"The "PUT PEOPLE ON!!" Post..."

***********************************************
Rules: Make sure to announce your tastes before you have me out there buying some BS!! And Rate the CD with a brief synopsis! Me First!!
************************************************

DivineVersatile...purchaser of over $500 of CD's within the past month...will now put you down on some bangers....

FYI...my tastes are decidedly "Sleepy's Theme" Adriana Evans Laurnea Fertile Groundish...so if you hate Jamiroquai...don't buy shit I recommend.

********DVS'S NEW HOT SHIT LIST!!!*****************

Groove Collective: "It's All In Your Mind" Rating: @@@@

Vibe: Instrumental, ill horn section...most hip hop flavored of all the Groove Collective releases...also, its not an import so it should be affordable at Tower. (Also...check out "DANCE OF THE DRUNKEN MASTER" and their self titled debut...I didn't really feal "WE, THE PEOPLE" aside from the track with Vinja Mojica)

Omar: "Best By Far" Rating: @@@@ 1/2

Vibe: ITS FUCKIN' OMAR!! High Points would have to be "Something Real" (dance groove!!), "In The Morning" and "Sylveste (Lounge Lizard Mix)"...the entire album is banging and is tied with my other favorite Omar album. More on that later. E. Badu shows up for a duet on the cover of Curtis Mayfield's classic "Be Thankful" (its' tight...but not my fave). THIS ALBUM IS A MUST HAVE. (Oh...by the way...my other favorite album is "THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG"...if not just 'cause ODB shows up)

Minnie Ripperton: "Petals" Rating: @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ 1/2

Vibe: MinnieMinnieMinnieMinnieMinnie....oh I love me some Minnie. Buy this album if not for her classics...then do it for her Rotary Collection and the stuff with the group...aw, damn...I forgot their name...but they were on some Woodstock funk. My favorite songs on the album, though, are "Take A Little Trip", "Inside My Love" and "Perfect Angel"

Lewis Taylor: "II" Rating: @@@@ 1/2

Vibe: Lewis sounds heavily influenced by Marvin, Curtis and some other legendary soul cats. I almost didn't buy the album 'cause my man was telling me he was the next Prince...I was like HELL NAW!! And I'm right...he's not. But This album is banging end to end...and so does his self-titled debut, which I bought on the strength of this album. They sound beautiful playing end to end...but are imports, so get ready to dig for them.

Shuggie Otis: "Inspiration Information Rating: @@@@@

Vibe: Ask JeffLee or Gravity. Also, the break on "Strawberry Letter 23" gets replayed over and over again...the original beats the shit out of the Brother's Johnson's version. MUST HAVE!

Julie Dexter: "Peace Of Mind EP" Rating: @@@@

Vibe: Julie toes the line between new jack soul and drum and bass on a couple tracks, with a lil' carribean flavor tossed in. "Catch the Vibe" is worth the price by itself...but you toss in the title track and you'll see why I can't wait to hear more from her.

Other Mentions:

Rad. : (Both "Higher Plane" and "Make Every Second Count" are worth the looks you get when the record store asks you "WHO???")
Mondo Grosso: "MG4" (Album gets a 3 1/2...but I recommend it highly...'specially if you love N'dea Davenport and Amel Larrieux)

***************DVS's Old Skool Must Haves*****************

Quick Rundown of my collection staples.........

D*Note: Criminal Punishment (@@@@ 1/2)
Johnny Hammond: Gears (@@@@@...'specially if you like Donald Byrd)
The Best of Donald Byrd (@@@@@...'specially if you like Johnny Hammond)
Brand New Heavies: self titled debut (@@@@@..."STAY THIS WAY" is still uneffwittable...this is a supreme road trip CD)
Miles Davis "In A Silent Way" (@@@@@...a.k.a. Miles' Davis Electronic For Dummies...one of my favorite Miles Albums)
Outside: Almost In (@@@@ 1/2...Omar shows up on a nice portion of these tracks...Outside is nice by themselves, though)
Al Green: "Call Me" (@@@@@..."You Love is The Morning Sun...shining so brightly...."!!! This is a classic album...would you believe my non music listening to daddy put me on to this?)
Esthero

I'm done...who's next?

You want my love and you can't deny
you know it's true, but you try to hide
You turn down love like it's really bad
You can't give what you never had
Well bless your soul, you can fool a few
But, I know the truth and so do you
You can't hide love, you can't now
You can't hide love, it's got ya
Betcha you want my love, I betcha
You can't hide feeling inside
You can't pretend there's nothing there
Girl, I look in your eyes, I see you care
So why not stop trying to run and hide
You won't find out, if you never try,
You can't hide love, you can't now
You can't hide love, it's got ya
Betcha want my love, I betcha
You can't hide feeling inside
Love has found the time to kiss you
can you find the time to listen
Life found the time to bug you
can you find the time for blessing.-ewf

Well...I will admit that I liked 1 better than 2...but I felt like he came with it on "II"...

But "II" was the first I heard...I had to search for Lewis "I" for weeks.

But...you really didn't like "II"? I love it...but assholes and opinions have some strange correlation. More on that later.

That Mondo Grosso feat. Amel is effing ridiculous!!! How is the rest of the CD.

You should check out the Kevin Chandler Band. It's this cat from Chicago and the brotha is nice. It is a independant release so it may be hard to find. I got it hear in Atlanta. I'm definitely going to check out this Shuggie Otis. Everybody keeps raving about it so that will be my b-day present to me.

So how good is the Groove Collective CD? I've been diggin them for a while. I really didn't dig Declassified though. Julie Dexter... I need the full length now!

I saw them in Chicago at the Funky Buddha Lounge, they played some cuts from the new CD.

I hope to hit Atlanta soon...I went to Morehouse and spent a nice amount of years there. ATL's Tower probably has that new Laurnea album...I can't get that here either!

nature- for all seasons- clocks in under 50 minutes, but every track is good, you can tell he studied nas but hes nice on the mic and has a voice of his own, good storytelling joints, good street stuff etc. Good production and good lyrics, worth your dough trust it

yeah, it's very good. who woulda thunk it-- an Latin take on Kraftwerk's ish.. and it sounds so good.

it was actually produced by this guy Atom Heart, who's an incredibly prolific electronic producer. he crosses over into many different styles, from hardcore ish to..well, this!

worth checking out indeed

In response to Reply # 27

this is the 2nd album from UK soul/hip hop production team Rae & Christian, and is a solid follow-up to their well received debut.

it features Bobby Womack on two cuts, the sublimely soulful first single 'get a life', and a cover (don't have it in front of me-- hell, i haven't actually BOUGHT it yet.. i work part-time in a record store on the weekend and thus get to listen to a lot of ish..i WILL buy it though.. but i digress)

the Pharcyde are also on two songs, and sound as in form as they've ever been-- great ish.

the album ranges from hip hop to funky instrumentals complete with scratching, soul numbers, latin-- it's all very laid back, and is definitely a 'grower' of an album.. working it's way into your subconscious every listen. well worth checking out

rating: 7 1/2 out of 10

Mike Patton (former lead singer of Faith No More) fronts this band, with their fusion of jazz, metal, gypsy, mediterranean, polka, techno, gothic, ambient, noise, funk, bluegrass, and a whole lot of other experimental shit. This is their 2nd album (in '95).
If you're on the irritable side, DO NOT listen to this album.

Mr. Bungle- "California" @@@@
Their 3rd album, in '99, is more mellow and digestable. This gives the eclectic qualities of them, but with more sane flavors. The name of this album pretty much describes the album's style. It's sunny and bright and full of optimism, even when they're dealing with unpleasant issues. Some songs have that "surfer music" appeal. A couple of songs on here are on the "Spain"/ Mediterranean side. One song, "Bionic Vapour Boy", is a funk explosion with robotic nuances on some '70s/early 80s shit. "Retrovertigo" is a REAL song, starts out as a ballad then forms into the hard rock side (real mellow).
"Vanity Fair" can only be discribed in one word....... DOO-WOP.

Def Jux presents.... Company Flow @@@@
If you're not a Company Flow (El-P, Big Jus) fan, then DON'T buy this album. I will say, however, the track "Simple" is very reminiscent of Bomb Squad production (Public Enemy). Very hard-edge, heavy bass, grinding guitars. This is only an EP release.

It's da mad face invasion!!!

I found both Fertile Ground's "Spiritual War" and "Perception" on break...

Spirtual War I already knew was tight...but "Peception has me disappointed.

Why, you ask? Well..."Perception" is a re-release of "Spiritual War" with a few tracks added and a few taken away. I wouldn't have got it if it hadn't been raining so hard outside and I wasn't rushing back to work...I didn't have $15.99 to spend on 4 extra songs...

Bye for now.

You are right Lewis is not Prince by any means but lately I find myself listening to LewisI way more than any other Prince album I own (and I own everyone possible). I don't know if it's the lyrics, the harmonies(ooh they make me melt), or the sheer genius in his song form but it's love, pure unexplainable love.

You and i have pretty similar taste. So here some of my most recent puchases. Also, just out of interest, does anyone here like Incognito/ have any of their albums?

Ratings out of 10:
1=Pants
2=Barely listenable
3=Poor
4=Generally poor but has redeeming features
5=Average
6=Good (getting there)
7=Quality music (good solid album with no fillers)
8=Excellent (Wow, this is amazin')
9=Exceptional (Just go buy it now!)
10=Classic (Reserved only for undisputed classics)

Rad/Make every second count- Finally arrived and well worth the wait. Nice arrangements and a versatile voice. Old Worn shoes is THE track though. (7/10)

Mondo Grosso/Invisible Man- Mondo Grosso are much like an japanese version of incognito. Thier older albums are quite difficult to obtain though, which is a shame. Only six tracks, but none the less essential. (7/10)

Fertile Ground/Perception- DAMN, this is an amazing album in the best Soul-Jazz-Funk tradition. I cannot reccomend this enough. Just buy it! (*Worthy of Note* This album is a COMPILATION of tracks from their previous two albums)(8/10)

Blaze/Natural Blaze- This is simply a beautiful modern house record. Including elements of Soul and with very jazzy production, this is one of those albums that you can move to or just sit back and listen. Lush. (8/10)

Ski Oakenfull/Life Changes- I have to say i was just a tad dissapointed with this album. It's a case of 50/50, some of the material is good and some of it is just OK. (5/10)

Breakestra/Live mix part 2- This album is so much fun to listen to. It's pure unadultareted funk with a twist. Suberb!! (8/10)

Alpha/Impossible thrill- Second album from these guys, signed to Massive Attacks "Melankolic" label. This album is much more accesible than their previous offering, but sticks to the same tried and tested formula of sombre beats and laidback vibes. (6 & a half/10)

Avelanches/Since i left you- This australlian group will be absolutely massive this year. The UK press have already said that this is one of the albums of the year (and it's only April!!?) I'm not that impressed, it's actually quite a poppy album really. Still it makes a good party album and these guys certainly have fun with thier samples. (6/10)

Abraham/On the surface- Comparisons to Portishead have already been drawn, but i think Abraham offers a lot more than a Portishead clone. This is only 8 tracks long but is well worth a look. Reasonably dark but somehow uplifting, this album also has elements of folk and southern fried country in the mix. Rachel Cumming (aka Abraham) provides the excellent vocals throughout. (7/10)

Audiomontage/Snert- This is a bizzare one to say the least. Modern breaks, beats and house rythms coupled with a distinctly 80's, jazz fusion sound. Amazingly it all falls into place quite nicely, with some of the material sounding a little like Jazzanova (particularly the sixth track Barracuda). (6 & a half/10)

Various Artists/Strange Games & Funky things mixed by DJ Spinna- BBE records have produced some amazing compilations over the past 5 years and this is no exception. Spinna lays down the funk superbly with tracks from:
Gwen McRae, Minnie Ripperton, Don Blackman, Roy Ayers, Rick James, Donald Byrd, Bobby Womack, The Barkays, Leroy Hutson.........(3 CD's & with nice packaging too). (8/10)

Snooze/ Man in the Shadow and Going Mobile- Think similar to Alex Gopher. Soulful, beautiful jazzy downtempo sounds from France. Both albums are well worth investagating, but Going Mobile has just come out and is (in my opinion) slightly better.

Goldfrapp/ Felt Mountain- Anyone who has heard Trickys "Maxinquaye" will be aware of one of the guest vocalists, Alison Goldfrapp. This is her solo debut. Heavily influenced by Portishead, Ennio Morricone and John Barry. Wonderful dreamy soundscapes and ethereal vocals from Alison.

OK thats it for now.....

.....but there's plenty more they came from.

Peace

..and not just cause i'm australian

Since I Left You is amazingly well done-- 'this is a journey.. through sound' (c) a really overused sample. It is designed to take you on a trip-- and 'fun with samples'? understatement, indeed. the album samples incredibly diverse sources, yet weaves them together seamlessly. (i don't know how the fuck they got clearance for most of it, especially given ?uest's breakdowns on sampling)

my album of the year so far.

incredibly good.. believe the hype. worth full admission price if only for 'short circuit' which sounds like herbie hancock's 'rockit' colliding with prince's 'ballad of dorothy parker'.. and yet there's so much more to the album than that.

the first single 'one more time' is not really indicative of the album's sound-- instead, it is reminiscent of their last album's sound.. one more time. more evidence that they do have a sense of humour-- the last, and longest track, clocking in at around 10 minutes.. is called 'too long'. and yet it isn't-- more of a testament to the high level of creativity in their production, which is second to none.

the album takes cheesy 80s ish, and makes it incredibly funky. who would have thought a David Lee Roth guitar solo could sound so good (and played on what sounds like a toy). the intro to 10cc's 'i'm not in love' is turned into beautiful ambience. i'm continually discovering so many more moments that just kill me. it is a LOT of fun to listen to-- the tag of 'best dance album EVER' is more than justifiable- discover it for yourself ASAP
rating: 9 1/2 out of 10

Genesis Experiment:
Rating:@@@@
Critique: For a demo this album is surely a piece of excellent material. These brothers out of Chicago, one being originally from Memphis, put together some unique material. Some of the choruses bore me, but I can live with that. Definitely a must have in yo CD changer.

Now for the Minnie Ripperton Collection:
Petals:
Rating: @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@....
Critique: next to the Stevie wonder Box set this is the best anthology I own. If you like music you must have this.
Rotary Connection(self titled):
Rating: @@@@@@@
Critique: You thought you knew shit about Hip Hop?? think again From the intro of Jay Z- vol 3 to Bonita Applebum samples this late 60's early 70's alternative pop/r&b/ group put out some classic ish.
Songs/Hey Love (Rotary Connection):
rating: @@@@@@@
CRitique: Liked it almost as much as the above and also includes samples you can find on Smif-un-wessun material as well as a couple other classic hip hop tracks
Come Into My Garden (Minnie Solo):
rating: @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Critique: This is Minnie's first Solo LP and it is definitely a cut above her rotary connection stuff, another Lp filled with hidden hip hop loops, but that is not important, what is important is that it is another example of why this beautiful woman was and is the geatest singer of the last 50 years if not the century. Yes fire until I hear rachelle Ferrelle again I will maintain my stance.

Aceyalone- Accepted Eclectic:
Rating: @@@@@@
Critique: Is there any doubt that next to Kool Keith Acey is the dopest emcee of all time??? I thought not and he proves it again on this classic LP. He finally acquires beats that are up to par with his lyrics. Thank you Alchemist, Evidence, and Fat Kat for helping the Coney island styler out.

Slum Village- One
Rating: @@@@@
Critique: I dunno if this is a bootleg or what, but unless you are from the D I doubt that you have even heard half these tracks. It includes all of the J-88 tracks complete with different versions of most of them, the Look of Love track with the Tribe beat is some classic shit. Plus who knew that the joint they did with Kurupt was actually a remake of a song they did earlier. I sure as hell didn't. As must have for all slum fans. I just hope they got money from it, cuz it has no liner notes and the disc looks like a CD-R. Although I did get it from Hiphopsite.com and they don't usually put out bootlegs.

Stevelove and Dj King Tut featuring Bananaman- The Replacement Killers:
rating: @@@@
Critique: Next to 25/8 this by far their best combo of freestyles and beats in recent memory. Video Hoes is perhaps the best intro this guys have ever had and it sets up the album to be great from the start. Although they have yet to reach the success that they once had with Planet Erf and the Black Nike Jacket, those being their most talented works. These guys are on track to blow up the spot again with their next freestyle banger. Watch out in yo mailboxes. You may be receiving a letter bomb soon.
