"IF YOUR WITHIN EAR SHOT OF MY VOICE, COME"
Thu Jan-18-07 11:15 PM by rainbowchild

There always will be an 'after the fact antagonistic remnant' that will all of a sudden emerge out of the woodworks when something that supposedly looked good on paper (Like the Washington Redskins organization *ducks*) came together, but failed to yield the desired results.

PLEASE, in your great foresight, help me to be cognizant of why you 'knew' this collaboration between the two (Dr.Dre & D'angelo) would'nt work. I'm sure we all don't want to hear about it after the fact, for all you 'puesudo prophets/musicians/soothsayers' in our midsts this fine day.

Also, i wasn't intending on refuting anything (as this is all opinions) or chase a nonsensical argument (lesson board style) or be called out my own dag gone name even, i just wanna know what you 'allegedly' saw.

Lastly, if you read a response & get the sense that someone is trying to call you out or bait you into some petty catfight, just respond to the poster with MISS ME WITH THAT.

Ok, who first?

I don't really have high hopes for this Dr.Dre/D'angelo pairing... Dr.Dre just seems too structured, like they're gonna go in and build instead of create (does that make sense at all?)...

Personally, i'm Pro Dr. Dre involvement. Anti Questlove, but i'm all for the Affirmative Dr. Dre issue.

Just based off the fact that D'angelo is in the process of shedding a large portion of his physical weight off, alone, will redeem most of you guys back over to him.

I believe that both Dr. Dre & D'angelo will have to step their game up to new heights, as the majority of us have witnessed all that Hip Hop and Neo Soul, a combination of the two, has had to offer us and we are no longer impressed.

it seems Dre puts his best work into himself, and those who will generate money for him... so him taking on someone's project who isn't even in the same fan bracket as him seems odd to me.. the only reason i'm lookin kinda optimistic is because I know Dre is a huge parliament/old school funk fanatic, so this album could have some grit to it.

I just feel that most of Dre's stuff is too sonically 'polished' for D'angelo's voice.

You know how a lot of Dre's beats tend to have a high-end to them (in terms of EQ...a crispness, if you will) that seem to cut through the track? I just feel D'angelo's muddy, mush-mouthed vocals will get lost in Dre's production - the 2 won't blend well.

It will be interesting to see if Dre strictly lays down BEATS ONLY (meaning no music, just beats) for D'angelo to lay his own music over, or if Dre is going to provide full tracks for D to write melody lines over.

If it's the latter, I'll be pissed...that's for walking jokes like Nelly Furtado, Pussy Cat Dolls, Justin Timberlake and every other hack 'artist' who buys a Timbaland or Pharell beat, puts some shitty 'in the moment' lyrics over the top and release it as 'their song'. (Me? Bitter at today's music scene? Nah...)

I didn't listen to the Snoop/Dre/D track more than 3 times...shit did not do it for me.

My goodness, that's the lane that D'angelo should've stayed in, like Brown Sugar! He sounded sincere and was at his absolute best under those textures, btwn Brown Sugar & Voo, imo.

I think 15 thought that Brown Sugar was way too polished, so btwn the two of them, they went 180 degrees from his intial sound, which resulted in a mechanical sounding pairing, because every Neo Soul album that came out post Voo & Mama Gun's, is a much better listen.

Dre's polish, is far grittier than anything the Soulquarians could cook up and yes i agree that 'Imagine' is a very weak track, considering what Dre has done in the past but let's not overlook that that's something that Snoop Dog wanted. D'angelo may have felt honored to be considered as they could've went with Nate Dogg or many other vocalists. They could've pulled some no named gospel cat from any church to lay something down.

I didn't casually dismiss the whole Voo cd.

The demonic overtones, i personally don't ever need in my life, i have enuff complications & anxieties of my own, that i would never bring that stuff knowningly, into my home. (The chants throughout the cd, The Devil's Pie, The Root, a sound about an incantation that could possibly come upon a person, the photography in the little booklet of the Hatian practice) you have got to be kidding me, or smoking crack.

Didn't meant to derail our overwhelming discssion here.

Mark King's tone, cuts through the mix very well. It's very 'treblely' and he needs that to articulate all those fast 16th note slap patterns & triplets.

"He sounded sincere and was at his absolute best under those textures, btwn Brown Sugar & Voo, imo."

I definitely feel you on that, but at least the loops and beats D used on Brown Sugar were a little dirty (like in Alright or Smooth) and seemed to carry the music he put on top perfectly. I dunno if Dre can achieve that same feel.

I was not a huge fan of Voodoo, especially since it took 5 years to surface. The songs seemed half-baked to me, more jam sessions with lyrics rather than thought-out compositions, but to each his own. A lot of people live and die by Voodoo, but Brown Sugar just seemed to have a more universality to it...you could listen to it while drinkin', fuckin', drivin', conversin'...Voodoo was more of a 'hole yourself up in your room and veg' type of record.

Plus Voodoo's dark undetones were such a stark contrast to Brown Sugar that I just didn't vibe off it as much as needed to.

I will never embrace that record because of it's implications. (spiritual)

If i wanted to give 15 the benefit of the doubt, i could just look at Mama's Gun but therein his style of drumming runs parallel to goood r&b. (as i would like to hear it)

15's specialty seems to be hip hop/rock which is what the Roots offer.

It seems that if you know how to manipulate the pentatonic scale, that's all you really need for fills.

Pino is playing that Fender Jaguar bass. Sounds like he got flatwound strings on there.

Let him stick with The Who and leave the R&B stuff to the brothers, lol. (Yes i know Elizondo is Mexi-Amercian..geesh)

You a devout Dilla fan i see. (your signature)

I just never had an ear for his sound. I'm not familar with every thing released or produced by him. (Slum, Frank & Dank, etc)

I am aware that he has a massive cult following (not in a derogatory sense of the term) and inspired & still does, many, many people.

Your take on the abscence of his Soulquarian sound would be insightful to hear.

penta-tonic scales...I heard that at school one day, I thought is was mixed alcoholic beverage!!! I'll stick to playing the 2 and 4!!
flatwounds for life...don't play bass myself but if I did...it would have flatwounds on it! I read somewhere that Pino "uses roundwounds with the who"...he "should" play more rock...OR he should call up Paul Young to see if he needs any fretless stuff!! you think when Pino got married his wife was wearing red?? GOD I MISS THE 80's!! lol

What are your thoughts on D'angelo's new direction (the little we know about it) and being Soulquarian free. (as far as we are aware)

The Roots seemed to be in Asia somewhere, Poyser on the West coast & Pino touring in Europe.

I voiced my 'opinion' about 15, not to cheapshot or undermine his efforts (as that's a cowards move) and i appreciate him being man enough for not going on the defensive and subsequently slaying me real good but rather permitting me freedom of speech on his website. That's a good man.

as I mentioned in the "OTHER" D' post about him working with Dre...CAN'T WAIT! let's see what happens! I'm a positive guy so if there is good music being made by D in conjunction with Dre: WHY NOT!
BUT! as much as I'm looking forward to hearing new D stuff, I'd rather hear him make music with quest, poyser and pino...it's a groove thing, I just like it! But hey I also read all the problems around the whole voodoo record, and I could understand if they wouldn't go through that again!
NOT that I was there...or have the inside scoop, but after reading about it you might say you have an opinion about the whole thing!
Allthough it was nice hearing quest say that those 5 years "we're some of the best in his career" ('95>>>'00)...

It just a real blessing to hear that D'angelo is getting his feetback back underneath him again.

Even if what (Dre, D'angelo, Rapheal Saadiq, or whoever else) come up with doesn't nessicarily satisfy us, at least we got another record out of this man. Along the way, i'm sure Dre will reinforce work ethic to D'angelo.

Rez, i seriously doubt Dre will accept no shows to the studio, writters block, or whatever else he would pull on a 'lesser producer'. I'm sorry, just don't see it going down like that.

If you can not only suceed but flourish working under this guy, working with D'angelo ain't nothing.

Dre has been itching to have a vehicle to tap into that funky Parliament side of himself that's been sitting there for years and D'angelo is a throwback to that sound.

Old Dre beats do have alot of the synth and synthbass things going on! Though in my opinion p-funk is all about bpm's! its the "inbetween" funk! I'm listening to "greatdayindamonin" rightnow and it also has this...indescribeble feel to it because of this bass sound i'm diggin'!!! allthough the booklet says it is charlie hunter is sure sounds like one of those old analog moog synths! (this is a track on voodoo, which I know is not your fav...but I'm just talking synthwise!) Also a track which I hear Dre's inspiration is "flashlight" strings, synthbass and all the other bleeps going on! I'm still a student of funk though...
It doesn't have to be difficult funk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qpl17Uqs7Bs I'd like to hear D sing over a beat like this!

DR DRE (n.)- greatest producer OF ALL TIME

lol.

If Dre can capture that 70's feel and update it for 2007/8/9 then the onus is on D'angelo to match that same intensity and not come lazy like all were saying how Jay Z did, over that Show Me What You Got piece.

Trust me Rez, D'angelo don't want to get caught lapsing and have 50 cent coming around the studio offering his form of 'encouragement' about his feelings on D'angelo.

I say that because it's looks really competitive out there and if Dre can get in a zone for D'angelo's album and pop some serious hypnotic grooves off, don't you think that 50 and them would want that same treatment for they albums? Dre can get very soulful with those beats. I guaruntee you, that that's what D'angelo is pushing for out of Dre, it would only make sense. Maybe D'angelo is signed to Aftermath now and got a release from Virgin? Hmmm.

Didn't Jay Z & Diddy both put Show Me What You Got on there albums? Is it that hard out there?

Funny though cuz if you listen to Dre's latest tracks he did for both Snoop and Jay-Z...it's POLISHED as FUCK! And I just don't hear that with D in mind! So he better have Elizondo bring in his P-Bass and Qtron and bring some Moogs, vocoders and a linndrum and we're about to witness something dope!
I hope they let "The Dragon" mix it at the Lady!!! cuz of ALLLL the albums out there....NOOOOONEEEE I say NOOOOOONEEEE has come close to Voodoo! (sorry I know you prefer Brown Sugar!)

Snoop and Jay Z take whatever Dre concocts. At least with D'angelo being a musician he knows how to embellish, take away, or just plain leave alone, if he ain't feeling a certain track.

And yes, Jay's Lost Ones & Snoop's Imagine almost are the same groove.

I still perfer Dre's polish over having D'angelo and the Soulquarians butcher his sound & mix 15's drums way up front. The Dilla sound is very amatuerish.

I would love to hear D'angelo over some lush cinematic productions.

Your ear seems to be able to appreciate a lot more than mines, as i couldn't stand his last album, or Erykahs, Mama's Gun.

You mentioned that Erykah loved the rhythmn section of 15 & Pino (Pino can get down, as i see him hitting John Entwhistle's lines with ease & i've read about his amazing 80's fretless work) but i saw that situation as Erykah & Common being so inraptured with each other and having 15 in the middle of their love triangle. Mama's Gun ain't do it for me, but Erykah's Live Album is the standard in groove, amongst bass players. She hit that joker out the park. It opens up with bassist hitting that Miles Davis lick and with her background singers going 'Baduuu Badu Baduuu Badu' The she off and running.

Polish ain't all bad, as Maxwell's productions are lush (Dance wit Me)but have an inherant funkiness to them.

Rez, you and i both are gonna see hear some nice things this year, as we have Maxwell on the horizon, Raheem Devaughn, Musiq & D'angelo and whoever else may come forth.

I said "she seems to like the 15/Elizondo rhythm section!" no biggy! I have yet to hear them perform together! but my guess is that they rock just as bad as the 15/Pino combi! 15 being a great hiphop/rock drummer and all...
Feel you on the Maxwel case though! It's more a "slick" sexy vibe opposted to the voodoo "gritty" sexy vibe! You wouldn't setle for a mix of the 2?
Have you heard of a guy named Lewis Taylor? I think you'd like it...dude got serious skills! Sorta the white british D! you should check the song "bittersweet"! Ill bassline, real dark vibe until the chorus...it opens up and gets this motownish vibe...and the end is even more impressing with it's Beach Boys esque background vocals! Dude composes, produces and performs the whole record by himself!
A personal fav...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWYGiIpR5kU arrangement is truelly magnificent!

Sorry for misquoting you. I just would love to see D'angelo away from anything 15 related for a good 4 albums or so, imo.

Rez, i was watching this nature show on lions yesterday & they focused on two cubs they were born from a brother & sister lion that had mated. The concern was that the cubs would grow up and have all types of internal problems because of the genes being to similar from the mother & father lion, which were brother & sister.

Follow me Rez, when i think about the Soulquarians and how they only intermingled with each other, how they cut 3 'allegedly prolific' albums in three different rooms of the same studio around the same time, and so much other nonsense that i saw outta their union, what seemed to of have happened, is that they imploded internally. Almost like an incestous relationship that bears children and the genetic deformities that result.

What we got from the Soulquarians were rogue cd's that had great potential but didn't quite sit right. You loved D & Erykah's ones from the Soulquarian era, cool, your ears are obviously bigger than mines. You can appreciate more. I can't.

Hmmm, i'm going to look into this Lewis taylor guy.

It's cool...I'm not one to be campaigning for someone else's music! And it's true that they only did make 3 really good albums imo...with a few added tracks to other artists cd's...
I just guess it's nearlly impossible to have so many minds going in the same direction for a long period of time...seems only natural that things will implode or explode!!! what you "thought" all had in common seems to be growing apart as time passes by, and well...that's just life I guess.
And maybe you're right to say that we just have to leave those times behind and go forward...D seems to be doing that! The Roots are continually evolving, Common did a 180 with Be, Dilla is no longer with us so, Erikah is...well I don't know what she's up to!? Life continues!

Personnaly...I'm still finding my way around music, discovering old and new stuff and absorbing as much as possible to try and educate myself, the thing is with my generation, fewer people actually listen to music music...let's just call it a "media brainwash" and it disturbs me to see good music go to waist!

Maybe I'm just ramblin' but that's just the way I feel about it right now...if I ask someone if they know a song by the Beatles they're like "WHO?"...WTF! ok so maybe they've heard about them...but they sure as hell don't know who Brian Epstein or George Martin is, and maybe they know 1 song...SAD don't you think?

Anyway who cares what MOI has to say...

I see you like a lot of George Porter from The Meters stuff (as he do have that P Bass of his growling all the time). I read from the captions underneath the video, that that was Charlie Hunter in that clip as well. The drummer was grooving like a mother as well as the horn players and keyboardist was getting theres too.

One thing about music, as Bob Marley said 'when it hit you/you feel okay'.

In the comments section underneath of the clip it lists Charlie Hunter as one of the musicians. I 'assumed' that he was 'The Voodoo Charlie Hunter' but i must've been mistaken, as that's just a common name, my bad. 2 different Charlie's.

I think Maxwell might've been a bad example of funk that don't have to have that analog, archaic sound, but could be just as funky being clean. You sound German Rez and i don't know if this video made it big enough over in Germany (if you are in fact German, there i go reading into something way to far)

I like the maxwell unplugged album best, nice strings...
Another artist I am quiet impressed with is a singer called Dwele...if you listen closely you can hear J Dilla's infuence (beatwise)! it's not to dark so I think you might like it Bow!

Dwele is cool, sort've monotonous, but he stays in his own lane, sorta speak.

The 1994-1998 D'angelo, in his prime has spoiled me. (or shall i say, my ears) To me he was at his purest before Neo soul came into being a retro ish hot commodity so a lot of the cats that have come after him, don't ring out as being authentic, for some reason. Execption being Maxwell.

I like the Stones too. They use Daryl Jones as their touring Bass player at times. He endorses Lakland Basses, in fact, he has his own signature bass like Pino.

Dwele does have a bit of a monotone style...allthough I apriciate his music more for the beats and his freaky melodie/chords with him singing over them! The sound of his voice isn't that special!

I get what your saying...before neosoul everyone was doing straight up beats nothing special, after neosoul movement everyone was testing the boundries of where they could go with playing sloppy or just screwing with meters! To be honest after the soulquarians I never heard it being done in an honest way! More like a "copy/paste" way!

I don't think/hope D will ever lose that sloppyness in his timing! He did that on Brown Sugar (Crusin') so that's just him! If I had to choose between the two I'd say they would not be comparable...Brown Sugar is the musician album with great seperate songs...Voodoo is a story album, as it seems to take you on a "soul train" from A to B in 74 minutes!

I Appreciate Both!

It looks really easily what he does (i took a music theory class back in 2003 at a community college and found myself in a classroom full of gospel guys with their cornrowed braided hair and they could make our classroom piano sing, they had good ears but i guess they wanted to learn the reasonings behind why they did what they did) and stylistically D'angelo put his imprint on 'that particular look' and behind the meter approach to playing, in the late 90's.

Unlike Maxwell's heavenly sounding voice and the lush harmonies that Maxwell's people (Sweetback) carve out for him, D'angelo's range is easier to copy, therefore artist's seem to test him out more, imo. You can't copy Maxwell like that, his range is scary good and it sounds like he can sing up 3 octaves high.

I felt D'angelo more though, as for some reason his first one hit me in the gut, took the wind out've me.

It's not like D'angelo was Herbie Hancock on keys, with the voice of Marvin Gaye.

D'angelo's talent lied in his simplicity for me. He's the type of typical gospel cat that may not know 2 things about theory but got 'feel' like a mug.

A person's 'feel' is almost impossible to copy. It's almost like someones fingerprint, no 2 can be identical, similar yes.

D'angelo made you feel 'cool' when you listened to him. It wasn't just me but everybody everywhere said the same thing.

First of I just wanted to say that its dope to interact with someone who obviously knows and understands music as an artform rather than just something that other people see as "wallpaper"! It's funny but I usually enjoy the extra behind the scenes footage on a concert dvd more than the actual concert itself! I'm more into finding out what the artist goes trough in everyday life! or just seeing how things go down in the studio and so on...it's always good to read and learn new things!

The funny thing with voodoo for me personal was that in the beginning "I didn't get it"! I pretty much liked 2 songs at first, after about a year I check it out in it's entirety and I finally got it! With brown sugar it we're just really good songs on an album!

I don't know if you checked out the clip of D performing with Marcus, Eric, Steve, David and Gene, but the way he phrases the melody on the rhodes with such ease and how he plays with the endless amout of sounds you can get out of it is just amazing, on top of that he sings like a mile behind the beat and still its in time! To me THAT is what gives me the instant headnod from the moment he lays down the first chords! Maxwell has this one song, a cover and it was original by Kate Bush, now ok it's not what I typically would like, but the dude NAILS it!!! I think its just a matter of taste if you like the more slick soul artist or the grittier ones! I mean Marvin also did some slick songs!!!

I prefer this (check out what he does with the count of!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cD29UhZ2yE

In response to Reply # 62

Now that's what D'angelo (Pre Questlove era) reminds me of, to a tee. When he was at his best.

Rez, my parents were stationed (military) in California in the (70's, i was born in 74') and my dad has told me that Sly was a radio personality that would play his keyboard on the air with whatever song that was playing.

What i like about those simple songs is the beautiful harmonies underneath, not just the funky bass work, the funky guitar work, the funky horns section, but moreso the harmony dictated by the keyboard. The clip up above of Andrew Gouche (the guy in the red baseball hat and red shirt) is good, not because of hs slaping technique (it's get old man) but the harmonies that the keyboard is laying down.

Those techniques are cool (slapping, 16thnote playing, muting notes)but get tiresome to look at and only seem to impress other bass players and drummers, not the average joe.

The Zaiwnful clip is straight but that stuff goes over my head, as it too much i'm trying to take in. The bass player is nasty and seems to be catching every fill the drummer is throwing out there.

In response to Reply # 63

Like we were saying, trying to 'cop' another persons feel is hard. Their rendition sounded so watered down and in their own right those musicians (Marcus, Eric, Sanborn, Dangelo) are so massive. They would slay a simple song like that all night by reharmonizing it, funking it up, jazzing it out, throwing every modal & theoritical concept at it.

When i hear 15 & them trying to run down a James Brown song, it almost is embarrissing to listen to it, as you ain't never going check James Brown band. Don't even play ya self.

15 is massive, but again, trying to cop another's feel is a hard thing to do.

I think every young musician wants to be like his heroes only time tought me that the only thing that matters is your own identity! And thats even harder to accomplish! I think it works best to pick what inspires you from your heroes and make it your own...not meaning to copy but to take the essence of what they are doing and give your own take about it! I've found it more interesting to know all the basics of different styles whether it being rnb jazz or latin...its all linked in a way but i feel everyone needs to know WHERE it comes from!

You have the cats that want to the best in what THEY do...I'd rather take the rest to THE BEST we can be together! Not meaning you shouldn't be educated propperly!! cuz that only makes it easier to execute what you want to play!

I don't know if you know these cats? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuBAfPi1cVo they seem to doing well? they are ALL heroes of mine! and I don't play all the instruments!

I've heard of them, both played with D'angelo as well, Hidadalgo on Spanish Joint, i think, and Gadd on the New Years Eve Special with D'angelo back in 1999 with Sanborn Eric & Marcus.

I wonder why Eric & D'angelo never collaborated much after that?

D'angelo recently came back from Eric Clapton's drug treatment facility in Antigua, as i read here.

Marcus and D'angelo would work, well, Marcus & anyone would be superb. Marcus & Meshell N'D geocello worked., Marcus & Rapheal Saddiq worked. Marcus & Luther Vandross worked, Marcus & Bill Withers worked. (Watching you Watching me)

I guess we'll just wait and see what D'angelo and the good Dr. blesses us with.

Their musical history between the two of them alone is rich, and should yield some intruging results.

I'm quite sure you'll will be getting it too.

That would make too much sense Rez. (If D'angelo answered questions about himself) Stop being so rational brother, lol.

I think if Dre said i want you to go and humble yourself and address your fans that have held it down for you, while on your self imposed hiatus, then and only then, i could see him do something like that.

Sometimes, i think in D'angelo's mind, he's living out how Prince conducted himself in the 80's, with the quirky behaviours and not giving interviews (Prince ain't hardly like that at all now, as he's God fearing)

I guess it's supposed to make D'angelo more mysterious, lol. Hey, that same gimmick bit our boy Lewis Taylor in the behind, in that you want to appear unaffected and difficult to reach, fine, we'll just fileshare all your stuff, which is a career killer!

and we went real early to the movies to get our tickets one time (she wanted to see the movie where Jennifer Lopez kept getting abused by her husband, it was called Enough)

We had about 1 hour before it started so we went to this little cafe (it's closed down now) on Route 1 in Alexandria Virginia to get something to eat. In there it was a live 3 piece band that consisted of a drummer, a guitarist and this little pakistian man on a 4 string p bass.

I wasn't paying much attention to them (the band) but somehow the way in which the guy was playing the bass, smacked me dead in my face. I couldn't stop thinking about how good he made me feel playing it all night. Rez, tt wasn't like he was doing Jonas Hellborg runs or Jaco licks, just simple root 5 octave things, locking in with the kick drumm, sitting in the pocket.

Around that same time i read that D'angelo & 15 loved Lewis Tayor. I decided to check him out too and could see what it was that was moving his music that way. The bass. I been sorta fanatical about it ever since man...

Had it been 1 more piece to their band at the little cafe, it've all been just 'a wall of sound' as i wouldn't of been able to distinguish what was really moving the music right along. He was just a humble man doing his job, that's all.

Lewis is wonderful. It took me a while to catch on to his material after Lewis I & II. I prefer I & II.

I mistakenly said previously, that i wondered why Eric Clapton & D'angelo didn't collab anymore after the New Years Eve Special and forgot that they did during the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They sung a tribute to Curtis Mayfield, right before he died.

In the past D'angelo hasn't seen fit to reply (that's cool man, do you) but it is a New Year, clean slate, whatever.

I still kinda hold to the fact that 15 must love the advantage of us having to kiss his tail to get pieces of D information from him & him only.

Any of the other artists would have to come on here and fend for themselves (Badu, Talib, Common Black Thought) as 15 ain't gonna stress himself over their misunderstandings.

I'm 32 years old, and am just now experiencing what it's like to be in love.

A woman can bring you to your highest 'high' or down to the lowest 'lows' imagineable. It's no joke when it overtakes you, and you decide to give yourself over to it, which i have.

My 31 years were spent not really caring about females, per se, as they never had love for me anyways, i felt. (or not the ones i was attracted to)

There's always 1 though, that will work her way into your heart and it's as if i'm at her mercy, as to if she will play me, or be gentle with me and reciprocate her affections.

I just got off my knees praying that i don't want to fall *that* deeply for her, as i don't like the feeling of one to have this power over me. In a way, i know she feels exactly the same way for me.

Those twins remind me EXACTLY of her. Their body movements are identical to hers, they have very cute/sneaky looking faces. Even the way they let their hair hang down to their back, all remind me of her.

Why im writting this, i dunno, lol!

Rez, that Maxwell clip made my night! Awwww man.

In 1997 when he was out putting his thang down, i had the 'audacity' to not really be into him, as for some stupid reason, i saw him as too eccentric.

His stuff has aged well, might i add. It has that certain 'mwahhh' factor to it.

It's amazing that his material reached 'right next to the lowlands of Germany'. That's a testament.

I keep reading that Maxwell also, has new material coming out.

I've known about Maxwell since his first album, like I said I've been studying my ass off!!! But I know what you mean with the "muhwaaaa" thing. You'd be suprised how big a following smaller artists or artists that are big in the states and not abroad have overhere "in the lowlands next to germany (to the left I might add! lol)"! THANK GOD! Bilal did pretty good with a sold out Paradiso couple of months back!

Don't know if you know this cat? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZhisRbim-c But his show sold out in 10 minutes, this being a 1000 people capacity, but still, the guy was amazed that we knew him! Not that I was there...the show was sold out in 10 minutes!!! He wasn't there with this trio however, cuz than I would've made sure I was sleeping in front of the door at the ticket office!

You were right about John Mayer. Mayer got that Strat singing like a mug. Mayer got chops & feel. He grooving hard too. He got a good ear for picking up and following melodies. That's what you call knowing your instrument. He could easily be a first call session guy if you can improv like that on the spot.

That's creative right there, him and a Dj. (Just Blaze)

Did i see a chick throw up a gang sign @ 4:52, lol.

I think i'm go and download 'Continum' tonite. It's a shame that we can download all this music for free, when these artists work hard to create it.

Rez, John Mayer torn the house down the other night at an televised awards show. He performed Alongside Corrine Rae Bailey (putting in his fills) the a little with John Legend. His performance came after theirs and he performed his song 'Gravity' which was really powerful!

You were right Rez, straight up & down!

Not really my thing though...I never got why playing that many notes really mattered that much to the music!? Really impressive and all, dude can play! but if we're talking technique wize I prefer this cat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utn6GuPuwE8 He also went to berklee, same class as Steve Smith (Journey) actually! Isn't that Nathan on bass again! lol Reason I like this cat more is he's soloing on phrases and hits in the music, and he's got amazing stick techniq!! I'm sure Dana can do that to!

A lot of the young gospel musicians, talented as they are, (on bass & drums) tend to overplay, all the time.

There's no such thing as space to them, they will defintely unleash those chops on ya.

Dana has 'breakaway talent' meaning, that the synapses in his hands or brain fire quicker than the average drummer. He makes it look effortless.

Dave Weckl has that same gift. (as well as countless other drummers & latin percussionists)

Vinnie & Nathan are seasoned, those inexperienced silly games, they'll never have to play.

I agree 1000% with you Rez.

Not sure if I want to either? hehe Thing is...you can study your arse off to do all them fancy tricks and whatnot...but FEEL, GROOVE and SOUND is all from the soul! For some reason that always spoke more to me in a musician than fancy chops! Every young cat has his or her phase in which chops is THE thing, but unless you take a few steps back...NO ONE is going to want to work with you!

You know Bow, I've been studying my ass off to get Dilla's signature feel down, I know you are not that familiar with his beats, but trust me...to try and play that type of feel is nearlly humanly impossible cuz triplets and straight feel don't mingle in the human brain...But last friday I did a session and I got it down! (well at least I FELT I was getting it down) And I never seen so many headnods ALL NIGHT at the place! and THAT is what I'm doing this for!

You should really check his beats out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6k_miyf65c He inspired so many!

I worded what i was trying to say poorly, sorry. Dana (John Blackwell, Dave Weckl, +1 zillion other drummers) are not only very musical, but it 'flows naturally'. A gift from Jehovah God.

When i say 'breakaway talent' it's that thing as you yourself know Rez as a musician, that you can hear 1 note being played by someone (whatever the instrument of choice) and you know that they got 'it' personal tastes aside. It's undeniable.

Playing a zillion notes, on someone elses gig, from what i understand, will make you loose out on a lot of work, as you've stated yourself.

Personally, i like those players, in incriments. It's not that they only can distinguish themselves, but even if someone tried to mimic them, it wouldn't sound convincing enough.

Dana is a real exxagerated example, as after two songs of overplaying like that, i would want to punch through his snare drum with my fist, lol... He must keep a lot of energy to sustain that type of play all night. I'm sure Berklee will help him to pull in the reighns & tone all that down a few notches.

I going to look into J DIlla, as he's inspirede so many people, it's almost annoying to hear about.

Where were all these people with the pots & pans, wailing & moaning in the streets, when he was alive?

Toward the end of his life, he had to still grind, from what i read, from his deathbed. I hope that doesn;t piss anyone off, i'm not trying to be disrespectful. Dilla this, Dilla that is all i'm hearing.

I guess there will always be the endless discussion of "what makes a good musician"!! hehe I feel we are on the same page though..

Dilla will be a legend forever among the real music/hiphop/beatmaker lovers, and maybe a generation or 2 from now, he won't be remembered the same way as he is now, but there will always be someone who still digs his beats!

As long as there is hiphop...there will be J Dilla! He was wayyyyyy ahead of his time! The beats he was making towards the end of his life even made me go: UHHHHH???!!!??? But maybe that's what hiphop is gonna sound like in 2020? who knows! he was the first one to make those beats!!!

Not long after Dilla passed I was clubbing, and well as USUAL shit WASN'T happening! (I only dance to music I dig, this night I wasn't doing much dancing!!). UNTIL the DJ puts on "Runnin" a track by The Pharcyde! THAT RECORD ALONE made my night! Now understand that from the 600 people there where about 5 who actually knew the song (newbies!!!), but hearing that song BANG over a full p.a. did Dilla justice!

Ms. Yancey is very pretty & gracious.

I thought i read here that Dilla has a younger sibling that is getting into producing too, so i guess, all isn't lost for you'll fans of the 'Dilla sound'.

Hey Rez, do you know anything about Jehovah's Witneses and their beliefs?

Well, one of there teachings is that of a ressurection, in which those now sleeping in death will awaken, shortly.

I'm almost certain that they knock on your door on Saturday morning or you have a relative in your family that's one. Listen to them and visit the Kingdom Hall 1 time and form your own opinion of them & their teachings.

I assure you 1000000%, it'll be the best decision of 2007 you'll make.

This world we live in now is cruel and people are very harsh towards one another. It makes day to day life very stressful. World conditons are continually deteriorating all over the world, it's sickening man.

It's gonna get better though.

if you ever noticed that when these acts tour (Beyonce, Usher, Maxwell, Anthony Hamilton, Musiq, Justin Timberlake, Rapheal Saadiq, Floetry, etc) their whole 'backline' are gospel musicians.

Although they are stigmatized as overplayers, that's what people wanna hear & see at those concerts. High energy drummers with massive kits, nice fills, crazy gospel runs on bass & keys, solid grooves alot of showmanship, those gospel guys tend to give you that in spades. And i love seeing them do what they do!

Everyone has their right to believe in whatever they want be it religion or a god? Personally I'm glad to NOT having commited to anyone of them...I have my reasons, but just know that I'm not in anyway disrespecting anyone or anything, to me everyone is free to believe what they want!

Now that you mention the fact that ALL big RnB stars use gospel cats, I thought about it and well...my conclusion is that I'm just not into that stuff! When you check out that old Sly footage of Parliament stuff...sure they have alot of show elements (being it costumes or huge UFO's on stage!) but they kept the FUNK! Now I understand that the level of musicianship nowadays is alot higher compared to than but like I said I'm a "groove" type musician and music fanatic/listener/consumer/appreciator!

Have you ever seen footage of D's Voodoo tour? It's INSANE! it's 2 hours of FUNK coming at ya like a train!!! And to me what makes it even more special is that fact they KEPT THE FUNK GOING! and The Soultronics are ALL A-CLASS musicians! They just didn't OVERPLAY themselfs and let the music speak instead of make the "musician" speak!

Like I said I like to see heads noddin' everywhere you look! with all them fancy chops I'm to distracted from the music because someone feels it's his time to shine!

Anyway I might be a bit oppionated about the whole thing but that's just the way I feel! Eric Clapton can do a 10 minute solo and I wouldn't be bored, Steve Vai can do a 10 minute solo and I'd be jawning after 2 min and falling a sleep after 3 min! Its probabbly a personal taste thing!

I really do.

For me, music is a spiritual thing within itself, from the short time i've been (attempting) to play it, and the euphoric experience i recieve at times, from listening to certain artists or songs, it really can be a spiritual journey, truly a gift from Jehovah God.

Music has always accompanynied worship, since the begininng of man's existance on earth. It's not a 'gospel church, black man's thing' at all. Didn't mean to spin it that way.

Around here, if you have a little proficeny on an instrument and people hear that you sorta 'know your way around a instrument' a person will conclude almost 100% of the time that you are somehow affilated with a church band.

It's not offensive, it's actually a great compliment. Gospel guys are really the standard in musicainship, to my ears.

Overplaying can be viewed as arrogance, but sometimes, sometimes, what i've viewed watching someone 'showing out' might just be that another man's level is much much much higher than my own. I take it with a grain of salt.

I see young cats that'll play me under the table, that make me feel really stupid even, but i try hard not to compare myself to the next man.

If something is your passion in life than there's no stopping it! I had a conversation with my band last week, and after about an hour of talking about the group and stuff we were like "YO can we change the subject?", after about 5 minutes of talking something different it got back to us talking bout' mixing the record such and such way, gigs over here, album covers...it's like a never ending story about the thing we love!

I hope to someday visit a REAL gospel church when I'm in the States (I have relatives over there), I've always enjoyed the music and the incredible positive vibe...allthough I don't go to church properly, the music seems good enough reason to visit one!

I'm gonna leave you with this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkuJ5kbMgeg You can name the singers right? hehe

That's a lot of singers & musicians on 1 stage. I wonder if all of them got paid for that gig?!?!?!?!?!

Rez, it look like we are gonna see another Rapheal Saadiq cd before another D'angelo one is issued to us. Rapheal is gonna throw something together in 3 months time.

Incidentially, i downloaded Instant Vintage earlier this week. I love Doing What I can, Body Parts, Be Here, Tick Tick, Still Ray & Different Times, the rest is ehh.

Ray Ray was ok, not my thing though.

I been listening to a lot of the 90's r&b, when music was fun. I like a lot of the New Jack Swing era music. There was a cat named Colin England (Outta Control) brother put out a bad cd in 1993.

Also, there was a group called 'Today' with Lee Bubba Drakeford, slamming. There music is out of print but i will continue to try & track it down.

I love Bobby Browns 'Bobby' album, produced by Teddy Riley.

I been having a lot of enjoyment going back listening to this stuff from the 90's.

I have to check out all those artists, I've been listening to MJ's Dangerous album, and Teddy did an awsome job with that to! Sonic wize it's also great! Jam is probbably my fav track of the album! It doesn't have a bass on it except on all the hits during entire song en a small fills towards the end of the song! But it's pretty much a drums and HITS driven track!

The bass player is ABSURD! Marcus eat your heart out!!! haha

Teddy Riley was on fire, it's a shame that they never did much after that together, really. Teddy crafted a nice sonic landscape for MJ. Teddy Riley & Quicney Jones (Floetry too) really knew how to accentuate MJ. I read that Marsha wrote that song in 1997 and her record company didn't like it. (Butterflies)

Yes, they are good, for some white boys. I see they got a brother on lead guitar.

That girl on bass is baaadddd. Rez, can you see from the clip how a master musician will lead. Instead of them rambling around on bass (licks flying wantonly) sounding very disorganized, Marcus sets the parameters for the groove. He sets up the chord progression, giving her a framework to solo in.

Around 1:40, after she's 'gotten her's' then he starts teaching, lol.

He's a baaaadd man.

A little too mello for me, right now.

I'm just in my New Jack Swing & 90's R&B phase at the moment.

Rez, i would love to see a 2 or 3 hour documentary on Teddy Riley from his begginings, up until 'Guy' then 'BlackStreet' & onto working with Micheal Jackson. Mr. Riley was another that started out as a talented gospel musician as well.

Behind the scenes for him must've been very tumultous though. I read he was tied up in a lot of bad contracts that halted recording for him for awhile.

He was the one that ushered in that New Jack Swing Sound and he carried it on his back in the early 90's.

Man, no one was cooler than Teddy Riley in his prime.

when you told your story bout' finally finding that one love...well I might not have to wait 5 years! lol I kinda/think found her (again)

You ever had a moment and the music in the background seems to be fitting very appropriate right that moment!? well anyway don't know WHY i'm telling you this but since you did the same, I thought I'd give it a go...I understand what you where saying! lets keep it at that!

Bow, you gotta help me out man...I'm stuck in music...I need to be fed something new!...anything new on your side you'd like to share (besides new jack era music, i'm going to be checking that out!)

Seems everyone wants to hear D's "bitch" song over in the other post! I think he will always be talked about on these boards, even if he never drops another album! lol

I have to be honest and say I can't wait to hear anything new from the guy! I mean I'm always looking out for new stuff, but his music has something special to it! indescribable...

Love can be very stressful. (as i'm a jealous person)

I wish i could keep 'mines' all too myself, but as i was reading 1 Corinthians the 14 chpt, it says that 'love is not jealous'. I'm so insecure over her, so i guess i have to grow to accept that fact.

Nope, nothing new that i've been digging, but in looking back in the past, something always caught me musically, when i wasn't even expecting it.

Those D'angelo & 15 songs, i can honestly say, that i have no desire to hear them.

Tid bits of info on D'angelo is tiresome, almost like the boy who kept crying wolf.

Anyways bow, congrats

first clip I have on the Later with... DVD, very dope! The second, well its kinda corny for my taste, but in to some extent I hear the whole gospel thing again, and even stranger... it kinda fits the brown sugar era! Update that ish with some p-funk influences by the good doctor and D, and I'm sure things will work out fine!

Yes, D'angelo's first one & Blackstreets first one, both dropped in the summer of 95.

Teddy Riley has gospel roots (As do Aaron & Damian Hall) & utilizes gospel musicians. Teddy (being the consumate music director) used a guy named Gerald Hayward on drums, who was a heavy gospel drummer that crossed over into the r&b world from the gospel arena, and was killing it, touring wise, before all these other gospel guys caught on & started to make inroads. It used to be sacrilgeous for the the gospel cats to play 'the devils music' but a few dolla's will change all that.

The second clip is Earth Wind & Fire's Devotion under neath Blackstreet's Before i Let Go. I would love to get a copy of that whole show live.

Your clip scared me. I was waiting for something to kick off, then the elevator doors open and i was trying to focus my eyes and make out if that was supposed to be a bloody lifeless corpse. I thought my man was a goner there for a second before he broke out with those Shakira dance vibrations!

DON'T LIE TO ME! lol

Rez, D'angelo had a swagger about himself before that whole 15 collaboration & neo soul era took to flight.

Why couldn't 15 just admire him from a distance and let that man be.

D'angelo got very lazy & dependant on 15 & his lofty ideas. 15 took took control of the wheel and now we got a D'angelo that has to have rose pedals sprinkled on the ground before he will walk, a true diva indeed.

Had 15 & D'angelo never combined forces i don't think it would've been a neo soul revolution, just r&b

I seen that cat before, he's, he's, he's...really extra. Too much talent. That's that 1 man band sitting in the train station playing, wowing people for a few measley dollars a day type of playing. There's a blind american guy out right now Raul Miduon (i think that's his name) that's doing something real similar.

Same ole, same ole, just us D'angelo fans getting humiliated & disrespceted on the regular, the usual.

I was told yesterday that i should get a hobby instead of worrying about D'angelo. D'angelo is sick right now (ala Brittney Spears) so we all should turn a deaf ear on him as he's struggling like hell right now, na mean.

When he gets well, 15 will suck him dry again..

How you been Rez?

However I don't think 15 will suck the life outta him when they work together, I always had the feeling they worked really well together! But I might not have all the inside info? The weather here has been brick cold and it's calling for snow in the morning, should be intresting.

Your guess is as good as mines in regards to D'angelo, i tell ya. I know what i can do about it though, and that is whisper a lil prayer to my God about the situation. I can always call on him Rez, that's why when you say that your not religious it baffles me, as everything in life will always come back to needing direction from Jehovah God. You simply cannot depend upon man, you will be disaapointed every time.

I was also told that i was misinformed about D'angelo, which supposes that my theories are waaaayyyy off. Dre probably ain't even thinking about D'angelo.

The Dre/D'angelo collab could've just been the 'Imagine' track, nothing more than that. Dre is releasing his own album towards the end of the year, as well as breaking a new act 'Bishop Lamont' & working with Marsha from Floetry.

You hate to think that our boy D'angelo will contiually spiral downward, because at some point, you can't go any lower.

It amazes me Rez, how his idol Prince was a straight laughinstock around the Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic era (1997-1998) totally washed up and outdated. That man, with the help of Larry Graham, humbled himself down and gave his life to Jehovah and BAM, Jehovah God gave him his dignity back.

What Robin Thicke is doing, is the exact same thing Lewis Taylor wanted for himself, but maybe was a little too quirky in trying to achieve it. When i heard the song 'I need Love' i thought it was Musiq Soulchild at first, similar tone, as he writes some slow bangers too. Raheem Devaughn would slay that song, as him & Thicke got similar talents. 'Breath' by Raheem is tough. Thicke & Raheem put on a show here, this past Valentines day.

I feel you though about our boy and would even take it farther by saying that whoever his Manager is, has done the piss poorest job at his position.

I know that it's kinda harsh to pin D'angelo not being able to pull it together on a manager, but if he happens to read our expressions, he should let us onto a little something.

Omarion hit that joker clean out the park, something real serious.

By the grace of God, i played in a musical (the biograph girl) throughout the whole month of November in 2006. Being a part of that & seeing it firsthand, i got a new appreciation for superb choreography. Also, i never ever tire of hearing a man begging for the affections of a woman. It's a real humbling experience.

I know when you thing Omarion, you associate it with something that is cookie cutter, kiddie cowboyish, but that melody is too infectious.

Rez, i'm starting to sit in with some guys (buy the grace of God) and their setlist is all over the place. When i sit and am struggling to break down those basslines and harmonies to 'Icebox' and other songs, it's educational + humbling. Music is certainly a language. With some cats, it comes easy, me, i be struggling my behind off to keep up.

My dad, within the last 2 months purchased the latest Korg TR 61 keyboard workstation for himself (it'll be played out come next January Namm show) and i try to bang out the melodies on that.

If you study any instrument, you have to essentially have basic keyboard skills, us bass players have to have an ear for harmonies & melodies and my dad's keyboard is turning into a real blessing.

They sound good Rez, i see they got my girl Berget Lewis giving it up.
I wil listen to them later on as i see i can acess all there songs.

I had a rehearsal last Thursday night that went horrible. I went Tuesday with the current bassist to watch him rehearse and meet my prospective band mates, everything went well. (they rehearse on tuesday & thursday 9:30 pm, they gig saturday night @ Tacoma Station in Tocoma Park maryland 8pm)

The original bassist called me Wednesday and asked if i could sit in with them on Thursday because he couldn't make it. I didn't have the songs down yet but i didn't want to leave him hanging so i 'manned up' and went. It was a real disaster. I wanted to slink outta there soo bad and as the manager & musical director put me on blast in front of 12 other musicians & singers i started to pack up my bass & cables when everybody pleaded with me to stay. I should've just left, went home, and learned the songs, but at their insistance i stayed put. They started to run through songs and rainbow was lost in the sauce. Boy was i embarrased, it won't happen again though, lol.

The current bassist told me to stick with it, because Rez, my feelings were really hurt. He's tired of playing for free and i understand his postion, having to haul all that equipment around, rehearsing twice a week at 9:30 at night. Where they play at on Sat cost $20.00 to get in (per person) he told me that there was 200 people there this past Saturday night, so the establishment is making money hand over fist but the musicians ain't seing a dime, not even complimentary drinks. I didn't go because i was at home shedding these songs. The drummers & percussionst are very gifted, they're 2 notches above me, which is a blessing. If i can only get on their level, we as a unit, would tear the roof off a establishment, imho.

demo version of "Don't stop till you get enough"? I'm into "what makes a good song" phase! this song is just a great example of a song build around ONE rhodes riff and two chords! It's real fun to listen to the demo cuz of all the timing flaws but still you can hear how great the song actually is! Also the whole bridge (that Q probabbly added to break up the song) isn't even in that version!

I also like this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzsEzD2fVwE YES it's him again, but I'm just amazed bout how easy he makes his guitar playing look while singing!

Hows the bassplayin' going? you catchin' up to them heavy cats you be playin' with?

btw...you read the Russel Elevado story on the boards?

The girl i was in love with is pregnant by another guy (a guy from her job) and she recently got engaged to be married to him. Her sister in law called me Sunday and broke the news to me and i cried on & off all day Sunday. (in front of my dad mind you)

I'm just now starting to be able to eat food, as i've had no appetite since Sunday. (April 1) My heart is broken, but again, only by the grace of God am i being sustained. Rez, im trying hard not to fall back into the old me and be hard on women, it's not worth it.

The gig, the original bassist took the gig back as he got those guys to pay him a lil' something.

Rez, you really and truly find out who your folks are when you are down in the learch. I have 2 buddys that are constantly calling to help see me through, i'm really upset about how the whole situation went down what goes around comes right back around.

Sadly, if ever she was woman enough to call me & apologize (which she isn't) i would forgive her and take her back in an instant.

I saw the info on D'angelo, but my heart has no feeling right now so i could really care less, no disrespect.

Falling in love with somebody might come around once in a persons lifetime, if it ever comes at all.

Maybe if i was a much handsomer dude, i would have more options, but in all honesty i don't. I have a knack for picking the most slickest flirtacious females only for them to try and ride roughshod on me.

I'm resolving to continue on pursuing being humble, even though that quality has absolutely no value in man's eyes.

I'm sitting here with my bass in my lap (I'm practicing drum paradidles, btw) I went to a rehearsal last thursday night but the vibe outside the studio was too thuggish, so i bounced. My life is too precious to be putting myself in some crazy enviorment with cats i don't even know. Besides, the owner of the group spotted me walking down the street with my bass in tow and my Littlemark Bass head and said he needed a bass player for his band. We exchanged numbers, i didn't take it too seriously but he called. I'm like you Rez, a man of my word and when he gave me the location & time to show up, i showed up. I get there and it was about 10 guys in the parking lot cussing up a storm, smoking, etc (being thuggish) I whispered a prayer up to my Heavenly Father for strength to leave (as i truly need experience playing with other musicians, especially a good pocket drummer) and turned off my phone, put it in reverse and got out of there.

He left 3 messages on my phone but i had to break it down for him. He's very persusive so i'm going to give them 1 mo' try this Thursday as he assured me that those cats had the studio booked previous to his time and that his sessions aren't like that, sooo, we'll see.

But that new D'angelo reminds me of the 1995 D'angelo. He had a way of making you 'feel cool' when you listened to him.

I don't want to size his music down to anything theoritical, it just came together for him on that track.

If more emerge, then they emerge, but i know better then to go looking for more.

What you think about it Rez?

I missed out alot of gigs (I was also younger) because either the gig scared the shit outta me OR the musicians intimidated me! go in there play your freaking ass off and show'em what FUNK IS!!! that was my PEP RALLY speech!

As far as the D' song...BOW lemme tell you...I freaked out when I heard it! I was checking out the radioshow 15 was doing, and then I read a post "did anyone pick up on the new D' gem?", I got goosebumps listening to the song!

He's still got his game BAD! After all the bad stories bout' him this makes me think he's finally dealt with it or something? The track sounds honest you know? As far as the music...well...its pure genius if you ask me...I understand what you are saying with the BS thingy, the melody just gets in your head, the bridge is also shows his skills as composer!...but still, it's D' doing what he does best, play sloppy as fuck and still make it groove like no one else can do! At first I thought it might be a Clapton/D' collabo cuz of the classical guitar!? Imagine that!

The track indeed makes you feel good, it gives me a positive vibe you know! It's not that often that I hear music that I can relate to, but if I we're a songwriter/singer/composer THAT MUSIC is what I would wanna make! on the real!

Bow I just TODAY came across these guys...I think D' should do something with a vocoder! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g38FgKys-74 THAT, with a MOOG bassline and a freakin' LINN drum! He would blow up my speakers! (the bassplayer is a killer!)

You know the feeling when you hear something new that you wanna just play your instrument? that's what I got from D's song and the youtube video! Bow we should appreciate the gift we have to be able to play a instrument and play music!

Rez, i'm waiitng to read the replies of those that are gonna tear into his guitar playing, because you know it's coming, you know good & well it's coming, lol. They will question if it's really him playing & other petty trivialites which is good internet fodder.

Even if that's an old track, which they went back and reworked, overdubbed with the classical/flamenco, phrygian mode guitar playing and a phat Pino walking bassline, over a ridiculous 8th note pulse, that song has redeemed D'angelo, to my ears. I'm really not a hard man to please.

That song reminds me of a really shy & introspective D'angelo, trying to express his intrests to a female.

Rez, does it seem to you that when When D'angelo isn't trying to be overtly funky, his material turns out funky. When he trys to hit funk dead on (Chicken Grease) it's not there, maybe it's just me.

Rez, i could really do without 15 requesting 10,000 hits on his Myspace page to hear more, as it ain't that serious man, just give us about 6 more gems to hear and i'm straight, i mean we been waiting for a while now.

I guess the Dr.Dre collaboration was just wishful thinking afterall, as D'angelo seems to be getting his feet back underneath him!

I'm a optimist for life! I'm just siked to hear real D', and I think I finally GET what you are saying to me about BS and Voodoo! If i'm get you right? D' seems to be at his purest again?, writing what HE feels and not so much influenced BY! Creating music rather than interpreting it? Correct me if I'm wrong Bow?

As far as Dre is concerned, I still would like to hear those collabos...but for now I will be patient! it's indeed been 5/7 years, a couple of years won't be a problem! 15 knows what he's doing otherwise he would've never treated us with this gem!

Somehow I kinda felt this was an older song? the 8th notes is dope, I would've NEVER in a million years "thought" about using such a groove! I would love to hear Pino play some fretless stuff on one of his songs...

I agree Rez. Left & Right, Playa Playa & Chicken Grease ( i only know the name of the songs from looking at the cd off Amazon.com recently) are not funk songs, to my ears. They sounded watered down & stiffled and they didn't 'swing' at all. That was just a batch of songs that i could really, really do without.

Really listening to the latest cut, that might e'en be Adam Blackstone on bass, as that man has 'feel'. On the Dave Chapelle concert cd, i do recall him murdering Jill Scott's 'Golden' & Mos Def's 'My Umi Says'. I can tell under all that he does in his playing he is gospel influenced, as he's very melodic & busy.

Rez, are you reading the D'angelo backlash and are you too left wondering if we all hearing the same track? Questlove is a great man for letting that out but as he ciphon's them out lil by lil they gonna get scrutinized harshly as the complete picture we can't put together. I'll be a good boy and wait, but if i had about 6 more of them i would be good for the whole summer, lol!

In response to Reply # 161

Don't get me wrong, not particularly liking something is all well and fine, but intentionally leading the pack in demeaning an artist, AN OKPLAYER ARTIST, one whom a portion of your livelyhood stems from, is oxymoronic, ya think?

Has OKPLAYER DAN gotten 'too' comfortable with his job.(DON IMUS)

Rez, the Don Imus reference stems from a popular caucausian disc jockey, that recently made a racist remark about some afro american women that play basketball for a recognized University on his air waves. The disc jockey was called to account for speaking thoughtlessly (FIRED) and until recently, was a major news event.

I wish he (OKDAN) would've put a lil more thought into it Rez, as regionally, culturally, geographically, we all have our unique dialects, depending upon where we are dwelling.

It was noted that the way in which D'angelo enunciates, is actually how the majority of Richmond Virginians speak, that ain't no big secret. To undermine if the track is legetimate is real reckless. An April's fools joke? Oh geez, it sounds *that* bad to you? Questlove is a grown man, yes he has a sense of humor, but who would that be funny too in the least lil bit? What would the joke be again? Is Dan clueless?

Girabaldi is the real deal, but the Tower of Power of Music never hit with me. Rocco and those 16th notes were on point.

Paradidles, i'm working on how to incorporate them and shift the accents like you said. A groovy bass player is one who is rhythmic as a drummer, to my ears, so i'm forced to take notice and study what you'll do.

We (my group) finished the first song from our forthcoming album, and its also the single! I'm just so proud for the way it turned out...I can listen to over and over! I just dig my/our own music! (you think that's strange?)

We recorded the whole album in Portugal, we took the entire home studio over there and recorded the basic tracks (beats, vocals, drums and bass) in this house in the middle of nowhere. Everytime I hear the songs it brings back good memories of that time! And I think the vibe we had over there really comes across in the songs.

Anyway just wanted to share that with someone! Have a nice weekend Bow! Music is a wonderful thing ain't it! Gets us through the good and the bad times!

How soon before John Legend impregnates Corrine Bailey Rae? They on tour together, so you know what that means. I got 'Breathless' by her on repeat. 'Breathless & Like A Star' make that whole cd to me. She sound very Eyrkah Badu-ish, mixed with a lil' Norah Jones.

Your group finished an album? You'll should put your bid in to become Okayartists. Any chance i can hear something? Is is R&B mixed with Pop? I know it sounds good, you got good taste, to my ears.

Last night i got to talking to this girl after worship and said the heck with rehearsal, my love life is much more important, lol!

Rez, that was a good save by Okpdan as we were aiming to tear into him something lovely. I still think he should stick to graphic design or listening to his 'Greenday' or 'Avril Lavigne' cds. Let us men/women folks enjoi D'angelo without the idot commentary.

Rez, i would like to think that D'angelo is in a space as to trusting what he feels that sound good to his ears and leave the Prince/Marvin Gaye legacy stuff to the muso journalists.

I can pnly hope that he is gonna trust his instincts this go around and forfeit what Poyser or Questlove feed him, as to the direction he should go in.

D'angelo will be okay. I wish he would take the time & visit the Kingdom Hall. He don't know what he's missing.

Rez, do you'll get 'Bass Player' magazine where your at. It's an american publication, don't know if it reaches you shores. This month they featuring Larry Graham and he speaks a little on his faith (as being one of Jehovah's Witnesses) his relationship with Prince, and what's in the offing with himself musically. Also, Sly and The Family Stone material is getting remastered. (whatever that means) It's very informative, i usually don't purchase those mags (waste of money imho and keeps you gassing for equpiment you really don't need) but i bought that one.

That's nice. For years Rez, i could never 'get into' Sly & The Family Stone. I dunno why. Maybe there music was too upbeat for me. It's almost like it's sacreligious if you dont own none of their albums, i have their greatest hits cd, and also i have Graham Central Station's 2 disc greatest hits.

Truthfully, there's not much music i own from the 70's that i ever pull out & listen to with regularity. I find more enjoyment out've 80's r&b & the early 90's r&b.

I've recently (also by your insight) started checking out the 80's and 90' and well...It still doesn't strike me as soulful, for lack of better words to describe it! Allthough I must say that my recent discovery of Zapp & Roger gave me much hope!

I more or less started digging in music history because there isn't much new coming out that will stand the test of time! not saying that I don't like anything coming out nowadays...but there isn't a new Marvin or Sly or MJ or JB walking around no more! D' has all the potential in my eyes! bringing music with honesty is very difficult.

In my mind all music is made allready, be it classical or jazz or whatever music style, it's just that there are certain artists/composers/producers who make music that is honest in the way it's supposed to be made! For instance John Mayer, he's his last album is nothing new, though he brings it in such a way it just amazes me! It's real, he listend to the masters, studied it, and made it his own! I have great respect for artist doing this. I hope to be one myself someday as I am still studying!

Also, what D'angelo has in his favor is that certain 'thing' i see amongst many gospel musicians, which is the ability to 'encourage' through music. I believe it's a gift from above. I'm not a gospel listener but from what i've heard of it, certain songs by certain artists 'lift you up' and i really don't know why that is. There's an inherent honesty to most gospel music, and underneath it's content the musicianship sometimes is superb.

Here's an example (for example only)

It's fierce and very competitive. For the most part they understand the language of music and speak it fluently. They have amazing keyboardist's, vocalist's, drummers, bassist's, gutarist's, producers, everything.

That's the 'feel' D'angelo used to bring to the table.

Rez, have you heard the cut on Joss Stones 'Introducing Joss Stone' Girl They Won't Believe You. That joker is slamming, the rest of the cd i couldn't get into, but that particualar song Rapheal showed his behind once again, imo. I hear that gospel thing in their too, moreso on the drumkit as whoever is drumming on that song is pushing/pulling the song like a mug.

I mean, can a person groove any deeper than that? He playing with, not 1 drummer, but 2. Ridiculous.

There's too many fantastic players in this world to be arrogant or prideful. Just when you think you making strides and then all of a sudden, BAM, i see a clip like that, lol.

I'm like you, and am open to all styles of music. Reggae is good. I haven't sought out any or it (reggae) because, when i do, it's usually rubbish. I'm still on that 80's & 90's r&b era right now. There was a whole slew of things that i liked back then but didn't buy, but now with this filesharing and all, i'm making up for it.

Rez, there's a r&b group that came out in the late 80's, early 90's called Today, produced by Teddy Riley (cd was entitled New Formula) that i've been trying to track down but it's out've print. I had it on cassete tape, but as you can imagine, it popped a long time ago.

It was New Jack Swingish, but the lead singer had a gospel-ly way about his singing. He went solo, and did well with his intial solo album until that era of music dried up. I still get a kick outta listening to it, as it takes me back!

there's only 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week, and well there is so much music that we'll most prob never hear it all! but still every time I find/hear something new...i'm siked! I hope to never loose that with music!?
Also I'm always changing in directions...one week I'll be into latin, then it'll be reggae, then its nostalgia singer/songwriter stuff...it's never ending!
it's good to know that there are still people like us Bow! otherwise where would our musical heritage go?

This era of music right now, has me looking more appreciatively at 80's & 90's r&b, before the hip hop took off. R&B music at one time seemed to stand on it's own, but them days seem long gone.

I didn't know some of the songs were leaked. I didn't wanna 'run my mouth to negatively' regarding *what i think the songs sounded like to me* however, the batch of songs that were left off D'angelo's last album, i didn't feel. (Joe Texan, the James Brown cover, etc) Those tracks might've, just been them warming up in the studio, but they sound dull and very lifeless, to my ears. Jamming, doesn't appear to be D'angelo's thing but then again, maybe that how that man falls into a groove, who knows?

I also don't want to fall into the pattern of looking like a pest, year after year, suprise, suprise!

For whatever reason though, 15 hasn't just went ahead and let *us fans hear the music that was created in order to be heard* out for public consumption, instead, we have to always be at that dude's mercy, which i know he thrives off. Maybe Questlove doesn't want to jeopardize the songs that could possiblly be on an upcoming D'angelo album.

All that trying to read between the lines and decipher & codify *this & that statement* makes D'angelo seem fairytail-ish, lol.

I'm sure Quest is thinking up some ego tripping, easter egg hunt to put us through, in order for us to hear the songs on lastfm, lol.

I understand where 15 is coming from indeed! It's kinda tricky to gradually leak something knowing that it might backfire like it did with the "really love" track!
Still, I hope 15 did that to let everyone know that D' still has great stuff coming for us music lovers! Though I wouldn't mind to hear more! But just buggin' him to share some more isn't gonna work...and even if he DID, I'd probbably be the last one to find out given the fact that I don't have a questo-cryptic-decoder-ring!
Anyway for now I'm diggin' Rahsaan's records...great production!

The thing is, ?uest to me seems to be a down to earth guy (see blogs and youtubes) but still I mean...you don't know the guy for real! It's not like your sitting 1 on 1 with the man talking about the weather or whatever!
I think most people THINK they know him as a person because he blogs and through OKP but still its a MEDIUM if you know what I mean! I enjoy reading about stuff and try to understand the industry as much as possible! But I mean, I wouldn't even think of walking up to the man like "yo ?uest, I'm Jax aka ReZ from the OKP boards" "WASSUP MAN!"....like we're friends or whatever, it just doesn't work that way, or at least I can imagine it not working that way!
I think OKPs think they are previliged or something to get something more just BECAUSE they are OKP's, meaning getting inside info and treats and stuff, and this is just not the case! thats not the way this industry works AT ALL!
Personally I'm just happy that there are still people like ?uest, he doesn't HAVE to share this new Pharrell project, he could take it to the grave with him, but instead he does share it with us! There aren't alot of people doing that nowadays! SO yes I do respect him!
But I believe there are enough people like that around here!

15 'semi' welcomes you in, and when you take him up on it, he'll hit you with that 'ion't really know this cat' demeanor.

I been here since the end of 1999. That man got a feel for how each of us are, imo.

I've personally went up to and introduced myself to Questlove at Radio City Music Hall, as i saw that he was real personable, in person. (The D'angelo Voodoo Tour) Quest was standing right out front, right before the show and i took the initative to show that man some love. Not on no fanboy, gasping for breath steez, i got posters of you on my wall in my room. Not that, can a nigg please get backstage to take some photo's with D'angelo either. I drove 4 hours 1 way, spent close to $200.00 for a floor seat (only to find out that my seat was about 6 feet from the lobby area) So why not take the opprotunity and humble myself down & say hello to him? Questlove was welcoming and friendly.

Nah, being an 'okayplayer' doesn't entitle me to anything at all, although that idea was sold here as the one stop shop for the secret squirrel insider info, but...

Sometimes, i just get the feeling that Questlove can't see how immature some of his reasonings or gestures are.

I understand that his gig is to make hip hop music, not be a cyber janitor err, i mean moderator. Him speaking in a more straight up manner would certainly dead a lot of speculations.

His last hyrogliphic posting implied that Def Jam was trying to work a deal out with D'angelo, if i encripted it right, lol.

I dunno man, sheesh, lol!

If a person has a personal relationship with God (Jehovah) whatever the endeavor, he can bless it, in fact, i know that to be the case.

Knowing '15' means what? Rez, do you think that 15 would put another drummer besides D'angelo (other than Knuckles, maybe) Another bassplayer besides Adam Blackstone or Pino? I'm highly doubtful, as their line of work is too doggie dog, cut throat.

A person needs guidance and wisdom from above.

Here in the Maryland/Washington DC Metropolitan, it is very competitve, as live music comes in 3 very small forms. Go go, gospel, or a little r&b/jazz. This ain't exactly the 1960's anymore, lol.

I saw the PFunkamentary some time ago. Those guys were really extra with it. The music was revolutionary but their lifestyles were in disarray. I never play that stuff around my mother, NEVER, lol!

It might not be that strange for D to hit the road with different cats and not the Soultronics again, besided alot of them are busy people, Pino with J.M. and the Who, Poyser producing, ?uest with the roots, Hamilton doing his solo thing, Spanky chillin' out in ATL...
Also I read somewhere ?uest loved the Voodoo tour but he also mentioned that he put the Roots on hold for a bit! I don't know if he would tour so extensively with D' again, maybe 3 months but 18 months world tour? I don't know! The Roots are still his baby!
But you do have a point with getting players that fit that bill!? I mean, YES there are alot of great cats out there, but playing the grooves D' wants...I don't know which cat would fit ?uest's chair? Or maybe D' decides to throw the live show around and do some Usher Esque type show!

Rez, R Kelly has a live tour out (Light it Up Tour 2007) you can get it on albumbase.com for free. It's not bad, a lil explicit, and sexual in content, but the man can put on a show, no doubt about it.

Rez, do you know anything about Raheem Devaughn?

Raheem is ill! Seems like he's a hybrid between Musiq and Bilal, dudes got some scary harmonys going on! Though he might not top Bilal cuz that dude is simply outta this world! But he's got something that reminds me of them! Thanks for the tip!

If your feelings aren't mutual, it's cruel to mislead her into thinking that she has a chance to be with you, when she doesn't. I got played like that and i'm still trying to recover. (only by the grace of God)

I'm looking forward to hearing Mr. Devaughn's new cd 'Love Behind The Melody'

I can't help that, it's just my nature. Maybe it's because i'm honest with people.

New Raheem is always welcomed. On his latest mixtape he previews 'Wing & a Prayer' which i honestly didn't feel it the first few listens but in the context of this new cd i'm sure it will sit nicely. He plays around with the Marvin Gaye tone, he nails D'angelo's falsetto, then has his own stylings.

Rez, albumbase.com has all of Raheems mixtapes, all you have to do is register first.

It's a shame that all this music is their for the taking, as these mixtapes are Raheem's sidehustle, i can imagine.

There's a big hole in the music industry right now with filesharing. Yes, it's unethical, but so is a cd for $17.99. Rez, i know that 2 wrongs don't make a right (they make fun) no, but really, i honestly feel bad downloading, when i do so.

The intensity of his voice is just amazing! Also the keyboard player reminds me of D'! he has the same type of fills in his playing though not "overplaying" the music! also the timing of the song is brilliant!

The other day I saw Joy Denalane perform in my hometown! open air jazz festival, she is mos'def one of the most talented singers i've seen in a long while! She sings with such ease it's unreal! and she NEVER sings "to much"!! which always annoy's me with other female singers...SHUT THE F@#!@ UP!!! The band was also tight, you could hear they where IN IT "together" you know? no place for egos! But still you could hear they all have serious chops!

Made my day seeing that show!

Oh and you should check Jamie's song "Multiply"...OLD SKOOL "Al Greenish" sounding track with ALL the right parts, great vocals, great hook, great production, great arrangment...it was a big hit over here! And the dude is white by the way! lol

but to no avail. I'm going to see if i can track it down on Napster.

In all honesty though, being aware of Lewis Taylor's situation has kinda, sort've saddened me, as to buying into whatever an artist is selling. I tend to follow these guys so closely, only to watch them 'crack up' time an again.

Rez, what are your thoughts on filesharing?

Depends on what you mean by filesharing? Personal from one to another friend? or the whole DL-ing trend thats been so delightfull for the whole music industry?
I'm a musician myself...so when our new album drops we'd like to get paid for the 1000+ hours we put into making that record! Now the thing is...a album over here costs €19,99 which is about $26...I understand that if someone only likes 1 or 2 songs they are gonna DL it!
Now if someone likes the whole cd...they can DL it and we won't see a dime...and still we WON'T see a dime if we sell 1000+ albums cuz we need to pay record company back for expenses made by them...so after about a year if we are lucky we get to see SOME cash but in the end is chump change!
We need to do live shows to make money and the only way to do so is by getting our name out there, and if DL is that way than so be it! the people who really support us will buy our album, even if it's only family and friends!
Lets face it, music industry sucks unless you sell millions of units you ain't gonna see money!
Yes I DL, I only buy the albums that I KNOW will last for the rest of my life! But with a 19,99 price tag I choose carefully, when I'm making bucks THEN I'm gonna go to record store and buy me a shit load of stuff I have allready but want fo'real!
Lets face it, internet and DL-ing makes the world smaller and its great for smaller artists to be able to play more gigs just BECAUSE of that!
SO to anwser your question...I don't know, good or bad?

Like you, pirating, has spoiled me for life. In a way, i am stealing, when i think about it and it bothers my conscience a lil. Some things that i've downladed i don't believe were intended to be put out (like the Maxwell Live one, not the unplugged one) so to me, it's like a freebie.

On the other hand, some things that i had years ago on cassette tape, that has popped or decayed to such an extent that it's unplayable, i've tried to track down through pirating, that doesn't bother my conscience. It's more like a never ending receipt of purchase that i redeem.

I can do without the booklets inside the cd and such. The only cd i can see purchasing legally, is D'angelo's (Erykah's) and my girl, Anita Baker, and that's sad how rotten i've become thanks to filesharing.

Well, filesharing HAS openend me up to a lot of artists I wouldn't have heard if I had to check'em all out at the local record shop! I do however enjoy reading liner notes, don't know why but I've always done that since I was a kid, checking out the musicians and producers (its a sort of quality control if you know what I mean!?), nowaydays I check everything from the studios they recorded at to the mastering and artwork! I even read the thank you's! lol

Where did you get that Maxwell live album? cuz that's still on my list of "must haves"!!!

It's on Albumbase.com, as well as D'angelo Live at The North Sea Jazz Festival, as well as everything by (well, almost everything by) Erykah Badu. The musicianship and ambiance the band sets on Maxwell's, is fantastic, what a live show that must've been!

Yes, i was refering to many broad points on file sharing. I really don't understand it's scope, other that hearing artist moaning that it's hurting them. It's hurting the industry, yes. (illegal bootlegging for distribution, not peer to peer sharing) Movies are bootlegged heavily too, but that industry keeps right on rocking along. Perhaps it's greed on the part of the trillion dollar music industry?

I haven't heard Questlove, D'angelo, or Erykah bellyaching about it being a problem. They seeing their money by touring, right? Only thing that seems to displease them is leaked songs that are unfinished. I mean, the D'angelo songs Quest has are his too, he's played on them, so he has that right to share them, at his own discretion.

Rez, if you can walk me through using z share (and i have the tools here) i can upload it for you if you want it badly, either track by track or... It's his first album Urban Hang Suite, that him and his band are covering, live in Amsterdam. Amsterdam is not in Germany, oops, my bad. When my parents were military (my dad only) we visited Germany and have pictures of the world's biggest clock & the world's crookedest street. (or something like that) I could've promised you that there's an Amsterdam Germany.

I didn't know the calculations of going gold & platinum were lowered. That's all due to filesharing? I mean, it means nothing to me regardless (lol) I know that those rap artist's have no problem hitting platinum. I dunno about your boy Pharell though, with all that boasting and bragging that he be doing, his music is for highschool aged people anyways, as the lifestyle & things he pushes is very fairytale. It was cool when he was just into production but that other mess, no thanks.

Just select de file you want to upload (don't forget to agree to terms of use and so on...) and after a few minutes they leave a link! Lemme know if you'd like the Lewis Taylor stuff, I'll inbox'em!

Well over here I know for a fact they changed the calculations for platinum cuz except for the BIG BIG names over here NO ONE is selling more than 5g's over here! and that's just ONE act that does those numbers!

I think Pharrell can do pretty much what he likes nowadays! He has so much doh that well...he doesn't need to make a solo hit record I guess. I mean his label probably isn't happy! Should he care?

btw I get to see The Roots and Sly Stone this year! North Sea has great lineup this year!

Her aura is a lil too dark for me. I don't think i could sit through one of her shows, i dunno why, just a pretentious vibe i get from seeing her clips. She lays on that 'im a real musician' role kinda thick. I mean, if you play bass, keys, guitar, or whatever else, then do what you do.

I will have to work on uploading that Maxwell, as you need this in your collection.

As a whole, i dunno if anyone is doing numbers like they was putting up 10 years ago. Times have changed indeed. True, not all are internet savants, but just with basic computers skills one can have access to many things, for free. It's a double edged sword really.

Rez, do you think that Questlove would ever upload those D'angelo songs as he's doing with Pharell, or will he be stingy, i mean frugile with em'.

That would be a special collection of songs to have. When i hear that the songs are 7 or 8 minutes long, that scares me. That's not D'angelo's lane right there. 3 minutes, get in get out, D'angelo will roast you, 7 or 8 minutes, i'm losing intrest.

Really Love sounds better than everything on D'angelo's last album, i dunno why, but it does. Maybe because that's how i can picture his personality being.

If i knew for sure that Questlove would let me hear a couple songs, i would ride up to Philly for one of his djing gigs. I would sit out in my car and just listen to em, lol.

Rez, Dr. Dre got an autobiography out and i was reading through it yesterday @ the Borders Book Store. It's the ususal behind the scenes gangsta talk, and gets 'dark' when it highlights his issues on Eazy E Jerry Heller, Suge Knight & Tupac. Right underneath it they had a copy of 'The Chronic cd'. The book also mention Mike Elizondo, that's one session cat that has made some serious money. Dre seems like a loyal dude, so does Mike.

I still can't figure out how to upload this Maxwell but i'm going to try later on.

It's impossible to get a straight answer out've Questlove as to why he coveting them. Really Love is not a throwaway track, to my ears. That's the best i've heard since Brown Sugar from him.

To me, he'll sit with a song way too long & overwork it till it don't groove. His last cd really annoyed me man. Outside of this site & online reviews, i've never heard one positive thing about it.

I've yet to hear someone riding around listening to it. You'll never catch me doing that. I'll ride around blasting Madonna's greatest hits or Boy George & Culture Club before i do that with his last one, lol.

I hope that after his showcasing Pharell is over, Questlove will let us hear a few. Even if he's talking over them (this is a Questlove exclusive) it'd be nice to hear.

George Micheal, Madonna, Boy George & Culture Club, all of it. The early 80's we were stationed in Europe (My dad did 20 years in the military, we came back into the U.S. in 1984) so i can appreciate it all.

That Lewis Taylor performance was soo flat, it doesn't capture that man's depth in the least bit. After Lewis II i sort've lost it for him an haven't rekindled my love for him yet. It's a crying shame, due to arrogance & pride, that him & D'angelo never teamed up to lay down a cd or two together. It's a damn shame, it really is. Trifling indeed. (excuse my language Rez)

Pridefulness & Arrogance or a Superiority Attitude about oneself, is two qualities i despise in people, but who am i, lol.

Yes, i got a Megaupload acoount and i hit browse to find the Maxwell cd. I gues i have to load it onto my hardrive and do it that way. I'll keep trying.

Rez, Rkelly cd has leaked, it's really not worth wasting a cdr on this trash, but it's out there. That's one stupid man, i tell ya.

Bow I AM a kid of the 80's so I do know it all...well some stuff got lost along the way but "if heard" I still remember it! Remember Go West? lol

yeah I didn't like the "sound" of the performance, but the slide guitar solo is da shizznit! Still like the sound of slide being it old blues slide or Bad Company rock slide guitar! Or Ry Cooders slide! David Lindley also GREAT guitar/slide player!

Stoned part 1 really is a great album! Lovelight seems to be my fav right now, still like it better than the Robbie Williams version! Dude should not have messed with that song! Same as D' doing JB stuff right! lol

I think I might just check out R. see what he's up too!?

but you probably got money to burn, i know i don't. Did you download RKelly's live one, as it's not up there anymore. That man runs that 'sex talk act' into the ground.

Alot of 80's stuff i like but i may not know the name of the artist, as that time frame of music was very plentiful. (Christopher Cross, Micheal Macdonald, Kenny Loggins, etc)

That Lewis Taylor performance was very very dry. I recorded it intially the early morning it came on. Live, his stuff doesn't seem to translate all that well, as Lewis is studio savy. All those gimmicks & tricks live, seem futile. One thing about a good bass player is that he can make or break a rhythmn section. If he don't got 'it' it's all a wash. That cat didn't have it. The drummer was nice but the bass player was deficent, therefore that whole perfomance was forgetable, imho. Let that have been Stuart Zender back there, lol.

I have Anthony Hamilton's first live concert dvd in Alanta and that rhythmn section had the auditorium rocking. Him (anthony Hamilton) & Angie Stone were on tour together (the silk & sandpaper tour) and Miss Angie Stone also put out a live dvd performance which i, like a straight dum dum, didn't purchase when it was being sold for $10.00 @ Tower records.

Did have it's moments. McDonald was there earlier with the Doobies who where/are dope, so that doesn't really count, but ok i'll count "Regulate"!(but that was 90's right?) Loggins was earlier with Messina, but still he dropped some cool stuff...Who doesn't know Footloose!!! Or Dangerzone from the TopGun soundtrack...which btw has a great anthem which was made by Harold Faltermeyer with Steve Stevens, Harold also did Axel F. for BH Cop and Steve Stevens worked with MJ on Dirty Diana! Thinkin' bout it, I have some fond music memories! But shit like Duran Duran or Frankie Goes To Hollywood is big no no for me! Remember Nik Kershaw? NOW THAT is a great songwriter! "wouldn't it be nice"

Stuart would have NAILED that song, this bass player doesn't have OOMPHHH in his sound, its one of the most wack ass bass sounds I've heard in a long time! What's even WORSE is the fact Lewis seems to have backing vocals playing along on a tape! They should've put the bass part on there as well!

I don't know the names like that, good grief. You're good. I also like the Olivia Newton Johns, Cindi Laupers, a lil Barbara Striesand (she's so depressing, a real drag at times)

Yes, with that Lewis performance, it almost seemed like Lewis was a bit camera shy (being on big bad amercian tv & all) but he should've just put it all on the line. I can't entirely fault the bassplayer as it really wasn't his gig to shine on, but he could've embellished the song a bit more. He sounded real amateurish to be on the same stage as Lewis, don't ya think?

I would've perferred to have seen Lewis perform 'Party' off Lewis II.

Your right Rez, Party might not've flew, it's just a whole lot more momentum in the song. In looking at Lewis's performance, it's as if Lewis & his bass player 'threw up a wall or partition' and didn't know how to come from behind it. The perfomance was cold and mechanical. Somewhere in Lewis's mind he might've mistakenly thought to himself that he is Lewis Taylor, a genuis, and won't have anything to prove on front of a national tv audience, just go & check his vanglorious catoluge, right? WRONG.

I agree that Lewis doesn't have Jay's Kays charismatic, gregarious nature. Had that've been Jay Kay & Zender up there, they would've showed their behinds off & said to hell with how they might've been percieved, but would opted to enjoy themselves irregardless. Then again, you can't compare Jay & Zender, as they are both extroverted dynamic personalities, so that's kinda unfair.

Brittish people are naturally mannerly & well behaved, imho, like those english school boys that have to wear those solidarity uniforms and behave themselves, but then you have exceptions like Jay Kay & Robbie Williams.

Rez, you obviously didn't get the memo that it was cool to stay dissin' me at every turn on this board. For that, i thank you.

Those Abbey road clips are fantastic! It's blows my miind how so few great musicans can sound that full & musical, with so few people in the band. That is one UNDERATED DRUMMER. To make it into Jay Kay's band is saying something, ya think? He gets the absolute best out of his musicians.

Stuart left a really big void when he parted ways. He made up 50% of the Jamiroquai sound by his lonesome. His imprint will be forever missed, but i do think he hung it up at the right time.

In looking at the clips, Jay Kay has been at this for a while. He has made a ton of money doing it too. I think at one time Jamiroqaui was the 3rd or 4th highest grossing musicians in the UK, right under Sir Elton John & Robbie Williams & The Spice Girls.

I think at one time, to the European press, Jay Kay's talents were viewed as a joke due to them being unable to catagorize him, but the man has more than held his ground and has constantly re invented his sound & line up.

He has his own lane that he doesn't stray to far away from and it works.

Funny that you also think that way about Stuart leaving Jamiroquai! Watching old and new clips, I noticed that allthough the new bassplayer is really good, he misses what Stuart HAS!

Would you still like the live Lewis stuff?

So I was having this discussion with someone about Voodoo, dude "believes" that the "feel" of Voodoo with everything being off beat was done by editing all of the parts and shifting them (vocals, bass, keys etc), ME thinks this was done LIVE and nothing was shifted at all, it's just "playing" with time! A different take on how things are still IN time but feel OFF time/beat!

What you think about it? dude was really persuasive!

I've been listening to Really Love last couple of days, and I still can't believe how talented D' is. I must have dicected the track to the bone, and it's just amazing how much is in there if you listen closely!

I worshipped this morning & then ran up to the Guitar Center afterward, as something was telling me that i should pick up a accoustic bass, which i did, btw. I was looking at a Micheal Kelly one, but something was wrong with the 'G' string on it. The one next too it (a Takamine) felt just right in my hands (as it's not ever the instrument, but the player) Now, i'm no Nathan East, but i can get around ok on a bass and i absolutely love when people under estimate my abilities. I was in the accoustic room of the store (full of white people) when i felt this over whelming tension come upon me that everyone there was in for a good laugh. People that know me, tell me that i'm a very modest looking guy, which apparently, equals no talent.

I pray & ask for humility & for me not too be prideful or arrogant Rez before i go into these music stores, ever mindful that i never want to leave out too depressed if i hear guys much much better than myself OR not wanting to gas my own head up when i notice people sort've liking what they hear. Like yourself Rez, i've seen some really talented (although very arrogant) players. We've all dealt with those types.

About the Voodoo record, i couldn't tell you. The last time i listened to that record was probably in 2001. I did read a portion of a book entitled (Brave New Bass) where Rapheal Saadiq was saying that the way D'angelo lays back on a song gives the surrounding musicians a hard time sometimes, and D'angelo intentionally goes for that sort've feel, which is his signature.

Things are going great over here! love's a wonderful thing when it works out for one! How bout' you? Never be intimidated by others, NO ONE is the BEST! Its never ending cycle to be comparing to others! At least that's how I think about it! My ONLY objective when playing is to see people dance or do a headnod! if they ain't doing that I'm doing something wrong!

Been checking out some great music lately! ever heard of Antibalas? Great afrobeat orchestra from NY!
Can't wait to see Sly next month on the Jazz Fest! Hopefully he won't cancel!?

Never, ever, ever. Ever, ever. I'm too complicated Rez, i even confuse myself.

I'm not sure i'll ever trust a women with my heart, to be honest. It's too painful.

You sound like someone has locked you down for the summer. Are you taking her to see Sly with you too? Do you think he'll show? I hope those tickets are refundable. Sly about 30 years to late to be running game, what you think?

I haven't heard Anitbalas (sp?) music, that i know of. I'm innundated with so much from albumbase. I might download something & listen to it once & forget about it. Rez, i'm now to the point where i find that downloading is getting to be too much work (and i have dsl) which is trifling indeed.

I hope Sly shows Bow, if he doesn't well to bad, Amy Winehouse is dope to! Allthough I read she might also cancel, which seems to be happening alot lately! But as far a Sly goes...well...this might be the last chance to see a legend perform, even if it's uncomparable to the 70's! At least I can say I've seen a legend perform!

I must say that my current situation was NOT planned at all! I'm just really fortunate to have met this girl!

That show date would be as good as honored, imo.

Sly, i dunno Rez? But i guess it's worth the risk if your right there though, i just haven't read anywhere on the net that he's doing warm up gigs or anything.

That D'angelo single i don't play that often. I wish we could've gotten a whole cd's worth of music from him like that single 4-5 years ago.

Assuming D'angelo has a cd in the works, his main competition is Maxwell, and if Max drops then D'angelo would prolly get pushed back. With D'angelo, i don't care when it drops, i just want it too leak, no disrespect to him, that man gotta eat, but i would like to hear something.

Max has a way more depth than D'angelo as far as the quality of music. I dunno why and i'm not really a die hard Maxwell fan but i'm surprised college courses aren't studying his cd Embrya, under Music Theory. The moods that Max's music sets are phenomonal. I hate to even compare them but Maxwell will more than likely run away with it in the Neo Soul lane, partially due to that stale Soulquarian sound and D'angelo limiting himself to cats that play him like ain't nobdy seeing him. Max approach seems to be a lot more humble (i dunno if it's a mock humility, i'm sure Max run game too, lol)

Max might've pushed his back due to Musiq dropping LuvanMusiq. Then you got Raheem Devaughn hanging in limbo. E badu might got an ace up her sleeve. With Badu though (as well as Max) if her material don't quite hit in the US, she can eat well off of touring in Europe. I'm not into the Van Hunt's, Donnie's or Rashan Patterson's.

Need I say more? lol anyway...its hard to compare D and Max! I like them both, as long as the music touches me...i'm in for it! Allthough D' for some reason has my preference, after hearing his acoustic versions of Africa en Spanish Joint, I just KNEW he should be up there with the legends!

I must mention I enjoy some of what Van Hunt and Rahsaan do! Saw VanHunt live a couple of years ago and he nailed it! Rahsaan...well, dude got skills and makes great albums, but after seeing him live...dude needs to shut the F up!

You keep saying you'd like D's album to leak? why? I'd really like to hear it, but I also would like a "final" version in my hands, mixed and mastered!

not out've disrespect for him, but rather out've anticipation.

I thought it was nice (to my ears) upon hearing 'really love' and noting that D'angelo had sort've kept the pulse on what we, as his fans, would like to hear & still being able to groove us, having stepped away from music for quite some time.

It would be neat to hear what a 33 year old D'angelo has to say, with a few notches under his belt, in regards to life.

It would be phenomonal if D'angelo could make a sucessful re entry back into the music scene, don't ya think! Rez, it seems that once it passes you by, it passes you by. Admidst filesharing wars, admidst the r&b market not being as prosperous, searching for a new label, that's all a heavy road to hoe & that's not even factoring in the most important part, a slamming new record. If it's good, we are going to want more of it, if not, i guess another wasted cd-r, haha...sigh.

I enjoyed Rahshan's 1 cd & a lil of the 2nd one, but after that he kinda lost me with the homosexual thing.

Unless you Fall Out Boy or Maroon 5. It certainly is a stupid amount of work, but do you think that D'angelo could press up his own cd's and release them independently? Shoot, i would even drive down to Richmond and help stuff cd's & mail them, for free.

I mean, D'angelo already got a nice size fanbase.

Few are buying cd's out the store anyway, right? Release it in a few major cities in the US, a few places in Europe, keep more in his pocket. If the cd sold 200,000 copies (which would prolly be a flop for him, he still would fare nicely)

Even if you signed with a major, you still sort've independent anyway, you still gotta hustle, shake hands, kiss babies.

I would take them bad boys to Koch records & call it a day. All D'angelo needs is 1 song to catch, like 'really love'

We oversimplifying it Rez, but he can put out the music he wants to put out.

selling cd's isn't easy anymore, and before you even make a buck, you have to pay back the record company! and since D' is known to work REALLY long on a album, and in the best studios available, with the best musicians, engineers and mixers, you gonna have to pay some serious dollars back before you see your own money for the music you wrote! sure royalties and such are great, but with a new album you can wait for a year before see any of that to!

do you think he would release his new album on a indie label? wouldn't matter like you said, he's got a big fanbase! It surprises me that a label like bluenote or verve have not had any interest (allthough he IS a BIG investment for not having released anything in 7 years going on 8!), I mean bluenote is releasing Al Greens new record, that's not jazz at all! Or better yet imagine D' being on the new STAX label! SIKE!

In response to Reply # 267

Bluenote released Anita Bakers 'You Are My Everything' cd in 2004.

D is taking his sweet time for every nuance and guitar lick to mean how he really feels, it seems.

There must be a lotta drawbacks to moving independently, maybe too much of a risk, but these record companies seem to move at a snails pace in letting these records go. I don't understand any of the in's & out's of a move like that, as all the big guns have major label backing. Rapheal tried it, Lewis tried it, Prince tried it with NPG music but i think D'angelo could cinch it. If he did so, i believe many of his peers might follow suit.

If D'angelo has faith that this one is a good record he should step out now. Strike while the iron is hott. The fields are ripe for harvesting. D'angelo could slay this summer as he did back in 1995 when he caught everyone with they pants down.

I would go for a distribution deal and release music on my own terms. Make himself viable again and let the labels persue him.
