Hey all!
Well, it's that time of year again. The time when we show you all the works of the wonderful ladies of OKP and their poetry!
This year, not only are we writing poems but we have voted to write about CONTROVERSY! (our own views on: current events, religion, politics, etc. - as long as it's not offensive to a group or person)

SO PLEASE BE ADVISED that you may not agree or like what is said up in here this year!

Also, I wanted to take this time to remember the females of OKP that either have not posted in along time or who no longer post.
So, there will be a section at the bottom for your shot outs to those ladies.

Anyway, *WE HAVE CHANGED SOME RULES THIS YEAR.
THIS YEAR WE'RE HAVING EVERYONE MAKE THEIR OWN NAME/INTRO POST(instead of me doing it) (If you don't know what I mean you can find the previous collabs in the freestyle archives to see how we have done it before)
Confusing? Ok, let me break everything down:

1) To join this collaboration you have to be a female, but it doesn't matter how long you have been here or how many posts you have, etc. You are still very welcome!
2) You have to follow the topic that was chosen by votes. But it doesn't matter how long or short your post is, or how many times you post on that subject.
3) You should respond to other's posts. (Show some love & support for your fellow ladies!)oh and the GUYS TOO!
4) oh, and as I was saying above: BEFORE YOU POST YOUR POEM, create an intro about yourself with YOUR NAME AS THE SUBJECT TITLE. (This will be seperate from your poem post) You can say whatever you want people to know about you. If you can't think of what to say then just CUT/PASTE this into your introduction post:

Hello agaion to all my friends i'm glad you came to play....

My name is marijane on the mic and by the pen but GOD told my parents to name me Banakayi (child of the world). i live life like I was created to with purpose and intent. I've been writing since i coud and i love to prove that femcees are often the most talented and the least recognized. I think that I am known as the OKP most unwilling to conform to any box. i have MANY cultural/racial blends, and no nationality because although I was born in Hayward California, I do not relate to American nationalism. I speak Fench fluently and conversatioal Spanish. i love Durette Tyler and am impressed constantly by my kindred Lauryn Hill. LOVE and like always Keep shining!

i love to write poems using alot of metaphors & vivid imagery, i love to battle-cuz it's fun!
My favorite things to do is make music, travel, and go to concerts/shows, spend time with my son Seneca (8-years-old)
and it will be raising my daughter (due January 5th 2006!)

I started writing poems when i was in fourth grade-i used to watch anne of green gables and those corny shows but they inspired me to dream and like poems
I starting enceeing/battling when I was about 15- my girl flowed (she was older) and i used to sing hooks for her... she told me one day that i should write, so i did
- i smoked an "L" and wrote this song called "Divine Infinity" when I was real high to Wu Tang's "6th Chamber" beat off the GZA "liquid swords" lp---
I can still remember it =)

Anyway, THA RZA was my favorite emcee and he said this line "Fortified with the Essential vitamins and minerals, the sky is my blanket, stuffin clouds in to my pillow"- thus, birthed my emcee name "ESSENTIAL"
I spell it with two z's because i was on AOL at the time and created a username "essential" but i had to change it cuz someone was using it... so i used two z's and it stuck!
.... that was in 1998 daaaaaaamn.. when there was AOL 3.0!

I grew up mostly in NJ, but came to Boston because of college. My majors were Music Production & Engineering and Music Synthesis. Yeah, I am a tech geek, but I was a poet first, then a musician. I wrote my first rhyme at age 15 and haven't stopped since... I do sing more than I rhyme, but I love the freedom of rhyming. Music (esp. Hip Hop and Soul) is my love and passion in life. Nothing makes me happier. Anyway, enough about me... on with the poetry.
This piece is untitled. It's about church controversy. It orignally started out as a rhyme, but then morphed into something else. Here it goes:

Perpetraters, truth haters, political debaters
Looking for the majority favor to keep you in 'gaters.
Compromising, lying, defying the laws of doctrine
droppin' the loot, blockin' the truth, rottin' the fruit
choppin' the root of God's vine
You're blind swine with no spine takin' and rapin' the heart and the mind
Enroaching upon God's time, incurring heavy heavenly fines,
commiting serious spiritual crimes
of idolatry, bribery and extortion to gain fortune
accused of truth distortion and also freedom's abortion
repeated offenses of false pretenses
set up the gucci and colored contact lenses
woe to those who believe in the front and rely on weak defenses
for they won't be able to stand when the TRUE spirit comes against it
reaping what you don't sow
preaching what you don't know
leeching off those who be seeking, beseeching the throne of God
feasting off the anointed, disappointed that yours is a fraud
just a a facade of idle titles and unused bibles
pimping your degree in psychology as biblical theology
for all the blood on your hands, there is no acceptable apology

masquarading, parading, staging the waving of "holy" hands
when you can't even stand in the face of the sun of man
you don't understand
yet content with the stench of the detriment when you falsely represent
pretending to be pure but empty when living waters are so plenty
satisfied to be disguised by lies we hide in shade
absorbing God's rays
not reflecting light, rejecting right, respecting the night neglecting the fight
unsuspecting of plight we have all lost sight
of future vision as we continue to make blind decisions
still in engaging in spiritual masterbation due to intimidation
of the Word's ejaculation
settling instead for artificial insemination
'cuz intercourse without protection gives birth to the resurrection
direction, correction, and perfection
yet we perpetrate in this crooked election of the corrupt
those who "only wash the outside of the cup"
but inside are full of filth
yet holding us with leashes of guilt
pimping their degrees in psychology as biblical theology

so true, I feel the biggest hypocrisy occurs in the church itself- it's pretty scary really...

i'm a cancer. i was inspired to write out of depression as a child, later developed into poetry (due to depression agian) via my first love. i've learned through my writings here that poetry doesn't have to be soul crushing but sometimes the best pieces of poetry that i've written are. i love my friends, bar hopping, boys. i'm in search of experiencing life in its myriad directions. and i'm constantly crushing my way through life. i learn hard play hard work hard and sometimes i often feel hard. if life wasn't so busy and full of shit, i'd fall in love on a daily basis. but alas, no time for that.

Personal Info: I am a petite, black woman with a short haircut reminiscent of Halle Berry and Toni Braxton rolled up into one!! My writing style is interesting...basically it's based upon my mood. My sign is a Cancer/Leo. So I ebb and flow with the tide, chile'!! Never know what I'm about to say until I say it. I discovered poetry when I was 12-years-old. I would write cutesy things, flowers, clouds and love. Everything rhymed, then one day I just stopped all of that and my "style" if you will emerged. My mom and brother, inspired me to write. But the stronges influence was my 7th or 8th grade teacher Mr. May. We had a writing assignment and I wrote an explanatory poem of you will of my Wedding Fantasy Barbie Doll!! LOL He loved it but I was embarrassed to read it in front of the class. Underneath my BIG MOUTH, I'm really shy!! And I have a love for all things, both great and small. Hello all! Lovely to be with you today, tonight, and always! I've been comming to the boards for sometime now. I started writing when I was about, um maybe 9 or 10. I had lots to write about. Lots of angst, darkness, crazy stuff going on in my home. all kinds of goodies. I've been exploring my poetry and writing over the past few years, expirimenting with different styles and flow patterns. I love poetry about love, or lack there of. I think my poetry is best described as shakesphere -meets hiphop -meets ecentric urban- meets earthy goddess gypsy. Lets, see. I guess you could call me a bohemian, I have a ridiculous view of love and life in general. I work with children on the daily, so I have a tendency to speak very softly...tendency to mother a lot....tend to also want every one to "play nice." ...Very traditional, old school kind of lady now that I think about it...Lets get to the writing!

Your smile is always hiding
from me
always nervous to shine bright
it sadeness me
to watch
as you frown
only to
to stop your lips from curling upward
while i am watching you
out of the corner of my eye

this will never do
I love to laugh and smile!

when i see you next I will smile
a big
silly
grin for you
maybe grab your ears
kiss you on the nose
and blow smoke out your eyes

Then,
you will not be able to give me
the sudo cold shoulder
you pretend to give

we can shadow each others' smiles
count each others teeth
and compare notes...
all while people stare
and watch

background: i've been around on and off since 1999 when I was 14, orginally as the artist known as wolfie. my writing has been influenced by my upbringing and my education at boarding school and now at college.
i'm a history major and an art history minor, i've begun to dabble in french and i work as an interning curator. right now i'm working with 19th century silhouettes and mourning paintings. i love soul music and hip-hop, photography, history, art, europe, literature, freshman orientation, the honor code, and, of course, poetry.
i've been influenced heavily over the years by the wonderful artists on this board. i've been a bit of a ghost lately, but i love this collab so i've returned!

We are all of out misdecisions and misjudgements:
Jumble and junk discarded and used
Down for the count and abused.
Indecised into adulthood
Forced in like my birthright
To give life.

To take life.

We are one in the same,
They shout,
destined to hell for our mistakes,

We are misjudgements.

We are unfit to live,
Says the young boy, scared in the shadow of his father,
A baby holding pictures of babies that never breathed.

We are hit by pickets,
damned before our life began.

We denied the right to life before We ever gave
before conception ever occurred in our wombs
for the wrongs never commited

We are all the same.

We are defined as faceless babies cast aside.


there is a story behind this piece. a few weeks ago, myself and most of the greek women on my campus were acousted outside our homes by pro-life protestors. we were being accused and abused for an act that the majority of us never committed.
i was also told that i was going to go to hell for getting an education, that was fun.

Personal Info: super mixed breed ..claiming humanity. Mother of an 8 yr old son who carry's the light so strong that his teachers are not sure what to do with him. This was my experience growing up in the public school system. We both share the type of creative fire that makes us want to be heard...want to express our concepts of truth...want to be funny and enjoy life...Being pressed to be quiet made the fire grow hotter and the juice of creativity boiled over into poetry. I began writing when I was 12 religously...though I do have great memories of being 6 and writing letters to my mom when I was angry with her Funny, I also remember spelling my stepdads name with a lower case B for Bill because I thought that starting out a name with a lower case letter was one of the biggest offences any one could give. REVOLUTION! Ahh..Through my journey I have revelations of beautiful and saddening things. Revelations of deep, powerful and Godlike things. My friends thought it funny that I would often start out sentences with "Hey guys, I had a revelation last night" So Bam! on stage I go by Mc Revelation....I write poetry when I am super charged by some great experience. Screenwriting has become another wonderful form of creativity that I am having the joy of learning..Coming to this board has been all about timing. Okay Player called me out one night at 3am when a poem jumped into a dream I was having. I've checked out the boards before...Big supporter of the artists...SHout out to the Lovely Jean Grae!!!...and the Fab DJ Bazarro!!!.......So here I am ....love the upliftment I see going on with the Okay Family.. Isn't it wonderful raising a son?....My son is a hunk of a child (he fits in my tennis shoes!) and is bound to be a great man...I love the youth!!

...Being an outlet for this type of poetry is challenging and I appreciate the kindness and uplifting welcome.
