"Maurice Clarret and Ohio State Pt. 12 (Miami Edition)"
Mon Jan-06-03 02:09 AM by KayDee

Now usually I like to save these posts for after a game but this is different. I am predicting an Ohio State win against Miami in the Feista bowl. And I want all of you to see this early...approximatly a month before the game.

Now I will admit....prior to Staurday's VA. Tech game...I had afew doubts about our chances of winning this game. I was caught up in the media hype surrounding Miami. Not anymore. (What are you crazy. Oddysey did you see the same game I saw?!?!?!? Fall back Okayplayers...here me out.)

Miami gave up 45 points!!!!!! yes they scored 56 and they won too. And Their offense looked good. But here are several keen observations I made. Miami's QB, Ken Dorsey, really aint that good. He fucked up several wide open TD passes. And Miami's Defense sucked.

McGahee...he's good, but I dont think he's better than Larry Johnson and Johnson didn't run wild on us (16 Rushes 66 yds 4.1 ypr 1 TD). And no way McGahee gets 6 TDs or 175 plus yards rushing on us. Wont happen. Clarett I predict will have a field day on Miami as will Maurice Hall and Lydell Ross. I see 225 plus yds on the ground from our backs...and a solid defensive effort from our d (thats basic OSU football).

Another observation that I have made is that Miami has not played anyone all year. They have played 5 ranked teams and none finished higher than 13 (West Virginia) in the end. Ohio State however, yes we have struggled with some lesser teams as well as struggled on the road. But we also played without Clarett in many of those games, yet still proved that we can come from behind and win (Michigan). And yes Ohio State only played 4 ranked teams, but one was Washington State who we beat 25-7 and they are headed to the rose bowl after winning the Pac 10 Title. Another was Michigan who is 1. our biggest rival and 2. a top 15 team. Dont forget about Penn State either...they finished at number 10. I can go on all day with stats and all that...but i wont. No need to. You guys can debate it out (Theres no debate with me.)

Bottom Line....Final score: OSU 27 Miami 21. (yes...this will be Miami's lowest scoring game of the season.)

just to clear things up.

1)OSU's running game vs Miami's run defense
Only way OSU will win.

2) OSU's defense vs Miami's offense
OSU has not seen ANYTHING like Miami. NOTHING!!!! How OSU holds up on defense will determine the outcome as well. OSU may just spread themselves thin trying to cover all of Miami's weapons(Dorsey, Winslow, McGahee, etc.). If they do not get containment with their front seven, it's over for the Buckeyes. Miami, and we all know this, can beat you thru the air and thru the ground. How OSU controls the line of scrimmage from the the defensive side of the ball is key. That, and if they luck out in getting an unmotivated Canes team.

OSU does need to control the line of scrimage which I believ they will. When have they not?

Also, I think people are givin Miami too much credit and OSU not enough. Miami hasnt provven anything to me. YEs they are undefeated but they really havent played anyone this year either.

1) Miami's the defending champs. Eliminate the hype and expectations, you still have a sound and well talented/disciplined team.

2)If you say Miami hasn't played anybody, be prepared to look at Ohio State's schedule as well. The Buckeyes played the following bowl bound teams: WashSt, Cincy, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Purdue, Michigan, and Penn State = 7, 5 from their conference. Miami played: Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Boston College, and Virginia Tech = 7(same as Ohio State), 3 NOT from their conference. it's preety even right there, with Miami playing a harder NON-conference schedule in comparison to ohio state, but the Buckeyes had a tougher conference on the other hand.

Where they even ranked high when Miami played them?

Bowl bound holds no weight. We talkin too undefeated teams here. How many top teams has miami played?

They are defending champs and I respect that, but I just dont think they are as good as advertised.

I rest that argument.

I for one am glad that a team I FUCKING HATE is playing Miami. That said, this will be a good game. Yall got a shot, but don't fool yourself into thinking you're going to move the football against the canes consistently. Look at how many points V-Tech put up via special teams. Moreover, good luck stopping the Canes on offense. The Buckeyes haven't played a team like this all year. Don't give that bullshit about how great your defense is, because it isn't. Tressel is a great coach and I'm sure he'll come up with a good game plan, but the Buckeyes are going to have to outscore the Canes, plain and simple

Aint gonna happen. Canes 31-20.

but Miami hasnt played anyone all year either.

We have at least proven that we can beat top teams. Miami hasnt. Now I aint sayin they arent good or not capable, but I dont think Miami is as good as everyone makes them out to be.

And by the way...45 points is tsill 45 points. We have scored points on Defense. So I ant really sweatin that.

You gotta see past "The Hype" that comes along with Miami. Every team has flaws, Miami is one of them. It just depends on whether or not you have the weaponry and ammunition, to destroy their armor.

Besides.....Cincy, Minnesota, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Texas Tech(I forgot about them) were not ranked when OSU played them.

In the end, thass why we play the games.

As I said before, the things you keep bringing up are just about equally balanced between the two as far who has played who. I never said that Ohio State HASN'T played anybody, I'm saying that Miami has played top teams as well.

Are you really discounting the fact that Miami has won 34 in a row, and should have had 3 straight undefeated seasons except for a hiccup at Washington 2+ years ago??? They should have played Oklahoma two years ago for the title, but got screwed by the Bull Crap Series.

SO, if the college football system really worked, Miami would be going for 3 in a row, instead of 2.

Not that any of that means anything for this game, just a point i am trying to make.

Long story short, if you remember correctly, last year everyone was saying, "Hey, Nebraska has a chance, they played a much tougher schedule, blah, blah, blah..." Fact is, Miami is a better team, top to bottom. Clarett is damaged goods. And, although Dorsey doesn't deserve the Heisman, he is the best game-management QB in college football. He makes few mistakes, and has an O-Line that doesn't give up sacks.

Sorry to say, but Ohio State has little if any change at a victory. Miami has been quieting all the haters and doubters for 3 years. They will do it again this year.

Larry Coker has kept the so-called "Miami Swagger" in check for the last 2 years. That to which you refer is for the most part in the past. You have a few guys who celebrate after a routine tackle, talk trash, etc. But who doesn't? (see: NFL)

...because again, they have won 34 straight. They may play TO their opponents, but they play within themselves.

I think the best thing that could have happened to Miami is that horrible call where Payton "threw" the halfback pass to Dorsey. If anything, it humbled them, and it will be fresh in their minds that they need to play smart football.

Florida State, Miami, and Washington all finished 10-1.

Florida State was ranked the highest by the BCS, so they rightfully went to the NC game.

If you argue Miami should have gone to the NC because they beat FSU, regardless of rankings, well, Washington beat Miami so they should have gone instead.

There was absolutely no good reason to put Miami in the NC game that year.

i started to make a big ass shit talkin post about how o-state was gonna beat miami but i guess i'll do it here. and the reason why i whitnk the bucks can/will beat 'em is because we do have the ammunition to exploit miami's weakness. and his name is maurice "da beast" clarrett. and whoever said that this kid is damaged goods is crazy, he was at 80-90% in the michigan game and with about 6 weeks rest, he'll be 110% when he gashes miami's defense for 150+ yards. now i hear everyone talkin about miami's speed on defense but let me tell you somethin, SPEED DONT MEAN SHIT WHEN U GETTIN SMASHED IN THE MOUTH BETWEEN DA TACKLES! plain and simple, teams that had the ability to hit miami in the mouth by runnin between the tackles have hurt them this season and unless they decide to put up 8-9 man fronts, which they havent done all year, this game will be no different. and dont forget that we have an incredible recieving corps and as i've been sayin it before krenzel has shown the ability to make plays down the field. and i also have the feelin that one of them cocky ass miami players will say somethin stupid in the next comming weeks. it s just a matter of time and the buckeyes will have that much more motivation to bitch slap the shit out of the canes come jan.

However Miami is a better team, period.

This is a real game, but I will not talk with confidence this time around. I am merely proud of what we proved this season WE ARE THE NUMBER 2 TEAM IN THE NATION BOTTOM LINE with a chance at winning the national championship. As we have been saying on the boards all season this team is still in development. We are a young team and most key elements are returning next season.
Just wait till next season!!

we can win it now! we're just the right team to upset them too. im tellin you, we'll control the clock with the ground game and when they play the run it'll open up the deep ball down the field. this is one of those games where our offense will be our best defense because our running attack should be able to keep miami's offense of the field so dont expect this game to be a shootout here. but i think the main thing we need to do on defense is get as much pressure on ken dorsey as possible. and i dont even mean that we need to sack him either because he's the type of qb that is unable to make plays outside the pocket. if we can get him scrambling and watchin the rush instead of downfield we should have at least a couple of ints this game. im tellin you man WE CAN DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!

you keep talking about miami's "horrible" run D and how clarett is going to run all over them and then how osu can stop UM's offense, especially McGahee very easily
peep this:
Miami's "terrible" run d gave up shit in yardage to VT's rb's who equally as talented as clarett, combined they had like 20+ carries for 60yds...most of the rushing yds given up by UM as of late have been to running qb's and teams that run the spread O all the time...OSU doesn't run the spread much and certainly doesn't have a rushing qb like a majority of the teams we played..and then throw in UM's #1 ranked pass d into the mix, and if you guys think you have seen team speed like UM, forget about it...the ny giants director of scouting said no team in the NFL has the team speed of UM!
then with miami's offense, how in the hell do you expect to stop us?...vt only gives up around 60yds a game rushing and mcgahee had his way with them...now if osu puts 8 or 9 in the box, miami play actions and parrish and johnson are wide open, your pass defense has been exploited many times this year, mostly by qb/wr's inferior to that of UM's
now i'm not saying osu can't win, but let's get real, it would be a MAJOR upset...the line isn't as high as it is for no reason...osu has the #43 ranked scoring O and the #67 ranked O for total yds...miami is top 5 in both
osu is ranked #88 in pass defense, so how do you think they will be able to stop miami's passing attack?...although their rush defense is quite strong i must say
should be a good game
miami 34 OSU 20

This reminds me exactly of the 2000 national championship.

Remember all those "experts" who said Florida State would destroy Oklahoma? FSU had dismantled Clemson and Florida, two good teams that year, by a combined 80-20 (ish) score to end the year. Analysts went on and on how FSU is so fast and OU couldn't match up with their speed. This is the Seminole team that had Heisman winner Weinke, a stacked WR corp even w/o Snoop Minnis and Lombardi winner Jamal Reynolds.

All OU had done that year was beat a bunch of top ten teams, but their offense looked shaky at the end and survived several close calls to Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and Kansas State. People were starting to doubt, calling them more lucky than good. No way this team survives a FSU team clicking on all cylinders.

Well, the Orange Bowl ended up with OU dancing at midfield and the mighty Noles shut out on offense.

Same scenario this year. Ohio State gets dissed by many so-called experts (Trev Alberts should jump off the ESPN building NOW) but remember: they did go UNDEFEATED. The Buckeyes have the talent to hang with Miami. You think Mike Doss, Will Smith, Matt Wilhelm, Chris Gamble, Michael Jenkins, and Maurice Clarett are THAT MUCH SLOWER THAN MIAMI? Get the fuck outta here. If Pitt can deal with Miami's speed, a team full of future NFLers certainly can.

I'm not saying OSU will win, or Miami isn't good. But the same thing happened in 2000, how soon mofo's forget. But this ain't the Rose Bowl all over again for Miami - this OSU team is leaps and bounds better than a one-dimensional Huskers team that was playing with no confidence. And last year's Canes team was superior to this version.

52-10 my ass.

First things first, Fuck Ohio State.

Second, Miami hasn't stopped the run as well this year as you might think. They gave up 100 yard games against VT, Syracuse, Pitt, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Florida State. Dude from WV had 175 and Greg Jones had 189.

With that said, I still think Miami will outscore Ohio State. And finally, Fuck Ohio State!

Pipe down hater. I think we saw that neither team was really able to run the ball well last night, but that is beside the point. the fact is that OSU's defense did not fall vitim to the big play. , which has bailed miami out time and time again. Also, OSU's pass defense does not rank so high due to the defense that they play. All year they gave up the middle of the field, tight ends and slant routes killed them all year, but nothing real deep.

I hope not, cuz that motherfucker was carrying Shockey's bags last season and has no right to pop shit.

Miami players will always pop shit, that's how Florida players are. OSU can either rise above that or go down to their level.

Nah, there was that 6 year period when everyone got their shots in.

>...think about
>how many students osu has, and then look at tiny UM with
>under 10k students INCLUDING GRAD SCHOOL...

Cry me a damn river. Like the students are the only ones who can go to games?

And the school site says 15k.

>factor in the
>fact that there is actually a ton of stuff to do in miami,
>unlike freakin columbus, and there ya go why the OB has
>trouble selling out every game...

That's horseshit. Miami is so hoppin' that their so-called fans can't fill up the place 6 times a year? It's warm the whole damn year, so there's plenty of time to get fat on the beach.

>i'll take natl
>championships and W's over selling out a stadium, big fuckin
>deal

That's the sad part...the city is blessed with some of the greatest college teams ever, and they can't even get a full house most Saturdays. That's cool though, I guess no one really cares about sports that much in Miami - I see the same shit go on with the Dolphins. But don't pretend like Miami ain't the king of front-running fans...

Yea, but remember they were on probation and had very little if any scholorships (sp?). Once they came off of probation, they were back on top. Thanks Butch.

Yeah, that's fine and dandy considering you are in the most talent-rich area known to man, but the probation was still Miami's fault.

When effin' EAST CAROLINA comes into the Orange Bowl and puts a 24 point beatin' on ya, it means EVERYONE got their shot in.

miami IS NOT underestimating the OSU team, the fans might be, but the team certainly isn't, they are one of the best prepared teams around when they have a month to get ready for a team, and i'm sure osu will be ready to play also, cuz they have a great coach(cooper was a douchebag)...however, I just don't think that osu can hang with miami, plain and simple, that is MY opinion, that in no way reflects the teams focus or view of osu...miami's lockerroom after the vt game was no more loud or crazy than after beating uconn or famu(ie there wasn't a whole lot going on)...you best believe UM will be more than prepared and focused for this game..."big time players step up in big games" - santana moss

check out dorsey's overrated-ness

4th Quarter Passing - Ken Dorsey

Career Totals (Regular Season Only)
87 of 148 (58.7%) for 1,433 yards, 12 touchdowns, 1 interception

Bowl Games
13 of 18 (72.2%) for 149 yards, 1 touchdown, 0 interceptions

2002 *9 games (did not play 4th qtr. in FAMU, UCONN & Syracuse games)
28 of 41 (68.2%) for 617 yards, 8 touchdowns, 0 interceptions

3rd Down Passing - Ken Dorsey

Career Totals (Regular Season Only)
185 of 305 (60.6%) for 2,195 yards, 133 first downs, 24 touchdowns, 1 interception
*133 of 305 attempts (43.6%) have resulted in first downs

Bowl Games

58 of 95 (61.0%) for 675 yards, 40 first downs, 10 touchdowns, 1 interception
*40 of 95 (42.1%) of third-down passes have resulted in first downs

clarett won't get 100 on miami's D...OSU can only DREAM of stopping miami's passing game...a)dorsey is hard to get to, and your d line isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread on pass coverage, and b)you can't match up with our receivers...johnson has the highest ypc avg. in the nation at over 30yds per catch...and watch out for #1, roscoe parrish, the quickest most fun player to watch since santana moss, and ain't no one recruit him outta hs, he will take it to the house at least once on jan. 3rd
and then our "HORRIBLE" run d that everyone runs on, except for the latter part of the season, where we stopped every running back(the running qb is another story) in his tracks...including the untouchables from vt who had like 60 yds on 30 carries combined...and all this without 9 men in the box...y'all are scurred but too afraid to admit it!

Honest to goodness, Clarett prefers to tell the truth
Tuesday, December 17, 2002
Bob Hunter
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

TERRY GILLIAM | ASSOCIATED PRESS
Speaking with the media is not one of the aspects of college football that Maurice Clarett enjoys.

You know what I like about Maurice Clarett?

He tells the truth.

This probably doesn't mean squat to most football fans; as long as a guy can gobble up 5 or 6 yards a pop, they don't care if he's the second coming of Pinocchio. But to somebody who makes a living being lied to, this means a lot.

In a world where athletes and coaches are so used to telling harmless fibs to the media that many of them can no longer tell the difference, Clarett is a rare gift.

Yesterday, Clarett was a hit at Ohio State's Fiesta Bowl media day. I've already told you why.

"I'm real straightforward,'' Clarett said. "I just don't like a lot of the BS. I'm only doing this today because (OSU sports information director) Steve Snapp asked me to. If it were up to me, I wouldn't be here.''

You'd probably think reporters would hate a guy who tells them how much he doesn't like to talk to them, but that's not the case at all. Reporters love this guy because he doesn't try to dazzle with more of the "BS'' he finds so offensive.

Clarett doesn't fill your notebook with cliches. He doesn't pretend he's answering questions when he knows he's not saying anything. If he doesn't want to answer a question, he says so.

Other guys talk about how much they respect Miami, which would mean something if they hadn't said the same thing about San Jose State. Clarett's analysis is a little more, well, honest.

"I wanted to go to Miami, I'm not going to lie,'' Clarett said. "Ask coach Tressel. I wanted to go to Miami, but I was too scared to fly. It's funny. Willis McGahee wanted to come here (from Florida), but he didn't leave because of his mother. But I think that's a special place. I wanted to go. I can't knock them.''

He softened this eventually, admitting he never visited Miami so he can't be "sure'' he would have gone there. And besides, he wanted to play in Ohio so his mother could see him. But the fact is, Clarett was talking to reporters just as he would his friends or teammates.

"I just want to go out there and play,'' Clarett said. "(Playing) is what's important for me. It's not seeing who can have the most articles or seeing how many magazine covers you can go on. I just like to play the game. That other stuff doesn't matter to me.''

Some guys would say this and the 'Yeah, right' would flash through your mind before they finished the sentence. But because Clarett is so frank, it makes everything he says more meaningful, even when he says something that sounds dangerously like a cliche.

Clarett doesn't like "BS,'' which, as he defines it, encompasses a large part of college football not on the playing field. He encountered this on a grand scale early this season when he told a national magazine he might consider turning pro after his freshman year if he had a chance, and it became a huge issue.

Clarett was crucified for saying what most athletes think, but would never admit in public. Shame on them, not on him.

"I just feel like it's cool to play football, but it should be left at that,'' Clarett said. "It kind of gets on your nerves. People are kissing your butt all year and then like overnight . . . I always think back to Steve Bellisari. People were pretty much kissing his butt all year when he made great plays, and as soon as he made a mistake it was like . . . 'We don't like you' and 'Nah, nah, nah.' ''

If you can't admire Clarett for his candor, you deserve to be constantly fed that "Miami is a fine team'' drivel until you starve to death. If it makes you uncomfortable, maybe it's because he can spot a fraud a mile away. He knows a lot of his fans wouldn't even talk to him if he weren't a football star.

"How do I deal with it?'' Clarett said. "I just stay to myself. Stay around people I know who really like me for me, the same people I've been around.''

Some of this comes from his tough background. Some of it might even be a little misleading.

"He's got a lot of street smarts,'' OSU running backs coach Tim Spencer said. "He's been around a lot of guys and he's seen a lot. But Maurice is a great kid. He says he's hard to get along with, but I don't think he is. I think it takes him a while to sort of feel like you're what you are, you're a good person and what have you. And once he feels that, he's like any other kid.''

Well, not quite. Even when he doesn't answer a question, his honesty sets him apart. When somebody gets too personal, when somebody crosses the line, he breaks into that million-dollar smile of his and tells them to their face:

"Why would I tell you that?''

And in most cases, it's a reasonable question. Why would he tell us that?

"I just don't like the BS,'' he said. "I like to win, plain and simple. I don't care who gets more yards or who gets more catches or who gets more touchdowns. I just care about winning.''

If you haven't grasped it by now, here's a clue: It's not a cliche.

OSU takes wait-'n-see approach
Buckeyes refrain from verbal sparring
Tuesday, December 17, 2002
Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

A heavyweight boxing contender is expected to talk the talk before a big fight, and in that respect, the Ohio State football team failed yesterday.

Oh, the Buckeyes have the credentials (13-0), the confidence, and -- they believe -- the punch to get the job done against reigning champion Miami in the Fiesta Bowl national championship game Jan. 3. But yesterday, in their first foray before the national media assigned to cover the main event, they kept any grandiose thoughts they might have about victory to themselves.

If a few Miami players have spoken rather confidently about their team's chances, well, that's their earned right, OSU junior tackle Shane Olivea said.

"It's interesting, but they can say that because they are the top dogs,'' Olivea said. "So until someone knocks them off, I guess they have the right to say what they want.''

He said he knows many folks are looking at the Buckeyes as " 'They're not supposed to be here; they're supposed to show up on the third, then get on the plane and come home.' But we didn't get here by surprise, and that's why we play the game. We'll see what happens on Jan. 3.''

In the meantime, the Buckeyes have an intense week of practice to finish before breaking for Christmas on Friday. The next few days and weeks, the seniors on the team said they want to make sure the underclassmen understand this is an opportunity to be seized.

"Don't get caught up in just being happy to be in the game, but to actually get guys riled up, and getting guys together to put a game plan together to win,'' senior linebacker Cie Grant said.

One of those underclassmen is sophomore cornerback Dustin Fox, who said, the coaches and players have done a good job the last few weeks of going about business as usual -- even though playing in a national championship game is anything but usual.

"Sure it will sink in once we get out there,'' Fox said. "But right now it seems like we're playing just a regular bowl game, because I've only been here for a year and I don't know the difference, maybe. But I'm sure it will be irregular when we get out there.

"But so far everything has been pretty much the same. The coaches haven't tried to over-hype it or anything like that because that wouldn't be good. They're just trying to get us prepared.''

Yet Olivea said there is a subliminal sense of urgency.

"Our guys are working hard and getting ready for the season because this is our season -- it's one and done; that's how we're looking at it,'' Olivea said. "We're going to be ready to play. We're going to need the best effort from our offensive line, especially going against their defense. We know it's going to be the best defense we've seen all year.

"But going against our defense will definitely help us out because they are very fast. They have a lot of the same team speed our guys have.''

Maybe, but they don't brag about it the way the Hurricanes do. The truth is, though, Miami has earned the right to do a little crowing It has the championship belt.

"Exactly,'' Olivea said. "So until we take that away from them, we really can't say too much. But I do know that everyone is going to be ready, and everybody wants to put their best foot forward and play their best game of the season. And I know we will.''

Ohio State not getting very many ringing endorsements
Wednesday, December 18, 2002
Rob Oller
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Adam, the 22-year-old shoe store manager from Seattle, has never heard of Woody Hayes.

Same goes for Jim, a 58-year-old tire store manager from Bangor, Maine.

Amazing? Not really. As much as we in Columbus like to think of ourselves as the center of the college football universe, the reality is Ohio State needs to win a national championship to capture the attention of the nation.

The Buckeyes haven't wowed the western world since they last won the national title in 1968. They haven't played for the No. 1 ranking since 1979, a year before Adam the shoe salesman was born. Fair or not, annual appearances in the Outback Bowl don't cause dentists in Denver and mechanics in Memphis to bone up on the Buckeyes.

With that in mind, we decided to place random calls around the country to learn what America thinks of Ohio State. We're tired of what Trev Alberts has to say about the Hurricanes putting a holiday hurt on Santa Tressel and his overgrown elves. What does the waitress in Wyoming think? And how does the accountant in Alabama figure the 'Canes to be a double-digit favorite?

The phone is ringing . . . in Seattle.

"Hi, this is Adam.''

"Yes, I'm a sports reporter at The Columbus Dispatch in Ohio . . . what comes to mind when I say, 'Ohio State football?'

"I just remember Eddie George, because he's my favorite player.''

"Ever heard of Woody Hayes?''

"Name rings a bell, but not really.''

"Do the Buckeyes have a chance against Miami?''

"Sure, why not? In college football every game's a tossup because every senior has something to prove.''

The phone is ringing . . . in Bangor, Maine.

"Bangor Tire, Jim speaking.''

"I'm from Columbus, Ohio, writing a column on Ohio State football . . .''

"I don't know anything about Ohio State (including Woody Hayes). Talk to my service manager, Craig.'' (call transfer)

"Hey, Craig, did you know Ohio State was playing for the national championship?''

"I knew Miami was playing somebody.''

"Does it surprise you that Ohio State has not won a national title since 1968?''

"Yes, it does. They must have been in a lot of national championship games, though. Hey, we're from New England. We're used to chokers, too.''

Ouch. The phone is ringing . . . in Stone Mountain, Ga.

"Stone Mountain Chevrolet, this is Will.''

"What comes to mind when I mention Ohio State football?

"No competition. I'm a Florida fan.''

"When did Ohio State win its last national title?

"I didn't know they'd won one.''

Time to dial up Larry, who manages a men's clothing store in Dallas . . .

"What image comes to mind when I mention Ohio State?''

"Smash-mouth, 3 yards at a clip football. I don't think they have much of an offense, to tell you the truth.''

"Do you ever find yourself rooting for the Buckeyes in Big D?''

"I'm from Iowa originally, so I've always been a Hawkeyes fan. Ohio State is about like the Chicago Cubs in baseball.''

Apparently, everyone is a comedian.

Off to Helena, Mont. (where folks usually make a lot more sense) . . .

"Montana RV Center.''

"Do you know anything about Ohio State football?''

"Sure do. They've always been my favorite team. I guess my family was from back around Columbus. The Buckeyes are one of the best.''

Next up, Doak, the financial adviser from San Diego . . .

"Ohio State? I think of the Horseshoe and the colors. No one else has those colors in sports. I'm rooting for the Buckeyes because I hate Miami.''

Let's try Pete, who owns a baseball card shop in Tempe, Ariz., site of the Fiesta Bowl.

"You think Ohio State has a chance against Miami?''

"Just a minute (yells across the room). Well, personally, I think you do, but there are two guys here shaking their heads, and not up and down. These guys think it's going to be a blowout. Sorry, Ohio State fan.''

On to Trey, the Banana Republic sales associate in St. Louis . . .

"Aren't they the Buckeyes? Oops, that's Iowa, right?''

And finally, Fernando, the sports store manager in midtown Manhattan . . .

"We have some Ohio State hats, that's all I know.''

"Do they have a red block 'O' on the front?''

"That's right.''

"That's Woody.''

"Who?''

Wake up, America. The Buckeyes are finally banging on the door again.

In response to Reply # 0

Groom's career booms in end
Thursday, December 19, 2002
Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

NEAL C. LAURON | DISPATCH

Andy Groom finished fourth in the nation in punting average this season.

There's only one thing an athlete should expect from his peers and coaches: a fair chance. And there is only one thing the athlete should demand from himself: make the most of that chance.

For Ohio State punter Andy Groom, the chance to show what he could do in college didn't come until Jim Tressel replaced John Cooper as coach in 2001. The proof that Groom took advantage of his opportunity is going to be framed.

After leading the Big Ten and finishing fourth in the nation with a 44.6-yard average, the OSU senior was named to the Football Writers Association All-American team. That means his picture will be hung in the Hall of Champions of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center along with the 159 other so-honored Buckeyes players, including safety Mike Doss, linebacker Matt Wilhlem and kicker Mike Nugent from the Fiesta Bowl-bound squad.

"It really hasn't sunk in right now; I'm going to be on the wall that Archie Griffin is on,'' Groom said. "It's an unbelieveable feeling, and it truly is an honor.''

And unexpected? Not according to Groom's father, Joe.

"I knew he could be an All-American,'' Joe Groom said. "I have a couple of friends who thought the same thing. We knew he could do it if he got the chance. It just didn't look like he was going to get that chance under John Cooper.''

A walk-on from Hartley in 1998, Andy Groom never felt he had the right to demand anything, and he at least rose to the vital role of holder by his sophomore year. But when Dan Stultz, the place-kicker in 2000, also was tabbed to do the punting after highly touted recruit B.J. Sander sprained an ankle in practice, that was Groom's lowest moment. It proved that, despite his superior efforts in practice, he wasn't going to be rewarded with the No. 1 job.

"He told me, 'Dad, they're just not going to give me the chance,' '' Joe Groom said. "I told him, 'You're at the best program in the country. Something is going to happen. You're due for a scholarship next year; that's what they told you. Just wait. Something will happen.' ''

The waiting was hard, Andy Groom said. Being a walk-on, he lived at home with his parents and commuted about an hour each way, which usually made for a 13-hour day by the time classes and practice were done.

"I'd get home at 8 o'clock at night and my parents would be waiting for me with a nice, warm meal,'' he said. "They'd see me very disappointed, and they'd always tell me to keep my head up. But I never really thought I'd get my chance. Coach Tressel gave me that shot.''

Under Tressel's "the best performer plays'' approach, Groom wowed everyone with his performances in the 2001 preseason camp. Then in the season opener against Akron, Groom averaged about 50 yards on two punts, and Sander averaged about 28. The job was Groom's. Oh, and he'd been put on scholarship before the season began.

"When he got that chance, he ran with it,'' Joe Groom said. "Finishing No. 3 in the country last year and No. 4 this year, that's just the icing on the cake. It's beautiful. You couldn't ask for anything more.''

It wasn't just the average. Andy Groom boomed some clutch punts in the run to 13-0 this year. The 74-yarder in the fourth quarter of the 19-14 win at Wisconsin was huge. So were his 59- and 55-yarders in the fourth quarter of the 13-7 win over Penn State the next week.

It was enough to make a father cry, but all Joe Groom did most of the year was smile. The crying came years ago as he videotaped one of his son's early pee-wee games and it became apparent that Andy might be a cut above.

"He runs for five touchdowns in that game, then he punted, and he kicked,'' Joe Groom said. "To see it carrying over to now, and knowing Friday will be his last practice here at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center -- in a way it's going to be really sad.''

But what a way to go out.

"He's on the wall now,'' Joe Groom said. "And every game program that comes out from now on, he's going to be listed as a 2002 All-American with three other guys.

"And, of course, it's not over. I know we can go 14-0. We're going to beat Miami. This team is destined to go 14-0.''

Buckeyes spread cheer

The Buckeyes will appear en masse in the Columbus City Center Mall today from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. They'll mix with fans, sign autographs and pose for pictures, a team spokesman said.

After Friday, the team will not practice again until Dec. 27 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Todd Jones column: Clarett's anger misplaced, but words have ring of truth
Tuesday, December 31, 2002
Todd Jones
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

PHOENIX -- We hate when life interrupts the games we're obsessed with. Our entertainment world doesn't have much room for humanity.

No wonder part of us, the heartless part that sometimes overwhelms our thoughts, wants Maurice Clarett to just shut up and run the ball. Everything is simpler when the athletes are robotic warriors.

The world, of course, is far from simple. So, too, are athletes. Just because they perform physical feats we can only dream about doesn't mean they don't struggle with the same doubts, fears and even grief that we all battle at times.

Clarett's humanity flashed for a few minutes yesterday in the form of an intelligent, impestuous, independent 19-year-old. They were the traits usually hidden by his Ohio State football uniform.

He ripped OSU -- "they jerked me'' -- for not allowing him to leave the Fiesta Bowl practices here and travel to his hometown of Youngstown to attend the funeral of his murdered friend, Juan Bell.

His criticism came wrapped in an impressive display of worldliness for a teen-ager, complete with thoughtful commentary about society's misplaced values and our inability to help the homeless and poor.

"I guess football is more important than a person's life to them, so that's why I'm just ready to get the game over and go back home,'' Clarett said.

Powerful stuff. Coming four days before OSU plays Miami in the national championship game, Clarett's comments caused a media firestorm, and, certainly, has fans in the Buckeye Nation wringing their hands over how it might affect the preparation of him and his teammates.

It's usually not good when the star player is referring to his school as "they'' and "them.''

Clarett's anger was misplaced. OSU coach Jim Tressel and athletic director Andy Geiger explained that their star tailback would have been permitted to leave the team for the funeral had he paid his own way. That financial obligation was necessary because he hadn't filled out the proper paper work before his request, and payment by others would be an NCAA infraction. Rules are rules.

Everything seemed simple to Clarett: he just wanted to go bury his friend, and someone, for some reason, was keeping him from doing so.

In essence, Clarett found himself snared in the kind of bureaucratic web weaved by the NCAA that so often entangles college athletes. He was raging against a machine he didn't comprehend.

It's tempting to dismiss the episode as just the latest in the seasonlong soap opera, The Days of Maurice. He's had enough brush fires around him to suggest a diva's persona and the need for Tressel to don a fire-retardant suit.

Clarett, after all, was smiling and at ease through most of his press conference. His mood soured over an innocuous question, as if it suddenly dawned on him that he was sitting in a sterile hotel ballroom being peppered by unfamiliar reporters at the exact moment his friend was being eulogized thousands of miles away.

Don't question the kid's grief. This is an honest person who wears his heart on his sleeve. He's not always right, but he's not afraid to express what he feels. His mother, Michelle, once proudly said she "raised him to be independent.''

Such independence, of course, flies in the face of team-oriented football, especially at a factory such as Ohio State. Buckeyes are expected to keep their quotes bland, their personal feelings inhibited by team priorities.

So Clarett will be criticized those who see nothing more important on Earth than Friday's game, especially if he doesn't perform well.

Some fans probably already want him tarred and feathered for saying yesterday that "Life is a whole lot more important than football.''

He is, of course, right. Football is simply a game, an entertainment diversion, especially for a poor neighborhood such as the one Clarett grew up in, where houses are riddled by bullet holes and there exists a powerful sense of helplessness and foreboding that we the privileged can't truly understand.

Some people don't want to hear that in the days before Ohio State has a chance to win its first national championship in 34 years.

Clarett, however, isn't going to be who everyone wants him to be, just another brick in the wall. Deal with it.

It is ashame that red tape keeps a person from being at a loved one's funeral, whether it is a family member or not. The NCAA ought to take a good look at what happened here, (though you know they won't) so attending a funeral or family emergency doesn't get bogged down because of a need for the necessary "paperwork".

It is so sad to know that if someone would have lent him the money to fly home, he would more than likely have been penalized or even suspended because that breaks NCAA rules.

Shit, if I had the money, i would have sent it to him. I know what it's like to lose a best friend, and I couldn't imagine not being at his funeral.

as any one of these posts without a contribution from me, just aint complet ....

the game will not be a blowout. im not gonna come up on here predicting anything or guaranteeing shit like i did with michigan. cause i really dont know what will happen. all i know is that this OSU team will not be embarassed. Tressel will not let that happen. but after reading all these posts talking about the different strategies for each team and what not, ill make this very simple....

DUSTIN FOX.

Plain and simple, Fox is the key to this game. any osu fan whose watched every game this season knows that the only time our defense has been lit up (post gamble era) has been when Fox has been picked on. games that come to mind are illinois, purdue and michigan. and im sure there are more. fuck johnson, gamble will take care of him. im assuming fox will be guarding the other receiver (i forget his name). thats your key matchup right there folks. whoever wins that matchup will be walking home with the trophy. clarett will do his thing and keep mcgahee under control (not shut him down, but under control). those two are givens as far as im concerned. if miami keeps the offense on the field by throwing at fox every third down- WE WILL LOSE. if we win that matchup and keep this game close, we will pull out a close one as we've done all year.

and just to correct what someone said earlier....Tressel is already a legend in Ohio. And will be around for the next 20+ years in which he will accomplish PLENTY (just for you, Will).

and odyssey, you may have peeped that article in the dispatch today, discussing potential early exits from some osu players. what do you think....

will smith
darrion scott
michael jenkins

what are the chances of us keeping all of 'em. we really need jenkins here next year....

and regardless of what happens in fridays game, its probably been the greatest season to ever be an ohio state fan....its been incredibly exciting, and next year could be even better.

Stick around or go pro? Three Buckeyes face decision
Thursday, January 2, 2003
Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

TEMPE, Ariz. -- This time of the year, it's natural for talented juniors in college football to have thoughts about going to the NFL. So it is for Ohio State defensive ends Will Smith and Darrion Scott and receiver Michael Jenkins.

"I think it's something every junior thinks about,'' Smith said. "I've thought about it, but it's not something I'm going to make up my mind about until after the Fiesta Bowl when I've had the chance to sit down with my family and discuss it.''

The Buckeyes face Miami on Friday night for the national championship. Smith, Scott and Jenkins say that's paramount on their minds at the moment.

They admit that afterward they will give consideration to an early exit, although none has said he is leaning in that direction.

"I really want to stay, but if the opportunity presents itself, I wouldn't mind taking it, also,'' Scott said.

Jenkins, the team's leading pass catcher, said the same but also noted the high number of receivers who likely will be available for the upcoming draft. Whatever the three decide, they have until the end of next week to declare their intentions.

Safety Mike Doss stepped up to the same microphone last January and, with tears streaming, announced he would return for his final season. If asked for counsel, though, he would offer an almost neutral thought.

"You've got to do what's best for you, and for me, it was coming back,'' Doss said.

Scott, Smith and Jenkins will ask the NFL for guidance on where their stock might be in terms of draft position. That answer, as much as anything, will sway the decision, Scott said.

"You really want to go in the first round or early second,'' Scott said. "Anything later than that, it probably benefits you more to stay in school another year.''

so what are your predictions on the 3?

me personally, i dont think its in any of their best interests to go. not even jenkins would be a very high pick. there are a bunch of receivers in front of him (even with roy williams staying for his senior year).

i think id have to defer to will's expertise on this one....

You're right about Jenkins. This year's class is stocked with quality wideouts. But remember next year will be much the same.

It would be a tough loss for the Buckeyes, considering Vance is a senior and Gamble looks like a much better corner. None of the other wideouts on the team seem to have breakout potential, but we'll see.

Potential 2004 WR draftees:

Roy Williams
Lee Evans
Reggie Williams
Fred Gibson
Anquan Boldin
Darius Watts
BJ Johnson
Tab Perry

That's another deep class, with several of them capable of monster seasons. So if OSU wins it all, Jenkins might be more inclined to go considering he has his ring and the competition will be just as stiff next year.

OSU wins, Jenkins would definitely be leaning towards the draft. They lose, we'll see. Depends on his mindset.

Regarding Will Smith and Darrion Scott -

Losing both would be a huge blow. With Kenny Peterson gone via graduation, the line would need a big overhaul. There's talent there, but it's not the ideal situation for Tim to be the only guy back.

From what I hear scouts like both players, but I think their status is too uncertain as to whether or not they will be first-rounders. Smith seemed to be leaning more towards staying in the article.

2003 Senior Defensive ends

Jerome McDougle
Michael Haynes
Alonzo Jackson
Kindal Moorehead
Calvin Pace
Aaron Hunt
Cory Redding
Chris Kelsay
Tyler Brayton
Tully Banta-Cain
Kenny Peterson
Jamaal Green

No Julius Peppers or Courtney Brown types, but all solid players that are hard to sort out. If some of those players have monster combines and Smith/Scott don't wow people with computer numbers, it's possible for 4 or 5 ends to be picked before them. Add on underclassmen, such as Terrell Suggs, and that number may turn into 6 or 7. Too risky at this point. I'd say both would most likely be back, barring a huge development.

tressel has stated many times that if a player of his is a top-10 pick, then he should leave early. it seems obvious to me that none of these 3 will be top-3, so i really think if they had some smarts, they would stay. it could mean a much bigger payday in the end. as you know, osu has always had tons of players leave early, regardless of draft status, but im hoping its a new era in that regard too.

I got mad respect for Tressel. He runs a tight ship. One of the big reasons I made fun of OSU was b/c of that idiot Cooper - but y'all already know 'bout that:)

Fox is key. Remember when he was the GOOD corner? Haha, Richard McNutt's injury saved the season.

>Fox is key. Remember when he was the GOOD corner?

its weird, overall, he really did have an excellent season. and im totally comfortable with him returning at corner next year for us. he will improve, he's only a sophmore. going into this year, he was our 'weak link' and mcnutt was supposed to be our 'sure thing'....but we know how that turned out. fox had a lot of great games and made a lot of big plays. but in the games i mentioned (and possibly a few more, i cant remember), he was lit up by bigger and more physical receivers. he never got beat deep, just on 3rd and 8 type plays, he was just always outmatched. if you remember, michigan converted a ridiculous amount of 3rd downs against us, most of which were against fox. and they wound up controlling the clock that game as well.
and that would be a total back-breaker against miami....keep mcgahee under wraps consistently on 1st and 2nd down, only to have the chains moved on us by a dorsey completing a bullshit pass on fox. no way we win in that scenario.

>Haha,
>Richard McNutt's injury saved the season.

true, it wouldve taken a total fuckin breakdown on his part for him to be ousted by a WR (gamble). OSU is very into that whole 'senior respect thing'. no greater example of that with the whole fuckin bellisari disaster. krenzel shouldve been starting as a freshman and woulda been a seasoned veteran by now.

Bellisari...why?! That was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. The guy could not pass AT ALL. He completely sucked at the invention known to everyone else as the "forward pass". He was mystified by the players on pass defense ("you mean he's not on my team?!"). Not to mention the fact he was an drunkard.

He coulda been a decent free safety. That's about it.

It's something fundamentally wrong when you can cast doubt on not being the best in your own conference, but be the best in the country.

However...i think that after we beat Miami there should be no doubt that we are the best team in the country. We will have no losses, beat last years champ and beat the only other undefeated team.

I got respect for Iowa, but that Iowa State loss just looks like shit right now. ISU got destroyed by Boise State and Seneca turned out to be not very good anyway. The Cyclones built a rep off beating Nebraska and hanging with an overrated FSU team. Iowa will be wondering all summer how the hell they choked against ISU.

Sorry DJ, but McGahee is much better than Larry Johnson. I know dude sees 9 man fronts cuz Mills is playing like crap, but so does Chris Brown and he could at least get 100 on 'em (see: OU game). It'll be impossible to keep him under 90.

OSU pass protection. I think we gave up over 30 sacks this year ( alot ofr a team who doesnt pass) and Miami had like 40 plus.

Just to specify, Ohio St. was second worst in the Big Ten in pass protection.
Miami is third best in the nation.
Ohio State's problem is there appears to only really be one way for them to win, and that's the run game. So since the offensive scheme isn't really a matter of conjecture, Maurice Clarett will have to have a game that will define his career at Ohio State. I think he needs at least 200 yards on the ground for Miami to lose, and I think Ohio State needs to block a punt or take an interception to the house to win this game.

123. "20 Reasons Miami Will Win - ESPN swipe"
In response to Reply # 0

By Gene Wojciechowski
ESPN The Magazine

TEMPE, Ariz. -- I'll make it short and sweet: Miami 31, Ohio State 20.

Let me count the 20 ways. . .

1. Pure talent. Generally speaking, you can judge a roster by how many players are drafted by the NFL. Last season's UM championship team had 11 players picked. This time, depending on what underclassmen Willis McGahee and Andre Johnson decide (we're guessing they're gone), the number should be between 7-10 draftees. Players win games and the Hurricanes simply have a better supply of better players.

2. Experience. This is Miami's second consecutive appearance in the national title game, its sixth since 1990. The Hurricane players and coaches are accustomed to these type of games and the pressures that come with it. Ohio State hasn't won a national championship since LBJ was in office.

Miami's Andre Johnson has a nasty way of making defensive backs look foolish.
3. Andre Johnson vs. Chris Gamble. We love Gamble's athleticism, but no way will the Ohio State two-way star (WR and CB) be able to cover Johnson -- the fastest and probably most athletic player on a team full of speed freaks -- one on one. Co-Rose Bowl MVP Johnson toasted Nebraska for seven catches, 199 yards and two touchdowns in last year's BCS Championship. He might not have those same numbers against the Buckeyes, but he'll demand lots of attention. The more attention paid to Johnson, the more potential mismatches at other skill positions.

4. History. No team has won back-to-back titles since the Cornhuskers did it in 1994-95. And a win against Ohio State would keep alive Miami's 34 -- and counting -- victory streak. That would put them in position to tie Oklahoma's mind-boggling 47-game win streak (1953-57) next season.

5. Motivation. "If we don't win this game, the winning streak doesn't really mean anything," said center Brett Romberg. "OK, Miami won 34 games and they were probably the fourth-best winning streak in history, but nobody remembers that -- who cares? If we finish this job, there will be books written about us. And if we don't, then we're just another college football team that won 34 games and they could have pulled off the Fiesta Bowl, but they didn't. I'm telling you, man, people are dying to see us lose. It would make their Christmas holidays if Miami lost, it really would. And we're going to do everything in our power not to let that happen, and I don't think it will happen."

6. Maurice Clarett vs. Ohio State pencil pushers. OSU's star tailback is still seething that he wasn't allowed to return home for the funeral of a boyhood friend. He all but said he was misled, ignored or lied to by certain school officials. Will his remarks have a trickle-down effect? Buckeyes coaches and players say no, that Clarett will show up to play, and play hard. But during a week where every distraction is magnified, Clarett's remarks couldn't have helped OSU's cause.

7. Willis McGahee and Ken Dorsey. McGahee finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting. Dorsey finished fifth. Think they'll have a point to prove Friday evening? Dorsey especially will want to make his last game a memorable one.

8. Larry Coker. Just a quick reminder: HE'S NEVER LOST A GAME!

9. Kellen Winslow Jr. The Hurricanes love to use their tight ends. Jeremy Shockey had five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown in last season's championship game. Winslow could have a similar game. I'll take Winslow against any Ohio State linebacker. I'll take the 6-foot-5 Winslow against 5-11 all-America strong safety Mike Doss, who is much better in run-support than pass coverage.

10. Maurice Clarett's shoulder. There's a reason why Tressel didn't allow anyone to hit Clarett during pre-Fiesta practices: an injured shoulder that forced the tailback to miss two games and play only sparingly in two others. The tough Clarett is much healthier, but he still isn't 100 percent. He'll wear a protective harness for the game, but fully expects the Hurricanes to go after the shoulder. He isn't alone. We asked Ohio State free safety Donnie Nickey what he'd do if he had a free shot at a player with an injury. "You take it," he said.

11. Defensive line. Remember that stuff about NFL draftees? Miami has, what, seven future draft picks on its first- and second-team defensive line. Ohio State's offensive line has improved, but it hasn't faced the likes of Jerome McDougle, William Joseph, Matt Walters, Jamaal Green, and Vince Wilfork. Miami had five or more sacks in five games. OSU gave up 31 sacks. Uh, oh.

12. Numbers. Miami has won its last 12 games against ranked opponents. Five of those 12 victories came on the road or neutral site.

13. Been there, done that. McGahee has run against every defense in the book. Eight-, nine-man fronts? McGahee has seen it. Make Dorsey beat you? Sure, no problem. Take the best shot of every opponent? Used to it. "The only thing that will kill us is turnovers and penalties," McGahee said. Translation: nobody can beat the Hurricanes. . . except the Hurricanes.

14. Interested. Sure, Miami phoned it at times during the season. But when the Hurricanes brought their A-game, and even their B-game, the results were scary: UM 41, Florida 16. . . UM 26, Tennessee 3. . . UM 49, Syracuse 7.

15. Sean Taylor. The Hurricanes say he'll leave Miami as the program's best-ever safety. The Fiesta Bowl will be the perfect showcase.

16. Speed. Miami has more of it. "I don't know if they can match our speed, to tell you the truth," said Romberg. There's Hurricanes speed, and then there's everybody else.

17. Attitude. The Hurricanes are ready. Even scout team running back Frank Gore is popping off these days. Gore, who hurt his knee last spring and won't play in a game until next season, says he's better than Clarett. You know what? The Hurricanes think he is, too.

18. More numbers. Miami led the nation in pass defense. No way is Craig Krenzel going to beat the Hurricanes with his arm (the Buckyes were eighth in the Big Ten in total offense). And, yes, Ohio State's fine defense gives up an average of just 12.2 points per game. But this is Miami we're talking about. The Hurricanes score early, often and fast. Of their 67 touchdown drives, the Hurricanes averaged just 1:58. Eighteen of those drives took less than a minute.

19. Playmakers. The Hurricanes have one at nearly every position.

20. Timing. This is Miami's time. Ohio State, which could return every offensive starter next year, will have to wait.

=================

Wow. Couldn't have said it better myself. Especially #'s 11, 14, & 18

But like i said b4...i think making Dorsey beat you is the key. Dont let McGahee go wild and pressure Dorsery. Not giving up a lot of sacks on offense as well. I still like our chances.

20 reasons why the Buckeyes will win

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Ivan Maisel
ESPN.com

PHOENIX -- Ohio State 18, Miami 17. The Buckeyes pull off the upset of the two-year-old century. Here's 20 reasons why:

1. No turnovers. The number of touchdowns that Ohio State opponents scored off of turnovers. And that touchdown was scored by Kent State, way back in the second game of the season. When it comes to giving the ball away, the Buckeyes make Scrooge seem like the United Way.

2. Mike Doss. The senior All-America strong safety, No. 2, who turned down being picked in the first round in the 2002 NFL draft so that he could return to Ohio State and win a national championship. You have to like a guy who knows how to get what he wants. Doss has good cover skills, and his coaches talk about how well he tackles "in space," which means either he's an excellent open-field tackler, or he'll be the first draft choice when the NFL expands to the moon.

3. The number of times that Miami has played -- and lost -- in the Fiesta Bowl. UCLA outscored Miami 39-37 in the 1985 game. Penn State won its historic 14-10 upset two years later. In the 1994 Fiesta, Arizona embarrassed Miami, 29-0.

4. The number of Division I-AA national championships that Ohio State coach Jim Tressel won during the 1990s at Youngstown State. He knows how to prepare his teams for the big game.
4a. Run stoppers. The Buckeyes allowed only four rushing touchdowns, fewest in Division I-A.

5. Pop culture. In the year of the Bobblehead, Ohio State has four that have flown off the shelves: Archie Griffin, Eddie George, Chris Spielman, and The Coach, Woody Hayes. Score one for the team on the cutting edge of pop culture.

6. Cie Grant. No. 6, a linebacker so versatile that he volunteered to help out at cornerback a year ago when the Buckeyes needed help. Having returned upfield this year, Grant is third on the team in tackles for loss with 10. Grant personifies the athletic ability on this defense.

7. Chris Gamble. No. 7, the player so nice you'll see him twice. Actually, you'll see Gamble, the sophomore flanker/corner/co-MVP, on nearly every snap. Gamble picked up enough skills in pass defense when he tried it at midseason that he became an All-Big Ten corner.

8. Kicking game. All-American kicker Mike Nugent made 24 of 26 field goals this season. These weren't all glorified extra points, either. Nugent nailed 10 of 11 three-pointers from 40 yards and out. With a defense as dominant as Ohio State, the importance of field goals is magnified. Nugent is a potent offensive weapon.

9. Seeing red. Ohio State opponents went into the red zone 35 times. They came out with only nine touchdowns. As we said, the Buckeyes give nothing away.

10. Tie one on. Tressel's tie and sweater vest. Not exactly GQ, but Tressel brings a dash of sartorial splendor to the sideline. Omen alert: the last national championship coach to wear a tie on the sideline? Gene Stallings of Alabama, which a decade ago overcame its role as double-digit underdog to humiliate ... Miami, 34-13.

11. The number of runs over 15 yards that the Buckeyes allowed in 13 games. Miami thrives on big plays and quick-strike touchdowns. Without them, the Hurricanes will have to remain patient and grind out scores. That means they will be playing by Ohio State rules. No one can out-Buckeye the Buckeyes.

12. Forget the spread. In the 26 bowl games played through Jan. 1, 12 favorites not only failed to cover the spread, they lost outright. Funny things can happen to teams when they haven't played for several weeks. Miami is favored by 12 points in the Fiesta Bowl.

13. Finally, we will get to see No. 13, freshman Maurice Clarett, do what he does best. Hard as this is to believe after this week, it is not debating. The red tape in the athletic department, which prevented Clarett from returning home to Youngstown for the funeral of a friend, is the first opponent to shut him down all season. He has had nearly six weeks for the aches in his left shoulder to dissipate. Clarett rushed for 1,190 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, much of it when he wasn't at full speed. He will be 6-foot, 230 pounds of full speed Friday night.

14. Power game. Miami is vulnerable to powerful running backs. Florida State's Greg Jones rushed for 189 yards and a touchdown against the 'Canes. In their next game, they gave up 175 yards and a score to Avon Cobourne of West Virginia. Miami also has a four-game streak of allowing 100-yard rushers. That plays into the hands of an Ohio State team that loves to move the chains and play keepaway.

15. Winning close ones. Ohio State has been belittled because it won six games by a touchdown or less. Hey, give me a team that knows how to win close games. Miami had one close game this season. Faced with protecting a 28-27 lead in the last 5:17 against Florida State, punter Freddie Capshaw shanked a punt that gave the Seminoles good field position. Then the Miami defense couldn't prevent Florida State from two-minute drilling down to the Hurricanes' 26. Winning a close game by crossing your fingers and hoping that Xavier Beitia misses a 43-yard field goal does not exactly inspire confidence.

16. Craig Krenzel. Ken Dorsey isn't the only starting quarterback in this game with one career loss. Ohio State junior Craig Krenzel is 14-1, and he barely played in the loss, the Buckeyes' 31-28 defeat by South Carolina in the Outback Bowl last season. Krenzel, who wears No. 16, says the analytical skills that he employs in his major of molecular genetics are not the same as the skills he applies to reading defenses. On an offense that plays Hippocratic football (First, do no harm), it's small wonder that Krenzel has designs on medical school.

17. The home crowd. There are so many scarlet-and-gray wearing fans in the Valley of the Sun that the Ohio legislature ought to consider annexation. Add to that the natural inclination to root for the underdog, and the fans at Sun Devil Stadium will belong to the Buckeyes.

18. That's the jersey number of fifth-year senior punter Andy Groom, who has pinned so many teams with his booming leg, he may be a first-team All-America in football and wrestling. Groom had more punts inside the 20 (14) than he did touchbacks (11). He averaged 44.6 yards per kick, and the Buckeyes finished 13th in the nation in net punting (37.2-yard average). By contrast, Miami is 85th in net punting (32.7-yard average). That's five yards in every exchange of punts.

19. Toughness. You want tough? Offensive tackle Shane Olivea underwent an emergency appendectomy (is there any other kind?) in mid-October and started against Minnesota 10 days later. Say all you want about the NFL draftees on the Miami defensive line. But the Hurricanes can't be any tougher than Olivea.

20. Script Ohio. TBDBITL (The Best Damn Band in the Land). The 'Shoe. Woody's short sleeves. Hopalong Cassady. Woody's short temper. Paul Brown. Archie's thighs. Woody's short right hook. Ohio State was winning national championships and Heismans when south Florida was little more than sand and alligators.

Tradition is important in two places: Fiddler on the Roof (go rent the movie), and college football. Ohio State has more.

You gotta love #20. Listing the OSU Band as a reason they will win? That's questionable, Ivan.

As for #11, I agree. It will be a good game, but Miami will have to find a way to exploit the defense, getting at least 3 big plays in to gain momnetum. Which they will, of course.

So, for the real question. Where the hell is everyone going to watch the game?

Best of luck to all.

Miami - If y'all pull the back2back, much respect. Almost impossible in modern college football. The streak is amazing.

OSU - If y'all do it, congratulations on shocking the world - but either way, it's been a great season.

Oilers move to Nashville, become the Titans, go to the superbowl, lose by a yard.

I get accepted to Miami, they go to BCS championship, lose by a yard.

At least during the Superbowl I didn't have to bar-hop to find one damn Miami fan to sit with! What the fuck is it with you buckeyes, you guys have colonized the entire city of Nashville. And then Eddie's all up on the side line, talkin to Maurice, helping Ohio State to win. Fuck! I hope he picked up some tips on winning Superbowls, so maybe I can experience what it feels like to win a championship. I won't even touch the fact the Miami had won the ball game, how the refs stole it or whatever. As much as that has to demoralize you, champions should be able to rally past that and still pick up the win. Props to Ohio State, for bringing their A-game, and taking advantage of every mistake Miami and the refs made. Much love Ohio State, all 4 and fucking half million of you guys. You've been waiting a hell of a lot longer than I have.

I think that in the end both the Big 10 and the Big East were underestimated. They proved to be the two strongest conferences this bowl season (which is a bit different than the reg. season, but I digress).

Good job. I never did account for the Krenzel running factor- and neither did the Canes. Running QB's hurt the Canes all season long, and last night while everyone on OSU made great contributions- Krenzel's heart and heady play won that game.

WOW! what a game. Two champions going at it. I almost wished it wouldn't end. Doss proved prophetic, and Miami proved over confident- to have an after party already planned with musical guests and everything was crazy.

Will this be the last we see of Willis McGahee? I think so. He prolly won't get another chance to start again. Miami's incoming freshman are ridiculous plus Geathers, Payton and Gore will be at full strength.

What a game. OSU did everything they HAD to do to win, and Miami did everything they HAD to do to lose. That call on Sharpe in the enzone was questionable, but such is life eh?

Once again, congrats. I was rooting for 'em all game long.

Don't be this good next year, 'cus a mature Georgia team is gonna come callin. Ya'll don't want none.

Michael Doss for making a call to stay in school his senior year to win a national championship(that is a Babe Ruth at the fence type call), Kirk Herbstreit for keeping the faith, Krenzel, Maurice Clarrett, Oddyssey, 3xKrazy, as well as Will for keeping this season interesting, Jenkins, Gamble, the entire city of Ann Arbor, all those hyped players we had the chance to expose(kingsbury, gesser, Johnson, Dorsey, etc), Wilhelm, Groom, Fox, AJ Hawk and the enitire Buckeye program, but most importantly a man I like to call the Rudy Gulliani of college football Mr. Jim Tressel and the dynasty he is building in Columbus OHIO

This has been one of the most exciting experiences of my life

What a way to finish, that was one of the best games I've ever seen in my life. And I hate both teams! I'm sitting there getting butterflies about Miami and Ohio State. Shit, I need to wash my damn eyes out:)

I've just got to add on that it was a fun season to watch and I think the healthy debates just made everything that much more interesting. I kept questioning this team but the anti-Coop in the bulletproof sweater-vest just kept proving me wrong.

Once again, I can't front and much respect for pulling off somethin' I thought I'd never live to see...a Buckeye team with heart.

Peace to CTOWN_REPREZENTA, Radin, DJ Odyssey and 3xCrazy for repping their team from day one. Y'all deserved it. Just don't let that preseason numba one go to your heads!

I laid out everything OSU needed to do to win this game? And they did it (except Clarett have a lotta yards). You'd think I was Coach Tressel or something. And to the haters: Dont think we wont be right in the thick of the hunt next year. Only real major loss is Doss. Btw...there will be a QB controversey next year.

Good prediction, D.J. Odyssey. Coming from a Bama fan (Roll Tide, 12-1 next year, not that it matters) I saw this one coming. Y'all exposed Miami's quarterback for the mediocre talent that he is just like we exposed Toretta in '93. Lord knows I saw this one coming. Congrats and if we weren't on probation, I'd say see you next year. (Tears welling up in eyes)

btw, Brodie Croyle will be a Heisman candidate due to Mike Price's 50 pass a game offense.

He overthrows recievers and has poor arm strength. I told ya'll that if McGahee was shut down...OSU wins. He was the omnly constant for them all year. When he had a good game...someone got blown out. When Dorsey was suspect, the game was close. We did both.

In response to Reply # 162

But I gained a lot of respect for Dorsey after that game. He was under pressure all night but was still a leader to me. That interception to Fox looked like miscommunication between either Roscoe Parrish (who slowed down) or Kellen Winslow II (who might've ran the wrong option route - post/corner).

He was on fire to start the game, 8-10 for 110, but he's a system quarterback. But there's nothing wrong with that. I mean, how many people thought he'd never even play DIII ball with that frame?

Add on the fact that Andre Johnson was getting locked up by Gamble after the 1st quarter.

When he laid out that nice strike to KII in the first OT, it was great how they showed him in the huddle telling everybody that the offense has to go back out there, no matter what. Stay focused. That's key at Miami cuz I saw a lot of cats ready to light their victory cigars after that play.

Dude was never a physical presence, and he does have a lot of talent around him, but he was right for that team. They believed in him, he made plays in most games down the stretch, and if he really wasn't good I'm sure the talent pool at Miami would've found another guy by now. Much respect to Ken.

(And isn't it a little odd that OSU fans are knocking a QB that isn't super talented but finds a way to win? Um, is Craig Krenzel not your QB? Sure, Dorsey lost to him, but it could've gone either way.)

He is a great leader...and he has heart. He just aint that good. I dont think he should have abeen a heisman finalist.

How quickly have you forgotten that I said Krenzel was a bum maybe in like pt 3 or 4. He sucks. Still does. Its amazing they were able to make it this far with him. I hope that the kid from Canton who is freshan this year learns the office and creates a controversy.

He leads and he makes big plays when necesary. But you see Will, he reminds me of Robert Horry. Not a bum, and definitely not the guy that will lose a game for you. But in the right situation, he can be exposed.

I think the big difference was the pass rush. No one got in on Dorsey like that all season. He was not used to pressure like that, so to see him throw interceptions, and to see him on his ass all game was unlike any game in the last, well, 35 games.

From the first snap, the OSU line was on his ass. So, even if the running game was working a little, and the LBs/DBs were coming up to help the run, I still think it would have been tough for him to have success.

They found the formula to beat the unbeatable. I am a die-hard UM fan, but much respect to OSU. They deserved to win that game.

that takes pressure of Dorsey. They could have run very effective play actions, and i think we would have been less like ly to blitz. That intial sack, IMO, was maybe the biggest play of the game. Because it set the tone defensely for the game.

Yeah, you will. Preseason number one is possible.

What about if Jenkins and Smith go pro? I've heard that Will Smith wants to go pro, and Jenkins has his ring. W/O Jenkins, and Vance gone, and Gamble mostly at corner, the wideout position needs serious help. How about Wilhelm? Andrea's nice, but he ain't gonna be as good as Matt in his first year.

>Btw...there will be a
>QB controversey next year.

You should hope not. I can't remember the last college team that won anything with two quarterbacks. Zwick and McMullen haven't shown they can make that 4th and 14 play. Krenzel is your man.

(in no particular order)

-Clarett's strip
-Clarett's TD
-Will Smith's sack (the first Miami offensive play)
-Mike Doss' interception
-The pass interference call (cant lie..that was a little questionable. should have been holding.)
-Krenzel to Jenkins on 4th and 14
-The 4th and 1 defensive stand.

I'm not crying, but that P.I. call was crap. Maybe holding... maybe. But at that time of the game, I think that is a call that you let go. Whatever, OSU was the better team Friday night. I guess the right team won.

But the defender didnt make a legal play right there. I think ya gotta call something. He just made the wrong call.

Let us not forget the P.I. on Ohio State Miami's next series. That was real suspect. Or the OSU TD catch in the back of the endzone.

Too bad it came down to that play, because that would have ended the game. But it did.
