it's techincally the same process as taking a sound and allowing an sp-1200 to process it. it replays the sample at a lower sample rate (in the sp's case, 8 bits(?)) and you get a sound that feels thicker because it's slightly distorted, and some of the original information in the sample is missing.

same process with mp3s you upload on soundclick, and the lo-fi versions. firstly, rendering to an mp3 is what they call a high-loss process, where the size of a sound or music file is greatly reduced (typically, 10 mb for one minute of lossless music file, as opposed to roughly 1mb of mp3 data at 128kbps). as you reduce to lower and lower bitrates, alot of the sheen that you'd hear from a cd quality track will be noticably gone. the lo-fi version on soundclick sounds like it's about 64kbps (kilobytes per second) which is really easy to download because it's so small (around 2 minutes of music for 1mb of filespace) but the quality of the reproduction is very low. but, as for dirty and thick, it will definitely increase those factors.

i don't know, does the mpc have a sample rate control where you can dial in the sample rate you want to use when sampling your drums in? i throw a bitrate reducer on the master in FL6 (they're readily available for free, lots of trance and dance producers use them on synths and basslines at extreme reduction levels to get really grimey sounds from digital synths) and drop the reduction level to about 12 or 14 bits and voila, instant mpc60/sp12/etc!

in short, cosign!

true the SP is 12-bit but the Analog to Digital converters are so much different than the MPC...you just can't recreate the sound with another machine or a plug-in...you can create a "new" dirty drum sound, but it won't necessarily sound that close to the SP...also a lot of the crunchiness of drums on the SP have to due with the fact that the pitch shift is actually a pseudo-pitch shift on the SP so the further you change the pitch from the original pitch you sampled at, there is a ring-modulation effect which adds those crazy harmonics that cut through like a dull-knife in the hand of a giant.

Zacktly. The SP sound is related to a lot of factors and is only partly due to the bit and sample rates. As far as I know no one has successfully emulated the typical sp sound.

Its 12 bits I believe. But yeah, same process. But the SP still adds something "special" cuz of the a/d algorythm of its audio engine

Ive known about this for a hot minute... You gotta save your drum sounds as MP3 with a low bitrate and then open it up and save it as a wave.

i've done what you're talking about and converting an MP3 to a .wav file does not necessarily "un-compress" the file...only relatively.

If I want my drum to have a dynamic or "big" feel I'll never use an mp3, only some lossless format.

but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do out of necessity

that bjork heard some of her tracks leaked on the internet during "Vespertine" and she liked the lo-fi sound of the mp3s and did something like converting individual tracks to lo-fi mp3 and sending them to herself and using them on the final version...I thought that shit was kinda crazy

Man, I'm always on a mission to PURPOSELY fuck up my sounds on some lo-fi shit..

I be using a old ass toy sony tape recorder sometimes..to get that lo-fi, semi distorted sound...

The whole trick is to make it sound POURPOSELY fucked up without making it sound like..you just got some fucked up equipment and you dont know what your doing..I think Timbaland (or Jimmy Douglus I shoulda say) is a genius at this..

Why would you want crappy drums? You need to step into the 21st century and do away with that "vintage" sound. Digital is the way to go. Grimy is so yesterday. Real producers, like me, only use high quality drums for songs. That "dirty" sound doesn't sell records. Do you hear Dr. Dre, Timbaland, The Neptunes, Scott Storch, Lil Jon, Jazze Phe, etc. using dirty drums? Hell no!!! They keep it clean so they can get paid. And if you aren't in this for money, you're are irrelevant.

Let it go son. You are not on my level. If you relax and humble yourself, I could give you some pointers. But talking "tough" to me is only going to leave you...

that asshole's right. kinda. why the hell would you want to make your drums more dirty. i can see for a particular song wanting to have a lofi effect. but a generally 'dirty' beatmaking aesthetic. naw, yall can have '92 all to yourselves.

Hell, I tend to grunge up drums, more than anything, for an industrial fusion effect or simply to get sounds a little more aggressive. But I also like to grab dry drums and engineer them from scratch, so it's almost a necessity to keep the tone palette open.

crystal clear drums, just like every song doesn't call for muffled joints.

i'm not trying to make that my SOUND. i'd use it sparingly like any other effect.

If you're in the digital world. Send the Drum track to a bus that has a Guitar Amp filter w/ some bitcrushing on it, then use a hi pass or low pass filter to see which end gives the right type of grit. since the effect is taking place on the bus, it will make it easier for you to edit/automate.
