"Is Biggie Overrated?"

off of K. Orr's post

I tend to think he is, but I wonder what others who can look at it objectively think. In terms of lyrics, i think he was clever, but nowhere near the top of the list that most people put him on.

is it post martyrdom syndrome, or was he really that good. Off the top of my head, i can think of about 10 emcees that i think had more skills than biggie.

That said, i am not underestimating his impact, i know it was huge (along with puff), but i think he's HIGHLY overrated

p.s. I hope this doesnt turn ugly

In response to Reply # 2

my memory of the "greatest mc of all time" corona going over biggie's head was after he passed....the first prominent mention of it was in canibus' "2nd round knockout".

when biggie was alive, nas was referred to as the second coming of rakim (and they both dropped their debuts in 94). rakim was clearly the "king" pre-94. i doubt many would dispute that, despite the "rakim vs. kane" argument in 88-89.

in fact, biggie's debut album was not getting stellar acclaim immediately upon its release. by the time "one more chance (rmx)" was released, however, that all began to change.

STILL, biggie was not necessarily king.

by 95, biggie was ruling the radio. but i honestly don't recall anyone calling him the greatest of all time then.

nas lost a lot of his luster when "it was written' dropped. the wu members had a lot of impact. the field seemed pretty wide open in 96, although biggie was clearly in the lead.

and big got killed in march 97.

i honestly don't think biggie was "crowned" till after he was killed.

the good thing is, unlike say BDK who withered away before our very eyes, KRS albums are so bad they are immediately swept under the rug.

That's a tight all time list, except you should throw KRS in there for Kane. If Kane died after his second album, he'd be biggie. Besides, he started fallin' way off.

In response to Reply # 35

Honestly, I used to think so . . . until I realized something
People can only appreciate what they can understand. Street cats tend to look at BIG as the greatest because of his slang, subject matter, and relatability. He's like Nas, you can't sleep on his skills regardless, but if you can RELATE in any way to his rhymes, then you truly can assess how dope he was. I do consider BIG the greatest, over Jay, Rakim, Eminem, Nas, etc. To me BIG was complete, no weaknesses, no flaws. Eminem is lyrical, but some times his stuff won't make sense just to keep an ill rhyme pattern. Rakim was incredible, and so far ahead of his time it was rediculous, but I think he was limited in subject matter. BIG could rhyme about the street, chicks, death, money, reality, life in general, whatever and make it crazy . . . Primo was the one nigga to work with all that were considered the greatest with the exception of Pac and he considered BIG the greatest (worked with Jay, Nas, Rakim, KRS, Kane, etc . . .). Overrated, no, misunderstood, possibly; especially by backpackers . . . no disrespect.
Part of BIG's illness was that he was simple but complex and EVERYTHING, especially in his ladder years, made sense. You could listen to an entire rhyme, and bar 16 would coincide with bar one. Remember You're Nobody till Somebody Kills You? Probably overlooked was how he freaked the rhyme for two verses, and then exemplified his point in the third verse . . .

"You can be the sh**/flash the fattest five/have the biggest dick/but when your shell get hit/you ain't worth spit/just a memory/remember he/used to push the champagne range/silly cat/wore suade in the rain/swear he put the G in game/had the gucci frame before Dana Dane/thought he ran with Kane/I can't recall his name/You mean that kid that nearly lost half his brain over two bits of cocaine?/Gettin his dick sucked by crack head Lorraine?/A fu**in shame/duke's a lame/what's his name/dark-skinned jermaine/See what i mean? . . . "

That's friggin crazy, not to mention his flow.

Remember his dis to Jeru in Kick in the door . . . How he was dissin him talkin to Premo?

"On your mark get set/when I spark ya wet/look how dark it get when you're marked for death/should I start your breath or should i let ya die/in fear you start to cry/ask why/lyrically I'm worshiped/don't front/the works sick/you cursed it but rehersed it/i drop unexpectedly like bird sh**/you herbs get/stuck quickly for royalties and show money/don't forget the publishin/I punish them/i'm done with them/son I'm surprised you run with them/I think they got cum in them/cause they nothin but dicks/tryin to blow up like nitro and dynomite sticks/man, i smoke hydro/rock diamonds that's sick/got paid off my flow rhyme with my own click/take trips to Cairo/layin wit you bi**h/I know you prayin you was rich f**kin prick/ when I see ya ima . . . (Kick in the door . . .)

Listen to Jeru's wrath of the math (specifically the Bullsh** and Ya Playin yaself.

BIG was the greatest, though I know he can't be the greatest forever. I just don't think we've heard the new greatest yet. And please, for the love of GOD keep Ghostface out of this discussion. He's not even the best in his click!

I think the real key is to see how much influence he's had on other folks rhymes, how often his rhymes get lifted, and how often his voice gets sampled.

Most folks who give him that love are on some follow the crowd mentality.

then he is indeed the greatest, at least he's among them

but, what if the criteria are mic skills? Lyricism? After all, isnt that what this whole thing (hip hop) is about?..ok, maybe not really, there are so many elements..

Do other cats have tighter flows?
Do other cats write better punchlines?
Are there others that capture the game as well?

Prolly. But overall, I can't think of anyone in recent times that could do that. (well there's that one guy, but i'm trying to keep his name out of it)

actually i think wu tang forever had a lot of classic slept on music. i think it has some genius moments that people just passed on with the usual oh its too long for a double argument. i think rza exceled himself on the beats. it might not have been the raw 36 chambers style but at least it was true to him and still doing something new, not doing what he thinks people expect from him.

The Tekitha song's not a filler. Rza likes that shit and she has a song on Ghost Dog. Personally I don't like it, but that's not a filler.
That's Rae at the end, and that's called an outro. Many albums have them. And anyway, delete that and the intro and there's still 14 songs on disc two.

nah, big's 2 albums show about as much versatility as jay's practically 100-song catalog.

but big is somewhat overrated tho- mostly by cats who came up with him and dont really remember older cats.

while not tearing down as many mics, krs was more versatile
and
while being about equally a one-trick pony, rakim worked his one trick better.

as for influence, there's a wider gap in rhyme styles pre- and post- rakim than the shift in album presentation pre- and post- biggie. "40 and a blunt" rap continued at least till early 96, no matter how many r&b remixes big appeared on.

(big started a lot of wack trends as well- one ex. getting tee and army and nem a deal cuz they used to smoke with you)

>And it's not about selling more.
> Cause if Kane and
>Kool G rap understood that
>formula, they wouldn't have fallen
>off.
the formula was puffy's though. he almost pulled it off wit craig mack, but the making moves video w/ versace shirts came too late. also, big was ill enough to work the formula in 94-96, but he seemed to be losing his grip.

and did bdk know the formula, but just went buck with it when he found out?

at it's essence tho, what do you want thats not there already? big gets love/respect from everybody, even all the cats he had beef with since 94 (buckshot, ghost/rae, nas, heads out west).
he just wasnt the GOAT. where would rap be in 96 w/o out big, and where would it be in 94 (give rakim an extra 2 years for people to catch up with what he was doing.)
matter of fact, thats the answer right there. big =arguably best of his time. rakim = 2,3,4 years -ahead- of his time.

...before he died, he only had one album, so nobody was saying all time great. But heads were saying he was the best at the time after "Ready to Die", and heads 'round here were saying that album was eatin' illmatic, which I still believe (illmatic overrated? I know there's somebody out there).

As far as Jigga dying, Jig would have had to die right before volume 1 came out to compare. And since he stays with fresh material, his "Life after death" would've been like streets is watchin' soundtrack. He wouldn't have compared.

1. thought it was too short
2. were overhyped by the source (I think they hyped it right though)
3. didn't like the beats, or didn't like Nas rocked to em.
4. beat consistency - since he had so many big name producers the lp didn't have a cohesive sound.

But in general, it's a beats heads versus a lyrics heads type thing. And commercially and generally the music folks win over the lyrics folks. That's part of the reason that the Lesson is more concerned with Stevie and Prince.

But that's not really why the album is classic.

Listen to
- Lord Tariq's verse on that doo wop tape "owner of a corner"
- Mobb Deep's Infamous lp
- Wu Tang's C.R.E.AM.
- Tragedy's verse on LA,LA

Then listen to NY State of Mind or Represent(my least favorite on the lp, I like 1 time 4 ya mind better).

It's the verbal imagery. Nas benefitted from being at the right time and right place, cause Wu preceded him, and Mobb Deep to an extent also, but definitely came after building on his imagery (not necessarily his style).

Add to that the polysyllabic thing that he was killing on that lp....

I heard one love 3 months before the LP dropped, and it didn't make much of an impression. But the World is Yours?...And then to realize what that Scarface reference really meant...With the chorus...

i agree a little about the production consistency argument - illmatic is more a collection of perfect songs that work as well without each other as they do with. but it still hangs pretty well as a whole. large professor was meant to do the whole album - i do wonder how that would have come out (considering he did such a stellar job with akinyeles 1st LP).

hype is always going to have people against it but in retrospect i think it was deserved.

Its definitely a classic for all the reasons you stated. But Greatest Album ever? I'd say no because its fairly one-demensional. Maybe its the greatest straight lyrical ghetto chronical ever or something like that, but I'd say a lot of albums are better, partially because of the music thing you mentioned, but more so becuase of the combination of more complementary music and more dynamic lyrics.

i agree with you here. for all intents and purposes, i would say black on both sides was a more complete, and better album than illmatic. i'll probably catch a lot of flack for it, but oh well. That said, illmatic is the greatest straight lyrical showing on an album, and did create a new wave for hip hop. But i just cant say its the greatest rap album ever. Frankly i dont know what is, thats a whole nother other debate.

his scrotum is exactly where everyone is hanging off. i mean, guest appearances arent SONGS. theyre just a few verses here and there. thats like saying a session musician was that ill cos he played a few licks on peoples records. sorry but one dope record (that would be ready to die) does not a career make.

biggie didnt record much extra at all as born again shows while tupac had material out the ass. he has guest appearances, albums, films even (well he did have) all sitting around, waiting to be pimped by suge and destroyed in remakes by ja rule.

:)

i think he had one excellent album, and one album that could have been condensed into an excellent album. Dude rhymed over ice creamy beats on some of them joints on LAD.

He did have skills, but for you to say Big over Rakim in consistency, i think thats going way past too far. Rakim didnt become inconsistent until that sweat the technique album. and he redeemed himself with the 18th letter, only to fall off again with the master. But, i think Ra was waaaaaaaaaaaaay more consistent than nas.

the only reason he's not quoted as much now is because its been damn near 20 years (maybe im pushin it a lil) since he came on the scene, all cats remember and can quote is shit from the 90's now.

LAD had joints that girls like! What the fuck's wrong with that?

And the 18th letter? garbo. Rakim pumped three goodies. I'm glad Big didn't stick around to drop watered down garbo.

I just listened to "Ready to Die" front to back again, and I think Nas' "Illmatic" trumped it production-wise and lyrically. They came out the same year, so they both were in the same hip hop era. Biggie was good at what he did, I just find the "get over here hoe" routine to get stale after awhile. Not that he didn't pull off some other stuff, but the "Big Poppa" mantra still permeates the entire album. A classic nonetheless, I just believe "Illmatic" was more complete. So-

Say Nas gets gunned down right before "It Was Written" drops. People would be clamoring for that and proclaim it a classic. The same happened with Big. He drops a REAL classic, dies at the top of his game, and "Life After Death" becomes a huge fan favorite. I mean, "Hypnotize" and "Street Dreams" were both shallow mainstream cuts. Interchangable. Could Big have gone down the same path that Nasty Nas did? A first album so good that he struggles to find who he is after subsequent albums fail to match up? I mean, Puff dropped "No Way Out" right after, which paved the way for mainstream "radio" hits. It wouldn't be hard to imagine Big riding that wave until he released his own version of "Nastradamus."

All I'm saying is that any number of MCs could've have died at their peak. Public then believes that artist would have ALWAYS be on top. Like I said, if Nas died after "Illmatic" he'd be a lyrical king for all ages. It's too hard to judge an artist's greatness on one album alone, but that's just what everyone did when Biggie died. And nothing in "Life After Death" really showed Big was the greatest. Part of being the goat is that it is of ALL TIME. No one could be sure how much longevity Big would have had - so no one can honestly say he was king either.

P.S. I know no one wants to hear this, but considering his morbid fascination with his own death and the fact that NO evidence has ever really surfaced about his murder - I don't think it's crazy to think a guy with such a dark mindset might incline to die early and be a legend to the masses (I mean, it's always been an uneasy thought in the back of my mind and re-listening to "Suicidal Thoughts" didn't help any).

thats the problem. club folks are the only audience being targetted. artists arent thinking beyond the club.

thats why its unlikely nas will ever make another illmatic. (that and his lack of quality control).

but illmatic AND the remixes are all perfect.

No one can convince me "One time for your mind" is a banger. Take that out, the albums like 36 minutes. Take out the intro, you got like a 34 minute classic EP. And maybe its me, but its kinda monotonous. Same flow, slightly different speeds. Very little versatility or musical innovation. I guess at the time it was Lyrically groundbreaking and influencial too, but there's a few albums I think are better. "Ready to Die" is one of them.

half the song big is spitting some old run dmc/whodini rhyme scheme and cheezy lyrics.

hypnotize is ultimately better, cuz its *supposed* to be a catchy, dumbed-down-for-the-masses track. nas again found himself caught between lyricism and commercial appeal.

flow, cadence, WHERE he chooses to place accentuate certain words alone makes it a better song

as a nas fan, i always felt the street dreams remix way more than the original ... and the video for the original didn't help

if i had to make a best of nas tape, street dreams would be left off, but it'd be a crime for me to leave hypnotize off a best of big tape

and also, one of my favorite tests is to ask cats which is easier to quote, hypnotize or street dreams

I put hoes in NY onto DKNY (uh-huh)

All Philly hoes, dough and Moschino (c'mon)
Every cutie wit a booty bought a Coogi (haaaaah!)
Now who's the real dookie, meanin who's really the shit
Them niggaz ride dicks, Frank White push the sticks
on the Lexus, LX, four and a half
Bulletproof glass tints if I want some ass
Gon' blast squeeze first ask questions last
That's how most of these so-called gangsters pass
At last, a nigga rappin bout blunts and broads
Tits and bras, menage-a-tois, sex in expensive cars
I still leave you on the pavement
Condo paid for, no car payment
At my arraignment, note for the plantiff
Your daughter's tied up in a Brooklyn basement (shhh)
Face it, not guilty, that's how I stay filthy (not guilty)

My man put me up for the share, one-fourth of a square
Headed for Delaware, with one change of gear
Nothin on my mind but the dime sack we blazed
with the glaze in my eye, that we find when we crave
dollars and cents, a fugitive with two attempts
Jakes had no trace of the face, now they drew a print
Though I'm innocent, til proven guilty
I'ma try to filthy, purchase a club and start up realty
For real G, I'ma fullfill my dream
If I conceal my scheme, then precisely I'll build my cream
the first trip without the clique
Sent the bitch with the quarter brick, this is it
Fresh face, NY plates got a Crooked I for the Jakes
I want it all, ArmorAll Benz and endless papes
God sake, what nigga got to do to make a half million
without the FBI catchin feelings

Anyone proclaimed GOAT after 3 albums and a bunch of guest spots is overrated.
Not saying he wasn't nice, he was well-rounded, but I doubt if he was the best at all aspects of an MC
I can't even give him storytelling and that's where he excelled.

The thing about the remix, tho', is it's Biggie's rhyme that's ill. Still one of my favorite lines:

I know your mad 'cause my style you admirin'/Don't be mad UPS is hirin'

Biggie had those rhymes that reminded you of you and your boys sittin' around dissin' each other, talkin' shit, tellin' stories - more so than any particular trait about his rhyming, it was the feel of his lyrics that made you pump his shit.

A test I use is do I remember the first time I heard them rhyme on the radio or single -

I remember the first time I heard "Juicy, hell I remember from just when I heard, "Get a grip, muthafucka".

I don't remember the first time I heard "It ain't hard to tell" even tho' that's a sick song that I still bump to this day.

I'm not sure B.I.G. was the GOAT - but he's definitely top 5, just for the impact and feel of his rhymes. Nas, who I also like, is too erratic for my taste, even tho' Illmatic has some of the best storytelling and lyricism on record.

Damn, talking about this shit makes me remember how much fun this time was for hip-hop...y'all got me reminiscing!

was nothing like the first time i heard nas (live at the bbq)

then i heard him kill it on back to the grill again...there was no way heads didnt think he was gonna be the savior - "im waving automatic guns at nuns/.....serial killer, who works by the phone books"....

lines like that had my mouth watering...i rememeber the buzz around this kid...dudes was quotin him in the source long before illmatic even dropped...and when i heard it aint hard to tell, me and my peeps used to sit around and analyze that shit, word for word...

nas was like, "sneak a uzi on the island in my army jacket lining"...man, he had a much better impact on me adopting the newer form hip hop was taking than big.

I hear that. I guess it's just a difference of taste. I didn't hear Live at the BBQ 'til much later >>> the first time I saw Nas was on RapCity, so I guess I didn't get that same buzz. Still, both were on a high level during a fruitful time for hip-hop (especially East Coast)

its adding to the song, but in a almost totally intangible way. i.e. cant be taught.

the last few joints on lAD are real somber and grave, and RTD had an air of death surrounding it, but felt entirely different. where rtd is shrouded in desperation, Lad feels more paranoia and 'time to face the music'.
illmatic feels like street, and IWW feels ...like a fake. unless, you had never heard illmatic. then it just feels kinda shallow.
reasonable doubt seems to be truthful 'tales of a hustler', yet since then jay has been trying too hard to make you believe he's the guy from the first album who didnt have anything to prove.

nowadays, only cat making you feel him like that is ghostface.
scarface if he's still 'nowadays.' nas does it in spurts.

back to the issue, this one helps big's goat argument. he was better than nas, rakim, or probably krs or scarface in this area. second only to pac.

BIG is one of the greatest of all time, but he's got some company no doubt on that short list. he aint JORDAN, is Magic, Bird, Dr J...

ok boys & girls...... pull out your Ready to Die cd and go to track 17. Then tell me he's overrated. Here are the lyrics so that you can read along:

When I die, fuck it I wanna go to hell
Cause I'm a piece of shit, it ain't hard to fuckin' tell
It don't make sense, goin' to heaven wit the goodie-goodies
Dressed in white, I like black Tims and black hoodies
God will probably have me on some real strict shit
No sleepin' all day, no gettin my dick licked
Hangin' with the goodie-goodies loungin' in paradise
Fuck that shit, I wanna tote guns and shoot dice
All my life I been considered as the worst
Lyin' to my mother, even stealin' out her purse
Crime after crime, from drugs to extortion
I know my mother wished she got a fuckin' abortion
She don't even love me like she did when I was younger
Suckin' on her chest just to stop my fuckin' hunger
I wonder if I died, would tears come to her eyes?
Forgive me for my disrespect, forgive me for my lies
My babies' mothers 8 months, her little sister's 2
Who's to blame for both of them (naw nigga, not you)
I swear to God I just want to slit my wrists and end this bullshit
Throw the Magnum to my head, threaten to pull shit
And squeeze, until the bed's, completely red
I'm glad I'm dead, a worthless fuckin' buddah head
The stress is buildin' up, I can't,
I can't believe suicide's on my fuckin' mind
I want to leave, I swear to God I feel like death is fuckin' callin' me
Naw you wouldn't understand (nigga, talk to me please)
You see its kinda like the crack did to Pookie, in New Jack
Except when I cross over, there ain't no comin' back
Should I die on the train track, like Remo in Beatstreet
People at the funeral frontin' like they miss me
My baby momma kissed me but she glad I'm gone
She knew me and her sista had somethin' goin' on
I reach my peak, I can't speak,
call my nigga Chic, tell him that my will is weak.
I'm sick of niggas lyin', I'm sick of bitches hawkin',
matter of fact, I'm sick of talkin'.
(BANG)
(hey yo big...hey yo big)

Taken from "Allies" off the Poor Righteous Teachers album, "New World Order".....

OK, ha
My intellect will pro-
tect what you threaten
Captain to Lieutenant,
even take cadets in
I take them all
rich and to the powerful
Don't fear no other force
I be re-
defining your hardcore
THE FOLKLORE YOU SPREAD DOWN OVER TRACKS
GOT YOU GASSED ON SOME SHIT
MAY I SUGGEST EX-LAX
Relax! Your whole perception seems to be distorted
In my dimensions fake refugees,
they get deported
Jokers be biting each other's styles so much it's eerie
So many deja vu's but can't no other crews come near me
It's weary, my brothers couldn't hold this if they grasped it
Confession to Jesus are even tried to master
I passed it off the levels of your mere mathematics
I'm on some astrophysics
Quantum Leaping on your tactics
Triple bypasses,
your crew's slow like molasses
While I amass cream
like Jackie Kennedy Onassis

This big track is way more powerful than those two. "God'll probably have me on some real strict shit..." Come on, man! Not to mention that Jigga's tracks always sound a little fantastic, even when they're supposed to be heartfelt. Big's shit is raw and "real".

that alone plus this:

I kick flows for ya, kick down doors for ya
Even left all my motherfuckin hoes for ya
Niggaz think Frankie pussy whipped, nigga picture that
With a Kodak, Insta-ma-tak
We don't get down like that, lay my game down quite flat
Sweetness, where you parked at?
Petiteness but that ass fat
She got a body make a nigga wanna eat that, I'm fuck witchu
The bitch official doe, dick harder than a missile yo
Try to hit if she trippin dissapearin like Arsenio
Yo, the bitch push a double-oh
with the five in front, probably a connivin stunt
Y'all drive in front, I'm a peel with her
Find a deal with her, she fuck around and steal, huh?
Then we all get laced
Television's, Versacci heaven, when I'm up in em
The shit she kicked, all the shit's legit
She get dick from a player off the New York Knicks
Nigga tricked ridiculous, the shit was plush
She's stressin me to fuck, like she was in a rush
We fucked in his bed, quite dangerous
I'm in his ass while he playin gainst the Utah Jazz
My 112, CD blast, I was past
She came twice I came last, roll the grass
She giggle, say I don't smoke it on homegrown
Then I heard her moan, honey I'm home
Yep, tote chrome for situations like this
I'm up in his broad I know he won't like this
Now I'm like bitch you better talk to him
Before this fist put a spark to him
Fuck around shit get dark to him, put a part through him
Lose a major part to him, arm, leg
She beggin me to stop but this cat gettin closer
Gettin hot like a toaster, I cocks the toast, uhh
Before my eyes could blink
She screams out, "Honey bring me up somethin to drink!"
He go back downstairs more time to think
Her brain racin, she's tellin me to stay patient
She don't know I'm, cool as a fan
Gat in hand, I don't wanna blast her man
But I can and I will doe, I probably chill doe
Even though situation lookin kinda ill yo
It came to me like a song I wrote
Told the bitch gimme your scarf, pillowcase and rope
Got dressed quick, tied the scarf around my face
Roped the bitch up, gagged her mouth with the pillowcase
Play the cut, nigga comin off some love potion shit
Flash the heat on em, he stood emotionless
Dropped the glass screamin, "Don't blast here's the stash,
a hundred cash just don't shoot my ass, please!"
Nigga pullin mad G's out the floor
Put stacks in a Prater knapsack, hit the door
Grab the keys to the five, call my niggaz on the cell
Bring some weed I got a story to tell, uhh...

Yo man, y'all niggaz ain't gonna believe what the fuck happened to me.
Remember that bitch I left the club with man? Yo, freaky yo. I'm up in
this bitch playa this bitch fuckin run them ol mink ass niggaz and shit,
I'm up in the spot though. One of them six-five niggaz, I don't know.
Anyway I'm up in the motherfuckin spot, so boom I'm up in the pussy,
whatever whatever. I sparks up some lye, Pop Duke creeps up in on some,
must have been rained out or something *laughing* because he's in the
spot. Had me scared, had me scared, I was shook Daddy - but I forget I
had my Roscoe on me. Always. You know how we do. So anyway the nigga
comes up the stairs, he creepin up the steps, the bitch all shook she
sends the nigga back downstairs to get some drinks and shit. She gettin
mad nervous, I said fuck that man! I'm the nigga, you know how we do it
nigga, ransom note style put the scarf around my motherfuckin face,
gagged that bitch up, played the kizzack. Soon this nigga comes up in
the spot, flash the Desert in his face he drops the glass. Looked like
the nigga pissed on his-self or somethin, word to mother! Ahh fuckit
this nigga runs dead to the floor, peels up the carpet, start givin me
mad papers, mad papers. (I told you that bitch was a shiesty bitch cuz!
Word to mother I used to fuck her cousin but you ain't know that! Hahaha.
You wouldn't know that shit. Really though.) I threw all that
motherfuckin money up in the Prada knapsack. Two words, I'm gone!
(No doubt, no doubt... no doubt!) Yo nigga got some lye, y'all got
some lye? *conversation fades out*

puts biggie as the goat.

Come now, Vin...

Twice upon a time there was a boy who died twice
and lived happily ever after but that's another chapter
live from home of the brave with dirty dollars
& beauty parlors & baby bottles & bowling ball Impalas
& street scholars that's majoring in culinary arts
You know how to work bread cheese & dough
from scratch but see the catch is you can get caught
Know what ya sellin' what ya bought so cut that big talk
Let's walk to the bridge now meet me halfway
now you may see some children dead off in the pathway
it's them poor babies walkin' slowly to the candy lady
It's lookin' bad need some hope
like the words maybe, if, or probably more than a hobby
when my turntables get wobbly they don't fall
I'm sorry y'all I often drift I'm talkin' gift
so when it comes you never look the horse inside it's grill
of course you know I feel like the bearer of bad news
Don't want to be it but it's needed so what have you
Now question is every nigga with dreads for the cause?
Is every nigga with golds for the fall? Naw
So don't get caught in appearance
it's Outkast Aquemini another Black experience Okay

past, last, grass

like this and...like this.

anyone who still believes the "he wrote it in his head" theory is, uh, easy to convince. lol.

now, take that story, put it next to 'interview with a vampire' by ras kass or 'time's up' by OC and tell me with a straight face that your man is the goat.

there is no goat.

different folks at different times zone out on some next level ish and it gets recorded. 3 or 4 years later, somebody comes out with something even more amazing, probably after listening to and being inspired by the joint before.

but if i was gonna pick a goat, i still stick by rakim. on wax. on stage, i go with kris.

THE GOAT...And here's why...

Ya know that's why man I be telling you all the time man, you know LOVE,
that word love is a very serious thing, and if you don't watch out I tell ya
that (Love's gonna get you)

because a lot of people out here say "i love my
car" or "i love my chain" or or "i'm i'm just in love with that girl over
there"

so for all the people out there that fall in love with material items
we gonna bump the beat a lil' something like this

im in junior high with a b plus grade,
at the end of the day i don't hit the arcade,
I walk from school to my moms apartment,
I got to tell the sucaks everyday "don't start it",
cause where I'm at if your soft your lost,
to say on course means to roll with force,
a boy named Rob is chillin in a Benz,
in front of my building with the rest of his friends,
I give him a pound, oh i mean i shake his hand,
he's the neighborhood drug dealer, my man,
i go upstair and hug my mother,
kiss my sister, and punch my brother,
i sit down on my bed to watch some tv,
(machine gun fire) do my ears decieve me,
Nope, thats the fourth time this week,
another fast brother shot dead in the street,
the very next day while im off to class,
my moms goes to work cold busting her ass,
my sisters cute but she got no gear,
i got three pairs of pants and with my brother i share,
see there in school see i'm made a fool,
with one and a half pair of pant you aint cool,
but there's no dollars for nothing else,
i got beans, rice, and bread on my shelf,
every day i see my mother struggling,
now its time i've got to do something,
i look for work i get dissed like a jerk,
i do odd jobs and come home like a slob,
so here comes Rob hes cold and shivery,
he gives me two hundred for a quick delivery,
i do it once, i do it twice,
now theres steak with the beans and rice,
my mother's nervous but she knows the deal,
my sister's gear now has sex appeal,
my brothers my partner and we're getting paper,
three months later we run our own caper,
my family's happy everything is new,
now tell me what the fuck am i supposed to do,

CHORUS

thats why, (loves gonna get you)
(loves gonna get you)(loves gonna get you)(loves gonna get you)
you fall in love with your chain,
you fall in love with your car,
loves gonna sneak right up and snuff you from behind,
so i want you to check the story out as we go down the line,
(loves gonna get you)(loves gonna get you)(loves gonna get you)

money's flowing, everything is fine,
got myself an uzi and my brother a nine,
buisness is boomin' everything is cool,
i pull about a g a week fuck school,
a year goes by and i begin to grow,
not in height but juice and cash flow,
i pick up my feet and begin to watch tv,
cause now i got other people working for me,
i got a 55 inch television you know,
and every once in awhile i hear just say no,
or the other commercial i love,
is when they say, this is your brain on drugs,
i pick up my remote control and just turn,
cause with that bullshit im not concerned,
see me and my brother jump in the BM,
driving around our territory again,
i stop at the light like a superstar,
and automatic weapons cold sprayed my car,
i hit the accelerater scared as fuck,
and drove one block to find my brother was hit,
he wasn't dead but the blood was pouring,
and all i could think about was war and,
later i found that it was Rob and his crew,
now tell me what the fuck am i supposed to do,

ya know thats why, (loves gonna get you)
(loves gonna get you)(loves gonna get you)(love loves gonna get you)
(loves gonna get you)(loves gonna get you)(loves gonna get you)
(love loves gonna get you)(loves gonna get you)
that word love is very very serious(loves gonna get you)
very addictive

my brothers out of it, but i'm still in it,
on top of that im in it to win it,
i can't believe that Rob would diss me,
that faggot, that punk, he's soft a sissy,
i'm driving around now with three of my guys,
the war is on and i'm on the rise,
we rolled right up to his favorite hang out,
said hello and then the bullets rang out,
some fired back so we took cover,
and all i could think about was my brother,
Rob jumped up and began to run,
busting shots hoping to hit someone,
so I just stopped, and let off three shots,
two hit him and one hit a cop,
I threw the gun down and began to shout,
come on I got him it's time to break out,
but as we ran there were the boys in blue,
pointing their guns at my four man crew,
they shot down one, they shot down two,
now tell me what the fuck am i supposed to do,

>>you made a lot of false
>>and inaccurate statements.-

the top 3 (as stated before, kane, ra, kris) really shouldnt be compared. the way i see it, is they are on one level, then you start ranking heads after them.

I agree... I always thought he was overrated...
What you gonna judge on
lyracism, storytelling, impact,

If thats the catagoris (i'll prpobaly get slamed for this)
Nas was better lyrically (illmatic is all I have to say about that)

storytelling.. well nas was better at that too.. (I'll get killed again) and so was the wu (36 chambers)Tearsby the wu and shootouts by nas are as descriptive as anything big put out

As far as impact is concerned ... Tupac had more impact then anyone at that time, I mean seriously they played it in the media like it was an east west thing, but it was more like a brooklyn/ west coast beef, cause I know a lot more Pac fans then I know big fans... Pac sold like 7 million copies of all eyes on me, and that was before he died, who sold like that then...

At that time Big, Pac and Nas was all people was talking about... Jay threw his own self in the mix.. And if that what we comparing he falls behind both of them...

diamond with a double CD equals 5 million consumers (each CD is counted as one unit, so every buyer purchases two units with every sale of a double CD).

technically, puffy is the best selling artist on bad boy, by number of consumers (7 million individual sales).

but who cares? like you said, sales mean nothing in this discussion. clearly puff isn't a better rhymer than...well, than most anybody mentioned in this thread. even cappadonna. ha.

I wasn't trying to use record sales as a way to state who was better then who.I was just trying to make a point ... Pac was more influential then Big... Pac was who people was checking for BEFORE he died not after... Well actually people are still checking for Pac... Not to say that people wasn't checking for Big... I checked for Big... I't just Pac had a bigger fan base, more pople was checking for Pac... That was my point .. Not Pac better cause he sold more record's... Shit Pac was better then Big... But that's a whole other discussion...

The heavyweight's at that time were Pac, Big, and Nas... and like I stated before big fall's behind both of them
Pac
Nas... then

But hell, I always say KRS all-time anyway. Ghost today.

He never stood the test of time, never stood the test of a challenge, never stood the test of "what happens after you get cross over appeal" he died right before he got that. After kane got cross over appeal he got wack. After the Fresh Prince got cross over appeal he became Wil Smith and thought that he could beat mike Tyson!! Biggie rhymes over Diana Ross's I'm coming out then he dies, what would have happened if he got to rub elbows with Carson Daly on MTV? Would he have goten wack? Who knows; but the guy never got to prove that, so he can't be the greatest. Sorry, but as Kurtis Blow said it "these are the breaks"! I'm no big fan of Big excuse the pun. And for that matter, neither am I of Tupac, he wasn't that good either.

like bigs, are stellar..save for a few singing mishaps..

after that, im not apart of the crowd that thinks he immediately went to the shithole..

i think Taste of chocolate was good, but not the caliber of big daddy thang, or long live the kane

prince of darkness is where he really started to take a turn toward the complete sold out side..but he still had some hidden gems...

even daddy's home and looks like a job for still show flashes, but not enough to warrant any future albums...still, i think his place among the top is solidified, if biggie is with 2 albums, than kane should be as well

I live in my own little world, but it's OK, they know me here.

If he lived cats would have said that Life After Death was weak. That was no 5 mic album. I remember sitting there with two of my friends listnening to it and we all said it was wack. There were about eight good songs, the rest was filler or it was trash. He may not of caught that much flack because Brooklyn would be on his nuts regardless. Nas caught a lot of heat for It Was Written but I think Life After Death was a far worse second album.
I don't see people attacking Biggie for some reason even though that album deserves to be criticized.

I dug both albums after first listens.

Hell, I thought that Nas was a better rapper
flow-wise on IWW than Illmatic. The tracks were
the only problem for me in 1996. Some worked. Some didn't.

Do you still have LaD? Let me know your eight songs,
and I am sure that I could argue for at least five
more. Another thing: how dope are those eight songs
that you like?

>I don't see people attacking Biggie
>for some reason even though
>that album deserves to be
>criticized.

LaD isn't perfection. You won't hear me arguing that.
To me, perfection is EVERY song. Off the top of my
head, I would name maybe 5-10 hiphop albums that I feel
qualify for 'timeless' dopeness on every song. You know
one of them for sure (the 94 Jones album).

For folks to act like LaD is a pillar of borderline
wackness is insane. It may have about 4 or 5 too many
songs, but still...

LaD being 'classic' would not be the first or last time
that a release is labelled classic that is lacking 'perfection' on an "every song is great" basis.

It seems that fans tend to be much harder on post 'Golden Era' releases. Like 1 or 2 aiight or bad song somehow kills the greatness of 12 songs on a 13-14 song set.

LaD:

At its worst, LaD is 'corny' and random. Playa Hater
was necessary in terms of message, but
the singing was overboard.

At its best, it is a wonderful testiment to BIG's
growth, wit, and overall versitile ability as an
emcee.

"A brother rapping bout blunts and broads...and still
leave you on the pavement..."

That series of lines kinda summed up what BIG could do.

He could rap about nearly anything convincingly and concisely:

He could drop battle rap stuff (Kick in the Door), random
anthems (Hypnotize), pimp joints (The World is Filled),
autobios (Sky's the Limit) and stories (I got a story to tell).

He even threw down a dead homies songs (Missing You).

He swapped verses with pre-blown-up JayZ and Lox. He also rapped well over the RZA track.

Add a convincing Bone-ish flow on Notorious Thugs, and you have a wonderful set of songs amongst the everhated 'filler'.

It Was Written vs Life After Death...

13 songs vs 22 songs.

I've listened to both joints straight through a
couple of times in the last month or so...

To me, the strongest moments of LaD eclipse IWW.
The production was better and BIG was just better. More
comfortable with the tracks. More slick. More witty. Better.

Folks love to complain about the Puffy-ized BIG sound,
but I'd take LaD's overall track set waaaaaay before
I come near IWW's track set. It is just more complete.
Trackmasters 'hurt' Nas much more than the 'Hitmen' 'hurt' BIG.
BIG was able to take tracks that could/would be corny and
make them work. Nas didn't do that as well.

Do you feel like IWW is better because there are less
tracks that you don't like?

OR

Do you feel like IWW's best moments are better than LaD's
best moments?

OR

Is there something else?

Detail as much as you want. I am a fan of both cats, and I
can go to the albums by request to listen again if you think
I need to...

Yes, he is absolutely overrated. He didn't really add anything new to the school of lyricism. He helped usher in an influx of cheesy r-n-b singers who in most cases destroyed hard core hip hop beats. And I'm biased against fat people.
