i didn't believe the idea that my laptop didn't have enough MEMORY (RAM) to run the m-audio mobilepre...but then i hook it up and all i hear is crackin sounds, ALOT OF LATENCY....just horrible...and its brand new right out the box i know for a fact the mobilepre is solid..but i have a gateway solo with only 256MB (RAM) ..and my laptop is a mini laptop that only has 1 RAM SLOT that only allows me to upgrade to 300mb max....i can't even get a GIG...
so thus thats the reason everything else doesn't work with my laptop THE MIXER, THE U-CONTROL INTERFACE, Audio Technica AT2020...so i'm just selling all of it....because its no way in hell i'm spending 800+ on a computer with 2 GIGS OF RAM..then if i spend that much i might as well..spend 600 dollars on MBOX AND PRO TOOLS..thats almost 2 grand + on a studio setup...i'm not cheap..i just can't afford it. -------------------------------------- Batman: I do my best work in the dark. and although it's not the end all, it will accurately take audio signal and store it, and you can transfer it later to a PC either via USB (as a hard drive) or thru the analog outputs.
There's a grip of others, too, for much more AND for much less, including several designed to be portable.
The MobilePre would still have to go, but you could maybe flip it for a standard preamp that would go between the mic and the recorder.
It'd be an investment, but a *much* more affordable one, and one that could keep you going.
^^^ i have this exact laptop but with 256MB RAM..its only upgradeable to 320MB RAM, even then..i doubt it can handle PHANTOM POWERED HARDWARE...i tried that mobilepre and it was alot of NOISE kinda like sound pushed to the max or something.
so i'm working on getting this new usb mic that just came out MAY 2007 here's a video of what its "suppose" to do.
I already have a Samson C1OU USB MIC that i've been recording with...its alright..but i can't stand not being able to monitor my sound while i'm recording...
but i don't want to have to buy a new laptop, because i'm seriously broke!

If you wanna make something that people will be able to listen to, you'll have to drop 2k minimum. Its either that or just keep what you've been using from way back...because you've not heard that half of it. When you include monitors, a decent audio Interface, The DAC-1 is like a grand on its own.
Except you found some shit that fell of the back of the truck..get on them credit cards.

you have right now. Thats what sucks about getting cheap pieces just so you can do stuff right now. It's garbage once you get decent stuff. Do you have any friends with a decent set up that could let you record for the time being while you save money? Your going to need a quality laptop with a lot of ram, a decent interface w/preamp, a good condensor and quality monitors just to make some decent sounding music on your own. Of course some people can make do with a lot less because they have great ears, but those people are definitely in the minority.
