"The Official 2018 NBA Prospect Thread 4 Thruthiness and Justivity"

Less than a month until the draft. You know the drill.

I'll list the prospects, you list your thoughts, as detailed or as basic ("he'll be good"/"he'll be sorry") as you want. As meticulously bias-free as possible or as blindly agenda-driven as you want.

Get on record before these guys play a single NBA game as to how you think they'll pan out. Stake claims, "buy stock," etc.

BUT DON'T BE LATE.

I don't think I need to rattle off Ayton's gifts, both from a skill standpoint and from a physical standpoint. It's very easy to see why the expectation is that he'll be the #1 pick in the draft. He genuinely coasted his way through last season, and he made some gaudy numbers look really easy.

My one major concern is his motor. If he's locked in when he hits the NBA, I expect a 20/10 guy... but he would definitely disappear for stretches at Arizona, and sometimes for whole games. His steal and block rates are way lower than you'd expect a guy with his physique to have, he often seems to be a "conserve energy for the offensive end" guy defensively, and despite being *easily* Arizona's best player, there'd be several games where he seemed content to just stand in the middle and do nothing. He never played fewer than 25 minutes in a game, but he had nine games with fewer than 15 points last season-- compare that to Bagley's three games.

Perhaps it's unfair to compare Ayton's motor with that of the highest motor player in the draft, and perhaps he coasted because he knew how shitty his conference was last year, so he wouldn't need to dominate night in and night out like that. He also seems like a guy who's still learning the game, for better or worse-- his awareness on both ends was lacking on occasion, but maybe that's part of being the type of young big he is. Several of the players below him in the draft have better "feel for the game" at a comparable young age though...

Still, you take him #1 despite his concerns, because you're Phoenix, you need the highest ceiling guy, and you'd rather risk ending up with a *mere* 15/8 good big man than risk letting him go elsewhere and become a Hall of Famer.

I'm gonna rock with allstar potential but I could also see oft injured and never met potential.

Him + Josh Jackson + Booker has scary potential though. If Chriss or Bender develops and they get the right PG...Suns could be dangerous in a few seasons.

I just don't know if he wins.
Everything you want is there.
ive seen him outplayed by bigs in this draft class for a full game, and then in a 2 minute span do things against them that make you go "oh, thats why he's still 1/1a/2 etc."

at his best I can see last years Boogie type statline.
Career wise he could have the same fate and thats what makes me nervous.

He's REALLY good close to the rim. Having a J to mix it up will make getting those numbers (in his prime) possible.

I ain't saying he'll be there yr 1 but by 25-26 I could see it.

By contrast, AD only did 14/10 at Kentucky his one year there.

I watched a ton of Duke games this year. Dude has the potential.

Not saying I'm gonna be right but that's my assessment.

We had this same talk about AD too and I said he'd be better than KG...and he is.

He has a shot. I read somewhere that he wants to be a 20/10 player his rookie season. Blake was 22/12 his rookie year.

And honestly, I think Bagley has a lil more talent coming in.

His vert ain't as devistating as Blake's but he's still athletically gifted. And his game is a little more refined than Blake's at this stage.

"But I'm concerned about which position he'll play!" LMAO, yeah, like that matters in today's NBA. You've got a guy who works harder than anyone on the court in *that* body with *that* athleticism? AND he can sink 3s when needed?

He'll struggle with the Js/FTs early, but he'll work it out in a few years, and he'll get you 15+ on sheer fucking hard work alone. If he goes to the Kings, you may see a double-double Year 1. And if his career starts with Blake Griffin-esque numbers (minus the assists), don't be surprised.

Definitely gave me the "THAT BOY IS A MAN!" reaction more than anyone since AD. He's got some things to round out to reach that level in the pros but he is very bankable for the team that picks him. Doesn't have the limitations Okafor did, I don't see him busting at all just a question of if he is good, very good or great

always plays hard.
will rebound.
I dont trust him to do anything other than rebounding and getting buckets.
While he may put up the best numbers on a team, I don't think a team with him as the best player wins a lot.
Him getting his hasnt always made it easier for other guys to get theirs.
I won't do "not a winner" cause thats unfair to kids...he's also had every opportunity since 15 to be on stacked squads geared towards winning. He won, his teams didnt. makes me nervous. Still, 17 and 8 rolling out of bed with sleep in his eye on just talent and effort.

maybe in time that person will turn out to be a genius. we'll see. i see what you're saying, some danger of a boogie type situation (numbers, no wins) here, i guess, but then again they drafted WCS and it hasn't made an impact. one defender isn't enough, if the real of the team is trash he won't stand out other than a few mistakes erased.

LeJeter is gonna be a problem in the next couple of seasons. Crooked shot or not.

better then Ben Simmons.... SMH, Doncic's best quality is that he wears The People's Number in Euroleague.

SIKE

but the only thing that really gives me pause in NBA is his shaky handles and his "in the paint" game. his passing and decision making alone for a 19 year old is pretty top-tier.

He's going to be AT LEAST as good as Ben. But better? I dunno....

Can play three positions and is easily the most polished player I have seen out of these prospects. Floor would be a super-sub (think Manu, Crawford), ceiling on-and-off all-star (I dunno maybe Oladipo level). I don't think there is a huge gap between ceiling and floor but both are pretty high

It's just so hard to tell.

The fact that dude is reportedly a 6'7 white guy of marginal athleticism would alone scare me away from picking him over Ayton or Bagley. He could be the fucking second coming with the highest basketball IQ I've ever seen, or he could be simply a guy who's good enough to star against Euro pros but not be The Guy in the NBA. I just can't tell from YouTube clips.

and thats what are you seeing him do?

its not insignificant, but technique and not folding under Euroleague finals pressure at his age seem like all that can really be taken away

obviously there are many posters here better at it than me, but im not sure i could trust my own eyes in Euro context.

That was on NBATV I imagine. In Colombia we got ACB games on Fox Sports. He was the MOP and MVP this year, 19 and the best player in arguably the second best league in the world. I think he is in the right era for his style, too.

my question was i guess more about what could be gleaned from that context

if a hypothetical tournament was played among Villanova, Michigan, Real Madrid, and Fenerbahce, how would that go? is there already an athleticism gap even before reaching pro level (i suspect yes)? are the European coaches better than Beilein and Wright (i suspect no)?

its not so much the availabilty, but the validity of whats available. its not like hes made a career out of dogging Americans and Canadians at the intl level.

In response to Reply # 195

Physical maturity, experience, etc. We have seen Eurobasket squads test and even beat NBA teams. Would never happen for an NCAA team.

Obviously there are differences in terms of style of play, use of players, etc. If anything I think his numbers are a little watered down because you don't see guys play the full game like they do often in the NBA, especially the playoffs. I doubt he played 30 MPG and maybe barely that in the playoffs.

I do think that you play a more spread out game in the foreign leagues and his so-so ability in traffic will present some adjustments in the NBA. But you can see a guy's technique and acumen very well seeing them against European competition. I actually think it gives you a better idea than seeing one year of a guy in college or even multiple years in certain contexts.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

He's too good at basketball for it not to.
Do I think he's a 25ppg guy? no.
probably have couple of 19-22 pt seasons.
The passing, break starting off of rebounds, getting guys looks is going to make him a fantastic glue guy/starter which if his team begins to win will make him a perennial all star
should average 6-8 boards and 6-8 assista for a very long time.
he's gonna have some tough moments on defense but name somebody in todays game who doesnt.

Lower ceiling than James to me, so I think he won't quite ever reach MVP level because of his defense and that I worry how he'll hang with the very best defenders. But people have the same about Harden, so we'll see. Like a hundred times more offensively skilled than anyone in this draft besides Young, though

His frame is built for it. He develops his body like Giannis has and this man will dominate the defensive end like some dominate on O.

With the right G, he'll get lots of lobs initially. Has a decent J as well.

His O develops while he gets stronger and Bamba is gonna scare the dogsh*t out of most teams.

7'10" wingspan man...smh.

Despite his size, he got bullied by college bigs-- not even the biggest and strongest ones either-- because he's so thin and lanky. He's also not a very physical player at this point in general-- doesn't set hard screens, would rather watch the ball than box out, etc. He's also a guy who settles for jumpers on offense for the same reason-- and he doesn't pass well either. So, y'know, that's all scary if you're trying to take him Top 5.

Of course, the potential is obvious. Get him to 250-260 lbs, teach him to bang inside a bit, and you have a quick-on-his-feet big with a 9'6 standing reach that could hit 33% from 3. That's... an absurd combo of things. That's All-Star material.

But if he struggles with the weight and/or his shot, he could easily just become a taller John Henson. He'll stick around the league because he's an elite shot blocker who can run the floor well and who's long enough to snag enough boards to make playing him just worthwhile enough.

There's no way a dude as intriguing as him won't go top 6, but he should be targeted exclusively by a team in hardcore multi-year tank mode, who can afford to bring him along insanely slowly, help him put on weight, help him learn some moves inside. If a team expects 22+ minutes from him next year, I think they'll be really disappointed. And he's got to go somewhere that actually develops players well, because while Bamba's a smart dude, he has a lot of game to learn.

do I like the 3 point shooting? I don't. (and ive said as much directly)
I like that KG/AD/Dirk top of the key jumper that allows turnarounds on small guys and killing guys on fakes and closeouts.

That said, he's a smart kid and he'll figure it out.
As im reading a piece on him this tells me why I think the world of him

"I want to put myself in the best position to stay out on the floor," Bamba says. "There's a reason why a lot of bigs aren't on the floor . They can't guard those smalls. They can't shoot."

He knows if he wants to do amazing things *via* the game of basketball he has to be good at the game of basketball and the first thing he needs to do is stay on the floor. Nothing else matters.

All defense staple via eye test and metrics. he'll develop enough offense to keep guys honest and then he's a piece on winning teams rest of his career.

Obviously there is a huge question mark here but how the hell else would a team get this kind of talent in the 8 to 10 range? It isn't like they found him under a rock (Giannis), this guy was at a major program. Would love to see him in a Sixers uni, even if it might continue the proud tradition of medical redshirts in the NBA.

Dude could be T-Mac with G-Hill's poise or he could be T-Mac the injury prone, never reach his potential guy.

I'd still take the chance.

Hard to glean much from his insanely limited time on the floor at Mizzou, but he very, very easily passes the eye test. Good stroke for a guy his size. Great positional size, a matchup problem even at the NBA level.

Two small concerns: didn't love the handle I saw, and didn't love that he doesn't seem to have much "wiggle"-- seems like his wild speed for his size is mostly end to end, not side to side. Also not sure how strong a defender he'd be if the lateral movement is blah.

Still, if your comparison is "the Diet Coke Kevin Durant," that says a lot. Even if he struggles next level, I could see his floor being something like 14 and 6. That sort of talent requires a very high pick. Didn't see enough to declare outright if he's an All-Star at the next level, but the potential is glaringly obvious, and I think he has a higher floor than most other All-Star potential guys in the draft.

i gotta start with 100% health.

I crunch a lot of numbers on youth players.
I see a lot of youth players.

I use both of those and see what lines up.

55%+ from 2
36%+ from 3
85% from the line.

for 3 years. Against EVERYONE. He's been a thing since 2015 and he couldnt duck. And everyone got the business.

Do I like him as an iso/jab step creator guy? no. not in the half court. As you mentioned north south with momentum he's a marvel.

east west not so much. That said at 6'11 if he gets switches and he's shooting over 6'8" guys its a bucket.

I think optimally hes a 25ppg guy. My only concern if health is 100% is that the scheme he plays in doesnt feature him right. Keep him moving and put the ball in his shooting pockets. in 3-5 years if he adds stuff to his game fine.

He'll defend, rebound, and shoot 3s well, so he can be used by everyone... but he struggled to stay on the floor in a lousy Big 10 due to foul trouble, so I believe his defense will go through an adjustment period, and he never really showed the ability to take over games by himself in college-- he only scored 20+ points *twice*, both against terrible teams in blowouts.

I think the best thing for him would be to get selected in that 5-8 range. Let the stars go first. Otherwise, he'll forever be the guy some GM picked over Michael Porter or Marvin Bagley.

built for all the NBA has coming in terms of intellect and personality
the 3 is real. he hits it. the form is weird but he's at 40% at every level.

he's gonna rebound. he's gonna hit 3s. he's gonna block shots. if the counting numbers arent sexy, the advanced #s will show his impact.

could he be a starter on an eventual NBA champion? Yeah I think so.

did Okafor-kandi even play 10 games this year???

My summation of whose going to make it in the league and who isn't ...is not tainted by me being a Bruin fan.... actually Prince Luc has long surpassed what I thought he'd do in the league..he's still a contributing NBA player..

A contributing NBA player.... something Duke misses at more times than not...

ya'll putting dukies in the All-star game before they drafted is out of pure desperation and hope because your guys often flop like a fish...

We had 3 UCLA point guard in this playoffs ballin out...

Duke has had 1 good point guard in the NBA in 100 years..

stop it.

oh yeah..

at the same age he is better than west was and he is also more athletic. west was a tough, smart, sound player. we'll see where carter's technique goes. but i hardly think setting his ceiling at west is too lofty. he is pretty good, he could have done 20/10 on the right team in college, he just had to play alongside a real strong big so he was a bit deferential

People keep comparing Marvin Bagley to Chris Bosh, but Carter and Bosh's numbers freshman year of college have a *lot* of similarities. Carter has the slightly better ORtg, better rebound rates on both ends, better shot blocker, better free throw shooter (!!), better assist rate. And their usage rates weren't too different either. Bosh was better from 3, but Carter still made 42% from 3. Yes, Carter's ORtg is likely elevated because he had so many dunks and finishes at the rim compared to Bosh's offense... but WE'RE COMPARING THE NUMBERS OF THIS KID TO CHRIS BOSH. And those aren't raw numbers, those are rates and percentages.

Am I saying Carter *will* be Bosh? No, because their bodies/athleticism/etc aren't the same, and yes, the game is very different at the next level, but I bring it up to say I do believe he can show more facing the basket than he got to do at Duke, and if that comes along, there's little he *can't* do. Carter is also better defensively than Ayton or Bagley-- of course, they have the better measurables, so Carter will go below them. But Carter is a high-IQ, both-end player with real skill on offense, a nose for the glass, great shot blocking timing, good passing for a big....

... he's one of the highest floor guys in this draft. Maybe not the "sexy" pick, but tremendously safe. He'll give you high quality minutes Night 1, and in the right system, he 100% has All-Star potential. People compare what he can do to what Horford does on the Celtics... I can easily see that. (But remember that Carter is well ahead of where Horford was at 19... or even 20.)

Great length. Very smart. Will be good doing the non-quantifiable stuff like setting screens and moving without the ball smartly.

Do I see him as a huge star? No. So it's tough to cyse him as a real high pick but if he were in the 10-15 range I would be falling over myself to draft him.

He shoots beautifully, he slashes, he defends terrifically, he's smart as shit, he's a perfect team player. Great size and length for a SG/SF type of wing. No real weakness, except he needs some handles.

But every winning team needs a versatile 3-and-D with a high IQ, and that's Bridges. He'll stick in the league forever, and don't be surprised when he ends up as a starter, an essential 3rd/4th option type, on a championship winner.

I do *not* see him as a 3-and-D guy. He is more than that. I would love to see him land in Utah, he is the kind of versatile wing that could really thrive under Snyder and bring them consistency. Nice length, smart defender, a guy who can give you a little of everything on O.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Needs to put on 20 lbs of muscle and prove that he can be consistent with the playmaking that he's shown in flashes at Alabama. I have no doubt that dude can run PnR with ease, but he's definitely more of a combo right now.

Still, fuck, he's soooooo pressed, and he's so goddamn quick, and he's got good handles, and when he does pass, he's skilled at it... I don't doubt that he can become a good starter in the NBA. And if it clicks, I think he's the highest ceiling of the PG prospects-- the speed and bammaness combo is so enticing.

at worst he ends up being Shabazz Napier, who, after review, has become a solid NBA guard. really good in Portland this year

In response to Reply # 10

He's crafty, a strong passer, terrific handles, and a shot that obviously gets hot in a hurry and has unlimited range. One can see the scenario in which everything goes right for him...

... but his decision-making is oftentimes bad, his shots are often very forced. You say that's part of the team he was on-- that's fair. BUT there are other cons that aren't due to team role. His measurables aren't great-- he's small, not strong, not long, and not especially athletic. He's a bad defender-- the way teams go at Steph? They'll 100% do the same to Trae from Day 1. And it's worth noting that no one anticipated that he'd be a 1-and-done... and he wasn't nearly as effective in the back half of their season when the competition got tougher. He had good games... but he shot 46% from 2 and 32% from 3 in conference.

So you take him lotto, focus on his craftiness/handles/passing, and hope that the shot selection comes along. In that scenario, he's a good starter, maybe even one of those borderline All-Stars if he had a hot month or two... but I'm admittedly a Trae Young skeptic. I think it all depends on whether he's trying to be a star or if he's trying to win. He could be a lower option on a good team... or he could gun on a bad team.

Given that he is going to a shitty team things could go wrong here. If they keep him in the Steph role, he won't be that great, high volume, low efficiency. If they convert him into a real point guard, I think he will be good. He's got vision, passing skills, elusiveness, etc. Let him use that shot judiciously and be a creator more often.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 11

He’s got tremendous size, length, and feel. Even though he’s not the fastest, I trust him to keep penetrating successfully next level. His FT shooting was good, and combine that with his admittedly low attempt number 3 point shooting, I think he can make shooting work— he’s not one you can just sag off of and force to shoot, cuz he *can* make them.

Has to put on some muscle and has to prove that he can still drive against NBA talent. He also had a few games where his turnovers were out of control, so yeah, he needs to shore that up. But he’s young. I’d take this kid top ten, put him in the weight room, and hope I’ve found my starting PG of the future. Worst case scenario, he’s a good backup who could shred your team’s backup.

Maybe that sounds like an insult, but it's not-- he could give you a 14 and 6. Good prototypical size and skill for a late lotto wing. Passes the eye test without question. Wish he was more athletic or a more consistent outside shooter. Also needs better handles and defense. Still, you have to take the potential-- he's got a lot going for him for how young he is.

Another guy who should've left last year. His shooting and his motor consistency were both *worse* this year. He's a tough rebounder and defender, and he's one of the very, very few guys outside of the top 10 of this draft who has the capacity to singlehandedly change a game. When he's locked in, he's got the size, athleticism, and IQ to make going inside a non-starter. Also a really surprisingly good passer.

BUT HE CAN'T SHOOT. In today's NBA, you can't be a 50% FT type of guy. He shot *below* 50% from the stripe in college. No clue why you wouldn't Hack-a-Rob if he's hot to cool him off. He's also a guy who absolutely disappears-- or at least he has the last two seasons. For whole games, even.

So I'd wait until the late lottery, and if I'm a team that either (a) needs a home run desperately more than a safe pick, or (b) can afford to stash and develop him, then I take him late lotto without thinking. His basement is like a Bismack Biyombo type, so he will still play, but his upside is something like a smaller Andre Drummond. Definitely *not* in vogue with how the sport is going, but if you want a big man who has the potential to impose will on both ends, Williams at least has that *potential.*

The downside is obvious: he's a 6'4 shooting guard with real questions about his shot and his handles. Worst case scenario, you could end up with a shorter, skinnier Justise Winslow.

That said, the game is increasingly all about versatility and switching everything defensively, and Smith was *made* for that. He's got 6'10 wingspan, and while he can get backed down by stronger post guys, I saw this guy defend Mo Bamba at times in college. Unafraid, physical, very high motor. Athletic and quick as fuck. Doesn't turn the ball over or make stupid plays. Zhaire isn't any more of a question mark than Donovan Mitchell was, and Mitchell was two years older than Smith when drafted-- and in many ways, Smith is the better prospect, as he was superior defensively and shot from the outside better than Mitchell did his freshman year (admittedly both on limited attempts).

I would start looking at him as early as tenth. I'd rather gamble on Zhaire Smith than take Miles Bridges or some of the other late lotto guys. Worst case, you can wheel him out as a high-motor defensive specialist, a 1 SPG and 1 BPG per game type of freak. Best case, if he can shoot 37% from 3 and loosen up the handles, you've got an All-Star type of dude. Not a lot of guys after the Top 10ish in this draft that you could say have as high a ceiling.

Could start on a good team if he's the fifth best starter. He can defend some, hit open 3s, and move well in transition. Can't create, can't shoot off dribble, stiff handle. Inconsistent motor.

He should've left last year when we had less game tape on him and he had an extra year of development potential. If he goes Top 10, that's a disappointment waiting to happen unless major development happens.

I suppose the best thing I can say about him is his floor, all things considered, is fairly high, because he could be a decent 3-and-D guy. Just don't really ask much of him. Mikal Bridges is much better IMO.

He's a tough, tough player, with good 2 guard size and a strong build for a kid so young. Terrific shooter, aggressive on offense, good handle compared to other young wings in the draft. Potential is there for his defense-- he looked for steals more than to stay in front of his man at Duke, but that happens a lot in the NBA too tbh, and his hands are quick and crafty enough that he could be a 1+ SPG guy.

He'll sink some due to some speed concerns, but a guy with his strength and skill doesn't concern me much there. Worst-case scenario, he's an exceptional 3-point shooter/spark plug off the bench. I think he'll go back half of the first round, and I'd love to see him end up on a good team-- I can see him being a guy who develops some bad gunning habits on a bad team but being the perfect piece for a team looking to contend/win playoff games.

Doesn't have Brown's elite-for-all-time athleticism, but he does have elite-for-his-class athleticism, and he's got a better jumper and is a better creator than Brown.

I suspect Allen's success is somewhat conditional on location. I can see him being a guy who sucks on one team but thrives in a role for another. Don't ask him to do *everything.* Do ask him to be a versatile and willing role player on a winner-- he will absolutely *crush* in that position. There's very little he can't do-- except defend consistently, but even then he showed flashes in college. He's also got some length issues for the next level-- but he's quick and explosive, so as long as he doesn't get too lost on iso switches, he has the potential to learn on that end. I wouldn't be surprised by a Dellavedova-esque career reinvention on defense. He's just a smart motherfucker who really wants to win. Most teams could use a guy with his heart.

And yes, he's lost control of his emotions in the past. But put him on the right team, and his fans will fucking LOVE him for his screams, his hard fouls, his dives, etc. (Looking at you, Golden State.)

Worst case scenario, he seems like he should be a fine backup... but I've been busted by small, slow PGs that I fell in love with in college before. I'd take him very end of the first at soonest. Ceiling is a strong bench PG, floor is out of the league in 5-6 years.

He's not a better athlete, but he's a better ballhandler, better defender, better creator for others, and probably a better off-the-dribble shooter (I don't have the numbers, that's eye test). Never been asked to lead a team, but I saw enough *last year* to know he'd be a first rounder. This year's tourney performance just helped seal the deal.

He's a tough motherfucker who lives for the spotlight. He can shoot the lights out, he's crafty as hell, and he's got some real defensive potential. Ceiling is a good starter/4th option on a good team type. Floor is a quality bench guy. I think he'll play for a decade plus.

Should be a stat stuffer. Hits the boards hard, great passer, good shot blocker, terrific hands. Play him at the top of the key or feed him down low. He's short for a "center," but if he's clicking, his versatility and his ability to stretch the defense would give opposing centers fits too.

Doesn't have Diaw's full skill set, but yeah, he's got a lot of potential. Worst case scenario, he's a Swiss Army Knife bench big. Best case, he finds a team that runs an offense that fits his versatility and floor stretching perfectly and becomes a starter that every fantasy player wants on his team.

so here I am

Our need is in the backcourt

but if Bridges is there, you obviously take him, I just doubt he last until 10

and, I'd take Sexton over this guy too...

Checked out some highlights...I think he fits on our team as a slasher/scorer at the 2

but I'm really concerned about his inconsistency

and getting shutdown vs UVA

the guy can obviously jump out of the gym, and finish at the rim

anybody want to project his ceiling with a player comparison?

looks like he would end up being RoCo lite, IMO

It's easy to see where his upside resides, mostly just because he may have a Dennis Smith type vibe where he never got back to full speed/health/comfort last season. He's still a strong athlete and jumper with great positional size and strength. He showed flashes of being brilliant. Scores in a bunch of ways, and he's got a nice stroke from outside...

... but I question a lot. I question the consistency of effort. I question the decision making. I question the basketball IQ. He's got the tools to be great on both ends, but he doesn't really use them. Not impressive handler, not impressive defender, not a good rebounder despite his size and athleticism.

You're basically drafting him and playing him for those nights where he gets hot and can't miss. But he'll cost you in other ways on other nights unless his decision-making, defense, and/or handle improve. Too tempting a prospect to let go lower than, say, 20... but if you think he's a lotto guy, I assume you're assuming that he had Dennis Smith Syndrome and he did what he did last year as a mere shell of what he could be.

Could maybe start if given the right lineup. I have questions about his quickness, and he's also not a great rebounder/post defender for a guy with his height. Yes, he has some potential to become special (how great would it be if he went to Dallas at 33 and learned under Dirk?), but the safer bet is he becomes a floor spacing big who sticks because he's an elite shooter and a high IQ player. I bet skepticism over his ceiling will send him into the high second round, but he'd be of tremendous value there. I can easily see him finding a place and sticking in bench roles for the next 8-10 years.

rebounding is a learned skill for him, as opposed to instinctual or athletic, and i think hes got a lot of room to grow there

expecting him to switch defensively would be bad coaching. doesnt have to be hidden, but hes a hard hedge and retreat big (and Beilein made him good at it)

high release means hes *always* open on a pick and pop

will draw many technical fouls on opponents lol

will outperform at least 1 big drafted in front of him, probably more

He's smart enough and skilled enough to be a PG in the NBA, and he definitely has the shooting and defense to make himself a well-rounded asset. He just needs to put on 15-20 pounds to realistically defend physically in the pros, and he needs to work on his handles in order to create effectively against pro defenders. Liked him more after last season than this season, but I'm not letting one shitty tournament performance totally wash his potential.

I suspect I'm higher on him than most, because while he doesn't have as high as ceiling as some other guys in the mid-first, I'm *way* more sold on how high his floor is and what he brings to today's game. He's got an unstoppable motor, he's a tough defender-- not tall, but his wingspan nears 7 feet, and he uses every ounce of his strength on defense-- and he's a deadly 3-point shooter. Moves the ball well, also moves without the ball well. Versatile-- can defend three positions, can do some of everything on offense.

People are too concerned that he's not a "pure point guard" at his height. Couldn't be less worried about that. It lowers his ceiling, sure, but this kid is an NBA player. Tough bench weapon at minimum.

253. "Better speed, scoring, defense than Brunson or Shamet. Iffy feel tho. "
In response to Reply # 25

It'll be interesting to see where Holiday goes compared to Brunson in particular. Because Holiday, despite being undersized, fits the mold of an NBA backup better than Brunson-- he's a better defender, he's a better scorer, he's faster, he's more of a bulldog.

That said, Holiday is a questionable decision-maker. Seen him routinely make costly turnovers and make poor shot decisions. He's more inconsistent with defensive awareness than Shamet or Brunson, even if he has better tools for the next level there and is the best of all of them when he's locked in. He's just a dude that never seemed to learn how to play in control, how to take care of the ball.

So what do you want in your backup? The aggressive bulldog with better potential? Or the guys who are proven to be smarter, more consistent, and more dependable, while also providing good outside shooting, passing, and defensive effort? Brunson is one of the most accomplished winners of the last two decades of college basketball, a NPOY, and a model of consistency and skill. Holiday has been a gunner on underachieving talented teams, but it's hard to deny that his body and/or style seem more in tune with the NBA, whereas Brunson seems very much the "great college player/so-so NBA player" type on paper.

I suspect Holiday will be picked before those guys due to upside if he learns how to feel the game better. But I also can see him struggling for minutes, because he's not good enough to earn playing time if he's not taking care of the ball. Teams will get impatient. May end up being the type of player who's better around ages 24-25 than he will be the first couple of years. All depends on his development. Don't expect Jrue.

The kid can shoot well (though his free throws numbers are only *okay* for a kid whose main contribution as a prospect is his 3-point shooting). So many red flags though. Turns it over a lot for his position. He's neither long nor strong, so you wonder about his true defensive potential. No handles. Struggles to finish inside. You're basically playing him as a catch-and-shoot 3-point guy. I know he had good measurables at the combine, but he Nyquiled several games I saw him play last year, and I don't really see him being a guy I'd give a first round contract to.

Not PJ in college, PJ today-- just in terms of role and output. Versatile defender, fluid positionally, not a brilliant shooter but good enough to be respected. I don't think teams will ask him to do as much as OSU did unless his shot improves or his handles improve. Instead, he'll look to cut his teeth as a role player and stick around in the league due to his versatility on both ends. He could put up more points on a bad team, but I'd prefer to see him be a 8-and-6 starter on a playoff team.

My one major concern: he wasn't very good until his senior year. Late bloomer, big time. There's the off chance that last year was anomalous and not a sign of permanent growth. If he'd shown this talent over the course of multiple seasons, I suspect he'd be getting drafted higher.

In response to Reply # 30

Risk? Can't shoot. Turnover prone. Occasional tunnel vision on drives. Can't shoot. You're looking at a guy whose basement is one of those players who lingers around the league for years on sheer potential but every time he steps on the court (rarely), people say "what he should've been."

Reward? If you can get this dude a jump shot even on the low end of respectable-- let's say 75% from FT and 34% from 3PT-- there's starter-on-a-good-team potential here. He's unstoppable on the break, he penetrates with ease, he has fantastic measurables/wingspan/speed/etc, he has terrific passing (when he's passing), and he has simply outstanding handles. He's also a strong on-ball defender when he's locked in, really disruptive.

Reality? Probably somewhere in the middle. A guy who will have big individual games, but a guy who will never become a good enough shooter to stay on the court consistently enough to reach potential. However, if the right team locks onto him in the second round and fixes that hitchy shot? There's a reason he was a projected lotto pick out of HS. The upside is higher than any other second rounder will give you, and honestly higher than many players at the end of the first. You just can't give him a guaranteed deal with the risk he carries.

Dude was committed to OAD before he arrived, and if he’d wanted to stay, I strongly suspect a smaller, slower, less athletic, less experienced player with his own jump shot questions would’ve intimidated him much.

If that was the case and he *was* concerned he couldn’t earn minutes in college over Jones, then he may as well just take his ass to Europe now.

Only people who say Duval was run out are the same people who say Jackson was run out— when, of course, Duval didn’t commit to Duke until *after* Jackson’s departure because he was waiting to see what dude was gonna do. KSR readers and the like.

As for going somewhere else, yeah, maybe— tho unless the somewhere else taught him how to shoot or lowered his turnover ratio— neither likely with an even higher usage rate—it wouldn’t have mattered.

He's a hard worker now. But it depends on if he keeps it up. His shot isn't as bad as people say. And he plays with an aggressiveness that you can't teach.

Unquestionably made a mistake returning to school, going from fringe first round to mid-to-late second. The type of guy whose combine work rarely showed itself on the court-- he wasn't good from 2, he wasn't a good defender. Shows tiny flashes now and again, and I agree with RBO that the J isn't irreparably broken... but it's not good. And if he's a wing who's a mediocre shooter than can't create and can't play consistent D, what will he provide other than a good weapon in transition? Has a long ways to go.

I'd take a flier on him mid-to-late second because he has the body and athleticism of a first rounder... but he has to work on everything to become someone who earns consistent NBA minutes at the moment.

He can score in a number of ways and he's a good ball handler. However, he's not really athletic enough or strong enough to beat guys ISO consistently in the NBA imo, and he's a big-time net-minus defender. His best case scenario is to maybe do what TJ Warren has done-- both in college and in the pros-- and put up empty scoring numbers on terrible teams. It's certainly what Robinson did in college. He could be a pretty good second-unit guy on a good team, a sparkplug type, doing something similar to what Nick Young did for Golden State this year.

Admittedly, I didn't get to see him much, but I did like what I saw. Strong, good handles, really good passer. Good rebounder, good defender, good motor. Good size.

He just... can't shoot right now, really. And he's not an A-grade athlete in terms of speed, leaping ability, etc.

He could be an NBA starter or he could be an end-of-bench guy out of the league in 6-7 years. Hard to say without me having seen him more. It was a reach last night, but preseason if you'd said he was going 15th, people may have considered it a steal. For whatever that's worth.

Hate to say it, as I really wanted one of my guys at Golden State, but Evans was a great pick there. He's a tenacious motherfucker who can guard positions 1-3 with ease. One of the best defenders in the draft, with the body and strength to have it translate to the next level. High-IQ player, good passer, terrific outside shooter.

Not anything more than a role player in all likelihood, but he's the type of guy that will shine on a team like the Warriors.

I could see him making a small impact right away and seeing his role grow over the course of his rookie deal. Could be pretty valuable if/when Iggy becomes a salary casualty. That roster is about to get very expensive.

Just saying his name here so that I get on the record. He'll be better than Anthony Bennett. Or to be more specific: he'll be what the Cavs scouts thought Anthony Bennett was going to be when they were smoking whatever it was they were smoking when they picked him #1.

One of the prospects I'm looking forward to in Summer League.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Because he's equally likely to use his considerable offensive talent to develop into a player as he is likely to bomb out of the league in 2-3 years. Dude is a knucklehead off the court and is hopelessly selfish on the court. If he stays out of trouble, matures, learns to pass and stop forcing the issue, becomes a *team player*? Then yeah, obvious potential there. But this guy doesn't have red flags, he's covered in a giant red tarp.
