the chord progression is a little predictable/kool aid for dinner, but, it definitely compliments the vocal line solidly. the drums are slummed some'm lovely, and bounce off the back of the standup quite well. wish a big set of sub stabs would roll in at some point, would really fatten the jawn up some'm marvelous.

good job. deuces.

but i can respect the movement.

cleveland - the drum roll that opens the track up is pretty fly, but beyond that this sort of annoys me. the sounds are so...i dunno, brittle. the hihats are so upfront in the mix, it's difficult to wrap my ears around it properly. needs an mc to really make sense, to me at least. it's definitely good and clean though, props due.

pop and drop - this i like a bit better. the melody line is interesting, and the progression of the additional elements really makes it move. the sounds involved still sound wild latex, but, they're working with each other properly.

smile - ergh. again with the hihats. some'm about the skittering makes me think of crickets fucking inside of a glass eye. can't really get with this, the guitar stab isn't in tune with the rest of the business. props on the moxie it took to do so little to so much, i guess.

gettin cars wet - hm. this is probably the best of this batch. it's a bit more electric than the rest, sounds like it has some real...nerves in it, not a reasonable facsimile of feeling, y'know? very easy to rhyme to as well, had me freestyling a bit nearly immediately. props due, this is solid money.

the only 2 that are done are pop and drop and gettin cars wet.
the rest need more time and energy. i.rarely.post.finished.beats.
for one its a pain in the ass to record them from the fantom's then to mp3. for 2 when you have clients that wanna hear your music i rather showcase from the lab on the studio monitors. thats how i feel about myspace, myspace is a joke.
ill be back next week and hope fully they will be finished.

i still havent got to play what i wanted to over it,
itll be all nice and full sounding,i hate beats that sound tiny. this is probably the earlyest of stages but i got the main pattern down and the chops..man the chops were time consuming.

Get Live - me singing and rapping. if i was a better singer this would sound better, but i think as a song it works pretty well. if cee-lo or the kid from people in planes got a hold of this, it might be something special.

Sugar Honey Iced Me - easy listening knockburst.

Anybody, Anywhere - boombrap, crudely chopped.

Improvement - see above.

lemme know whatchall think. thanks in advance. have a great weekend.

these tracks are dope man...some of the best i heard in a long time. Get live is jus a good song, vocals work in a maroon 5 kinda way (thats intended as a compliment). the vocals could stand to be thickened up a lil and its a little pitchy here and there...an auto-tune could prolly fix that up without altering your vocals too much. great job.

Get live – Chapeau bas man. Props.

Sugar Honey – for me it got boring and I think that had to do with the bass line. Be that as it may (since that’s just personal taste)…professionally done like all your work.

Anybody Anywhere – Super. Period.

Improvement - Beautiful. Beautiful details, mix.....good ‘ish.

It strikes me that in general your tracks are bass heavy....and yet the kicks are kind of low with not really much punch (maybe because you keep the frequencies of them on the low side as well) . But it sounds like this is a choice rather than something you’d like to change.

All respect,

Merlin.

Rant - Nice.

Who – Real nice. Snare could do with a little polishing, even if you’re out for the dramatic 9th wonder-results…..it’s a bit off in the mix (the frequencies). All in all: dope.

Triumphant – Dope bass line, synth is too cheap, overall a bit crowded (crowded sample), why is the bass line sometimes panned to the right only? Interesting break.

Settle down – I would love this track with an other snare (one more in line with the ‘soft snares’ of Dilla’s 'Donuts' for example). The whole track breaths that ‘soft but hard-style’ and the snare doesn’t fit somehow. Be that as it may….beautiful track.

still tryin'a get the hang of this mixing bizz... i think im movin along tho...

if you mean the organ sound then you'd be correct... its from my cheap lil casio that im usin at the current... the strings are too but i think i did a better job at filtering them than i did with the organ...

thanks... like i said its an oldie but goodie... i did a retake of the whole jammy, didn't really touch the beat tho... maybe i'll take that into consideration...

edit: to answer the panning question... i guess to make room for the main bass riff i made... as for the crowded thing, yeah i can see that... but hey, its done in my eyes... imma tinker with the organ sound tho...

And change those drums, the sounds are fine, but it sounds stuttery, I think they need to be more rythmic, maybe have your current main pattern every couple of bars or on the chorus or something.

I'd also add something else to it, seems a little thin. Maybe some strings and/or horns.

this was me just messing around with Pearl Jam's, "Man of the Hour." It's just drums and the sample, no bassline.

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=A5DAA0BD5430D4A5

this is a Red Hot Chili Peppers sample from their new album. I loved the bassline. Not too happy with the drums that I did but it came out pretty nice. Just experimenting and practicing with different techniques.

I really like the music there. Something about the rimshot bugs me though. Did you put a delay on it? Or is it a (unintentional) double hit? Could be a Midi problem... Except for that I think the music is dope.

...but I couldn't hear any flams on the rimshot. No delay was used. I do use double and triple hits, but they are totally intentional and obvious. The hits are a little off, because I wanted them sound slightly behind the beat and I didn't quantize, so that might be what is tugging at your ear.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!

I don't want to harp on this, but that's not what I meant. The drum programming is fine with me (yeah maybe one or two rimshots less, but that's a matter of taste).

What I meant was that to me the rimshot sounds a little distorted. It sounds like you got two audio tracks (or one audio and one midi track) with the same material running at the same time and they somehow distort or are slightly delayed. You can hear it best on the triple rimshot hits (klack klack klack). It's not a clear "klack", it's a tad bit distorted.

Have you listened to the track on myspace? Maybe that's where this slight distortion is coming from...

If noone else hears this, it might as well be my ears fucking up LOL.

Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it.

You know, after you've spent spent so much time on your music, there comes a point when it gets difficult to judge objectively. Either you become too critical or you fall in love with wack shit. So it's nice to hear positive feedback, cause I almost couldn't tell anymore...

Sorry, haven’t been around lately to give feedback…personal shit.
It’s been so long this whole “make the music”- forum is still kind of new to me.

Be that as it may, my site http://www.soulretriever.com
has been updated recently.

Added to the play list:

"Between Worlds" - Remix for Fatima Yamaha (release date t.b.a.)
"Perpetual"
"Tense"
"Changes" (on the second page of the audio fruits, yes I know ya’ll know the sample).

Also, I've added "Roller Coaster" played by Michiel Borstlap (winner of the Thelonious Monk Award 1996) in the downloads-section as well as the quite old original demo-version of the track.

Peace, Merlin.

Got that 80's feel I like. You kinda overchopped in places tho, where keeping it simple woulda been better.

The Reilla one would be cool with a little more low end.

The other one...not feelin' so much.

i thought the Reilla track was the best, i like it a lot

maybe it could use more bass, also the beat was so good that it hurt a little to stop it so much

Watch me, which I believe uses a Snoop Dogg sample, doesn't have anything glaringly wrong with it. It just seems to lack a sense of direction or melody to me, hence the vague comment.

The kick is a little too high, the snare is a little too low, and there's really not much in the way of a bassline. If you want to use that brass thing as a bassline, I might try laying another layer an octave below whats already there. The string/flute chops are cool tho.
