"So something's been bugging me about The Fresh Prince intro"

In the theme song, why did Will Smith spend so much time describing the cab? I mean it didn't really help to set-up the show, and it had zero relevance to the overall FP continuity. Yet he goes on about the cab for an entire verse.

In the Green Acres song they don't tell us how the Douglas's got out to the countryside. In the Beverly Hillbillies we are told that a truck is involved, but they don't waste time telling us what Jed's vanity plate read.

Yet in the opening credits of Fresh Prince of Bel Air, the majority of the song is in fact about a cab ride. I used to think of this as a good TV theme song, but I'm considering re-evaluating my Top 10 list now.

Was the cab/cabbie originally intended to be a recurring character, but then execs pulled the idea after the intro was already shot?

(Sorry if this has been posted before)

Will does a verse about his flight from Philly to L.A. as well.

Oh, and the cab driver looks an awful like Benny Medina (later an entertainment agent who managed Jennifer Lopez & Brandy), the guy whose idea the show is based upon. I'm 95% certain it's him.

Apparently he was sent to live with his rich extended family as a teen, and thought the idea would make a cool TV show.

It's like the guy from Adventures in Babysitting with the "So Cool" license plate. It really wasn't all that cool, was it?

this is too much detail?

I whistled for a cab and when it came near the
Licensplate said "fresh" and had a dice in the mirror
If anything I could say that this cab was rare
But I thought now forget it, yo home to bel-air

I pulled up to a house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabby "yo, home smell you later"
Looked at my kingdom I was finally there
To settle my throne as the prince of bel-air

He mentions the license plate, dice in the mirror and that it was rare. That's 3 minor things about the cab. Then adds in when he arrived and the fact that he said goodbye in a comical manner. (Now if he said there were crumbs in between the seats and that the driver had a bald head that would be extra). IMO what he points out is pretty fitting.

Like a previous poster already said, in the original version Will describes his flight to Philly and mentions how in first class they were drinking orange juice outta champange glasses. I thought the overall point of the intro was simply to describe what lead to him going/how he got to BelAir period.

What are they gonna do? Have the plane land in the driveway of Uncle Phil's crib? lol They wanted to make the theme shorter so they cut the verse about Will flying in the plane and kept the verse about his cab ride. That doesn't make sense to you?

You act as if Will spends this overwhelming amount of time describing the cab when he doesn't. He mentions several things about the cab before he's dropped off. Him being dropped off by the cab is a great secue to open the show IMO.

the characters you see every show, with exception of will, are not mentioned.

"BUT IN EPISODE #1695 WE SAW THE GUY WHO HE PLAYED BALL WITH!!!!?!?!?!?!?!"

thats fucking retarded.

yes it described why he came to bel-air and showed you WHO HE WAS AND WHY HE DIDN'T BELONG THERE.

it was ABOUT HIM.

Sure, we get some internalization where he thinks that "this cab was rare", so I guess that tells us that the lead character is capable of perceiving the obvious.

But don't you think those seconds could have been used for something a little more relvant to the character/plot?

he doesn't have to talk about himself to tell you who he is.

are you in the most retarded, remedial class of storytelling?

listen to what he says and how he says it, that tells you about the character.

gotdamn, this isn't rocket science.

Tell me what you glean of Will Smith's character from this line. Besides that he has eyeballs and is looking at a cab with them.

If you read my above examples of other theme songs with similar premised shows, you will see the weaknesses more clearly. I think it's a waste of time and lyrics. And a little something they teach you in the most remedial storytelling class: "Show, don't tell (cab)"

The show was called "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" not "Fresh Prince of Cab"... why wasn't he looking OUTSIDE the cab and noting the contrasts of Bel-Air/West Philadelphia? Or how about focusing inward on his own internal conflicts with the situation at hand? Why the cab? Why are you afraid to ask the questions that really matter here?

I think if you read between the lines it's obvious that the show originally had MUCH bigger plans for this cab (Maybe a talking cab like Knight Rider?) but something got changed at the last minute. In fact I'm sure of it.

if they had called it the fresh prince of cab

where would will have thrown the carlton dummy?
into the front seat?
he would have banged his head on the dice

and also
doesn't he say
"and it had dice 'IN' the mirror?"
i need to listen again
but if so
MAN
that's a hell of a cab
dice embedded in the mirror?

or maybe
andrew clay was supposed to be a character
maybe will's alter ego
since he was IN the mirror?

And I think the final clue is in this line:

"Yo Holmes, to Bel Air!"

Obviously invoking imagery of the great literary detective Sherlock Holmes.

Which would lead me to conclude that Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was originally intended to star Will Smith, Andrew Dice Clay, and a mystery-solving sentient taxi cab.

The cab ride sets up the fact that that the show is about how he thinks the show revolves about him.

The details in the cab are not in themselves significant, but that he sees them as somehow relating to himself. Never mind that every other cab has dice in the mirror. To him, it is affirmation of his entitlement.

He ain't ever even been to California but supposedly he is royalty, and everything he sees his warped mind sees as prophecy fulfilled.

when will is on the plane, he mentions siitting in first class, sipping orange juice out of a champagne glass. This suggests that the glass itself it connected to a higher status of life than other drinkingware.

Impressionable "inner city" youth saw this as a way to move up in status just by drinking from a champagne glass, thus promoting the sales of french bubbly wine.

as soon as the FCC picked up on this, they made them take out the second verse, making the theme song much shorter and will's cab ride much longer.

When stepping out of their natural element and into new experiences. There's always risk involved, and where the dice might fall is beyond our control. Hmm.

It would make sense too, that with Will's egomania he would fixate on the cab's mirror. Why did he notice the dice there in the first place? Because he was staring at himself in the mirror, of course. "Dice in the mirror" is a warning to us all then: Beware the dangers of narcissism.

Holy shit this is the best television theme song ever.

Maybe getting a cab in West Philly back then, for a Black man was like trying to get a cab to Brooklyn today while Black...

Maybe Will spends so much time describing the cab as if to say, "back in Philly, my ass could never get a cab, so let me describe the experience"

See, now that I really start analyzing things, it's becoming clear to me that Will never actually survived that bully encounter back on the playground ("Where I spent most of my days"<--- why else would he be speaking in past tense here?)

And that moment where his life got "flipped, turned upside down" actually refers to his death, and the cab ride, Bel Air, etc. are all just metaphors for his ascension to a higher spiritual plane. "Looked at my Kingdom I was finally there"... Kingdom/Heaven, God/Uncle Phil, etc.

(This might also explain why the cab smelled funny?)_

Its obvious that Will narrowly escaped a trip to Hell by the fat cabbie undertaker. Upon smelling the sulfurous fumes of Hell, Will quickly got out of the cab and said "Smell you later!", as in, "Im not ready for Hell yet, Im gonna check out Heaven for a bit, maybe Ill visit the Lake of Fire at a later date."

Maybe that whole bully story was fabricated to win over our sympathies?

The show often hinted at Will's criminal background, though I never imagined it to be so quite so heinous... But it adds up, doesn't it.

- Mentally disturbed youth with a lack of parental guidance ("On a playground is where I spent most of my days" ... this is a CRY FOR HELP, people)

- Constant references to delusional Arthurian power fantasies (which we've already uncovered in this post) make Will seem superior and disconnected from reality "Prince...Throne...Kingdom"... it all fits the profile

- Obvious disdan for cabs/cabbies ("Smell you later")

- Kid shoots a cab/cabbie, maybe SEVERAL of them, Mom calls on rich, influential family member to cover it up (Uncle Phil most certainly had the means to do so)

- Another added bonus: Not many cabs in Bel Air, reducing the likelihood that Will would do it again
