Seen it last night.

So far, THE BEST FILM OF 2008!

A fresh take on the vampire genre. It was something maybe Kubrick would have done with this kind of material if he was still with us.

Think the deliberately slow building pace and cold atmosphere of "The Shining", with the realistic vampire horror tone of "Near Dark", add in any sweet coming of age story, and all this with a foreign twist. Sounds odd, but it works wonders.

It was so good, I'm looking to cop the book today and I don't read novels much.

More on this film and others (The Wrestler, The Good The Bad The Weird, TimeCrimes, and Slumdog Millionaire) coming soon.

very well put. i'm not sure i want to see a sequel, and i really don't want to see the cliche american remake of a recent foreign film.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!

Don't read further if you have not seen this.

DrNO....

Why do you think the old man in the 1st half of the film was helping Eli get blood???
It was never really made clear. Was it her father? Some psycho pedophile that obviously would do anything for Eli? A serial killer? Maybe a stretch, but her childhood lover?...remember Eli is really older in age, but she was obviously turned into a vampire at the age of 12 and she never ages.

Also, what do you make of the scene where Oskar opened up the door when Eli was changing and we seen a quick flash of his/her private area. What the hell you think happened down there?

Also, the ending? Do you think Oskar is joining her on road to help her kill for blood? He was on the train doing their little secret language with the scratching, and there was a bag across from his seat...similar to the one the older killer used for his killing/blood draining tools. That is what I thought...she made it clear that she wants Oskar killing for her.

From the book source material, which I am still reading and from the director's interviews.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

Eli is really a 200 year old vampire, that is really a male that was castrated 100 years ago (which is why they showed the quick shot of the scared private area. Yes, it is a boy...also the reason why Eli is uncomfortable with the feelings Oskar has beyond just being a vampire..."I am not a girl". CREEPY

The man with Eli in the beginning of the film is described as Eli's father in the book (more like a father figure), but is also a pedophile. He is helping Eli because he loves Eli, I mean loves to have sex with Eli, he sleeps next to Eli every night in hopes Eli with let it happen. In the film, he even gets jealous of Eli's new relationship with Oskar..."don't go out with him tonight". CREEPIER

As for the ending...Oskar is obviously in love with Eli, feels accepted by him, feels safe with Eli, accepts his vampire lust for blood which further pushes Oskar's fascination of violence (newspaper clippings he saves of serial killers, his joyous facial expression as he is cut on the face by the bullies, etc.). At first he is apprehensive, but after he helps Eli kill the first time...he continues on. Eli even states late in the film in so many words...that she wants him to kill for her. Obviously at the end, they take the show on the road and leave in open for a possible sequel.

Wow. And I thought maybe "Eli" was an acceptable Sweedish name for a girl.

Ok that also explains the suicide as well

Yeah I really wanna see a sequel. I still dont remember the part where Eli makes it clear that she wants Oskar to help her kill tho. I'll probably end up seeing it again now that you've shed some more light on it. Thanks.

I thought the old man was what oskar will be one day. i thought the old man had been with eli since he was 12 & just got old. thats why he was jealous 'dont see that boy tonight'. he got old & sloppy w/his killings, ability to provide blood for eli & she kept it moving w/oskar. she/he is a vampire after all.

fun flick!

Loved the concept, but after it was over I left the theater wishing it was fleshed out a little bit more.

The one thing I loved is that for some reason I've always been fascinated by the whole idea behind vampires having to be invited in. But I dont think I've ever seen a flick where you get to see the consequences if they're not. That scene & the one that follows was 1 of the better scenes in the movie.

Overall it wasn't very scary but there were enough chilling moments like the one previously mentioned to keep me satisfied. It wasn't too gorey either which might turn some of yall off but I can appreciate. The sound effects were top notch & left more than enough to the imagination.

And I know the sequel idea is very unpopular around here as well but I think there's plenty more that can be discovered if this journey was to continue in another flick.

You should mos definitely seek the book...it has way more details, which most source material has.

It does have a slower pace than the film...believe it or not.

I think the adaption and the director's decisions with the film are right on. He wastes no time and gets into the meat of the story. The things that are hinted at make it creepier, instead of just flat out exposing it all like in the book. Some things are best not seen or fleshed out...it translates better to film, especially a horror film.

I think many will share your opinion of having some things left unsaid. I think it makes it scarier.

Yeah you helped explained enough to help me undestand it a lot better. But even still the whole relationship with Oskars parents was kinda weird, as was the guy who girl gets bit at the top of the stairs.

I got you...

MORE SPOILERS!

Oskar's parents are split up because the father turns out to be gay and an alcoholic because of it. Also, it is hinted that the father's new mate/boyfriend is also a pedophile...a few pedophiles in the book. Check out the looks the father's boyfriend was giving Oskar when he came in the door in the film...he was looking at him like fresh meat or something.

No beef really...the mom is just concerned about Oskar's behavior and is trying the best she could to hold it down. She is obviously the disciplinary in the family. The father did not even care when he got in trouble in school...the mother wanted him to curse Oskar's ass out or something. We all know who the real man of the house is...lol.

Have fun reading the book.

Lots of beautify restraint with the cinemetography, but they knew when to blow a load. The underwater sequence was beautiful.

Like seandammit said above, the revelations they only hinted in the movie seemed to be quite sinister. Now reading it third hand, makes me wish they would have hinted a little more/delved more into the backstory as opposed to I guess were nods to people who read the novel. But then again, having to go into all that exposition would have thrown off the pace of the movie

I also picked up on the creepy boyfriend looking at him like a meal.

The castration hint disturbed me, but it was such a quick shot that I thought it was just a sewn up vagina, lol. Then again, I guess It was me being dense considering he said 'I am not a girl' in the beginning.

And the father figure I got jealousy and love, but not creepy pedo love.

I was a little disappointed about how much was left out from the book. Loved the movie though. They nailed the relationship between Oskar & Eli.

didn't care that Eli wasn't really a girl. Remember he asked Eli to be his girlfriend and he tells him he's not a girl. and Oskar is like "so" and they became a couple.
or is that just me.

Good movie, but WOW @ the other info in this post. I did not pick up on that.

I thought when she said she wasn't a girl she just meant because she's a vampire. But DAMN.

The American version is called "Let Me In" because the publishers requested that Lindqvist change the title because they believed it was too long.

beautifully shot..reminded me of the Shining in some aspects. also i've always wanted to see an interpretation of what would happen if a vampire entered someone's home uninvited. It was interesting that Eli did it instead of just telling Oskar what would happen. I wonder if he'd had the experience before, accidentally, and knew what would happen (thereby demonstrating a willingness to die for Oskar) or if he wasn't quite sure and was curious himself...

I have a soft spot for films that portray life affirming relationships between lonely people in a way that isn't cloying or disingenuous, and that's the part of the movie I truly enjoyed, vampires or not.

And like others have said, this post definitely shed some light on things. I picked up on the pedophilic undertones during Oskar's last visit with his father, but not with Eli's "father" -- like someone else wrote, I thought it may have been a guy she met when he was 12 and stuck with her, helping her kill, and assumed the cycle was beginning again with Oskar at the end. And yeah, I presumed when Eli said she's "not a girl" it meant she's a vampire, and I my eyes didn't linger long enough on the brief nude scene (I mean, the character is 12) to tell that there was anything fucked up about her genital area to hint that she was, in fact, a boy.

Not that that fact changes my feelings about the film. It's about two people who need someone to care about them finding each other, so it ultimately doesn't matter what their genders are.

it wasn't camp, gory but not excessive, &
just well done.

couldn't help but to think about how
eventually oskar will become the old
man & eli will prey on someone else
who'll be able to kill for her.

in the beginning she was yelling @ the
old man for botching the killing. this
ended up in her having to go out & kill
for herself which was too sloppy--probably
why they moved around so much.

he'd pretty much outlived his usefulness
eventually she would need someone else on
her team. oskar willing to be that somebody.

i'm guessing the old man met her when
he was 12 as well, & they started out
as lovers, while he eventually took on
a paternal role to justify their
relationship.

Not nearly as nut-bustingly great as some here are making it out to be, but still pretty good

I picked up on Eli's true identity the moment "she" said, "I'm not a girl"... and Oskar's acceptance of that is less about him possibly being gay (as has been hinted at) but more that he's simply a lonely kid that has no one else to latch onto... his moms doesn't seem to care, his pops is kickin' it with another dude (who himself may be a pedophile), and the kids at school treat him like shit...

Overall it felt like there was a creeping sense of dread that never really arrived... I was waiting for something really tragic to occur that never really materialized...

Nonetheless, the movie was gorgeously shot, all the kids gave nice, nuanced performances, and the blood and effects were restrained but effective... not a bad flick at all.

IMDB trivia said that in the book it was based on, Eli actually WAS a boy. Before he was turned into a vampire, that is. So when he told the boy that he wasn't a boy, he didn't just mean that he was a vampire, he meant that he wasn't a female, ever.

But the way the story played out, it was like sexuality wasn't even important in their relationship. Maybe because the boy was so young, and the vampire was, you know, a vampire. But I think it went further than that.

I think it reveals a little about the "rules" of vampirism. I first saw the need to be invited in on Buffy, when Angel was outside of her window.

This is definitely the kind of film that can be killed by overhyping.

Especially here on Okayplayer.

It is a simple, quiet, quirky little movie that after people start raving about how good it is the whole next batch of people to see it are like 'so what?!?'

I only have one suggestion:

Unless you just absolutely HATE reading subtitles, watch this movie now before the remake comes out.

Because as the last six or seven years have showed us, the American remake is always much, much, much worse.

Seriously.

Hate on this movie all you want.

But it will be like a lost Orson Welles masterpiece compared to the big fat dookie that's going to hit theaters in a year or two...

Cause dubbed audio is corny and the US audiences largely don't want to fuck with subtitles.

Oh and they have to also transform it from an arthouse film to a mainstream film...

The audio dub sounds like it was done by people that don't know how to read.

In the book, the guy survives the acid, is bitten by Eli in the hospital and turns into some fucked up, retarded looking vampire thing that runs amuck through the city.

Hearing the voices as their meant to be heard, and everything.

I really liked this film, the cinematography was fantastic. There were no wasted shots, I really liked that about it.

The more you find out about the movie the more you recognize that these voice are more than just voices, but clues to who each person really is.

The american dubbed version has Oskar's voice being done by a little girl. It's just horrible, watch it the way it was meant to be seen.

110. "Controversy over subtitles: new DVDs with "new" subs to be pressed"
In response to Reply # 0

Comparisons of the Theatrical subs to the DVD subs with screen captures (1st link provides just one example, but the 2nd gives numerous ones):

http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/15702

http://iconsoffright.com/news/2009/03/let_the_wrong_subtitles_in_to.html

In response to that, new DVDs with the theatrical subs will be released, but there will be no exchanges:

Let The Right subtitles back in. With a caveat.
by Scott Tobias March 25, 2009

After yesterday’s uproar over the dumbed-down subtitles used for the DVD release of instant cult classic Let The Right One In, Magnet Releasing, the DVD distribution arm of Magnolia Pictures, has responded quickly with its intention to restore the subtitles of the original theatrical release to all subsequent pressings. Here’s the statement:

“We've been made aware that there are several fans that don't like the version of the subtitles on the DVD/BR. We had an alternate translation that we went with. Obviously a lot of fans thought we should have stuck with the original theatrical version. We are listening to the fans feedback, and going forward we will be manufacturing the discs with the subtitles from the theatrical version.”

How will aficionados be able to tell the bad subtitled version from the new-and-improved subtitled version? On the rack, the “theatrical” subtitles will be called out in the tech specs box at the back/bottom of the package. It will read: SUBTITLES: ENGLISH (Theatrical), SPANISH.

But for those who have already purchased Let The Right One in, it’s not all good news: Magnet is not offering exchanges. In other words, those stuck with the crappy version will have to buy it twice.

it was weird, because some i saw and knew immediately other differences were small, and honestly didn't make that huge of a difference.

I agree it was overhyped here, but to me it was a really touching and nuanced film.

It's rare that you get to see a genre film treated so subtly and w/such sincerity.

It's one of those films I can only watch once i.e. Kids, Donnie Darko, Happiness...

Overall I can't wait what else is stored from the director and cinematographer. That was like an art house horror love story.
