"Kevin Love WILL BE A TOP 5 power forward in two years flat"
Tue Oct-05-10 01:38 PM by vee-lover

I watched that dude against the Lakers yesterday and I'm convinced he's on his way to becoming one of the best power forwards in the league.

-He can SHOOT FROM THE 3' better than any pf now with the exception of Dirk and his midrange gm is solid also

-He's already one of the best passing big men in the league. He's right there with Pau in that department NOW.

-He can play with his back to the basket

-He just has good instincts for the gm, too

-He has a bigger upside than any 4 right now

I think playing in the FIBA gms this past summer did wonders for his confidence.

Pau
Dirk
^^^these Euros are the best power forwards in the league right now
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Boozer
Bosh

^^^ either of these 2, who are probably the next best two, will lose their rankings to Love in a matter of time
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(and these are the rest of the best)
Brand
KMart
Duncan
Aldridge
JSmooth
Z. Randolph
David Lee
Garnett

It's pretty quiet around here most nights, but occasionally you'll encounter someone wishing well as well as the odd moving the goalposts hater.

But otherwise it's a nice little spot to be in. Just have fun, enjoy the ride and try not to run away when his team is mired in last place again.

I expect Minn. to win no more than 30-35 gms this season. They're a young team but they show potential. If Webster and the rookie play like they're expected to play for this team, they could improve a lot faster but this ain't abt Minnesota, this is abt the improvement of Love and him being a top power forward in a few years or less.

Oh yeah, he was averaging a double-double the last year (14ppg 11rpg) and he DIDN'T EVEN START EVERY GM LAST SEASON.

And as much as I don't like Bosh, they'll never be mentioned in the same breath.

Shit.......even Blatche could give him the business if his head was on right.

I could probably even think of more players with more time.

Favors

I think not being able to jump or move laterally with any sense of urgency will hinder him.

no problem whatsoever saying Amare is better than Love and belongs in the elite class of power forwards...

having said that, Love is ALREADY A BETTER REBOUNDER, PASSER, AND SHOOTER THAN AMARE HAS EVER BEEN. Stoudemire is a waaaay more explosive offensive player, though...but that's really the only area of the game where he's clearly better than Love now.

Gasol...

And as far as NOT being able to build a team around Love, THERE ARE NO POWER FORWARDS IN THE LEAGUE WHO YOU CAN BUILD A TEAM AROUND, INCLUDING PAU. Dirk is the closest there has been and most ppl think he failed at his chance to show he was a player you could build a team around.

And remember, this will Love's 1st year starting a full season. Like I said, he has a better upside than any PF with the exception of Blake maybe.

14 and 11 in less than 30 minutes a game @ age 21 is pretty impressive imo. he was also 6th in the L in rebound rate (1st among non-centers)

if there were a dispersal draft right today including every current nba player, and i'm picking a guy to be my PF for the next 10 yrs, i don't know that there's anyone i take ahead of kevin love.

one of your top 2 or 3 players you're not going to win a lot of games. He's a defensive liability, he can't guard anybody in the post 1 on 1 and doesn't protect the basket either. As we've seen with Dirk, its hard to hide a non-defending post player and Love is not going to give you the 25-30 points a night offensively to help offset his defensive shortcomings.

there isn't this huge chasm between "superstar" and "role player" w/ nothing in between.

there are guys whose positions fall all throughout that intermediate spectrum. i'd place love near the higher end.

>if he's one of your top 2 or 3 players you're not going to win a lot of games.

bullshit. OKC won 50 last yr. you add love to their current roster, he's easily their 2nd or 3rd best player and they'd definitely be a legit contender.

shit, he'd be in orlando's top 3 too.

you think those two teams would get WORSE by adding love? what's "a lot of games" mean to you?

Love-Krstic front line would be a dunkfest for the opposing team. Love would not make OKC significantly better, what that team needs is a dominant defensive big man and that's something Love is definitely not.

I already said he'd be a good fit a alongside Dwight because Dwight would cover Love's defensive shortcomings and Love could stretch the defense with his shooting range. That's the best role for a Love, as a complementary player to dominant big man, but its not like there are a ton of those around.

you add love to any of those teams, and

a) he's one of their best 3 players
b) they all win 50+

which contradicts what you said earlier.

"if (love) is one of your top 2 or 3 players you're not going to win a lot of games"

sure, they're already good teams. adding love would make them better, not worse.

shit, the 07-08 lakers were a 50 win team without gasol. they were on pace to win 52 before they traded for him, and were 25-11 (a 57-win clip) before bynum got hurt.

does that means pau can't be a top 3 player on a good team?

not sure what you've got against that kid, but he's a good egg. i don't know that they'll put enough good players around him to prove it in minny (i wouldn't trust that GM to put together a fucking jigsaw puzzle) but he could definitely be an important contributor on a winner.

>Name a team with 40 or less wins that adding Love would get them to 50.

singlehandedly?

i don't know that adding love alone would effect a double-digit uptick in any particular team's W/L, but considering that there are only a handful of guys in the entire league -- certainly less than 10 -- that you could say that about, it isn't really saying much.

http://dberri.wordpress.com/2010/06/05/minnesota-discovers-it-needs-more-than-love/

^^^i know you're a pretty serious hoop head, check out that article (and the methodology behind the entire site if you like, pretty fascinating stuff imo, can't remember whether you're one of these "ADVANCED ANALYTICS $UKK!1!! WATCH GAMES!!1!" doofuses or not but you might find it interesting)

as one of those other guys is Kevin Durant, Dwight Howard, Lebron, Wade or Kobe, in other words, FOH! lol

And no, I don't really get into that Hollingerish-supergeek stat bullshit. It can be a good indicator for some things but it usually needs to be taken with multiple grains of salt.

As far as the article you linked, this is all you need to know about Love: "he is a bit below average in shooting efficiency from the field, blocks, and turnovers". Sure it sounds awesome that he averages 18 rebounds per 48 except for the fact that if play him for 40+ minutes in an actual game your team is going to get DESTROYED inside because Love is such a poor defender. That's WHY he only plays about 26 minutes a game.

boozer: 20.5, 11.8, 3.3, 0.5 per 36min. 21.3 PER, .178 WS

very similar raw numbers, but duncan contributes more towards his team's success -- probably because he's still a solid post defender and shot blocker.

but this mf is shooting worse than Brandon Jennings. Like I said, if he's one of your top 2 players you're not going to win a whole lot of basketball games.

I don't know why people think Love has all-star caliber potential.

He's slow, lacks a go-to post move, and can't defend.

He's "scrappy" but not a starter on a playoff caliber team IMO.

In response to Reply # 0

I think me and maybe Bags were the only ones pushing that immediately and it's more true than it ever was.

Love could be a top 5 PF, he's got a lot working for him for sure. His passing and shooting should not be news to anyone. His release is getting quicker, that was the only thing holding him back from being an outside force earlier.

A big guy with great size, positioning, hands and hoops pedigree is good despite slow foot speed and white skin!?! Unthinkable!

You don't hear the "K Tub" nickname much around here lately!

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

the centerpiece of arguably the worst team in the entire league. I don't see how you can say Love over a Mayo is a slam dunk, currently Mayo is averaging more points and is hitting a higher percentage of his shots despite being a guard. Love puts op empty stats and is a defensive liability to his team.

Mayo brings his consistent 18 ppg for a team that should be in the playoffs (albeit as the 8 seed).

I think Mayo is better.

Shid, if he continues playing like this, he might make the all star team this season. He's averaging 18.1ppg 14.6rpg and HE'S NOT EVEN AVERAGING 30 minutes per game.

other player's skill sets.

In this case, I'm talking abt Love; Love would be a better fit than Bosh on this Heat team NOT because he's better necessarily but because this Heat team really needs rebounding more than anything, and (some) scoring, from the 4 position and Bosh gives you next to nothing with the former and not enough of the latter (specially in the post).

Bosh has shown no desire to want to mix it up on the inside. He's content with shooting just perimeter shots. Oh, and Love is actually a BETTER LONG RANGE/3-PT shooter than Bosh, too. Bosh has the better mid range game, though.

So yeah, I'd rather have Love on that Heat team than Bosh.

he is willing to play down there in the low blocks...Bosh act like he allergic to the low post or something. Oh and Bosh is averaging (only) a mere *6 REBOUNDS PER GAME*...considering this Heat team does not have any other rebounders, Bosh should at least be grabbing no less than 9 boards per. I guarantee you Love WOULDN'T be averaging 6 rpg if he were on that Heat team.

Oh and because the Heat are getting mauled on the offensive glass, which is probably Love's greatest strength, is another reason why I would rather have Love on this Heat team instead of Bosh.

mentioned are true for the most part but Love is only going to get better and better. He has a HUGE upside. And I have to admit, even though he's not the most mobile player, that is what I really admire abt that guy is that he lacks all the physical advantages of players at his position but he's out performing most 4's at the moment. He's the embodiment of an overachiever.

doing so before Friday's career high game. It's not like he came out of nowhere and did what he did. The game before the 31-31 he had 23pts and 24 rebounds and tonight he put up 22pts and 17rebs. He's leading the league in rebounding and WAS DOING SO PRIOR TO THE 31 REBOUNDING GAME. Delk scoring 50+ pts was what you would call an aberration because he wasn't even a 20 point scorer at the time when he scored those points. He just got hot as any NBA player is capable of when it comes to scoring...but there's a reason why NO ONE has done what Love did since Moses Malone which was damn near 30 yrs ago.

So you what you said is not accurate.

Oh so Love was given the task of guarding both Horford who's a *center* and Josh Smith? How about if Love got just a little help from his other frontcourt mate, Darko "The magnificent" Milicic, who had only 2 pts and 2 rebs, they could have off set the Hawk's frontcourt and possibly won the game, too.

Love did his job. So I don't know what's with you trying to spin this like he got outplayed or something. But keeping trying, though...it's kinda comical at this point the lengths you're continuously going through to prove yourself even more WRONG abt Love. lol

is the "big man" on the floor for Minnesota but his defense is worse than Dirk's, he doesn't even attempt to protect the basket or contest shots, all he's concerned with is getting in position for a rebound to pad his stats.

cusp to being an all star...and one of the premier power forwards in the league.

I made this post before the season began and no one was giving K-Love a 2nd thought...so at the time you, specifically, could get away with saying K-Love is a role player or he sucks or whatever but now that the regular season has begun, it's clear he's better than you thought he was. When a player is dropping nearly 19ppg 14rpg all you should be doing is giving it up and saying I was wrong, dude is much better than I thought he was, period.

In response to Reply # 138

is. In my book if you're not the star player leading the team to victory then you're a role player. But that can be dismissed as semantics, but I'm lol'ing @ you trying to act like you discovered Love out of nowhere and were on to him before anybody else.

Dude was on Slam magazine covers in high school, most people that follow basketball and have watched his career up to this point know what his strengths as well as his weaknesses are. He averaged 14&11 last year in 28mpg and has put up high "per minute" rebound numbers since he's been in the league so what he's doing now isn't really a surprise to anybody.

Also the REASON he plays limited minutes despite being on a shitty team is because of the FACT that he's a shitty defender and despite his rebounding prowess is a liability to his team defensively whenever his is on the floor. Its Basketball 101, if you can't defend in the paint your team is not going to win a lot of games. Its possible to "hide" a perimeter player that is weak defensively but its a lot harder to hide a weak post player defensively at least for an extended period of time.

Look at Dallas, other than that one year when Dirk went absolutely apeshit offensively on everybody in the playoffs before losing to Miami in the Finals, that team has never had a lot of success in the postseason despite having a gang of talent over the years primarily because they've had trouble defending the paint. That year in the Finals when Dirk struggled offensively and they couldn't keep Wade from driving to the basket you saw what happened. Love might be a worse defender than Dirk and isn't anywhere near the offensive player he is to make up for his defensive shortcomings.

So Love is what he is, a guy putting up stats on a shitty team. I stand on what I said originally, he a great rebounder and hustle guy but he's not somebody that you can build a team around and if he's your best player you're not going to win many games. He could win a rebounding title and may play in an All-Star game, so did Kevin Willis and he still never made anybody's top 5 anything.

wrong abt K-Love and KIM...

But instead you continue to come back with asinine comments like "Blake had his best game"...ok, and? Blake had his best game (26pts 17rebs 2assts) and K-Love didn't...but he still basically played Blake to a stand still (24pts 14rebs 4assts and hit 2-3 3-pointers)...so what you are you saying? And a lot of ppl are already saying Blake is a stud and is expected to be ROY...so that has to mean Love is on his way, too.

but looking at his numbers it's not a stretch at all to say he'll be a top 5 power foward two years from now.

his rebounding numbers are superb and that's the thing that will make him that top 5 guy.

he needs to up his shooting percentage though. he doesn't shoot well enough to take so many threes.

his numbers could be inflated across the board due to playing with such a bad team, but i don't think they are quite the fools gold some people here think it is.

observation abt Love after watching him in a preseason game vs LA Lakers and dude really impressed me although he only played for maybe a quarter.

And his progress has been a lot faster than anyone, including me, ever expected. I won't go as far as to put him in the elite class of power forwards just yet but in truth, he's playing better than just abt any power forward right now.

19.0ppg 15.0rpg<-- *any* power forward would love to have those numbers. What other power forward(s) besides Dirk is playing better than Love right now?

i'd say pau. 22, 12, 2 blocks...... at 55% shooting on a great team. you know he's not just stuffing box scores.

k love has freakish rebound numbers and that's really the only place he's leading any of the other top 4 spots. his shooting percentages are pretty bad- especially for his position. plus he plays too much from distance, and while dirk is a ranged shooter he's deadly from the entire floor and has an amazing shooting percentage for a guy who plays so much from the outside- 54%. oh and blake has been putting up some very impressive games himself, shooting over 50% as well.

so, don't get me wrong, k love is in that conversation in terms of who is playing the best overall right now, but those massive rebounding numbers are the biggest reason. offensively he still has a ways to go despite his nice ppg. the other three i mentioned have much more balanced games right now, and that field goal percentage+ his abysmal defense is kind of a killer right now.

not saying he won't get there-pau and dirk have each improved certain aspects of their game considerably.

kind of a trip to see most of the better four's in the game as white dudes though.

west NBA All Stars...writer says not only does K-Love deserve to make the team, HE DESERVES A STARTING SPOT.

The should-be Western Conference All-Star starters

By Kelly Dwyer

Thursday, the final balloting update for the 2011 NBA All-Star Game was announced, as paper balloting will stop after Jan. 17, and online punching-in will conclude after Jan. 23. You are staring down your last chance to secure the 10 starters for this year's midseason classic, and we feel it a public duty to help you get it right. You watch all these games, you better wield some sway, y'know?

So what follows are our picks for this year's ASG, as we're nearly a half-season into things.

Here lies the Western Conference.

CENTER

The fans' pick, thus far: Yao Ming(notes), Houston

The right pick, thus far: Nene, Denver

This is where things get iffy, and this is why you have to read, instead of just skimming the names.

Do I think Nene deserves to be the starting center for the Western Conference in the All-Star game next month? Hell no. Does he deserve to be an All-Star? Possibly. The guy helps defensively, he averages 15 points, 7.5 rebounds and a block in just 31 minutes of action, and he's one of the league's more underappreciated talents. But should this guy start? No way.

Because of the outmoded system the NBA uses to vote for players, Nene truly has been the best center in the West this year, and by its technical terms, he should start. Andrew Bynum(notes) and Yao Ming are better when they're healthy, Marc Gasol(notes) and Marcus Camby(notes) are better when they're used properly, but Nene has been the best center-by-the-NBA's-needless-definition so far in this conference.

The real starter should be Pau Gasol(notes), who is a power forward under the NBA's terms. Or even Dirk Nowitzki(notes) or, hell, give me the ancient Tim Duncan(notes) (listed, once again, as a power forward) holding it down back there. But because the NBA refuses to switch to the "two guards, one big, two forwards" voting, we get stuck with ballots like this.

FORWARDS

The fans' picks, thus far: Kevin Durant(notes), Oklahoma City, and Carmelo Anthony(notes), Denver

The right picks, thus far: Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas, and Kevin Love(notes), Minnesota

Dirk is teetering on the edge. Per game, he's played better than any forward in his conference, but he's also missed eight games with a sprained knee, and missing over 20 percent of your team's games shouldn't be sloughed off. So I'd have no problem with dumping Dirk in favor of Pau Gasol, Blake Griffin(notes), Duncan, or even Zach Randolph(notes). That's right now, though. In a few weeks, when he has a few more games under his belt? Start him.

And Love has to be in there. Not just on the team, but as a starter. This has been your best, most consistent, forward in the conference this year. He's averaging 21.5 points and 15.7 rebounds, which are ridiculous numbers, on top of a 45 percent shooting mark from long range. Dirk's never shot that high in a season from behind the arc. This guy dominates games just by keeping his terrible team in games.

And as much as I love and respect Blake Griffin's game, and anticipate that he might end up having a better season than Love overall by the time things wrap up this spring, I can't slough this sort of half-season off. I've watched too much of it, and the stats hold up. Love has been amazing, and he deserves the nod. Not just a spot on the bench, but to be introduced among the top five.

GUARDS

The fans' picks, thus far: Kobe Bryant(notes), Los Angeles, and Chris Paul(notes), New Orleans

The right picks, thus far: Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles, and Chris Paul, New Orleans

Tabbing Bryant to play alongside Paul isn't just a grab to put an off guard next to a point guard.

Despite some forced shots and sometimes-there defense, Bryant has put together a better all-around season than Steve Nash(notes), Deron Williams(notes), and Kevin Martin(notes).

Russell Westbrook(notes)? I'm not as sure. I think they're about even. So flip a coin.

Chris Paul's the best point guard in the NBA. He's in with permanent marker. I don't like the way he tends to think pass-first late in games, but I can't argue with the other 98 percent of the game, though.

and shooting 45% from the arc...man, I have no problem with him representing the west as the starter.

I said he'd be an all star in 2 yrs but now the way he's playing, I would have to say in 2 yrs it's reasonable to say he could be 1ST TEAM ALL NBA.

oth have freakish numbers but blake is doing his as a rook, is more refined, and above all else is intimidating and physical as fuck- which is ideally what you want in a power forward.

while my knee jerk reaction is still that love isn't on the same planet as blake, the season he's having is fucking amazing and you gotta give credit where it's due. you won't find a single gm who would take love over blake, and rightly so. to say that the two shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence, well, that's a bit of a stretch right today given that love has better numbers and the records are similar..

light yrs better than Love...which is what you're statement is implying. (The casual) Sports fans have a tendency to fawn more over style than substance which is why Blake's name is in the headlines more than Love, who has a un-pretty blue collar type of game that does not bode well for the ESPN highlight reel.

You look at their numbers and it's basically a wash...although Love is averaging 4 rebounds more than Blake which is pretty significant. Blake has freakish athleticism and will probably go on to be better than Love when it's all said and done....but right today, I think any team would jump at the chance to have either player.

numbers, in his case he puts up great rebounding numbers whereas Dirk was a pure scorer, but he's such a liability on the defensive end that it basically cancels out anything else he does. Is easier to hide a weak perimeter player on D, but when you have a weak defender at the 4-5 spot its detrimental to the entire team.

in the all star game if Blake is soooooo much better?

There is nothing abt Blake's game that is markedly better than Love's, period. When the two have faced each other, they basically canceled each other out. I do believe Blake has a brighter future ahead of him and because of his raw abilities, he has room for improvement but you still make it seem like Love is Mehmet Okur or some shit.

The numbers don't lie...and as far as the numbers are concerned, Love and Blake are basically putting up the same numbers.

(The casual) Sports fans have a tendency to fawn
>more over style than substance which is why Blake's name is in
>the headlines more than Love,

not really. his game is significantly more polished. he doesn't even look like a rookie out there. he has more passion than poise right now, however that physicality and ferocity has been vital to this current run all the court to way down to team meetings. his post game, i hate to say it, doesn't really need much work. my only real issue there is at times he's a little *too* much the bull and can get a little sloppy... but it's always effective even when it's ugly. but still- there isn't a whole lot he needs to develop with his back to the basket.

much of the time he's already made up his mind what he's going to do with the ball before he gets it. many time's he sees a cutter or the double already rotating toward him and the ball is out of his hands just as quickly as it arrived.

so, while the *casual* fan, as you said, is more inclined toward the dunks, a more serious fan see's remarkable maturity in his game. he doesn't play like a rookie at all, with perhaps the exception of having a bit of a temper at times, and even then it's not over the top and benefits the team because he comes across as truly intimidating, some fake ass thug spewing empty bravado.

>who has a un-pretty blue collar
>type of game that does not bode well for the ESPN highlight
>reel.

wouldn't call all those three's blue collar. in fact, blake is more workman like offensively. that's a semantic argument though and i understand where you're coming from. few big men make highlight reels on sheer shooting prowess (dirk, and uh....yeah.)

>You look at their numbers and it's basically a wash...although
>Love is averaging 4 rebounds more than Blake which is pretty
>significant.

yup. that's hard to discount and closes the gap.

Blake has freakish athleticism and will probably
>go on to be better than Love when it's all said and
>done....but right today, I think any team would jump at the
>chance to have either player.

well, that's being diplomatic about it, and i agree. all i'm saying is. there isn't anyone outside of that that schmuck in minny, methinks, that would rather have kevin over blake. not a bad consolation prize by any means, but lets keep it real: is there ANYONE at the four spot teams would rather have right now than blake? i'd trade pau in a heart beat to sew up that spot for the next ten years, without blinking.

Usually it takes young dominant post players a while to get that down, the fact that he already has the ability to recognize the double team and pass out of it as a rookie is special.

but he's going strong. I'm with you, if he starts in the All-Star game, I'm good with that. How can you argue against a guy having this type of season. I never got the "he's doing it on a bad team" argument. It would be a lot easier to play half-assed on a horrible team and no one would know the difference. I think it's more impressive that he's still playing this hard when his team has no chance of going anywhere.

I say COTDAYUM!!!

http://www.rauzulusstreet.com/basketball/nbarecords/nbayrrebounds.htm

1970 had a drop-off of (5) full rebounds while Chamberlain was upping his 'spinners' numbers, then back to business in 1971.

As for 20/15, that is a big stat if Love can keep it going, especially at forward. Shaq had 20/14 as a rookie, D.Howard had 20/14+ in 2007 but both are centers.
