher/Netflix)

The scene Mr. Silvera is referencing, that closes out episode 2, is the aforementioned one-shot, no cuts fight scene. Matt Murdock walks into a den of child traffickers, and what follows is multiple uncut minutes of doors breaking, punches flying and at least one person being hit in the face with a microwave.

I was just about to ask you about that one-shot scene.

I think this was what started defining the show for me, and the weight that was being played into it. Phil Abraham was directing, and it was always scripted that this scene was going to be a one-shot. For me in my head, with the time, we had, I said let’s do wipes and we’ll be able save things. But Phil challenged us to do a pure one-shot, which really just brought a grounded real feeling to the whole thing. We were able to slow down the fight, and just have this raw, animalistic feeling happening.

So it was genuinely one shot? No cuts?

No cuts. We did do a few Texas Switches between our actor and our stunt double, but it was purely a one shot fight. There were no cuts in that fight. Every performer, the actors and the stunt doubles, were in there performing that fight full on. I’d say there was a minimum of 105 beats, and they killed it.

And how many takes did you have to shoot?

I feel like our magic number was take around 7 or 8.

That must have taken some planning.

Well it was tight, because yeah a good amount of planning had to go into it but again, we had such a short amount of time to do that planning. We had maybe a few days to set up that fight. You know, most feature films would get weeks to rehearse something like this. Even the remake of Oldboy probably had at least a couple weeks to plan this. We had literally days. I felt like the New York stunt community stepped up in a big way. To me, it’s going to be a highlight of the show.
MARVEL'S DAREDEVIL

Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk in Daredevil. (photo: Barry Wetcher/Netflix)

How much did you get to work with Vincent D’Onofrio on figuring out how Wilson Fisk would look in a fight?

Quite a bit. He had his own thing, and I shot a previs for him, sort of envisioning how I saw his character play out, and I think we were on the same page. Obviously he brings something amazing to the table when he performs.

How would you compare designing a fight for Wilson Fisk compared to Daredevil?

I feel like they’re almost two sides to the same coin. They’re both doing things for their city. And it’s a tricky thing with their two characters. I think when you get the Fisk character to a certain point, it just becomes pure rage, and all thought process is out the window. His behavior goes into this rage mode, which I’m sure you saw.

The brutality is just relentless with him. When he gets into this mode, he just keeps going until he’s done. And that’s it. He will drive for you. That is the Kingpin, that is D’Onofrio. He’s a

too many times in shows like this there's some big reveal and there's maybe a brief moment of "WHAT?!" and they kinda move on. this to me was a little bit more of what might really happen if you found out your homie, who you thought was blind could actually kinda "see". not only that, but he has super heightened senses that you didn't know about before ("all the times that I was lying you knew?"). if all of that wasn't shocking enough he's also putting on a suit and fighting crime at night. that's A LOT to let sink in. and I think a lot of us would react in a very similar way. I'd have tons of questions personally.

it also showed that Matt is far from indestructible and needed time to heal up from getting that work from Nobu.

I'm down for subtitles but it's a really interesting choice. Really captures the melting pot vibe of New York better with everyone speaking their native tongue instead of speaking English and having the audience imagine they're speaking their native ala Red October or whatever.

If they are able to do aliens of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and have already introduced the Hand in DD, they can do all of that with Iron Fist, albeit I will more than likely be introduced slowly. I don't expect them to just up and throw Danny into the tournament in the first season.

you late! LMAO Jokes

but yea...Marvel and Netflix entered into an agreement back in 2013 I think where they'd created a huge deal to bring Marvel's grittier "street level superheroes" to TV. And they'd focus on Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and all those characters based in "Hell's Kitchen" (aka they're shooting in Williamsburg, etc.)

The deal was 200 million dollars to produce 60 episodes of television (aka each character above gets their own 13 episode series plus an 8 hour Defenders miniseries) aka each ep will be roughly 3.3 million dollars.

here's a link: http://marvel.com/news/tv/21476/disneys_marvel_and_netflix_join_forces_to_develop_historic_four_series_epic_plus_a_mini-series_event

Daredevil and Jessica Jones (they're saying fall/winter for her right now) will be this year. Luke Cage and Iron Fist will presumably be next year and they're also all teaming up to do The Defenders some time after the last of the four.

It was CLEARLY the right thing to do - but so often writers allow their characters to make TERRIBLE choices all in the service of a greater plot point.

between her killing Wesley and getting Ben killed, she's got some answering to do next season imo. as much as I hated to see Ben go, Fisk went full Kinpin at that moment to me. that whole "I'm here to kill you" was a bit on the nose but it was full comic villain.

it's really hard to compare a feature film to what essentially is a 14 hour miniseries. Netflix stuff will only be compared to other Netflix stuff for me. but it was up there with some of the best stuff I've ever seen about a superhero.

I mean...they nailed the look and obviously played up the fact that under all of that fat is loads and loads of muscle because he was choking and killing people the entire series....

But from my recollection of the comics...Kingpin was NOTHING if not self assured. He fought to get to where he was and I can't imagine a Kingpin that is literally at the mercy of his partners.

Add in the fact that they played up this "falling in love" angle......I just don't like the way they portayed him.

Also...his lilting dialogue is off-putting....it returns to that question of security.

I'm hoping that after he gets out of prison (which he will, of course)....they'll play up the blood chilling ruthlessness that defines him in the comic book series.

but even in the comics...he was also self sufficient and ruthless.

They did a good job of explaining how he always liked to be hands on...but it seems like he was forced to become something that he should just naturally have been.

Minor fanboy gripe but I see I'm alone on this

He killed it as Kingpin. Like someone else said, it was an origin story for him as well, and it was pretty clear in the last ep that he finally realized who he was.

The whole show was incredible. I enjoyed that more than TWD,Saul or GoT or anything else going on right now. Perfect casting, great acting, writing, and action. Can't wait for a season 2 and the other marvel series.

If we don't see him and the defenders in infinity war and/or some other films I'm going to be very disappointed.

I was in agreement with you to an extant through the first couple episodes with him but by Episode 9 (warehouse fight) it all sort of came together for me. Here's a man who really believed he could play both sides of the fence and be an altruistic man at the head of a criminal enterprise. It led him to be very careful with his words, in order too suppress what he'd prefer to say instead. Which might sound a little something like his fist hitting your skull rather than anything verbal.

further below i described him as 'BARELY keeping a lid on whats boiling JUST below the surface ...like a pressure cooker...', but simmering rage describes it very very well indeed...

Fisk ultimately resented & HATED his dad SO much, and i feel he now genuinely DOESNT want to be like his dad in that regard, but is obviously having some serious internal (and sometimes external) battles, throw-downs & conflicts with himself, fighting the fact that he may have (has) become that which he most hated... he's TRYING to keep it down, supress it....but that pressure cooker has been simmering and boiling & building... and THAT ish is about to explode...

any time he is on the screen you can FEEL the tension in the 'false calm' thats in the air...the pending...

sheeeet...he knows who he is...

dude is OWNING this role if you ask me...

plus...as to the criticism of kingpin seeming 'insecure' or something? well dont get it twisted...SOME of that is obviously part of the character playing DOWN his true motives & strengths to his 'partners' in crime...not letting them in on EVERYTHING he is capable of, aware of and contemplating...dude is complex and is playing a long term game of chess instead of an immediate game of checkers.... i LIKE that in this character...

in the comics he gets run out of the country by other criminal organizations from time to time. in the comics he had to go chill in Japan for a while cuz he got punked by HYRDA which was referenced in the series when he said he spent time in Asia (which is probably why he knows Chinese and Japanese so well. also probably why he even has Asian criminal underground contacts to begin with.)

also his wife has been the reason that he's given up crime for a while in the comics. so his love life as motivation has come into play before too.

all in all I believe they handled Kingpin very well as a guy who's just coming into his "King of New York" status as we're familiar with him.

I thought this version of Kingpin and the introduction was excellent. Their building up who he is from the start, we get to see an important par by seeing him meeting his wife who does become an important factor in his story.

in fact even though i'm not completely done with the whole season yet, but ALREADY i think he needs to get an award for his portrayal here....

it is OUTSTANDING in my opinion...

understated and supressed...keeping a very fragile lid on the rage and power thats boiling JUST below the surface...a pressure cooker, man...

its complex...it's the most interesting Kingpin i've ever come across... i wanna see him as much as DD...(dudes playing the hell outta Murdock too)

...but yeah, if you ask me D'Onforio's playing this shit PERFECTLY...

I love turning people on to this show who would never watch it.

I've shown early episode highlights, and they always give the "Oh shit!" or that o_O look at me, like "Super hero shit is like THIS now??"

there's a couple movies that are kinda perfect for the 2 hour format, but they really got to sprawl out and create a legitimately great series here. I know a lot of people who aren't particularly into comic book stuff, but I tell them if you simply enjoy crime shows you'll love this. Episode 2 (oldboy-esque hallway fight) and the Kingpin backstory are the highlights to me.

This pretty much describes me to a T, so much so I have zero interest in the current Avengers movie that's in theaters now. The main actor that played Daredevil definitely did his thing with the role. Also looked as if the show runners have a lot of respect for the comics since the action on the screen wasn't too flashy or dependent on special effects; just good reliable story-telling.

That season was SOLID.

Really though, I would be okay with them keeping the Netflix shows self-contained to Netflix and NOT tying into the Avengers. That shit is going to get bloated enough. Let this be its own thing. It doesn't all have to tie together.

But then again, I still don't see how they are going to do Infinity War without making it the hugest, most expensive flop ever. Like the Amazing Spiderman 2 times 100.

d'onofrio killing it as KINGPIN, looking like a malevolent big pun.

this muhfucka is seriously menacing, on screen.

and marvel is on some idgaf w/ this. we will write all of these great characters and then kill them off. we have no chill, whatsoever.

can't wait for luke cage and iron man, now.

peace & blessings,

Marvel went ahead with Punisher after Jason Statham dropped out as Bullseye after that news hit before he signed on?

Just a thought, b/c we haven't heard anything regarding casting about Bullseye or Elektra, it's been all Punisher based.
