"Alicia Keys WAIT10 years"

puts on baby powder and smacks faces who been downing this girl over her debut)

First off her LABEL built her up and said she was outstanding. All I heard Alicia say was she just wanted to be heard.
Second Im not a fan of this album. I didnt buy it I heard it oncethru real quick but I can tell why she was signed.

So this is a case of label hype on a debut.

But let me ask you real quick

Wasnt David Bowie in a folk/pop rut before he realized his artistic potential with his concept albums? Wasnt David Bowie contrived in the intro?

Didnt Aerosmith have to kick things into gear before they could be the star rock band they were.

Was George Clintons debut memorable? His first single he cut? P-funk was a bad imitation of the temptations.

IM not done yet...

Did Prince at age 20 have everything together? Were his lyricism together? Was his disco fusion DA shit from day 1?

IM not done yet... slaps face with more baby powder)

Was Van Morrison first album was that some great songwriting when he made the break from THEM other than Brown Eyed Girl? Or was it some wallpaper commercial pop rock soul stuff to pay the debt off to the studio? AHH.... Well then tell me why is it after album 2 did Van Morrison take producer control and then all of a sudden he became magical? Ahhhh ...

IM STILL not done yet mf... (slaps harder with babypowder hand)

Was Sly Stones solo 50's doo wop parodies that great? Was Slys first album have any flaws? Was Sly imitating motown and Ray Charles in the early days? Werent the first 3 albums a definite need to make label some money.

IM Still not done yet (POOOW)

Didnt it take Marvin Gaye in his 30's to make his solo debut with other cowriters and producers? Wouldnt marvin be stuck in a rut if he came out solowise

Still not done...

Didnt Jeff Buckley wait til he was 29 to finally release a album "GRACE " when his father started at 18? And had already at least 7 by that age.

Didnt Bootsy Collins sound like James Brown on Philmore on his debut on America Eats its Young. Didnt Bootsy evolve into something way beyond anyone could ever guess with the mutron sound for the bass and the psychedelic funk arrangements?

NOT DONE yet...

Didnt Tori Amos sidestep herself making some lame pop contrived album with her hair and makeup all done up before she released "Little Earthquakes"

still more...

Didnt Isaac Hayes debut be a little rough before he released Hot Buttered Soul the following year? And Wasnt Hayes 30?

Didnt Terrence Trent Darby before he made a classic debut didnt he make some dancefloor fodder contrived project called "The Touch" to get his feet wet?

IM still not done

Didnt Michael Jackson have to get some time in the studio recording doing projects before he became a solo artist that wasnt contrived that was obviously a born solo star? Or did he just come out with Quincy Jones arrangements singin Billy Jean on a light up floor.

Didnt few of these artists have total control over their vision of their first project. Kate Bush and Prince come to mind.

What does this all mean. What Warren C and I and others are trying to tell you.

Contrived nature of somebodys music happens for a reason outside people start changing things or you start changing things or they throw your ass on the street. You really need to watch what you say about somebodys abilities because in most cases when somebody like Clive Davus

If anything we shouldnt blast Keys because I just touched a fraction of a cornerstone of amazing artists who did contrived debut projects some way older and some the same age as Keys.

Wait some more years before you even begin to judge this artist properly. That is what im saying

Because her album "Songs in A Minor" I gurantee you sounds nothin like her demos. This is a acceptance pop soul crossover acceptance album. Somethin you need to do if you are gonna roll with Clive.

Think about past artists and think about how what you hear on a album isnt always demonstrating somebodys abilities at their brightest.

LOOK at all the producers on Alicia Keys album

I rest my case...

everyone from Alicia Keys to The Product to Bell Biv Devoe to Sunshine Anderson (disclaimer - I do not like or own any of their work... just saying)??? Granted, she plays... none of the above do...
oh and for the record... Terence's masterpieces came after Hardline... my opinion :>P

BELL BIV DEVOE hahaha yea the remix lp or Hootie MACK was legendary ...the only reason people liked them in hip hop was New Edition Nostalgia and the fact Hank Shocklee And Eric Sadler hooked them up with some phat tracks. Ricky Bell could have made a classic R&B album though if he got the right producers.

Ricky was the stokley williams of BBD everyone knew he was the star of that group.

Bad album sis bad album. Y do folks keepamking excuses for her. 95% of the comments I've seen on OKP about this horrible album said"...the album is bad but I can see she is talented. Maybe she'll get it right next time around" or "...maybe she'll grow and learn how to right songs and understadn melody."

You are practcing selective reading. the album sucks, please stopmaking excuses. Comparing her debut to Prince's debut is useless simply because Prince's debut was not garbage.

Yes she was hyped beyond belief but that does not make the album suck any less. Damn it seems liek we've been saying this for over 6 months now.

Kramer: What happened to the doll?

i agree with the post not because he is making excuses (which i don't think he is making excuses - when does jlj ever make excuses for artists? he just understands that not everything can be blamed on the artist). the album isn't bad. it's catchy. edgy, no. regardless of whether you like the album. it has some merit. i give more credit to her voice than anything. and i'll afford her some respect for that alone.

as far as prince's debut is concerned...that mf was panned and praised equally. seriously... you might have, i might have enjoyed...but tons of people blasted everything prince did initially and beyond his debut years for one reason or another. cheesy, sex-obsessed lyrics, so-called beatles wannabe (as if everything is attributed to the beatles). his capability at his age was the one thing that everyone agreed was impressive. i'm not trying to draw any comparisons with him and keys beyond this matter.

i think we all tend to forget that it takes time. and for the talent that i feel she has in her, i will await patiently.

"Prince's debut is useless simply because Prince's debut was not garbage."

i thoroughly disagree with. i only "excepted" it because i heard his sophomore effort FIRST. but upon further investigation, it was CRAP. name one song on there besides Soft 'N Wet and Falling In Love that wasn't some drivel.

sure the album showcased his certifiable genius (written, arranged, produced, composed one man show) but for the most part, it was mediocre, at best.

take a listen to "Baby" one 'mo gin and tell me you aren't nauseated. hell, i can go for lyric for lyric in his early days and i don't care to remember one song off that joint other than then the ones i named.

as for Ms. Keys- blah. . .yeah, yeah- she can play the piano. . .but, er um, AND?

with regard to her skills, i'm from Missouri.

Prince's debut wasnt a masterpiece by any stretch. But it did show me things to come/ The kid had something fresh and new. Ms. keys album is retread crap and i I hadnt seen her play live, I would never beleive she had any real talent whasoever. So in that vein her album is garbage and Prince's wasn't.

Again, Jef is going off on on eof his tangents because no one ever talked about her career in fact most went out of thei rway to say that she may have some talent but the album sure as hell doesnt showcase it.

I can think of worse albums with less effort than Alicia Keys BARNONE easily. We all CAN think of worse produced and constructed albums with messages and energy of a nonmotivating nature just filled with HATE.

"Sucks" is strong word in other words I could listen to this album. But I would have a hard time trying to listen to Dennis Wilson album I am sure because of the kind of person he was when he recorded it.

And yes industry producers, engineers matter like a mf. They can alter your shit in a heartbeat.

Artists will tell you this.

Alicia has a ability not just musical but to touch peoples hearts.

AND thats not easy to do.

and to disregard somebody as an ARTIST when the most important thing is she AFFECTED somebodys life. Somebody was listening to cancer or lost somebody listening to this album and shes speaking to THAT Soul.

To say its garbage Im gonna stand out and say YOU are so wrong simply because of those factors alone. I wont even mention past artists but what I am getting at is it is so easy to dismiss something if you dont like it.

But you know what I know SOO well that many people this helped them thru that time they were going thru.

Some artists can get to that level. Alicia is lucky in some ways and some ways she isnt. Her debut is 7 times platinum thats hard to be able to top those sales next time out.

So she is already in a high pressure stress zone to keep J records happy with the numbers.
Prince GRADUALLY grew into a superstar.

It didnt happen like "Wa hoo Im effin Prince give me my money MFs"

People can talk all they want how garbage and how it was pointless it is but honestly

try telling that to girl/boy fighting Cancer or Parkinsons Disease.

Music is a powerful tool to aid people in those times slightly.

I can gurantee you this that Alicia Keys is one of those artists to inspire thousands of artists and working and struggling people.

TO silence or dismiss an artist with that act is not only a crime its tragic that in todays times that many dont understand this "Disc of collected sounds" may not mean somethin to you but may mean the world to somebody in constant pain.

Thats why I can never dismiss somethings worth. Even though I may not like it Garbage is waste. And Id never say that literally about somebodys work because I know everything has a place and is destined to be made or it wouldnt be here.

And Alicia Keys did somethin special with her album btw.

And that thing thats special will be the impact felt years and years on a impression she gave to a young girl or young child.

Like it or not "Alicia Keys" is Clive Davis new Whitney Houston.

And my god Whitney inspired so many and touched so many lives that Alicia is headed in that direction. So I could never say Whitneys music life was garbage even though Im not technically a fan of her music although it has been somewhere in the fabric of my life part of my soundtrack and not by choice.

Alicia never may be a innovator or musical legend but when she reaches those gates in Heaven she can say "I made people happy and inspired their lives thru my ART I did my part"

AND that nesta is higher than any defined verbal term "Crap " Garbage" "MasterPiece" "Mediocre" I or anybody could think of

the fact she did something and shared with the world her work is something so undervalued today. You know why? Because we think automatically "Okay impress me" But alot of us can never see past that. Its not about that. Being Impressed is nice for me but its better for me if an artist on the scene impacts somebody in a positive motivational inspiring way. Alicia Keys is doing that and MAN whatever anyone says about her it doesnt matter. But when we see past that its something special to be able to Share and have somebody smile or feel good after hearing that.

To me even artists I dislike are special because I have seen first hand the power of music on people. We all have seen that to some degree.

There was a special on 60 minutes on Tori Amos and she said after every show women come and hug her and cry like crazy because Tori pressed record with just her naked emotional sorrowful voice "Me and a GUN" This song transformed rape victims and helped get them thru it time and time again. She said whats scary is little girls who just hear the song and 6 years later still come up and thank her.

Another example of music taken for granted.

So me not liking Alicia Keys album is besides the point. The point is I said wait 10 years to see the impact and motivation Alicia has helped kickstart into children and teenagers of today. If she doesnt make great music by peoples standards then at least she can say she helped shape somebodys dreams to chase and go after them.

THERE is a reason Alicia Keys is a superstar and if we strip down the promotion machine of Clive Davis its beyond that.
THIS is her mission and she knows that intuitively she knows what she is here for. She is doing well beyond her part. Puttin herself out in the open.... Its all taken for granted and thats the sad thing. Thats why Artists should always cherish what they do because you NEVER know who is gonna be affected by it and how it will change their lives.

Songs change lives contrary to what naive people may say.

Tat the album is bad. I'm not in the freakin forecasting business. I dont care how good u will be in ten years. If your album is garbage now I wont buy it. Thats all that matters. Th girl clearly has some sort of talent she has not shown it yet. and when you have young artists out there like badu, Apple, D'Ang Bilal (whose album I didnt think was all that great) who put out strong debut albums. All this talk about blaming the mixing and promotion seems completely silly to me, even if it is true/

Is the album good or not.

END OF STORY!

It's a garbage album.

I can say this---I had been waiting on Alicia Keys
to blow up since '96. That's when I first heard the
buzz on her, and I did hear some of her earlier work.
It was dope as hell, and it sounded very promising.
(The So So Def years.)

When I heard this album...it was very disappointing and
completely different than what I was expecting.

Perhaps her first works were not self-produced? To
that I am not sure. All I can say is with one album
under her belt, I'm not dismissing Alicia Keys' career
as a whole. I don't know what she's prepared to bring
to the table in the future. She *could* become one
of the greatest artists of all time. Everybody's got
the chance, though.

This album was disappointing, she is not making music to
her full potential, and I'll keep saying that until
she does.

so give her a break. her album wasn't the greatest, but it certainly wasn't the worst. i'll take it over the new mary j. blige joint anyday. you gotta remember that alicia's just turning 20. she wrote some of these joints when she was about 18. will she ever be a songtress? probably not. but she is a talented musician and like it or not, she's making it very stylish for female artist to sit down and play their instruments instead of shaking her ass in videos. she's really in the mode of a patrice rushen and that ain't bad. you've yet to hear the best from her.

let's think about this a minute.

is she really?

i mean, i'm not saying that she's NOT, but i'm actually asking a question here... is Alicia really that much of a talented musician?

i've seen her competently play classical pieces and excerpts of hip-hop and R&B classics on the piano. but i've never really seen or heard her play anything that made me go "WHOA..."

i think our standards have fallen so low that we're ready to applaud anybody who even plays an instrument, regardless of the quality and invention (or lack thereof) of their performance.

really, tell me where you heard Alicia play that was some serious shit...

you can't compare her to Patrice Rushen except for her image. Patrice was PLAYING.

While I agree... our standards have been lowered... Jeff is right... she IS a talented musician... now what she chooses to play with that talent is a different story all together... to me, she just seems like a drink... one part cutie, one part very needed musician of any caliber in this day and time (for reference notes... please see Wyclef), one part thugged out female ("Ayo! Love is Love!" ... so wack), one part mystical musical genius... please.

been to a roots concert .... over 30. seen some musical renditions of other peoples music ... that's what their WHOLE breakdown is about ....

now if they add a little personal pizzazz, more power to 'em ...

i've seen alicia live 3 times ... twice in a private setting, industry preview type thing, and once in a large arena ...

all her piano playing is NOT rote .... and god forbid she should play some little Mozart recital (welcome to the symphony ... cuz how often does THAT actually change the composition, or even the emphasis of which it's played) ...

y'all don't crucify the child just for the sake of it ...

i haven't. but tell me when have you heard a 19-year old who IS playing some serious shit in these days and times. and don't give me that bullshit about ?uestlove's drumming. most of his early shit was VERY sophomoric. that's why people are so eager to lump him in the top-10 all-time greatest list now. because we've lowered our standards.

i didn't compare alicia with patrice. i said she was IN THE MOLD of a patrice rushen. and remember that patrice didn't start making some serious noise in the music business until she was well into her LATE 20'S. alicia's just a kid. sure she's been hyped, but that's how the music business is today. i think you know that.

i think i was more fustrated at her debut cause i'd seen her pre j records when she was 17 and i saw real ass potential. so if she gets some seasoning i think she'll be straight.

i'm assuming that this post is in reaction to things that I, Nesta and some other people have said about Alicia.

i just want to say for the record: she very well MAY be big in 10 years. i never said that she sucked altogether. i never said that she was "contrived" or "talentless" or any of that stuff. i simply said that Songs in A Minor sucks. and i stand by that. i WILL be looking forward to her next album, though... i'm not rooting for her failure. i WANT to like her, but i'm not going to say the album was good when it wasn't.

comparing her to Prince is silly. For You was not a great album, but its problem (like Bilal's debut) was lack of focus. it gave us TOO MUCH, as opposed to Alicia's which gave TOO LITTLE. same thing with Sly's early productions.

Alicia's album has not shown me anything except that she is a fine, Mary J. Blige-influenced singer. her piano skills have not impressed me. her writing is non-existent. i'm not being given much to look forward to, but i will stay pray that she does better in the future.

but enough of this excuse-making.

That was my point

No where did anyone say that she waas thru. We merely pointed out that it was a pretty boring, subpar album. And if I hear one more dumb mofo say "she's only 20" I'm gonna lose it. So fuckin' waht she's only 20. then dont put an album out until u r 30 and ready then.

The thing is, nobody is been disagreeing with what you say here. For the most part people are not disputing that she has potential, or making predictions about the future.

They (we) are simply saying that this particular album is weak. Nothing you say here changes that, and nothing she does in the future will change that.

I hope that ten years from now she has indeed fulfilled her potential...I don't think it is a foregone conclusion that she will, but it is possible, and i hope she comes through. But that wouldn't change the fact that ten years ago she made a weak album that got far more acclaim than it deserved.

personally, i've never said that keys wasn't viable talent, i just thought that the way her shit was channeled thru to the world's ear was very shortsighted in goal achievement. and the hype that pre-cluded her debut kind of raised the bar a bit higher than she can/would be allowed to jump... that being said, i hope she doesn't rest on her paper thin laurels, you know, suspect grammy nods and the like. and, i hope it doesn't take 10 years for her to realize her potential. i want instant-gratification dopeness! lol..

Though I hope she let herself focus on putting out more raw material, I for one, am not going to dismiss the power of a debut artist's pressures to succeed and please the masses and his/her record company. There have been a few that haven't had to play that game, but most will have to be concerned with this if they intend on making music as a career. So now, Alicia did this. I'm only hoping that each time around, with each album, she has more decision power that allows her to stretch her capabilities. She proved that she has talent. A genius? I haven't heard that yet. But there is a difference between being able to put down good music in the studio and in person. I feel that she has at least, taken her music to an improved level during live performances. She may have produced much of the album, but I don't think she is autonomous. Not from Clive Davis. I'm not really knocking him, just think that they are looking at it from different perspectives.

WHo said she was garbage as an artist and sucks as a musician

wouldnt be able to hold down 2 nights at Radio City Music HALL and thats a fact call it a psychological observation.

I am not making excuses as far as her making a album and it not turning out right sometimes you dont know what the end result is gonna be.

And Afkap I disagree on the "too much" for Princes for you thats not what it was it was the fact he leaned so hard on disco fusion on his uptempo numbers people didnt take him seriously as he could have beeen.

listen theres a reason that album turned out that way and its not Alicias fault.

About waiting til shes 30 to release a alp AFKAP Im gonna ask you to stop being so naive. You know this was her chance and she succeeded on her debut maybe not winning you over.

But at the same time you probably like amateur artists who have just as many or more flaws as Alicia Keys.

As far as her talents on piano dont question that.

She could blow out the spot anyone who criticized her in this thread. Call that another observation

Its easy to watch a performance and be like "Oh shes not that good whats the big deal"

She did impress me on her laid back nature at the piano and ability to capture soulful renditions of Troublleman and Killin me Softly when artists were brought up who she loved to demonstrate. And her ability to play sttide ragtime piano NOT easy but she could switch in seconds and be able to do it.

Im not just talking about the music steps to progression.

Im talking about the inspiration she has caused so Afkap to say wait til shes 30 thats nonsense because Alicia inspired a gang of girls who needed that role model in life and when im talking 10 years also Im saying the impact she had on their lives.

So really thats what makes her debut worth something because an artist has to have a debut sometime. And Alicia was destined to make her debut "2001" because thats what was needed for those girls at that time.

So really what everybody says "she should have waited she should have etc"

Thats null and void because in 10 years you will see these children who listened be affected by her music in a good way at that time in the early 21st cetury.

Singer Alicia Keys has added the horn section Chops to her band for her upcoming "Solo 2002" tour. Chops has worked with The Police, The Rolling Stones, James Brown, Public Enemy, Mutiny and were part of the in-house rhythm section for all of the recordings on the Sugarhill record label. Chops is led by former Parliament-Funkadelic sax man Darryl Dixon (sax solo on "Flashlight" and "Love is Something" ). Darryl says, "Alicia's band is tight and the show is off da hook, you gotta see her live. This sista is extremely talented".

now what other R&B young songstress would warrant a news bite regarding something pertaining to her musical performance maybe

"Janet jackson to use new dat machine for her vocals on upcoming tour" or

"Destiny's child to place their band 100 yds behind them while performing on tour"

like her or not, alicia is attempting to make moves in areas where not a lot of folks are.

my darling Ana. Er'body got a PR machine. My point was that those pr machince's usually give us info that has more to do with portraying a particular image, than manifesting funk on stage. Most "pop" stars bands are hidden like the time playing behind vanity 6. The fact the Alicia is even rolling with a horn section gives her a little more credit in my book.

I guess it's just a matter of opinion, but "terrible" is just too strong a word.

They are far from being as immature lyrically as you said. That 3rd grader analogy you used was way off. You act like the girl is sounding tone deaf and illiterate on her stuff. And if that's what you're hearing I don't know what to say.

they are cute songs. they play well live. Fallin, Mr. Man, Trouble... those are decent songs. "Terrible" is just an inaccurate characterization. Not feeling it, or not your style is more like it...

I told you before: it's not the lyrics that are my problem. you know by now that for the most part, I don't even worry too much about lyrics.

it is the SONGS themselves that drive me crazy! or the lack thereof, I should say… when she is not biting melodic ideas, she is just riffing with her voice, following a kind of groove but never really establishing the structure of the songs.

I think the songs are terrible. just plain doo-doo.

but I've given examples in many rants in the past. the very fact that I can barely remember what any of the songs sound like after listening to the album x amount of times is indication enough to me, actually…

"rock wit you" is more groove than song… and a very intereting groove, either

"girlfriend" has as much melodic texture as anything written by L'il Mo. listen to it and "superwoman" back-to-back and tell me I'm lying…

that song where she rips off "natural woman" is enough reason for her to be pilloried

"fallin"… I know people like that song, but I think it's rather pedestrian… I'll let her have that one, though the drum programming on that track is horrid

I'll go back and listen to the album this weekend and pick it apart for you on Monday, just so it don't seem like I'm hating without cause

Falling, Mr. Man, Trouble are nice songs. 3 aint bad...

but it's got to be done in a creative way… the way she did it was terrible, terrible!

listen… I probably hate every song on that album except one. the reason I mentioned the ones I did is because those are the ones I could remember the titles of. like I said, I'll go back and dissect this album piece-by-piece for you next week.

I don't like "fallin" at all.

I've defended Beyonce to you already, and you had no response to me then. if you had something to say, why did you not say it then.

I think you're caught up in image, Mr. Coolidge. it's so easy to hate on Beyonce because of her image and so easy to want to root for Alicia because of hers. sorry… I can't buy into that. I know how to use my grey matter and it tells me that Beyonce is an infinitely better songwriter than Alicia is. I don't think Alicia has a single song that is as engaging as "aplle pie a la mode" or "fancy" or "happy face"…

Btw, Warren Coolidge loves hims some Beyonce and not just cause she's fine (did you see the pillow hookup in her room???)

Here's what I'm saying. You have nothing to base Beyonce's talent as a song writer and producer other than the fact that she is listed as such on the cd cover. Now the fact that (a)her father is their manager. (b) she obviously is being groomed as a solo entity (c) her main trumpt blower is the other girl in the group, one may choose to question whether or not she is being credited for more than she is acutally doing. I mean if she is being given more credit as a songwriter and producer (meaning that there is probably some ghost work being done that's not being listed ala Lauren Hill) You choose to give her the benefit of the doubt. And you know what, so do I (pretty much). But for some reason you choose not to give Alicia the same benefit of the doubt, when there is far more evidence of exaggeration of producion and song writing credits with Beyonce than there is with Alicia actually having chops and being a decent musician.

I bring up Beyonce not to discredit her talents, but to show the inconsistency of your critisism of one, and crediting the other. When I bring up Beyonce's bootilicious lyrics, you give her a pass saying she writes nice "pop" songs. See, you manuever, and put in context her talents, but Alicia just gets a "terrible" with no efforts at all to put in context, her youth and the fact that it's a debut record...

double-standard

either it's good or not.

notice i rarely give Beyonce any credit as a producer, because i KNOW she aint sitting there making tracks, though i believe she produces and arranges the vocals. and i believe she writes the songs... those songs aren't THAT good that you think there's ghostwriter involved.

why SHOULD i question her, anyway? if the liner notes say she wrote it,i accept it... the same way that when it says "all songs written by Prince" i accept it. so her dad's the manager? look... i don't want to get into tabloid, personal-life, rumour shit.

either the songs are good or they are not. i don't give a fuck WHO wrote them.

let me put it THIS way: whoever wrote the songs on Destiny's Child's last album did a better job than whoever wrote the songs on Alicia Keys' album. how you like that?

(btw... Alicia had writing help on every song on that record except maybe two... and they're still that lame? okay... let's blame that on the co-writers... they stifled her creativity, no?)

why do you say i'm shallow?

because i don't care about lyrics? why should I? 98% of it is all mofos tellin' lies and singing about love and trynna get laid. no matter how artful it is, that's what it all comes down to.

I DO enjoy lyrics, but music is more important to me. but lyricists who I really feel and want to listen to each word they say include Elvis Costello, Caetano Veloso, Sting even… people who are saying SOMETHING. or people who have a unique way of saying the same thing.

otherwise, I'd rather let the music tell the story.

just somewhat contridictory. maybe not even contradictory....

you know a lot about music. You have some taste. yet you come with these statments sometimes that are totally opposite of that. I know what you mean about the lyrics, but that's not what you said. You said, "lyrics aren't important" that's like saying that when someone is talking to you, what they are saying to you is not important. Plus by definition it's not a lie. A lie would be to knowingly say something that is not true. The fact that music is just a communicated interpretation of reality makes it impossible to be a lie. It's art. If it's not important, than how is it able to be analyzed to the point of being truth or falsehood. Plus the music telling the story only works if there are no lyrics. if there are lyrics, than we should look at how the lyrics and music work togethor to either tell a story, entertain, or present something in terms of imagery or a characterizaion.

The next time I take a sick day, I'm going to call our mutual friend whose name rhymes with higher, and call you on the 3 way....

don't bring HER into it!!!

i'm not saying that lyrics are not important... i'm just saying that you got to get me with music before you get me with words (c) Ike Turner

i explained my theory on this before. i AM interested in word MEANING but in the context of a song, i am more concerned with word SOUNDS... someone may be able to tell a story, but if the words don't "sing," i think they are better off writing an essay or a short story.

I todl you, man… most of the music I listen to is not in English (right now I'm listening to Orchestra Baobab's "Pirate's Choice" and affter that, I'm gonna listen to some Bembeya Jazz and Jorge Ben), so I've become more interested in the way that words are arranged musically than in what they are saying textually.

I've listened to a lot of salsa music and Ethiopian music that sounds like the most mystical, deepest thing you can imagine, but when I got the translation of the lyrics, all they were saying was "darling, I love you so much that I will climb a million mountains and swim a million seas"… I was better off not knowing what they were saying and just enjoying the evocative sounds of the words, you know?

i have no problems with love or people singing about it. especially if they do it in an interesting way.

i just feel that singing about love is a crutch the way that rapping about violence or materialism is in hip-hop. i know lots of well-meaning young rappers who pick up the mike and start rhyming about shooting people and they don't even know why they do it... they just subconsciously think that's what you do when you rhyme!

me myself... i've been in ciphers where i've found myself mentioning something about my "gat" and i ask myself, "why did i just do that?" and when i was 8 or 9, writing songs for the first time, why was i writing about "love" when i had never experienced it? i felt that was what music was about...

i tend to have more respect for people like Elvis Costello who write very well on a number of different topics... on real issues and with real philosophy. talking about things like the nature of failure and stuff like that. i feel i really learn something listening to a song like "why can't a man stand alone"...

Why can't a man stand alone?
Must he be burdened by all that he's taught to consider his own?
His skin and his station, his kin and his crown, his flag and his nation
They just weigh him down
You know pride is a sin that we tend to forgive
But it gets hard to live
When you don't have the love in her heart to begin with
Why can't a man stand alone?

Why can't a woman be just what she seems?
Must she be tarnished by men who can only be men in their dreams?
When beauty meets ignorance they shout in the street
Repeating their offer to each girl they meet
The respect that she needs, it isn't a gift
But it gets hard to lift yourself up
When you don't have the strength to begin with
Why can't a woman stand alone?

...than from any love song.

love is part of life, but most people don't talk about it in very interesting ways.

this has given me an idea for a post: "you singers are spineless"… which will attempt to argue that love lyrics are the reason that hardly anybody in R&B/soul/black pop music is able to maintain a very long career.

it's coming next week… but for now, I'm off.

In response to Reply # 50

If we looked in your music collection we would find things that you love that have as flawed as Alicia Keys debut. I think the midget mountaineers album from Peru would be a prime example or whatever it is that would be a example. Matter of fact that goes for everybody on this thread including me. But thats just preference. But beyond Alicias actual musicianship Afkap you are 1000 times fold wrong on her ability and the more you say it the more me and Warren C are shakin our head.

My theory is you and others are focusing on Alicia Keys so much because she did so well and you cant see yet why so many are drawn to her. Its that confusion that makes you think she is "mediocre" because of one platter. But from what I saw on the Carson Daly show her musicianship is not a joke AT ALL. As far as songs I doubt Alicia Keys was given free control of her album and session musicians/producers can change things if they want it to crossover. I bet you her debut was more classical and jazzy before they reworked it into "Fallin" and "Girlfriend"

You mentioned Carlinhos Brown this guy is "image" too and whats worse is he tells journalists why he is so good. So hes just asking for it. And he plays several instruments on his album more than Alicia. So go after him too. Lunge after him multiinstrumentalist protagonist

I stand by that people attacking Alicia would never do that if she only sold a gold record her first time out.

Yes Afkap you can question her lp and the outcome of it but from what I have seen and I was a doubter of her musical ability for a while because I didnt know what she could play. Now that is no more

After I saw her play Trouble Man and Killin me Softly and "What a womans worth" and "Ragtime" 2 different pieces mind you on Carson Daly on a Grand Piano just adlib and Someday will be free on the telethon I know Alicia Keys is no joke with chords, emotion or melodies ,spontaneous musicianship. Alicia even has humor in her performance she would sing the first notes of fallin and be like "psyche" then go right into What a womans worth.

Believe me its a losing mans bet to think Alicia cant hang on the keys. LOSING MANS BET She lives up to her name like Johnny lives up to Johnny "Guitar" Watson" And she can wear sparkles on her stomach show her midriff wear a yarn coolie on her head collab with Shaggy and Swizz Beats and wear Barbie Lip Gloss it doesnt change the fact that she is gifted for her age on the piano and singing wise.

I saw it live and direct without a band. Without extra keyboards.

One Grand Piano...

Carson proved shes the real deal to me.

Just a grand piano and her no pre thought out set just showing her natural gift to be able to communicate to audience thru music. With her voice? Thats a double threat.

The verdict is in Alicia is a serious musician.

If she can double on keys and follow Isaac hayes musicianship wise cmon give me a break this is gettin silly.

If Hayes says shes no joke at arranging and playing your opinion is now as good as Swizz beats on what classical pianists inspire him. "Yo im feelin that guy on the amadeus movie ...phat saw it on HBO the other day"

sigh... every one of Carlinhos Brown's albums has been flawed, but at least he's able to deliver a couple of outstanding songs per disc. and he proved himself as a composer, arranger, producer, session man and teacher for years before he ever recorded a solo album.

idon't know why you're getting so worked up over this, jef... y'know, i'm gonnna dissect that album like i said i would, just so it doesn't seem like i'm hating. when i hear something good, i'll giver her props for it. when i hear something shabby, i will not make excuses for her. i'll do that on Monday, but until then...

and I have to comment on that shit...

\
Forever my lady was a subpar cookie cutter album that wasnt a classic. GO listen again

That was Devante trying to be Teddy Riley and Guy. And you accuse lyrics? AFKAP go get the headphones...you try to crucify Alicia I wont even hear it if you look past this albums lyrics. Do not come at me with subpar album comment after listening to this crossover lightweight platter. And Vocal Riffin? KCI wont stop saying OOO YEA and BABY.

When Devante let go and got timbaland in Diary of a mad band things improved but really Forever my lady is a subpar generic imitation new jack swing release.

Im not gettin worked up Im telling you that your logic on why Alicia Keys is a subpar musician is crap when I have seen her PROVE it live in front of a camera with just a piano.

and the fact you said Forever my Lady like thats a untouchable classic. Give me a break THAT album has as many recording Flaws as Alicias debut. OH my god where do you come from MARS?

and you say Alicia is subpar its her debut just like Forever my Lady was a debut. That album had crazy filler.

Man...cmon and as far as that band comment on the other thread in some cases you can tell who does what and "insular" dont give me that excuse. Synergy my ass some things are meant to be recorded alone. Bands are great and other situations they arent hot. Sometimes a band isnt made to record it period. Thats what Im getting at. 1999 wasnt made to be a band Prince record it never could be because Prince knew how to record it.

Lewis Taylor people wouldnt even know he did it if they brought in a live drummer you would have thought it was a band.

yes, it had filler. but it also had at least 5 memorable songs. it had grit and it had soul. and it had HUNGER.

that's all i ask for... and i didn't get any of that from Songs in A Minor. maybe the singing was good, but what does it matter when the songs are so sketchy, you know?

The negative demeanor which many have expressed forthright troubles a man such as me. When pontificating that Ms. Keys is subpar musician. I just find this outrageous statement to be quite ludacris when one can find many a more worse off album than the one mentioned. What would Ms.Keys say at these boisterous accusations of fraud at pianistics? I think she would be tremendously apalled. The only thing this girl is guilty on the piano is her adoration for Fur Elise.

OH dear...me quite a shift I must say.

#1 - comparitively speaking, alicia is LIGHT YEARS ahead of 95% of her peers (25 & under), when we put her in the mix. do you know the kind of BALLS it took to come out banging on a piano, more or less ANY instrument, and want the "black" music crowd to accept you? the woman coulda played a tamborine and i woulda been happier than a motherfucker. sheeit, most of these "skanks" only care about who thier stylist is, NOT the "music" or the musicianship.

#2 - We could sit here till the next meteorite shower and discuss the "elementary" aspects of her lyricism, but let's get real, as elementary as they may be, they are not bad. in fact, they're pretty fucking close to being good. all alicia needs is a lyrical filter (like mr. kelly does) and we got us a fucking winner. honestly, i'll give her a pass on the lyrics cause she actually plays an instrument! and jr. black radio plays her! man could u imagine if meshell had the promotion that j records has? she'd be multiplatinum and loved like alica is. but we all know that life ain't fukkin fair.

#3 - if we're gonna get into whether or not the chick "deserves" all the credit she gets in the big book of deserving artists, we have no credibility with any argument. why? cause she's only ONE album deep. if we judged great artists on their first albums there would be "very" few great artists. she needs to give me a good 3 or 4 other albums for me to say that she isn't all that good and just got plain damn lucky. untill then, i will say that homegirly has MAD potential and with the right direction she could be outta here.

sidebar: i think she should get bob power to engineer & do some drum programming for her.

did India.Arie's drum programming... hella lotta good it did her...

and Vinegar... you been defending Alicia's lyrics, but you're still avoiding the point that i brought up (everybody's avoiding it, in fact): melodically, structurally... the songs are pretty bad, and especially so for someone who is supposed to be proficient on an instrument and therefore expected to have a better sense of music.

what do you say about that?

reason, the marketing machine cuts into the artistic integrity of an album. i am of the opinion that 'Licia had a lot more in store for us that the marketing professionals at j was willing to let loose. on the same token, if you gonna hiphophooray an artist based on the fact that s/he is exceptional at playing a particular instrument, in this case piano, then let her belt out a piano concerto that s/he wrote and put headz to bed.

happened to india too. i've seen india perform pre blowuptitude. ol'girl can put it down. the album does not reflect the extent of her down and dirty skillz. beleeb dat!

i'm beginning the get the suspicion that they are about to produce much of the soul out of another atlanta soul sensation Donnie. I hope not just a feeling and best beleeb that Donnie can get down!

anyways, maybe album sales for Songs In... will allow her more independence/freedom for the next couple albums.

ANYONE that bigs up Jodeci Forever my Lady and oversees the flaws and the "melodic structure" and lack of "originality" thereof. Completely fronting...

Then completely balks Alicia Keys as a mediocre talent is not only on da crack but da meth oxycontin vicodin angel dust cocaine heroin LSD opium crack but also all household cleaners in a hellish binge of opiates and chemicals turning their brain into TCBY Yogurt.

FOR REAL put down the pipe and the syringe and the pills and give Alicia a little more respect.

BECAUSE Brother...X's we share,555 Nasty,My Phone,Playthang,Treat you,Its allright,U and I,Im still waiting etc

are not exactly original . And taking that into consideration you would have to file it under "lukewarm mediocre reception" To call this album Classic is like saying Chevy Chases rock cover record is a jewel treasure

Devante Swing isnt one of the most original lyricists. My theory is Devante Swing wrote these lyrics on the way to the car dealership when he was buying his fleet of sportscars with his advance money from MCA. I think he wrote the majority of THOSE lyrics because of two reasons he didnt want to lose the HOOCHIES with some sweet "Candy Girl" He didnt want the Hoochies to stay with "College Boyz" at their Community College Tours across Urban America gettin ready to break and get ALL the hoochies.

Thats the only smart thing about that lp. THe facr Devante realized
if we talk real freaky copy GUY's production sound..wear sports merchandise and put on a rough badboy image then the ho's will come to us then as time gets by we can can all shed our goodie goodie image.

Its then when Devante Swing decided to get Tattoos to put him in that badboy image. But 1 wouldnt suffice oh no he had to get 20 or so. Then to top it off Devante had to work for deathrow to prove to the world "Im not from North Carolina IM from G-Town, Exit Loc 187, Cap ya ass lane Compton California

If you are gonna go mercilessly after Alicia Keys over her debut then we can find a whole string of acts and solo artists that you enjoy that have the same flaws as Alicia and whats more: WORSE.

BELIEVE Jodeci is a fraction of what we can name.

diss Devante all you like... it's K-Ci's singing i was mostly attracted to.

say what you will about Forever My Lady... was it an under-written album? hell yeah! but it was WAY more effective than Songs in A Minor.

i'm getting tired of this... i think i better just get down and review this album track by track and get it over with.

you make it extremely hard. Your train of thought jumps from one thing to the next. Now, granted Forever My Lady wasn't the most complex or complete album but it did improve on new jack swing. K-ci's vocal may have been riffing but he did bring a soul that we hadn't seen. Devante may have been doing what Teddy already did but you can't say he didn't put some young boy flavor on it. It may not have been classic but like Afkap said it did have at least five good songs on there. You saw potential and heard 5 good songs. With Alicia, you see potential and maybe one good song. Her shit lacked soul. Period. However, I still look forward to seeing her grow. But as a debut, this just wasn't hitting.

Because it was a joke post.

You want concise. FOREVER MY LADY WAS a subpar crossover effort There is more than 1 song on her album that was a good song. Come the eff on. Less soul than Jodeci. Give me a break.

And Alicia has to deal with 4 guys singing. Theres a difference in vocal harmonies.

You are proving exactly my point. That people dont want to admit for a debut its a "normal effort"
and that it had "good songs" on it for that time and for that market it succeeded in what its supposed to do for a debut artist on that platform.

for any past superstar debut artist or group you can think of from the 90's they suffered with the same thing.

Devantes second album is where Jodeci became "jodeci" soundwise in Production. Forever my lady was "Forever Diluted" Devante was just keeping Louis Silas happy. Thats why they dressed up in the sports merchandise.

Thank you for playing "Alicia Keys Wait 10 years"

non of those acts were hyped as the greatest thing since jesus came to earth to save our souls. they had to prove themselves and make people listen to what they were saying. alicia keys has been forced on us, having every chance to represent with a good album showing her skills, which most people would kill for, and did nothing with it. a rich lable, mass media hype, looks, everything and all she could give us is songs in a minor. who's best song is a prince remake...boooooooooooooo...

Name 10 solo debut's of the 90's in R&B/soul world who are 20 years old and not a subpar okay album. But a debut that has nearly no flaws whatsoever.

Dont say D'angelo he was 23. And I said SOLO DEBUT's and from the 1990's. the age is another factor.

Go to it...

I gurantee you we will have some subpar debatable albums on your list that suffer from everything you listed Keys suffered. Such as :Melodic structure, songwriting weakness, lyrical content, production, artist development etc

101. "that's irrelevant"
In response to Reply # 100

all I said is that Songs in A Minor is not a very good album.

whether or not I can name 10 albums better than it (I can, by the way) has nothing to do with anything.

even if it was better than every other bad album of the 90s, it does not mean that it is not a bad album itself.

I'm not trying to get into relativism here, like giving it points because it was better than this album or that album, or giving her a hall pass because she's 20.

the album was not that good. that is my only issue.

if you want to talk about that, I will… anything else is another post entirely.

what happens is when you're quite opinionated, like you and I are, and tend to lean towards the negative (have to let you fly alone on that one), folks tend to ultra analyze your like and dislikes. It's like, hey, Af likes this, but he talks about that like a dog. Then folks like me and Jef come at you with our preceived inconsistencies with you.

But bottom line is, everyone has there likes and dislikes and sometimes there are a lot of inconsistencies with that. Like me, I get on my soap box on this board and in real life, but still play mobb deep and the eastsizdaz. Life is just a series of contridictions.

I look forward to coming to work, seeing a post, saying to myself, ok, let't find Af's negative response, and then go at you. Be nice if, maybe on April fools, we can have a "What does Af "LIKE" post." with a rule that you can't make any critisims of anything whether they be extreme or not. Even if you rep for the Mighty Mountain Midgets singing in Gallic (that was funnier when Jef said it)...we want to know the real AF....lol.

i cheerlead for so much music out here.

it's just that i have strong opinions and the need to question some things which people on this board accept as God-given truth, hence my negative remarks about Barry White, or black music of the 80s, or what is or is not "soul"…

I think that draws your attention away from all the positive shit I talk about. but then, you know me, Vinegar… I am a bit of a romantic and a miserablist, but I'm not THAT dark!

I'm just an ikonoklast.

not God given truth, but it's just that the majority of savy black music fans find your comments on Barry White, Rick James, Soul music of the 80's, Sade not being soul music just plain how should I say.....WRONG!!! It's the extreme-ism of your comments that goes beyond just an opinion. It's not like you're saying, "Oh I don't really get into Barry White or Rick, or I really didn't care for Alicia Keys album." You're acting like these folks just make you wretch and hurl at the mere mention of their names. lol.

Then when you do agree, it's like it hurts you..lol...

When my James Brown is God post, you were like, "yep"
then made a point to clarify the MLK show story. I'm like damn, even in agreement, dude is like Dark Vader...

I'm telling you man, I don't know what state your in or how the weather is, but you need to run through a field of dandelions man...skip through it....it's theraputic for me...lol

i stand by my statements.

and it's not as if i don't even LIKE these artists. they're just not "Soul Music" to me. there's a LOT of music i like that is not Soul, mind you... that's not an insult!

i just think that if we are going to use a term like Soul Music, we have to accurately define it, and not suggest that any music WE like is "Soul"... it becomes a useless word, then.

See that's my point. I didn't get it wrong. I know that James concert was already scheduled, and I didn't think say that they put it togethor for the specific purpose of quelling the violence. My point was that the "Broadcasting" of the show, and the influence upon James to go through with the show even when he didn't want to, came from political influences that can be traced through the mayor and govenor of Mass. all the way to Lyndon Johnson. This is well documented stuff. James played D.C. the following night for the same reason, to quell the violence. He was a guest at the white house some weeks after this to receive thanks directly from Presiden Johnson.

but that was my point. you nit-picked, and even then I clarified my point and you never responded.

if we can't agree to a social contract for common definitions of words, how can we have any meaningful discussion?

it's like if I'm talking to you and I tell you to pick up my bag for me, and hen you do, I tell you "no!!! that's not my BAG! THIS is what I call a BAG!!!" and I pick up a chair.

sure you're free to have your own definitions of things and keep them as broad as you like, but for the sake of clarity, we have to reach a consensus on the meanings of words and concepts. that's all I've tried to do.

Stop trying. It's pointless. Some words it can be done. But where talking about a word that is relative to the user. It's called connotative or something like that (took a logic class like 10 years ago, too long).

How can we have meaningful conversations without the ability to take our own possesion of words and their meanings. Especially when discussing art. This artist I know spoke on how silly it is to discuss art in absolute terms. It's just not logical to do that. Inanimate objects yes, but not music.

I already did. I spoke on how great it was growing up when male artists appeared to be mature men to be looked up to, like Marvin, Issaac, Barry, Teddy, Al, Curtis, etc. I talked about the benefits that had on the self image of people of my generation and compared it to today. Today you have grown men portraying themselves as high school boys, just to appeal to younger people. I discussed how this is harmful to our youth and artists are passing up a great opportunity by dummying down their music and their image...

it's not just "inanimate objects" that have to be well-defined, Warren... can we have a meaningful discussion about "love" when i am using that word to mean what YOU call "hunger" or "boredom" or "anger"?

the problem isn't that u're critical, it's that u have to, as a critic, learn to "take things for what they're worth". meaning, alicia, even though she's as old as some others at their great debuts, ....alicia is NOT those artists. she is doing HER art. therefore, i believe that she's doing the thing that SHE does. i don't expect her to give me a stevie wonder debut cause she isn't Stevie, she's alicia. i don't expect artists to be like other artists, even as good as others, it's not fair. i judge them based on thier "earnestness". it seems as if alicia put forth an "honest" effort with her album. is it as good as whitney houston's debut? no, but it's not supposed to be cause she isn't whitney. she's alicia. i DO expect her sophmore album to be way better than this one, cause she's supposed to "grow", but grow in her own soil. if she does that, whether i buy the album or not, i will give her credit for being the best HER, not the best of all of the greats of black music.

i know i'm rambling.......

to have a Stevie Wonder debut, either!

you're talking about something I never said!

I didn't even say anything about "debut" or "honest effort" or anything.

I just said that, objectively, Songs in A Minor is not that good of an album. yes or no?

then we can dispute whether or not she worked hard, whether she will grow, whether it was sabotaged by someone else.

IS IT A GOOD ALBUM?

answer that.

whether or not it was a good album without putting it into it's proper context. Debut, her talent, her potential, the state of todays music, etc. If you're not going to compare it to other's works at least put it into it's proper context.

Now that's different if you just don't like it, but that's not what your saying. Your saying that it's not a good album which is different than saying you don't like it.

LIL' FAME: Kenny G is just like "God damn!" John Coltrane's alright but... I would buy a Kenny G CD. Coltrane's not like my era. But Kenny G, he makes music for black people and that shit is so beautiful. It's like the classical soul and the R&B soul when people sing, Kenny G plays that shit and makes it sound like it's singing, nigga!
BILLY DANZE: And Phil Collins, that's our homey, though! You don't like Phil Collins? You crazy! Phil Collins is dope, come on!
LIL' FAME: I bet if I do a song with Kenny G that shit would be huge. I'll do some brand new shit with Kenny G, and that would fuck everybody up. I would do it and then you'll label it a crossover. For real, I wanna do a song with Kenny G...

i'm telling u, alicia needs a lyrical filter and she's on her way. her strength is that she's strong. get it? mary's first album didn't have any many moments, but who woulda thought that my life was gonnna come from the lady that made what's the 411?

i guess that's what it all comes down to... i think most of the stuff you mentioned is mediocre. but that's okay. i also happen to like What's the 411? better than My Life.

i don't think Alicia needs a lyrical filter. apart from the fact that her lyrics are the LEAST of my problems with her songs, i think a "filter" is used to separate excess material... i don't think she has nearly enough stuff to filter!

but it's all opinions...

hope she lasts that long.

things that could happen:

- she gets jerked by label(s)
- she gets jerked by management
- her head gets big and she goes off the deep end
- some big music shift comes along (neo-soul plays out)
- she just plain never reaches her potential
- etc.

Absolutely no label in 2002 believes in artist development. Sure the girl is talented. Overrated, but talented. Consumers are so fickle at this point it might be harder for her to maintain a record deal with anyone if she doesn't conform to what the label wants. Remember how hot afrocentricity was in the early 90s. Where is Arrested Development now?

Afkap you cant name 10 and you know it because if you do you are gonna get called on the albums you pick on every problem you had with Alicia Keys album that these have the same problems you listed. From the 1990's... and the have to be 20 yrs old and they have to be R&B/soul releases.

Because my point is a debut is just that a debut. Its a beginning. I dont debate the fact that its a average release. We agree it could have been better BUT she definitely can be somethin special in the NEAR future. Shes not gettin a hall pass because shes 20 but the fact is she could hold her own in a performance if some other artists crossed you listen to crossed paths.

_Blowin' Your Mind_ wasn't a real album, and wasn't recorded as one. Van Morrisson didn't even want it to be released. "Brown Eyed Girl" was a single in the months before, then they cobbled together some studio tracks and alternate takes.

His first real album was _Astral Weeks_, which is also his best.

>Well then tell me why
>is it after album 2
>did Van Morrison take producer
>control and then all of
>a sudden he became magical?

He didn't take producer control. Lewis Merenstein produced _Astral Weeks_, and even though on _Moondance_ Morrisson got the credit, Lewis produced that one too.

>Didnt Tori Amos sidestep herself making
>some lame pop contrived album
>with her hair and makeup
>all done up before she

No, she was in an awful pop-metal band called Y Kant Tori Read before she went solo. It was definitely contrived, but it wasn't her solo debut.

about tori amos ...and her band. But it was her first project. My point was these people debut shouting are barking up the development artist syndrome without calling out other artists. Which I see oh so often on the net.

I said puts on baby powder and slaps your faces)

NOT my face everyone who is downing Alicia Keys as a musician and artist.

This is from a repeated jesture that the 2 retro near broke pimps in the "How High" movie do a few times to get laughs they put babypowder on their hand and pimpslap the victim. when Method and Redman arent in the scene they do this a few times.

What I mean was some people need to be pimpslapped for verbally attacking this girl while their " musical heroes" of the past had lackluster/subpar/mediocre/average debuts at their age and its all water under the bridge in that case. But Alicia Keys? its time to get the whip.

Basically when all said n done Alicia is just getting a beating because she is at the top of the charts and her debut didnt live up to expectations.

...that I find difficult to accept.

Jill Scott, India.Arie, Lil' Alicia - no doubt they all got talent. I will not sit here and claim Adriana Evans' and Laurnea's debut's were wayyy phatter - they were not.

BUT

at least they had indications of brilliance to come, a foundation for a future masterpiece (maybe, maybe not). Alicia, Jill, India, etc's overwhelmingly immediate hysterical second-coming popularity is a bitter pill to swallow, in light of the fact that we done been here before, and other's weren't given they due like this. I know that all three of them have certianly put MUCH work in pre-major-label recording, and that they do deserve success and recognition, but nowhere near the degree they currently bask in.

and the Grammies?

Dr Dre can get nominated over George Duke (Individuality, Cool, Ellington tribute, In The Moment - all in the same year???)

It's just hysterical.

He is a genius I love his brazilian album "Brazilian Affair". I love alot of his work. I love his session work with Zappa. I love most of his solo work. I havent heard "Cool" yet but what he did on Rachelle Ferrells album is tight.

I need to get Cool and After Hours.

He did a Ellington Tribute?

He should have got a grammy for his composition "Muir Woods Suite" couple years back

Because People cant believe a beautiful young woman who sells so much on a major label is really that talented. They are blinded by the hype and illusions of her actual musicianship. I mean hardly none of them even thought for a second to maybe see some rehearsal footage to see what kind of musician Alicia Keys is before they blasted her for mediocre talents. Which to me is total bullshit

To me Theology its not a surprise they doubt her abilities. But can you really tell someones overall musicial talents off one crossover lp and some performance clips? No and they are trying to play "producer" and its obvious no one really knows what shes capable of except Keys herself.

I even said the lp was lightweight and I know why it was done and if these people cant figure it out on this thread then they are naive. Its the Industry

Let me just say it again I saw Alicia do 2 Scott Joplin pieces note for note on Carsons show to demonstrate what she grew up on.
So basically Stride piano isnt easy to play and she could play it with ease or near ease. Where most wouldnt even be able to hang.

So this talk of Mediocre talent for her age needs to go out the window.

And if you notice there isnt a list yet of 10 unflawed or near flawless debut solos albums from R&B/soul for 20 year old artists from the 90's to 2001. Because nobody can make one because they know they are average debuts just like Keys. Hence I prove my point again for artists.

Why? because as I said Artists at that age usually are not in the game this strong at that age or they are too insecure to come out. What Alicia did is a feat in itself.

and whats more they know it. Notice no one called me out on the Sly Stone comparison of his debut album "A whole new tbing" because Sly knew it lacked something because he was trying to get into the game. It was an alright album but my point is debuts are always in need of improvement in most cases. But if even Sly said the first 3 albums he was just jonesin around and werent serious efforts before he got to business then there is hope for musical growth and expansion from Keys. But it is up to her and fate.

And this thread wont be resolved til 10 years later but something is telling me I am going to be right and people will have to eat their words with Prego Sauce. Call it a feeling.
