The Fulfillingness album was put together in 1974 w/songs shelved from earlier albums, and some newer material. (I read that, I mean.) Do you know which are the old and which are the new?
Since I've found no source that provides detailed info on when Stevie recorded what, I've tried making it out based on the tone of the songs' themes, his vocals, and the arrangements. From what I can tell these are the newer songs: "Smile Please", "Heaven Is 10 Zillion Lt. Yrs. Away", "You Haven't Done Nothin", "It Ain't No Use", "Bird of Beauty", "Please Don't Go", and "Creepin". Stevie was recovering from a serious car accident - he'd had a near-death experience. All of these songs have a certain 'dark' tone that I'd expect to hear from someone who'd been thru an such a thing. Well, 'dark' for Stevie. Okay, maybe muted is a better word, or melancholy. They're not depressing, but they're the kind of stuff I'd want to hear if I were depressed.
I suspect these are the older ones: "Too Shy To Say", "Boogie On Reggae Woman", "They Won't Go When I Go". I suspect these are older b/c they all remind me of stuff I've heard on earlier albums. They're all about Stevie Alone w/the keyboards. No guest vocals...very few (if any) guest musicians. "Boogie On" has a silliness/lightheartedness that recalls "Sweet Little Girl" & the end of "Love Having You Around". "They Won't Go" is about as heavy-handed as "Do Yourself a Favor" and even more dramatic. It also has the vocal tricks he'd played around w/on "Do Yourself" and "Jesus Children". "Too Shy" recalls "Been So Long" and "You and I". The keyboards & piano do, I mean.
I wish Cecil & Margouleff would write a book about - or hell, I wish ANYONE would write a book or do some documentary about the 70s albums. Like the one Per Nilsen has done about Prince's music from 1978 - 1988. ________________________________
