"DO NOT BOOTLEGG DILLA's SHIT"

or anyone elses shit for that matter. how disrepectful is this? and you think Dilla and his mom and his camp actually would want that shit? i know the shit is out there but show some sense. those beats belong to Dilla's estate. they got plans for that shit and in the end, any loot is for his still enormous med bills and for his fam to be able to eat.

show some respect and read the friggin guidelines. you know his fam sees this shit too, right?

let's get the term of "bootlegging" correct here.

Bootleg - To sell the artist material without the artist permission to do so.

Dan should have expressed that shit correctly before he posted this because it points a finger to a ton of cats without nailing what the proper definition is. Having said that.....Wally...you fit. Not because we 'say' you did but because 'you' actually did. You can downplay the event all you want by saying that you did a joke and asked someone to pay for it on ebay and then did a sike a boo boo when he offered money. Point is.....ebay don't work like that. You have to set up an account, you have to put up the device in question of being sold, you have to put up a number of days it's open to bid on this item. With all that being that....THAT'S AN INTENT TO SELL. Period.

For a man like myself who respects Jay Dee wholeheartedly....that kind of "joke" wouldn't even have crossed my mind to perform. Now...since you see fit to be houseshoes jr. and pop up in almost every post dealing with Dilla and tell folks what's violating and what's not why....on earth....would you perform a fucked up joke like that on anyone when you claim to respect Dilla so much?

Second. Since you run and tell houseshoes that Obsidian put up a link to beat tapes that circulated way before dilla passed.....did you tell Ms. Yancey that you are selling a Dilla T-Shirt that you designed? Is Ms. Yancey, Dilla's brother, his two kids, sister seeing any of those proceeds? If not.....that's bootlegging too.

houseshoes....say what you will about my man's music or my crew for that matter...but we aint your enemey or Dillas. Where were you when DVS put up a thread talking about if he ever hit the lottery how he would donate more than half to Ms. Yancey herself and he got CLOWNED by everyone in there. This was posted in General Discussion and folks in this thread...CLOWNED him too. Now this is a man who is saying he would donate MORE THAN HALF to a mother of a man who he's never even met. DVS has 4 kids, a brother, a sister, a wife. And he's talking about donating it to Dilla's mom. houseshoes.....where were you? Wally.....where was your reporting skills? Anyone?

Also....houseshoes....where were you when DVS made a post in THREE parts talking about how he PURCHASED the entire PACKAGE that okp is promoting and hasn't seen it YET?? Where? Notice I said three parts. THREE. He made three different post asking where something he PURCHASED is. Your barking would have came in handy on any of those posts houseshoes. But naw.....you here...acting like you protector of the keep. That's bullshit.

Besides the funeral(and I have a few issues with that too). There's some parts in me and I'm sure a number of fans that feel Dilla wasn't sent off right. You barking about how DVS is disrespecting Dilla on a board that's dedicated to him? Did you see this board before we the people chimed in on how fucked up it was? This shit was a ghost town. Dedication songs are being made out the ying yang. Albums are being made out the word work to honor this man(one being done by us included) and you snapping cause folks is trading something that was already out? Albums done by dudes who ROLLED with this man is sounding half assed and not even spit with passion and you jumping on a moment of file sharing? Please tell me you're kidding.

I can speak for everyone in OMNi when I say they respect every thing that is Dilla/Jay Dee/James Yancey. Thanks to my respect for his music my whole voice has changed. I screamed the chorus for "Ice" by my damn self in Detroit until he came back on stage and performed it as a encore while folks looked at me like I was stupid. Ripped my vocal chords to the point once they healed up I can't hit the same pitch I used to anymore. But it was all worth it to see the look on Dilla's face when he came back out to perform the track.

A link went up containing material folks already had. That's not bootlegging. We aint the problem. That material was already released and deny it if you will.....but that link probably educated someone on who he was to make them want to go and dig and buy something else of his. Your source ....you may want to give him a good talking to though. And if my man's material is still wack to you after all that....then fine. But pick a better forum for your insults.

Your wrong on many fronts in this post Lunchbox... but I'll let Shoes handle all that.

What I need to speak my mind on is that this material was NOT released... it was burned, bootlegged, copied & passed around. Dilla didn't want it around, he didn't like it. I don't care what you say about "Bootlegging"... If Wally did what everyone says he did, then he was VIOLATING... but putting UNRELEASED material out there ain't right.

I haven't been around this OKWorld for very long, only since late february when I heard folks like Black Thought & Skillz were leaving notes on the boards... I wanted to read them, then got compelled to post myself.

I'm here now & if I see people putting Dilla material on these boards for public consumption, I will continue to put folks on blast. Playing it for your friends or directing them to a place where they can listen to the material is EDUCATION, what your talking about is stealing the text books from the classroom & taking them bitches home for yaself. I wasn't here on the boards when all these violating cats your talking about was doin what they was doin... but I'm here now & I'm not going to be spoon fed bullshit.

but not completely. My opinion on bootlegging is real simple. In the tree of things from birth to public ....it comes from the artist. Then through his camp, then through his label, then manufacturing, then us. When I say those beats were released....signed artist have rhymed on quite a few of them joints. That's what I meant by that. Be it on their mixtapes, albums or what have you they rhymed on them.

If he didn't like that they were put out there.....how did they get out there? I have 4 finished albums in my possession right now. They not on soulseek they not on aim, they not found anywhere because I keep my shit air tight until time to release. If Dilla didn't want them released, burned, or bootlegged....who is responsible for that? It damn sure aint us. I don't know where Dilla makes his beats. I don't know where his house is located. I don't even know who his circle is and probably couldn't point them out in a lineup aside from houseshoes and ?uest or Common. SOMEONE near his camp is responsible for the leak.

To point blame at us....that's rediculous.

But.....as I'm willing to listen to other perspectives I'm advicing you to do the same. The manner in which you going about your approach...it's other ways shit can be done and screaming on Dillas fans aint the one that should be in the forefront.

If anyone on here....you included.....has made a beat and not paid the person you sampled ....then they can not stand to the side and point fingers at how Dilla's fans is coming across his released or unreleased material.

We all want to help his mother. Somewhere in your heart you have to believe that.

I believe that MOST of you out there actually care about Dilla & his family.

Look, I listen to every perspective... but your still failing to see my point bro. People on here are as much to blame for the "spread" of dilla's unreleased beat tapes as the people who originally burned them... especially from what I've heard from people in the forum... they say that the OKP board has had a HUGE part in the "spread" of unreleased tapes. The point is, why condone something like PUBLIC file sharing of dilla's material, especially given the current circumstances?? If those beat tapes do get released & everyone has ALREADY got them, who, besides the most loyal fans are going to go out & buy them when they can go onto lemonwire & download the shit for free?! The mentality of those who originally leaked the shit & yours are one in the same. You love the music so much & you don't want to wait for it's official release, so you do whatever you gotta do to obtain said material. That's may be love for the music, but it's going a step too far.

Your "simple" opinion on bootlegging isn't simple at all man... it's mad confusing. Those beat tapes were NOT released... just because De La used this beat or Busta used that beat doesn't justify people putting them on p2p or file sharing networks for public consumption & it does justify the beattape as a piece of "released' material.

By the way, Ridiculous is spelled R-I-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S.

You say you have 4 finished Dilla albums... which I don't believe... but for the sake of argument, I'll pretend you do... you say you keep them air tight until the time of release? What do you do with them once the album is released? Burn it for whoever wants it?? Share those albums too because now their officially "released"?

Instead of tying to correct my spelling how about trying to catch my correct message? I have 4 finished albums from MY camp. And it won't be spread unless I want it to be spread. So my point still stands. If he didn't want them released....someone in his camp is responsible for them being leaked....not the public. I didn't say spread...I said "leaked". They would have nothing to spread if it wasn't leaked in the first place.

I'll correct your spelling & your attitude bro.

Read your own quote genius... "I have 4 finished albums in my possession right now. They not on soulseek they not on aim, they not found anywhere because I keep my shit air tight until time to release." Any normal person would think, given the context of the conversation that you were talking about Dilla albums or beattapes.

LOL, ofcourse your ish isn't on soulseek or whatever p2p you use...your people must not really be feelin your ish cause if they was, It'd woulda been passed around & around by now.

Case in point, my people, Ty&Kory... their first mixtape got passed around & around & around & around & around until it ended up in DJ Jamad's hands, then it ended up in Benji B's hands then Gilles Peterson's. That's how shit circulates if your shit is dope.

What on earth are you tryin to say??

What does... for example... me sampling a 45 of whoeverthefuck for a beat that I haven't sold, haven't marketed & haven't profited off of have to do with this conversation? That's a real FAR stretch for this arguement.

I realize you'll try to say that sampling that artist & not paying them is the same because I haven't profited off of it, I haven't sold it or marketed it... but it's NOT.

The MAJOR DIFFERENCE is that the 45 in question was an officially released piece of material, it was meant for release to the public, it wasn't downloaded from a p2p... & if said beat was to ever be released, then whoeverthefuck would get payed.

You have sure have a distorted view of reality bro. If I buy that person's record... then I've done the family a service. If its given to me or if I download it from the internet, it's doing NOTHING for the family. If I sample that person's record, yes, that person would get payed, but NOT until that record is ready to be pressed.

The point is that if it was UNRELEASED in the first place... have a conscience & do the right thing. LEAVE IT ALONE until it gets released.

So your saying if I BOUGHT the album, I don't have the right to sample it & make a beat? You've lost your cot damn mind.

I probably don't have HALF of the dilla unreleased material but I'm not actively going out & tryin to find it either... & I'm not trying share the shit that was given to me... I know it will ALL eventually be released so I am patient. I heard patience is a virtue... most cats can't excercise it.

I understand you've bought his material... you've stated that several times.

With all you've said... you condone public file sharing of anyone's material. That's on you... your decision... but I just don't want to see it on this board or anywhere else. That was my point from the very beginning.

I totally agree. We have a small clothing line called Illa-Strationz. which can be found at Illastrationz.com . We actually pressed 100 shirts that payed tribute to Dilla and we donated some of the money to the J Dilla foundation at Jdilla.org . We did not get permission to do the shirt. I just really liked the illustration the Blokt designed and I wanted it on a shirt for myself and some friends. I wound up distributing the 100 shirts to various respected companies that are known for supporting the artists in posative ways like Undergroundhiphop.com and Mooseshirts.com . I do not plan on repressing that design and I have never heard back from the Foundation about the shirt but I did everything in my power to make sure they knew about it and I hope they at least liked the design. I do not support bootlegging in any shape. I feel the artists should get whats theres and I have nothing but respect for Dilla, his family and the people at Stones Throw

15. "Bootlegging is a way of life."
In response to Reply # 0

I believe that bootlegging is wrong and hurts the artist. But the truth is most people don't care about that stuff. They just want the music. There are more important things in the world going on than bootlegging. How about we talk about ways to prevent kidney/liver disease? This is a serious health issue that should be adressed. I believe that this would help more people than worying about bootlegging material. You people are so quick to ride the bandwagon. Be strong, like me!

I love how the moderators of this board are the biggest Dilla beat jackers out of anybody and I am not going to name names but that's just wrong.

There's some shit-for-brain's on this website that abuse the comfort of anonymity that the internet offers them... but you'll see that on any website.

I have a lot of ambiguous feelings about downloading. I personally don't think I have a problem with people downloading my shit that's been officially released, as a way of "testdriving". Hopefully they'll buy it if they like it. But lord knows... when Connected first got leaked, in all its unmixed, unmastered and unfinished glory, half a year before the intended release, I was ready to go bezerk like my man Michael Douglas in Falling Down.

In general, shit that wasn't supposed to be available to the general public should not be spread, period. But those beat tapes have been "out there" for a minute, and have been thoroughly talked about by some well respected heads, up to the liner notes for The Shining. Cats are gonna wanna know what the big deal is.

Bottomline is, everything possible should be done to make sure that the big homie's medical bills can be taken care of so they're no longer a burden to his family. Everyone that's looking out for that has got my full 100% support.

For as many good folks on this messageboard, there are just as many half wits like the dude, "Yadgyu" above.

As Shoes stated... if you can, you should really try to look at the original post if it still exists. I imagine it would anger you as well.

just my two cents.

your man's was prolific with his music. That has inspired love for his shit.

I DARE YOU to run up in a Prince forum and tell niggaz not to swap his unreleased material when he was sitting on a vault of music.

I DARE YOU to run up on a Miles Davis fan and tell him not to support x-y-z because he wasn't get paid off the files.

MAN, FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOU.

You ain't the keeper of his legacy. As a matter of fact....WE ARE. The niggaz that go through the trouble of getting every stitch of everything ever credited to the man so that WE CAN TEACH OUR KIDS.

Fuck you and this revisionist keeping of his legacy. You need to worry about yo own shit. F'real.

This is from a nigga that has donated to the Dilla Foundation, AND who's bought his entire catalog. You wanna get paid off his material. Release it and I'll be there buying it just like every other time he's released shit.

But you wanna tell me that I can't listen to something because it ain't time?

This ain't red light, green light nigga. Wake up and smell the era.

D

P.S. If that's a passing jab at my prowess as an MC...that's cute. Stick to the subject, limpnuts.

...but did for Dilla.

Now I'm not saying what was does was correct and I NOW understand where Houseshoes was coming from (peace, brah), but hopefully an understanding can come from this.

So the thing is this folks, no torrents. If your boy wants a copy and he's trustworthy, let that man (or female) have it. Why? Because as a Prince fan, he didn't really amaze me until I heard the boots. And Dilla beattapes did that for me. I study that jawn more than Tribe, Pete, Prince Paul, or Primo. And those were my top four cats when I was growing up.

And it's funny, niggas got mad at Loud Minority for doing a tribute to Dilla before he passed on. No money was being made from the project, just a Thank You and niggas shitted on that.

Again I understand where yall are coming from, but friends and family of Dilla shouldn't be shitting on the fans that show nothing but love for the man. And vice versa.

We are all dreamers...

Only the "true" fans knew about Dilla and his music.

How many so called hip hop fans knew about Dilla outside of Detroit.

Hell!!! How many fans knew about Dilla inside Detroit?

It took numerous articles just to inform the public right here in his own city.

This guy is keeping it realer than most. You OKFollowers can't lay a guilt trip on me either. People can do what they want to do. The same ones talking about don't bootleg Dilla have 50+ gigs of bootleg music and movies on their hard drives. They buy fake BAPE, custom Air Force Ones, and all sorts of other generic and artificial stuff. So take a break from hating on a KING like me and go back to living you meager existence being an "OK" individual.

Don't dare reply to this either. I have 'Ether' for anyone who is not on my level.

First of all, the snitching part.

The people who snitched are the biggest hypocrites because they were actually selling those tapes and owned them bootlegs.

Snitching is the correct term here. Why? Because a snitch is someone who does dirt, but gets others in trouble who did the SAME EXACT dirt or less by telling on them.

And them snitches were selling that sh*t and trying to make money off of it when Dilla was ALIVE.

F*ck out of here.

In terms of the "gatekeepers" of Dilla's legacy, why is it important now that Dilla is dead?

Why is it so different than when he was alive?

Remember, "Pay Dilla" when he was alive?

Why is it okay (pun intended) to own and brag about bootlegging when he was alive, but horrible and wrong when he is dead?

Because there were a lot of cats on here without and with ok's next to their username who had them bootlegs and bragged about them too.

Why was it okay (pun intended) to own or leak all those bootlegs when he was alive? Once they leaked they decreased in value.

Where was the uproar and outrage then?

If he could have made money from those beats then, maybe the money problems that exists now wouldn't be as large.

So, I say that to say, if mofos is acting like they are holier than thou now that Dilla is dead, but didn't say that when he was alive, they are hypocrites.

Really, everthing they say is null and void, and don't mean sh*t. Cuz its quite obvious, Dilla didn't mean to sh*t to them when he was alive. Because if he did, the same sh*t they are saying now, they would have said when he was alive.

<--- we've got bush!

Powerful Posting, Jambone. These same kats that are talking shit now, are the same fools that were actually bragging about the fact that they possessed those beattapes.Member of the 'Dilla gatekeeper Frat' would openly disgust said beattapes, and then pm eachother the tapes if one of the click didn't have it yet. I also remember when the 'snitch' was actually dumping them off at 20 dollars a pop. Funny thing about that was, The Gatekeepers were 'up in arms' about the bootleggin', not so much for the fact that it was wrong, but mainly because the 'Snitch' was allowing folks to get a copy of what they already had. They couldn't make 'insider' posts and snicker amongst themselves anymore. Hypocrites!

I am not one of those same kats you are talking about homie. Neither is House Shoes.

Check & see how long I've been posting here... since late february, 2006. Jambone should be talking directly to the cats that was doin this shit... not to the people who are tryin to make sure the OKPlayer producer forum that was dedicated to the man himself doesn't disrespect him in the same breath.

And for all of you who decide to ignore & keep bootlegging Dilla's music... I've got two things to say to you...

What goes around... comes around. believe that.

&

Your no fan of Dilla if your bootlegging his music, your pathetic.

for what its worth, im a fan of dilla's music, and always have and will support any of his projects that are released. if theres any unreleased dilla music on the net, im gonna find and download it. and if my people want a copy, i give them a copy. i respected dilla and his work, and i can sympathize with the fact that he left behind unpaid medical bills and "mouths to feed." for that reason, i supported the j dilla foundation and the shining lp and i encourage people that i know to do the same if they feel the music.

i just gotta say this, though- shoes; the way you are handling this is a mess. you are cursing people out and threatening them on message boards in an attempt to deter people from sharing dillas unreleased music- music that has been online and shared on message boards and p2p outlets for well over a year now. youre doing this because you feel that this will deter sales from any future product you put out in his name... from a marketing and branding perspective, youre destroying whatever it is that you are trying to protect and/or create. when i listen to dilla's music, the last thing i wanna think of is you and people threatening each other on a message board. you guys should come up with a better plan to try and achieve the desired results.

if I find a open Dilla/Jay Dee beat I'm a rock over it in honor of the man for projects such as mixtapes or non album releases. So when folks ask what beat is that I'm rocking to I can proudly say "J-Dilla".

thus...the hunt will begin for them to find this man's shit.

I brought a perspective. And from all this attitude yall slinging around...there's a reason why Dilla is the one that has touched so many folks and not yall. You not the POA on anything that is Dilla. If so....the hospital bills would be in your name. Not forwarded to Ms. Yancey.

Yall need to recognize that fact and back up a bit in yall approach. All that shit I typed and all you can say is "don't put links in the post..it's that simple"?

I've been tryin to have a sensible conversation with you this entire time BOX. If you really loved this mans music... you wouldn't support open file sharing on the OKMessageboard or anywhere else for that matter. If your gonna pass on a cd to a friend who's got real love for the music, I can't say shit about that & can't do anything to stop you or anyone else for that matter. But posting a open link for anyone to download is the same as going to a music festival with 25 burned CDRs & giving them to anyone thats interested. I only jab when I'm jabbed at homie.

What if I got 25 friends? I'm violating now??

If I SOLD those 25 burned CDRs at the festival, THAT is bootlegging and violating.

Nah, having 25 friends isn't violating... come on man. But in all honesty... would you do something like that?

I realize the difference between SELLING CDRs & giving them away... but it's the principle of giving them away in mass quantities to to mass amounts of people at once that doesn't sit well with ME. That's just the way I feel & I respect if yall feel differently.

but i got some shit to say:

Houseshoes - I have officially lost ALL respect for you. You are false in your representation of why you even care about Dilla's "legacy" .

Bootlegging in itself (as a crime) is about SELLING unauthorized material. You SERIOUSLY sound like the RIAA knockin' on people's doors and arresting people because they have a computer with 1000 songs on it they got from some random person on the internet.

Now pay close attention to this next part because this is where it gets crucial:

NOBODY IN HERE EXCEPT WALLYCHAMP HAS EVER ATTEMPTED TO SELL ANY OF DILLA'S SHIT WITHOUT HIS AUTHORIZATION.

File-sharing will go on no matter HOW many people you threaten. If it's not people here on okp, it will be people on other messageboards - and much like real-life, the REAL crooks ain't postin' SHIT about what they do, who they bootleg and who they give it to. So all of your shouts and threats are actually going out to those who actually appreciated Dilla and all the work he has done.

Does that make any sense to you? I hope so.

And apology or not, dissin' somebody else's music in a effort to make, prove or strengthen your point makes you look ALL FUCKED UP. Think about it.

If you're REALLY concerned about Dilla's legacy, stop the REAL bootleggers - SOMEBODY in Detroit was sellin' CD-Rs of Dilla's 2002 Beats (you know - the 5 volumes) - they made a compilation of their favorites and sold it. I know people who bought one too.

LOG OFF NOW, FLY BACK HERE TO 313 AND GET AT *THEM* MUTHAFUCKAS.

And to answer you before you suggest it, I did not buy one. I actually already have 4 of the 5 volumes - out of respect for who slid them to me, I will not share them - and I fully intend to keep that promise.

artbymotorcity: you know, you are proof positive that when people die, niggas lose their minds - and by that I mean:

a.) tryin' to overstate their importance in said dead person's life
b.) tryin' to act as if you were said dead person's best friend when the cat probably didn't even know who you were when he or she was alive.

Keep some perspective about your shit and think before you post ANYTHING. Lunchbox presented some great points and you refuted all o them with nothing but pure nonsense.

>false in why i even care about dillas legacy?

yes - that is wahat I initially started my thoughts with - and THEN, I proceeded to make points as to WHY I feel way.

Since you missed them the first time, let me restate them - and I REALLY hope you read EVERYTHING I say and adequately respond:

Bootlegging in itself (as a crime) is about SELLING unauthorized material.

SHARING MUSIC FILES IS NOT BOOTLEGGING.

NO MONIES ARE BEING EXCHANGED.

How do you REALLY think Dilla became the legend that we all believe he is? FANS SPREADING THE WORD AND HIS MUSIC. Yeah, he earned all the props he got, but if NONE of us in here EVER shared a Dilla beat CD, a Fantastic cassette tape (which as you know was dubbed a MILLION times over), or an mp3 of a Dilla song that only got released in West Bubblefuck, Dilla would be just another beatmake in his basement with thousands of records and a dream.

NOBODY IN HERE EXCEPT WALLYCHAMP HAS EVER ATTEMPTED TO SELL ANY OF DILLA'S SHIT WITHOUT HIS AUTHORIZATION.

HE TRIED TO SELL THE BEATTAPES HE HAS ON EBAY.

SOMEONE WHO REALIZED HE WAS A FAN AND WOULD APPRECIATE THEM GAVE THEM TO HIM.

IN CASE YOU FORGOT ALREADY, HE'S THE ONE WHO "SNITCHED" TO YOU.

A leak has to start somewhere - pipes don't leak water without being busted - just like tracks don't leak without somebody starting the chain - think about it...

And while you're at it, ask Wallychamp who HE got the discs from in the FIRST place - the answer might surprise you...

>jay was my friend bro.

NOBODY EVER SAID HE WASN'T.

You're a DJ - YOU of all people should know how this underground hip-hop shit works - are the rules supposed to change because your best friend dies?? C'mon man - for real...

Don't respond with emotions dog - read what I say and respond with logic. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you have the mental capacity to do that.

>you are off balance.

Once again, you didn't read anything I said - but the first sentence - then you went off. Read again.

>im not a dilla fan.

Who ever said you were?

As much respect as people have for Dilla's stuff, they're gonna buy the official shit when Madukes releases it ANYWAY.

If you're REALLY concerned about Dilla's legacy, stop the REAL bootleggers.

I'll repeat this since you missed it the first time -

A.) SOMEBODY in Detroit was SELLING CD-Rs of Dilla's 2002 Beats (you know - the 5 volumes) - they made a compilation of their favorites and sold it. I know people who bought one too. LOG OFF NOW, FLY BACK HERE TO 313 AND GET AT *THEM* MUTHAFUCKAS.

>im the only muthafucka whose calls he would answer when he was
>in the hospital and the rumors(which started here) of a coma
>started floatin.
>
>we broke bread.
>
>on several occasions.
>
>he was my friend u understand?

yes - i do understand. that was NEVER in question. once again, you didn't even read my initial post.

>and im holdin my bro down til i see him again.

You now holdin' Dilla down by threatening his fans on a messageboard man...

FANS TRADE MATERIAL.

BOOTLEGGERS SELL IT.

Is that clear enough for you?

>and thats from madukes.
>
>she told me 2 police this shit.
>
>and thats what im doin.

no you're not.

you ain't policin' shit by hollerin' at dilla's fans who trade his material out of love and respect for his work while the muthafuckas makin' money off of Dilla shirts and CDs that Madukes has no hand in are still gettin' paid.

Get on your job and:

A.) Get at them cats from the D I told you about earlier - you from here so you should be able to track 'em down

B.) Get at MAJOR LABEL ARTISTS WHO HAVE MADE MIXTAPES with Dilla's beats on them and them rapping over them - I.E. DE LA SOUL.

Let me know what you find out. If you're really "holding it down" for your "bro" and you TRULY have Dilla and Madukes' best interest at heart, you'll be surprised at what you find out.

Treble...

If the points I raised are pure nonsense, then why does this post right here even exist? Why did the MODs shut down the previous post with the links to download the beattapes & start this one?

When folks present points to me, they need to make sense & be relavent to the situation. LunchBox brought up some points... that he's a big fan, contributed to the foundation, etc. What I don't understand about Box's posts are how one can openly condone public file sharing of ANYONE's music, let alone Dilla's.

He brought up the point that people on this messageboard are not to blame for the file sharing of Dilla's music... I got that point... & he's right... they are not FULLY to blame... but if you condone it happening on the messageboard & you think thats all good, then your a PART OF THE PROBLEM as well.

I'm not overstating my importance in Dilla's life... I've been trying to say what I've said above & several times before in different posts.

Secondly... Dilla DID know who I was when he was alive... Believe me or not, I don't care. I know & that's all that matters.

because by mandate of ?uesto, people are not to supposed to be sharing ANY unreleased material from ANYBODY on these here boards.

You don't believe me? Ask him.

With all due respect, I disagree with you and here's why:

A.) In THIS generation, file sharing is the equivalent of me handing you a tape of some dope shit I want you to hear. By me passing that tape to you, I'm putting you up on some shit you would have NEVER fucked with in the first place. That's education. Don't let the record industry fool you into thinking that because the quality of mp3s are better than that of cassette tapes that the game is different.

REAL fans are STILL gonna buy the shit they've downloaded when it comes to the market for purchase...

B.) A REAL PROBLEM would be if ANY of these people downloaded the files, burned them to 1000 CDs, photoshopped some pics and artwork that depicts Dilla and actually sold it somewhere...

Oops - somebody already did that - and instead of going after them with a lawsuit, you & houseshoes are here threatening us - the fans...

WWDTOT? - What Would Dilla Think Of That?

>Secondly... Dilla DID know who I was when he was alive...
>Believe me or not, I don't care. I know & that's all that
>matters.

Cool.

Then please address the REAL issue of who's bootlegging Dilla (if you and houseshoes actually start looking for them) and make sure them cats pay for their crimes.

Leave the fans alone. We are breathing life into his legacy everytime someone else finds how great he was by hearing a song, beat, or rap he created.

Peace Treble. We agree on quite a few things. This being a new generation... file sharing being the equivelent of passing cassette tapes around. I just think that in a forum, such as OKP which is viewed by thousands of people a day isn't a place where stuff like this should be allowed to go on, especially the way OKP feels about Dilla & the impact he had on music. The fact that sharing has gone on here before I've been here & cats have done much worse than post a link to download... I take that all into account. I wasn't around here then & if I was I would have spoken up.

We agree that real fans will go out & buy the shit when it's released regardless. We also agree that the REAL problem is cats mass producing shit on their own accord, selling it & profiting off of the man. we've been looking for them & we will continue to... ENyce from NYC... prime example... was doing that exact same thing... we noticed, acted & he stopped selling the beattapes he pressed up & he payed. Plenty of cease & desist orders have been sent to folks doing just what your talking about... and those folks have or will pay jay.

Im not tryin to attack any of dilla's fans anywhere being that I'm a fan myself... I feel what ALL of you are saying... LunchBox & DVS... to hear some new dilla shit will make your day, right? It makes mine every time it happens. It just kills me to see such blatent display of sharing here in the producer forum.

I'm with your Treble... playing dilla's music to a person who has never heard it is the BEST way to breathe life into his legacy... it's the manner in which people do it is my only issue.

So think about this:

>It just kills me to see such blatent display of sharing
>here in the producer forum.

I just copied what you said you could re-read you OWN words. I did this to prove a point.

Once again, YOU said:

>blatent display of sharing

you DID NOT SAY - "blatant display of SELLING UNAUTHORIZED COPIES OF DILLA'S SHIT"

In all honesty man, one of the main benefits of the internet is the free exchange of ideas and thoughts. People get turned on to new stuff they would have NEVER heard.

It would be impossible to figure out how many fans Dilla has gained by cats hearing ANY of his stuff online.

Radio had no love for him.

He never had any huge commercial hits.

The internet has done a lot for Dilla - whether you, him or his family ever realized it or not.

Once again, you must consider the duality of the RIAA.

They have managed to fool people like you and houseshoes into thinking that, because I GAVE (not SOLD) a compact disc of music to a cat I've never met on the other side of the world, I'm gonna cause the crash of the global economy somehow.

Oh yeah - I never saw that cat in person either. He handed me the CD by way of a digital format.

PLEASE REMEMBER - it was this SAME INDUSTRY that talked shit to fans back in the 70's about tape trading. CASSETTE TAPE TRADING ART. I'm not bullshitting you. Do the research if you don't already know.

MOW - all of THIS is going on while they raise the prices of music purchasing to unnecessary levels while LOWERING what they pay the artists who actually CREATE the music they're selling!

Doesn't that blow your mind just a little bit?

Now mind you, I didn't bring all of that up to justify NOT buying CDs - I currently own just over 1,000 of them myself - 90% of them are STORE-BOUGHT - and if ai like something that I download, I then scour the internet and every store I know or find out about to buy an actual physical copy of said music.

Am I still "violating" now?

I would urge you to re-think your position on file-sharing and what it means to those who MENTALLY benefitted from it.

>I'm with your Treble... playing dilla's music to a person who
>has never heard it is the BEST way to breathe life into his
>legacy... it's the manner in which people do it is my only
>issue.

But why should you care when you're not even sure if Dilla himself would care? You can't speak for him - he's dead and gone.

In all reality, his moms can say she may not like it, but have you OR shoes done ANY research to see the impact Dilla's music has had on the people around here?

I don't think y'all have.

I'm born and raised right here in Detroit man - and one of the things that I have hated MOST about my city is the "exclusive club" nature of the underground - as if, because I don't know "person A" or "person B" that I don't deserve the right to hear, know about or share the dope shit.

The internet destroyed all of those walls, and in MY opinion, most of these cats who had to jock people they didn't like to be accepted into the "circle" are mad - why?

Because I didn't have to do ANY of that shit.

I logged on the internet, met some cool people, and got in one year what most underground cats got in 5 years.

You'd be mad too wouldn't you?

Some cat that you thought was a "herb" got what you got AND he got it faster than you did?

The cool kids just ain 't cool no mo - lol...

Lemme tell you a Dilla story.

Back in 2003, I started hearing a buzz on these boards about some record Dilla did called "Ruff Draft".

By way of a file sharing program that most of us around here use, I downloaded it, checked it out, and was blown away!

However, I decided to wait to buy it because I heard it was vinyl only, and at that time, I had already bought the vinyl of a previous release (the J-88 release) he did for the same label two years prior when I REALLY wanted a CD of it in the first place.

Actually, shoes was working at Record Time at the time if I remember correctly - he was the one that put me up on that J-88 release and the remix Dilla did for Carl Craig's Innerzone Orchestra project, which I purchased the vinyl for.

I LOVE vinyl, but for shit that I listen to regularly, I prefer CDs. That's just me.

So anyways, when I heard Ruff Draft was vinyl only at the time, I waited until a CD was gonna be released so I didn't get got twice - cause when I sold to he J-88 vinyl to get the J-88 CD (which came out less than a year after the original vinyl release), I didn't even get my full value back.

One year later, I seem to notice that there hadn't been ANY noise about this wonderful piece of work ANYWHERE but on the net - and no CD release was coming, so I did what any fan would - started looking for a tangible copy in ANY form.

I found a cat selling the vinyl of it on eBay for 10 bucks (sealed) and I bought it.

Am I violating because I downloaded the mp3s and waited that long to buy the real shit due to a personal preference? The RIAA wants you to believe I committed a crime. But I didn't.

Nah, your not violating because you had every intention of buying the music when it's release came. True fans do this... causual tourists don't. I've got Ruff Draft on vinyl... and I feel you... I have to have the vinyl cause I love it, but I also need it on cd so I can ride to it. I don't have Ruff Draft on CD & would LOOOOOVE to have it... and as I just learned a lil while ago, Stones Throw is going to re-release it on vinyl & cd... so I don't have long to wait.

This is gonna start a whole new shitstorm yo!

Sometimes, I HATE PBW's secretive ass - I KNEW he had a reason for putting "Nothing Like This" on Chrome Children...LOL...

The question is, will this release be of the dirtier analog-tape sounding mix that was mp3'd and traded, or of the cleaner mixes pressed for the vinyl? If you never heard the mp3s, holla at me...

I've never heard the mp3s... I have the vinyl. I would imagine they are using the original recordings that were made for the vinyl for the re-issue.

the mp3s that are out there now have extra analog tape noise and tape dropouts on them that aren't on the original mixes for the vinyl.

I believe Dilla did that shit on purpose...but now we'll never know...

I don't think he wanted those mixes to leak to the net, but I think he made those mixes for an eventual CD release...just a theory...

Improv... this is the point I'm tryin to make. I hope we all can agree that in the future... just keep the links, bit torrents, etc out of the forums.

I respect each & every one of you whom I've had discussions with in this post. Disrespect was never the intention, some sort of
understanding was.

and after reading the ENTIRE post...i think most the "culprits" of not ever buying the released stuff aren't involved in this thread...cause let's be honest, between bling47.com and rensoul and other outlets that ma dukes has put her stamp of approval on, most of this stuff HAS been released by now...but who's buying it?

the reason most of y'all are on high emotions is because of how much this man has touched y'all, knowing him or not... and how much you want to see the WORLD finally hear him and respect him...we lose sight that most of us here reading this aren't the problem....

i agree w/ prov too, but then again, he's always pretty level headed...

tell these "friends" that you slide a beat tape to to go out and buy vol. 1 ....fantastic vol. 2...donuts...welcome to detroit....j-88....jaylib....shining.....bling47instrumentals....phatkat shit....tribe love movement....common like water for chocolate...

i know YOU ALl own them...but damn...keep this shit going...take it on yourselves...don't just rhyme over a dilla beat at a show...hold that shit up and tell people they are STILL sleeping...we did it when he was alive...do it now in his honor....

jussayin'...

much love,
Kyle

you make a lot of good points, but here's the ones you're missing:

1.) this whole post was spawned from somebody I know sharing a link to a couple of the Dilla 05 beattapes - which of course is not something that's being sold...

2.) while shoes took it upon himself to come at people on a messageboard, the people who ARE ACTUALLY bootlegging Dilla's shit are still makin' money and shoes ain't said SHIT to them. There are t-shirts, and CDs that Madukes has not endorsed out there for sale right now...

Maybe you should help shoes catch these people...

Putting it on a torrent when groups of people could get it in one swoop isn't fresh. If you give it to one person, well *shrugs* nothing can be done about that. But if like a 54 people are getting it a day, that's money lost on a project that could generate papes.

I believe that's what the problem is.

Remember how everybody here straight dogged Kweli over his last leak? Now granted that was some fucked up shit and it was bold how everybody turn their backs on him instead of going after the cat who either leaked the shit or the OKP user that posted the link in the Lesson...

Now the fact that it's Dilla the game done changed. What I wanna know is what makes Kweli so different from Dilla except the fact that one is a talented producer, the other a talented emcee. (and the fact that one artist is dead and the other is alive)

i realized what this post came from...but how do you know who shoes has and has not contacted regarding unreleased dilla music and merch?

he's doing his best to respect ma dukes wishes and to uphold dillas legacy by policing bootleggers and folks not down for the cause... but at the same time, he's not the big eye in the sky...things are going to get missed...all the more people helping is HUGE...so with that, this post does serve its purpose and hopefully more awareness on the issue..

the day i see ma dukes and dilla's kids living as large as let's say...(insert any awful rapper that is selling platinum) ...without medical bills...then we can take a break...

til then, you can't hate on the emotions this mans memory evokes...

Digital bootlegging can only be battled one way. For every song someone bootlegs you had better have a way to purchase that song digitally. On iTunes, Rhapsody, eMusic, etc. Otherwise people are going to not think twice about bootlegging on a P2P program a song or album they can't find locally in stores. As far as combatting illegal digital bootlegging, it's really as simple as that. I rarely purchase CD's online. It's just the idea of waiting a week for the music to show up in the mail that gets me. I'd rather download the album and burn it myself. I'm a music fan. I just wanna' cop the shit. It's up to the artist to get their music out their to be purchased. If I can't find your album for purchase, don't complain if I happen to bootleg it while waiting for you to properly market your shit to me so I can rightfully buy it. I know this is a new ideology toward the process of making music and buying it, but welcome to the digital age of the music industry. If you sleep on properly distributing your shit, you will get slept on by my wallet. Don't get me wrong, I mean I want to buy your shit. Unless your shit is diamonds in the rough like a debut album by Mike Ladd that is out of print now, I'm not going to put my all into digging for your music for years and years when I can just download it from a P2P. No offense, even after I download it and burn it to CD, I'm still going to be waiting to find it for sale so I can get the full CD quality tracks, but I'm not going to lose sleep or not listen to good music just because you are failing to get your shit out there. Not that this has anything to do with J Dilla at all. I'm just speaking in general about all the bootlegging talk. I don't have any Dilla beat tapes. Never heard one. Too bad their not being distributed properly right now. I'd buy them from Ma Dukes herself if I could. If he literally has thousands of beats unreleased, release them. The longer you wait the more cats who are begging for the shit will seek alternative means to getting a hold of that classic material that nobody's heard yet from the man, the myth, the legend. And to the cats like the one above me in another post who says why pay for anything you could get for free, in no way do I mean to justify such ignorance. Whatever you do for a living, why would anyone pay you when you can do it for free? Grow the fuck up. Buy the music. If I can't buy it, I'll be waiting to buy it when you get off your ass and give it proper release - as selfish a music fan as that makes me. Being the asshole in the situation does help promote artists who do it for the love of the music, not selfish ass music fans like me who want it and want it now. My apologies.
