they were down big in the first half and were sluggish defensively. The one thing that kobe does when he ball hogs, at least THIS year, is he brings it defensively too.

He might fuck around and get 70 though.

Kobe is a great great great scorer. I just said that they won't make the playoffs that's all. he can score eighty one, that's great and very historic but he still has a lot to improve upon.

I never said he wasn't great though.

Kobe trying to commit a foul on purpose to get out of the game to get applause. But then Sasha tries to throw it out of bounds on purpose so he can get out of the game but Odom saves it..then one of the Raps throws it out of bounds on purpose so he finally gets to leave the game.

..i wanted to compare what was bein' questioned in kobe's performance tonight

anytime one player has a game of this magnitude, it usually reflects poorly on the stats of the rest of the team (win OR loss)...

Let's not get outta hand.

I love Kobe and I think he's a top 3 MVP candidate, but Steve Nash and Chauncey Billups are, at this point, clearly better candidates. My only hesitation saying Chauncey is a better candidate is that he has a far, far, far superior team but the things he and the Pistons are doing are better than what Nash did with a great starting 5 with the Suns last year so you can never discredit that.

If the Lakers can somehow get 4th or 5th seed, Kobe should be the MVP.

..i never thought this was possible in today's game (70, yeah, but 80+?)

i mean, wit' the way the game is played, the shot clock, etc.

the thing about this is that its not like this was forced

he did this mostly as a comeback effort, 'cause they were down for a good portion of the game (and yes, the lakeshow STILL have a lot of work to do before they start eyein' rings again)

shots from EVERYWHERE

and he did this on a sore ankle???

for him to get 81 is amazin'

fuck the haters (i know SOME of you are prob'ly too young to remember, but even jordan had haters after goin' for 69)

i need to rip this, and save it, 'cause this is history

damn...

But I mean, he didn't have to score 81 to win this game, but he definitely had to get 55. They were losing by what, 18 at the half? They obviously needed him to win this one, and they needed him to do something special.

But, I do see what you mean. He can't do this for a whole season and expect to have any success in the playoffs whatsoever. Plus it definitely makes his teammates rely on him in ways they shouldn't, so I do agree and disagree all at once.

80 points is hard to fault a man for, whether there are negative aspects or not.

I mean, it's 80 points and I don't even think he set a career high for fga's.

The league REALLY needed this.

If this is something that the league needs, it's clear it's a huge historic moment. If that's the case, then one regular season history making game isn't a bad thing when it results in a team win. There is no negative to this unless the next game he feels he has to do the same thing. They needed him this game and the returning back to triangle discipline after this is PJ's job. It's really not that serious.

The league needed it since it's been plagued by lower-scores since the 2000's hit us. To have a player do it in the midst of what I'd call a scoring-drought is going to have fans drooling. Look @ this thread alone. Ppl who don't even like Kobe are in here throwing up Westside. I think there are a lot of ppl who had given up on the league who will start watching regularly again, just based on the potential.

That's not healthy for a team struggling to find their roles like the Lakers. I don't know why you two are having such a hard time grasping that.

It would be even worse for the C's if Pierce did it than it is for the Lakers with Kobe doing it. 'Cause we're worse and younger and struggling a lot more.

if you dont watch the complete game. Kobe carried us offensively in the first half as well, he had 26, in 18 minutes I think, of the 49 at half. His scoring is what picked up the other guys and they fed into it to start playing great energy defense.

capable or not, he should not be expected to put up 50-60 points a night. I honestly think he does need to put up 38-40 a night for them to win, but everybody else has to put their work in as well

The rest of the team was horrible on the offensive end man. LO couldnt finish worth shit and he kept getting caught in the paint with nothing to do, everyone else didnt move at all even on penetration, and we werent even running the gotdamn offense.

The team was down 18 in the 3rd fam, and we were playing horrible. ALthough I usually dont like Kobe having huge games at the expense of the others, the rest of the crew was just off man.

We are talking about possibly going for 80 points here man and there were only like 5 mins left, so seriously, I have no problem with him trying to get it.

up to that point when Kobe started scoring, hands down....and its up to PJ and the coaching staff to make sure they understand that. The Portland game was just as bad defensively, but tonight, no one was moving on offense either. Kobe HAD to do it tonight, there was no help what so ever, PERIOD.

You think Phil will let these cats get away with the game regardless of the victory? He has already seen a problem with sunday games, addressed it, and then had another meeting with the team after these last two losses. Then they come out and lay this egg for 2.5 quarters.....he was gonna let them have it regardless of Kobe going off and winning, esp with 4 days off now, he will really be able to get some point across.

We need to learn to the point one of our PG's (Delonte so far) can be trusted to take care of the ball so Pierce can play more in the flow of the offense without worrying about doing everything. We work him to the bone and we shouldn't have to. Last season with Payton was a big look @ the potential the team has if they find a PG (notice the C's fans pushing for Brevin Knight or Earl Watson during the off-season, we got Scales and Dickau).

Pierce's game wasn't made to handle the ball as much as he does.

If no one is working well on offense, Kobe can bail you out. Sometimes thats what superstars do. However, the team responded with a quarter and half of the most active defense and rebouding I have seen this year. The hustle I saw on the defense was a huge part of the victory, and why wouldnt you feed someone shooting 60%? You think they dont realize that everyone else was off?

What was Smush focusing on in his post game interview? How about how he said that the most important thing to him about this game was how much the team defense picked it up and was vital. You have some perception when it comes to the lakers and knowing what they actually think considering the SPECIFIC circumstances that we saw in this game, particularly the laziness and horrible game the rest of the team showed in the first 2.5 quarters.

I did notice their defense pick up. I saw the 2nd half. I plan on watching the whole game this weekend.

I'm not dissing this game. I luv the fact Kobe scored 80 points. Gods forbid I actually bring any possible negative effect on the team into it.

Yall are in some serious denial if you think shit is gonna change in 2 years.

Kobe scoring 80 tonight is going to set the team back about 30 games and the lakers will fall 15 games under .500

GTFOOHWTBS

Only one other player scored over 80pts in the history of the NBA. And he was a center.

It's the middle of the fuckin regular season.

Not only was the team down big with nobody but kobe hitting anything in the first half. But they won big and the rest of the team was more than active participants in trying to help him make history.

Anybody trying to find something negative in this shit is just hating and probably didn't watch the game. If Kobe is averaging 50 pts a game, then it's a problem. I repeat, it's a regular season game and a WIN.

The team came out SO lackadaisacal tonight, people wont understand this unless they saw the first 2.5 quarters...this was honestly our worst game of the year defensively for that time and for everyone else offensively, PERIOD.

That's not bullshit. The Lakers wont be successful as a team with Kobe playing the over-protective parent role. You can't be successful by thinkign it's okay to have off nights 'cause Kobe will bail you out. It's fine in the short-term, say, when you win a game. It's bad in the long-term, say, when you hit the playoffs and Kobe is playing against the Spurs or Suns instead of the Raptors.
If the team doesn't get that chance to struggle and learn the game, then they're not going to be a successful team. Point blank. Kobe going for 80 points is great for Kobe, great for the NBA, and great for the win tonight. If you can't think of the long-term implications of this shit then you need to brush up on your basketball fanship.

>Only one other player scored over 80pts in the history of the
>NBA. And he was a center.

Right. It's an amazing feat to score 80 points in a game. I think that's fucking dope that he passed Jordan by 10+ points.

>It's the middle of the fuckin regular season.
>

Oh right. It's the regular season. Wtf does a regular season game matter for? In fact, we should just have a lottery to choose playoff teams from now on and skip the entire regular season. Since regular season games don't have an impact on a team. It's just the middle of the fucking regular season. I wasn't using my head. It all makes sense now. I'm never watching a regular season game again. I want my money back.

>Not only was the team down big with nobody but kobe hitting

Yeah, I understand Kobe had to bail them out. He did it in top fashion. But making history? Sure, he gets his name on a list. That will always linger over other team's heads when they play against Kobe.

... but...

Kobe's rings > Kobe's 80 points

That's the history that matters. That's the history that I'm touching on when I ask if this was a really a good thing for the Lakers. Again, over-protective parent syndrome. Kids with over-protective parents are almost always late-bloomers.

Anyone not looking @ possible negative implications in this shit is just a dick riding bitch.

Don't act like this is the first time Kobe has dominated possessions like this. Noone's hating on Kobe. Noone's saying what he did ain't right.

What I AM saying, is that the Lakers aren't going to improve that way as a team. A shiny new record doesn't hold weight in the playoffs.

The Lakers aren't going to learn how to come back from behind. They're not going to learn how to play their games to their advantage. They're not going to learn how to feed off eachother. They're not going to learn how to survive in the playoffs. Kobe is doing it all for them like the over-protective parent.

Again, this has a positive impact on their record. However, it's my opinion that it has had, and will continue to have, a negative impact on the Lakers as a team. As far as attitude and as far as good old basketball experience goes, Kobe's soaking too much of it up for them.

I'm not hating on Kobe's 80-point game. I'm just looking out for the Lakers. You should be doing the same.

You just admitted you didn't watch the first half. So your assessment of this particular game is fuckin irrelevant. The team had no life on offense or defense. Kobe sat the majority of the second quarter and the team did absolutely nothing. This is a ridiculous time to be trying to find negatives in this game. Lamar was the one who told him what he was capable of doing some time in the second half of the game. And just in case you haven't noticed, the talent around Kobe and Lamar isn't all that great. A part of being a superstar IS to pick up your team when they don't have it going. They didn't have it going. deal with it.

You can't

They're 3 games over .500 and have pissed away a number of "shoulda coulda" games. They're struggling and learning. You sound dumb right now man. What you're basically saying is Kobe has fuckin neuter his game even if it means possibly sacrificing a winnable game to "learn". this is assinine.

>Right. It's an amazing feat to score 80 points in a game. I

So what you're saying is, once Kobe stops being the over protective parent, the sooner this team can win a ring? Dude, you sound like a fucking idiot right now. I won't call you an idiot. but this team has Sasha Vujacic getting big minutes. We're in a rebuilding year with 95% of the roster considered expendable. When this team is talented enough to win a ring, it won't consist of a majority of this lineup. When you're to take this L like a man, let me know.

>Anyone not looking @ possible negative implications in this

I'm dick riding because I'm taking in a historic basketball moment that eclipsed to NFL Conference championships. ok kiddo.

>Don't act like this is the first time Kobe has dominated
>possessions like this. Noone's hating on Kobe. Noone's saying
>what he did ain't right.

What you're saying is it has major implications on the teams long term success. And I'm telling you that's a fuckin ridiculous assessment. For one, it's just one fucking game. And for two, the lakers have had peaks and valleys with regards to balance offensively all season, the consistency with the team balance is not all on what kobe does or doesn't do. This team has a number of young/mediocre players on it. This game isn't even close to being as negative as say the kings game where we fuckin gave the game away.

>What I AM saying, is that the Lakers aren't going to improve
>that way as a team. A shiny new record doesn't hold weight in

Of course this isn't the way to improve as a team. But that's not what you said. you said this was bad. No it's not bad. It's bad when there is a streak of games where Kobe is just scoring 50 ppg. win or lose. But this is an anomoly and there shouldn't be any weight placed on it outside of the history that was made.

>The Lakers aren't going to learn how to come back from behind.

They're not going to learn all that in one game. You're putting too much on it right now dog. lay down.

Well you seem to think that any time Kobe scores more than 30 points, he's hurting the team. We disagree. I think every game has it's own identity. It doesn't make sense for Kobe to hold back and continue run an offense on a given night that isn't producing for the sake of teaching the team. The team will lose games and confidence. The whole purpose of being a star player is to be that protective parent. Does he ballhog and get out of the offense? Sure. not nearly as often as you paint. But yeah he does. Sometimes it works (tonight). Sometimes it doesn't (sac OT). But when the balance is there (see @GS), kobe's on point. This year more than any other, he's been fairly consistent with trying to read where the team is at offensively. The one thing the team has to learn is to get back into the triangle once Kobe has done his thing and either got them the cushion or brought them back. Right now, they can't do that. Once Kobe gets in that mode, you kind of have to ride it out for better or for worse because the triangle is done for the night.

>I'm not hating on Kobe's 80-point game. I'm just looking out
>for the Lakers. You should be doing the same.

I'm looking out for Ws. Anyway we can get it. Brian cook could score 80 and I wouldn't give a shit. But expecting this team to be consistent just by Kobe curbing his aggressiveness is asking a whole lot.

LOL @ my assessment being "fucking irrelevant". You can't disqualify me, bruthr, this ain't a game show. I saw the 2nd half. Accept the fact I saw the game.

You keep talking about the game, when I haven't even been talking about the game. I've been talking about the impact it will have on the Lakers as a team. Catch up. Noone's looking for negatives in the game.

LOL @ you telling me to "deal with it" like you're the authority on the matter.

You're very back and forth about the Lakers. One minute you will suck Kobe off in under 30 seconds and the next minute you act like what he does doesn't matter. It matters when you want it to and you dismiss it when it's not in your best interest to discuss it. That's like, 7th grade argument tactics 101.

You sure ain't lying about the Lakers not beating the Spurs or Suns tho. In fact, they're probly not gonna do shit for a good 5 years the way they're progressing so far.

LMAO! That's the whole point! I cannot fucking believe you don't think Kobe should sacrifice his game to help the team learn and improve. That's pathetic that you think that way. You clearly don't want the Lakers to contend any time soon.

It's not sarcasm and I have not hated on Kobe once in this entire discussion. I like Kobe. He's one of my favorite players. I'm also an honest person who knows the game of basketball. It's YALL who are hating on ME for doing anything other than sucking Kobe Bryant's cock while you tape it. Yall are jerking off to ESPN hilites while I'm maintaining my composure and dropping some honest criticism of THE LAKERS.

The only ppl here who think I'm making an ass of myself want to star in a porn with Kobe. It would be a big group sex flick titled "81 INCHES" or some shit.

Your team isn't going to be capable of getting to the 2nd round within 5 years if Kobe doesn't, yes, sacrifice his game to let the team learn and improve together. That's just common sense. Or maybe I missed the championship team that contended that way. Maybe you could point that team out to me? The team that improved by riding one player's coat tails for x-amount of time until they woke up a contender one morning?

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying. I cannot fathom why you don't understand that. Every championship team in the last 40 years understands that. But you're trying to block it out like you've got post traumatic stress disorder.

When the team is talented enough to win a ring? Give me a window of time in years for that. @ the rate the Lakers are going, Kobe himself wont be a part of that line up.

Why is it a ridiculous assessment? This isn't based on a "because Kobe scored 80 points" thing. This is based on a "if Kobe doesn't slow down and let/force his teammates to improve together they're destined for a C's type of drought" statement. Trust me, you don't want that.

Quit trying to separate this game like it doesn't count. Wtf is wrong with you? It happened. No lie. It's not the first time Kobe has dominated like that while his teammates get forced into the background dressed like tree's and rocks.

>>The Lakers aren't going to learn how to come back from

This isn't one game. Stop trying to separate this game from the others. For the luv of the gods, just 'cause it's a new point total that doesn't make it a new concept.

Who's "we"? You and LA2Philly? The two bruthrs who regularly Google "Kobe Bryant nude" and shit.

You're again making up shit and then stating it like I said it. When did I say "When Kobe scores more than 30 points he's hurting the Lakers"? When the fuck did I say that??? I didn't, so don't act like I did. It's a lie. Don't lie.

Why doesn't it make sense for Kobe to hold back for the sake of teaching the team??? WHY ARE YOU SAYING THAT??? You have to make sacrifices to be successful. This team (or whatever version of this team is around in the window of time you give me for Laker's contention) is not going to improve with Kobe playing this way (and again, don't read that as "with Kobe scoring 80 points" 'cause I've told you already that's not what I'm saying).

It's like you have no concept of IMPROVEMENT. Saying "Once Kobe gets in that mode you kind of have to ride it out for better or for worse because the Triangle is done for the night" is just an elusive way of saying "THE LAKERS ARE THE SUBJECTS AND KOBE IS THE MAJESTY" and that ain't no way to play basketball. Acting like the Lakers are supposed to just accept Kobe playing that way and bow down to his every whim is herb ass shit. No other way of looking @ it, in my opinion. That's not a team and that's just going to keep those guys from ever becoming a real team. We're talking about the Lakers still being wack when Kobe retires. Why wouldn't they be?

>>I'm not hating on Kobe's 80-point game. I'm just looking out
>>for the Lakers. You should be doing the same.
>
>I'm looking out for Ws. Anyway we can get it. Brian cook could
>score 80 and I wouldn't give a shit. But expecting this team
>to be consistent just by Kobe curbing his aggressiveness is
>asking a whole lot.

Why do you want W's when you know you ain't shit? Why would you rather have a winning record rather than a shitty record for a season or two and then a steadily improving record when a team starts to mesh? WHY??? Every NBA authority understands you have to rebuild sometimes. Why not do everything in your power to make that rebuilding successful? Why should the team have to suffer for Kobe to stay in the spot light? It's like paying $90 G's for an education then working @ McDonald's.

>Why doesn't it make sense for Kobe to hold back for the sake of >teaching the team???

cuz this team is not built to go anywhere. the future of this team is kobe and whoever else wants to piss blood for a win. i don't recall jordan "holding back"- actually, he never did, he just was blessed with another animal for a teammate that he ain't have to to teach.

your argument might work for mcgrady/houston, or even arenas/washington, but if you're gonna side with kwame brown and say that kobe is stunting his growth like gilbert did, or even claim that this laker's squad is built for the long haul, i can't ride with that... this is "bernard king carrying a knicks team with NO shot at even a conference title" all over again.

What you see as porn someone else sees as Da Vinci... It's the eye of the beholder. We can only assess that. What makes your music beyond porn? Again, Eye of the Beholder.

Why is everyone acting like the Lakers are going to suddenly have a brand new team some day and that this team doesn't have to learn???

And Jordan always played in the flow of the game.

I'm not saying this squad IS BUILT for the long haul I'm saying they NEED TO BUILD for the long haul. That starts NOW. I don't know how yall don't understand that.

There's not gonna be a day when you get to trade all your shitty players for good players and replace the leftovers with promising young draft picks. It's a PROCESS. It's called REBUILDING.

To act like this team doesn't count is just ASSinine.

that won't happen with the majority of who's out there now. so learning with players that won't be around is pointless.

yes, that takes place in the offseason buddy. in the meantime, you try to win as much as possible.

So you want W's but it's pointless to learn since everyone's not locked up in long term contracts? Do you think the contracts are gonna run out and then the Lakers are gonna instantly put together a 2nd round team?

You don't just rebuild in the off-season. I don't know who told you that but I'd stop asking them for basketball advice.

nicely for me.

Just know that you're the only muhfucka in the universe who thinks this team, as currently constructed, has a shot at a championship once Kobe starts passing the ball the minute kobe starts passing the ball night in and night out, regardless of the outcome. I'm all for Kobe playing within the offense when the team is obviously playing well around him and I have been very vocal early on in the season when Kobe's game actually inhibited the good flow of the offense. With that said, last night was not one of those nights and this team as a whole has not shown the consistency to be able to exclusively rely on the triangle night in and night out. So you can pretend the celtics are just growing as a team by getting their asses handed to them all you want. With this team, I'll take a win anyway I can get it.

Then why are you worried about what the fuck this team learns after one fucking game? this team is not going to win anything without better talent. you're really playing yourself.

Because this year should be all about learning and losing to get a lottery pick. hahha shut theee fuck up. Well you go ahead let your celtics learn with no regards for winning. In the meantime, the lakers have 95% of their roster full of players on two year guaranteed contracts and don't plan on resigning any of them. They're not winning a ring in the next two years, learning or no learning. If we end up getting artest, then we can go back to scrutinizing how well the offense is or isn't flowing.

the interior defense was the main problem and just horrible, early on there was absolutely no help from the bigs and even later, Kobe was just knifing right around them. All his threes were with hands in his faces and about a foot behind the three point line, and his jumpers were heavily contested as well.

yes it was, and there was no one contesting some of those shots.

but that doesn't take away from it one iota. in the same conditions, the only other person who blows up is iverson, but even he wouldn't have gotten more than 60. hell, i'll be a heretic: i don't know if mj could have gotten 81 last night.

I'm only including home games because I can't see this happening on the road.

February 15th vs. the Hawks

February 21st vs. Portland (although I can't see Nate McMillan letting that happen)

February 23rd vs. the Kings

March 12 vs. the Sonics

March 22 vs. the Kings (and they play March 14 at Arco too)

April 14th vs. Portland (if the Lakers are out of the playoffs, I would expect him to go for it on this date)

The Sonics can't guard University of Seattle at this point. Their practice scrimmages lead the league in scoring.

I'm a Sonics fan but I'd be intrigued by the idea of Kobe trying to drop a benjamin on us.

Further proof of the neglected Kobe Bryant-Ray Allen matchup. Those two always bring out the best in one another but not in no record-setting way. What about 100 aganist Golden State later this week? The man is on right now. Averaging 43.4 ppg since Dec. 20. And now Kobe gets his rest.

This game was a legit game until about 4 minutes left.

The lakers were down by almost double digits towards the end of the third.

Kobe is a wing player in a league full of guys his size and similar atheleticism. Wilt was a man among boys.

28-46 fg
7-13 3pt
6 rebounds
3 steals
2 assists
1 blk

unreal. i was literally pressing the button to turn off the tv when up pops one of those (normally) weak ass sportscenter polls:
"when did you learn kobe scored 81 pts?" i was like "WTF?! right fucking now!" So I watch the recap and it was sick just watching the highlights. Just when I'd written off the nba after sleeping through that sixers-wolves game something "fantastic" actually happened. I'm downloading that replay from somewhere tonight!

props to numero ocho.

169. "RECAP OF KOBES PRESS CONFERENCE:"
In response to Reply # 0

Recap for those that missed the press conference

Kobe says it really hasnt sunk in (scoring 81) He said hed feel sick as a dog if they lost this game

Never thought in his dreams he would score that much. It just happens. Its one of those things. lol

Such a blessing to play for the Lakers org.

when asked when he knew he was feeling hot... said it wasnt until Lamar reminded him of how many points he could go for when he said to himself "Oh Sh--"

he feeds off the crowd and its good to put on a show for the fans. they saw him grow up now theyre seeing him as an older young man.

it really hasnt set in that he scored 81. its all about the W. thats why he turned it on (in the 3rd) then it just turned into something special. wanted to keep riding the wave and demoralize oponents and "just turned into this" says he cant admit to grasping the importance of a night like this yet. hasnt sunk in.

phil and him are on the same page. he knows calls before phil even makes calls. they just connect like that. "its like on some Jedi type of thing" (smiles). phil and him have been through so many battles.he plays the game to try and please phil. "if hes happy with my performance, it makesme happy because i learned the game from him. he taught me how to play. if im not playing the right way.... if hes dissapointed, i take it pretty hard." phil told kobe he was proud of the way he played tonight. it makes him feel good to hear that from phil.

Reporter asks: "Kobe are you sure the 81 points wasnt just a distraction from keeping us from asking you about those two missed free throws"
Kobe:"Ah, I was pissed about that!, Ah dude, I was so pissed (shaking his head smiling) "i wanted to continue that streak... but then... "I CHOKED" lol

Reporter asks does it put it in perspective to think that Michael Jordan never had a night like this?
Kobe: "nah, not really. ive been compared to him so many times and I just wished they would Just STOP. you know what i mean? Just Stop. he was Michael Jordan, Im Kobe Bryant, were two different players. i wish people would let it go. it really Annoys me. (laughs a little)
Reporter: "Why"
Kobe:you cant compare what im doing to what hes doing. hes one of the greatest players, if not THE greatest player of all time. its not fair for us as a youger generation to constantly be compared to such Greatness. from myself to LBJ and other young players, youre talkin about Magic, MJ, these guys . .. we cant measure up to them. its important for us to go out there and play the game we know how to play and hopefully people will enjoy what we do as players and not compared to what theyve done.

"THeres no comparison. Hes Jordan and Im Kobe. I wish people would stop trying to measure up what i do in comparison to what hes done. Let what i do just speak for itself.

Compared to Dallas, the points tonight were more gratifying cause "we needed them". lakers were down and needed to get out of hole they were in. "the points i put in the basket were instrumental for regaining that momentum and energy. It means way more (than the dallas game)

"i trained my but off this summer. i went pedal tot he metal. conditioning wise im ready (to take on the world ) i prepare myself for every game...i call Kwame and Chris my offensive line. they set incredible screens for me to free me up... its a collection of things. not just me scoring. i need help from my teammates.they set excellent screens for me. great passes. without them i couldnt score 81 points."
(Continued)
BORROWED FROM FATSAMS RECAP(Thanks FATSAM, hope its OK)

Magic said he'd seen a lot of basketball, but he'd never seen anything like this, he's proud of Kobe, don't listen to others criticizing him, just know I'm here to support you and I've got your bacck through everything.

Can you score 100?

Kobe:: "Oh, dude, are you kidding me? I guess it's possible, I don't know. That's unthinkable. It's exhausting to think about it."

Teammates & staf are asking Kobe to autograph stats sheets & such. Tremendous honor.

Reporter: "You have four days off -- you going out to celebrate?"

"Tonight I'll go home and gget some more therapy on my ankle and knee. Them tomorrow, make breakfast, watch cartoons -- Tom and Jerry."
Natalia is waiting for Daddy to give her her bath. Kobe laughs and leaves the podium.

Fucking NUTS. I can't wait to see this game. Part of me doesn't even want to check highlights just so it can all be new when they re-run it. INSANE.

I'm officially shelving my Kobe hate for the season, playoffs or not. If only he wasn't on the Lakers he might be one of my favorite players to watch in the league.

This 81 point game is showing everyone that they are truly basketball fans. You got people shelving their Kobe hate, if only temporarily. People are just in awe of an amazing achievement, and it just boils down to the fact that when it comes down to it - we all love the game more than our teams/players.

That's real.

In terms of degree of difficulty this is an AMAZING accomplishment. I believe this game brings Kobe into the echelon of true greatness as a prolific NBA scorer.

He writes backwards but he's better to work with then half the students here.

There are games where a team doesn't score 81 points.

Most people's career high...even Kobe's old one, teams are almost guaranteed night in and night out to at least score that much. It isn't completley unusual to see a score from a team under 81 points. Kobe scored that much tonight. THAT MUCH. 81! I still can't believe it.

How often is it that a superstar scorer like Kobe tops his career high of 56 points twice in a MONTH? 56, then 62, then 81. Dude just outright skipped the 70s, lol. The way he's been playing (OUT OF HIS MIND) lately, I think he'll be able to have another 60 point game this year, easily.

That last game put him in an elite group with players like T-Mac, AI, Shaq, Karl Malone, etc. Now? He's in a whole new echelon in terms of high scoring games. I'm in shock. It's incredible to me. It's a feat that comes once in a lifetime, literally. I mean, the last time someone scored close to that many points was nearly 16 years ago man. I'm in shock.

Not to diminish MJ's 69 point playoff game, cause that is simply one INCREDIBLE feat (esp. against the dominant Celtics), but it wasn't like the dude didn't get in a zone against shitty defensive teams himself. If Kobe dropped 81 on the Pistons, sure it'd be a much bigger accomplishment, but Kobe scored 12 more points than MJ in 42 minutes...no overtimes neccessary. 81 points dude. 2nd most in NBA HISTORY. To say it "ain't shit" just cause the Raptors are a bad team is just plain stupid.

when your teammates are shooting 33% and losing by 18 at HOME to the fucking RAPTORS, and you develop a hot hand - doesnt it make sense for your teammates to keep feeding you the ball? especially if your shots keep falling, and the lead keeps getting smaller?

its not as if he did this to the detriment of his teammates. they were sucking.

WHY WOULD YOU NOT PASS TO A PLAYER WHO IS SHOOTING NEARLY DOUBLE THE PERCENTAGE OF EVERYONE ELSE? And then the fact he was still able to continue that tip with the defense really centered on him, its incredible. It was literally 'you cant stop me', seriously.

In response to Reply # 271

He doesn't put them in a position to succeed. He's practically the PG in that version of Basketball offense. In the Triangle he is supposed to create.

He does create- only for himself.

If he doesn't get them scoring passes that means he's leaving shots for them that aren't exactly high percentage shots: Contested threes, and layups in traffic.

Watch a real player like Heinrich, or Brevin Knight or Tim Duncan and watch how they pass the ball.

In response to Reply # 288

if anyone but kobe gets the ball without a clear look at the basket, they cant do ANYTHING to get a good look? is that what youre saying?

when youre making shots, you keep taking them... show me a game where kobe went TEN of 46, and youll have a point.

bottom line is that he wouldnt have taken that many shots if they werent going in.

wilt took SIXTY THREE shots when he scored 100... was he ruining their offense?

Because you're so fucking off on this. Let it be known, I'm far from a Kobe fan, but with the League Pass, and my curiousity, I've watched alot of Lakers this year.

HIS TEAM SUCKS.

Chris Mihm sucks.
Kwame Brown sucks.
Devean George sucks.
Smush Parker couldnt make the Pistons roster.
Lamar Odom....is barely average.

Your claim that these guys shoot a low percentage because of Kobe might be the dumbest assesment of NBA basketball I've ever heard. Watch a game. Watch these guys consistently miss "bunnies". Watch these guys turn the ball over time after time. Watch them do nothing but suck. Kobe is a ballhog, yes, but most times, it's with reason.

And some times they need Kobe to get them going, and last night it was the same thing. We are very up and down with the sole consistency coming from Kobe and the coaching staff. When other players are showing signs and come out the gate focused(so not last night, obvious if you saw the first half) Kobe will more often than not get them the ball consistently.

take off the kobe hate for a second.

lots of players in the nba dont pass as much as they should.

lots of players take alot of shots.

they dont score 81 points. they dont hit 60% of their shots.

this was a simply marvellous performance, one of the greatest of all time.

this is MORE impressive than wilt's 100 because kobe shot from further away and isnt a foot taller than everyone else.

I don't think anyone has. Those that have issues with this guy have never said he wasn't a fantastic talent (hell, he might be the greatest talent ever) I still don't know why it's so hard for Laker fans to understand, the guy can be a once in a lifetime talent and a cancer at the same time. One doesn't have to cancel the other out.

And here's the funniest thing about all of this to me. I've heard 3 people ask the same question when told of Kobe's 81. That question? "Did they win" Dude gets eighty-fucking-one points and the outcome of the game is in doubt lol That pretty much sums up your team Laker fans.

I said after the Mav game he might score 70 or 80 this year. Hell, he might even score 100 before it's all said and done. But you people acting like this puts the "Kobe Hate" to rest are just showing us you have never understood the problem in the first place. In that regards, you are just like Kobe. I'm sure Kobe is thinking the same thing. "Man I just dropped 81 points. That should shut em up" You guys (and Kobe)will just never get it. And really, I'm happy you don't.

I read it like this "Nobody can hate on this man"

I didn't see the comma before man until I just read it again. I can agree with that. What Kobe did last night was special. The fact is, he had to score at least 60+ of his team was going to lose. Big picture nothing changed my view on Kobe. But I wasn't trying to take anything away from what he did last night and it's place in history.

I just think that people who are going out of their way to poo poo it because the team may not make the playoffs or argue whether it's going to help the team long term or whether he's a ballhog or not are just missing out. Maybe it's because I watched the shit live, but that shit was unreal. Had it been antoine walker, who can't stand, I would be in just as much awe. I'll save my disdain for another day. that's really all I'm saying. You got Lou making a post questioning whether this is good for the team's long term chances to win a ring. come on dog. It's shit like that that makes people sound absolutely crazy.

In-fuggin-credible!!

For all the other dumb muafuckas who want to hate on Kobe's accomplishment and the stupid Lou arguement of how this will hurt the Lakers as a team in the long run...remember this:

Just one week ago today, heads were AMAZED at how great the Lakers were playing as a TEAM offensively and defensively as they took it to the Heat. Now, y'all wanna say this 81 dropped by KB8 is going to make Mihm & Co. fold the fuck up? C'mon now. This Laker team is inconsistent and erratic. Some nights they'll only need Kobe to score 25-30, some nights they'll need him to drop 50. Just like Jordan's Bulls. People wanna talk that shit, but Scottie Pippen wasn't a perennial 20 point per game scorer. The only time he did it in consecutive seasons was when Jordan retired the first time. So Jordan still had to read those championship teams that people consider great and see if he had to drop 30 or 60 so they would get the W. Kobe is helping the Lakers in the same way.

Of those 81 he dropped, they needed 65-70 of them. After that, then it was record chasing, but who gives a fuck. I just wished I could have watched the game.

HA... for real, the main reason and the only reason people are hatin kobe is simple: scoring 80 in a game does not solve all the teams problems in one night.

"Michael Jackson in 1983" is to "spent hours recording Billie Jean" as
"Michael Jackson in 2003" is to "spent hours in Billy's jeans".- Conan O' Brian.

holy crap. I had at least seven people in class ask me today, 'what you keep smiling about and repeating the numbers eighty one?'. I just shook me head, and kept smiling. I mean, its mind fucking boggling. The last time I can actually remember just smiling all day and still in disbelief was after D Fish's .4. I mean its just you know, you still cant believe what you actually saw.

if AI, lebron, or duncan had done this, there would be UNIVERSAL props. you wouldn't hear this "is this good for the team shit" you'd hear "AI had to, no one else was stepping up" i mean shit half of y'all justified him walking off the court before a game was done; lebron would be credited with "taking the next step to being truly great" and duncan would be "reminding us why he's the best player in the NBA."

for those who try and diminish what mamba did shows how narrow minded and just how stupid your hate can make you.

In response to Reply # 0

'he doesn't make his teammates better' is
erroneous imo. epsecially if folks use
JORDAN to make their case.

jordan had his pippen. kobe does not.
before pip, jordan got the same wrap
kobe gets 'he shoots out, scores a lot,
ball hog, blah blah blah...'

until kobe has a squad comparable to
the one jordan had when he started
making his run, i think its wrong
to use JORDAN as a litmus test.

having watched the lakers several
times this season, i now understand
why kobe shoots so much - his teammates
will either MISS or FUCK UP with the
ball (see: odoms getting a CHARGE
called on him with thirty seconds
left in the game, thereby almost
directly allowing sac back into
the game)

kobe's team is pretty wack to be in
the west, and if i'm kobe, and i have
to score forty a night to give us a
chance to make the playoffs, i'd do it, too.

no team gels and coalesces in a single
season, so i don't buy the idea that he
should pass and lose while his teammates
clang bricks for the sake of team cohesion.
garnett does that, and gets clowned too.

i've not heard any argument dissing
this performace that isn't straight hate <-- bottom line

puts the true feelings of the haters under the microscope...the date of this was prophetic.

http://blogs.foxsports.com/MooreSports/10338

Ignore the Mamba and maybe the Mamba ignores you.
Why can't we embrace this man? Why is Kobe Bryant someone that most of America loves to hate? Why is this man one of the reasons that I "broke up" with my childhood team, the Los Angeles Lakers last month? Why can't we admit he's more like Michael Jordan than anyone else?

Why can't I secretly stop rooting for him to win?

He is slightly detestable. There's the ego that allowed Kobe to refer to himself before the start of this season as "The Mamba". I tried for nearly a week to wrap my mind around the fact that someone, let alone Kobe Bean Bryant, had given themselves the nickname of a African snake. A friend tried to explain to me that a Mamba snake has a bite which causes almost certain death and that Kobe was being analytical. I figured that. I got it. I just didn't get Kobe.

He started out his career trying so hard. Remember that first season, in the playoffs against the Jazz? He had the shaved head, the attitude and the idea. He also had the four air-balls.

He came along nicely, teaming with Shaq for the run of three NBA titles from 2000-2002. We liked him, his shoes, his new age afro, his ability to speak Italian at odd times.

But then 2004 happened. He forced out Shaq, was accused of rape and was thrown under the bus by his coach. He got that monster tattoo, bought his wife that diamond and really changed. He even nearly signed a contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. As laughable as that sounds, most close to the situation say it really did almost happen.

Kobe was someone we didn't even know anymore--but did we know him to begin with?

Better yet, is it our right or our place to "know" him? These athletes aren't our personal property.

But the heart of the matter is this: do an unlikable athlete's accomplishments take an unfair backseat to the accomplishments of players we do like?

Why should we hold Bird or Magic's accomplishment's above Bryant's just because we like them more?

The reason I ask is because it seems like no one's paying attention to the incredible performance being put on by Kobe Bryant. He scored over 45 points in his fourth consecutive game last night in a win over the Pacers. Oh, by the way: he also had ten rebounds, five assists and a steal.

By doing so, he accomplished something that Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Dominique Wilkins or Dr. J never did. Four straight 45-point games hasn't been done since Wilt Chamberlain did it in November of 1964. Heck, during this streak he's averaging 47 points per game. For the season, he's up to a 34 ppg average.

Of the 32 games Kobe's played in (he missed two for suspension last week), he's scored 30 points in 21 of them. As Ron Burgundy would say, "Don't act like you're not impressed."

Kobe had 62 in three quarters against the Dallas Mavericks a few days before Christmas last month and was criticized for not going for more. The game was out of hand, Bryant said, and it would have been showing up the Mavericks, whom he says he respects.

At first, I was a little outraged. Pretty hypocritical I thought. The guy goes through life not caring about anyone but himself and his stats forever, and then takes the fifth when it comes to have the opportunity to take over the Lakers single game scoring record. Then I thought about how he'd really done an injustice to the fans that paid to see him, watched him drop 62, then take the bench. Completely unfair--as an athlete aren't you supposed to go after the records?

But the more I thought about it, and after talking to a friend, I came to this conclusion: what was Kobe supposed to do? He was in a no-win situation. If he drops 80 in a thirty point win, then he's gunning for the record and would be criticized for being what's wrong with professional sports.

If Bryant gets 80 in that Mavs game, he's showing up his opponent, not respecting the game and being the selfish ball hog everyone said he was. So he didn't. And he got ripped for it anyway.

Truth be told, he's giving the fans their money. He's keeping the Lakers high in entertainment value--a big draw in Hollywood. In L.A., you can't just keep giving them the same old, same old treatment. Jack Nicholson wants to be drawn to the game. They've seen the titles in Tinseltown. Now they want something more.

In a lot of ways, Kobe's career is the exact opposite of Michael's. Jordan scored a lot early as his team struggled, became the marketing tool that is Air Jordan and then brought the titles. Kobe's been a champion early, now maybe he wants the scoring and marketing part of it all.

And really, what's wrong with that? Most players--Charles Barkley, Karl Malone and Reggie Miller to name a few--play their whole career without ever winning a championship. Kobe won three by age 24. That's just a little younger than the Beatles were before they broke up.

When sports and pop culture icons accomplish something at a young age, we expect them to do more and to top each previous moment. That's impossible. Some of the best Sports moments in life don't happen to end a career like John Elway, they happen like the Beatles, like Kobe.

It took John Lennon years to deal with that. Paul McCartney too. Maybe Kobe's figuring it all out sooner than they did. At least we paid attention to the Beatles. We're in the midst of greatness this season, but we don't like the guy, so we aren't paying much attention. We're ignoring Kobe Bryant. What is the old saying? You don't realize what you've got until it's gone? In fifteen years, we'll be putting up with more bad shooters, more whining, more drama than we are right now. Someone will go 12-30 on a good night. The stars have always taken 30-40 shots a game when they're The Man. It's just we liked most of them more, so we didn't complain as much.

The bottom line is Kobe doesn't have to appreciate his career or his gifts or value it as much as we want him to. Because, in all fairness, are we appreciating or valuing him and what he's doing right now as much as he wants us to?

319. "WHAT OTHERS IN THE NBA ARE SAYING ABOUT KOBE (Must read):"
In response to Reply # 0

I copied this from Lakersground.net, so here it is...some things are funny, some are obvious jabs at Kobe, all are in awe of what he did last night:

Celtics Great Larry Bird:
"That's wild. That is really wild. That's a lot of points, I'm telling you. There's no question how good he is, but when you start throwing numbers around like that, it's unbelievable. It would be hard to believe if you didn't know it was true."

Miami Heat Coach Pat Riley:
"Anybody who's got the kind of energy to try to hoist up (nearly) 70 shots is going to score a lot of point. It's remarkable, the execution and the efficiency, but we've got a lot of guys in this league, if they took 70 shots, they'd score a lot of points."

Miami Heat G, Dwyane Wade:
"Everybody was calling. Everybody called every player in the league."

Miami Heat F, Antoine Walker:
"I think with the 81 now, no other team or other players will let that happen. Now guys will foul out trying to stop him from doing that. If someone gets 81 on me, I'm going to clothesline him." On Shaq: "He told us to get him 50 shots."

Tex Winter, Ex-Assistant:
"It was quite an exhibition. It's what the fans love. I don't think you can win a championship playing that way and so, consequently, I would be concerned about that. But it was a great victory and I don't want to take anything away from Kobe because it was one of the greatest I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of exhibitions."

Lakers Great, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar:
"Kobe's range is unreal, and he does it his way. It was a real treat. His ability to shoot from long range and also attack the hoop, split the defense and get in close for opportunities near the basket is unique. He's made a niche for himself, and he deserves it."

New Jersey Nets PG, Jason Kidd:
"How many minutes did he play, 42? If he had an overtime game, maybe (100 would be possible)"

New Jersey Nets F, Vince Carter:
"It is great for the league, for him, just because of the buzz it has created. The only bad thing about it is younger kids, whose minds are easily warped, are going to think, 'Ohhh! I am going to go out there and do it' instead of the team concept first. That is what is missing, guys understanding how to play as a team. They want scoring, they want ratings, you are going to get that. You are definitely going to get them now with the amount of 50-60-point games . . . I just hope kids and young guys understand that yeah, special guys can do that. But . . ."

Detroit PG, Chauncey Billups:
"If you have it going, you're supposed to keep it going. ... Unbelievable."

Indiana Pacers Coach, Rick Carlisle:
"I don't feel so bad about the 45 he got on us now."

Golden State Warriors Coach, Mike Montgomery:
"I wish we had King Kong (to guard him). Anything we can do, we'll do."

Bulls Great Scottie Pippen:
"It's superb, definitely. Something that is new to me, that is shocking. I got the news last night about 3 in the morning, and I don't think I even went back to bed."

Ex-Bull and now-Analyst Steve Kerr:
"I'm always one to credit the guys who win. I don't know if I would have given Kobe the M.V.P. last week. But what he did in the game last night, he's so clearly the best player out there."

Hubie Brown, Analyst:
"For Kobe Bryant to do this as a guard, it is a testimony to his athletic ability, incredible endurance."

Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations, Joe Dumars:
"I think it is an awesome feat what Kobe did the other night, and I tip my hat to him. The one word that comes to mind when I think about what he accomplished is SPECIAL."

Utah Jazz Coach, Jerry Sloan:
"Kobe brought his team back from a big deficit to win the game, so you like to see that. That means quite a bit more than getting points with no competition."

Cavs Guard, Eric Snow:
"Hats off, he's the best. It's hard to get 50 in a game. He did it in a half. It takes a tough player who works really hard. I think he's one of the best ever."

Celtics Ricky Davis:
"That was a great game. It surprises you, but the guy was hitting shot after shot."

Celtics Forward, Paul Pierce:
"It's impressive,. He's probably playing the best basketball of anyone in the NBA right now. When you’re taking jump shots, you’re going to get more tired. Wilt got all layups. With the athletes that are in the game today, no, it wouldn’t happen. You would have to put more minutes on the clock. Well, maybe Kobe could do it. If he shot every time down the floor.” "

Celtics Coach, Doc Rivers:
“What was lost in all of that was that he got it going when they were down by 18 points. The other amazing part was that he didn’t get tired at the end.”

George Gervin:
"To compare it to anybody would be useless. He set himself apart from everyone else. Everyone looks for another Michael Jordan, and there probably won't be one. What Kobe did was establish himself as one of the greatest scorers of all time at an early age. He's a phenom. I'm a believer, man. Now we've got to sit back and wait and see if anyone scores 82."

76ers Guard, Andre Iguodala:
"How does the other team let him get that many points? Once a guy gets 50 points, you double him every time down the court. They weren't doing a good job of trying to keep the ball out of his hands so I was actually rooting for him.

Miami Heat Center Shaquille O'Neal:
Declined to comment..

Elgin Baylor:
"Scoring 81 points is a truly amazing accomplishment. Of course, the most important thing is that his effort contributed to a victory for his team."

Mavs GM, Mark Cuban:
"It's amazing. Beyond amazing. He's on another level from any other player at this point. It's like he is toying with teams. If you push up on him, he just takes two steps back and shoots from further out. I hope the NBA adjusts its TV schedule so we all can see him play more. It would be fun to watch and fun to debate how far a one-man show can drag four other players in a team sport."

Ex-Lakers Guard, Ty Lue:
Listen to Lue interview

Atlanta Hawks Captain, Joe Johnson:
"With Kobe, he takes shots that look bad, but they're not bad shots for him. He was on fire. On fire."

Atlanta Hawks Coach, Mike Woodson:
"It was just a special, special night. And I'm sure Kobe felt that way. Because 81 points is, well, 81 points, and I don't care how you cut it up. It's amazing."

Atlanta Hawks Radio Analyst, Dennis Scott:
"The most points I ever scored was 65 in the Urban Coalition summer league in D.C.. I had something like 16 3-pointers, and I'm telling you, I was dead tired when it was over. I saw the highlights of Kobe, and he looked like he could have played another game."

Orlando Magic Guard, Keyon Dooling:
"It's not just a buzz about Kobe, it's a holler. That guy is incredible. That's why he's the best player in the league."

Orlando Magic Assistant GM, Otis Smith:
"Whether you like him or dislike him, Kobe is a special player. He has the killer instinct in him that a lot of the talented players don't have. When he smells blood, he goes for the jugular. That's a (Michael) Jordan-like quality."

Orlando Guard/Forward, Grant Hill:
"I guess they say records are made to be broken. You wouldn't think it could be done, but if anybody could I guess it would be Kobe. It's just incredible. There's not much really you can say. Wow."

Orlando Coach, Brian Hill:
"Forget about 81 points. To be able to get up that many shots and still play defense at the other end of the floor, that's a pretty incredible physical accomplishment."

Hornets Guard Kirk Snyder:
"I heard about it after I had finished hanging out with David West, and he called me and said that Kobe had scored 81. My first thought was is that I'm in the NBA with probably one of the best players ever to play in the NBA."

Hornets Coach Byron Scott:
"I think Wilt's record is pretty safe unless a player like Kobe goes into four or five overtimes. I think this is the closest you'll see anybody get to it."

Hornets Guard J.R. Smith:
"The first thing that came to my mind when I heard about what Kobe did was the amount of shots he go. If anybody's going to score, it's Kobe. He can take as many shots as he wants, and nobody says nothing. Of course when you take 46 shots you are going to score, but he's good enough to make more than half of them. He's good enough to take good shots, and he just had one of those nights."

Jerry West:
"I don't know if anyone could have stopped him last night. It's so senseless to me to say he shouldn't take over like that. You give the same amount of shots to everybody else and they're not making that many, I know it. Players are jealous of greatness. Kobe is a unique talent and a unique person. His belief that he can jump to the moon is never going to change. But I admire him, what he's been able to overcome. You would think he would be a fair-haired man of the NBA with what's he's already done. But he's taken a fairly good battering."

Didn't Shaq and Kobe make up? Is Pat Riley joining in on the now-squashed beef for some reason?
