"The Roots Pre Grammy Jam Session @ Key Club (REVIEW)"
Sun Feb-11-07 09:38 AM by 15

wow, this is my first time attending their jam session, and ive already decided that i need to go every year for the rest of my life.

so they had a jam session which took place after their show at the gibson amphitheater.

THE FAMILY opened up with some great music for about half hour, and then the Roots hit the stage about 1:30am. It was basically just one big jam session as the title suggested, with the horns/tuba section as well. Wasn't really a structured show or anything. Jurnee Smollet was cohost with Black Thought for the night. CHRISETTE MICHELLE came out first, the girl who sings on Lost Ones (jay-z) and that new Nas single. She did an interpretation of If I aint Got You (alicia keys), she sang real well, and damn shes fine. Next, SKILLZ did a "2006 wrap up". TALIB KWELI came out, did "Move Somethin" and "Get By". DAVE CHAPELLE came out to introduce some of the guests. INDIA ARIE also made an apperance and participated in the jam session too with a flute, and sang some songs. and then when India was performing, MATISYAHU came out and started doing his thang. Then the leader singer from FALL OUT BOY jammed with the band and did "Shes a Bad Mama Jama". QUEEN LATIFAH arrived on stage next and did "U.N.I.T.Y'. BROTHER J came out to rep X Clan and did a few tracks. The highlight of the night was ANITA BAKER coming out and jammin with the band along with India Arie. And of course, BLACK THOUGHT joined his band for a couple songs throughout the night, including "Don't Feel Right" with MAIMOUNA YOUSEFF, and "The Seed 2.0".

The best part of all this is that I was very first row, leaning against the stage. so i had a perfect view to watch the entire session.

Sorry, didnt include too many details. too tired, will post some more tomorrow. maybe some other OKP's can tell more.

Shout out to the Roots and the Okayplayer family for throwing on a great show. Hope to see it again next year.

I was extremely elated that the opening act this year for the Pre-Grammy Jam was the 20th anniversary of one of the most musically and lyrically amazing acts from the Prince era. The Family had only performed in concert twice before, and with the encouraging of our fearless leader, ?uestlove.. they opened the show with a few of their signature hits.. including Screams of Passion & Nothing Compares 2 U. St. Paul, Susannah, Jerome, Jellybean... all the original members made this reunion the icing on the cake for me. Every year The Roots outdo themselves with this Jam Session... I'm just happy I got a chance to witness both Jill, Lupe and Talib hit the stage at the Amp with the crew before things got really nuts at the Key Club. I swear... If I hadn't seen it for myself, I would have never believed the stories of The Legendary Roots Crew doing the Bob Dylan cover "Master's of War." The JDilla tribute was of course" magnifico!" and made me cry with joy. This year was better than usual. Thank you Ahmir for taking care of my friends and I!

Yea I spoke to Kitten for a split second and I must say you looked very nice last night and were in the right place for some real music. Didn't know the Avena Lee chick was an actress. Saw her too.

Why did I have to explain to this chick who The Family was? She leaned over to me and was like "who are these people? i just dont get it. well atleast the music is good." I wanted to snatch that lamenent off her neck and ask her to leave...

Thank you... I was in Blondie mode last night. I get that way when I'm drunk on music. The Roots always put on a good show.. and the concert before hand was unbelievable. Anytime I get to see them perform I'm right there... Yeah, lots of youngsters are totally lost when it comes to the 80s Prince Protege group. They were only like - amazing. As Ahmir said last night... "this was one of the most amazing albums of all times." I'm looking forward to Common at the HOB on VDay. And yes... I'll have lots of single porn chicks in tow that night too. I can usually be found at most live shows in L.A. Hip Hop's my drug and I'm totally addicted...

You're Welcome...I'm starting to think I should have went to the Concert instead of going too Clive Davis' party first. The decisions we make. Hmmmm. What did I miss? I used to always run into Kitten and V. Blue out and about, glad to see you're out enjoying yourself... L.A. gets soo many great shows that I dont think they appreciate it anymore. Plus, industry crowds can be so fickle. I think only time the Crowd really responded was introductions, anita, and latifah. Com @ HOB should be good. I thought he would rock last night. LOL @ Thought: "My man had to Gooooo, Go, Go, Go."

The Clive party is always hot.. but somehow, I always manage to miss that in favor of the Roots party. The event has outgrown the Key Club... the fire marshall's were there before the band even took the stage - making navigating from the main floor to the upstairs VIP atrocious. Not to mention the Nazi-like rent-a-cops manning the stairwells... I was standing behind Super Kwe while this guy told him that no one, not even the artists, could go from the stairwell into the VIP to the tables. Duh! SuperKwe remained calm, cool yet forthright as usual... until a security guard that recognized who was being declined entry was standing there with this numbnut with a walkie talkie. SuperKwe was kind enough to insure that a few of Dave Chapizzle's guests made it back on the other side where they belonged. True gentleman.

That's what makes this event worth it for me is that you can tell its a labor of love for these people. You get an opportunity to rub shoulder with people that you admire and love and they in return show you love... Its so laid back that you forget that you're a fan of their work... and in my case, that some of them are fans as well. I try to make sure I always invite a few friends to shows when I can so I can give them a bar for all other shows and events to come after that... The Roots put on a good show.. consistently. Why go elsewhere when you never know what you'll get? As Thought said during the concert, "You're listening to the best sound system in the world right here!"

I concur.

What'd you miss at the concert?? My personal fav was a Bob Dylan cover the band performed of the song "Master's of War." I had to throw up the Black Fist for that... it made me cry... having lost friends to this idiotic war. You missed the J Dilla Tribute... growing up outside the "D" I always felt a connection to him... and having lost my first Love's mother to Lupus I was affected on a different level by his death. Talib ran out on stage for Get By, Lupe kick pushed out on stage to do a full set, ending with Jilly from Philly coming out in these kick ass silver wood bottom platforms for "DayDreaming" followed by her own set of both old standards and new material. Of course, the opportunity to have Thought and Jill doing "You Got Me" together was not missed, (although seeing Jill and Erykah do the song as a duet on NYE at the HOB for my Birthday was hard to beat...)

The Brad 7 (or was it Brass 7,) made up of horn player JB (I want to say Jeffery Bradshaw... someone correct me here if I'm wrong on the name,) and 4 other winds, including by JBs introduction, "The sexiest Tuba Player in America, aka Tuba Gooding, Jr.," kicked ass with Questlove on a secondary set of drums at the front of the stage left (or was that right?) instead of his normal throne at the top of the stage. The crowd went crazy as the Tuba Player, the guitarist and Ahmir busted out their own little piece of musical heaven...

Did you miss out? Yeah... Of course you did. Prioritize next time...

Aww... Thanks for the Love. If you want, check out my full confession on my love for Hip Hop along with my own personal little review of the concert and the jam session at http://blog.myspace.com/sinnamonlove. It gets a little dirty towards the end... but its a fun, prolific, sensual read... I'd like to think it is at least.

for giving the tix away. I saw a line for press so hopefully I can get on that next year and cover it in-depth for the site....

Some highlights...
Anita...talk about out of the blue! She's so effortless.

Boo to India Arie not knowing when the crowd want more Anita!

LOL at Brother J bypassing the band and shouting out "Sir Jinx, throw on that CD!"

Skill doing "Nod Factor" with the Roots!

Thought thinking Common was coming out then realizing he wasn't and started singing along to Com's Go, "I guess common had to goooo, goooooo"

I saw Cinnamon and her girls there, I can vouch for her, she's STAYS out at live shows in LA. I've never been to a Digital Underground show out here I haven't seen her at.

Oh God... Talib @ the El Rey. Geez! How long ago was that! I remember catching Black Eye Peas there back in the day too. I love smaller venues because you really get a feel for the artist and their passion for the music they produce. I caught Kweli at this spot on Sunset last year... (I want to say it was the Whiskey?) It was the first time I'd seen him do Black Girl Pain live.. Dope, Dope, Dope... Rock the Bells last summer was insane. I took my 9 year old and she was standing on top of the speakers rocking out with her hand in the air like she was leading the crowd. She loves all music. much like her mom, and is the lead singer in a rock band... (She does Beatles, U2, Abba and other classic covers but also original music,) but I'm proud to be able to give her a solid foundation in the culture that she sprang from - and will likely be influenced by throughout her life. Its wild watching her sing "I Try," getting ready for school. Lol! That's powerful right there!

I just added a mini Anita Baker clip - waiting for youtube to finish processing so it might not be live yet...
i was a lil hesitant to upload the clip bc she didn't really sing long enough due to... oh well.

note to instrumentalists learning new instruments: bring your A game when u come to the jam session stage please. thanks.
