"Photographer's Post"

What you shooting with?

Share a picture you took lately that you are proud of.

If I have a t3i is there any reason to upgrade to a t5i?

Recommend lenses. What lense do you use the most? I only have a 50mm and I need another practical lense to carry.

Recommend a good book to become a better shooter.

Add more questions and talking points and let's discuss.

Photography Q&A.

Don't know if it'll make you a better shooter, but so far its been a good read for me. Little things that are always helpful like an in-depth breakdown on things that affect
sharpness.

I currently use a Canon 5d mkii. Lenses in constant rotation are: Canon 24-70mm L, Canon 70-200mm L, Canon 17-40mm L & Sigma 15mm fisheye.

My latest pic was from the Lauryn Hill concert I covered in Oakland's Fox Theater. https://flic.kr/p/nAqDyQ

The T5i has its advantages such as video auto focus, faster fps, higher ISO boost, etc. But, I would stick with the T3i because it produces lower noise at higher ISOs, more dynamic range and has better pic quality. Just my humble opinion.

Buying a lens depends on what you plan on shooting. My Canon 24-70mm L is my "walk around" lens that I use everyday. When I need longer range for shooting concerts, I utilize my 70-200mm L. The 17-40mm and 15mm fisheye lenses are primarily used for shooting landscapes.

Unfortunately, I don't have any book recommendations but YouTube is a great resource for anything photography related. That's how I learned.

You can check out my portfolio @ www.awwbee.com for more photos.

Here's my flickr link for my concert photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/wasawwbee/sets/

Hope you found something I said useful.

so while you're missing things like a touchscreen LCD, the quality of the pics stay the same.

Id save the cash on lenses or a full frame camera if you really want to waste some money, lol

As far as lens go the 50mm f1.4 is my baby.

As far as books are concerned, I recommend this highly:

http://www.amazon.com/Chasing-Light-Improving-Photography-Available/dp/0321752503

It's goal is to teach you how to look at the world as a photographer as opposed to just dryly showing you dope pics and giving you the image data they pulled.

went to the race for work.

had a hookup who got me a photographer's vest and credential.

went out to the inside of turn 3 for the last 75 or so laps.

at most, I was 75 feet from the track, with no real fence for protection.

Shot with a 5D Mark III and a 70-300 lens

Waited for the car to come by and photobomb my selfie. Here's the actual race pics

as for resources, canon has a digital learning center with lots of good articles, blog posts, and videos to help you

http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/home/home.shtml

If you have a t3i, you prolly don't need a t5i unless you're gonna do a lot of video. lenses are a better investment.

Ebay is the come up sometimes....
The one I purchased was Buy It Now or Make Me an Offer. The Buy It Now price was $50 I think....I low balled them at $26 thinking it was gonna be declined, but they accepted my offer.

I kinda wish i'd have gone for a Nikon F4, but the lowest they are going for is around $100. Not sure I want a full manual film camera though.

The F100's are going relatively cheap too, peep: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_nkw=nikon+f100&_frs=1

I primarily use the 24-85 Nikkor, 50mm f1.4 and Nikkor 105 f2.8d. Sigma 70-200 f2.8 for portraits

Last thing I shot of merit was some monochrome images of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Depends on the style you are seeking

For example it helps if you go

I peeped Philip Toledanos work today.
He has an emotional depth to his work that comes across in his shooting.
I'd recommend more philosophy books and possibly gear you towards portraiture photogs

(All the same content-website goes back the furthest)

My cheat sheet for good pics is capture angles not normally seen and try to offset the subject. Easier said then done, 20K photos later and I still struggle with it.

I don't take pics of strangers, always feel like I'm going to invade their space or they'll assume I'm a creep. My website of over 1700 pics rarely features a human. Asking permission usually gurantees they'll act different in front of the cam. Any tips?

Seeing your pics definitely lit a fire under my ass. But then I would have to rig a darkroom somehow.

I was thinking of carrying a card with me and giving it to them first then take their pictures with their permission but what about when you stumble on something and you want that picture with them not aware of the camera?

So long as you're not using it for anything that paints them in a "false light" (i.e. taking a picture of a dude in an Affliction pic, and using it on the cover of Time with a headline like "is this the face of male aggression?"), or trying to creep on a woman and invade her space, you're totally in the clear legally. There's no expectation of privacy in a public place.

Same here. I'll photograph most scenes if something strikes me as interesting and if they notice, I just smile. Occasionally, it sparks an interesting conversation.

I'm with ya.

from my post earlier: "I don't take pics of strangers, always feel like I'm going to invade their space or they'll assume I'm a creep. My website of over 1700 pics rarely features a human. Asking permission usually gurantees they'll act different in front of the cam. Any tips?"

I realize I'm legally allowed (in public areas) but it still feels odd to me, maybe even more so with how privacy seems to be at a premium anymore. Need to just dive in and start doing it. At least I'm shooting with a less intimidating camera than a big SLR.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/silentintellect/

I still have others that I haven't put up

I started it as a hobby about 3 years ago.. I started with the D40 then traded that in and got the D70. I finally brought a D80.. At this rate I probably trade the both the D70 and D80 in and get the D90 or just get some more prime lenses

critics are welcome, I'm trying to get better (I need to shoot/experiment more)

I've been lazy lately due to school but summer is coming up and I'm sure I'll be shooting since I'll be out more

27. "Those pics are nice, but...i gotta ask....what focus mode are you using?"
In response to Reply # 26
Fri May-30-14 08:24 AM by FLUIDJ

edit: I see from your exif data that you're in AF-S a lot of time....try playing around with different focus modes.
The focus points on a lot of your pics isn't directly on the subject.
I have this problem too sometimes...a lot of times...especially when shooting people.

http://imaging.nikon.com/history/basics/16/03.htm
and from the G.O.A.T. photo site:

"AF-S, or AF-single, means that the camera focuses, and then locks.
This is used for things that don't move.
You point the camera at the subject, hold the shutter halfway until the OK light lights, and then move the camera to recompose your photo while the focus stays locked."

"AF-C, or AF-continuous, means that the camera focuses, and then keeps focusing as the subject moves in and out.

This is used for action.

AF-C works great, but on older cameras, only if your subject stayed in the middle of the frame, right under the single AF sensor.

Used with careful selection of many AF points under AF-Area modes, the D7000 can select different sensors to track motion around the finder, while this AF-C mode lets the D7000 track focus in and out to keep the subject sharp."

Don't take this as hating either please...i'm learning too, and I see some of the issues in your pics that I have in a lot of my own! I'm starting to wonder if it's a Nikon thing?

But looking at your exif:
AFArea Mode - Single Area
AFPoint - Center
AFPoints In Focus - Center

You had the mode set proper, but you maybe didn't have the camera aimed at the sudject? (assuming the subject is the people walking and not the hood of the red car)

So you are working with an APS-C sensor and want a full frame ? On the upside if you are shooting mostly wide angle lenses there is an immediate benefit to going full frame, that's the only huge advantage I see.

FOV on 5D vs. 7D

Unless there is a quantum leap in the dynamic range of camera sensors I won't be upgrading my camera body anytime soon.

Composition, lighting, metering and finding your own vision are the areas to really focus on, hardware is just icing IMO

I have one and I'm fine with it. I wanted a crop sensor though.

Full sized was just out of my budget for my intentions.

To be honest though, I'm just a hobbyist. I find it's the lenses you use moreso than the body.

I have the 50mm 1.4 and the 15-85mm and I'm lovin' life.

60. "Anyone here ever do any smoke photography using incense sticks?"
In response to Reply # 0

its one of the coolest things to photograph, especially on those rainy days when you don't feel like going out. Just setup a black background then using a single off camera speedlight, light the smoke from a side angle, you can capture some really trippy shapes. Then in Photoshop you can adjust the color, etc.

Here are a few I've done

Excellent !! Nice images. You've got some great images on your website as well

The purple image I did by placing a small wooden spoon (curved side facing up) about half an inch above the top of the incense stick. This causes the smoke to gather inside then slow waft over the edges of the spoon, creating dense smoke patterns which allow for some really cool shapes.

Not pride per se, but I've been having fun taking pictures out of cars when I'm not driving

I also love taking pics of my friends: http://livefromphilly.tumblr.com/tagged/friends

>If I have a t3i is there any reason to upgrade to a t5i?

I don't know enough about Canon stuff to say for sure if that makes sense. I played with a friend's 70D recently and that seems like a cool camera.

>a 50mm and I need another practical lense to carry.

I tend to use a 50mm or 28mm (which would be like 31.25mm and 17.5mm on Canon when factoring in the 1.6x crop)

>Recommend a good book to become a better shooter.

I don't read much, but I can recommend a good podcast.

On Taking Pictures is one of my favorite sources for inspiration: http://5by5.tv/otp.

To be honest I would have gotten the Df if that was available when I wanted to move to full frame. All that resolution of the D800 is wasted on me since I just share photos online.

I was on a 15 hour train ride though the Burmese countryside last summer and was shooting medium format slides from the window. It was my first train ride too. Amazing.
I went apeshit when I heard there was a game being played next to a remote train stop station in the middle of the mountains when we pulled up. I've been trying to shoot this game in the region for years. I had less than 5 minutes to shoot before the train was going to pull away.

This FB gallery pic is kind of soft focus-wise due to no editing at the time I posted it-
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=354223401373800&l=ae8673c588

Others, mostly Nikon d300 though I did pick up a old school Fujifilm medium format rangefinder before the 2 month trip to Singapore, Burma, Philippines and Thailand.

77. "Recent/Current: Ricoh GR1"
In response to Reply # 0

I don't know how I went so long without knowing the pleasure of a simple film point and shoot. It's liberating. It's light, versatile, and still gets you the quality of images that I would expect from a bigger/faster Nikon or Canon or whatever.

Also, heading to Italy in a few days armed with Ricoh GR1, and a Voigtlander R3A with a Jupiter-8 lens, and loads of film.

Read: Susan Sontag's "On Photography" for a mind-numbing sensation. It won't help you get better, per se, but it's interesting to think about photography in a philosophical way, and make relationships between it and culture, and art, and society, and representation.

Read: Photo books. Less words, more images is best. You can only really be inspired by pictures, not words. I suggest the Magnum Contact Sheet catalog (http://www.amazon.com/Magnum-Contact-Sheets-Center-Photography/dp/0500543992)

My work: http://cargocollective.com/omography (which is a work in progress)

Shopping for a new lens now, actually (I just have the kit lens at the moment). Debating between a 50mm prime and a zoom lens (for longer reach).

I gotta put my pics up on my site. I'll link here if I get it done soon enough.

Since I've one ever used the kit lenses on the camera's I've shot with (A friend's Canon t3i & my Nikon) I really don't know what I'm missing. The lens I'm looking at has a much larger aperature than the kit (f1.8 vs f5.6 @ 50mm). That'll give me faster shots & a little more bokeh, right?

If you're doing alot of nightime photography or portrait type shots, it's fantastic.

if you're doing alot of daytime stuff, landscapes, etc...not so much

The Nikon d3100 lacks an autofocus motor so it doesn't work with every lens. I know the basic 50 it doesn't work with.

That being said. I love using my prime lenses and it makes taking photos a completely different experience since you can't zoom

I'd still cop older oddball lenses (like a macro or fisheye) and use them with AF. For everyday shooting, I'd rather have that autofocus.

I'd recommend using whatever system you're most familiar with/have compatible glass for already.

I was comfortable with Canon menus from my powershot, but had three good Pentax lenses, so decided to stick with what I had the glass for, and got a K-7.

If you're just doing still stuff, you don't need the most advanced model- really two or three iterations back is fine.

showing a shallow depth of field- sharp focus in one area gradual blurring of the background and the foreground of whatever detailed, up close shots you are doing of food or other tight scenes/items ("bokeh"). you'll need a lens that can be adjusted to that. agreed on keh.com and amazon for used, cheap cams with a used cheap 35mm or 50mm f1.4 lens.

I shoot on a Canon Rebel t3.

I USED to have a t3i until it met a sad, crack related end.

Not that I'm by any means pushing the boundaries of the hardware. By all technical standards I'm not particularly a good PHOTOGRAPHER, I consider myself more of a photographic/visual artist

Here's some recent stuff I'm proud of (NWS!)

It's called "Top of The Tower" and it's at 1717 Arch St. on the 51st floor (http://www.topofthetower.com).

I think it's every Wednesday from 5pm - 7:30pm. Reasonably priced drinks and an absolutely fantastic view:

im thinking about my next camera, something that can shot at night with low amounts of noise, small form factor and potentially FF since I will be using my images for art making

Like a 24mm or 35mm? Seems like my favorite shots were with those lenses in this post. Also having a hell of a time getting close-ups with my 50mm.

I have a 35mm & a 50mm...but honestly i'd be more versatile with a wider prime than the 35mm....
I almost feel like a 35 is unecessary if you have a 50mm...because you'll 9times outta 10 have plenty of space to just back up if the 50mm is too close...

I have a 24mm prime lens but switching gets pretty annoying.

My main camera is full frame though, and only a smaller % of my shots need to be that wide.

So my next lens will most def be the 24-70mm 2.8

my experience has only been with Kit zoom lenses....and they were always pretty crappy overall. The zooms with better glass seem to be really really really expensive.
You're a professional, so it's easier to stomach that kinda investment, especially when you're already working with a full frame body.

for my crop sensor and it's decent.

If you're looking to go really wide you may also want to look into the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8

Just saying that from my experience with the 24mm, you'll find yourself switching lenses pretty often depending on what you're using it for.

But then again, because you're not using full frame, the 24mm isn't truly that wide so maybe it won't be the same for you.

I found it to be a pretty cruddy lense. I'd love a zoom but ever since a friend lent me his 5omm 1.4 I've been hooked on the quality of fixed lense. If you can recommend a zoom that won't break the budget I'd love to hear it. Actually even if it's cost a bit more I'd be interested if it meant I'd only have to carry one lense primarily.

All depends on what you're shooting.

If you're more casual and are shooting events like the protests and stuff, the 24mm is cool to walk around with for the close in stuff. But as with any prime lens your flexibility is limited.

Personally I would love to just around with my 50mm 1.8 but I shoot a lot of events and next thing I know I'm asked to take a group shot and have to switch to my 24.

So if you're in a similar boat as me where you're looking to go wider without having to switch just for that purpose, you may want to look into the 17-55 2.8. It isn't super expensive from the looks of things (bear in mind I'm a Nikon user though so I can't truly vouch for it):

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup/ef_s_17_55_f_2_8_is_usm

All depends on your style and what you shoot though. It may not be as big a deal for you as it is for me. It's just one of my main gripes at the moment, which is why I responded directly to your response and not the original reply.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/tyniepixels/ . haven't updated it in a while, but mostly i've been shooting for this site -- http://www.pancakesandwhiskey.com

my focus is concert photography and i'm starting to get into artist portraits a lot more.

for gear i'm currently shooting with a canon 7D, but looking to upgrade to the new 7D Mark II mostly for the amazing focusing system and better iso performance. i don't really mind having a crop sensor.. i often find myself further away from the stage than i'd like to be so having that crop factor really helps.

lenses - tamron 70-200mm 2.8, tamron 28-75mm 2.8, tokina 11-17mm 2.8, canon 50mm 1.8, canon 40mm 2.8. i literally bought the 40mm because it was metal compared to the cheap, plasticky 50mm. that 40mm remains one of my sharpest lenses, i love it!

without a doubt my workhorse is the tamron 28-75, but really looking to replace it with a canon 24-70mm II 2.8.

as far as books, i don't spend much time reading those, i mostly focus on blogs, random posts that catch my eye. this guy had a great post about dealing with red light post processing in lightroom that was a godsend -- http://www.woutervellekoop.nl/red-light-a-concert-photographers-nightmare/

for my question -- i know a lot of people debate about gear vs. capturing the moment. like i see a ton of photos that get a ton of recognition that are usually underexposed and often times a bit blurry. i think perhaps a bit of better kit would have helped in those instances... (of course not implying that the camera/gear makes the shooter). what are your thoughts on this? i mostly love collecting gear, and trying out the newest things because i'm a tech fiend and i get bored easily, lol.

B&H had the 7D Mk II + 18-135mm Kit + Canon Pixma Pro 100 + 50 pack of glossy paper + 1 year free of Adobe Creative Cloud for Photographers (Photoshop + Lightroom) + Kelby Online training for $1999 + $350 rebate for a total of $149.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1176701-REG/canon_eos_7d_mark_ii.html

I'll sell the printer+ paper for between $150 and $200 - so my total cost will liekly be under $1500. (They have the body only bundle for a total of $1249.)

And those subscriptions are pretty sweet actually.

Have not shot a single frame yet

I'm shooting with a Sony A7. Was using a Canon 5D Mark II before but the similar full frame, smaller size and modern technolgy (NFC, Wireless) made this an easy upgrade. The only lens I have is the 28-70 kit lens. Decent but I need a new prime lens like yesterday. Sony lenses are OD expensive though.

I'm obviously biased, but after having seen the images that come out of this thing - holy shit.

This camera is insanely good, and the rumored moire issues are virtually nonexistant.

I got to go on an amazing trip to the Valley of Fire state park in Nevada with four pros, who were raving about how good it was, and their photos don't lie. Currently working on a video about it.

They are quite expensive! Anyone that considers buying one should be pretty aware of their reasons for the purchase.

Some people buy them for bragging rights, to be sure. However, Leica users are difficult to narrow down, and I can't speak to all of the reasons others buy them.

For me, it all boils down to the shooting experience and quality of the lenses. In fact, its often a conversation starter during jobs. For my own personal work or travel, I've got something that is capable of helping me get what I need, without bringing a ton of additional equipment along.

Now that Sony have succeeded in creating some amazing mirrorless full frame cameras (compatible with Leica lenses), I'll probably invest in one soon. I'd still hold on to the Leica body though. I still enjoy working with the files produced by the M9-P that I have. Technologically speaking, you can find several cameras with far more advanced sensors. That being said, I'm still very pleased.

For all of the material items that we tend to spend our money on these days, its one purchase I haven't regretted for a second.

In response to Reply # 0

On my two digital cameras I've been having an issue with using the flash.

Every picture comes out dark as fuck.

Shit makes no sense, even when I have the cameras in full auto "dumb" mode, the shit comes out dark.

I never really noticed this too much since the vast majority of my pics I shoot with either digital camera are done outdoors an I typically use my Galaxy S3 for indoor pics (cause that's usually what I have handy) and I've only recently shot anything indoors with either digital.

This is also something I've never experienced with film cameras.
