Childress already said he would start the second preseason game, and they'd go from there for the final two games. So there's no reason to bring in Favre yet.

16. "His imagination started running wild again"
In response to Reply # 0

Two nights ago, as he lay on his TempurPedic mattress in his Mississippi home, silently caressing his ever-so-slowly aging championship ring, his visions returned. He rose from his aching body and floated through his roof, across the sky from star to star, and landed on the greenest football field on which he had ever laid his eyes.

He heard a faint noise in the distance...slowly building into a cohesive, echoing roar. "FAVRE! FAVRE! FAVRE!" "Everyone loves me," he thought to himself. Now a football is in his hand. Grunting Packers linemen are charging at him, seemingly from all directions. He spots an anonymous fast black guy in the distance, right sideline. Now everything is in slow motion. He cocks his arm back, and releases the ball, a trail of angel's dust trailing behind it. The ball disappears into the midnight sky...silence...the ball slowly descends, directly into the hands of his beneficiary. Deafening noise erupts once again. Fireworks explode. He runs forward, elated, and embraces the black man. Then to the sideline, where purple-clad teammates line up to hug him and thank him, one by one, for being their savior.

He was swiftly pulled from his vision, from the sky and back into his body. Then he got a hard-on and rolled over on his wife.

An egomaniac even by NFL professional standards.

Competent veteran QB, and it would have amplified the glory of Favre's failure in NY that much more.

NFC North Title and playoff berth while Favre crashed and burned at the end of the road, resulting in the Jets missing the playoffs and Mangini getting fired.

Dude has accomplished more in his career than Sage and TJack but his best days are far behind him now. This is not the same Favre that led the Pack to two SB and won some MVP awards.

If you just look at Favres stats from last season and take his name out of the equation would you want him back? Didn't he lead the league or second in picks thrown?

frerrotte pretty much drove the car on the vikings division championship last year. tjack may have parked the car, but frerrotte -- ugh -- is the reason we were in the position in the first place.

favre's stats last year are misleading because if you look at the weeks before the arm injury, he was doing just fine and the jets were 8-3. after the arm injury, he was a hot mess and the jets fell apart, mostly due to his play.

also, favre is only one season removed from leading the packers to the NFC Championship game. granted, he choked there, but that game should never have gone to OT anyways.

They're going all in this year. If they don't make the Super Bowl - Favre quits for good, Chilly is fired and they start 2010 needing a coach and a QB. They should just cut Tavaris now and let him go be a back-up somewhere else. They've ruined any chance that man had of being a successful QB for them.

he is not the QB he used to be he is completely done and washed up. He just can't look himself in the mirror and admit it.

Throwing to a bunch of HS kids in the summer is not minicamp. Just because your arm is strong enough to beat some HS corner or safety doesn't mean you still have it and can do the same in the NFL.

I hate the constant updates on ESPN, I hate whole "sports" and "NFL" shows devoted to this guy.

I hate that this guy gets so many passes based on things he accomplished over a decade ago but if a player like TO or Javon Walker (holdout, not go to training camp as he did while a teammate of Favre) did something like this the media would crucify him.

You think Favre would support a fellow player trying to do something like this if he were already in camp and practicing.

Favres megalomania is only eclipsed by Joseph Stalins.

who isn't even in your locker room yet, wouldn't disrupt team chemistry. He already comes in thinking he is the most important and least expendable player on the team.

You see how the Jets players shitted on Favre when he bounced. That resentment begins early on, and Favre doesn't step out of his diva zone enough to appease other players and make some of that resentment dissipate.

and for the price??? no they weren't doing anything this year otherwise, but why bother if they're not really going to anything with him. a rental won't help them.

and the price only affects this year, which obviously they're going all in on so who cares?

Once you get past the ridiculousness of Favre's act, the offense is better with him at the helm.

and even if so, they can't be THAT much better with him at the helm. they're not getting a trophy with him. so why make this move? if he's a rental who's going to leave your team right back at square one next year (possibly even worse, he left the jets with a bad taste in their mouths) then what's the point?

this move makes them the favorite in this division, which gets them to the playoffs, which leads to Favre throwing a game-losing pick in the Linc in January.

There's no one that matters on this team they're worried about offending and it makes them better for this year, that's really all there is to it.

He'll tell you he doesn't want to go ice fishing, then all of a sudden you want to to go ice fishing with him even though you didn't before, then he changes his mind and says he does want to go ice fishing, which in turn makes you not want to go ice fishing with him anymore. but guess what? You do it anyway, or at least someone else will.

Yes, right now.

Yes, he's overpaid. Yes, he's an asshole diva who will likely disrupt team chemistry. Yes, I hate him with all my heart. Yes, the media knob-slobbing will know no bounds. Yes, if it doesn't work, Childress is gone, the QB is gone, and the Vikes are in reboot mode.

But he is better than Tarvaris "Will Never Be More Than An Okay Backup" Jackson and Sage "My TD:INT Ratio Is 1:2 On A Good Day" Rosenfels. Favre's funballing will result in picks, of course... but he's still better than the two of them.

Sorry, Vikings fans. Sorry, Favre haters. You don't want to hear it. But they wanted an upgrade at QB, were willing to pay, and they got one.

It sickens me that I had to do that just then.

And I'm rooting for Rosenfels or Jackson to somehow grow talent and knock Favre out of the starting job. But I'm doubtful.

Last year, he had the support of a good running game, capable receivers, and a good offensive line, and still did shitty. Add to that, he's coming off whatever bicep injury on his throwing arm he has/had to deal with. He's a shot horse at this point.

a huge upgrade over Sage or Tjack, certainly not enough to "win it all" this year. Favre's ceiling is a NFC Divisional loss, at best.

If the Vikes really wanted to win it all this year, they should have given up the farm for Cutler, who atleast would have been in camp and off season workouts with the team, building team chemistry and timing with his WR.

Favre has had what, one good season in the last five and that ended with him throwing a game killing interception in OT.

What has Favre done this century to warrant the benefit of doubt that he recieves from ESPN and people on these boards?

His best years were in the mid to late 90's and he hasn't been able to win shit without Holmgren. Holmgren was the only on strong enough to check Favre and his ego, as soon as he left Favre returned to his old selfish and self destructive ways.

if they get to the playoffs, hell even IF THEY get homefield advantage and only need to play 2 games, he will choke in 1 of them

somehow, signing Brett Favre increases and decreases your super bowl dreams in one fell swoop... and you know that feeling from last year with the Jets... he is better then what we had and had won 1 b4 so we thought this guy could take us there, but in reality his moronic passes, refusal to admit when injured or aging AND selfish lust for throwing bombs that turn into punts cost us any shot of going anywhere last year... He will have a few moments for the vikes i'm sure like he did vs the pats and titans last year, and those 2 moments will probably both come vs the Packers but no way does this team win the super bowl with Brett Favre and when he walks next year they then do what?

i think his carelessness costs them. they have the best RB in the game and a solid D so they can maybe overcome so bad field position but I think that Sage could manage well enough to *not* screw things up badly.

And if not - they could have had Garcia, Pennington, Leftwich, or any other serviceable QB that's been available over the past two years. And they could have pulled off a trade for Cutler.

favre was playing really well the first 10-11 games last year and the jets were rolling, then he tore his bicep or something and was throwing lame duck passes all over the place after that & the jets tanked down the stretch as a result.

supposedly that injury has healed I think, but now he has a partially torn rotator cuff, on top of having more mileage on him than any QB in NFL history. I don't really see him staying healthy the whole season, in which case the vikes are worst off throwing tavaris or sage in midway through the season than they would be starting from jump.

basically it's a gamble on him staying healthy. could be a high upside for the vikes if he does, but my guess is they lose that gamble &
vikes fans end the season wanting to take farvaro out back to shoot him.

aside from just hating on Favre, who actually was a pretty good starting QB on a winning team until that rotator cuff injury last year?

At the very least, he still warrants a defense's respect even if it's misguided, which means no more 8/9 men in the box to stop AP.

So basically, you're wrong.

then there's no point in discussing it further.

Ain't a coordinator in the world who's ever designed a defensive scheme to really account for the passing game of Sage Rosenfels.

A coordinator would rather shut down the run and let that dude try to do it with his arm. There's a reason this guy hasn't started more than five games in a season on four different teams.

You won't see teams doing that to the Vikes this season as long as Favre is reasonably healthy.

He's got enough ability and track record to still make them think they need to do that.

>aka Favre.
>
>it's not like Sage is an unknown or hasn't shown that he's a
>legitimate NFL QB.
>
how has he? because he looked alright stepping in for Matt Schaub before he tried to run through an entire defense holding the ball like a loaf of bread?

The dude had two turnovers for every TD last year and the sad thing is that was a decent season for him.

>great? no. franchise? no.
>
An eight year vet who's never been a team's planned starter versus a Hall of Famer who still has some semblance of game left who will help AP not see eight-men-in-a-box every down?

Tough call.

I expected this to happen once the regular season started if the Vikings had a bad start. I didn't expect the team to panic after a bad pre-season game.

I guess I can't knock Favre's hustle. He got to sit out pre-season and fleeced these guys som'n terrible. But if the Vikings are stupid enough to throw him all that dough and fuck up the chemistry, that's on them.

I hope Green Bay rolls his pill-popping ass.

"I'm sure I'll regret my decision down the road.''
--Brett Favre, to me, on July 28.

Down the road? That's a pretty short road. More like a driveway.

---

"I'm leaving an incredible opportunity on the table, and that opportunity is not coming back.''
--Favre, July 28.

Yes it is.

---

You would think I think this Brett Favre-to-Minnesota story is great, but I don't. I think it's wrong. I think it's a circus. And I think Minnesota coach Brad Childress is making a mistake.

If I were Childress, I'd have waited until Sage Rosenfels struggled -- if he struggled -- and then made the call to Favre. By doing it now, Childress loses Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson; how can they ever trust anything he says now? I'm sure both are furious, and Rosenfels, particularly, is crushed. And the way Favre talked to me three weeks ago, there's a chance he won't last the season and Childress will have to turn to one of his angry quarterbacks.

What Favre told me late last month he wasn't coming back because he felt totally beat after some hard summer workouts, how could he think he'd have enough stamina to make it through a season? He simply didn't think he'd be able to handle the physical rigors of the season. "I just didn't think my body would hold up the way it had in the past,'' he said.

The perfect scenario would have been for the Vikings to see if Rosenfels or Jackson played well enough through a piece-of-cake early schedule (at Cleveland, at Detroit, San Francisco), and if the position was an Achilles heel, then reach out to Favre to see if he was interested. By doing it now, Childress tells his team he doesn't trust Rosenfels or Jackson. That could come back to haunt him if Favre's body breaks down.

Childress has looked like a desperate man throughout this melodrama. He made it known internally that Favre had to do at least some work in the offseason program or the veteran mini-camp to be considered. Favre never showed. Then he had to come by the start of camp. Favre didn't come, opting for his third false retirement in 17 months. Now the Vikings let him come back after the team has gone through training camp. Favre's the wishy-washiest player in memory -- and the Vikings are his enablers. It's ridiculous.

there are too many underlying issues for the above statement to not be true

he's supposed to adapt to his teammates, especially his receivers, in three weeks? lol

dude is going to be out there chucking. at least Rosenfels would (should) be a more effective chucker. he knows the offense and *should* already be on the same page with his receivers.

this shit is going to be a mess and Im going to love every minute of it.

People are so caught up in Favres legacy and past accomplishments that they think he will be an instant upgrage.

Are Sage and TJack great QB's? No but if both Eli Manning, Brad Johnson, and Trent Dilfer road strong defense and a running game to win SB titles, so can Sage and TJack.

Favre not so much because his gunslinging mentality/center of attention attitude won't let him sit back and ride a defense and run game to a SB. He will try to force plays and be the hero and ultimately fail and quite, only to come back on another team.

the bottom line is opposing d-coordinators have a different element to prepare for and can't stack the line with a real QB there.

time he was in their division with a team not as good as this Viking team currently is.

When will y'all stop making weak fish-in-a-barrel arguments so I can stop defending this Favre pickup in here?

I'm making myself sick but y'all just need to leave it at pure hate rather than actual X-and-O shit......because the bottom line is the Vikings improved their team today from a pure football perspective.

They went from a back-up and a never-will-be to a Hall of Famer who might have a little something more left than what you saw in the last four or five weeks of last season and they gave up no players or put any dent in their cap beyond this season to do so.

i'm not big on 'take away one game and then analyze the stats', so i'll skip the obvious aberration in his season. dude had some VERY fortunate bounces in those early games, pitching a t-jack funball to stuckey in game 1, etc.

favre is probably not getting better with age, his last year was not as solid as you seem to recall, he's recovering from injury, and the coach is in a suicidal situation where favre has to play...

the ONLY way it works out is if Favre can go back to '07- minus the long-term system NUANCE familiarity, minus the familiar environment, minus the phenomenal wide-receivers, minus the good health, and minus the greenlight for Funball. plus the circus.

vikes front office are morons- coach too...

He had some fortunate bounces early while still learning the Jet offense, some unfortunate ones late when he lost his velocity.

I unfortunately watched the Jets play a few times too last season. I remember people being on the dude's dick after they destroyed Tennessee in late November, so it ain't like his best days are ancient history.

of course he has to play, like this dude would come out of retirement to back up Sage Rosenfels.

he's got familiarity with both the coach and the system. If the surgery was successful (and we don't really get indications that it wasn't) then he should be able to adjust fairly quickly while being asked to do less than he was in Green Bay his last year or last year with the Jets.

'minus the phenomenal wide-receivers'? Are the Vikings options there really that much worse than the Packers were going into '07? Driver's old and no one really knew Jennings yet at that time.

Berrian's a solid deep threat, Wade is serviceable, and you can start implementing a guy like Harvin into the passing game as well.

>vikes front office are morons- coach too...

there's really not much risk to this move, because they're coming from the perspective of this position being perhaps their biggest weakness on an otherwise pretty good team and not giving up anything to take a flyer on a Hall of Famer who at least has a chance of recapturing a bit of his 2007 form. Those other two guys are what they are, a career backup and a never-will-be.

Driver had 1000+ receiving and Jennings had like 12tds in '07

my basic point: even if Favre plays poorly (a 50-50 proposition), he's going to be the QB this year for more than half of the games (assuming health). they can still win games with the run & defense, but i'll be damned if they couldn't do that with the guys they already have...

i refuse to believe that the Ghost of Brett Favre Past will cast a fearsome shadow over the Norris for a full season, let alone playoffs. if anything, cats are gonna line up to drill this bama like they did Jordan on his last go at it.

IMO they slobbered over the wrong old-ass qb (if you take 'em at their word that they were in the market for a caretaking game manager); Jeff Garcia must've stabbed one of Chilly's kids back in philly.

The QB actually listening to his coach and playing within the scheme of the offense had a little something to do with that. Stands to reason he might be able to do something resembling that to some degree if he's fully recovered from that surgery.

It's certainly not a lock but a coin-flip chance of 2007 Favre is better than a guaranteed deficiency.

he threw LONG a lot and Jennings was unbelievable in saving his ass many times. he's still got a tear in his shoulder and i dobut Berrian's gonna become close to what Jennings was for him. Plus Driver wasn't old in '07 and had played with Favre for years.

i'm not saying favre isn't an upgrade (cmon, sage? tjack? only on okaysports), but he isn't the type to suddenly turn unreckless and he won't like getting to throw less than a lot and the jets players turned against him after being super excited to have him.

all signs point towards another great start and shitty end.

No one knew who Jennings was going into the year was the point. Stands to reason Sid Rice or someone else could step into that role this season if Favre is healthy and regains some of that form.

Favre's play, for better or worse, was the most crucial element of the passing game in his tenure with the Pack.

After Sterling got hurt, there isn't anyone he ever threw to in 10+ years that you'd consider great.

In terms of the system and situation, Minnesota is a lot closer to the one he was in with Green Bay in 2007 (with a better defense and running back, maybe slightly worse receivers).

Greg Jennings in his first two years was not even remotely approaching 'great' status.

And if you take it on a per game level, Jennings was better in year two under Favre than with Rodgers last year in year three.

No one outside of GB (my friend's a big packers fan and was obsessed with how good Jennings was going to be--i can admit that's weak evidence). Rice's two season's don't add up to Jenning's first season. that could be injury, but in hindsight, we know Jennings is a stud. I'd place my bet that Rice isn't.

yes, but it was also a reckless 'slinging game. The type Minny does not need at all.

Driver's been pretty f*cking steady though. A lot of teams would have loved to have him. one of the most underrated WRs in the game for a number of years, imo.

maybe slightly worse. Driver was definitely better than Berrian, and Jennings was definitely better than Rice. but they do have a better D and RB, I just don't know if Favre is willing to be the third component of a team instead of the star.

Rice was slightly more regarded coming out of college than Jennings, Rice's first two years in the league these were his starting QBs: About half-Gus Frerotte/half-Tavaris (mostly TarVar as a first-year starter) with a few scattered starts additionally between Brooks Bollinger and Kelly Holcomb.

I don't think I need to add much to say it's possible that we might not have really seen what he's fully capable of yet.

In 2007 he had a 2:1 TD-to-interception ratio in the same system with a much lesser running back because McCarthy scaled back his attempts and responsibilities. I'd expect Chilldress to attempt something similar.

They don't need him to throw 40 times a game. If they make a concerted effort to keep it in the 25/30 range and he's healthy, they could be a problem in the NFC.

2007 Driver being better than 2008 Berrian is debateable. Driver was better in terms of being a possession receiver but Berrian was much more explosive (20+ yards per catch to 12) and much better at getting into the end zone. And that's without factoring in the respective talent level at QB.

All I'm saying is let's not be intellectually dishonest enough to frame this as Favre's last year in Green Bay was made by his receivers.

Neither situation is 'Holt/Bruce/Proehl/Az-Hakim' or 'Carter/Reed/Moss'. Neither situation is 'Torrance Small/Charles Johnson' or 'James Thrash/Todd Pinkston'.

Based on what? Sage had twice as many turnovers as TDs last year, never started more than five games in a season and has never gone into a season as a starter heading into his now ninth year in the league and fifth team.

I'll roll with Favre in a system he spent 16 years in over Jeff Garcia playing on his fifth team in six years when he couldn't get over the 50 versus the Raiders with a chance to go to the playoffs on the line.

And 'rolling the dice' on Favre as a free-agent for a season doesn't mortgage your future with multiple first-rounders like a Cutler trade would have.

Vikes at Chicago and Green Bay were already notable games- adding Favre certainly pumps up AT LEAST the atmosphere for those games, just like he did in the AFC during '08; 'cept this time its against players he was either torching for YEARS or a staff that knows him pretty well.

Cutler is too much of a gamble in terms of cost, and Sage is too much of a gamble in terms of talent, so the solution is Favre for one year coming off injury and skipping training camp? i guess it truly boils down to me being skeptical of his ability to hold up, thus reducing his talent level advantage. and i do think it's going to take at least a month for him to get in sync with his receivers. and finally, management is either forcing this on childress or their all lunchin'.

so who's 'development' are they stunting?

A career backup who's been in the league for eight years with four teams or TWack?

LOL @ everyone acting concerned about Minnesota's long-term prospects. Just say you hate Favre, it's okay.

Most sane observers have been hating on this guy's act for the past seven years. This is still a move that was in Minnesota's best interest to make.

the favre signing fucks up the vikings future? not saying that's your argument, but still. i'll deal with 2 average QBs being pissed over giving up those picks in terms of detriment to the team's development.

warner, i'm not sure was ever really an option. AZ wanted him, he wanted them. mcnabb would have been sweet, but would only really have been an option if the eagles didn't finish the season so strong. vick? our lot was already cast with favre by the time vick was reinstated, and the MN fanbase is way too racist to bring vick here. with an owner with shaky support trying to get a new stadium built, vick would have been a PR disaster.

win now or never mind set, why not? If they went after Cutler and it didn't work out Childress gets fired so he doesn't care that the Vikes gave up so much.

When Favre doesn't work out, Favre bounces again and Childress still gets fired.

I would have rather went with the younger Favre (Cutler) and give up a lot than to cast my future to a 39 year old QB with shoulder issues.

Cutler and Cassel were both realistic options and open for the right price.

Warner flirted with the Niners and might have been open to going to the Vikes, who have some good pieces in place.

The only one that was really a long shot was Donovan.

The Cassell shit was beyond retarded and the jury is out on Cutler but Chicago is so starved to have a real QB that it made sense.

Their levels of desperation were not comparable to where the Vikes were.

The Vikes were a good enough team to ride a Frerotte/TJack shit sandwich to a division title and add a Hall of Fame QB to the mix without affecting their roster or cap beyond this season.

Just because Favre is a future HOF QB doesn't mean he will perform like someone destined for Canton. While the cap might be okay next year, the team may not because Childress will most likely get fired, the new coach will probably have to trade up for a young QB in the first round and start from scratch. Thus wasting AP's youth and that defense while a new QB gets coached up.

what part of 'no risk outside of hurting the feelings of the two bum QBs they have' don't you get?

That's different than trading the 34th pick in the draft/committing 70 million to Matt Cassel or giving up multiple first-round picks for a young entitled QB with a career losing record thus far.

If Chilly doesn't win this year, he's gone anyway. He knows that. That's why he let Favre be a prima donna, skip camp, and join the team anyway. Because he knows that's his best shot at winning something this year.

He had no leverage in this situation and couldn't afford to take a stand for prideful reasons.

And miss me with wasting AP, he's about to receive less attention than he would have if they'd have stuck with the guys they had.

Not a single one of you have made a decent point in this thread to me. He's a diva, an asshole, he thinks the rules don't apply to him, whatever. Welcome to 2002.

He still is a better QB than Sage & TJack and you gave up nothing to get him. Period, end of story.

He is 39, has shoulder issues, doesn't take care of the ball, takes too many risk, doesn't listen to coaches, thinks his arm can bail him out, thinks he still has the arm of a 26 year old, he will wear down as the season goes along, and NFL competition>>>>>>>>>Hattiesburg HS football team he has been practicing with all summer.

I won't wanna root for, I'm just saying he's a better quarterback option than what they have.

I mean you're appealing to my gambling lust so gun to my head I'd be down for a wager because I do think they make the playoffs but I'd rather not give myself a reason to root for Favre in a purple jersey.

they should have no problem doing the same with a future HOF like Favre behind center this year.

We would have to set up the rules obviously Favre would have to be the one to lead them and start the playoff game, barring injury of course.

However, if Favre gets pulled for throwing too many funballs, Vikes look like they won't make it, but TJack or Sage come in turn things around and the Vikes still make the playoffs, I win.

that would mean we're not acknowledging the improvement of the division from Detroit actually winning a few games (it'll happen), the Pack improving on D while Rodgers gets more comfortable at the helm, and the Bears presumably having a real quarterback for the first time in 25 years.

Those variables make the comparison hard to quantify. Other than a few perennialy competive playoff-level teams (The Pats, Steelers, Eagles, Chargers) over the past five years or so, things see-saw fairly quickly.

It's possible for the Vikes to have a better offense with Favre but still not get in.

Well, I'm pretty positive Favre (if healthy) ain't getting pulled for either of those guys and I can't see either one saving the season.....so I'm unconcerned with that aspect of the wager.

What concerns me is having a stake in this dude's success but this post is damn near making me have to do so anyway so if you wanna do something light that I don't care much about losing (say, $50) then I'd be good with it.

Detroit will be somewhat improved, the Bears and Pack should also push the Vikes. I actually like the Pack to win the NFC North this year.

Yeah nothing big, I am not a Vike or Favre fan so I don't want to invest too much time in this. $50 sounds good to me.

Also would you be down for a side Pac-10 bet? A lot of people are picking USC to win the Pac-10 again, I am saying this is the year they finally get got. You interested?

Yeah, let's do $50 on that as well. This really should be the year they get got though. This is a rebuilding year but they've won in those situations before. I'm frightened of a true frosh starting, particularly now that the starting vet center just went down too and you're replacing a lot on the defense.

Don't tell guru or 3XC but I could even see them losing in Columbus this year.

I'm still trying to figure out why Taylor Mays stayed. Not that I'm complaining but damn.

They have a pretty good D and a great running back, and don't need somebody to throw for 350 every time out to win games--they won 10 last season with Gus Frerotte under center 3/4 of the time. In that division, if they run the ball effectively, maintain possession, and don't give up a lot of points, they're in the playoffs.

So why sign a guy whose entire career is based on throwing for 350, no matter how many picks it takes to do it?

Had they signed Vick, they could have trotted Rosenfels or whoever out there for six games, then brought Vick in to run a very simplified, ball-control offense, which I'm sure he's capable of doing even after a few years off.

Basically, while I don't think much of Vick as a QB, he brings a LOT more to the table right now than Favre.

In response to Reply # 0

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/08/18/favre/index.html

It's ridiculous.

when he comes to GB? Do they eventually forgive him or do they also boo him when he goes to the HOF?

Does this, assuming it goes bad hurt his chances of getting in on first ballot?

either way though. I wanted Rodgers to take the job when he did..so I didn't give a fuck where Favre ended up. My whole life as a GB fan I've never worshipped Favre.

And are you joking with that last question?

He won't be able to control him after going thru all this to get him, he's going to gamble and cost the team games, the players who didn't want him there will get more vocal, Childress is gone next offseason.

stupid as hell to sign this egomaniac for this much money and you won't get anywhere with it and then you lose the 2 QBs that are supposed to be future. sounds familiar. only difference is there won't be a mark Sanchez there to help the vikes out.

can't wait to see favre either throw mad interceptions or get hurt early int he season and quit on the team.

By the way, the Jets won in spite of Favre, not because of Favre.

The Favre and I
Sports Illustrated's Peter King falls out of love with his favorite source.

By Josh LevinPosted Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at 5:36 PM ET

Every hero needs someone to champion his heroics. Samuel Johnson had Boswell, the Kennedys got their reputations buffed by Arthur Schlesinger Jr., and Sidney Blumenthal massaged the Clintons. Fred Barnes defended George W. Bush when no one else would. Pauline Kael forever touted Brian De Palma. And Brett Favre has always had Peter King.

King and Favre are the sports world's leading symbiotes. For two decades and 78 retirements and unretirementsincluding Tuesday's signing with the Minnesota Vikingsthe quarterback has given Sports Illustrated's football scribe unrivaled access to his life and inner thoughts. In return, King has lovingly documented Favre's on-the-field derring-do and off-the-field tractor-riding and lawn-mowing. For King, the QB has been both a meal ticket and a member of his extended family: The twosome dined together on the Fridays before Packers games and shared quality time on Favre's Mississippi property.

As Favre began to contemplate retirement, the writer and the source stayed close. When the quarterback has that sinking feeling he might want to retire, King gets the first phone call. "I'm just tired," the QB told the writer last year. "I wish I had some big dramatic reason why. But I don't."

But King's perpetual contact with football's leading Wrangler pitchman hasn't helped him divine Favre's ins and outs. "So now I've been wrong three times," King lamented last month. "I thought he was retired last year and he played for the Jets. I thought he was retired this year, and I said he'll come back to play for the Vikings unless his arm is a problem. His arm wasn't. And he still isn't going to play. That's why I give up." After Favre's move to Minnesota this week, it's time to update the tally: King has now been wrong four times.

A timeline of the King-Favre relationshipas seen in clips from Sports Illustrated and SI.comreveals a gradual change over time. In the beginning, King writes like a proud parent documenting his child's first steps. In recent weeks, he's taken on the demeanor of a father who's forever getting strung along by a drug-addict sonhe desperately wants to believe that he's hearing the truth this time, but he's been burned so many times before

The early years
Sports Illustrated, Oct. 5, 1992: For the second time in eight days Favre (rhymes with carve) stole the show, leading the Packers to victory. Reining in Favre's enthusiasm may be Holmgren's biggest task. After the winning drive against the Bengals, Favre ran off the field jumping and screaming as if he'd won the lottery. The game, however, was only tied, at 23. "I've got a lot to learn," says Favre.

Middle age
Sports Illustrated, Oct. 11, 1999: Favre turns 30 on Oct. 10, and few signs point to the only three-time MVP in the history of the league being any less of a player in his 30s. "Thirty's just a number," Favre says.
SI.com, Dec. 11, 2000: "If in two years, say, they want to trade me, I'd probably walk away. Retire." And when you retire? "I'll be down in Hattiesburg. You'll never find me. You know the HBO 'Where are They Now?' segments on Inside the NFL? They'll do one on me, but they'll have to get Robert Stack, like on Unsolved Mysteries. I'll disappear."

An early warning sign
Sports Illustrated, Nov. 8, 2004: In 1995, SI dispatched me to Green Bay to do a story on a week in the life of a football team. I got close to Favre, spending a couple of long evenings at his home. And when he went into a rehab center the next spring for his Vicodin addiction, I thought, "I was around this guy for hours and hours, and I never knew. How could I have been deceived?"

Brett thinks about retiring
Sports Illustrated, April 24, 2006: You'd never have thought that a little indecision could tarnish the legend of Brett Favre in Green Bay. But with each day the 36-year-old quarterback spends on his family's 465-acre spread in Hattiesburg, Miss., without deciding if he will return to the Packers for one more season, the folks up north seem to love him less and less.

Brett retires
Sports Illustrated, March 12, 2008: He led the league in sarcasm, but open his veins and he'd bleed honesty, just as he did when he announced his retirement. "I'm just tired," he told me. "I wish I had some big dramatic reason why. But I don't. I know I can still play, but mentally, I'm just drained." That's the guy I expect the retired Favre to be like. Doing battle with the dam-building beavers on his property. Edging the front lawn abutting the road in front of the house. Golfing.

Sports Illustrated, March 17, 2008: Army Special Forces Team Sgt. Scott Olson can relate to Favre. He's the Army's version of a quarterback, leading a well-trained 12-man unit, creating a strategy to attain an objective and then like a quarterback audibling in the face of the unexpected changing the plan on the fly if the need arises. Olson and his men felt for Favre. They wondered if he'd pull a Michael Jordan and come back. Very doubtful, I said. He's had enough.

Brett thinks about unretiring
SI.com, April 4, 2008: Brett Favre, startled this morning to see the enormity of a report on a morning sports show that he might play football again, said he is not considering coming out of retirement. Most days he eats breakfast at home with wife Deanna and daughter Breleigh, drives Breleigh to school and spends the day working on his property, mowing and edging and clearing land. "Deanna says I'm married to my property,'' he said.

SI.com, July 7, 2008: is arm has felt pain-free and strong. That, plus the fact he hasn't found anything else to do in retirement other than the chores on his 465 acres in Hattiesburg, is making him think he wants to play football again.

Sports Illustrated, Aug. 4, 2008: Tortured is too strong a word to describe what Favre, leaning against the polished marble counter in his spacious kitchen, and his wife, sitting, often shaking her head, were going through on Saturday night. But agonized isn't far off. "I don't know what I'll do," said a weary Favre, running a hand over his customary six-day stubble.

Brett unretires
SI.com, Aug. 7, 2008: As he walked down the tunnel in Cleveland Browns Stadium Thursday evening, seconds before meeting his new team, Brett Favre looked beat. Could you blame him? Twenty hours earlier, he'd made a life-altering decision, welcoming a trade to the New York Jets. And now, after a one-hour flight to Clevelandin khaki shorts and gray T-shirt, the whites of his eyes pink from fatigueFavre paused a few steps from the entrance to his new life. "I'm worn out,'' he said. "Just worn out.''

Brett thinks about retiring again
SI.com, Jan. 3, 2009: Speaking to Brett Favre Friday night from Mississippi, I got the distinct impression that he was going to retire from football, this time for good.

Brett retires again
SI.com, Feb. 11, 2009: "Yeah.'' That's the text message I got back this morning from Brett Favre after I sent him one that said, simply: "Can I confirm the report that you're retiring for good?'' Could he change his mind? Sure. Will he? I sincerely doubt it, even if his arm starts feeling right again.

SI.com, Feb. 16, 2009: I've saved the four-minute voice-message from him on my cell phone the day he quit, and when I've played it for people, I've asked, "Does that sound like a guy who was retiring with a lot of doubt in his mind?'' And everyone says no.

Brett thinks about unretiring again
SI.com, May 4, 2009: I don't know what he's going to do. But I, like some of you, am suspicious. There's no good reason to ask for his release from the Jets unless it's to leave open the option to play again. I know you're sick of this story. We all are. But my gut feeling is Favre never completely got this Vikings fixation out of his system.

Brett decides to stay retired:
SI.com, July 28, 2009: I give up. So now I've been wrong three times. I thought he was retired last year and he played for the Jets. I thought he was retired this year, and I said he'll come back to play for the Vikings unless his arm is a problem. His arm wasn't. And he still isn't going to play. That's why I give up. Don't ask me anymore what I think about Favre, whether I think he's going to play or whether I think he's going to mow the grass for the rest of his life. I don't know because I honestly don't think he knows.

SI.com, Aug. 4, 2009: hen I was settling in to watch some practice tape my cell rang. It was Favre, saying he just didn't trust his body to make it through 16 games, not given the way it felt after he worked it hard the past few weeks, getting it ready for the Vikings' grind. And he was pretty sure this was the end, but come midseason, if some team calls, who knows? Favre was down. He just sounded beat, like he had nothing left to give, and a little depressed. "I'm sure I'll regret it down the road," he said.

Brett unretires again:
SI.com, Aug. 18, 2009: Favre's the wishy-washiest player in memoryand the Vikings are his enablers. It's ridiculous.

he went to consecutive Super Bowls and won three straight MVPs in the mid-to-late 90s, he was the best QB in football.

That run is what allowed him to end up being 'overrated' for the better part of this decade.

he had a great supporting cast. always has. he wasn't even the MVP for the Super Bowl they won.

Elway was better. Carried a team on his back himself to 3 Super Bowls. And won 2 more.

Marino literally carried a Dolphin team with no RB and no defense to a Super Bowl.

Favre has always been well-liked and deemed as "fun", and so his flaws as a QB have always been overlooked.

i didn't realize you had a man-crush on him. but then again, you liked to swing from Holmgren's nuts too, so....

but Favre never had a running back like TD in those Super Bowl years. The O-line at Denver was also second to none. I think an argument can be made either way.

Who gives a fuck if he was the MVP for the Super Bowl they won?

Dude was MVP of the league three years in a row and easily the best QB of that time period. So how are you 'overrated' in that context?

>Elway was better. Carried a team on his back himself to 3

Uh, find me where I mentioned Brett Favre was better than John Elway. Joe Montana was better than both, that's still irrelevant to the conversation.

And LOL @ penalizing Favre for not getting an MVP while Elway passed for just over 100 yards in his first Super Bowl win while TD set a Super Bowl record.

>Marino literally carried a Dolphin team with no RB and no

lol, so was Edgar Bennet the catalyst on that title team?

And when did I say Favre was better than Dan Marino?

Nah, I've actually hated Brett Favre for the entire decade.

I just call out stupidity and blind hate when I see it. 'Always has been overrated' is a clear example.

Always has been overrated relative to the QB's i just mentioned above.

He gets the most love and adulation, and those guys were better QB's. much better.

the truth of the matter is that Favre has been washed-up for years. And is so-called great years had more to do the with players around him than Favre himself.

he is done. And still has a tear in his shoulder. he is not a leader. he is selfish, and a me-first player.

i don't see how the vikings are that much better with him now, given those circumstances.

if Brett were in his prime, then yeah, it looks great.

but again, the love for Favre blinds everyone to his faults and flaws as a player, teammate, and QB.

if you think brett favre is more adulated than joe montana. the fact of the matter is, montana retired in '94, marino and elway in '99, so you have had 10-15 MORE YEARS of favre. of course the announcers and media are going to talk about a guy who is STILL PLAYING the game. but brady was painted as the next montana, not the next favre. elway, marino, and favre can be tossed around almost interchangeably, but the edge will often go to the guy still playing and breaking records and making news. sorry!

They were nowhere near the same teams Elway led early in his career...and also don't forget that the Denver team that won the 97 Super Bowl were like 13 point underdogs, nobody expected them to win.

http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/2009/08/fking-lazy-old-cksucker-fk.html

Oh, so NOW you decide to sign, you fucking cockrut? Only now, because you were too fucking old and lazy to actually bother with training camp, you stubbled assgazer? I am supposed to be relieved that you finally changed your mind, you fucking douchetender? Oh, thank God youre here! Thank God the man who had a worse passer rating than T-Jack and Gus Frerotte combined last year, AND threw more picks than both of them, is now in the fold! Huzzah! Another triumphant playoff loss to the Eagles is all but assured now!

Say, this is funny. Remember two weeks ago, when Brett Favre told Lofty Peter King just how devastated he was that he had to say no to the Vikings? When really he just was just lying right through his fucking bumpkin teeth because he didnt want to bother to do things like get into shape or learn the playbook? That was fun. And Im crazy excited for the press conference later today, when he explains that he changed his mind when really, he didnt want to bother to do things like get into shape or learn the playbook. BUT THATS BRETT FAVRE FOR YOU. HE JUST LOVES THE GAME TOO DAMN MUCH.

YOU MASSIVE SHITBURGLAR. NOW I HAVE TO SPEND A WHOLE GODDAMN YEAR PRETENDING TO WISH YOU WELL WHEN, IN FACT, I HOPE YOU FALL OFF YOUR PORCH AND HAVE YOUR THROAT SLASHED BY A BEER BOTTLE. I FUCKING HATE YOU, YOU FUCK.

Look, I get that the Vikings have a real problem with the QB position. But really, does anyone think the ultimate solution for this team is a 39-year-old pick machine who confesses to having a tired body and doesnt actually want to do any of the hard work involved with playing the position successfully? Thats what makes Favre so fucking annoying. Fuggit. Ill jusgeddoutdurr anthrowitaroun. This guy has been in the league for years and years, and he still somehow thinks he doesnt have to do any of the shit everyone else has to do to win games. Hes quarterbacks the way Steve fucking Spurrier coaches.

The fact of the matter is that Brett Favre doesnt actually love football. Say what you will about Peyton Manning, but that guy genuinely loves the football: studying tape and all that shit. Favre doesnt. He just loves being a football player. He likes running out having people scream his name and all that shit. Thats all. And thats fine. I dont begrudge any man that right. But I dont want to hear about how hes coming back for the love of the game. If he loved the game so much, hed work to NOT FUCKING SUCK AT IT WHEN IT COUNTS. Just the kind of player who fits into the Vikings organization. I hate that I root for this goddamn team.

Its gonna be a long year. GOD FUCKING DAMMIT.

while i never agreed with your tjack hate -- had to stay supportive -- you managed this post well and did our job for us in defending this move.

couple things to keep in mind:
1. favre's most productive years were when he had one of the best running games in the league. is he the same player physically? no, but he will not be relied on to win games tossing 350 yds on 40-50 attempts. i believe his reputation over the last 10 years took a hit because a) he had NO running game to fall back on and b) he didn't have a coach strong enough to reign him in.
2. our defense and running game should control most games to the degree where he will have to make a few completions here and there to keep the defense honest and the chains moving. favre would not have traveled this far down the road and not be made to understand that our running game comes first and all he needs is to manage the game.
3. our receiving corps is underrated because of the crap qb play they have had to deal with the past handful of years. with AP and favre in the backfield, our receivers should have plenty of space to operate and be productive. berrian had a damn fine year last year considering his qbs. i would imagine those numbers could look a lot better with a more competent qb back there for the majority of the season.

people can hate favre for how he handles himself year to year and being the diva that he is, but don't let that shit blind you to the fact that favre is a considerable upgrade at minimal cost over what we had. if it works out, then we immediately put ourselves into the top-tier NFC discussion with a possibly huge payoff.

i think we compare nicely to the late 90s broncos teams now.

In response to Reply # 0

"I really have no interest in what Brett Favre does. He kind of lost me a few years ago by retiring and unretiring and here and there," Tarkenton said on "The Opening Drive" on Sirius NFL Radio.

"I asked a few friends here, maybe 10 or 12 people we were out with last night. I said, 'What do you think about Brett Favre going back to the Vikings?' You know who cared? Nobody. It's good news for you guys. It's good news for television and so forth but the last time I heard ... football was a team sport, isn't it? It's not just about the quarterback."

"I think he has been a great flamboyant quarterback, but he has made more stupid plays than any great quarterback that I've ever seen. Look at his final game in a Packers uniform. He blew that game against the Giants," Tarkenton said in late May on KFAN-1130 in the Twin Cities.

other bum ass QBs on the Vikings could have led them to the NFCC, nor any of the free agent prospects.

If the Vikings lose next week, even if Favre doesn't play well, you can't say shit about him.

And if not - they could have had Garcia, Pennington, Leftwich, or any other serviceable QB that's been available over the past two years. And they could have pulled off a trade for Cutler(c)Cere

(on sage & favre) they both suck, so why invite the circus to town?(c)smuts

again, Favre = Sage, there are too many underlying issues for the above statement to not be true.
he's supposed to adapt to his teammates, especially his receivers, in three weeks? lol
dude is going to be out there chucking. at least Rosenfels would (should) be a more effective chucker. he knows the offense and *should* already be on the same page with his receivers.
this shit is going to be a mess and Im going to love every minute of it.(c)RandomFact

Childress will be fired by midseason(c)JAESCOTT777

Cutler and Cassel were both realistic options and open for the right price.(c)calij81

Basically, while I don't think much of Vick as a QB, he brings a LOT more to the table right now than Favre.(c)Buck

Favre will cost them at least 2 wins and divide the locker room(c)DJ Contact

Vikes won't make the playoffs and they'll start from scratch next year.
stupid as hell to sign this egomaniac for this much money and you won't get anywhere with it and then you lose the 2 QBs that are supposed to be future. sounds familiar. only difference is there won't be a mark Sanchez there to help the vikes out.
can't wait to see favre either throw mad interceptions or get hurt early int he season and quit on the team.(c)Nesta

Favre is overrated, always has been, always will. can't wait to see this team implode, because it will.(c)jambone

and finally whoever the writer for kissingsuzykolber was who wrote that manifesto & who probably bought a jersey recently.
